Food Review

The Lamb Inn

As a mid-week treat, my partner Mike and I

decided to visit the Lamb at Edgmond for a meal

and few drinks. Upon entrance it was clear how

well managed the venue is and all staff operating

in a very safe environment. As we were shown to

our table, I couldn’t help but notice the new

courtyard with a fantastic feature wall, it all

looked so trendy and a real eye catcher.

Looking through the menu, we both commented

on the how much choice there was, everything

from steaks, burgers, pizzas, pastas and a

fantastic choice of traditional favourites. There is

also a great seafood and fish selection if you like

your fish.

For starters I opted for the breaded brie wedges

and Mike the chicken and apricot terrine. Both

large portions and well presented, we eagerly

tucked in. My brie wedges sat on a bed of rocket

with beetroot puree, beetroot chunks and

sugared walnuts. The combination of flavours and

textures was a pure delight, the brie was warm

and velvety as it oozed out of the breadcrumbs, it

was simply perfect in every way and a real taste

Mike’s terrine was a combination of chunky

chicken pieces, leeks, and apricots,

accompanied with a side salad, sweet piccalilli

and two pieces of warm ciabatta. I couldn’t help

but try some, I loved all the array of flavours and

textures, meaty, fruity and tangy with the piccalilli,

again, it all went together superbly. Another

fantastic, and large starter.

For mains Mike had opted for the 8oz sirloin and I

chose the black and blue burger. They certainly

had the WOW factor for presentation and looked

The steak was accompanied with a salad wedge

with a topping of choice being Moydens Wrekin

blue cheese, hand-cut chips, roasted mushroom

and cooked tomato, with a blue cheese sauce

added. Requested to be cooked medium it was

spot on, exactly how we both like it cooked, it was

chargrilled and truly was cooked to perfection,

tasty, juicy it was just absolutely incredible,

presentation &

so much so I had to ask the waiter who was the supplier,

locally sourced from Edwards’s meats just outside Newport.

Another showstopper was the sauce, so much flavour,

creamy and delicious, I often cook my own blue cheese

at home, and it’s never been this good. The chips were

also pure delight and must be triple cooked, so soft, and

fluffy with a crispy outer, I was constantly pinching a chip

and dipping it in the blue cheese sauce, I will be choosing

this next time! It really was a faultless dish in every way and

must be the best steak either of us had tasted in a long

On to my black and blue burger, a chargrilled brioche

bun with lettuce, tomato, gherkins an 8oz prime beef

burger with thick smoked bacon and melted Wrekin blue

cheese and mustard mayo, served with French fries and

Despite me loving blue cheese and burgers, I was a bit

apprehensive upon ordering this as Ive had black and

blue burgers in the past (at different venues) and the

burger has been overpowered by the blue cheese,

thankfully this was not the case here. The burger was just so

meaty and tender, not over seasoned or full of anything

but fantastic succulent beef. The thick bacon with melted

Wrekin blue on top was superb, with all the salad and the

chargrilled bun I thoroughly enjoyed every mouthful, we

really had chosen two fantastic mains, my only comment

was I would probably ask for the homecooked chips with

my burger next time as they were so nice, thankfully Mike

loved my French fries and was happy to share.

Sitting back with very full tummies and a gorgeous glass of

Sauvignon Blanc, we debated a dessert. With it being a

very warm evening, I thought a selection of luxury farm ice

creams would be the ideal finish and Mike couldn’t resist

the sound of the pear and caramel cheesecake with

salted caramel and ginger ice cream.

The choice of ice creams was quite extensive, choc

chunk, mint, cookie dough, mixed berries, strawberry,

vanilla and salted caramel and ginger. I went for chock

chunk, mint and cookie dough, a great combination and

arrived as a sundae topped with shortbread biscuits. The

ice-creams were fantastic especially the mint, I’d forgotten

how much I love mint choc-chip ice-cream.

Mike’s cheesecake was equally as tasty and again a burst

of well-chosen flavours, caramel, pear, gorgeous moist

cheesecake and the salted caramel and ginger icecream,

so many flavours that all just gelled together to

form perfection.

We really enjoyed every course and struggled to decide if

the steak or burger was a better choice with them both

being so outstanding, what is for sure though we will be

back to taste more of the fantastic food and drinks on offer

at The Lamb at Edgmond.

Despite so many covid setbacks and closures over

2020/2021, it really is great to see Lance, Debbie, and the

team at the Lamb inn at Edgmond are continuing to bring

fantastic service and good quality food in a beautiful

Chatsworth is high on the ‘to do’ list, when visiting country houses in England. Renowned as being one of

the finest country estates to visit in the UK, Chatsworth House, with its 105 acre garden attracts many

visitors, from global origins, throughout the year.

Chatsworth House is the seat of the Duke of Devonshire and this stately residence has been home to the

Cavendish family since 1549. Located on the east bank of the River Derwent, in Derbyshire’s Peak

District, close to Chesterfield and Bakewell, the magnificent property is surrounded by stunning views

and countryside.

With the House (25-plus rooms to explore, including regal State Rooms) and Gardens, Events, the Estate’

Farm Shop, plus Farmyard, Playground and much more, there is certainly something for all the family to

enjoy at Chatsworth. Very impressive Works of Art and Sculptures, for example, hold much interest for

numerous visitors.

