their favorite music, their 

eyes light up. They 

start moving and 

sometimes singing. 

Edward Ortíz, better known as Ed Harvest (his artistic 

name) started his music career at the age of 4. Today he 

is 23 years old and his curriculum is already impressive. A 

young but mature boy with lots of plans and goals in his 

future. Edward plays the Saxophone, the flute, piano, the 

Oboe, guitar and bass! 

He is one of three siblings and the only musician in the 

family. “My father (Edwuard Ortíz) plays the guitar and my 

mother (Esther Almodovar) has a good ‘musical ear’, 

but that’s it,” he said and smiled. And definitely his 

success started very early in life when he participated 

and won 2nd place in an International Jazz Festival at 

Berkeley with the “Guest who Jazz Quartet”. This was 

a very important experience and definitely a stimulus 

in his music development. 

As of now, he studies Eclectic Music Therapy, works 

with elderly patients who have various types of dementia 

such as Alzheimer, among others things. He 

is a musical therapist. “We use music as a way to 

communicate and channel feelings and emotions of 

patients with different degrees of dementia. Music 

allows them to channel their emotions, calm them

and acquire different degrees of well-being and peace. 

It is a healing communication through music. Music allows 

them to reach good memories and past experiences 

translated in a calm and pleasant state of mind. Even if 

they don’t remember specific situations, the music transports 

them to good memories. The music is chosen according 

to the patient’s interests and history, many times 

helped by their family members. If the patient used to 

like rock, they use rock; if classical music, they use classical 

music. The results are amazing and moving, sometimes 

it even makes them talk again. Here we include

therapy. “This type of therapy approach has been studied 

since the First World War and the good part is that 

this approach doesn’t have negative side effects, on the 

contrary. 

Edward has great goals including pursuing his studies 

and pursuing a Master’s degree in Music Business and attending 

a program at the University of Berkeley University 

in Valencia, Spain. 

On the other hand, Edward released a single named 

“Keep it you” and another is coming this summer. 

His favorite music is rock from the 50’s to the present. 

Among his favorite musicians are: Eric Clapton, David 

Bowie and Mac Miller. s

Monkeys become 

more tolerant of others, 

even competitors, 

after a catastrophe 

For the June/July 2008 edition, exactly 13 years ago, I visited Cayo Santiago, better 

known as “Monkey Island,” for a special report. It was a hassle to get the permits. I had 

to get vaccinated, get lab work done, fill many papers, etc. But it’s worse! It’s one of 

the most fascinating experiences I’ve ever had (I went with the scientist in charge of the 

Island at that time). When we arrived at the Island, I must confess, my legs were shaking. 

So many monkeys surrounded us and some of them were big!!! In the beginning 

it was scary but, the scientist comforted me and gave me instructions: don’t look them 

in the eyes, and don’t get close to the babies since their mother and the clan could 

interpreted this as a threat and become aggressive. But once the initial shock was over, 

I was fascinated to observe their behavior and learn more about the studies and investigations 

that takes place on that small Island. Contrary to popular belief, these monkeys 

are used to study social behavior and habits. I was there for about 4 hours and if it is true 

that at the beginning, I was a little afraid…at the end of the day, I didn’t want to leave!!! 

It’s fascinating to observe them and appreciate their similarities with humans. 

Recently, I ran into this wonderful article published in “El País”, on of the most important 

newspapers from Spain. I wrote them and asked permission to translate the article 

and publish it in our magazine. The article, as you can read, is about the impact of Maria 

Hurricane in the behavior of Cayo Santiago’s monkeys. Amazing!! I hope you enjoy it as I 

did. I am including a link from a fascinating article in phys.org about how, after hurricane 

Maria, rhesus macaques in Puerto Rico sought out new social relationships.

noticed something peculiar among the inhabitants of 

a small Puerto Rican Island called Cayo Santiago, also 

known as the “Island of Monkeys.” Only a population of 

wild macaques, which have been studied in detail for decades, 

live there. After the hurricane, which wiped out a 

good part of the vegetation, an unexpected change in 

their behavior was observed: they seemed to spend less 

time with their usual circle, to dedicate it to acquaintances, 

strangers and even former competitors. 

