"Jennie was our fifth real estate agent in our crazy search for a home. She had so many great reviews, we hoped

she would come through for us. And she did!! She was the best by far. So knowledgeable, very connected, and she

got stuff DONE. She and her team were very hands-on and proactive and there was never any doubt that she could

handle whatever weird situation was thrown at us. I am so grateful we found her; I think we would still be searching

otherwise. Thank you Jennie and team!" - The Davis Family

MR-2027

ABOUT THE CITY

A place to thrive

By Rachel Kelly

ABOUT THE COVER

Our 2021-2022 cover photo, taken by Nate

Graves of In-Gear Media high above Gig

Harbor, zeroes in on this beautiful boat dock,

between the Gig Harbor Marina & Boatyard

and the Maritime Pier, where the boats are

nestled in awaiting the day’s adventure!

ig Harbor is one of the most picturesque little towns

in the Pacific Northwest. With a serene harbor, water

views, a thriving downtown, rich history and a caring

community, Gig Harbor is one of the best places to grow

up and grow old.

Our community is vibrant. It is a walkable community,

with people who are easy to get to know. The same goes

for the downtown waterfront, with an accessible variety

of locally made and produced foods and goods. The city’s

6 GigHarborVisitorsGuide.com

oots in the working waterfront can be felt in the variety of seafood

available. From locally acclaimed chowder or casual fish and chips

to a widely beloved dinner with a view, there’s something for

everyone. The options don’t stop with seafood, with breakfast and

coffee spots, Teriyaki, Thai, traditional Italian, Mexican, inventive

Pacific Northwest cuisine, wine bars, deli favorites and gourmet

burgers, all along the walkable downtown waterfront.

Nestled just beyond the Tacoma Narrows Bridge (the infamous

site of “Galloping Gertie”), Gig Harbor is across the way from the

busy Tacoma metropolis. This makes Gig Harbor within reach

of the amenities of a larger city, but still nestled into a peaceful

niche that qualifies as an escape. The community is close knit, and

authentic, with highly rated schools and thriving local commerce.

A great place to raise a family, quality of life is key in Gig Harbor,

with close to 600 acres of public parks, impressive considering

the city itself is just over 3,000 acres. Many of these parks reside

on or near the waterfront. With welcome access points to water

for all comes the opportunity for sport, entertainment, arts and

nature. Combined with a dedicated and invested city structure

and people, our community is one that thrives outdoors and in

communal spaces.

Gig Harbor has a rich history, with local museums dedicated to

preservation of the charm that brought settlers for decades. The

original backbone of the economy was professional fishing and

boat building, and echoes of that history are seen in the annual

Maritime Gig Festival, which include the Blessing of the Fleet

ceremony for operational fishing boats headed out to sea for

the season. The tradition originated with fishermen but now

extends to servicemen, boaters and sailors as well. Gig Harbor

still builds boats today, but many local fishermen spend summers

up in Alaska where fishing is more profitable. In downtown Gig

Harbor lies the Harbor History Museum, celebrating 10 years in

the current location in 2021, which dedicates 7,000 square feet to

showcasing the rich and unique local culture and history. For a

live look at a turn-of-the-century schoolhouse, visitors can attend

re-enacted classes at the restored Midway Schoolhouse. Other

historic sites include the Eddon Boat Building, Wilkinson Barn

and Gig Harbor’s Historic Netsheds.

Here in Gig Harbor, our residents thrive. It’s a feeling that we pass

on to our guests. So, whether it’s the community, food, history,

or simply the beauty, whatever the reason, welcome to our home.

Welcome to Gig Harbor. We love it here.

WELCOME

FROM THE MAYOR

ABOUT THE CITY

Being mayor of Gig Harbor has been

an honor and privilege. I care deeply

about my hometown. This year has

been no different. Even cities with the most

beauty and charm were not immune from

the impacts of COVID, and yet where else

would you want to isolate than one of the

most beautiful places on earth—Gig Harbor.

I continue to be impressed by our community spirit and the volunteers

who have come forward to help anyone in need. I would like to thank the

hundreds of volunteers and organizations who have helped us weather

this pandemic. Though we have not gotten through this unscathed, we

have barely seen a dip in city revenue, and our building permits are up

30 percent, which means we have to be all that more protective to keep

the reason people call Gig Harbor home or visit here and continue to

come back to visit.

We have a great community which encompasses all of the greater Gig

Harbor area. As mayor, I came up with a vision for our city, with goals and

objectives to improve Gig Harbor. Some of these accomplishments are

very noticeable while others are not—but they’re all equally important.

We were able to preserve a 100-year-old forest at the entrance of our

bay. In 2018, it was set to be clear-cut; now it is preserved forever as

Soundview Forest Park.

We constructed critical road infrastructure projects that our citizens

and visitors can take advantage of, adding crosswalks, roundabouts and

improvements.

You’ll notice it’s easier to find public parking downtown these days. We

freed up spots that had been encroached on and revised many codes to

protect our city’s character, including regulations on critical wetlands,

buffers and clearcutting.