Award-winning Peak Ales Brewery produces real ales and gained much interest from the outset. Located

on the Chatsworth Estate, the craft ales’ producer also offers Chatsworth Gin (40% vol). Following several

years of experimenting and development, this small batch gin utilises selected botanicals, from the

Chatsworth Estate, to produce this high-quality, classic, London Dry Gin. Botanicals used include

Chatsworth lemons, lemongrass, lemon verbena, plus banana leaf. The banana has an important and

very interesting role at Chatsworth and the Cavendish banana is well documented in Chatsworth’s

history. During the 1830’s, Joseph Paxton was head gardener to the 6th Duke of Devonshire and

introduced bananas to Chatsworth.

Chatsworth Gin exudes the crispness of excellent citrus flavours and, complemented with other infused

botanicals, along with banana leaf, makes for a production that is well-balanced, smooth and has great

pleasure for the mouthfeel and palate sensation.

Chatsworth Gin and Peak Ales are available at the Visitor Centre shop, as well

as online. Orders are processed, then dispatched quickly and efficiently.

Brewery Tours are available – perhaps surprise someone special?

F: Eurasia Tandoori Restaurant

It was our first meal out since lockdown and My

partner Mike was desperate for a good curry, so

after hearing great reviews we opted for the

award-winning Eurasia Tandoori Restaurant in

Bridgnorth, and by the end of the evening it was

truly clear why it was award winning!

Greeted by very friendly staff, we were shown to our

table, handed menus, and offered drinks and

poppadom’s. Eurasia is fully licensed with some great

beers on offer including wine by the glass or bottle.

The poppadom’s arrived with 5 different chutneys and

sauces, including the gorgeous onion salad. We were

off to a great start. As we sat munching away, we

started to look through the starters there was the usual

on offer but also some dishes neither of us had heard of

before, there was also plenty of choice with a meat

section and a vegetarian and seafood section.

With tikka pakora being my all-time favourite starter, I

had to order this, however we also toyed between the

kasli pitta and the Mirpuri malai, both dishes were new

to us and sounded amazing and with it being our first

dinner date out in a long time, we opted for all three.

All dishes looked fab however the Mirpuri malai looked

spectacular, so Ill start with this. A layer of potato fritter

topped with sliced chicken tikka, cooked in a pickle

and pineapple chunky sauce, topped with another

potato fritter, more chicken and chutney and another

potato fritter. To say this was a taste explosion is an

understatement. The juicy chutney combined with

pineapple, chicken tikka and potato fritter was a pure

delight, so many flavours and textures it was incredible, I

would go back to Eurasia for this dish alone, highly

Next the chicken pakora, I’m

confident enough to say I have

tasted enough pakoras to be a

critic and I can very often be let

down with it being more like a

chicken nugget that a proper

pakora, thankfully this was not the

case here! The chicken had been

spiced perfectly, deep fried and

then coated with chickpeas flour

and deep fried again – exactly how

it should be cooked, a great starter

with the wedge of lemon, fresh

salad and mint yoghurt.

Next to try was the kasli pitta, which

I can only really describe as a luxury

samosa. Chicken and potato with

onions and spices all wrapped up in

crispy pastry, apparently it is a very

traditional Sylheti dish with of course

Eurasia adding its own twist. Really

tasty and a good combination of

Out of our three starters, we

enjoyed them all, but I really can’t

recommend the Mirpuri malai

enough, a must try.

On to mains. Again, so many new

choices to chose from, I’ve never

seen such a new and adventurous

curry house menu, it was fantastic.

Our waiter had highly

recommended the lamb sherpuri,

so that was first added to the list

and then I noticed the Tawa dishes,

so the chicken tikka variation was

added too, and we also opted for

the shahi chicken. Knowing we

could take leftovers home to enjoy

the next day we thought it was

great to try the three mains, with a

pilau rice, special naan and a saag

aloo added as sides.

Everything just looked a pure

delight, a feast of flavours, where

do we start? The lamb sherpuri is an

award-winning dish in itself, so felt it

best to start here. I will often avoid

lamb in a curry as it can be too

tough, but this was succulent, juicy

and cooked to perfection in the

most fabulous sauce. A good

amount of spice with fenugreek

and ginger, but what made this

dish so special was the crunchy

garlic pickle, wow, this was a totally

new flavour to me and it was

spectacular, just so many zesty

flavours in one, with the juicy lamb

and sauce it was clear why this was

an award winning dish I very highly

recommend this, just so different

and delicious, with a good medium

spice to it.

So next to try was the Tawa dish,

which I’m sure not many of you

have heard of either. A semi-dry

unique dish, a choice of chicken

tikka, king prawn or vegetable

cooked with capsicum, onions,

fresh herbs and garnished with

cheddar cheese served on a

sizzling cast iron Tawa plate. The

cheese is placed first so it melts and

almost slightly burns, then the

chosen topping on top, it is then

placed on a plate and the cheese

peeled off. It was amazing! The dish

itself mainly consisted of chicken

tikka and onions and eaten with

the cheese was superb, I really

enjoyed this dish, and so did Mike

although claimed the lamb was his

clear favourite. Again, another

unique and deliciously tasty dish

that I would recommend.

Mild/medium spiced.

Onto the third dish, the shahi

chicken, a very meaty and mild

dish, perfect for those not keen on

spice, but also not creamy and

coconutty like a korma, which can

often be too much. Whole pieces

of chicken breast filled with spicy

minced meat, peas and potato in

a delicious mild sauce. Compared

to the other two dishes this was a bit

too mild for me, but if you like a

mild and meaty curry this is the

perfect dish for you.

