Shrewsbury Canoe Hire:

the view from the blue canoes

Take the time this summer to see Shrewsbury and Attingham Park from a watery

new perspective in one of our cool blue canoes.

Whether you’re a Salopian or a visitor, canoeing the River Severn from

The Quarry Park is the must do activity in the sunshine. Join us for this

breath-taking experience of the local environment and have oodles

of fun with all the family. Take the time to see Shrewsbury from a

different direction. Here life moves a little slower. You’ll be paddling

under the Welsh Bridge, travelling through the local countryside

upstream – where you can take in the sights of the town river banks

and county show ground, and feel connected to Charles Darwin as

you pass by his childhood garden and Doctor’s Field where he had his

introductions to nature.

Down at river level you can often spot kingfishers, otters, sand martins

and other river flora and fauna. Have your own close encounter with

the incredible countryside and share a unique view of our historic

town away from the hustle and bustle. Exploring our big river is a

brilliant way to inspire young minds, get active and to make memories

that last.

We’re also very proud to be able to invite you to discover another of

our local rivers, The Tern at the National Trust’s Attingham Park. There

the hour long paddle takes you back in time and newly experience

the history of Attingham Park. Views from the river were originally

intended only for the landowners and their guests, which is very

reminiscent of a scene from Wind in the Willows.

It is a gentle meandering river, perfect for beginners. You’ll paddle

through the landscape, and wind your way through some enchanting

woodland. You may even catch the plop sound of a water vole as it

goes about its day. It is a wonderful place to spot all kinds of river

wildlife normally hidden from view, especailly the enormous

dragonflies that dance around the rivers edge. A great experience

that melts away the stresses of every day life.

Shrewsbury Canoe Hire - We are based in The Quarry Park, March

to September, next to the play area and Porthill Bridge. Our base at

the National Trust’s Attingham Park is open from July – September

2020.

One hour hire – All season long we offer canoe hire for 60 minutes

from The Quarry Park and/or Attingham Park, enough time to try out

this fun and exciting activity for all the family. You can turn up and

hire on the day, but we recommend that you book ahead on our

website.

Half day hire from The Quarry you can choose between the

Shrewsbury town loop, or heading into the country upstream and

having a blissful riverside picnic. Book now via our website.

Who can canoe? The great news is open boat canoeing is

accessible to almost everyone, the very young to older people, people

with disabilities, and especially families. Canoes can hold two adults

with one to two children, & dogs are also welcome. To canoe with us

you don't need to have tried it before.

Safety - We provide you with safety equipment, highly trained staff

and constantly monitor the weather and river itself. For your

additional safety we take contactless card payments, follow strict

hygiene proceedures and recommended social distancing measures

during the pandemic.

We really look forward to getting you on the water! Find out more on

all of the above and much more on our website

Chatsworth is high on the ‘to do’ list, when visiting country houses in England. Renowned as being one of

the finest country estates to visit in the UK, Chatsworth House, with its 105 acre garden attracts many

visitors, from global origins, throughout the year.

Chatsworth House is the seat of the Duke of Devonshire and this stately residence has been home to the

Cavendish family since 1549. Located on the east bank of the River Derwent, in Derbyshire’s Peak

District, close to Chesterfield and Bakewell, the magnificent property is surrounded by stunning views

and countryside.

With the House (25-plus rooms to explore, including regal State Rooms) and Gardens, Events, the Estate’

Farm Shop, plus Farmyard, Playground and much more, there is certainly something for all the family to

enjoy at Chatsworth. Very impressive Works of Art and Sculptures, for example, hold much interest for

numerous visitors.

Award-winning Peak Ales Brewery produces real ales and gained much interest from the outset. Located

on the Chatsworth Estate, the craft ales’ producer also offers Chatsworth Gin (40% vol). Following several

years of experimenting and development, this small batch gin utilises selected botanicals, from the

Chatsworth Estate, to produce this high-quality, classic, London Dry Gin. Botanicals used include

Chatsworth lemons, lemongrass, lemon verbena, plus banana leaf. The banana has an important and

very interesting role at Chatsworth and the Cavendish banana is well documented in Chatsworth’s

history. During the 1830’s, Joseph Paxton was head gardener to the 6th Duke of Devonshire and

introduced bananas to Chatsworth.

Chatsworth Gin exudes the crispness of excellent citrus flavours and, complemented with other infused

botanicals, along with banana leaf, makes for a production that is well-balanced, smooth and has great

pleasure for the mouthfeel and palate sensation.

Chatsworth Gin and Peak Ales are available at the Visitor Centre shop, as well

as online. Orders are processed, then dispatched quickly and efficiently.

Brewery Tours are available – perhaps surprise someone special?

New Platform Launches for Shropshire

Food and Drink Businesses

Shropshire Festivals have

launched a new online

marketplace to support the

region’s food and drink

businesses. Shropshire Food

and Drink is a brand-new

website, offering a platform to

help local businesses reach

more people.

Food and drink businesses from

Shropshire can sign up to be listed on

the website’s local directory, as well as

benefitting from shared resources

within the network. Shropshire

Festivals already work with hundreds

of local businesses through their

annual events, Shrewsbury Food

Festival and Shropshire Oktoberfest,

as well as their online shop, the

Shropshire Hamper Company. They

already have over 120 businesses

listed on the new website.

The award-winning team want to

harness the power of their network and

knowledge to create a collective voice

for the region’s food and drink sector.

Beth Heath, Shropshire Festivals’

Director of Fun, said she has wanted

to create a central hub for some time,

and during the pandemic had the

space to put the idea in to action.

She said, “We have created a platform

where Shropshire’s food and drink

businesses can market themselves to

the world. Locals and visitors to

Shropshire will be able to find these

businesses online and will have the

resources to support them by buying

online through our website. It will give

smaller producers who do not have

their own website their very own

webpage.

“Our aim is to build a stronger industry

for Shropshire food and drink. There

are hundreds of food and drink

businesses in the region but they are

lacking a collective voice that can raise

the profile of our local offering and

cement Shropshire as a destination for

food and drink.

“We want Shropshire’s food and drink

businesses, the length and breadth of

the supply chain, to sign up. Small

businesses have always struggled to

keep up with the big commercial

brands, even more so with the strain

and challenges caused by the

pandemic. We want to pull these

businesses together in one place, to

showcase all the amazing businesses

we have to offer, building a stronger

presence for every Shropshire farmer,

producer, brewer, baker, manufacturer,

restaurant owner, street food vendor

and so on! We can help them reach a

bigger audience to preserve their

future.

“Local food and drink businesses have

always been at the core of everything

we do at Shropshire Festivals – from

our farming routes to the food festival.

We understand the importance of

supporting locally made, reared, and

grown produce.

“We would love to hear from any

businesses that would like to sign up –

which is free of charge for 2021! They

can benefit from capturing a new

audience, gaining industry insights,

and peer networking.”

Businesses can sign up at:

Made IN Shropshire

IN

Made in Shropshire is not your

average art, craft or food fair. It is

a collaborative event run by the

makers, for the makers and has a

current membership of over 40

Shropshire based artists, crafters

and food/drink producers, who all

have a say in how, where and

when the fairs are run.

The Made in Shropshire events have

been held across the county for over 15

years, but currently their main focus is

on the flagship fair in The Square,

Shrewsbury. This regular event is held

on the 2nd Saturday of each month

(February to December),

accommodating approximately 35-40

stalls each time. Due to the strict

membership criteria, only people who

live/work within Shropshire will be

found at the fairs and each one has to

have designed/made their own highquality

products for sale, the more

unique the better!

The membership selection committee

work hard to ensure an unusual and

diverse range of designer/makers are

represented, and the following

businesses can be found at many of

the fairs - blacksmithing, ceramics,

clothing, fine art painting, furniture and

upholstery, fused, blown and lampwork

glass, jewellery, leatherwork,

photography, silk painting, wirework

and woodwork (turned and sculptural).

And on the food side, Made in

Shropshire members offer a selection

of fresh farm meat, pork pies, scotch

eggs, salami, pizza-pasties, fresh

baked breads and cakes, ice-cream,

fudge and chocolates, jams and

chutneys, macarons, apple juice and

Shropshire gin as well as natural skin

care. A full list of the current members

and membership information can be

found on the Made in Shropshire

website.