We changed our funding for tourism-focused grants for local

organizations, increasing it to $125,000 a year, so if you attend the

Waterfront Farmers Market or the Harbor History Museum, you’ll see

some of those funds in action.

We’ve improved City of Gig Harbor parks and recognized Ancestral

Homelands of the Puyallup Tribe through renaming Austin Estuary

to Austin Park at the txʷaalqəł Estuary, along with adding educational

signage. We also celebrate the heritage of our working waterfront while

embracing the recreational sailboats, paddleboards, kayaks and pleasure

craft that call our modern harbor home, all in the shadow of Mount

Rainier.

In this guide, we list events current as of publication. We’ll have

them updated as things change in our digital edition, located at

VisitGigHarborWA.com. In the summer, concerts and events downtown,

along with being out on the water, can’t be beat. When it gets cooler in

the fall and winter, Gig Harbor is one of the Pacific Northwest’s most cozy

and romantic waterfront destinations.

You can settle into a fine dining experience, explore art galleries or take

a self-guided tour of downtown’s independent breweries and distilleries.

Experiencing our city goes beyond just the waterfront. Check out our

22 unique parks set over 6 square miles, enjoy 8 miles of trails to see a

different side of the city by foot or bicycle, and our business districts: the

West Side, Gig Harbor North, Uptown and the Olympic Towne Center.

Whether you arrive by land, air or sea, we’re glad you’re here and look

forward to welcoming you back often. You’ll make some fantastic

memories here, just like I have.

Thank you, Gig Harbor, for the opportunity to represent you, the people,

as your City mayor.

Mayor Kit Kuhn, City of Gig Harbor

GET OUT ON THE WATER

Much of this maritime city’s charm and

natural wonders are best seen from the

water. Enjoy a morning or afternoon of

kayaking, paddleboarding, canoeing or

sailing while taking in the unforgettable

views.

HIT THE LINKS

If you’re looking to tee up, you can hit

the greens at several courses, including

Madrona Links, the Canterwood Golf

& Country Club or the Gig Harbor

Golf Club.

CAPTURE THE MOMENT

As one of the state’s—and nation’s—most

picturesque towns, there are various

locations to snap that perfect picture:

a lighthouse framed by Mount Rainier

and the Puget Sound, sailboats dotting

the harbor, or a beach set against the

Narrows Bridge.

MEET THE LOCALS

Attending local community events is the

best way to immerse yourself with the

locals—who are bound to become fast

friends. Live music in the park to family

movies, fun runs and fundraisers make

up the Harbor’s year-round calendar.

SHOP LOCAL

While in town, show your support to

locally owned businesses. With specialty

shops and artists sprinkled throughout

the harbor, you’re sure to find something

to gift yourself, family member or

friend. Great shopping continues in the

Westside and Uptown business districts

as well.

EXPLORE THE HISTORY

Gig Harbor is known for its rich maritime

history, which is proudly showcased

through staples like the Harbor History

Museum, Gig Harbor’s Historic Netsheds

and Gig Harbor BoatShop.

PARTAKE IN THE CUISINE

BE ENTERTAINED

If you’re looking to enjoy a casual

bite, family friendly meal or a more

upscale dining experience perfect for

two, innovative cuisine can be found

throughout the harbor no matter where

you choose to take a seat.

There’s no shortage of entertainment to

be found, from Galaxy’s IMAX theatres,

arcade games, duckpin bowling and a

laser tag venue at Ocean5, or escape

room experiences with Escape Hour.

TAKE A SPIN

RAISE A GLASS

For those looking to explore Gig Harbor

by bike, the Cushman Trail is a must.

The harbor’s most popular trail winds

through the harbor and connects to

the Narrows Bridge and caters to every

skill level.

Whether it is a winery, brewery or

distillery you’re seeking, the harbor has

it all! With many favorites created right

here in the harbor, there’s no better way

than tasting your way through the many

local libations.

HIKING, BIKING,

AND HITTING THE LINKS

GIG HARBOR AN ABUNDANT AREA FOR LEISURE

BY COLIN ANDERSON

The beauty of Gig Harbor is best seen from the water, and using

your feet or pedal power is the most active option to enjoy

breathtaking views. Gig Harbor is known for well-maintained

trails, like the city’s Cushman Trail, linking downtown to the Narrows

Bridge, traversing through some of the most interesting and beautiful

stretches of the city. If golf is your thing, be sure to check out some of the

fantastic and varied local courses.

Cushman Trail is the most popular in Gig Harbor. Continually expanded

as a city park initiative in partnership with PenMet Parks over the last

10 years, it now encompasses over 6 miles of paved pathway. The trail

is 16 feet wide and accommodates bikers as well as leisurely foot traffic.

The majority of the trail is ADA compliant, but challenging portions also

feature a 10 percent grade.

Beginning at the trail’s southern end, located at 14th Street, you will

soon find beautiful shrubbery and wetlands where birds chirp and the

occasional deer crosses your path. This is also the flattest portion of

the trail.

The Grandview Trailhead is roughly the midpoint of the trail and a great

place to hop on from downtown. Heading north from here, trail hikers

encounter more hills with steeper grades in this segment. There are

restrooms and drinking fountains at several locations.