The meat was succulent in all

dishes, starters and mains and very

obvious everything is cooked fresh

with high quality ingredients. We

couldn’t fault anything and there

really is something for everyone’s

The side dishes also deserve a big

mention, so the special naan was

stuffed with tikka, saag, cheese,

keema, green chilli and garlic and

looked really good, Mike, a spice

lover, loved it, I did feel it was too

spicy for me, so this is definitely the

naan bread if you like a kick or I

would recommend you stick to

another of the great naans on

offer. The rice was perfect, and

when I say I saved the best to last, I

really did, well that’s as long as you

like saag aloo – which I really do!

Arriving in a traditional metal dish I

was a little surprised to see the saag

aloo with no sauce, just potatoes,

spinach and spices. Just when I

thought I was going to be

disappointed, I literally tasted the

best saag aloo Ive ever tasted, in

fact my mouth is watering now just

thinking about it! The potatoes were

so soft and buttery and the juicy

spinach bursting with flavour, this

was a very luscious dish that I

wasn’t prepared to share with Mike.

We were wowed by every dish,

there really was nothing we didn’t

enjoy or lacked a wow factor, each

dish with its own unique flair. We

finished off with some mint choc

chip ice-cream and left wanting to

tell the world how good Eurasia

really is. We will definitely be back!

Roberto brings Street Food To

Wellington Market!

Roberto Licursi launched MammaLucia street food early

in 2020 in Wellington Market, and despite fighting through

lockdown since, Rob is loving every minute of bringing

tasty, quality food to the locals.

Being a massive lover of street food when I have visited

Asian countries, I think it's fantastic that we are finally

getting our own taste of street food on our doorsteps.

Having spoken to Roberto, the ‘Italian cooking’ passion

just bursts out of him, and I learnt he has been cooking

from a young age, working as Top Chef in many fine

dining restaurants, including his own street food stall on

many popular markets right across the Midlands for the

past 15 years.

Eventually wanting his own baby, MammaLucia was born

and from this small stall literally everything is cooked.

Specialising in wraps and burgers, Roberto also has daily

specials and ready meals, cooked, prepared, and ready

for you to take home, reheat and enjoy!

What I find great about Mamma Lucia is all ingredients

(where possible) are sourced locally on the market,

supporting other local traders and having a small stall

there, instead of a posh restaurant with overheads, he

can offer, fresh, locally sourced, quality produce at a low

“The best wraps you

MammaLucia is currently open for breakfast and lunch on

Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays with

evenings coming soon. Rob is also offering a stop – call –

delivery to your car service outside the Market gates, by

Wilkinsons, so you can have food on the go, and more

dishes will be added.

Roberto has a passion for cooking with fish and often

ready meals are fish dishes, with also pastas and curries

regularly on offer, he sees what's available on the market

and gets cooking! The burgers are meaty 6oz burgers

with salad and many toppings such as halloumi, chorizo,

bacon, cheese, anything that takes your fancy.

I think Roberto is a fantastic example of supporting local

and staying local and deserves all our support to try his

The Quarry Park is the must do activity in the sunshine. Join us for this

breath-taking experience of the local environment and have oodles

We’re also very proud to be able to invite you to discover another of

our local rivers, The Tern at the National Trust’s Attingham Park. There

the hour long paddle takes you back in time and newly experience

the history of Attingham Park. Views from the river were originally

intended only for the landowners and their guests, which is very

reminiscent of a scene from Wind in the Willows.

It is a gentle meandering river, perfect for beginners. You’ll paddle

through the landscape, and wind your way through some enchanting

woodland. You may even catch the plop sound of a water vole as it

goes about its day. It is a wonderful place to spot all kinds of river

wildlife normally hidden from view, especailly the enormous

dragonflies that dance around the rivers edge. A great experience

that melts away the stresses of every day life.

Eye floaters are typically small pieces of debris that float in the eye’s vitreous humour. Often, they can also be caused

by sudden separation of the vitreous jelly from the back surface of the eye (posterior vitreous detachment), which is a

natural part of ageing). Most people find floaters minimally troublesome, but for some they can be a significant

source of irritation and may interfere with your quality of vision and life. Modern surgical techniques have made the

permanent treatment of eye floaters safer than ever. Mr Balaggan specialises in the permanent removal of

symptomatic troublesome eye floaters using the very latest micro-incision techniques, with the procedure being

performed in around 25 minutes as a day case patient. If you are over 45 years old and have suffered with eye floaters

for over 6 months then get in touch to arrange an assessment by Mr Balaggan. Do read the reviews from his former

floater patients on Trustpilot.

Top 5 Bedroom styling tips this summer

As many of us will be inviting people

back into our homes this Summer, you

may want to be sure your bedrooms are

styled & ready for your guests to enjoy

their comeback stay!

Here are our top 5 tips to have your

bedrooms looking & feeling great &

styled with a new makeover

1: Making a statement with colour &

Bed bases & bedsteads come in all sorts of

colours, textures & materials. From a luxury

fabric look to an elegant metal design, a

room can look lifted, energised & totally

transformed. Choosing bold & bright colour

bedsteads such as blue hues then you will

be very much in vogue this season. Mixing

up the look even more can be bought in

with the addition of soft furnishings,

cushions & pieces of furniture that can

easily make-over a room with contrasting or

complimentary colours. Upholstery beds are

still king in terms of style & can really give

that statement look

3.Save space & store it

The bedroom is not typically the place for

storage. However, there are more options

now as beds are also a piece of furniture

that can also provide it. We are all familiar

with the classic drawers in the divan where

we can keep bedding, spare quilts & pillows

etc close by. There are now a number of

different bed styles that can provide both a

sleeping space & a storage solution at the

same time. The Ottoman style is popular in

either an end lift or side lift & is ideal for

storing clothes, suitcases & in some cases

golf clubs! There is also a hideaway option

with is like an ottoman in terms of space but

accessed through a draw style entry with a

curtain flap over it! Who says storage can’t

be glamorous?

