About the Student<br />

Katie Levy ( 李 雪 ) is an 11th grade student in <strong>Chinese</strong> IV (2020-21) at Sidwell Friends<br />

School (SFS). Katie has been taking <strong>Chinese</strong> at SFS since fifth grade and she loves learning<br />

<strong>Chinese</strong> and <strong>Chinese</strong> culture. In the summer <strong>of</strong> 2019, after finishing her 9th grade <strong>Chinese</strong> II<br />

class, Katie went on a 15-day <strong>Chinese</strong> Language and Culture trip with her <strong>Chinese</strong> teachers and<br />

classmates to Shanghai. The trip left Katie with many wonderful memories and deepened her<br />

love for <strong>Chinese</strong> language and culture. Katie plans to continue studying <strong>Chinese</strong> in <strong>12</strong>th grade<br />

and into college. This piece was written in March <strong>2021</strong>, when Katie had been studying <strong>Chinese</strong><br />

for more than six and a half years.<br />

This was an in-class writing assessment (Email Response) for the 2020-21 <strong>Chinese</strong> IV<br />

class. Students were given a prompt in <strong>Chinese</strong>—an email from their <strong>Chinese</strong> pen pal asking for<br />

information about Georgetown University because the <strong>Chinese</strong> pen pal was interested in<br />

applying to Georgetown University for their undergraduate studies. Students had 45 minutes to
