Little by little, every day, sometimes almost incredibly, things are returning to normal
worldwide, much to the relief of individuals, families, and world and local economies.
After spending so much time in a sort of pandemic limbo, the wave of relief
washing over us is palpable. But while working on this issue, what is even more
“We all have battles to fight.
And it’s often in those battles
that we are most alive: it’s on
the frontlines of our lives that
we earn wisdom, create joy,
forge friendships, discover
happiness, find love, and do
Eric Greitens, Resilience
remarkable is that there is still so much news to cover, thanks to the incredible
resilience of the hairdressing industry. Because even during worldwide lockdowns,
the hair care industry and salon pros
worldwide persevered through thick and
thin – resulting in new developments,
improved products, fresh-faced brand
ambassadors, new trends and collections.
Even top events like NAHA and ABS will be back on track this year, as brilliant
and inspiring as ever. In this summer and color issue we talk about all this and more.
And we can't wait to continue covering more news and progress, creations and
inspiration as we move forward.
Cover Story
There is no denying that blonde is “the” hair color, not
only during the summer, but year round. The good news
is that new products and techniques put every woman’s
dream to be a blonde at her fingertips, thanks to Goldwell.
With its unsurpassed technologies and highest standards, Goldwell has created a whole new dimension
of lightening opportunities. The latest LightDimensions lineup now offers powerful lifting performance
with an Anti-Yellow-System for the clearest and most even results. And now there are two new powerful
LightDimensions solutions to provide even more customizable lighteninglightening: SilkLift high
performance lighteners with the Anti-Yellow-System for the clearest and most even results, and the
Brightener, for the perfect finish. “I was really excited when I met our model Jada as she was a dark red
brown and lightening her to our Icy Aurora look for the new LightDimensions Collection would be a
beautiful transformation. I used LightDimensions Silk Lift Strong in thin slices in a compacted foiling
technique to create the perfect amount of lift. It is super smooth to apply and the lift was really efficient,”
explained Goldwell International Artist Rebecca Hiele. “After her lifting service, I used the Brightener
Natural with @Cool Pink to her regrowth first, and then to her mid lengths and ends for her Power
Toning. The Brightener and pigment added perfect tonality and incredible shine,” she concludes, and
the results are stunning. As a colorist behind-the-chair, Rebecca also shares, “Power Toning, with
Natural or Silver Brightener, is a service I’m doing in salon consistently. Adding different @Pure
Pigments gives my blondes stunning tonal finishes and the option of a 5-20 minute processing is perfect
for all blonde canvases.”
Short stories
Ever since the first liberating bobs of the 1920s, short hair
styles have become the ultimate fashion-forward option.
Marie Scarano and Gary Kelly
There is no description for long locks that short locks can't fulfill as well or even better! Sexy? ☑ Gorgeous? ☑ Stylish ☑
- not to mention classic or contemporary, quirky or queenly, tame or textured. It looks like these styles are ticking all the
boxes. Whatever the look you're craving, there is a spectacular bob, crop, shag, or pixie cut that is sure to suite you to a T.
GROOVY... UPDATED!
This contemporary look was designed by to capture all the positive vibes of the first post-pandemic America's Beauty Show. A nod to the
shag, but in a luminous, summertime blond. The face-framing, disconnected cut lends movement and livability, and the flirty, point-cut
bangs call attention to the eyes.
TANTALIZING TEXTURES
Stylish volume can often be achieved with a great cut. Why not just give beautifully-shaped curls free rein? Don't
fight mother nature, just go with the flow! Not a curly-girl? Maybe you can opt for a bluntly layered, sideswept bob.
For added oomph, add some volume to the roots for height and run fingers through for a rocker vibe.
DARK LITERATURE
In spite of the name of the collection to which this shot belongs, there's nothing bookish about this
chic yet edgy look for all seasons. Yet there are all the elements of a great novel - black & white, light
& dark, conflict in the lengths, and - most of all - a happy ending! The perfect melding of creatively
innovative cutting and color placement make a stunning fashion statement, minimalist and over the
top at the same time.