4: Maximising Floor Space – Loft style

An extension of the modern bedroom look is

opting for a loft-style approach. The key to

loft-styling is ensuring you maximise the

amount of floor space and place your

furniture around the room with as much

natural light flooding into the space, as

possible. The best beds to put in to

maximise this is a low-profile bed as these

are the perfect option to help achieve a

contemporary style. They are slightly raised

from the floor & have a low base bed frame

which really gives that effortlessly chic look!

You can achieve this with metal bed frames

5.: Be Versatile

As we have spent the majority of the past

year inside our homes, we can now

appreciate the need for versatile furniture.

Some people don't have the space to

occupy a permanent guest bedroom, and

therefore have to rely on alternatives like

sofa beds or the dreaded blow-up beds

when guests come to stay! A guest bed with

a pull out is a great option for those visits &

it folds away to save space the rest of the

2: Dress it up with a Headboard

These can really frame the space you sleep

in & can come in all sorts of shapes &

sizes. Choose something that will add

texture to the space & make it a real focal

point in the room. Going bold & brave with

colour can achieve this & maybe contrasting

metal & material & to really frame the bed

go for a wall mounted option & make that

A guide to

taking care

of you!

Selfcare is not selfish We live in a society

that is quick to judge our actions as

selfish, to make us feel bad and guilty

about putting ourselves first but the

reality is that no one else can take care

of us better than we can take care of

No-one else, no matter how close we are to

them, knows how we truly feel inside, how

our body feels, how we are coping with the

stress of the world and what we need to

make us feel better. Only we truly know

what we need and sometimes even

determining that for ourselves can be

difficult, we need to take a moment of

quiet, to stop and listen to ourselves.

Self-love and care is not just an occasional

bubble bath or a new pair of shoes, real Self

Care is making a commitment to yourself

and putting your needs first. This is not

selfish! In Fact, it is the most unselfish thing

you can do! The better you feel the more

able you are to GIVE to everything and

everyone else!! If you don’t listen to yourself

and just keep going until you are exhausted

you may experience all kinds of negative

emotions, anger, resentment even

depression, and more commonly illness, as

your body will just create a situation to

make you stop and listen! When you board

an aircraft and listen to the Safety

Demonstration, they ALWAYS tell you that

you must put on your oxygen mask BEFORE

helping anyone else, why do you think this

is?? Because if you dont you will pass out

and not be able to help ANYONE.

We get so caught up the in the ‘rat race’,

Our jobs, our families, our commitments,

and responsibilities seem to consume us

and few of us really listen to ourselves. Even

when we do there is often an excuse at

hand. We are too busy at work, our kids

need our attention, we have too many

things on our ‘To Do’ list or my personal

favourite… we just can’t say NO!!

The reality is that we can all make some

time for some self-care, it is not a whimsical

ideal - it is an absolute NECESSITY!!! I think

this saying really sums up the trap we often

find ourselves in….

This is the same lesson; you cannot give

from any empty tank! So, if you need it I am

now giving you full permission to look after

yourself, to take some timeout and to put

yourself first! Be kind, be compassionate, be

empathic but make you do all of this for

YOURSELF as well as other people!

SELF care

Is Not Selfish!

I treat so many people that are

overwhelmed, over tired and energetically,

emotionally, and physically exhausted yet

they still find it so hard to make time for

themselves or take proper care of themself

because they feel some kind of duty to

everyone else or guilt for putting themselves

This is trauma response. If you keep going in

this state, you will become sick. Our body

develops illness when it is trying to

communicate something to us, but we are

refusing to listen. Rest is such an important

part of taking care of our body and our

mind. Rest is how we process and release

emotions and triggers…. So, they do not

turn to illness or distress. Many people are

currently living in a permanent state of

‘fight or flight’.

This happens when we are experiencing

prolonged periods of stress or anxiety. It is

our survival instinct firing into action so that

we are ready to deal with the imminent

danger. The problem with modern life is

that we are so often in this adrenaline state

that our body no longer knows the

difference between ‘real’ threat and the

threats we imagine and run in our minds

when we are anxious. It is caused by our

Autonomic Nervous System (or ANS). That is

our survival instinct system and every 4

seconds it scans our internal and external

environment to check if we are safe. If it

perceives any threats (real or imagined) it

fires our ‘fight or flight’ response. This in turn

creates physical changes in the body, it

causes our hearing to alter and perceive

different frequencies, our vision changes

causing our peripheral vision to narrow.

Our body is flooded with adrenaline and

cortisol so we can react quicker to the

danger. Living in this state for too long can

cause adrenal fatigue and problems with

the organs, it can have many physical

effects on our system and cause us to

overreact, get over-emotional and feel we

are unable to cope.

So how do we help ourselves? Well, the only

thing within our body that has the power to

reset the Autonomic Nervous System is the

breath. Deep, slow breaths can reset the

‘fight or flight’ response, especially the

exhale breath. Taking long, slow deep

breaths can really help us to reconnect

back in with our bodily systems and

communicate to our body that all is well.

Anxiety Breathing is when we breathe in

deeply for the count of 4, hold our breath

for the count of 7, and very slowly exhale

for the count of 8. Done for several minutes

with focused attention, this can quickly slow

the ANS and return our body (and our

mind) to the feeling of safety. It may feel

strange at first and it may take a few

practice breaths but if you persevere this

deep breathing technique can really help

with all forms of anxiety.

