at Martha’s Vineyard 

Construction Company. 

Recently, Colin Whyte, founder of 

Martha’s Vineyard Construction 

Company, stepped down as president, 

leaving his daughters, Hilary Moore 

and Alison Thompson in charge of 

the construction firm. Both Moore 

and Thompson have been involved 

in the company for several years, 

working with their special group of 

employees on an array of unique 

residential projects. 

Joining the company five years ago 

as the office manager, Hilary Moore 

discovered her passion for the family 

business. “I realized I had the skillset 

and assets to take this and run,” 

says Moore, now president of the 

firm. “And I wanted to continue my 

father’s success.” 

As construction is booming on Martha’s 

Vineyard, Moore and Whyte have 

experienced substantial growth. In 

response to the continued success of 

the past few years, the duo has plans 

in the works to launch a property 

management arm of the firm which will 

cater to the needs of their clients. 

Whyte is still involved doing consulting 

and working with longstanding clients. 

“I’m available as much as they need 

me,” he says. “I never planned for my 

daughters to someday take over the 

business so it’s a wonderful feeling.”

Good Things Ahead 

At long last, the world is opening up again. Here on Cape Cod, we’re 

grateful to be getting back in the swing of things, visiting the restaurants, 

local businesses, shops, and showrooms that set us apart. People are out 

and about enjoying this idyllic enclave that many of us are lucky to call 

home, and commerce here is booming once again. We’re entertaining, 

welcoming guests for the season; indulging in all the activities we had to 

postpone over the past year. Life is good. 

This issue celebrates exceptional design on Cape Cod and The Islands by 

shining the spotlight on a slew of glorious coastal residences designed for 

casual get-togethers and family time, places that serve as retreats from the 

frenetic pace of busy lives. 

The first sprawling seasonal homes built on Cape Cod during the late 

1800s were built with numerous bedrooms to accommodate family 

members and friends and entertaining was an all-day (and all night) affair. 

For the most part, more than a century later, that hasn’t changed. The 

homes on the following pages are designed according to the notion 

“the more the merrier” and are replete with spacious bunkrooms, ample 

open entertaining spaces, and outdoor rooms that lend themselves to 

countless scenarios. 

Take your time with this issue, stretch out in the sun and enjoy the homes 

on display. There truly is no better place to unwind than our special

Situated on a verdant stretch of lawn overlooking 

the harbor, this expansive Mattapoisett retreat 

started out as a potential teardown. Yet the 

current homeowners, who live year-round in 

Texas, saw that it was possible to preserve the integrity 

and footprint of the original two-bedroom structure 

while reconfiguring the floor plan and adding essential 

square footage. 

The husband grew up summering in Mattapoisset, and 

together with his wife, decided their growing family 

would relish a haven in the area. To mold the home to 

suit their needs, the couple consulted Will Saltonstall 

of Saltonstall Architects even before their offer had 

been accepted. 

“Architecturally, one of our goals was to take best advantage 

of the site,” says Saltonstall. “The house is on 

an incredible spot on the water, and we wanted to create 

a thoughtful design to capitalize on that.” 

Preserving the original house and its historical connection 

to the neighborhood was important to the owners. 

The original single-story, two-bedroom house contained 

small rooms off a long interior hallway and neglected the 

property’s impressive water view. Redesigning the layout 

of the house required an extensive amount of work but 

the emerging possibilities outweighed the option to tear 

it down and start fresh. “The homeowners wanted to 

preserve the house and they were willing to invest what 

it took to keep that integrity,” says Tim Costello, owner 

of Costello Fine Homes, the lead builder for this project.

A kitchen island topped with Statuario Calacatta stone with a blue-green

the ceiling height is lower, which creates an intimate setting; the European

Working closely together with their teams and the owners, 

Saltonstall and Costello entirely transformed the home’s 

structure without extending its footprint, creating a 

spacious and elegant home that maintains its traditional 

roots and proper scale. 

