TAX SEASON 2021 IS HERE!
What Do I Need to Know?
We have covered the who, what, when, where, why and how of personal
income tax, just one of the ways that we make tax season easy for you.
Most salaried taxpayers will have an amount of tax (called
PAYE) deducted from their salary monthly and paid across
to SARS by their employer. When tax season rolls around
each year, SARS reconciles the amount of tax that has been
deducted by your employer to the tax that you should have
paid based on the tax return you submit. If too much tax
was deducted by your employer, SARS will refund you but
likewise, if not enough tax has been paid, SARS will require
you to pay in the difference.
One of the first questions that crosses most people’s mind
is, do I need to submit a tax return? The answer to this
question can be complex but the following list of questions
serve as a great starting point to finding out if you need to
submit a tax return to SARS or not:
1. Was your gross salary for the tax year more than
R500 000?
2. If you earned less than R500 000, was your income
received from more than one employer?
3. Did you receive a car/travel allowance or have use
of a company vehicle?
4. Do you have any other income (business income,
rental income, interest) or did you make any capital
gains or losses in the year?
5. Are you claiming any deductions for medical
expenses, retirement annuity contributions?
6. Do you have any foreign assets or foreign currency
exceeding R225 000?
If your answer to ANY of the above questions is YES, then
you will need to submit a tax return. This can be done
either electronically through the SARS efiling website or
you can make an appointment at a SARS branch. The tax
filing season will open on 01 July and returns need to be
submitted on or before 23 November 2021 – unless you are
a provisional taxpayer in which case you have until
31 January 2022 to submit.
Should you be required to submit a return, below is a
list of supporting documents that is often requested
by SARS to accompany the return and needs to be
submitted in order for you to receive your refund:
• IRP5 certificate from your employer.
• Medical aid contribution certificates.
• Retirement annuity certificates.
• Interest (IT3(b)) and investment certificates.
• Travel logbook if you received a travel/car allowance.
• Schedule of rental income and property expenses if you
own an investment property.
• Financial statements for any business income.