Panic / anxiety attack

1.Breath in for 4 seconds

2.Hold your breath for 7 seconds

3.Exhale breath for 8 seconds

4.Repeat once or twice more

This causes as autonomic nervous

system shift from sympathetic

(flight or fight reaction) state to a

parasympathetic response

Use this for

panic/anxiety attacks, exams,

voice to be your main focus and just listen,

with no pressure, no expectation, just allow

their voice to carry you away.

This is the main point of meditation. To stop

that busy monkey mind and all the

overthinking. So, stop thinking about it and

just listen and lie there. Dont worry if you fall

asleep or if it takes you a while to relax… just

give yourself permission to just lie there and

see what happens.

Like everything these things take practice!

You wouldn’t expect to go to the gym once

and then be able to run a marathon. Your

body needs to get used to doing new things

before they feel comfortable.

Meditation is also very helpful and again has

physical benefits to the body, mind and soul.

It is not just sitting cross legged chanting OM.

When the brain is monitored both before

and after meditation real physical changes

can be measured. The brain following

meditation naturally produces more calming

hormones and happy chemicals and also it

helps that ANS reset into a feeling of safety.

Combining meditation and breath can really

make a difference to anxiety disorders and

all mental health issues. I have personally

seen people greatly improve their wellbeing

simply by adding a little meditation and

breathwork into their daily routine.

So, stick with it… even if it isn’t great the first

time you will get much better at it and

probably very quickly and you will really start

to see and feel the benefits.

I often hear people say that they can’t

meditate, or they are no good at it… to that

I reply, ‘stop trying’. To successfully meditate

all you have to do is lie down and rest and

allow your mind to stop thinking, i know

sounds easy right… but most of us find that

soooo hard!

My top tip is to listen to a guided meditation

(there are many great ones on YouTube or

other apps), find one with a voice you like (I

often hear how the voices are annoying).

Then simply lie down in a quiet place, put

your headphones in and listen to the voice.

Dont ‘try’ to do anything. Just allow their

The Man Cave!

As the sun shines and the Olympics kicks in,

your man will want to escape to his "Private

area" and take in the full extent of all the

sporting events taking place this summer

without being interrupted by trivial problems

such as, "The house is burning down!!".

The "Man Cave" (Or shed as it is better known), is

that area where "your man" will escape to, to

contemplate important decisions in life such as,

"Have I got enough rawplugs in my tool box, and

come to think of it do I need a bigger Toolbox?"

Recently the "Man Cave" has moved on from Friday

Night Dinners, Martin Goodmans shed where he

would escape to look at his rocks or his 20 year old

tinned meat, (If you haven't seen it then watch it,

brilliant comedy!) to state of the art places where

you could quite easily live for the rest of your life.

Instead of a wooden shed, you now have places

where you can watch your footie, have your

draught beer and a fridge for your tinnies and now

they are so good, the wife wants to spend time in

there discussing such important issues such as who

should partner Harry Kane up front for England or

explaining the offside rule, (Well maybe not the

offside rule, somethings should never be discussed)

So what are the essentials for the 21st Century's man

cave? Well depending on the size of the

aforementioned property, you need Beer,

preferably Draught Beer, but if not a well stocked

Fridge, State of the art TV to watch the Footie, Pool

Table, Dart board, comfortable chairs as you will

spending a lot of time in there, avoiding all those DIY

job's that wifey had planned for you and most

importantly, depending on the time of the year

space for the World Cup/ Euros/ Olympics/ British &

Irish Lions wall chart so you can plan your viewing.

Once you have your Man Cave planned and

stocked with your ESSENTIAL items you can sit back

and take stock of your life knowing that it just

doesn't get any better than this, well that's until you

get a knock on the "Shed" door and wifey's telling

you that those shelves aren't going to put

themselves up or the toilet is STILL leaking!! Ahh well

we can but dream!!

Wrekin Goes

From Strength

to Strength

New facilities will be officially

unveiled at a Shropshire school

next term as pupil numbers

continue to grow.

Wrekin College will take the wraps

off a state-of-the-art dance studio

and second artificial sports playing

surface with the new academic

year set to herald in the next

exciting chapter in the school’s

More than 500 pupils will be on the roll

at the school in September, which

means it will be bigger than it has ever

been whilst clocking up a number of

achievements in the last two years

despite the disruption of the pandemic.

A new £2.7million Music School opened

in January 2020 and earlier this year

Wrekin welcomed global music stars

Sheku and Isata Kenneh-Mason to

perform for pupils in a Covid-secure

The school also held a tennis

masterclass with ATP stars Danny

Sapsford and James Auckland inviting

more than 80 pupils to take part in a

number of Covid-secure sessions.

Pupils also recorded record-breaking

exam results in 2020, completed a

series of employability boot camps led

by national industry leaders, and, in a

particular highlight, eight musicians at

the school secured their Grade Eight

qualification despite lessons having to

go online.

Headmaster Mr Tim Firth said today

that pupils had continued to work

towards significant achievements

throughout three national lockdowns

and he was extremely proud of the way

the people at the school had coped

throughout a period of great

“We are very much looking forward to

next year and embracing every

opportunity for pupils, parents, staff and

our whole community to get the most

out of Wrekin and what this school has

to offer,” said Mr Firth.

“There is a sense of pride in what we

have done and how we have come

together but we know that we also need

to look ahead and plan what more we

can do for when restrictions will be

lifted further. I want that to be a cause

for great excitement and enhance the

positive attitude we have in our

“Throughout the last 18 months we

have approached each new challenge

by doing what we can wherever we can

to just get on with things. It has served

us well in that we have not dwelled on

what we cannot do but instead focused

on what we can.