After analyzing the data on the relationships of hundreds 

of these macaques from two different clans, scientists 

confirmed the finding. As the scientist Camille 

Testard explains, “We expected that the monkeys would 

use their closest allies to face the ecological devastation 

of the hurricane and, therefore, they would invest in their 

existing relationships as their relatives or best friends.” 

“Instead,” says this researcher from the University of 

Pennsylvania, “the monkeys expanded their social networks 

and the number of individuals with whom they tolerated 

sharing those limited resources.” 

Instead of retreating into isolation in the face of adversity, 

they decided to share with strangers. What’s the 

point of this? “Our best friends can give us many things. 

But sometimes, what we need is a social network where 

everyone is friendly enough,” indicates Testard, who 

leads a study in current biology that develops these observations. 

The quality and quantity of social relationships is a 

good way to predict health and mortality in many mammals, 

including humans. And the example of Cayo Santiago, 

according to this team, helps to answer a great 

pending question: what benefits do social relationships 

provide from the point of view of their evolution? “Natural 

disasters are a huge source of instability for humans 

and other animals. Social relationships, and in particular 

broad social tolerance, can be crucial to surviving these 

extreme environmental challenges,” stresses Testard. 

After the hurricane, vegetation was reduced by 63% 

(as seen in aerial images), leaving these monkeys without 

much of the necessary shade they use for protection. 

Normally, they take refuge from the sun, sharing space 

and activities with those close to them, but they began to 

groom themselves with less familiar individuals in order 

to avoid conflicts and to be able to enjoy the scarce and 

precious shade. The data did not allow them to quantify 

the reduction in aggression among macaques, but, according 

to Testard, “In a context of increased competition 

due to limited resources, the monkeys became more 

tolerant and friendly to each other, suggesting a less 

competition.” 

Not all relationships grew equally on Cayo Santiago. 

Monkeys that were socially isolated before the hurricane 

showed a greater increase in social interactions. Also, 

the females, who groomed males more, caused the social 

connections of the males to multiply: “This finding is 

consistent with the role of females in promoting group 

cohesion in some animal societies,” he points out in the 

study. To broaden their social networks, macaques tended 

to take an approach that humans understand well: befriending 

your friends’ friends, a common bond-forming 

mechanism throughout the animal kingdom. 

Social relationships, and in particular broad social tolerance, 

can be crucial to surviving these extreme environmental 

challenges. 

CAMILLE TESTAR, UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA 

The question that is most difficult for this group to 

answer is whether this tolerance in times of crisis has a 

collective utility beyond improving the prospects of each 

individual individually. In their study, they point out that 

the extension of social networks improves community integration, 

while focusing on strengthening already established 

ties “can lead to the fragmentation of the larger 

group due to the formation of multiple smaller cliques.” 

Testard believes that it is quite possible that the greater 

cohesion of the group as a whole after the crisis is only an 

unintended consequence. 

The study considers this natural experiment a good 

example of how to respond to the disasters that climate 

change will inevitably bring: “Our findings support the 

hypothesis that social support is an important mechanism 

that gregarious primates can implement to adapt 

to extreme environmental changes.” Is this also true for 

humans in the face of disasters such as the pandemic? 

“We”, replies Testard, “have also responded flexibly to 

the current crisis by altering our social networks. This social 

flexibility can be a characteristic common to many 

species of primates and can be a common characteristic 

of many species of primates and can help us to be resistant 

to extreme events”. s

I’ve known the Muñiz twins Naomi 

and Marina Muñiz since they were 

born. Actually, they are almost as old 

as our magazine. 

Naomi & Marina have strong and 

determined personalities; they are 

outspoken and mature. They grew 

up surrounded by the love lots of 

family and friends. I guess that gave 

them a lot of confidence and security. 