From the front, the house is modest, existing in harmony 

with the landscape and surrounding homes. Blue shutters 

compliment the shingled exterior, and a circular driveway 

grants the homeowners a glimpse of the water as they 

pull into the property. New blue garage doors, designed 

by Designer Garage Doors, feature square overlays and 

window muntins that match the home’s new windows. 

Inside, the expansive, open rooms are designed to 

accommodate large family gatherings. Each room flows 

into the next and enjoys plenty of natural light from the 

many large windows, most with water views that draw 

in the outside environment. Inspired by the coastal 

environment surrounding them, the owners used texture

and color to bring to mind the sand, seagrasses and 

shells, using beautiful natural tones, blues, and greens 

throughout the interior decoration. 

Importantly, the home is not all open and bright, but also 

features smaller rooms, decorated with warmer tones and 

fabrics, where family members can retreat should they 

seek privacy or a cozier space. A sitting area on the first 

floor between the main family living area and the master 

bedroom is one such secluded room that the homeowners 

particularly enjoy. Inviting green velvet couches, a 

television, and built-in bar with a water view makes this 

niche a relaxing place to unwind. 

Creating flexible sleeping arrangements was also 

important to the homeowners according to Saltonstall. 

With several adult children, the homeowners hope to 

easily host family members and guests. A bunk room 

with six built-in beds provides ample sleeping space for 

grandchildren.

Special details throughout the home elevate the 

aesthetic. In the kitchen, a herringbone floor pattern 

in custom finished European white oak by Mac Davis 

Flooring takes the place of a rug and provides a contrast 

to the rest of the kitchen floor pattern. An island 

topped with Statuario Calacatta stone is adjacent to a 

comfortable sitting area overlooking the water. A wet 

bar off the kitchen features a ceiling in a blue and gray 

crystal patterned wallpaper by Cowtan & Tout, adding 

interest to the space. Finally, the homeowners relied 

on Surroundings for all their window treatments and 

floor coverings; working together to create unique and 

complimentary spaces in each room. 

Costello and his team did all of the carpentry on-site and 

currently have plans to return to the site this spring to 

manage further enhancements to the backyard including 

an outbuilding. The homeowners hired Saltonstall 

and Bartlett Gardens to design a tea house and patio 

and expand the gardens to take full advantage of the 

sprawling waterfront lawn. 


Multiple built-in bunks were designed so the 

homeowner’s adult children and grandchildren 

always have a cozy spot to sleep.

The project was completed in less than a year, finishing on 

time even amidst a global pandemic. While most design 

and construction decisions were made in advance, there 

were several decisions made on-site as a result of the 

collaboration of the team members and their ability to 

listen to one another. “There were a couple of situations 

where suggestions were made by the different team 

members that yielded better results,” says Saltonstall. 

“Successful collaboration comes through listening and 

working together, instead of being too proud.” 

Being in constant communication made it easier when the 

team had to adjust quickly and contributed to the overall 

success of the project. The homeowners were responsive 

and able to make timely decisions that kept the project 

on schedule. “Seeing the homeowners’ faces was the best 

takeaway for me,” says Costello. “To see how thrilled and 

emotional they were was by far the biggest success.”

Previously called Joseph Olson Interiors, husband and 

husband interior design duo Joseph Olson and Clay 

Twombly recently combined forces officially, rebranding 

their company and creating Olson Twombly Interior Design. 

Twombly joined Olson’s firm three years ago, working as his 

business partner with Olson maintaining the role of principal 

designer. Even though they were working together to run 

the business, the company’s name didn’t reflect that, so 

the decision to update felt like a natural progression. 

Now that both names are on the door, the pair are 

broadening their reach, with a current office on Nantucket 

and a Connecticut office that recently opened in 

December, with plans to open a new office on Nantucket 

in June. Describing the Nantucket community as a family 

to them, they are pleased with the positive responses 

they’ve received since changing their brand name and are 

excited for what lies ahead. “Joining together officially 

has allowed both of us to think a little bigger and broader 

about where we want to go design-wise personally, 

professionally, and creatively,” says Twombly. 

