Every week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or, 

maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s 

excellent dining establishments. Everything is totally different 

on the food landscape these days, but in the interests of 

the public, we are still venturing out there and enjoying the 

victuals provided by local eateries. 

The place: SeaSalt Restaurant on Beach Avenue. Enjoy a spectacular 

view of the beach right from your table or bar stool. The restaurant 

is also a part of the Ocean Club Hotel, so if you are staying with 

them, you can enjoy room service and their pool-side bar and lounge 

chairs. 

The bar manager: We ran into bar manager Alex Deabenderfer 

who happens to be the brother of Exit Zero staffer, Caiti Dix — always 

nice to chat with a familiar face. Alex started just about two months 

ago after previous gigs at a few other spots around town including 

Harry’s and Delaney’s. He told us about the labor shortage they’ve 

been facing along with just about every restaurant in and out of town. 

Luckily, they are starting to get back up on their feet with employment 

now that J-1 students can begin returning. To keep with that momentum, 

Alex also let us know that they are still hiring for breakfast, and 

anyone interested can apply at SeaSalt. 

The food: After changing our minds quite a few times, Jack went 

for the chicken quesadilla, Kayla enjoyed an avocado BLT and Nicole 

chose the... yep, you guessed it... a chicken Caesar salad. You can 

never go wrong with classic, simple dishes — and at least we’re trying 

to stay healthy... could be a very different story next week. 

The special: We couldn’t take advantage because it was too early 

and the middle of the work week, but on Wednesdays guests can enjoy 

$6 margaritas on the upper deck. Pair that with a hot summer day 

across from the beach and you’ll be hooked. 

The takeaway: SeaSalt Restaurant is open seven days a week 

serving breakfast, lunch and dinner which begins at 5. If you aren’t 

looking to dine in, enjoy takeout all day. The beautiful view of the 

beach and cool ocean breeze is a definite draw that makes SeaSalt a 

can’t-miss experience while visiting Cape May. If you aren’t hungry, 

grab a cocktail or an ice-cold draft from the tiki bar after a long beach 

day. And don’t forget those Wednesday margarita specials.

come to you this week very late on deadline 

night, making my editors sweat, but 

I don’t care, I’m a rebel. The bad boy of 

Cape May newspaper columnists. The 

Charlie Sheen of shabbily researched 

local journalism. Only with a lot less money. 

Like, a whole lot less. There’s also tons of 

fireworks erupting every few seconds, which 

means I have a rather large dog freaking 

out and begging for my attention (which 

I’m withholding because I’m Catholic). Poor 

Charlee, she’s such a good girl. Then there’s 

Levi, the new cat, who is constantly trying 

to murder me and is a bad boy. Like me. So I 

respect the hustle. I’m also quite drunk, like 

any good American writing a column on the 

4th (and very early 5th) of July, so please forgive 

any typos, vulgarities or rants... 

As we speak, I am coming off one of the 

busiest musical weeks I can remember, with 

seven gigs in six days, six of them between 

Thursday and Sunday at such exotic locations 

as Ferry Park, Exit Zero Filling Station and 

Rusty Nail. And boy is my throat tired. Yeah 

yeah, I know it’s not “real” work, but I defy 

any of you (non-singers) to stand in a corner 

and sing for four hours. (Okay, my job is easy, 

but it’s still hard on the old voice box.) 

But let’s talk less about that and more 

about how it took an hour to write those first 

two paragraphs... 

Weekly Weight Watch: As my weight 

goes, it’s been an awful year so far as I’ve 

struggled to stay below 250. But after a busy 

weekend, little food and lots of vodka, I’ve 

managed to eke down to 238. I’m also in what 

I’m calling “No Carb July”, so I’ll be eating 

lots of meat and, I guess, salad, like I’m some 

kind of teenage girl who reads too much 

Cosmopolitan.

EZFS neighbor David Dee stopped over 

to my TNT gig on Friday to bask in his newfound 

glory as “Guy Who Brought Me Some 

Chick-Fil-A That One Time.” Calm down 

Dave, it’s not like you’re brokering peace in 

the Middle East, it was just some sandwiches. 

Yeesh. (Also, Dave and his lovely bride Fay 

are awesome, and I only write these sarcastic 

things because I’m not sure how to deal with 

people who are nice to me ALL THE TIME. 