Recent construction also connects the Cushman Trail with Tacoma‘s

Scott Pierson Trail, which adds a scenic trip over the new span of the

Tacoma Narrows Bridge. (There is no toll for crossing the bridge by bike.)

From the bridge, take in dramatic panoramic views of Point Defiance

and Vashon Island. Keep an eye on the sky and the sea for wildlife as well.

Dogs are permitted on the trail but must be cleaned up after and on leash.

Cyclists looking for more of a challenge can tackle extensive mountain

biking trails at 360 Trails Park, west of Purdy, and Banner Forest, north

of Olalla.

With nearly 40 parks, the Gig Harbor area has plenty of places to roam.

Sehmel Homestead Park and McCormick Forest Park are a couple of

local favorites.

Mild year-round temperatures make Gig Harbor a great place for golfers

of various levels. A destination course since the late 1970s, Madrona

Links prides itself on being a course for all levels. At the end of your

round, enjoy a bite or beverage on premise at Hacker’s.

To get in a quick nine holes, consider a trip to the Gig Harbor Golf Club,

now in its 60th year in operation. The course is regulation length, and

many of the tee boxes include spectacular views of Mt. Rainier. A driving

range and adult and youth instruction is available as well.

The full country club experience can be found at Canterwood Golf &

Country Club. An 18-hole championship course is flanked by tennis

courts, swimming pool and delicious dining options. Golf Digest has

rated the course in the Top 10 in all of Washington state.

Whether it is a leisurely game of golf, scenic peddling, strolling on a

paved trail or an exhilarating hike, you will be impressed by Gig Harbor’s

parks, trails and other great recreational outlets.

WATERFRONT & VIEW

WHERE YOU CAN RELAX, PLAY

PARKS AND TAKE IN THE VIEW

The Maritime City, located on the Gig Harbor Bay in Puget Sound, is as picturesque as it is steeped in

fishing history. Covering just over 6 square miles, the area boasts a population of around 10,500 and is

home to a collection of beautiful parks. Explore the picturesque waterfront parks that dot the shores of

the harbor, or venture inland for some exploring amidst the woods and trails. Breathtaking views are found

at each park location, and Mount Rainier and the Puget Sound can be viewed from several vantage points.

City parks are open from dawn to dusk, and several allow dogs on or off leash.

Ancich Waterfront Park

The newest addition to the Gig Harbor waterfront, Ancich Waterfront Park is situated on one of

the last undeveloped waterfront properties along the shoreline. The public park serves to highlight

the heritage and significance of commercial fishing in the area, and provides a viewing platform,

fully functional rehabilitated historic netshed and space to picnic. Art installations throughout

the park celebrate the rich fishing history of the area.

Finholm View Climb

The 100-step Finholm View Climb offers multiple landings with benches to sit and admire

the incredible vantage points overlooking the harbor and the marina. On a clear day you

can see Mount Rainier. The climb was installed in July 1999 by the Gig Harbor Lions Club,

in memory of Edward and John Finholm, who operated the Finholm Market nearby.

Bring your camera to capture the amazing views, and relax for a bit at the top of the halfmile-long

climb. Restroom facilities and visitor information are available at the North

Harborview Drive entrance.

Narrows Park

Thirty-five acres off Lucille Parkway boasts a particularly undiscovered and off-thebeaten-path

park that offers a relaxed place to picnic and explore. The 1,315 feet of

sandy-rock beach provides a picturesque setting to explore the shoreline, with

views of the Narrows Bridge and Tacoma. Dogs are allowed in the park on a

leash, and a non-motorized boat launch, picnic tables, telescopes and a

gazebo overlook provide some fun opportunities to make the

most of the waterfront.

Sunrise Beach Park

Located on Sunrise Beach Drive, the

park offers 82 acres of trails and

shoreline access. Swimming

and fishing are allowed,

and guests can enjoy

incredible views of the

Puget Sound, Vashon

Island and Mount

Rainier, as well as the

beautiful shoreline

on the Colvos

Passage. Picnic tables

are available for day

use, and dogs are

allowed throughout

the park on a leash.

ON THE WATER

ALONG

THE WATERFRONT

THE MOST SCENIC WAY TO

EXPLORE GIG HARBOR

By Colin Anderson

Whether you are in town for an afternoon, an extended

weekend or longer, Gig Harbor’s waterfront is the

can’t miss experience in the city. While remnants of

the fishing industry that shaped the town’s early days are ever

present, today you’ll find welcoming restaurants, cafés, tasting

rooms, shops, interactive sites, parks and, of course, water

access. Harborview Drive is easy to navigate—and you can

enjoy just about any experience you are looking for all in one

beautiful and welcoming location.

A great place to begin your walking tour is at the Harbor

History Museum. Admission is free and there is much to see

and learn about the founding of the city, its early settlers and

rich fishing tradition. The star of the show is the Shenandoah,

a 65-foot purse seiner vessel that’s undergoing an immense

restoration. Once completed, guests will be able to hop aboard

to see what life was like on this amazing vessel. You can also

watch the restoration in action and ask questions of those

helping bring the vessel back to life.