“At times that has meant staff and

pupils have had to innovate and put in

the extra hours and effort to make it

happen but it has paid off. I believe our

pupils feel a sense of empowerment

from a whole new set of skills they have

learned and we have been encouraged

by how they are approaching this next

stage of their lives - that includes our

current pupils and our leavers now

ready to emerge from the classroom

into the real world. We very much look

forward to welcoming our new

Wrekinians in September and working

with them on

all fronts to develop

Mr Firth said the new

dance studio would have

a professional sprung

floor together with

full-height mirrors and

would allow the school to

offer a new range of

classes to pupils and

performances for

He added that sporting

fixtures had returned in

the summer term leading to a number

of successes in cricket, tennis and

athletics and that staff have organised a

full schedule for the Autumn term.

“It is so vital that we understand how

much young people have missed taking

part in performance events and getting

out there to compete in the sporting,

musical, dramatic and many other

arenas. These are essential building

blocks in encouraging confident and

engaged learners and promoting

wellbeing. As a school, it was in times

of Covid and is always our duty to pull

out all the stops to ensure these events

happen. I want to take this opportunity

to pay tribute to our staff and families

who have shown such determination,

patience and co-operation to get extracurricular

events back on for our

The Old Hall School which shares a

campus with Wrekin College will also

be using the new facilities while they

will also be open to community groups

as restrictions are lifted fully.

Girls of Tettenhall College Up Their Game Internationally

The sportswomen of Tettenhall

College have taken lockdown’s

sporting challenges head on

and shown that true

determination can transpire into

great things by becoming

international champions.

For most, sporting activities have

been on pause over the past 12

months, from barren football

pitches to vacant gymnasiums,

resulting in many of us being

confined to our homes, with the

only green space being a garden.

International Gymnast, Gabriella

W (Year 10), National Cricketer,

Davina P (Year 9) and National

Cheerleading Champion, Scarlett

W (Year 9), have maintained strict

training regimes and faced

challenging practise

environments, emerging as even

more esteemed and celebrated

With gymnasiums having to close

their doors through the pandemic,

fervent gymnasts have faced true

motivational challenges, with no

apparatus or gym space to

practise. Gabriella, from

Wednesfield, made it her mission

to use this unique period to hone

her core skills and form through

daily zoom sessions, resulting in her

fitness and sporting condition

being at a record high. Gabriella is

now en-route to being selected for

the Commonwealth Games, 2022.

Time away from the pitch did not

stop Davina, who maintained her

striking and fielding skills, alongside

her teammates, through weekly

online competitions in addition to

completing strength and

conditioning programmes. Davina

who is also from Wednesfield, has

been selected by Central Sparks

Academy, an elite pathway

programme that is part of the

England pathway and Davina has

hopes to be selected by the

England cricket team. Aside her

sporting endeavours, Davina has

been somewhat of a media figure

through the African-Caribbean

Engagement programme (A.C.E),

which is a strategic programme

designed to support diverse talent

from the grassroots to the elite in

cricket and encourage a better

talent identification within Black

Having been selected for Team

England prior to Lockdown 1.0,

Scarlett, who lives in Bridgnorth,

has continued to attend seven

virtual classes a week alongside

numerous strength and

conditioning sessions.

Competitions have recently

concentrated on individual skills

and Scarlett won a national

‘turning’ competition via her

submission entry online. She

continues to upload weekly videos

of her choreography to team

England and is looking forward to

travelling internationally with the

squad once restrictions lift.

“Witnessing the girls’ success

(amidst a pandemic) has been

incredibly heartening to see. Their

passion and drive for each of their

sporting passions is astounding and

I could not be prouder,”

concluded Mrs Causebrook, Head

of Girls’ Sport.

Car Review

By Sue Cooke

Scene Local Media 01952 780058

I only have to nip into the town centre and park in one of

the concrete multi storey car parks to find out how much

bigger the car I am road testing is in comparison to that

manufactured in the sixties, at the same time as the multi

storey was built. I might well be able to get onto the space

but with cars parked either side it would be a miracle to

be able to open the door.

The Ford Focus I am road testing this week is a good

example, as it is wider and larger than its predecessor.

The hatchback is a popular family car but in sporty ST-Line

X Edition guise, the five door has full body styling kit, red

brake calipers, rear privacy glass, 18” alloys and ST Line

wing badges.

In the cabin the flat bottomed steering wheel and partial

leather trim with red stitching continue the sporty theme.

Such a desirable looking car will inevitably attract thieves.

Keyless entry fobs of all makes of cars have been targeted

with ‘relay box’ equipment, used to extend the signal from

fobs in homes to unlock and start vehicles parked outside.

Driving to the rescue is Ford with a new motion sensor.

The Ford fob detects when the car has been stationary for

longer than 40 seconds and triggers a sleep mode, which

will not respond to attempts to hack its signal via a ‘relay

box’ or through the misuse of other specialist equipment.

The ST-Line is packed with other technology which I like

such as heated front seats, heated steering wheel and

quick clear heated windscreen. Rain sensing wipers and

dual zone electronic air temperature control were also

much appreciated.

I did not like the sports tuned suspension, especially

because of the numerous potholed roads in my area. To

limit the impact of potholed roads, the Focus has a system

which senses when a wheel is falling into a pothole and

adjusts the suspension to limit how far the wheel drops.

Because the tyre and wheel do not fall as far, they do not

strike the opposite side of the pothole as harshly on exit.

