ROCK ‘N GROW® ‘Back in Black’ Sedum
TM
Letter from Hans
About the New Introductions for 2021-2022
We are extremely excited about the new plant varietal selections for
the 2021-2022 catalog. Many cutting edge and exciting plants are on
their way from New Plant Development. Over 10 years in the making,
Sedum ROCK ‘N GROW® ‘Back in Black’ represents the culmination
of an upright, non-lodging habit, wide weatherproof leaves, dark, near
black foliage, and lovely red flowers. This spectacular sedum adds
drama all season long, well into the fall and is great for attracting
pollinators.
After over 10 years developing Hostas we have a number of wonderful
additions. From the intense powdery blue ‘Tears in Heaven’, to the
extremely ruffled ‘Dancing with Dragons’ and the majestic, large,
‘Wind Beneath My Wings’ there are blue Hostas for everyone. Our
trademark ruffles are well represented with ‘Hope Springs Eternal’,
‘Party Streamers’ and ‘Time in a Bottle’, and for sheer size don’t miss
‘Drop Dead Gorgeous’, ‘Terms of Endearment’ (our non-burning ‘Frances
Williams’ upgrade) and ‘Miss America’. This is only a sneak preview,
more exciting hostas are still in the pipeline.
The two new Hibiscus from our breeding program are top notch. The
compact SUMMERIFIC® ‘Edge of Night’ is petite enough to be used
in the mid-section to front of the border, and the near black foliage
is attractive long before the flowers come into play. ‘Inner Glow’ is a
breeding break for Hardy Hibiscus with the lavender halo in the center
of the pink petals.
Three AMAZING DAISIES® Leucanthemum enter the market. Spider-like
‘Spun Silk’ is our tallest Shasta introduction to date, ‘Marshmallow’ a
lovely double with 31/2” flowers on strong stems, and last but not least
is ‘Banana Cream II’, with everything you expect from ‘Banana Cream’
but with higher bud count and more flowers, earlier bloom, and less
vernalization requirements for growers, making it truly an Amazing Daisy.
Hans Hansen, Director of New Plant Development
‘Violet Cascade’ is our darkest cascading Buddleia and a butterfly
magnet, with violet purple flowers similar to a Bridal Veil Spirea. Also of
merit is it has not set seed in 4 years of monitoring for seed production.
And last but not least, we are Mad About Mangave®, and continue to
push the envelope with new and crazy forms and habits of our favorite
succulents. ‘Jabber Jaws’ has folded boat-shaped leaves with soft, nonbiting
teeth, ‘Dreadlocks’ has a profusion of rippled, dark spotted foliage,
and ‘Maverick’ is the ultimate in cool with its flat leaf presentation
and saturation of crimson spots. If you haven’t tried Mangave they
are excellent container plants and collectable among today’s plant
instagramers.
Landscape Trials Container Trials Production Trials
New Plant Development
Our customers look to us for our exceptional genetics which have proven themselves over the
years, from our distinctive hostas to our fabulous hardy Hibiscus and many others. The top
exclusive genetics from our own hybridizing program and hybridizers worldwide are trialed and
selected for the Proven Winners® line.
Plants in selection first undergo Landscape Trials where they are evaluated against similar new
plant selections and industry standards. Varieties that excel in this category are then moved to
Container Trials for further evaluation and on to Production Trials. At each stage we are looking
for plants that distinguish themselves against other offerings and will benefit our customers and
end consumers.
The New Plant Development Department at Walters Gardens works with aproximately 80 different
genera of plants, amassing more than 500 plant introductions to date. In addition to our own work,
we are constantly evaluating the work of outside breeders for inclusion as well.
Bush vs. Vining Clematis
Unlike their vining cousins, Bush Clematis are
completely herbaceous and die back to the ground
each year. While they do require some support, they
will not vine within a trellis or grow to the height of
traditional Vining Clematis. Growers who do choose
to grow Bush Clematis will be rewarded with a
longer season of bloom and easier to grow plants.
BUDVC30, BUDVC72 (Butterfly Bush) ‘Violet Cascade’ has the same cascading habit as the other members of the series, but with deep purple, cascading flowers.
staking, cages, or neighboring plants for support. All propagation prohibited. Proven Winners® label and container required.
seed around.