REAL CUTS. STRONG SHAPES.
“I love the versatility of short hair! The right cut allows for such diverse styling; from a smooth, sleek
finish to more textured looks like this, which really let you play with movement and create something
very personal. Post-pandemic, whether that's trend-led looks like a modern mullet or something more
commercial and wearable like a layered crop, people are embracing real cuts and stronger shapes again
– which can only be great news for us hairdressers.” Ken Picton
CUTTING EDGE
The beauty of the bob is that it can be clean and classic or... something completely different! “One of the
fiercest versions of a bob. This truly graphic bob plays a huge role, literally balancing on a projected
undercut. The micro slashed, spliced fringe completes the look.” Errol Douglas MBE (UK)
METAMORPHOSIS
“I draw my inspiration from the caterpillar’s transformation into a butterfly. I sought elements that can
be found in nature to create a look that is full of life, and that has movement – just like the wings of a
butterfly – with the same shimmering hues lending numerous facets and reflections. I wanted it to be
daring and extravagant, yet maintaining femininity and keeping the style on-trend. I applied
disconnected, texturized, deep point cut technique to achieve the smooth trendy look. For finishing
touches, I applied Goldwell Dry Texture Spray for easy, free styling and texture.”
QUICK CHANGE-UPS
There is a common misconception that short hair limits a girl's styling options, but WhitneyVerMeer dispels these fears with this pixie
look - a bit extreme with the close shave and fade on the sides but just the right length on top. This androgynous look can be changed
up with a minimum of product and a flick of a comb. Slicked to the side when getting down to business, textured and tousled for a
more casual, easy-going look with eye-brow tickling bangs. What's not to love?
THE PIXIE
Sometimes all you need is dramatic color to bring a casually tousled pixie to life. Natural looking texture is the key to this wash-n-go
beauty, perfect for carefree summer fashion. Add vibrant claret red and style with Goldwell's StyleSign Soft Waver onto damp hair
layered over with StyleSign Diamond Gloss. Dry with a diffuser on medium setting and allow to cool completely. Dress out using your
fingers and style with StyleSign Unlimitor. Easy as pie!
ADDED VALUE
“This image was inspired by the Goldwell Hair Color Style Collection 2021. We believe the haircut is one of the first things
people notice when you make a change, especially in the case of women. Along with the pixie, the bob is one of the most
significant hairstyle trends of late, so if a client is interested in wearing a classic bob, try mixing things up with wavy texture and
a disconnected haircut on the horseshoe section, as it can really bring hair back to life and create some beautiful movement to the
hair while building up the volume at the back.” Peter Wu @ Coloriste Hairstyling & Eason Chen @ EROS Hair Styling (Taiwan)
A BALANCED BOB
“I love a good cut, so I am totally here for short hair in the summer months! The weather is getting
warmer, everyone is happier, it is literally the perfect time to experiment with a shorter cut. Getting nice
movement in the hair is key, as I think short hair has to move. Soft lines next to bold shapes always looks
stunning, almost classic and timeless. I love a good undercut too, it’s perfect to take some weight out for
anyone who has a lot of hair, but also a great way to have some fun with your hair and add a bit of edge.”
A NEW CLASSIC
Soft elements of disconnection enable movement and fluidity to what is a signature Sanrizz classic: a
razor-sharp, new geometric bob. Psychedelic tones of petrol, mahogany, sepia and gold flow through
the hair in a brickwork print. To finalise the look, high polish and texture create drama and strength.”
Never stop learning.
I’m still doing it and will
continue to do so until
the end of my days...
“
”
Raffel Pagès
Icon... Legend
It is with much sadness and regret that we must report
on the sudden passing of our dear friend - a global icon
in the world of international hairdressing, Raffel Pagès.
