About the Student
Charlotte has been studying Chinese since seventh grade; she is now in her ninth grade
year at Stowe High School. She started as a true beginner and has worked hard, making
enormous progress each year. She enjoys writing stories and coming up with her own creative
ways to use the language. Always looking for opportunities to improve her Chinese, Charlotte
took an online Chinese through the Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth in the summer
between eighth and ninth grade. Charlotte also gives back to the Chinese program at our school;
this year, she volunteered her study hall time to help a group of middle school students who were
struggling with their online Chinese language classes.
Assignment Guidelines (Instructor: Mairead Harris 何 小 蔓 )
Students had to write a story about a food-related object that showed something about
their family. The assignment was inspired by a 10-minute video advertisement for the Taiwanese
company 全 国 电 子 ;in the short film 《 被 忘 记 的 餐 桌 》, a table represents the family's
connection to each other through food. Students watched and discussed the short film, then wrote
about a food-related item in their own family that had some deeper meaning to them.