It’s probably the Irish-Catholic in me. I feel 

like I use this excuse a lot.) 

Two hours in now. I wonder if Hemingway 

ever took two hours to craft three mediocre 

paragraphs? 

Owen, Henry and I decided to hit the 

driving range in Rio Grande last Monday 

after delivering a few thousand Cool Cape May 

books around town ( you’re welcome) and for 



everyone who thinks golf isn’t 

a sport, go take 100 swings. My 

back, knees and hips are killing 

me. Though it could be worse; 

my wife could try to kill me in 

the driveway. (Tiger Woods joke 

there. I’m very timely.) 

Nose Hair Plucker of the 

Week: I had a sit-down with 

Jack Wright last Wednesday to 

talk about Important Things, but 

he spent the whole time plucking 

my nose hairs. I trim the ol’ 

sniffer at least once a week, as 

guys my age must, but I guess 

there were a few rogues in there 

that Jack just couldn’t abide. It 

was… something. 

The result of the meeting? 

Let’s just say you may be hearing 

some Beatles, Billy Joel, Bruce 

Springsteen and Prince tunes at 

Ferry Park in 2022. If renovations 

are complete and I live long 

enough to form a new band. 

Local traffic reporter Sandy 

McCullough recently celebrated 

his 105th birthday, so be sure 

to wish him a (very gentle, his 

bones are brittle) happy birthday 

when you see him. I cracked one 

joke at his expense back in 1996 

at the old Rusty Nail. “Take your 

sweater off and stay a while!” I 

said while he was shirtless (he’s 

kinda furry). He shot me a look 

that said, “Enjoy that joke, it’s 

your last.” And I haven’t made fun 

of him since. Uh… until just now.

Bartender of the Week: Kerry, 

not Carrie, at On the Rocks at 

Ferry Park. Undertow regrets the 

error and any impact it may have 

on me getting vodka. 

I can’t be the only only one 

who gets filled with blinding rage 

every time that stupid groundhog 

shows up in those Pennsylvania 

lottery commercials, can I? I’m 

talking murderous. 

Larry Crinkle Update of the 

Week: Larry, the ICONIC character 

I played in a series of commercials 

in 2016, will be making 

a return in our near future, but 

not near enough that I can talk 

about it. I’ve seen a rough cut of 

the first few new one and they’re 

going to be pretty great. No idea 

what I’m talking about? YouTube 

“Larry Crinkle Davis Honda” and 

gird your loins. 

The best part of being the 

guy who does most of (all of) 

the laundry is putting 36 towels 

on the rack in the bathroom 

on Friday and finding 0 left on 

Sunday. 

Don’t you hate it when the 

cat who is constantly trying to 

claw your eyes out follows you 

into the bathroom and picks a 

super-bad time to look in the 

bowl while you’re taking a whizz? 

Curiosity and all that. 

Social media was a mistake. 

If I haven’t said so recently, 

Tim Joyce, my partner in TNT 

(Terry and Tim, get it?), is the 

best co-conspirator a guy could 

ask for. Not only is he a great 

guitarist, he’s a good friend, a 

confidant, and always gives me 

a ride home when I’ve had too 

much to drink on the 4th of July. 

AMERICA! (But seriously, Tim is 

the best. Just don’t tell him I said 

so. He doesn’t read this magazine 

and has no social media. Just 

proving how smart he is.)

somewhere. In the meantime,

New Show At SOMA 

The NewArt Gallery announces third art exhibition of the 2021 season 

SOMA NewArt Gallery announces its 

third art exhibition of the 2021 season, 

featuring three regional solo artists and 

their work. “A Day at the Submarine 

Races” by Rye Tippett, “Moments 

Well Spent” by Monica Nask and “Eclectic 

Harmony” by Marie Natale will be on display 

July 10 through August 8. 

Tippett’s paintings have humor, and his 

work is inspired by the countryside and changing 

seasons. Nask’s work is a visual diary of 

her days at the beach — she is inspired by 

landscapes along the coast. Natale’s simplest 

of subjects take on a special luminosity and 

combines the flow of paint with her light and 

brilliant magic. 