Sergi Bancells

A wonderful human being, an inspiring artist, an overwhelmingly successful
businessman, Raffel was the founder and director of the chain of salons that bears his
name and which currently has 80 establishments in Spain, employing more than 300
people. The son of a hairdresser, he learned to love hairdressing at the prestigious Carita
in Paris, under the guidance of his mentor and teacher, Rosy Carita. There, his soul as a
hairdresser was formed, theoretically, philosophically and emotionally. Back in Barcelona,
he worked with his father and his brother in the family business before opening his
own salon. In the mid-70s he began to travel throughout Europe, starring in shows,
seminars and ateliers, where he conveyed his passionate understanding for the profession
- something Raffel called “Peluqueria Emocional”- not only carried out with the hands,
but with the senses and emotions. In the Olympic year of Barcelona 92, he inaugurated
his renowned Instituto de Perfeccionamiento, a temple of education where thousands
of hairdressers have been trained and the starting point of the exponential growth of his
firm. In the 90s, Raffel opened salons throughout Spain, in Italy and even in his beloved
Paris. For Raffel, the keys to success were his four I's: Investing, Investigating, Intuiting
and Innovating - in addition to continuing to firmly believe in ongoing training, with the
aim of evolving constantly: “You have to learn throughout your life, I am still learning and
will continue to do so until the end of my days.“ Passionate about art and history, in 1960
he began to collect objects related to hairdressing, founding the most important Museum
of the History of Hairdressing in the world, located in Barcelona and which today exceeds
14,000 pieces. In recent years, Raffel received in London the prestigious Hair Legend
Award from the AIPP during the world famous Alternative Hair Show, while continuing
to dedicate much of his time to growing his Museum and following his chain of salons
together with his two daughters, Carolina and Quionia Pagès. Estetica has followed the
brilliant career of Raffel Pages for more than four decades, since his first successful show
at Cosmoprof 1975, when Estetica's founder Mino Pissimiglia dedicated an article to him
proclaiming him a “new star in hairdressing”. Throughout time, there have been countless
encounters, shared stories, articles ... together with Raffel, with whom we have always
been united in great friendship.
Raffel recently won the prestigious
AIPP Hair Legend Award in London
during the Alternative Hair Show,
while continuing to dedicate much of
his time to the growth of his Museum
and to personally follow his chain of
salons together with his two
daughters, Carolina and Quionia
Pagès. Still today, they continue to
lead the family business, respecting
the values on which it was founded.
COLOUR
In a world where grey is increasingly prevalent, what could ever be better than to add a bit of fun and a splash of colour? Let’s be
dazzled by joy and envelop ourselves in innumerable gradations of every hue, stimulating our imaginations while we go on our
journey through life. Embrace your inner-rainbow and let colour consume you inside and out!

TRIBAL
PALETTE
If you want to explore Tribal then play with colour combos, but be
extreme! Remember that anything goes with anything, so discard the
shackles of convention and break free from preconceived ideas.
When nature inspires the shades of fashion it leaves nothing to chance.
Those with a love of flowers will tell you that 'anything goes with green',
but in the natural world there's never really a clash of colours, is there?
Setting
new sites...
One thing we have learned from the pandemic is the
overwhelming importance of digital tools and media for
keeping in touch... and Estetica is on the job!
It’s hard to know where to begin when it comes to talking about sectors hit extraordinarily hard by
lockdowns during the Covid-19 pandemic. Among these is, of course, the hairdressing sector. But it is also
true that hairdressing was one of the sectors that succeeded in responding to such setbacks brilliantly,
continuing to work, train, communicate, and post on Zoom, Facebook, Instagram, websites and more...
exploiting the power of the internet to the fullest. And through it all, the Estetica Network was on the job as
well, reaching a vast professional hairdressing audience – hairstylists obviously, but also distributors,
manufacturing companies, trainers and educators. keeping the entire globe connected via 20 specialized
national portals in local languages - from the United States to Brazil to China and Indonesia, reaching
across major European nations - with corresponding pages on Facebook, Instagram, and hundreds of
thousands of professionals who follow our publications from every corner of the globe. And just as we
strive to keep the stunning formats and graphics of our hard copy interesting, fresh, and updated, we
decided to update our website as well, with a spiffy three-in-one USA-UK-WORLD portal, brimming with
global coverage of the hairdressing universe at your fingertips - for English speakers worldwide!