Expanding to their new location in Connecticut has 

allowed the pair to conveniently serve clients in other 

cities and better showcase their designs. “Moving off the 

island has allowed us to expand our inspiration,” says 

Olson. “We’re now more exposed to New York and Boston 

design and that’s important for us to evolve.” 

Having their lifestyles so closely intertwined with their 

company leads to an overflow of creativity. With clients in 

Colorado, California, and northern cities, the inspiration 

they are able to share is boundless.

Moving On Up 

An expansive harborfront 

residence gets a revamped 

roofline that accommodates 

more opportunities to take 

in the view.

With copper gutters, extensive trim details, and an 

abundance of custom elements, this renovated home 

in Harwich Port is full of nautical charm. Yet the current 

owners felt that the original Cape design did not capitalize 

on the second-floor square-footage or take advantage of 

the home’s incredible harbor view. A renovation was done 

to improve the home’s floor plan and maximize its view 

of the water while ensuring the home still fit within the 

context of the neighborhood in Harwich Port. 

Removing the roof off of the second floor and creating 

a gambrel roof structure transformed the home by 

extending the ceilings and walls, allowing more sunlight 

in. “We were forced to look down at the ground from the 

second floor because of how short the walls were,” says 

Rob McPhee, president of McPhee Associates of Cape 

Cod, who was the builder for this project. “By making the 

roof and walls taller we let in more daylight to showcase 

their beautiful views.” 

Adding character to the home in the form of unique 

custom elements was another priority. The outdoor shower 

reflects elements of Cape Cod with carved wood shingles 

that emulate a tuna fish and an oval-shaped window in 

the bar area gives the illusion of a porthole on a ship. 

Extensive trim details on the exterior resemble a stately

Replete with an outdoor kitchen, the new patio is an idyllic spot to 

observe the activity on the harbor.

ceilings in the living room add another historic touch. 

Reconfiguring the floor plan to create various vantage 

points give each room an exclusive vista and captures 

more of the water. “Framing different views through the 

windows out to the harbor and the Nantucket Sound 

highlights different views in different areas,” says Patrick 

McDonough, senior project manager for John Toates 

Architecture and Design and lead architect for this project. 

“A bedroom upstairs has a great reading niche with a large 

window that captures a view of the harbor and dock.” 

Cape Cod Marble & Granite created a white waterfall 

edge island counter for the airy, light-filled, kitchen. A 

painted white brick wall behind the cooktop and a custom 

latch window above the sink opens out to the patio, 

offering a view out to the harbor. The homeowners, who 

wanted a local manufacturer to craft and install the home’s 

interior and exterior shutters, tapped Karl Ivester of New 

England Shutter Mills to do the job. 

The kitchen, living room, and dining room connect and 

flow visually without an open floor plan, maintaining the 

home’s historic feel. “There’s a sense that the walls kind of 

dissolve, but it’s still a traditional spatial design,” says John 

Toates, owner and principal of John Toates Architecture 

and Design. 

Creating guest quarters above the garage with a bedroom 

and bathroom was also part of the renovation, 

along with adding a patio and outdoor kitchen. “Bringing 

the vision our clients had to life and seeing the transformation 

from the old to the new was an incredible 

process,” says McPhee.

Playful flourishes, a serene palette, and plenty of 

ocean views give this home a lovely, laid-back appeal. 

Panoramic views of the harbor, a staircase with cut-out abstract lighthouses, and tucked away nooks in turrets 

overlooking the ocean make this waterfront property a unique work of art. This custom home designed 

and built by Polhemus Savery DaSilva Architects Builders (PSD) was the firm’s fourth collaboration with the 

homeowners, Bill and Bonnie Daggett. Capturing the magnificent ocean views and creating a comfortable 

haven was a top priority for the couple, who had downsized from a much larger home. 