The past year has been difficult for

many local businesses but the Made in

Shropshire team have adapted and

altered event dates and layouts to work

within the restrictions, to provide a safe

environment for shoppers and traders

alike. Please note the addition of an

extra event on Saturday 4 December

this year!

The monthly fair takes place in The

Square, Shrewsbury (SY1 1LA) so is

easily accessible via the many

transport links the town has to offer,

including the train, park and ride, buses

and numerous local car parks. The

Square itself is a pedestrianised area in

the heart of the town, located near to

many local attractions, meaning it

provides a great central location for a

grand day out!

No booking or payment is required to

visit the fair and you are free to browse

the stalls at your leisure. The open-air

canopies ensure the stalls are kept dry

on rainy days however, if strong winds

are expected please check the Made in

Shropshire website or Social Media for

Arts Alive Commission

Series of Insect

Puppet Shows

Arts Alive, Shropshire and Herefordshire’s rural touring

scheme, are celebrating a flourishing relationship with

The Fetch Theatre Company having commissioned a

raft of outdoor performances for 2021.

The West Midlands theatre group have a passion for puppetry and

whilst live performances have been unable to go ahead during

lockdown, their Artistic Director, Andrew Purvin, devised a new

puppet show that supersizes insects. Purvin is an internationally

renowned puppeteer and puppet maker who has many years

experience of directing and designing for the professional stage.

After researching the insects, Purvin went about hand making the

puppets on a large scale with natural and recycled materials. He

said, “When you actually get up close to these creatures you can

see they’re doing the most incredible things. These creatures are

our key workers. They’re the ones feeding us, cleaning up after us.

They’re the ones actually keeping this world alive.” The Fetch are

using scientific knowledge from the Lapworth Museum to feed in to

their performances, such as a startling prediction that all insects

could become extinct by the end of the century.

The outdoor touring show features three performers – a spider, a fly

and a beetle.

Cerin Mills, Live Events Programmer, said, “This is a fun, quirky and

beautiful show suitable for all the family, and delivered outdoors in

a Covid friendly set-up. The insect performers take you on a safari

from their amazing bug hotel into a fantastical world of creatures

that creep, crawl, fly, flutter and buzz. The show features

incredible stories and facts from across the world. The original

music, extraordinary puppets and ingenious set really bring the

stories to life, and will truly amaze the audience!”

The Fetch Theatre adds, “Our safari is inspired by a wealth of

fascinating insect facts and international stories that voice the

myths and folklore of insects from the farthest reaches of the globe

and closer to home. Take heed of the wisdom of the worlds oldest

spider who roamed the lush, tropical swamps of the West Midlands

over 30 million years ago and join us in celebrating the wondrous

world of everything that creeps and crawls.”

Arts Alive have facilitated for ‘Insect Safari’ to be performed at a

number of events this year.

Arts Alive has performances planned on July 13 at Goodrich Primary

School, July 18 in Whitchurch, August 4 as part of the Malinslee Park

Picnic in Dawley, August 21 at Brilley Village Hall and September 4

and 5 at Shrewsbury Food Festival.

The 45-minute show is suitable for ages 5+. For more

Great British Grand Prix's

With the British Grand Prix just round the corner on 18th July,

Scene Magazine looks back at some great British Grand

Prix's over the years when we were literally at the edge or

our seats!

Starting with The 1987 Grand Prix when Nigel Mansell was in

his pomp, the Williams Honda driver, alongside his team

mate Nelson Piquet were head and shoulders in the best car

and it was always going to be a 1-2 for Williams Honda, the

question was which way would it finish. By lap 35 with Piquet

leading and Mansell 2 seconds behind him, neither were

scheduled to stop, but Mansell took a gamble and came in

and got a new set of tyres. Now he came out not with a 2

second deficit but now 29 seconds behind the Frenchman.

With 28 Laps left could Mansell catch Piquet? Well on fresh

rubber Mansell began an epic charge, in fact he broke the lap

record Eight Times and by lap 62 of 65 he was right behind

Piquet and on lap 63 he overtook him to the absolute joy of

the 100,000 British spectators and hung on to win the race.

The place erupted and Mansell was engulfed by the crowd as

everyone thought he had just run out of petrol over the line, in

fact he had pushed the engine so much, it actually blew up!

What a race!

Williams, but this time was driving with a Renault engine as

Honda were a bit peeved with Mansell and Williams because

they kept blowing up their engines!!

This time Honda teamed up with Mclaren and The Maestro

himself Senna, so the battle commenced but Mansell had the

last laugh and won the race with Senna running out of Fuel

on the last lap. Nigel Mansell, ever the gentleman then

"picked" up Senna and famously gave him a lift to the pits,

much to the annoyance of the Stewards.

Coming into the 21st Century we look at the Legend that is

Lewis Hamilton and the first of his SEVEN British Grand Prix

wins. In 2008 there had been persistent rain in the morning

which had left a lot of standing water on the track and then

Lewis who was still with Mclaren at the time was starting on

the second row of the grid.

In 1991 the "Two horse race" this time was between Mansell

and the legend that was Ayrton Senna, Mansell again in his

Lewis had a brilliant start and got in front of the front three

drivers, but his teammate Kovalainen managed to overtake

him back and then the tussle began, Maclaren gambled that

it would rain and put on a set of "Wet" tyres on Lewis and

sure enough with the rain coming down drivers were either

sliding off or coming in to change their own tyres. This then

gave Lewis the time to "Storm" through and win his first

British Grand Prix, the first of many and who's to say he will

not win again in July!!

Good Luck Lewis!

Here at Shropshire Paintball, we offer the ultimate paintball and

combat experience. The arena is far from being the conventional battle

zone, boasting a two story wooden house, a double decker bus, disused

caravans, dozens of dug outs, trenches and even has its own two story

fort with a lookout tower! Set in the woods with flowing streams and

undulating terrain gives the battlefield an added sense of realism, with

plenty of bushes, trees and undergrowth to provide ample ground

cover, the unwary soldier can quickly find himself surrounded by

concealed enemies often bearing down on him, all of this ensures for a

very realistic combat environment.

At long last the Olympics are

here and what a wonderful

month of sport we have to look

forward to. Like every sport The

Olympics have been delayed

for 12 months because of Covid

and in fact only the Japanese

public will be allowed to watch

it because of travel restrictions.

But finally the World's greatest

sports event will be taking place

from 23rd July through till 8th

August.

So which UK Athletes will be

looking to win the medals this

summer. Well, we at Scene

have had a look at who to

follow in Tokyo and hopefully

they will bring home the Gold

for Great Britain.

whereas Adam Peaty swims

Giles Sails, in fact, like Sir Ben

Ainslie he dominates his event.

As the current Olympic

Champion in Finn Class at the

Rio Olympics, he won his event

with a day to spare which in

rowing is unprecedented and

I'm sure he will do the same

again in Enoshima Harbour.

Katarina Johnson-Thompson

(The girl in the Muller Light

adverts!) is the current

Heptathlon World Champion

and in doing so broke Jessica

Ennis Hill's British record points

total from that heady balmy

evening in the London Olympics

and I'm sure she will push that

record up further in Tokyo.

Tokyo Olympics

she won the 100m and second

in the 200m and if current form is

anything to go by she should be

very close to repeating those

great feats!!

Jason and Laura Kenny are the

Golden Couple of British

Cycling, winning TEN Olympic

Gold Medals between them!!

Just think about that TEN

OLYMPIC GOLD MEDALS. In fact

if they only won one Gold

Medal each that would be a

poor Olympics, Crazy to think

like that, but we are in blessed

times for our sports men and

women.

Adam Peaty is the current 50

and 100 metre Breastroke world

record holder, in fact he holds

the record for the fastest 20

times at 100m breaststroke, the

man is simply unbeatable at this

event, so he will be nailed on to

win the Gold medal,

unfortunately though there is no

50m Breaststroke event at the

Olympics as he would have

been nailed on to win that to!

Another man who will be great

on water will be Giles Scott, but

Now one girl who has improved

dramatically is Dina Asher-Smith.

Dina is the current National

Record holder at both 100m

and 200m where in the last

World Championships in 2019

Whatever happens during July

& August in Tokyo we will be at

the edge of our seats, in tears of

happiness and tears of

disappointment, but that's what

the Olympics is all about and

why we love it so much.

Carers make the difference!