As you meander the roughly mile-long stretch of Harborview

Drive, you’ll encounter several parks in which to take a break

and take in the view. Ancich Waterfront Park is a wonderful

new place for a picnic. You’ll find several tables perched above

the harbor surrounded by natural vegetation. Eddon Boat Park

is a nice mix of history and relaxation, including a small beach

home to the Gig Harbor BoatShop, which preserves part of Gig

Harbor’s working waterfront heritage, and offers programming

to keep traditional wooden boat-making skills alive. Skansie

Brothers Park and Netshed is one of the main gathering places

downtown. The Jerisich public dock and attached park offer a great

place to watch kayakers practice or enjoy live music in the summers.

You can also step inside the historic Skansie Brothers House, one of the

prominent families and early boat builders in the area that now serves

as home to Gig Harbor’s Visitor Center, as well as interactive learning

exhibits from Harbor WildWatch.

Those looking to do some window shopping will find an eclectic mix

of locally owned shops. The Beach Basket is a favorite spot for many,

the family run spot has been there for over 50 years and includes some

very unique items as well as year-round Christmas décor. The Weathered

Cottage and Sea Hags Fine Art are other popular spots, and guests will

find pet shops, music, specialty foods, fishing and outdoor outfitters

dotting the downtown promenade.

For early risers, great cafés and to-go coffee shops open in time to catch a

beautiful sunrise. Java and Clay is a paint-your-own ceramics studio with

a espresso shop attached. Kelly’s Café and Espresso is another popular

spot where locals begin their day. Susanne’s Bakery and Deli offers local

favorites with pastries and sandwiches to go, and you can’t miss the

“Harburrito” breakfast burrito from the Harbor General Store, located

just off of Harborview Drive.

36 GigHarborVisitorsGuide.com

Gig Harbor is home to a couple of popular breweries and distilleries

found in the Northwest. 7 Seas Brewing Company recently opened up

a new tasting room right on the water. It’s family friendly, and guests are

welcome to bring their own food, or order takeout from their favorite

spot. You’ll find their standard brews and also a huge selection of seasonal

and aged bottles you can take home with you.

Heritage Distilling gained notoriety throughout the country for its

Brown Sugar Bourbon, but the ever-expanding distiller now focuses on

whiskey, gin, rum, and many unique flavored vodkas—stop in for a taste

test of ghost pepper, bacon, blood orange and huckleberry vodkas. The

waterfront location is open daily and also offers tours.

Finding a bite to eat is not a difficult task, choosing between great food

with even better views is the real challenge. Tides Tavern is a popular

laid-back adult hangout that supports local purveyors and features one of

the best patios in town. Netshed No.9, Anthony’s and Brix 25˚ offer fine

dining with a view. More casual eats include The Gourmet Burger Shop,

El Pueblito, Kelly’s and Millville Pizza Company.

Finally, if you ask anyone where the best view of the Harbor is, you’ll find

it on the water. Whether by power boat, sail, canoe, kayak or SUP, taking

in the views while floating around the harbor just can’t be beat. Several

companies offer boat tours of the region or sunset cruises. You can rent

kayaks, paddleboards or electric boats for the day or by the hour, and

there are many public access places to launch.

The City of Gig Harbor and the Downtown Waterfront Association are

wonderful resources in which to help you plan your visit. Take time to

enjoy the scenic, friendly and lively waterfront, and enjoy a relaxing day

in wherever your journey takes you … along the waterfront!

THINGS TO DO

GIG HARBOR

FILM

FESTIVAL

CULTIVATING A COMMUNITY OF FILMMAKERS AND FILM-LOVERS

By Colin Anderson

The lights are back on at the Galaxy Theatre and, while it’s long

been a favorite spot to catch Hollywood blockbusters, many

around town look forward to September—when a completely

different brand of movies takes center screen.

The Gig Harbor Film Festival is one of the premier film festivals in the

Northwest and continues to gain national attention and attract a large

audience of filmmakers and film-lovers.

With the 2020 festival having been canceled, filmmakers and attendees

are very much looking forward to enjoying the festivities once again. The

2021 Film Festival will take place September 23 through September 26.

Consistently named a Top-100 Film Festival in the world by FilmFreeway,

Gig Harbor organizers are eager to put on another great show this year.

The red carpet is rolled out for filmmakers and guests with

accommodations, a ride service, catered parties and their own onsite

lounge. Organizers say filmmakers regularly comment on what a thrill it

is to see their work in such a beautiful world-class theatre. Films shown

at the festival come from a wide range of formats, styles and genres.

Each is an independent production not backed by big-money studios.

Independent filmmakers focus on the art of filmmaking and storytelling.

The mission of the Gig Harbor Film Festival is to cultivate a community of

filmmakers and film-lovers while celebrating the power of the cinematic

arts to educate, entertain and inspire. Film Festival organizers and

volunteers strive to share the message that this festival is about people

coming together to share the art of storytelling through film and that

independent film is worth celebrating.