“The connection to both the land and the waterside was really important,” says Aaron Polhemus, owner & CEO of 

PSD. “From the waterside, there’s a significant number of windows and that was intentionally done to ensure the 

home was closely connected visually to the water.” 


From the front, the home is welcoming and warm. There are fewer 

windows, and the construction is more traditional, so it blends in well 

with the town and village beyond. The interior is clean and bright, 

with an open floor plan and neutral colors that don’t distract from the 

water view. Whimsical touches are carefully incorporated throughout: 

a seal sculpture by Tim Dibble, named Mr. Dibble is located in the 

backyard, a custom David Witbeck painting illustrating playful sea 

creatures hangs in the living room, and the staircase features cutouts 

of abstract lighthouses. 

“A lot of our clients prefer more restrained railing designs, so we 

don’t get to do something like this staircase often,” says Sharon 

DaSilva, senior designer at PSD and lead architect for the design 

of this project. “I love the way the light shines through the cutouts, 

creating beautiful patterns on the floor and walls.” 

Intimate additions throughout the home include a breakfast area 

in the kitchen overlooking the water, designed by Classic Kitchens 

& Interiors, a seating area nestled in an alcove in the living room 

drenched in natural light and built-in bookcases on either side of the 

fireplace. An inviting den on the second floor off the master bedroom 

is another little nook where the homeowners can unwind.

“The den has a fireplace, recliners, and built-in bookcases to make the 

space cozy,” says Bonnie Daggett. “It’s where we sit down at night to 

watch a movie and it’s our favorite place to relax.” 

The Daggetts were after a different feeling for this home and wanted 

something opposite from their previous home, which incorporated 

lots of colors and patterns, says Denise Maurer, owner of Denise 

Maurer Interiors, who designed the interior so that the couple could 

take advantage of spaces where the view is most prevalent. Maurer 

furnished the home with a scaled-down approach to accessorizing, 

keeping the interior simple and uncluttered. 

“They wanted more of a neutral color palette and casual environment,” 

says Maurer. “When they get to their second home on the Cape they 

want to relax and rejuvenate.” 

Working with the Daggetts on previous projects established a level of 

trust between the homeowner and integrated architecture and construction 

firm that led to stronger creativity and cooperation throughout 

the entire process. “It’s very special to work with clients over multiple 

projects because we get to know each other better and it makes 

the collaboration more effective,” says Polhemus. Effective, indeed.

Architect Nicholas Stanos and his team create 

impressive graphite drawings to illustrate the mood and 

character of spaces his firm designs for their clients. 

“The drawings become a vehicle for representing not 

only our design intent but also bring form to what the 

clients are imagining,” says Stanos, whose architecture 

firm Nicholas Stanos Architect, is located in New York 

City with a new outpost in Osterville. “The drawings 

enable our clients to discover and embrace what the 

new place is going to be like before it’s built.” 

Stanos opened the Osterville location last fall after he 

and his family temporarily relocated due to COVID to 

West Yarmouth where his wife Valerie grew up. Nicholas 

recognized that his firm was quite effective working 

remotely during the pandemic, which motivated him 

to seize the opportunity to expand his firm’s reach 

along the East Coast by establishing a permanent 

office on Cape Cod. The firm specializes in custom 

luxury residential design with a focus on interpreting 

the regional architectural styles and contexts unique 

to each project’s location, in a range of traditional to 

modern ways. Stanos’s firm is already exploring the 

natural beauty and regional architectural style in new 

commissions on Nantucket and Chatham. 

Striking collaborations with other creative-minded individuals 

is of interest to Stanos, who sees his Osterville 

studio as an opportunity to feature the work of other 

designers, artisans, and artists. This summer, an exhibit 

of New York photographer Steve Pool’s portrait-like 

photographs of flowers and vegetables will showcase in 

an exhibit at the studio, the first of many to come.