The impact of Covid 19 on Britain’s care homes was a

public health crisis that no one saw coming. It brought

home to the wider public just how critical and

exceptional the role of a care worker is. Whether it is an

agency carer or a permanent carer, the compassion

and commitment needed are identical.

The demand for healthcare is an ever-growing industry

with the UK having an ageing population and one that

is expected to grow by 10 million over the next 25 years.

It’s likely that every one of us will need the skills of a care

professional at some stage of our lives; if we fall ill, as we

age, or if we need a little more support than usual in our

daily lives. As the care industry changes to meet

modern needs, new job opportunities are always

coming up, whether this is in social work, health care,

personal care, protection or support.

Working in healthcare, whether directly or indirectly to

another person, you will be changing lives and

impacting families. As a healthcare professional, you

get to have a fast-paced workday with an everchanging

atmosphere. This type of work environment

leaves professionals finishing each day feeling a sense

of fulfilment.

It is very safe to say that no two days are the same

when working in healthcare. Whether working in a ward,

dental surgery, care home or in an office, you never

quite know what is going to happen when you wake up

and head to work in the morning. The excitement of not

knowing what could come your way is a thrill of the job,

keeping you alert and guaranteed no repetition in each

shift. The healthcare sector requires regular decision

making, some good, some difficult and often on the

spot. Decisiveness, intuition and problem solving are

characteristics of anybody in healthcare. The constant

physical and mental challenges of healthcare, each

day will be full of learning and the shifts are likely to go

by quickly.

The broad scale of healthcare, means that

qualifications and medical knowledge is not necessarily

required. Not just for education leavers, more and more

people are also switching to a career in care, as job

satisfaction becomes a driving factor in our work

choices.

Healthcare is such a vast sector, that roles vary from

administration, payroll, community care, doctors,

surgeons, nursing home and social care, to name a few,

with opportunities to suit varying education and

experience levels. With services available for adults or

children, those at risk, or those who have additional

needs arising from illness, disability, age or low incomes,

there is plenty to consider.

Being able to build relationships with patients and

service users is very important and people need to learn

to trust you. These relationships can take time and effort

to build up, so you’ll also need patience, friendliness

and great communication skills.

With the industry changing all the time, there are lots of

short courses available for people to learn about

important aspects of the sector, with many employers

willing to fund or contribute to the cost of training

courses.

With extensive knowledge of both the healthcare and

recruitment industries, and with excellent relationships

with their many clients, Safehands Recruitment can give

you the right assistance and direction in finding the best

role for you.

Get in touch with us today to find out what

opportunities there are for you in the care sector.

2 garlic cloves, crushed

100g unsalted butter, softened

Vegetable oil to rub

METHODS

Cook the pancetta in a frying

This was a time when Corona

vehicle similar to this would

come around and you would

get your fizzy pop off them and

at the same time if you kept

your used bottles you would get

about 10p back for each bottle,

so it was also environmentally

friendly, way before the term

became trendy.

Usually this would be on a friday

night and something else we

used to do on a Friday night

was going to the local video

shop to pick that nights film,

way before everything was

downloaded, just think we

would walk, usually, just round

the corner to pick the latest

movie which would then bring

up the debate of getting

everyone to agree on what to

watch. You would get home

and put the VHS (Maybe

This was at a time when lot's of

people actually hired there TV's

from Shops such as Granada or

Radio Rentals, paying a couple

of quid each week, I think the

idea was that as TV's upgraded

you would then get the latest

version, well I think that's what

they told my mom!!

And then looking at the

chocolates and sweets we used

to nibble on when watching

American Werewolf in London

or Love Story, (Depending on

what mood you were in), most

of those seem to have gone out

of fashion. Remember Pacers

and Spangles to name but two,

however, with the re-birth of the

retro sweet shops a lot seem to

be making a comeback.

So while your walking down the

street wearing your shoulder

style, listening to the latest songs

on your walkman while playing

with your yo yo and holding

your Cabbage patch doll or

haven't got a clue on what I just

said, then maybe it was better

A guide to

taking care

of you!

Selfcare is not selfish We live in a society

that is quick to judge our actions as

selfish, to make us feel bad and guilty

about putting ourselves first but the

reality is that no one else can take care

of us better than we can take care of

ourselves.

No-one else, no matter how close we are to

them, knows how we truly feel inside, how

our body feels, how we are coping with the

stress of the world and what we need to

make us feel better. Only we truly know

what we need and sometimes even

determining that for ourselves can be

difficult, we need to take a moment of

quiet, to stop and listen to ourselves.

STRESS IS WHEN YOUR

MOUTH SAYS YES

BUT YOUR HEART

SAYS NO!

Self-love and care is not just an occasional

bubble bath or a new pair of shoes, real Self

Care is making a commitment to yourself

and putting your needs first. This is not

selfish! In Fact, it is the most unselfish thing

you can do! The better you feel the more

able you are to GIVE to everything and

everyone else!! If you don’t listen to yourself

and just keep going until you are exhausted

you may experience all kinds of negative

emotions, anger, resentment even

depression, and more commonly illness, as

your body will just create a situation to

make you stop and listen! When you board

an aircraft and listen to the Safety

Demonstration, they ALWAYS tell you that

you must put on your oxygen mask BEFORE

helping anyone else, why do you think this

is?? Because if you dont you will pass out

and not be able to help ANYONE.

We get so caught up the in the ‘rat race’,

Our jobs, our families, our commitments,

and responsibilities seem to consume us

and few of us really listen to ourselves. Even

when we do there is often an excuse at

hand. We are too busy at work, our kids

need our attention, we have too many

things on our ‘To Do’ list or my personal

favourite… we just can’t say NO!!

The reality is that we can all make some

time for some self-care, it is not a whimsical

ideal - it is an absolute NECESSITY!!! I think

this saying really sums up the trap we often

find ourselves in….

This is the same lesson; you cannot give

from any empty tank! So, if you need it I am

now giving you full permission to look after

yourself, to take some timeout and to put

yourself first! Be kind, be compassionate, be

empathic but make you do all of this for

YOURSELF as well as other people!

SELF care

Is Not Selfish!

I treat so many people that are

overwhelmed, over tired and energetically,

emotionally, and physically exhausted yet

they still find it so hard to make time for

themselves or take proper care of themself

because they feel some kind of duty to

everyone else or guilt for putting themselves

first.

This is trauma response. If you keep going in

this state, you will become sick. Our body

develops illness when it is trying to

communicate something to us, but we are

refusing to listen. Rest is such an important

part of taking care of our body and our

mind. Rest is how we process and release

emotions and triggers…. So, they do not

turn to illness or distress. Many people are

currently living in a permanent state of

‘fight or flight’.

This happens when we are experiencing

prolonged periods of stress or anxiety. It is

our survival instinct firing into action so that

we are ready to deal with the imminent

danger. The problem with modern life is

that we are so often in this adrenaline state

that our body no longer knows the

difference between ‘real’ threat and the

threats we imagine and run in our minds

when we are anxious. It is caused by our

Autonomic Nervous System (or ANS). That is

our survival instinct system and every 4

seconds it scans our internal and external

environment to check if we are safe. If it

perceives any threats (real or imagined) it

fires our ‘fight or flight’ response. This in turn

creates physical changes in the body, it

causes our hearing to alter and perceive

different frequencies, our vision changes

causing our peripheral vision to narrow.

Our body is flooded with adrenaline and

cortisol so we can react quicker to the

danger. Living in this state for too long can

cause adrenal fatigue and problems with

the organs, it can have many physical

effects on our system and cause us to

overreact, get over-emotional and feel we

are unable to cope.

So how do we help ourselves? Well, the only

thing within our body that has the power to

reset the Autonomic Nervous System is the

breath. Deep, slow breaths can reset the

‘fight or flight’ response, especially the

exhale breath. Taking long, slow deep

breaths can really help us to reconnect

back in with our bodily systems and

communicate to our body that all is well.

Anxiety Breathing is when we breathe in

deeply for the count of 4, hold our breath

for the count of 7, and very slowly exhale

for the count of 8. Done for several minutes

with focused attention, this can quickly slow

the ANS and return our body (and our

mind) to the feeling of safety. It may feel

strange at first and it may take a few

practice breaths but if you persevere this

deep breathing technique can really help

with all forms of anxiety.