They are the daughters of Dra. 

Erica Sánchez and Nando Muñiz; 

granddaughters of my good friends 

Luis (Cuquito) Muñiz and Dibi Barletta; 

and nieces of my beloved friends 

Maribelle Muñiz & Juanjo Boschetti. 

I remember when they were younger, 

they would ask me to cover their 

birthday for the magazine and when 

I didn’t, they would ask me why I did 

not cover their birthday party! It was 

so funny!! Naomi and Marina are 

twins but not identical, as you can 

see, and each one has different personality 

and physical traits. Naomi 

is more outspoken and loves golf. 

Marina, the reserved and timid one, 

is passionate about tennis. But they 

are both warm, loving and self-confident--a 

product of a loving family 

and community. 

During this last year, they have 

lived in Palmas full time and gotten 

to love Palmas even more. We 

all wonder how their parents will be 

able to move back to San Juan and 

worst...how their grand parents will 

get used to the idea of not having 

them nearby. Their smiling faces 

will be missed at the golf and tennis 

center. Here’s a small summary of 

the story of two rising stars.

Naomi Muñiz Sánchez is 12 years old (13 in August), 

and is one of our golf rising stars. “It all started because 

when I was a little girl and I was riding in the golf 

cart near the golf courses, I saw golfers playing and that 

started to interest me. I was intrigued by the game, 

and I wondered what it would be like to play golf. One 

December I told my dad that I wanted to learn to play 

golf. Since we had some golf clubs at home, he and I 

started playing. Then, one day I told him that I wanted 

to take golf lessons. There we met Eduardito Figueroa, 

who has been my instructor ever since. First, I came 

once a month to take classes but then I became more 

interested in the game and I became more competitive, 

and now with the pandemic, as my parents moved 

to Palmas full time, I play almost every day,” says Naomi. 

And the reality is that she has already competed 

and won several tournaments. She already beats her father, 

Nando Muñiz and her grandfather Luis (Cuquito) 

Muñiz. “I don’t know how I’m going to live in San Juan

focused,”

again, it’s going to be very difficult, I’ll have to come a 

few days a week to play golf!!” she stated. When asked 

which is her favorite golf club, she answers that the driver 

because it gives her 160 yards! Better than many! To 

the question of what she has learned from golf, Naomi 

tells us “I have learned that I cannot let myself down, 

that I have to be positive and stay focused,” which applies 

to life itself. 

Eduardito Figueroa, who has been her teacher in the 

last year and a half, tells us, “I have been working with 

children for years, I lead the PR youth golf team and I 

love working with them. Golf is 75% mind control and 

30% technique. And this is true like life. The honesty 

and camaraderie of this sport teaches them many good 

things, including the discipline and sacrifice necessary to 

achieve anything in life. We will follow up!

Marina Muñiz Sánchez. Her passion is tennis. At the beginning 

of the year she started taking classes here with a 

group in Palmas and now in the summer she takes classes 

and does clinics. “I love tennis because it relaxes me”. 

Like Naomi, she too beats her father playing tennis. “He 

hits her the ball hard, but he doesn’t move,” she assures 

and laughs. Although she likes to play doubles she feels 

that in singles she can be more independent. She agrees 

that here in Palmas she has a great time, “In tennis we do 

matches, doubles, bollies, services ...” 

Marina recently participated in her first tournament and 

although she was very nervous she did very well. “The 

most difficult thing for me is the serve and volley, because 

I’m short. If they throw it too high, it makes it difficult.” 

But the reality is that we saw her playing and she hits 

the ball with impressive power. She advises any child who 

wants to learn to be calm on the court, concentrate and 

above all have a good time. Speaking of the pandemic, 

like her sister Naomi, she agrees that all this change has 

favored her since her parents decided to move full time 

to Palmas, which has allowed her to play almost every 

day. “Before the pandemic I practiced only once a week 

for half an hour!” 