NEW HORIZONS
Estetica magazine is sought out by salon professionals worldwide for its spectacular imagery and
coverage of trends, people, events and more, providing both information and inspiration. But today we
are extending our mission to keep our professional readers up to date on everything that is happening
in the world of coiffure in an even more professional and timely context. Advertising & P.R. Manager
Nives Carena says, “Our priority has always been and continues to be to provide a digital portal and
forum for our partners that is on the same par as our beautiful magazine, a platform where they can be
honored and proud to reach their audience.” The Estetica Network team was determined to embark on
a restyling of the website that would flaunt a more contemporary appeal for an even wider audience,
but also be more functional and easier to navigate. The USA-UK-World is the perfect trifecta, enabling
vistors to give their curiosity free rein and engage on more levels, expanding their horizons and
opening up more possibilities for news, education, and - most importantly - inspiration.
Come see and explore at www.esteticamagazine.com!
Stars light,
stars bright...
It’s complicated... product development, usage, tools, retail,
cutting-coloring-styling techniques, business, marketing, and
social. What’s a brand to do? Get the brightest stars in the
hairdressing firmament to convey the message & mission.
Anyone in the hairdressing business knows that there is much more to it than just producing quality
products and getting them to hairdressers in their salons. Today’s hairdressers are obviously required to
know their trade: cutting, coloring, styling... and so much more! Even before the pandemic and all its
inherent organizational and health concerns, the salon owner who wants to be a successful business
owner must also have a basic understanding of salon design, accounting, retail techniques, staff training,
social media and marketing strategies, and even sustainability (to meet the demands of an increasingly
selective and savvy clientele).
So the brands decided to go to the proverbial “horse’s mouth” - the hairdressers themselves. Not just your
run-of-the-mill salon pros, but those who have actually been through the mill, with extraordinary skills
behind the chair, years of experience, visionary creativity, and an outstanding knack for communication.
The Brand Ambassador or Creative Artist is the buffer between the brand and the hairdresser - a dreamy
job that puts them on the cutting edge of product development and often as trendsetters. Their main role
usually revolves around education - a guiding light - teaching hairdressers both online and off about the
potential of new products and tools, new techniques, the latest trends, sharing know-how and experience
with expertise, passion, and conviction.
Andis
Chatchawan - aka John (left) -
Phuatanyawongvelendis - owner
of The White Box Salon and
Barbershop in Thailand, believes
strongly in the power of Andis
education and holds workshops
throughout the country to help
set up the next generation of
barbers for success. Hayden
Cassidy (right) arrived in London
via Dublin and Berlin, with a
barbering style influenced by
hairdressing fused with sharp
edges and fading, constantly
pushing creative boundaries.
“Andis allows you to be yourself
and celebrate your uniqueness
and authenticity," says Hayden.

Paula is a people-person, whether
she’s behind the chair, on social
Kristi Faulkner
Being a female barber in a male
dominated industry was initially
an enormous challenge, for Kristi,
but she shares, “30 years ago.
I started with my Wahl Peanut
and my Designer and have been
loyal ever since. To know I have
changed one person’s perspective
about using clippers,is what
makes me so excited. Diversity
in the industry is priceless and I
strive to leave a mark of seeing
no skin color... only texture.”
Joanne Rempel
Eufora Color Development
Manager and salon owner truly
mentors her stylists. Indeed,
many of the color looks Eufora
shares come from Joanne's
Salon - Colors Beauty and
Wellness - are rarely her own
work. She constantly encourages
and promotes her team members.