Panic / anxiety attack

1.Breath in for 4 seconds

2.Hold your breath for 7 seconds

3.Exhale breath for 8 seconds

4.Repeat once or twice more

This causes as autonomic nervous

system shift from sympathetic

(flight or fight reaction) state to a

parasympathetic response

Use this for

panic/anxiety attacks, exams,

presentations.

voice to be your main focus and just listen,

with no pressure, no expectation, just allow

their voice to carry you away.

This is the main point of meditation. To stop

that busy monkey mind and all the

overthinking. So, stop thinking about it and

just listen and lie there. Dont worry if you fall

asleep or if it takes you a while to relax… just

give yourself permission to just lie there and

see what happens.

Like everything these things take practice!

You wouldn’t expect to go to the gym once

and then be able to run a marathon. Your

body needs to get used to doing new things

before they feel comfortable.

Meditation is also very helpful and again has

physical benefits to the body, mind and soul.

It is not just sitting cross legged chanting OM.

When the brain is monitored both before

and after meditation real physical changes

can be measured. The brain following

meditation naturally produces more calming

hormones and happy chemicals and also it

helps that ANS reset into a feeling of safety.

Combining meditation and breath can really

make a difference to anxiety disorders and

all mental health issues. I have personally

seen people greatly improve their wellbeing

simply by adding a little meditation and

breathwork into their daily routine.

So, stick with it… even if it isn’t great the first

time you will get much better at it and

probably very quickly and you will really start

to see and feel the benefits.

IF YOU LISTEN WHEN

YOUR BODY WHISPERS

YOU WON’T HAVE “TO HEAR IT SCREAM!

I often hear people say that they can’t

meditate, or they are no good at it… to that

I reply, ‘stop trying’. To successfully meditate

all you have to do is lie down and rest and

allow your mind to stop thinking, i know

sounds easy right… but most of us find that

soooo hard!

My top tip is to listen to a guided meditation

(there are many great ones on YouTube or

other apps), find one with a voice you like (I

often hear how the voices are annoying).

Then simply lie down in a quiet place, put

your headphones in and listen to the voice.

Dont ‘try’ to do anything. Just allow their

The Man Cave!

As the sun shines and the Olympics kicks in,

your man will want to escape to his "Private

area" and take in the full extent of all the

sporting events taking place this summer

without being interrupted by trivial problems

such as, "The house is burning down!!".

The "Man Cave" (Or shed as it is better known), is

that area where "your man" will escape to, to

contemplate important decisions in life such as,

"Have I got enough rawplugs in my tool box, and

come to think of it do I need a bigger Toolbox?"

Recently the "Man Cave" has moved on from Friday

Night Dinners, Martin Goodmans shed where he

would escape to look at his rocks or his 20 year old

tinned meat, (If you haven't seen it then watch it,

brilliant comedy!) to state of the art places where

you could quite easily live for the rest of your life.

Instead of a wooden shed, you now have places

where you can watch your footie, have your

draught beer and a fridge for your tinnies and now

they are so good, the wife wants to spend time in

there discussing such important issues such as who

should partner Harry Kane up front for England or

explaining the offside rule, (Well maybe not the

offside rule, somethings should never be discussed)

So what are the essentials for the 21st Century's man

cave? Well depending on the size of the

aforementioned property, you need Beer,

preferably Draught Beer, but if not a well stocked

Fridge, State of the art TV to watch the Footie, Pool

Table, Dart board, comfortable chairs as you will

spending a lot of time in there, avoiding all those DIY

job's that wifey had planned for you and most

importantly, depending on the time of the year

space for the World Cup/ Euros/ Olympics/ British &

Irish Lions wall chart so you can plan your viewing.

Once you have your Man Cave planned and

stocked with your ESSENTIAL items you can sit back

and take stock of your life knowing that it just

doesn't get any better than this, well that's until you

get a knock on the "Shed" door and wifey's telling

you that those shelves aren't going to put

themselves up or the toilet is STILL leaking!! Ahh well

we can but dream!!

Wrekin Goes

From Strength

to Strength

New facilities will be officially

unveiled at a Shropshire school

next term as pupil numbers

continue to grow.

Wrekin College will take the wraps

off a state-of-the-art dance studio

and second artificial sports playing

surface with the new academic

year set to herald in the next

exciting chapter in the school’s

history.

More than 500 pupils will be on the roll

at the school in September, which

means it will be bigger than it has ever

been whilst clocking up a number of

achievements in the last two years

despite the disruption of the pandemic.

A new £2.7million Music School opened

in January 2020 and earlier this year

Wrekin welcomed global music stars

Sheku and Isata Kenneh-Mason to

perform for pupils in a Covid-secure

setting.

The school also held a tennis

masterclass with ATP stars Danny

Sapsford and James Auckland inviting

more than 80 pupils to take part in a

number of Covid-secure sessions.

Pupils also recorded record-breaking

exam results in 2020, completed a

series of employability boot camps led

by national industry leaders, and, in a

particular highlight, eight musicians at

the school secured their Grade Eight

qualification despite lessons having to

go online.

Headmaster Mr Tim Firth said today

that pupils had continued to work

towards significant achievements

throughout three national lockdowns

and he was extremely proud of the way

the people at the school had coped

throughout a period of great

uncertainty.

“We are very much looking forward to

next year and embracing every

opportunity for pupils, parents, staff and

our whole community to get the most

out of Wrekin and what this school has

to offer,” said Mr Firth.

“There is a sense of pride in what we

have done and how we have come

together but we know that we also need

to look ahead and plan what more we

can do for when restrictions will be

lifted further. I want that to be a cause

for great excitement and enhance the

positive attitude we have in our

community.

“Throughout the last 18 months we

have approached each new challenge

by doing what we can wherever we can

to just get on with things. It has served

us well in that we have not dwelled on

what we cannot do but instead focused

on what we can.

“At times that has meant staff and

pupils have had to innovate and put in

the extra hours and effort to make it

happen but it has paid off. I believe our

pupils feel a sense of empowerment

from a whole new set of skills they have

learned and we have been encouraged

by how they are approaching this next

stage of their lives - that includes our

current pupils and our leavers now

ready to emerge from the classroom

into the real world. We very much look

forward to welcoming our new

Wrekinians in September and working

with them on

all fronts to develop

them.''

Mr Firth said the new

dance studio would have

a professional sprung

floor together with

full-height mirrors and

would allow the school to

offer a new range of

classes to pupils and

performances for

audiences.

He added that sporting

fixtures had returned in

the summer term leading to a number

of successes in cricket, tennis and

athletics and that staff have organised a

full schedule for the Autumn term.

“It is so vital that we understand how

much young people have missed taking

part in performance events and getting

out there to compete in the sporting,

musical, dramatic and many other

arenas. These are essential building

blocks in encouraging confident and

engaged learners and promoting

wellbeing. As a school, it was in times

of Covid and is always our duty to pull

out all the stops to ensure these events

happen. I want to take this opportunity

to pay tribute to our staff and families

who have shown such determination,

patience and co-operation to get extracurricular

events back on for our

pupils.”

The Old Hall School which shares a

campus with Wrekin College will also

be using the new facilities while they

will also be open to community groups

as restrictions are lifted fully.

Girls of Tettenhall College Up Their Game Internationally

The sportswomen of Tettenhall

College have taken lockdown’s

sporting challenges head on

and shown that true

determination can transpire into

great things by becoming

international champions.

For most, sporting activities have

been on pause over the past 12

months, from barren football

pitches to vacant gymnasiums,

resulting in many of us being

confined to our homes, with the

only green space being a garden.

International Gymnast, Gabriella

W (Year 10), National Cricketer,

Davina P (Year 9) and National

Cheerleading Champion, Scarlett

W (Year 9), have maintained strict

training regimes and faced

challenging practise

environments, emerging as even

more esteemed and celebrated

Sportswomen.

With gymnasiums having to close

their doors through the pandemic,

fervent gymnasts have faced true

motivational challenges, with no

apparatus or gym space to

practise. Gabriella, from

Wednesfield, made it her mission

to use this unique period to hone

her core skills and form through

daily zoom sessions, resulting in her

fitness and sporting condition

being at a record high. Gabriella is

now en-route to being selected for

the Commonwealth Games, 2022.