Manuel Julbe, Palmas Athletic Club Director of the Junior 

Tennis Program tells us that Marina started with him 

about a year ago with private classes and that from the 

first moment he saw her he knew she was good and told 

her that if she would commit to the sport, I was going 

to see good results. And so it has been, Marina has already 

begun to see the results of her commitment and 

hard work. “She works hard from the moment she enters 

the court. She does not sit down, she is silently hitting the 

ball, sweats and does not complain. She already played 

her first tournament and won it! The first of many upcoming 

triumphs,” Julbe assured. s

As I begin my tenure as President of 

the Palmas del Mar Homeowners Association 

and of our Palmas community, I 

want to thank you for your enthusiastic 

support, your words of encouragement 

and your vote of confidence.With the 

assistance of all the community members, 

our Delegates, my fellow Board 

members and God, we will guide Palmas 

community through all the challenges 

and opportunities that may lie ahead.. 

Ours is a solid, vibrant and dynamic 

community. It is unique, beautiful and 

well taken care of. The envy of other 

communities in Puerto Rico. This has not come easy. It’s 

the product of hard work, foresight and dedication. It is 

a community that has proven its mettle time and time 

again in the past as we faced, endure and overcame extreme 

challenges such as Hurricane María. In the same 

fashion, our community rose to the challenge posed by 

Covid 19 and has become an example of resilience and 

of what can be achieved when pulling together, caring 

for each other and following the rules. Yet, here 

we are. Standing as the dream community, everyone 

seeks. There is no doubt that other difficult challenges 

will raise again; however, I am confident we are poised 

for success and will turn those challenges into opportunities 

to better ourselves 

It is my intention to continue to work very hard to sustain 

our community at its highest level of comfort for 

everyone, to continue to enhance our quality of life and 

our property values. Also, to work hard toward insuring 

the success of the Palmas Athletic Club and of the Palmas 

Academy both main pillars of our community. Additionally, 

one of the critical objectives of my presidency 

will be to maintain PHA as the prime mover and catalyst 

of Palmas to become the place of choice to invest, 

to live and to raise families. This objective goes hand 

in hand with our mission of enhancing our property 

values and improving our quality of life of the entire 

community and all of its components. 

Finally, I pledge to you that your Homeowners Association 

will continue to guide the community with the 

steady hand we have used to overcome the toughest

Erasmo Reyes, Esq. has been elected by the PHA 

Board of Directors as President of the Palmas del 

Mar Homeowners Association (PHA) replacing Dr. 

Sandra Gracia whose term came to an end at the 

conclusion of the 2021 Annual Meeting. Erasmo 

has been a long-time property owner of Palmas del 

Mar and a member of the PHA Board of Directors 

since April 2020. Also, he has been the President 

of the Palmas Plantation Homeowners Association, 

PHA member of the Delegates Committee, 

President of the Palmas del Mar Security Council, 

Secretary of the PHA Board, member of the PHA 

Executive Committee and member of several PHA 

committees. Erasmo is a practicing attorney who 

is married to Camille Rodriguez, Esq, and have two 

children, Estela and Alberto. Camille is currently the 

PR Undersecretary of Justice for Family and Minors

HURRICANE 

SEASON READINESS 

The hurricane season is here again (June 1st –November 

30th). In preparation for the hurricane season 

PHA has updated the community contingency plan for 

dealing with these emergencies and distributed copies 

of the plan to the presidents, PHA Delegates and administrators 

of regimes and residential areas throughout 

Palmas del Mar. Also, the plan is posted at the PHA 

website palmaspha.org. Please take time to review it 

since it becomes the Palmas community playbook 

when threatened by a hurricane or a tropical storm. 

Hurricane María taught us that is never too early to 

get ready and now is the time to begin your individual 

contingency preparations to ready your family for this 

potential emergency. Go over your preparation check 

list and preposition all those things you will need to 

cope with this type of event. Your emergency kit should 

include as a minimum: cash, medicine, fuel, non-perishable 

food, water, flashlight, batteries, battery operated 

radios, infant necessities, camera and film, pet 

supplies, toiletries, matches, etc. Don’t forget to keep 

your phone fully charged and the emergency numbers 

already pre-recorded or handy. Review insurance policies, 

take video/photos of your property and identify 

a safe location within your property for your family to 

huddle during impact. 