Filmmakers have already submitted more than 500 films for festival

consideration. The fully digital theatre and IMAX screen ensure films

are portrayed in the best possible setting. This is incredibly appealing

for many filmmakers, who are accustomed to seeing their films shown

50 GigHarborVisitorsGuide.com

in older art-house theatres, community centers and

occasional makeshift venues.

One great benefit in attending this event is the

chance to speak directly with the filmmakers. After

many of the films, there is a Q&A session with the

director. Here the audience can dive deeper into the

storyline or ask in-depth questions about the way a

scene was shot or where the creative inspiration for

the piece originated. While not every director attends

in-person, a great many do, and this type of access

isn’t especially common in other film festival settings.

Another reason many choose to attend the event

is the surrounding ongoing party. Directors make

appearances at hosted and catered parties, with the

bigger ones happening at the conclusions of the

screenings each day. Attendees can buy passes to

these events and partake in yet another chance to

socialize with and learn from filmmakers.

There are two ways to enjoy the festival. Ticket

packages will be announced closer to the event day,

but will include a weekend pass to all films or a VIP

pass, which grants early access to all film screenings,

access to the VIP lounge, Opening Night Gala

and afterparties.

The 2021 festival will include a carefully selected

group of diverse films and feature everything from

short films to longer format. It’s all part of the

experience the Film Festival strives to present each

year. For the Gig Harbor Film Festival, it’s about

cultivating a community of filmmakers and filmlovers

who come together to experience stories in

their most pure and undiluted form.

For additional information, please be sure to visit

GigHarborFilm.org. Enjoy the show!

The fully digital theatre and

IMAX screen ensure films

are portrayed in the best

possible setting.

SUMMER SOUNDS

at Skansie

52 GigHarborVisitorsGuide.com

Outdoor summer concerts in Skansie Park are one of the most

beloved warm-weather events in downtown Gig Harbor. Situated

on the waterfront, near the mouth of the harbor, the park is

accessible via boat, kayak or paddleboard, or concert-goers can bring a

blanket and snag a seat on the lawn.

Whether you choose to arrive by land or by sea, this Tuesday night series

is a celebration of local talent set up against one of Washington’s most

picturesque backgrounds, welcoming one and all with live entertainment

from local musicians and well-known bands. The evening concerts are

HARBOR LEARN AND WILDWATCH

EXPLORE WITH HARBOR WILDWATCH

THE IMPACT OF ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION

By Lindsey Stover, Executive Director at Harbor WildWatch

THINGS TO DO

Why is environmental education important to incorporate

into a child’s curricula? What role does it play in developing

a sense of place and passion for the natural environment?

And what impact can exposure to quality outdoor experiences have on

a child’s future?

It has long been accepted that environmental education positively

influences academic achievement, but researchers at Stanford

University needed data to support the belief that these programs have

a more expansive impact on young minds. After a comprehensive

analysis of 20 years’ worth of peer-reviewed studies, they found

clear evidence that environmentally focused activities help develop

life-building skills among youth. Their review showed that students

exposed to quality environmental education opportunities throughout

their academic careers experienced significant improvement in:

• Critical thinking, oral communication, analytical skills and problemsolving

• Enthusiasm for and interest in school

• Self-esteem, character development, teamwork and leadership skills

• Environmentally friendly behavior

• Feelings of civic responsibility and empowerment

• And aptitude in science, mathematics, reading and writing

“There is no doubt that environmental education is one of the most

effective ways to instill a passion for learning among students,” says

Dr. Nicole Ardoin. It is a powerful teaching tool because it “provides

transformative learning opportunities that engage young people in the

world around them in meaningful, collaborative ways.”

Harbor WildWatch proudly provides this outlet for students in the

greater Gig Harbor community—delivering hundreds of unique

opportunities that improve eco-literacy and stewardship practices each

year. From beach walks that introduce a child to their first octopus to

classroom STEM workshops that demonstrate the salmon life cycle,

each activity is designed to live up to our motto of “Learn. Have Fun.”

The interactive nature of these programs ensures students enjoy the

learning process and are eager to come back for more.

The exposure we provide to local beaches, wetlands, estuaries and

forested areas helps develop a strong sense of place among youth—an

appreciation for the natural environment, its inhabitants, and their role

in keeping it healthy. As students grow into adulthood and become

decision-makers of their own, we hope these experiences lead to

attitudes and behaviors that protect the natural world.

If you want your child to experience the many benefits of

environmental education, we invite you to join us on one of our free,

family friendly programs. Visit the events calendar on our website at

HarborWildWatch.org or follow us on our social media platforms to

find a program that your family will enjoy. We look forward to helping

your child get to know and love this place we all call home.

THE SCOOP ON REAL ESTATE IN

GIG HARBOR

New residents continue to make their

way to this maritime city

By Rachel Kelly and Jillian Chandler

More and more people are being drawn to Gig Harbor from all over the

country. The beauty of this place, the people who make up the community,

and the abundance of wildlife, nature and year-round events makes Gig

Harbor an attractive destination. Over the years, that rare combination of a fantastic

quality of life, coupled with affordability, has made the decision even easier when

individuals or families are looking to relocate. But with the unpredictability 2020

brought with it, which has continued into 2021, there is an imbalance of supply and

demand when it comes to available—and affordable—real estate.