Time away from the pitch did not

stop Davina, who maintained her

striking and fielding skills, alongside

her teammates, through weekly

online competitions in addition to

completing strength and

conditioning programmes. Davina

who is also from Wednesfield, has

been selected by Central Sparks

Academy, an elite pathway

programme that is part of the

England pathway and Davina has

hopes to be selected by the

England cricket team. Aside her

sporting endeavours, Davina has

been somewhat of a media figure

through the African-Caribbean

Engagement programme (A.C.E),

which is a strategic programme

designed to support diverse talent

from the grassroots to the elite in

cricket and encourage a better

talent identification within Black

communities.

Having been selected for Team

England prior to Lockdown 1.0,

Scarlett, who lives in Bridgnorth,

has continued to attend seven

virtual classes a week alongside

numerous strength and

conditioning sessions.

Competitions have recently

concentrated on individual skills

and Scarlett won a national

‘turning’ competition via her

submission entry online. She

continues to upload weekly videos

of her choreography to team

England and is looking forward to

travelling internationally with the

squad once restrictions lift.

“Witnessing the girls’ success

(amidst a pandemic) has been

incredibly heartening to see. Their

passion and drive for each of their

sporting passions is astounding and

I could not be prouder,”

concluded Mrs Causebrook, Head

of Girls’ Sport.

KAM

BALAGGAN

Expert Cataract, Retinal and Eye Floater Surgeon

"LET ME HELP YOU TO REGAIN YOUR VISION”

EYE FLOATERS

ARE YOU TROUBLED BY EYE FLOATERS?

Eye floaters are typically small pieces of debris that

float in the eye’s vitreous humour. Often, they can also

be caused by sudden separation of the vitreous jelly

from the back surface of the eye (posterior vitreous

detachment), which is a natural part of ageing). Most

people find floaters minimally troublesome, but for

some they can be a significant source of irritation and

may interfere with your quality of vision and life.

Modern surgical techniques have made the permanent

treatment of eye floaters safer than ever. Mr Balaggan

specialises in the permanent removal of symptomatic

troublesome eye floaters using the very latest microincision

techniques, with the procedure being

performed in around 25 minutes as a day case patient.

If you are over 45 years old and have suffered with eye

floaters for over 6 months then get in touch to arrange

an assessment by Mr Balaggan. Do read the reviews

from his former floater patients on Trustpilot.

EXCELLENT

UNLOCK THE POTENTIAL WITH

PRIVATE CATARACT SURGERY

If, like many patients, you view the possibility of never

having to wear glasses again as truly liberating, then

you should consider private cataract surgery. Privately,

I can provide state-of-the-art premium multifocal,

extended depth of vision (EDoF), toric astigmatism–

correcting and enhanced monofocal IOLs designed to

give you much more independence from glasses than

the basic single vision lenses available through the

NHS.

Your eyesight is precious, and you deserve the best

range of vision that modern science can offer. So,

invest in your future with premium IOLs, and enjoy

being able to read and use your computer or tablet

with much less dependence on annoying spectacles –

something that perhaps you have not been able to do

since your early 40s.

I was diagnosed with cataracts and had the cataracts removed (Feb/March) and lens

implant. I now have perfect long vision. I no longer need to wear contact lenses or

glasses the first time for over 50years. I cannot thank Mr Balaggan, Alex and his team

at Nuffield Wolverhampton for their professionalism. Following my initial consultation

Mr Balaggan explained the procedure and gave me every confidence in him. Thank you

so much. Ann Lokucewcz

I certainly would have no hesitation in recommending Mr Kam. His knowledge and experience gave me full confidence

from square one and the actual procedures carried out including the Epiretinal Membrane removal was fully effective and

minimal in any negative effects. He and his Secretary were fully co-operative regarding delays incurred because of my

Wife’s condition, which was very much appreciated. Roger

Moorfields Eye Hospital London trained Cataract &

Vitreoretinal Surgeon in the Midlands

I am a full time NHS Consultant in Cataract and Vitreoretinal Surgery

and was extensively trained at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London,

Ophthalmic training. I am acutely aware of the responsibility my

patients place in my surgical skill. That is why I pride myself in doing

my utmost to provide a first-class unbeatable service, one which places

you at the centre of all decisions made in order to restore your vision

and quality of life to their maximum levels. You can rest assured,

knowing that you will be looked after by a dedicated and

Connect with nature this summer

These summer months are

the perfect opportunity to

get outside and connect

back to nature particularly if

you’ve spent lockdown in a

built up area. There are so

many health benefits from

being outside such as

reduced stress, better sleep

and lower heart rate. The

Japanese call it forest

bathing or ‘shinrin yoku’ and

the beneficial effects of

being outside are being

studied more and more.

Combining being outdoors with

yoga is a great way to amplify

this positive sense of wellbeing.

Yoga heightens your self

awareness but by also using all

of your senses it allows you to

connect into your surroundings.

Why not explore your local

green spaces and find a quiet

space to spend some time

doing a few sun salutations,

some nature inspired postures

(tree anyone?) or even some

gentle breathing and

meditation.

Here are a few tips to make the

most out of the experience:

1. Check the space and make

sure that there are no stones,

prickly leaves, twigs or anything

else that will be uncomfortable

underfoot. You may want to

take a mat or a blanket

although there are also more

health benefits from letting your

bare feet come into contact

with the earth so it’s up to you if

you use a mat or not.

2. Whilst we want to increase

our levels of vitamin D, you also

want to make sure that you

don’t get sunburn so wear a

good quality, eco friendly

sunscreen. My favourite is Tropic

Skin Shade which is also reeffriendly

if you take a swim in the

sea this summer.

3. Check the pollen count and

take some anti histamine. If you

suffer from hayfever, practicing

yoga near some trees can

quickly turn into a sneeze fest so

choose a space which is less

likely to irritate your nose or visit

a beach instead!

4. Pay attention to your senses,

take time to look and observe

the patterns and colours in

nature. Notice the fragrance of

the plants around you, the

temperature of the air and the

feel of any breeze on your skin.

Listen and allow yourself to be

absorbed by the sounds of the

nature and wildlife around you.

5. Allow your breath to become

soft and slow and really take

time to be present and

immersed in the experience.

If you need any inspiration for

yoga postures or sequences

then just head over to my

Instagram or Facebook page

but if you find yourself feeling

too hot to do anything, here is a

cooling breath practice called

‘Sitali’ for you to try.

* Start by sitting comfortably

with the spine in a neutral

position and take a few slow

diaphragmatic breaths.

* Begin to curl up the sides of

the tongue and stick it out of

the mouth slightly so that it looks

like a tube or straw. If this isn’t

possible, make a small opening

at the mouth like you were

about to whistle.

* As you breathe in slowly

through your tongue/mouth,

notice the cooling sensation as

the air passes over your tongue

and draws down into your lungs.

* Close the mouth and exhale

through the nose.

* Repeat for a couple of

minutes or until you feel cooler.

So hopefully you might decide

to flow with the elements this

summer, but at the very least

you have something to help

cool you down when the heat

gets too much. Or am I being

too optimistic about a British

summer?!

Paws

for thought

Please follow our Facebook pet page

@SocialSceneDogs and share photos of your

own furry friends - See you soon!

Woof Woof

Summer is here,

and we love it, but...

As summer temperatures soar, here are some lifesaving tips

on caring for my friends in the scorching heat:

Woofwoof!

If you

think your dog

has heatstroke,

you need to act

FAST!

Take them to a cool,

shaded area.

Apply towels soaked in

cold water to their head,

neck and chest and let

them drink water or lick

an ice cube. Never place

them directly into ice cold

water or give them too

much to drink as they

may go into shock.

MIND YOUR WALKING HOURS

If you have a dog, walk and exercise your pup only in the early

morning and late evening. Never do it in the middle of the day.

When outside, take breaks in the shade and have water available.

PROVIDE PLENTY OF WATER AND SHADE

Keep your pet in the shade as often as possible. While dogs and

cats like to sunbathe, direct sunlight can overheat them

(especially dogs) and lead to heat stroke.

NEVER LEAVE YOUR PET IN THE CAR

Most pets love riding in cars. But they wouldn’t enjoy being stuck

in it somewhere in the parking lot when it heats up to over 100

degrees. You may think leaving your pet in a car for a few minutes

is no big deal. However, it can take less than 10 minutes to develop

heat stroke in dogs and cats inside the hot vehicle.