T“The homeowners have a very big, very boisterous family,” says Leslie Schneeberger, an 

associate principal with SV Design, Siemasko + Verbridge, who designed this seasonal 

retreat in Chatham. “They have five sons and when we started the project a few years 

ago, they ranged in age from elementary school to just graduating from college.” 

The kids factored very much into the design of the new home, as did the homeowners’ 

extended family, who visit often. “It’s a very big, very multi-generational family,” says 

Schneeberger. “The house needed spaces to accommodate grandparents as well as 

young kids.” 

The property overlooks an estuary that spills out into the ocean and a vast lawn runs 

between the house and the water. “The homeowners wanted to embrace and preserve 

the lawn. It has a lovely, old Cape Cod feel to it,” says Schneeberger. “These days there 

is a trend of people wanting to build homes as close to the ocean as the Conservation 

Commission will allow. But there’s something so nice about sitting on the home’s 

porches and looking out over the green lawn and to the water beyond.”

The house has a Y-shape, which allowed for the front lawn 

to be kept intact and for the creation of a large yard in 

the back which accommodates an expansive pool area. 

Porches and decks run along both the first and second 

levels of the house. “The husband wanted to make sure 

that his second-floor office accessed the porch so he could 

take his calls outside,” says Schneeberger. 

Landscape architecture firm, Jenick Studio collaborated 

with SV Design to discern the style and personality of 

the home’s outdoor spaces. An outdoor kitchen is on the 

pool deck and a firepit is located off of the lower-level 

game room. “We kept the plantings around the house 

pretty simple because the owners didn’t want to do a lot 

of maintenance or take away from the water view,” says 

associate landscape architect, Angela Tanner. Flowering 

trees bring color to the landscape along with hydrangeas, 

and roses while ferns were used to create a sheltered nook 

by the firepit and a thicket of native evergreens provide 

privacy screening between the home and the next door 

neighbor’s house. 

With five bedrooms and a space above the garage, there 

are ample sleeping quarters to accommodate the steady 

stream of family members. On the main level, there are 

several different ways to circulate through and in and out 

the house to the pool and lawn. “With so many people 

using the house, we wanted to make sure there was an 

open flow through every space,” says Schneeberger. 

There are lots of doors and windows to ensure a seamless 

integration between indoors and out. The SV Design team 

also worked on cultivating the interior design. A calming 

color palate throughout takes cues from the setting;

cedar shingles as a nod to the classic coastal cottage vernacular. 

hues recall sand, stone, and the ocean. Different ceiling 

treatments are used to add texture and define spaces: 

in the kitchen and family room exposed beams evoke 

an open, more casual and beachy appeal. In the more 

formal dining room, there is cove lighting inset into the 

ceiling, while the formal living room has a traditional 

coffered ceiling. 

“On the outside, the house is a classic Shingle Style, but 

there are modern touches inside,” says Ryan Newton, 

vice president of C.H. Newton Builders. The crowning 

element of the home is the circular widow’s walk at its 

apex, accessible by a stairway clad with Sapele mahogany 

that evokes a ship’s ladder. “The views from up there are 

spectacular,” says Newton, adding that the home was 

completed on a tight timeline. “We were able to finish the 

house in time because of the great team fit we have with 

SV Design.” 

Schneeberger echoes the sentiment and says the house 

has been enjoyed by the family for two seasons so far. 

“They love the pool and play lots of lawn games. The 

house really has a summer feel, it’s a wonderful place 

to be.”

BOSTON STONE RESTORATION’S PROCESS FOR PROTECTION. 

COUNTER CULTURE 

Boston Stone Restoration offers More AntiEtch coating for 

natural soft stones to create a protective barrier against 

etching and staining without altering the stone’s finish. 

The durable, micro-thin layer is applied as a liquid and 

is cured with a UV light before being polished. With a 

10-year warranty, this process can be applied on marble, 

limestone, onyx, travertine, and soapstone. 

“We have a lot of customers who choose this process on 

a new installation before the product gets used and that’s 

the best time to do it,” says Melissa Bunis, co-owner of