For many, Joanne is the ultimate
embodiment of Eufora's values
and mission.
Amy McManus
This spring Amy became a Wella
Professionals Brand Ambassador,
as a balayage specialist after
overcoming several career
challenges. “Discovering
balayage brought me back to life
and in love with doing hair again.
I was proud of my triumphs when
they’d happen and spent so much
time obsessing over my failures.
It was truly career changing
for me.” Now Amy hopes to
reignite this same joy in other
hairdressers around the world.
Sure, hairdressing is perhaps a trade first and also a business. But the culture behind it reaches so much further
into our past, into the very dawning of humanity and the act of preening, not only of ourselves but also of
those closest to us. Hairdressers are a caring lot, perhaps listeners above all - always working on taking their
consultation skills to the next level. And the best and brightest among them are destined to become teachers
and mentors as well, passing on important skills and tradition, having assimilated the very history and culture
of this trade and intent on instilling the same in generations to come.
Hayden Cassidy, Barber & Andis Global Educator summed it all up when she said, “I think the pandemic has
made us all realise not only the importance of the industry connections with one and other but also how much
we need each other for support and guidance, whatever level we are at. Around the world, I’ve heard of barbers
and stylists everywhere coming together to help each other get through these times and it's incredible to see.
It’s made me realize how incredibly grateful I am to be in this industry and I don't think anybody will ever take
what we do for granted again.”
This article was originally intended as a round-up of brief bios and profiles of some of the greatest artists in
the business... but we were only able to scratch the surface on the wisdom and life lessons they had to share
with us. So it looks like we will be doing a series of article on line on our newly designed website at
esteticamagazine.com, where readers will be able to find our more about those introduced here and others.
Getting the
green light
Taking a sustainable approach to your salon business
can optimise efficiency, boost your bottom line, and
appeal to a new category of eco-aware consumers.
Things are finally getting back to normal and salon owners worldwide have had plenty of time during
lockdowns to catch up on education, honing both behind-the-chair skills and business acumen. In order to
help guarantee the success of your salon business today, it’s important to take into consideration reducing
overhead costs as well as attracting and ensuring the loyalty of health-conscious customers seeking safer
and botanical products as well as best-business practices that are good for the planet.
Anna Peters (below), of the Sam Villa ArTeam, and owner, re:TREAT Color + Hair Design Studio in
Clovis, California , installed ECOHEADS shampoo nozzles. “They enhance the shampoo experience at
the bowl with cleaner filtered water, they reduce frizz with tourmaline stones that put negative ions into
the hair, and cut down blow dry time. They also offer double the pressure while conserving up to 65% of
water and energy.” A win for the salon owner, the customers, and the planet alike.
For forty years, JPMS has valued doing good for people, animals and the planet, and is devoted to
making operations cleaner and greener. In addition to sustainable formulas, Paul Mitchell® Clean Beauty
(above) is a new line handcrafted with the highest level of natural origin ingredients, organic, ethically
sourced botanicals and innovative bio-based plastic packaging.
R+Co BLEU (below) features 100% recyclable packaging. Bottles and jars are made of 100% postconsumer
recycled material, which use 88% less energy to produce, further lowering the carbon footprint.
Tubes are constructed from bioresin sugar cane plastic, which biodegrades in 180 days in soil and 60 days
in compost. Canisters are crafted from 100% aluminum, a recyclable resource. Cartons and secondary
packaging are developed from 100% post-consumer recycled paper sourced from Forest Stewardship
Council (FSC)-certified farms and feature soy-based inks. R+Co products are also 100%, gluten and
cruelty-free, made without sulfates, parabens, petrolatum or minterl oil, and are Leaping Bunny certified.