APPLY SUNSCREEN

Believe it or not, pets get sunburns too, especially those with short

or light hair coat. And just like with people, it hurts and can even

lead to skin cancer. If you are planning to spend a day out in the

sun with your furry companion, apply sunscreens every 3-4 hours

to the least hair-covered spots: bellies, ears, and nose. Use only

sunscreens made specifically for pets. Your vet could advise on the

product suitable for your pet fur kid.

DON’T SHAVE YOUR PET

You might think shaving your dog a cat for the summer is the best

solution to overheating. But a pet's coat is naturally designed to

keep it cool during the summer and warm in the winter. Feel free

to trim the fur on your pet in the summer, but never shave. Be

sure to leave at least a full inch of hair to protect your pet’s skin

from sunburns. And don’t forget about your pet’s regular

grooming schedule, no matter what season it is.

With a rise in

Mental Health

maybe it’s time to

think differently?

The clouds started to descend as I dealt with a local

homeless man, flanked by two colleagues I felt sick, I

felt angry, out of control, I could feel another panic

attack coming on but I’m a cop I can’t show

weakness, I can’t show I’m not feeling right.

This was the moment I realised I couldn’t hide anymore,

years of not feeling good enough, different, disconnected

made me pushed harder, I needed to prove my worth. The

more I pushed, the more my life started to slip away and on

the verge of suicide I broke 9 months later.

My name is Marcus Matthews, award winning therapist and

coach and I have always had a sense of service, but at a

time when I needed help, I was failed, I wanted to know

why I felt the way I did, but instead I was put into a system

that didn’t help me it just ticked a box.

Rapid Transformational Therapy RTT® is different, it uses

the power of hypnosis along with other therapeutic

techniques to set you free in just one session and no more

than 3.

Having been trained by renowned International Therapist

Marisa Peer (founder of RTT) I now help people like you get

your life back quicky, so you can understand why you feel

the way you do and then support you in making the change

you need.

So who do you know who needs that change?

Find out more by downloading my e-book from my

website and book a FREE call to find out more

https://www.makeyourlifecount.co.uk/help

I didn’t want to cope and manage, I wanted to know why I

couldn’t feel free, why was I working so hard but achieving

so little – Why was I a failure?

I now know how powerful Why is. Why is root cause, Why

is the feeling you attach to the stories you tell yourself

everyday.

Did you know your life is pretty much mapped and fixed by

the time you are 8 years old, 80% of who you are is

programmed into you by others.

That programming is automatic, locked away in the vault of

your subconscious mind, so how can you fix something you

are not even aware of?

We treat people based on what they know, not what they

don’t know. The trauma or moment we realise we are not

feeling great is not the foundation, that feeling was born

much earlier.

Welcome to our regular column

where we keep you up to date

with the latest vegan news

and views

We are situated in The Parade Shops, at the back of St Mary’s Church,

which is a stone’s throw from the town centre and full of fabulous

independent businesses. If you haven’t visited yet, come and have a

look at the great products on offer.

It is lovely to see some beautiful summer weather at last and its the

perfect opportunity to try some of the amazing vegan picnic foods

and snacks that we stock in The Vegan Hub. You can also purchase

a pot of ice cream to cool you down on hot days.

The Parade, Shrewsbury

THE VEGAN BUZZ

By far our most popular product at

the moment is the Love Raw cream

wafer bars which are a vegan

version of Kinder Bueno. Not only are

they really tasty they are also low in

calories and come in dark or white

chocolate.

How can you resist?

If you are coming into The Parade Shops in Shrewsbury, take a look

at all the other lovely independent businesses too.

Tea anyone?

Afternoon tea has

become really popular at

the moment, and there

are plenty of local cafes

who are able to provide

vegan afternoon tea with

vegan sandwiches,

savoury snacks, scones

and cakes. You can also

easily make your own.

Sandwich fillings can

include salad with vegan mayo, ‘chickpea’ tuna or homous with

microgreens, and you can buy lots of different savoury snacks like veggie

sausages, spring rolls and falfals. The sweet options can feel like a challenge

to some people but you can buy squirty vegan cream to serve with scones,

there are meringues without egg, and many shops now sell vegan cakes,

or you can make your own. There is a really simple shortbread recipe here

which you could use, and it is especially nice dipped in chocolate!

Vish and Chips

There are new and exciting vegan products coming

out all of the time, and banana blossom is something

a lot of vegans are talking about. It is the tear

shaped flower that grows at the end of banana fruits.

It can be eaten raw, but most popular use in vegan

cooking is as a replacement for fish. It has a flaky

texture so with the addition of some seaweed for that

fishy taste and some batter, you can get your very

own vegan version of fish and chips. It can also be

used to replace meat in all sorts of recipes such as

curries and stew. So now you can have your own

vegan version of fish and chips when you are out on

the beach this summer.

200g Naturli block or other hard

vegan margarine

100g caster sugar

300g plain flour

Vegan Shortbread Biscuits

Put all of the ingredients into a bowl and

mix together until throughly blended.

I use my hands to do this to ensure all the

margarine is fully incorporated.

Add a teaspoon of water and mix. The

mixture should now form into a ball, if it

doesn’t add a bit more water but make sure you don’t add too much.

Roll out the mixture and put onto a baking tray. Make some indentations with a fork and top

with a sprinkling of caster sugar.

Put in a preheated oven at 180C for about 15 mins until the shortbread starts to turn golden

brown. Cut into slices and serve when cool.

Supporting Vegan Owned Businesses

It is really important at the moment that we all work hard to help out small businesses that have been hit hardest by

COVID 19. With shops and markets having to close it is like starting afresh with some businesses, as many customers have

started buying all their products online. At The Vegan Hub we try to stock as many products as we can by small businesses,

and many of these businesses are owned by vegans too. If any of our customers know of any companies that need support

or vegan products that they would like us to stock we encourage them to let us know so that we can do what we can to

help during these difficult times.

But where do you get your

protein?

Some of the questions we get asked most often are

about how to have a balanced diet when you are a

vegan, and where vegans get various vitamins and

minerals. There is plenty of information online about the

best foods to eat to ensure you have a well balanced

diet. It is important to eat lots of different fruit and

vegetables as well as whole grains to get all the vitamins

you need, and for protein you need soya, pulses, nuts

and seeds. The more

varied a diet you have the

better. If people are still

worried, there are plenty of

vitamins you can take too.

If you have any existing

medical conditions you will

need to consult your

doctor before taking any

supplements.

Happy Birthday to Us!

On the 16th June 2020 we opened up

The Vegan Hub for the first time in

The Parade Shops, Shrewsbury.

To celebrate this we will be

opening on that day and

every Wednesday after that

so you can now visit the shop

on Tuesday-Saturday

from 10am-4pm

The Vegan Hub can be found downstairs in The Parade Shops, Shrewsbury. To find out more you can go

to their website www.the-vegan-hub.co.uk or email theveganhub@yahoo.com

Kelda Wood MBE to take on triathlon challenge...

Since sustaining an irreparable leg injury in 2002,

Kelda Wood MBE has climbed Mount Kilimanjaro,

become the first adaptive female to row solo

across the Atlantic to raise awareness for her

charity Climbing Out and she was the first

adaptive woman to reach the summit of Mount

Aconcagua - the highest mountain in South

America.

Her next challenge is to complete a series of triathlons this

year, despite not being able to run! Kelda plans to document

her journey overcoming more barriers like this on her new

platform ‘Creating Momentum’ to help inspire others. She

wants people to use Creating Momentum as a place to

share stories and information that will help motivate others

to take on and overcome life’s physical and mental

challenges.

Kelda was listed on the New Year’s Honour List 2021 to

receive an MBE for her work with the charity she founded -

Climbing Out, which helps people who have been through

mental or physical trauma to rebuild confidence, self-esteem

and motivation.

On the same day she received the email from the Cabinet

Office, she was also diagnosed with breast cancer and had

to pause her training to have a mastectomy. Kelda said,

“Setbacks like that are part of life. It is all about taking them

on board and figuring out how to move forward. The

diagnosis hasn’t stopped me taking on the triathlon

challenge, it just made me even more determined to

succeed in taking part. Creating Momentum is about facing

life’s hurdles, finding solutions and achieving something you

didn’t think possible. As I always say, ‘It’s not about saying I

can’t, it’s about saying, how can I?’

UK Triathlons have provided Kelda with support and

guidance to aid her training.