The rear suspension can respond even faster than the

front, with a signal from the front wheel providing a

pre-warning to the rear wheel before it reaches the

pothole. This all happens in a split second.

Safety features include a pre collision assist with

autonomous emergency braking and pedestrian/cyclist

detection. This surged into operation as I was reversing in

a cul de sac. The cyclist was on the pavement. I had good

sight of him and in my mind he was nowhere near the

rear of the car. However, I felt a jolt as the automatic

emergency braking engaged. Not called for I thought but

I guess it is better to be safe than sorry. There are also

front and rear parking sensors.

Safety features when motorway driving include lane

keeping aid with lane keeping alert, cruise control with

intelligent speed assist and electronic stability control.

The 1 litre EcoBoost hybrid engine proves that fuelefficiency

and performance can go hand-in-hand. The

small but powerful engine with a slightly gruff voice has

quick acceleration when needed and low CO2 emissions.

At traffic lights, the engine will cut out but restarts

immediately when needed.

The Ford Focus ST-Line has only improved with age and is

more spacious and practical, stylish and good value for

Car Review

Scene Local Media 01952 780058

By Sue Cooke

The world’s first electric forecourt can accommodate 36

electric vehicles charging simultaneously. Drivers can add

200 miles of range in 20 minutes. Electricity is partly

generated from solar power canopies above the chargers.

The driver relaxing lounge has free wifi, dedicated children’s

area, retail outlet, business meeting pods and even a

wellbeing zone with exercise bikes which when used,

generate more electricity! This is the future and this

forecourt exists now, in Essex with plans for 100 more in the

next five years.

And having this sort of infrastructure will perhaps be the

trigger for increasing sales of fully electric vehicles. In

January one in every six Kia vehicles sold was fully electric,

accounting in total for 16.7 per cent of all Kia sales in the UK.

Kia has some of the most practical EV models, like the Soul

EV, which I road tested this week.

The third generation Soul EV has a fresh and funky design,

full LED headlamps and is longer than its predecessor by

80mm. Alloy wheels have increased to 17inches and there

is a choice of three exterior bi-tone colour paintwork, with

contrasting roof and door mirrors as standard. It is the most

youthful looking Soul yet.

The crossover has a spacious interior with black leather

upholstery fitted as standard. I like the looks of the 10.25

inch floating touchscreen infotainment system and for those

insisting on good music, there are the signature tweeter 10-

speaker Harman/Kardon® premium sound system with

subwoofer, external amplifier and front centre speaker.

I also like a head up display which is a new addition to the

Soul EV and one that provides instant information on road

speed and the speed of the car without you having to move

your eyes from the road ahead.

I was lucky enough to road test the feature rich First Edition

model which has standard safety technologies such as driver

attention warning, lane keeping assist and forward collision

warning. Blind spot detection when motorway driving and

rear cross traffic alert are useful. The reversing camera

system has guidelines to ensure straight parking and rear

parking sensors. And when I bought a couple of big pots at

the garden centre, I found the boot space of 315 litres will

extend to 1,339 litres when the seats are folded down.

The main reason why this Kia is so practical is because the

Soul can be recharged to 80 per cent battery life in just 54

minutes and has a 280 miles driving range with combined

use. With my city driving life I could have achieved a range

of 402 miles Kia says. The Soul is up to 30 per cent more

energy efficient than Europe’s current best-selling electric

Kia has just launched KiaCharge, an app, which gives owners

of battery electric vehicles, access to more than 13,900

charging points across the UK, using a single account.

Created in partnership with Digital Charging Solutions, Kia

owners can also access more than 178,000 charging points

across 28 European countries without the need for

additional contracts.

Kia’s seven-year, 100,000-mile warranty will cover the electric

motor and battery pack. Kia Corporation has announced

plans to launch seven new dedicated EVs between now and

2027. If they are all as practical and innovative as the Soul

EV and with the addition of the fantastic forecourt

infrastructure at Braintree, to be repeated all over the UK,

the automotive future, minus diesel and petrol doesn’t seem

such a great loss.

Could a WATCH alarm give

you peace of mind?

WATCH alarms offer peace of mind and reassurance to people all across Telford &

Wrekin and Shropshire, as well as their families and friends. The pendant alarm service

is not just for older people - people of all ages can benefit from it. WATCH is ideal for

people with disabilities, medical restrictions, life-limiting conditions and vulnerabilities.

The service supports individuals looking to technology to help them remain

independent in their own homes with the reassurance that help is available at the

touch of a button - 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

The lifeline pendant alarm simply connects to a phone line and is operated by the

touch of a button, via a pendant worn around the neck or wrist. A powerful microphone

on the alarm unit means that help can be called from anywhere in and around the

The alarm can also be adapted to each person’s needs with a range of add-on

equipment such as falls detectors, door contact sensors and pill dispensers.

Customer, Miss Egan, explains: “I’m epileptic and with my WATCH alarm I know that if I

have a fit my mum will be called or a paramedic can get in if necessary.”

WATCH also offers to supply and fit police approved key safes. This is useful for people

who receive care at home. For WATCH alarm customers, the code is stored safely with

the monitoring centre to be shared with emergency services if required.

WATCH is certified under the Quality Standards Framework by TEC Quality which provides assurance to its users that they deliver

quality in what is otherwise a largely unregulated industry

Carers make the difference!

The impact of Covid 19 on Britain’s care homes was a

public health crisis that no one saw coming. It brought

home to the wider public just how critical and

exceptional the role of a care worker is. Whether it is an

agency carer or a permanent carer, the compassion

and commitment needed are identical.