There will be an opening night Meet the 

Artist reception on Saturday, July 10 from 6 to 

9pm. Art lovers are invited to attend and enjoy 

an evening of art and conversation.

All things happen for good,” or so 

we’ve heard the biblical expression. 

The term should provide comfort, 

especially in the face of tragedy or 

loss. But what if instead of loss, there 

was restoration that cannot be explained? 

The premise of the series Manifest is compelling. 

A plane from Jamaica is forced to 

land in New York. It is surrounded by fire and 

police on the tarmac. Passengers are detained. 

Why? The plane took off five years ago and 

was never heard from until that night. 

The series had been around for a few 

years, but I’d missed it when it was broadcast. 

Netflix recently added it to its library, and it 

caught my attention as it has recently become 

the top-rated show the service is streaming. 

As in number one or two streamed show over 

the past couple weeks. 

Can that premise be the basis of an ongoing 

show? It lasted a couple of seasons on 

NBC first, then got a boost from Netflix. And 

as of a few days ago, the show’s fan base 

(called “Manifesters”) has been petitioning

the show’s creator, Jeff Rake, to keep pursuing 

episodes in a new season. After 42 episodes, 

the series was cancelled. 

The story centers on Michaela (Melissa 

Roxburgh), a woman ready to make a commitment 

to her boyfriend as she was leaving 

a family trip in Jamaica with the boyfriend, 

her parents, brother, his wife, and their twin 

children. One plane leaving Jamaica was overbooked 

so the airline offered $400 for passen- 

gers to take a later flight. Michaela and her 

brother and his son take the offer. 

As far as Michaela’s parents, boyfriend, 

and the rest of the world is concerned, that 

was the last they had heard from all the passengers 

— for over five years. A lot can happen 

in five years. Will Michaela’s boyfriend be 

waiting — or will he have moved on? The son 

who joined his father was suffering from a 

terminal illness that could not be cured. Five 

years later, could treatment be possible? 

Some critics say the series was turning 

into more of a soap opera toward the end. 

Perhaps NBC can learn from short series success 

like the Netflix original Queen’s Gambit 

that had a successful one-season run with a 

clear and definitive ending. Sure, who doesn’t 

want to have the longevity of a show that runs 

32 seasons, the most ever by far in history! Be

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu 

It’s time. Time for young Osprey to be 

testing their wings and learning the 

ropes of being a fish-eating raptor. Now 

until September, the air over Maurice 

town will ring with the strident piping of 

young begging to be fed. Mom and dad will be 

hard pressed to bring in the Menhaden. 

It’s quite a feat being an Osprey. First 

you are one of the few raptors with a global 

distribution absent only in Antarctica. Next 

you are the sole representative of your family, 

Pandonidae and finally you are one of the few 

birds capable of securing prey beneath the 

water’s surface. Bald Eagles pluck fish from 

the surface but Osprey dive for fish, talons 

first, often completely immersing themselves. 

The feet of Osprey are equipped with a swiveling 

outer toe that allows birds to present prey 

with a for cornered new of talons. The pads of 

the feet are fitted with tiny spicules suited for 

grasping slippery prey. 

To catch fish, Osprey must contend 

with glare on the water, a challenge mitigated 

somewhat by the bird’s dark mask. The 

greater challenge is dealing with refraction. 

Fish are not where they appear. It takes time 

for the Osprey to learn to compensate for 

refraction, which is why adults must continue 

to bring fish to their young for several weeks. 

But, ready or not, come September, it’s time 

for Osprey to leave the riches of Delaware 

Bay and retreat into the riches of the Amazon 

Basin where many of our birds winter. Getting 

there means hours over the Atlantic or Gulf 

of Mexico. But Osprey are strong fliers, “vigorous 

winged,” as Alexander described them. 

Most raptor migrants rely upon updrafts 

or thermal lift to aid in their passage, but 

the mighty Osprey just muscles along. You 

get a sense of the bird’s command of the 

sky when you watch them fish — hovering 

15-20 feet over the water for minutes on end. 

Then folding their wings back, they press their 

talons forward and enter the water. Adults 

emerge with a fish perhaps one time in three 

attempts. The crooked wings of Osprey may 

be an adaptation for absorbing the jolting 

impact of wings hitting water and may make 

it easier for Osprey to rise from the surface. 