Kelda said, “I have always wanted to compete in triathlons,

but I thought I couldn’t because of my leg injury. I can’t run, I

can’t swim very well, and I can’t use a standard bike. But

then I realised I wasn’t practising what I preach – I wasn’t

finding a solution to my challenge and asking, ‘how can I?’

“I wanted to find a way to adapt so I could compete in

standard triathlons. I approached several triathlon

organisers, and they have given me the go ahead to take

part non-competitively. I’m learning how to swim in a new

way and Bicycles by Design in Ironbridge have created a

espoke bike for me – I’m very grateful for their incredible

support.

“Spokz provided me with a racing wheelchair that I

intended to use for the running part of the races.

Unfortunately, I faced another setback as it hasn’t been

workable for me on hills, and I can’t increase training on my

arms as it causes swelling where I had my mastectomy.

This has been another ‘how can I?’ moment, and even if I

have to walk or shuffle my way through that bit of the race,

that’s what I’ll do! I’m very grateful to Spokz for giving me

the opportunity to try the chair.”

The new bicycle comes from leading manufacturer,

Duratec. Peter Bird from Bicycles By Design commented,

"It's amazing to be working with Kelda as she trains and

competes in a number of triathlons across the season. She

is an inspirational individual who demonstrates the benefits

of cycling and wider sports and how they can change your

life. Working with Duratec, who Bicycles By Design

partners with, we have designed a unique and bespoke

bicycle for Kelda that fulfils her sporting needs".

Steve Dent from Spokz adds, “It has been a pleasure to

link up with Kelda and support her in her triathlon

challenges. As a disabled person myself I am fully aware of

the need to adapt to many situations. The events that

Kelda will be taking part in will hopefully show others with

physical limitations that it is possible to take part in many

different events, you just need the drive and determination

to push the barriers.”

Kelda adds, “I’m not trying to get an upper hand by using

adaptive equipment, I’m showing that it’s all about finding

solutions to overcome life’s obstacles. I hope to create

some momentum which will inspire and motivate others to

take on their own challenges head on.”

Kelda is taking part in the AJ Bell World Triathlon in Leeds

this June, Always Aim High Events’ Snowman triathlon in

July and UK Triathlon’s Shropshire event in September.

Local Charity Receives Grants to Help Veterans

Climbing Out has been awarded

two grants by The Armed Forces

Covenant Fund Trust to help the

charity support members of the

armed forces, veterans

and their family members.

Climbing Out, which operates out of

Shropshire, helps people across the

UK. The charity works with people aged

18 years and over who have been

through a life-changing injury, illness, or

trauma to rebuild their confidence,

self-esteem, and motivation. Their

programmes combine outdoor activities

from kayaking to abseiling, with mental

resilience and personal development

coaching, to help their participants

accept what has happened in the past

and start to find a new way forward.

The Positive Pathways grant has been

awarded for Climbing Out’s mental

resilience project. This will fund two

programmes specifically for veterans,

plus walk and talk days to help

Veterans get active, reduce social

isolation, and integrate into the

community.

The Force for Change grant has been

awarded for their Armed Forces

Support project. This will give serving

personnel, veterans and their adult

family members access to places on

the 5-day outdoor programmes, walk

and talk days and online workshops.

Kelda Wood who founded the charity

said she has been bowled over by the

support from The Armed Forces

Covenant Fund Trust. She said, “These

grants are going to help us support so

many people from the armed forces.

Whatever life-changing challenges they

are facing, from dealing with PTSD to

an injury that has changed the way they

live, we are here to help them find a

new way forwards. We would love to

hear from Veterans, serving personnel

and their families who would like to find

out more about what we do.”

The charity is currently recruiting for an

outdoor programme specifically for

veterans, which will run from July 12 to

16 in North Wales. They also have

places available for veterans and

members of the Armed Forces

community on other programmes taking

place between August and November.

The charity held its first programme of

2021 earlier this month with participants

being challenged to abseil off cliffs,

climb mountains and canoe up the

River Severn. Kelda said, “The

participants grew in confidence,

stretched their boundaries, and started

believing in themselves to enable them

move forwards in life. It was a brilliant

start to our 2021 programmes!”

Kirsty who attended the programme

said, “Climbing Out has given us time to

heal and learn how to live, not just

survive. My confidence has grown and

I’ve learned strategies to cope.

Previously life was bleak and now it’s

shining bright!”

Aimme, another participant, adds, “I

feel genuinely hopeful for the future for

the first time since my traumatic

experience. Being pushed out of my

comfort zone alongside people that are

struggling like me has made me feel

like I’m actually living rather than

surviving.”

Gemini - (22nd May - 21st June)

Lilith enters Gemini July 18th, this Black Moon reveals hidden

secrets and feelings, coming to the fore...The Last Quarter

Moon August 30th sees a questioning of relationships, are

we disillusioned?? Illicit love affairs or pairings do mean we

live in the moment, yes!! Sometimes we have to break free,

sometimes we realize what matters, whichever way this

summer goes for you, relationships do seem key...

Cancer - (22nd June - 22nd July)

The New Moon July 10th is a great time for new starts

Cancer, especially work promotions or projects

achievement is recognised. Mercury enters Cancer July

11th good for incoming communications important letters,

emails. August sees the feisty side of Cancerians shouting, 'I

will not behave how other people want me to!' Feeling sick

of old beliefs or being 'respectable' expect heated

debates as you wield your sword...

Leo - (23rd July - 23rd August)

July 22nd sees the glorious Sun enter Leo, with

overindulging and showing off, your favourite time of year is

here where it's all about Leo! Mercury enters July 28th which

brings talk of travel plans! The New moon August 8th sees

Leo clearing the air, with the ability to see past people's

'masks' and call them out on untruths... There is that gut

instinct within that you know you can feel and trust... go

with it...

Virgo - (24th August - 22nd Sept.)

July 22nd sees Venus enter Virgo, smiling upon the area of

love and romance, then 'boom!' July 29th planet Mars joins

the party, enhancing sexual desires! Then in pops Mercury

August 11th, where we're communicating wonderfully, all

our hope's, needs and desires expressed! Then last but not

at all least the Sun shines in life as August 22nd sees the Sun

entering your sign. Wow Virgo! Enjoy enjoy enjoy!

Libra - (23rd Sept - 23rd October)

August 16th sees the arrival of Venus, where love becomes

the focus, with commitment for those already involved

deepening, and impulsive action for the singletons! August

30th sees Mercury brings its influence to communications,

so were really able to address and express our feelings

straight from the heart. Book in a break now though or even

just a rest as we could do with a little recharge of the

batteries on the work/kids front.

Scorpio - (24th Oct - 22nd November)

July 18th sees the Waxing Gibbous Moon stage heightening

your competitive edge, you can charm the birds out the

trees with your sense of enthusiasm... ideas are forming but

just who shall we have on board? It's about the home also

Scorpio, someone might need a nudge towards change,

let's get things done! The Moon reaches First Quarter stage

August 15th sees your passion for important matters

Sagittarius - (23rd Nov - 21st Dec.)

The July 20th Waxing Gibbous Moon phase is good to

harness those ambitions. On another note, children or

family members may need a bit of help, but you may have

to dig to get it out of them, especially those that are very

proud and don't like to ask for help or admit weakness in

any form. Just be careful Sagittarius to not self-sabotage,

there is a balance with helping others, but self-care is

important to...

Capricorn - (22nd Dec - 20th January)

For Capricorn the July 22nd Waxing Gibbous energy is

perfect for those focusing upon promotion, climbing the

career ladder or promoting one's own business or getting

ones CV out there and seen...fresh starts seem to be on the

agenda. Is it yourself or loved ones that are looking at a

house move? times are for moving on, moving forward, in

terms of the home this seems to be timed just right...

Aquarius - (21st Jan - 18th Feb)

The Full moon on August 22nd brings a sense of

completeness, 'So now it is done'... In love there is a sense

of 'no going back' now or even with family members or

friends 'were in this together' There does seem to be a lot of

support around you Aquarius, maybe you are breaking

away from tradition, looking at a new way of thinking,

breaking norms, going away from expectations, treading

new paths... with a new version or just the 'real' version of

you on show...