“The current Gig Harbor real estate market is extremely competitive. The number

of homes on the market is low, buyer demand is high, and prices are escalating. We

expect that the inventory shortage will continue, and it will be a ‘seller’s market’

for the foreseeable future,” says Joe Sanchez, Broker at Joe Sanchez & Associates of

Coldwell Banker Bain.

From apartment and condominium living to single family homes on large, forested

lots, to those jaw-dropping waterfront homes, Gig Harbor has just what you’re looking

for. A variety of retirement and assisted living facilities with the best in amenities

round out the housing scene.

Buyers are relocating from just about everywhere, and the housing supply is low.

Once a home goes on the market, there are usually several offers within the week at

or above the asking price. This comes at a time when interest rates are at a record low.

The pandemic altered the way we do work, and many companies found that remote

employees are happier and more productive. That change in perspective has made

a huge impact in the real estate market. Even as we return to normality, the shift to

working from home is expected to continue. This has resulted in a mass exodus from

places like California, Texas and Seattle. People are simply looking for a higher quality

of life, bigger homes and more land with a more reasonable price tag. We’ve known all

along, but the world is finding out our secret: It’s incredible to live here.

For those moving into the area, Realtors report the natural beauty of the area and the

relaxed lifestyle of a smaller town continues to be the largest draw to Gig Harbor. The

slower pace of life with easy access to big-city amenities is truly unique.

If you own a home and you’re looking to move, now is the time to do it. Interest

rates are at an all-time low, which means that most homeowners are finding that they

THE BEAUTY OF THIS PLACE, THE PEOPLE WHO MAKE UP THE

ATTRACTIVE DESTINATION.

can afford to go where they please. However, because there’s a shortage

of available homes, make sure you have a contingency plan. It may take a

while and a dedicated, in-the-know Realtor to find what you’re looking for.

“Our needs went from walkability and commute times to sprawl space

and outdoor amenities,” says Jennifer Hawkins of Key2See Team with

Hawkins-Poe Real Estate Services. The value of home, family and the

outdoors has been elevated in our minds. We rest, exercise, work, vent

and create at home. It’s important that home is a good place to be; that

outside is a beautiful place to explore.

There’s the charm of downtown shops and restaurants; walkability; aweinspiring

water views and secret beach spots. It is a safe place to raise a

family, with wonderful neighborhoods and schools, and ideal for those

looking to live out the rest of their days in serenity.

“Residents fall in love with the area and genuinely enjoy living here,”

affirms Sanchez.

And then there’s the deep sense of community that Gig Harbor is known

for. As Lynn MacGougan, Managing Broker at Joe Sanchez & Associates

of Coldwell Banker Bain, shares, “There are events and activities taking

place year-round that bring people of all ages together. It helps folks get to

know one another and builds that small-town feel. Surrounded by water

in all directions, the Gig Harbor area has great parks, quality restaurants

and superb boating. With Seattle and Tacoma nearby, big-city amenities

and events are easy to access. It all adds up to an extraordinary quality

of life.”

Even with the recent growth, Gig Harbor has maintained its small-town

charm. For those still in search of a home to call their own here, you won’t

want to wait long! As Gig Harbor continues to grow, the prices of homes

will follow.

Gig Harbor’s population has nearly doubled in the past 10 years, and

development has expanded rapidly. “What’s consistent throughout Gig

Harbor is a commitment to quality of life, and smart, well-planned

development, whether that be the addition of new parks, summer

events, habitat preservation, celebrating our working waterfront heritage

or building new elementary schools and upgrading transportation

infrastructure,” says City Communications Director Laura Pettitt.

As you make your way across the Narrows Bridge and approach Gig

Harbor, the view never grows old. Those who live here are blessed to call

Gig Harbor home. To be able to own just a small piece of this maritime

city along the water is something not to be taken for granted. For those

looking to buy, it may be a more difficult process than they had hoped for,

but in the end, there’s no place like home. And what better place to call

home than Gig Harbor.

Shared Values: Since day one, the team has remained committed

NONPROFIT

GREATER GIG HARBOR FOUNDATION

BUILDING. BRIDGING. ENRICHING.

Nonprofit aims to meet the community’s diverse and evolving needs | By Jillian Chandler

“The Greater Gig Harbor Foundation envisions an engaged community

working together to enhance the lives of all residents in our greater

peninsulas community and the environment that sustains us—today and

for future generations.”

May 2021 marked the 15th year since the Greater Gig Harbor Foundation

was incorporated, as its founding members realized the critical gap in the

community’s nonprofit sector—specifically, there was no organization

working directly to raise essential funding to provide perpetual resources

to help meet the critical and changing needs of the community. Programs,

funds and endeavors of the charitable 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization

are overseen by a Board of Directors, with top officers Judson Morris,

president, and Dr. Julie Ann Gustanski, CEO and president emeritus.