Your preparation and cooperation in the event of a 

hurricane emergency is a must. Don’t wait to the last 

minute to get ready – now is the best time! 

HANDLING 

MEDICAL 

EMERGENCIES 

During a medical emergency, time and the flow of 

information is absolutely critical. When a resident calls 

911 for a medical emergency they should take time 

to call or tell someone to call Palmas del Mar Security 

at 787-852-7745. Two things will happen as a result 

of this action. First, Palmas del Mar will dispatch a security 

patrol to the emergency site that could render 

first aid and emergency assistance if necessary. Security 

officers are trained and certified in CPR, use of defibrillators 

and use of first aid kits. Security patrols are 

equipped with a defibrillator and first aid kits. Second, 

Palmas del Mar Security will dispatch another patrol to 

the main entrance of Palmas to escort the ambulance 

to the emergency site upon arrival to preclude becoming 

lost or wasting precious time. 

Residents are encouraged to call the Palmas Security 

Dispatch at 787-852-7745 during any emergency. The 

Palmas dispatch will immediately contact the nearest 

paramedic unit located fire-station next to Palmas del 

Mar and and will summon any other emergency assistance 

that may be required such as the police, rescue or 

the fire department. Simultaneously, they will dispatch 

a security patrol to the emergency site and another to 

be read to escort the ambulance upon arrival. 

If for some reason such as a communications failure 

that may disable the Palmas Security Dispatch switchboard, 

you may try to contact the dispatch through 

the security phone alternate number 787-656-9550. 

This number is only activated during switchboard 

failures. Time is of essence. Call 911 and/or call 787- 

852-7745.

Today, our way of living in spaces has 

changed according to the activities we 

carry out and the places where we carry 

them out. It is not a secret at all that 

homes today are not just a place of refuge 

but also our space for rest, relaxation and, 

in the past few months with the pandemic, 

our educational place, work, and gym. 

The benefits of having a terrace 

TTo achieve a balance between the 

physical building of our homes and the 

environment, there must be a unification 

of the interior with the exterior. I have always 

been interested in what happens in 

outdoor spaces. I like to appreciate archi-

tectural spaces from the inside out and believe that the exterior 

space is an extension of the interior. Terraces have 

become an important space in houses, shopping centers, 

lodging places and places for food consumption (restaurants), 

since thanks to them we can meet in healthier environments. 

Terraces have evolved into meeting places to 

eat, exercise, study or simply socialize. 

The condition that forced us to stay in our homes because 

of the COVID-19 pandemic and, in some cases, the fear of 

going out on the streets, make these domestic spaces so 

much more valued. Confinement has led people to spend 

more time inside their homes and, after so many months in 

quarantine, it seems that some spaces are getting smaller 

and smaller, especially if there are children at home. 

Commonly we all have a place where most of the time we 

get to rest, sleep, wash and even work and exercise, this 

place is our home. Imagine doing all this during summer 

in the humidity and heat. The last thing you do is rest and 

relax. That is why many people prefer open rooms, spaces 

that we know as Terraces and open extensions of spaces 

as balconies. A terrace next to a room allows you to read 

a book and have coffee in the morning. A terrace located 

next to the living room allows you to expand the conviviality. 

Having a terrace next to the kitchen allows you to 

eat outside and enjoy the sunlight and the 

breeze. 

Terraces are a special area of houses. A 

space that communicates the interior-private 

world of the house with the outside 

world. 

In today’s industry, there are a variety of 

materials, new doors and window systems 

that facilitate the integration between the 

interior and exterior of a house in a safe 

and practical way. 

New flooring materials are that expand 

the alternatives for different uses are available. 