Pisces - (19th Feb - 20th March)

On July 28th Jupiter leaves Pisces leaving in its wake a

clearer and more realistic view of the world.... Sometimes

Pisces we can get carried away with fantasy but now

Jupiter is set to leave it takes some of the fantasy and

escapism with it. If you have been in denial about your true

feelings, then now it's time to look again with honest eyes...

How do I really feel actually? and What actions should I

take now I can see the things in reality? are questions Pisces

may find themselves asking...

Aries - (21st March - 20th April)

July 1st and 2nd sees the Moon in its last quarter in Aries, a

time to challenge any situations where one suspect's

manipulation. Once this is managed an easy opportunity

yells 'take me' Follow your instincts to achieve creative

highs...especially if working with other fire signs. On another

note, medication works better when it is taken rather than

when it is sitting on the shelf, so help yourself, why struggle?

Taurus - (21st April -21st May)

Be careful Taurus of trying to take on too much, one cannot

pour from an empty cup... Use July 4th Waning Crescent

Moon energy to negotiate to get a fairer deal, why should

you do the lions share? By August 22nd the Waning

Gibbous sees your confidence reputation and commitment

being recognized. Sometimes saying 'No' is respected,

especially within the workplace...

Car Review

FORD FOCUS ST-LINE X EDITION

I only have to nip into the town centre and park in one of

the concrete multi storey car parks to find out how much

bigger the car I am road testing is in comparison to that

manufactured in the sixties, at the same time as the multi

storey was built. I might well be able to get onto the space

but with cars parked either side it would be a miracle to

be able to open the door.

The Ford Focus I am road testing this week is a good

example, as it is wider and larger than its predecessor.

The hatchback is a popular family car but in sporty ST-Line

X Edition guise, the five door has full body styling kit, red

brake calipers, rear privacy glass, 18” alloys and ST Line

wing badges.

In the cabin the flat bottomed steering wheel and partial

leather trim with red stitching continue the sporty theme.

Such a desirable looking car will inevitably attract thieves.

Keyless entry fobs of all makes of cars have been targeted

with ‘relay box’ equipment, used to extend the signal from

fobs in homes to unlock and start vehicles parked outside.

Driving to the rescue is Ford with a new motion sensor.

The Ford fob detects when the car has been stationary for

longer than 40 seconds and triggers a sleep mode, which

will not respond to attempts to hack its signal via a ‘relay

box’ or through the misuse of other specialist equipment.

The ST-Line is packed with other technology which I like

such as heated front seats, heated steering wheel and

quick clear heated windscreen. Rain sensing wipers and

dual zone electronic air temperature control were also

much appreciated.

I did not like the sports tuned suspension, especially

because of the numerous potholed roads in my area. To

limit the impact of potholed roads, the Focus has a system

which senses when a wheel is falling into a pothole and

adjusts the suspension to limit how far the wheel drops.

Because the tyre and wheel do not fall as far, they do not

strike the opposite side of the pothole as harshly on exit.

The rear suspension can respond even faster than the

front, with a signal from the front wheel providing a

pre-warning to the rear wheel before it reaches the

pothole. This all happens in a split second.

Safety features include a pre collision assist with

autonomous emergency braking and pedestrian/cyclist

detection. This surged into operation as I was reversing in

a cul de sac. The cyclist was on the pavement. I had good

sight of him and in my mind he was nowhere near the

rear of the car. However, I felt a jolt as the automatic

emergency braking engaged. Not called for I thought but

I guess it is better to be safe than sorry. There are also

front and rear parking sensors.

Safety features when motorway driving include lane

keeping aid with lane keeping alert, cruise control with

intelligent speed assist and electronic stability control.

The 1 litre EcoBoost hybrid engine proves that fuelefficiency

and performance can go hand-in-hand. The

small but powerful engine with a slightly gruff voice has

quick acceleration when needed and low CO2 emissions.

At traffic lights, the engine will cut out but restarts

immediately when needed.

The Ford Focus ST-Line has only improved with age and is

more spacious and practical, stylish and good value for

money.

KIA SOUL EV FIRST EDITION

By Sue Cooke

The world’s first electric forecourt can accommodate 36

electric vehicles charging simultaneously. Drivers can add

200 miles of range in 20 minutes. Electricity is partly

generated from solar power canopies above the chargers.

The driver relaxing lounge has free wifi, dedicated children’s

area, retail outlet, business meeting pods and even a

wellbeing zone with exercise bikes which when used,

generate more electricity! This is the future and this

forecourt exists now, in Essex with plans for 100 more in the

next five years.

And having this sort of infrastructure will perhaps be the

trigger for increasing sales of fully electric vehicles. In

January one in every six Kia vehicles sold was fully electric,

accounting in total for 16.7 per cent of all Kia sales in the UK.

Kia has some of the most practical EV models, like the Soul

EV, which I road tested this week.

The third generation Soul EV has a fresh and funky design,

full LED headlamps and is longer than its predecessor by

80mm. Alloy wheels have increased to 17inches and there

is a choice of three exterior bi-tone colour paintwork, with

contrasting roof and door mirrors as standard. It is the most

youthful looking Soul yet.

The crossover has a spacious interior with black leather

upholstery fitted as standard. I like the looks of the 10.25

inch floating touchscreen infotainment system and for those

insisting on good music, there are the signature tweeter 10-

speaker Harman/Kardon® premium sound system with

subwoofer, external amplifier and front centre speaker.

I also like a head up display which is a new addition to the

Soul EV and one that provides instant information on road

speed and the speed of the car without you having to move

your eyes from the road ahead.

I was lucky enough to road test the feature rich First Edition

model which has standard safety technologies such as driver

attention warning, lane keeping assist and forward collision

warning. Blind spot detection when motorway driving and

rear cross traffic alert are useful. The reversing camera

system has guidelines to ensure straight parking and rear

parking sensors. And when I bought a couple of big pots at

the garden centre, I found the boot space of 315 litres will

extend to 1,339 litres when the seats are folded down.

The main reason why this Kia is so practical is because the

Soul can be recharged to 80 per cent battery life in just 54

minutes and has a 280 miles driving range with combined

use. With my city driving life I could have achieved a range

of 402 miles Kia says. The Soul is up to 30 per cent more

energy efficient than Europe’s current best-selling electric

car.

Kia has just launched KiaCharge, an app, which gives owners

of battery electric vehicles, access to more than 13,900

charging points across the UK, using a single account.

Created in partnership with Digital Charging Solutions, Kia

owners can also access more than 178,000 charging points

across 28 European countries without the need for

additional contracts.

Kia’s seven-year, 100,000-mile warranty will cover the electric

motor and battery pack. Kia Corporation has announced

plans to launch seven new dedicated EVs between now and

2027. If they are all as practical and innovative as the Soul

EV and with the addition of the fantastic forecourt

infrastructure at Braintree, to be repeated all over the UK,

the automotive future, minus diesel and petrol doesn’t seem

such a great loss.

Following the

continuing journey of a

local business owner

For Adrian, the owner of Extra Help

Shropshire, the last three months

since he began his journey have

been truly inspiring, as his

business has continued to grow

and his reach across the county

has extended further.

With a background in relationship

management and ensuring customer

satisfaction, and with his personal

experience of supporting his mum who is

affected by Alzheimer’s, his longing to help

people, particularly those who are

vulnerable, led him to open a local office of

Extra Help to assist residents of Shropshire

to make their lives a little easier, and help

people retain their independence.

He explains, “I knew during lockdown that I

wanted to get out there and help, and the

more I learned about Extra Help, the more

I felt it was the

perfect opportunity

for me to make a

real difference,

particularly assisting

some of the more

vulnerable in our

society.”

“As business has steadily grown, the need

for our services has become increasingly

clear. Whether supporting busy

professionals who simply don’t have time

to keep on top of their cleaning after a

gruelling working week, to helping

sheltered living residents with meal

preparation, a bit of gardening, or some

companionship, we are providing a

compassionate and professional service,

and the feedback we have had so far is

incredible.”

“Lockdown has kept families apart, and

we’ve had enquiries from worried relatives

in different parts of the country who need

to know their parents are safe and eating

well. We fulfil an important role for our

clients for whom there are no personal

care needs but plenty of help around the

home required.”

“As a first time business owner, it has been

an exciting journey so far, and a real

learning curve, but I am now looking

forward to the coming months, with my

focused, reliable, caring team in place to

continue to support residents across the

whole of Shropshire.”