The demand for healthcare is an ever-growing industry

with the UK having an ageing population and one that

is expected to grow by 10 million over the next 25 years.

It’s likely that every one of us will need the skills of a care

professional at some stage of our lives; if we fall ill, as we

age, or if we need a little more support than usual in our

daily lives. As the care industry changes to meet

modern needs, new job opportunities are always

coming up, whether this is in social work, health care,

personal care, protection or support.

Working in healthcare, whether directly or indirectly to

another person, you will be changing lives and

impacting families. As a healthcare professional, you

get to have a fast-paced workday with an everchanging

atmosphere. This type of work environment

leaves professionals finishing each day feeling a sense

of fulfilment.

It is very safe to say that no two days are the same

when working in healthcare. Whether working in a ward,

dental surgery, care home or in an office, you never

quite know what is going to happen when you wake up

and head to work in the morning. The excitement of not

knowing what could come your way is a thrill of the job,

keeping you alert and guaranteed no repetition in each

shift. The healthcare sector requires regular decision

making, some good, some difficult and often on the

spot. Decisiveness, intuition and problem solving are

characteristics of anybody in healthcare. The constant

physical and mental challenges of healthcare, each

day will be full of learning and the shifts are likely to go

by quickly.

The broad scale of healthcare, means that

qualifications and medical knowledge is not necessarily

required. Not just for education leavers, more and more

people are also switching to a career in care, as job

satisfaction becomes a driving factor in our work

Healthcare is such a vast sector, that roles vary from

administration, payroll, community care, doctors,

surgeons, nursing home and social care, to name a few,

with opportunities to suit varying education and

experience levels. With services available for adults or

children, those at risk, or those who have additional

needs arising from illness, disability, age or low incomes,

there is plenty to consider.

Being able to build relationships with patients and

service users is very important and people need to learn

to trust you. These relationships can take time and effort

to build up, so you’ll also need patience, friendliness

and great communication skills.

With the industry changing all the time, there are lots of

short courses available for people to learn about

important aspects of the sector, with many employers

willing to fund or contribute to the cost of training

With extensive knowledge of both the healthcare and

recruitment industries, and with excellent relationships

with their many clients, Safehands Recruitment can give

you the right assistance and direction in finding the best

role for you.

Get in touch with us today to find out what

opportunities there are for you in the care sector.

The focus of Government is now

on the post-pandemic recovery,

to ensure that communities get

back on their feet, after these

extraordinarily challenging times.

Whatever your views on lockdown

and the easing of restrictions, we

can all agree that it is

Government’s financial support for

businesses, councils and

individuals that has meant jobs,

livelihoods and our local

economies have been protected.

From the start, Government funding

was rapidly transferred to local

authorities to be distributed to those

in need as quickly as possible. I am

grateful to officers at Telford &

Wrekin Council for their work in the

efficient distribution of this cash in

accordance with Government

In addition to funding for general

spending pressures, extra funding

has been made available

specifically for social care, given the

massive impact on the sector over

the past year. Telford & Wrekin

Council received an allocation of

£1.5 million from the Adult Social

Care Infection Control Fund – which

was vital to prevent the spread of

coronavirus in care homes and in

social care setting. The Council also

received £609,359 from the Treasury

to support the most vulnerable

families. Disadvantaged students

received nearly 1000 laptops and

tablets to ease the difficulties of

remote learning, as part of £400

million invested in supporting

children and young people needing

access to technology.

Most people will be aware of the

furlough scheme and its

effectiveness in protecting

employees’ jobs, but it is important

to also remember the wide range of

other measures announced by the

Chancellor – including VAT

deferrals, bounce back loans and

the SEISS scheme for self-employed

people. The Government has also

issued business support through

schemes such as the Local

Restrictions Support Grant and the

Additional Restrictions Grant. These

have allowed businesses in Telford

to stay solvent during this difficult

period, protecting jobs and

The Government has now allocated

Telford £22.3m from the Towns Fund,

which is a key part of our levelling

up program, boosting our economy,

focusing on skills and regeneration

of the Station Quarter and

Oakengates. I am proud of the

collaborative work of local

community leaders and business

representatives to secure this

important funding for Telford’s

I am also optimistic that with this

Government support, Telford will

bounce back from this difficult

period. The success of the

vaccination programme is of course

fundamental to this, but also the

ability of the community to come

together and work together for the

common good. With the end of

lockdown restrictions on the horizon,

local authorities continue to have

an important role to play, working

collaboratively with Government

and MPs and to administer the

Government support packages

which are helping residents return to

Throughout the pandemic the

needs and concerns of residents

shape my work as your MP. I will

continue to raise individual cases

and the issues that matter most

locally, with Ministers and

colleagues in Parliament. Please

keep getting in touch. I am here to

help as we get through this difficult

time and together build our future.

We’re excited to announce our new range of

homes will be available at our MMXXI

development at Redhill in Telford this autumn!

This September, Bovis Homes will be

launching a stylish new range of

spacious homes to suit both first time

buyers and those looking to move up

the ladder, we have a range of 3 and 4

and 5bedroom homes. Designs favour

openplan kitchendiners and selected

styles offer a downstairs utility room

and optional study or snug spaces;

ideal for the new trends of working

from home. The larger properties,

such as the fourbedroom Juniper,

offer additional features of bifold

doors leading to the garden, plenty of

storage space and an ensuite.

With plenty of going on in and around

the town of Telford, the Wrekin is

certainly one of the biggest attractions

in the area. The walks are great for a

rambler’s retreat or general sunny day

out. Along with the Wrekin, the Iron