KAO demonstrates its commitment to the sustainability of the planet with the launch of KMS Shampoo Bars (left) made with natural ingredients. These bars
offer a variety of important advantages for the environment: they save water during product development, reduce plastic and packing materials, and lessen
CO2 emissions, while meeting the specific needs of your clients' hair. Standing apart from typical salon hair care products available today that make clean
beauty claims, when it comes to ALOE VERA, Eufora products (center) utilize the best beauty secret nature has to offer in USDA Certified Organic Aloe,
which helps rebalance dry skin, soothe the scalp, and provides powerful anti-oxidant properties. With Rahua Sustainability Sets, customers can now use their
favorite Rahua products, hold onto their bottle, and refill their bottle with ease. These sustainable, eco-conscious, refill pouches enable Rahua customers
to refill their favorite full-size bottles and reduce plastic usage by 90% as well as their own individual carbon footprint, ultimately benefiting the planet.
Moreover, Rahua's concentrated plant-powered formulations require the use of less product and provide long-term healthy hair, scalp and skin benefits.
In addition to designing and organizing a salon based on the principles of sustainability, it is increasingly important to stock
your salon with the natural and botanical products your clients crave, both for in-salon and at-home use, produced by brands
that have made a commitment to social responsibility. For example, Aveda, the high-performance, plant-powered hair care
brand with a mission to care for the world, donated $5 from the sale of each limited-edition, silicone-free, sulfate cleanser
free, cruelty-free and vegan Shampure Nurturing Shampoo Bar Shampure to charity: water. For more info about Aveda’s
commitment to the planet, visit aveda.com. Pravana, a leading professional hair color and care brand, announced that it is
certified animal test-free and has joined PETA’s Beauty without Bunnies program. Pravana’s philosophy has always gone
beyond traditional product creation by redefining hair color and care with a caring commitment towards others. This official
certification for the entire brand portfolio is a badge worn with pride to honor that commitment and uphold the brand legacy.
Other spa and beauty treatments also need to meet the needs of a more
sophisticated clientele. Malynda Vigliotti (aka Boom Boom) opened the first
walk-in brow bar in NYC in 2008, surviving the pandemic and celebrating 13 years
strong by becoming the first Vegan and Cruelty Free brow bar in the city! As a
female small business owner diagnosed with Graves’ and Thyroid Eye Disease, she
developed a line of clean brow products, proudly formulated in the USA without all
the "bad stuff ", because our eyes are so important and clean beauty is the future.
Top UK hairdresser and Denman
Brand Ambassador Brandon
Messinger gives his advice on a top
class finish to your work.
A strong
finish
E
For optimal
finishing, take into
consideration the
hair type and adapt
the size of the brush
and the bristles to
the styling effect
you want to achieve.
very great haircut is a
combination of key elements;
prepping the hair, a technical
haircut, a creative blow-dry
and a detailed finish. Way too
many hairdressers only focus
on one or two areas and
therefore their work never reaches
its true potential. Too often it’s the
finishing that’s neglected, but if you
really want to be a true hair
professional, you’ve got to spend
time finishing your work.
BRANDON’S TIPS
FOR FINISHING
A medium or large sized natural
bristle brush is a must for smoothing
and adding shine; especially
up-styles. The thick bristles of the
D82 (I use a larger version) gently
controls and smooths those ultrafine
hairs without disturbing any
internal work for a clean finish with
soft natural shine. If you’re going for
a loose, soft natural look then you
need to brush through with the D81.
This brush has a combination of
longer nylon pins and natural bristle
so the brush penetrates the hair to
loosen while smoothing and adding
shine to the exterior – all without
ruining your blow-dry or prep work
If you like to do a lot of photographic
or session work then you’ll likely
work with wigs and extensions and
finishing these can be a bit tricky.
For these types of styles – or
particularly fine hair – I use my wide
spaced D80 nylon pin brush. It
doesn’t catch on hairpins or
extension bonds, but will still give
control to shape and define the look.
Trust me, if you’re really serious
about your work, you’ve got to spend
time on your finishing. With these
three brushes and a little Mistify Me
light hairspray, I can get the perfect
finish on any look salon or editorial.
