Viyaan Guruzu 谷 维 洋 , Hope Chinese Charter School, Kindergarten
About the Student
Viyaan joined our school on September with
zero Chinese background. During our online
learning, he was very shy and did not talk much in
the beginning. Gradually after one month, when he
felt more comfortable with Chinese language, he
started to answer my simple questions and was
willing to repeat after me when I teach him how to
pronounce vocabulary or read a sentence. By now
(in April), he is able to understand what I am asking
and can perform as well as a native speaker with
Kindergarten learning materials.
This year we were celebrating Chinese New
Year online. In order to help my Kindergarteners
to understand Chinese culture, I prepared a set of hands-on materials for my students to go through
Chinese New Year activities,such as 写 春 联 , 贴 春 联 , 挂 灯 笼 , 剪 纸 , 贴 窗 花 …etc. I asked
each student to send me a picture holding their finished project. To my surprise, Viyaan’s picture
had an amazing background. I was almost in tears seeing my student showed me what he has
learned and applied it to his life--He was celebrating CNY with me. He literally used a big piece
of paper to write everything I taught to the class and put them on his door frame. 对 联 : 冬 去 山
明 水 秀 , 春 来 鸟 语 花 香 。 横 批 : 大 地 回 春 。Plus 春 、 满 。He also decorated his door with his
paper cutting 牛 年 大 吉 & 2021 我 最 牛 。This is an unforgettable CNY for me knowing that I
was successfully implement my mission by sharing the love of Chinese culture with my students
through online learning.