Since 2006, the work achieved through the Greater Gig Harbor Foundation

(GGHF) is holistic, multifunctional, and cross-disciplinary. Over the

past 15 years, GGHF has raised, distributed and re-invested more than

$11.4 million in assets directly into the Gig Harbor and Key Peninsula

communities through grants, scholarships and programs across the

organization’s five mission-focused areas: Arts & Culture, Education,

Environment, Recreation and Social Capital—all vital in supporting a

vibrant, healthy and sustainable community.

“We work collaboratively to build, bridge and enrich our great Gig Harbor

and Key Peninsula region by raising funds, advocating for and providing

support to help meet diverse and emerging community needs,” states Ariel

Gustanski, the foundation’s COO.

Unlike most of the more than 800 community foundations across the

country, in addition to serving as catalyst for charitable giving to support

community needs, the Foundation also has its “boots on the ground,”

according to Gustanski. “So, in addition to working to improve our

community’s quality of life by connecting people who care with causes that

matter, we realize our mission through our own programs, projects and

events as well.”

84 GigHarborVisitorsGuide.com

As a community foundation, the GGHF exists to address the needs of

the community—whatever that may look like. “For several years, we

have focused on our various programs (Curious by Nature School, Gig

Harbor Senior Center, EnviroCorps, Students of Distinction, Gig Harbor

Basket Brigade, etc.), but when the pandemic hit, we quickly adjusted,

realizing that at that moment we needed to serve our community

differently,” shares Gustanski.

“In this realization, we were able to provide more than 10,000 delivered

funding to local organizations, businesses and families.”

Annually, more than 600 volunteers come together to help make everything

the foundation does possible, and the staff provides hundreds of hours to

support a variety of community efforts: road, park and trail clean-ups;

invasive species removal and habitat restoration projects; and community

events such as the Gig Harbor Farmers Market, Gig Harbor Basket Brigade,

Donkey Creek Chum Festival, Maritime Gig Festival, Scarecrow Festival,

Peninsula Early Learning Jamboree and Wings & Wheels.

“The most rewarding thing about the work that the Greater Gig Harbor

Foundation does is seeing the direct impact our programs, services, grants

and events have within our community,” smiles Morris.

HARBOR HISTORY

100 YEARS

OF BOATING HISTORY

The BoatShop at Eddon Boatyard perpetuates

skills and traditions of a working waterfront

By Abigail Thorpe

In 2003, plans were introduced to demolish

the Eddon Boatyard, which had fallen into

disrepair, and replace it with a gated community.

What could have been the end of an historic Gig

Harbor landmark became a new beginning, as four

community members rallied behind the boatyard

and presented an alternative plan to preserve the

site and its history.

“Four supporters grew to dozens and ultimately

hundreds,” recalls BoatShop President Guy Hoppen.

The Washington Trust for Historic Preservation

issued a grant to help with community outreach,

and ultimately through the support of elected

officials and the community, a bond was issued to

save Eddon Boatyard in November of 2004.

Today, Eddon Boatyard serves as a working

waterfront that harkens back to its early beginnings

and the boating and fishing industry that is

foundational to Gig Harbor. The Gig Harbor

BoatShop, which moved into the restored Eddon

Boatyard in 2010, is central to the preservation of

this history, delivering hands-on boat building and

skills-based programming to community members

and visitors.

86 GigHarborVisitorsGuide.com

“Boats being built and repaired at the Eddon Boatyard secures a use at the

historic site that is over a century old,” explains Hoppen. “The nonprofit

Gig Harbor BoatShop providing the community at large and our guests

opportunities to experience that craft and heritage through events and

programming broadens the cultural impact of that history and assures

that skills and knowledge is passed down.”

The BoatShop’s mission to preserve

Gig Harbor’s historic waterfront

and the craft of wooden boat

building has resulted in a thriving

educational hub that perpetuates

the working waterfront skills, uses

and traditions that have marked this

area for generations.

participants will help build a carvel-planked motor launch in a 12-week,

three-days per week class. We hope to begin in late summer, early fall.”

The BoatShop also plans to continue expanding its programming on the

Veteran to include waterfront excursions and portions of a commercial

fishing crew training program.

Whether just gazing at the

historic structure while walking

by, accessing the waterfront to

paddleboard, or participating in

skills programs or events inside

the boatyard, the community’s

connection to the legacy and

history of our working waterfront

is secured. That’s important.”

While the BoatShop closed during the pandemic to help protect the

health of the community, they are excited to resume classes and programs

as 2021 unfolds, and will populate the website with program updates as

they move through the spring and summer.

“We look forward to resuming our successful menu of public programs

as the public health crisis is brought under control,” explains Hoppen.

“Among the most exciting new offerings is ‘Mini Boat School,’ where six

The BoatShop survives on the generosity of those who donate or attend

programs, foundation grants, auction proceeds and the help of generous

volunteers, along with funding from the City of Gig Harbor to maintain

and keep the Eddon Brick House open. Individuals and families are

invited to get involved by volunteering, donating funds or items, and

participating in events.