If the birds escape the pilfering predilections 

of eagles, they carry their prey, head-first 

to a nearby perch and feast. The water just 

off Cape May Point is a favored fishing spot 

for Osprey and they sometimes hover over 

Bunker Pond. Come September the birds will 

be migrating high overhead so don’t dawdle. 

The time for seeing this highly specialized 

bird of prey is now.

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, support the Nature Center of Cape May ! 

Two decades ago, my mother introduced 

my kids to the Nature Center 

of Cape May. In summer camps, they 

fished and planted, fed and watered, 

sang and painted. My girls took to the 

slimy, feathery, furry creatures in and around 

the Cape May Harbor naturally. They came 

home with new friends, stories to share and 

some amusing misunderstandings, like a brief 

foray into fossil hunting that led to a collection 

of “dead stuff” and frightening level of interest 

from some persistent local turkey vultures. 

They also gained a new sense of wonder. 

The Nature Center’s summer camps offer 

kids a chance to take a deep dive into a new 

theme each week, learning about things like 

weather, aerodynamics and protective poisons, 

while also gaining an understanding of 

the harbor’s role in the local economy. The 

kids explore some truly gross stuff and learn 

to see it through a scientific lens, without it 

feeling too much like school. Beauty finds its 

place in the classes, too, and they brought 

home some fridge-worthy crafts, but my kids 

were always more interested in digging in 

the mud, feeding the octopus or tagging the 

butterflies than noticing how pretty they are. 

Adults can also learn something at the Nature 

Center, or the whole family can learn together.

In a town blessed with 

many worthy organizations, the Nature 

Center stands out with its ability to help all 

kinds of people connect to Cape May. With 

one-day beach cleanups and native plant 

sales, they make it easy to give a few hours, or 

to donate some plants from your garden. They 

embraced “microvolunteering” before it was a 

buzzword, while also welcoming committed 

volunteers — like artists, naturalists, teachers, 

gardeners, fishermen — who give lots of time. 

The Nature Center invites you to invest sweat 

equity, so it’s no longer “the” harbor, it’s “our” 

harbor. 

You can also invest your financial equity 

in the Nature Center’s mission. “Catch of 

Cape May — Garden Party Edition” is this 

year’s fundraiser on Sunday, July 18 from 11 

am to 1:30 pm. Tickets will be sold for tables 

in groups of four ($1000) or eight ($2000) and 

brunch will be served at your assigned table. 

There will be cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, music, 

speeches and an auction, likely featuring art, 

jewelry, gourmet treats and unusual experiences. 

Some auction items will be on display 

at the event, but you can also bid online. For

6/26: Restored Fire Truck Returns To Cape May Fire Department 

A 1928 American LaFrance has returned to the Cape May Fire Department where it will be on display in the fire department museum. The fire truck is 

returning after eight years of restoration with five consisting of a major mechanical overhaul. The restoration was paid for by the CMFD through years of 

fundraising and it is on display at the museum at 712 Franklin Avenue and admission is free. Pictured: Lieutenant Jeff Laag and members of the CMFD.

replacing them. They are more expensive 

now that the season is in full swing. Should I 

write asking them for the money? They never 

offered to replace them, just laughed. It is my 

husband’s brother and his new girlfriend so I 

can’t tell them they’re not welcome anymore

boy. He has settled in and is very happy 

and eager to learn. Newton is learning useful 

behavior cues and leash skills. His puppy 

behavior makes him a lively and fun companion. 

Newton has the potential to be a wonderful 

companion for a family that is willing to 

continue his training. 

VALI is a social, 65-pound boy who came 

to the shelter as a stray. He loves to lean in 

for petting and sometimes thinks he is a lap 

dog. Vali is calm in the yard and is learning to 

play with toys. He enjoys going on walks and 

his leash skills are improving every day. Vali 

would make a great companion to a family 

with older children. 

ODIE came to the shelter as a scared, stray 

boy and is slowly becoming a happy and active 

dog. It takes him some time to acclimate to 

new people, but once he is comfortable, he 

is affectionate and lovable. Odie enjoys long 

walks, and his leash skills are improving. He 

would be a loyal companion to a family with 

older children.