For example, you can have inside a floor tile with a 

polished finish, typical of an interior, and have the same tile 

on the terrace with an anti-slip finish that can even be taken 

to the surroundings of a swimming pool. 

There are also new types of thick and resistant ceramic 

slabs that can be used outdoors by placing them directly 

on the ground, as if they were pavers, combining them with 

indoor tiles. 

Highly effective security systems against hurricanes have 

been produced in doors and windows. Door systems that 

allow the entire interior space to be opened with minimal 

effort and integrated into the terrace. 

Rooftops are a variant of terraces but, usually larger. 

While terraces are usually particular to a house, rooftops 

are usually, in most cases, communal for the entire building.

The aim is to develop open-air living spaces that would 

bring nature into the house. During the last decades, 

the tendency to close up terraces became general. This 

made it possible to give more space to the interior of 

the residence. In recent times this trend has been reduced 

to treat them as one more space in the house. 

Plants, Awnings and Pergolas 

These are three basic elements of any terrace. In the 

case of Plants, it is most advisable to use easy-care species, 

orienting them, considering the hours of sunlight, 

and taking care of their height to prevent the wind from 

breaking their stems. Nowadays, organic is the healthiest. 

What better way to plant your own fruits or vegetables 

than on your terrace? This way you can have some 

foods grown on your own. Even just ornamental plants 

could give a fresh touch to the terrace and your home. 

An Awning is an essential element to avoid inclement 

weather. Those that give greater protection are those of 

micro-perforated fabric, which allow exterior and interior 

ventilation. Other types of awnings to use are those 

with sails and articulated ones. 

Pergolas let light through very well while creating 

shady spaces while helping to ventilate the area. These 

pergolas can be seen as a complement to the terraces. 

Usually followed by a covered terrace the floor extends 

into the outdoor patio. Placing the pergola in this area 

makes a transition from the covered part of the terrace 

to the uncovered area providing more shade without 

affecting ventilation. 

The furniture will depend on the environment you 

want to create and the available space. It will normally 

be made up seating furniture and one or more tables. 

The most common trend has been to use plastic, or aluminum 

furniture for its easy cleaning and cost, although 

if the terrace is understood as an exterior extension of 

the living room or dinning room, the furniture should 

follow the concept, in terms of style, of this. 

Advantages of a terrace 

A terrace is an ideal place to relax. Your quality of life 

can improve if you have a space in your home where 

you can sit and feel the sun and breeze while enjoying a 

moment of tranquility away from day-to-day problems. 

Today many people have been forced to work 

all day from their home office due to the pandemic. 

Having a terrace offers you the opportunity to go 

out with a laptop and work in the fresh air. With the 

light and correct decoration, you can increase creativity 

and make yourself much more productive. 

The terrace become a perfect place to enjoy gatherings 

with family and friends. With a table and a few 

chairs, you can create an ideal place to spend more quality 

time with your loved ones. It is also possible to eat 

in the fresh air on your terrace. It does not matter if you 

prefer to cook and then take the food out or use a BBQ. 

In conclusion, we must remember that when we have 

plans to build a terrace or any other expansion in our 

house, we must request a construction permit to comply 

with the codes and regulations of the construction activity 

in Puerto Rico. You should also request a construction 

permit from our Palmas del Mar Architect Review 

Board. This is important because these renovations and 

expansions increase the value of our property if they 

are legitimized with a construction permit. This way, 

later problems with the Permit Office are avoided.s

Do you know who in Palmas delivers pizza the fastest? Our junior high group, WyldLife, found 

the answer through a “Pizza Olympics” we recently hosted in our backyard. We phoned the 3 

most popular pizzerias in town and gave a 1st place prize (a spray-painted gold pizza cutter!) to 

the winner! 

In a world that gives some teenagers a bad rep, Young Life & WyldLife are bringing out the positive 

side of today’s youth and pointing them toward a hopeful future. We know the statistics and 

dangers teens face as they grow up in today’s world. Young Life helps kids make good decisions 

and encourages them to become leaders of character among their peers. 