HARBOR HISTORY

CELEBRATING 10 YEARS IN ITS PERMANENT HOME

From stories of boat builders and fishermen to farmers and ferry operators

By Stephanie Lile, Director, Harbor History Museum

The Harbor History Museum is nestled on the Gig Harbor

waterfront where Donkey Creek meets the bay. Celebrating its

10th year of operation, the Harbor History Museum and its site

have a much deeper history. Once home to a thriving community known

as txʷaalqəł, meaning “where game is found” in Lushootseed, the site was

later home to the C.O. Austin Mill, the Eve-Glo Art Studio, Peninsula

Light Company, and the Beach Basket/Means Ornamental garden shop.

In 2009, one warehouse building was transformed into the iconic “red

barn” museum building we know today. Large community artifacts such

as the 1893 Midway Schoolhouse and the 1925 fishing boat, Shenandoah,

were moved onto the museum campus for preservation and exhibition.

On opening day September 18, 2010, visitors stepped through the

museum’s front doors—surrounded by massive logs reminiscent of the

trees that were once milled here—for the first time.

Today, the museum’s 7,500-square-foot permanent gallery takes you

on a journey from the twisted remnants of “Galloping Gertie” (the first

Tacoma Narrows Bridge) to the immigrant stories of boat builders,

fishermen, farmers and ferry operators. Look closely, and you’ll find the

first winners of Gig Harbor’s fabled Round Rock Contest and hear the

clamor of the crowd as C.E. Shaw’s famous racing roosters take to the

track. These roosters were so well-known they were invited to Madison

Square Garden, New York, in 1938.

Fans of local boat building will delight in the Willits canoe, the giant

wheel from the ferry Defiance, and a purse seiner’s power block—the

1950s invention that changed commercial fishing forever. Loved by many

are the Norwegian and Croatian costumes on display from the days of

Scandia Gaard, a local attraction born in the 1950s where Nordic heritage

was celebrated through music, dance and folklore.

Outside, visitors marvel at the one-room schoolhouse, the last of its kind

in the Gig Harbor area. Restored to its early 1900s days, the schoolhouse

is home to the popular Pioneer School Experience field trip program

for third- through fifth-grade students. During this program, costumed

school teachers lead students through frontier lessons in reading, writing

and arithmetic.

The FV Shenandoah is 65 feet of wonder. Built at Skansie Brothers

Shipyard in Gig Harbor and fished for some seven decades by local

Croatian families, the boat is undergoing complete conservation and will

eventually be open for public tours. The museum has launched a capital

campaign to raise $2.5 million for the completion of the Maritime Gallery,

enclosing the space for year-round use and creating new, interactive

exhibits highlighting the stories of the fishing fleet, Thunderbird sailboats,

and the maritime heritage so distinctive to the South Puget Sound.

The Gig Harbor Peninsula Historical Society has come a long way from

kitchen table club meetings in 1964 to opening its permanent museum

home in 2010. We have 10 years to celebrate and 10 more years to toast.

Join us on September 18, 2021, as we celebrate a decade of the museum’s

permanent home and reveal big plans for completing the Maritime

Gallery at the 20th annual History Rocks fundraising event.

SENIOR LIVING

SENIOR LIVING IN THE HARBOR

Discover the perfect fit for your lifestyle

By Rachel Kelly

Gig Harbor is the perfect place to settle down. From downtown

waterfront concerts, historical downtown walks and shopping

and dining accessibility, there is no shortage of things to do. It

is no surprise that Gig Harbor supports a wide variety of senior living

options: 55+ communities, independent living, assisted living, hospice

care and continuing care.

There are eight 55+ active living communities in Gig Harbor.

Affordable, single-story, easy-to-maintain lots with access to various

outdoor amenities are available.

Independent living provides a minimal amount of support while

keeping privacy intact. These apartments are rentable and include

a vibrant community, and range from affordable to luxury options.

Generally included are organized activities, classes, rides, and minimal

health care; allowing for ownership while not sacrificing community

engagement. One example is The Lodge at Mallard’s Landing.

There are five homes in the larger community that provide 24-hour care

for a variety of medical issues associated with age, including hospice.

Two of these specialize in memory care. These homes and facilities are

for individuals who are no longer able to care for themselves, with loved

ones who cannot provide full-time care. These include the smaller and

more personable and attentive Family First Adult Family Homes—

providing care solutions that specialize in dementia, Alzheimer’s,

Parkinson’s, stroke, diabetes, special diets and hospice care—to the

larger Olympic Alzheimer’s Residence.

Lastly, several continuing care communities are options as well. These

communities are meant to be neighborhoods that support seniors from

age 55 until the end of their lives. Continuing care communities provide

the variety of services meant for independent active living, while also

providing for the services that seniors may need as they age. You will

find a diverse group of people of all ages in these communities, as well

as a variety of experiences. These include, but are not limited to, Heron’s

Key, Kensington Gardens, and Harbor Place at Cottesmore. Harbor

Place at Cottesmore offers independent retirement and assisted living,

with an onsite salon, spa, fitness center and restaurant-like dining,

while its sister community Cottesmore of Life Care offers 24-hour

skilled nursing and inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation services.

Retirement and senior living in Gig Harbor has many options to

explore, and the best part is everyone can make it their own and find

that perfect fit.