Young Life models mentoring relationships and helps older students to use their influence in 

positive ways. 

A growing group of local high school and junior high students are actively involved in Young 

Life in Palmas del Mar. Each week they are filling the backyards of local homes with live music, 

messy games and silly skits. 

Through weekly meetings, small groups, summer camps (teens call it the “best week of their 

life”), weekend excursions and one-on-one time with an adult Young Life leader, leaders build 

unconditional relationships with teens. 

“For the first time in years I did not feel stressed, or anxiety, or alone. I felt like I had a family. So 

happy, and so loved!” “I got to meet new friends and people. I didn’t feel judged when saying the 

things I wanted to say. I felt listened to, and heard.” “I felt the judgment and stress of the world 

leave me and I felt free and loved.” 

This is being said again and again as we had the privilege to walk alongside the awesome 

teens of our community who come from all economic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds. 

This September 2021, Young Life Palmas del Mar will be turning 5! We are excited about 

reopening chapters in San Juan, Las Piedras and soon in Dorado, where this program started 

twelve years ago. Some of our new college-age volunteers are those same teenagers who were 

once part of the program when they were in high school. It is exciting to see many college-age 

kids mentoring others, serving them unconditionally. 

Young Life is a world-class organization for adolescents. Our staff and volunteers enter the 

world of kids, focusing on what matters to them—fun, adventure, friendship and a sense of significance. 

Young Life exists in our Palmas del Mar community because of caring adults who invite and

When the temperature rises in 

Puerto Rico, we see the sun in all its 

glory, the beautiful beaches and we 

look at the date and say “Summer is 

here!” It also marks the start of PAC’S 

annual golf and tennis Summer Program 

for kids and adults in Palmas! 

First of all, I ask myself: Luis, how can 

you describe the Summer Program 

in just one phrase? “Shut off your 

mind and focus on what you are here 

for… TO HAVE FUN” --that is what 

it’s all about. The Palmas del Mar tennis 

center has it all. We have tennis 

programs all summer long that are 

available for children from 4-18 years 

old and adult programs as well. This 

community has grown a lot. We 

see more new folks joining 

our community, and it’s just 

so wonderful to see all the 

tennis courts full most of 

the time and the summer 

programs full, its just another 

way of saying thank you 

for the confidence given to our 

team. This is just the beginning of 

making the Palmas Athletic Club tennis 

center the best in the Caribbean, 

and as I said before, we achieve that 

by making each player feel like they 

are home. These past weeks, the 

Junior Summer Program has been 

a great success and our intention is

The name of the boat was a mutual 

agreement between the couple. 

It is a Lagoon Catamaran, so they 

liked the idea, of Laguna. 

They traveled from Australia, to 

South Carolina, where they bought 

the Catamaran. 

As a family, they had been experiencing 

the pleasure of sailing 

through the Caribbean and decided 

to stay in Granada for a while. After 

leaving Granada, they wanted 

to stop in Puerto Rico. Fajardo was 

completely full and with a waiting 

list. They soon contacted Palmas 

Del Mar’s Facebook page asking for 

help and if someone could recommend 

then a marina or place to go. 

I saw the message and worried 

about it; when a call for help comes 

from a navigating boat in the ocean, 

it’s usually a serious situation. 

The next morning, I woke up very 

early thinking about it and called the 

marina office to notify the situation. 

The good news was that they were 

already being helped. Their boat’s 

tank was getting filled with diesel, 

and a generous neighbor from Seascape, 

Palmas Del Mar, offered the 

use of their dock, since at the time, 

there weren’t spots available for a 

boat that size. 

It’s very important to emphasize 

the good heart of the people on 

Palmas-- offering a helping hand to 

a family in need! 

That first night they enjoyed the 

music at Chinchos in the comfort of 

their Catamaran and had a great rest 

(which hadn’t happened in months). 

They have already visited the Dominican 

Republic, La Parguera, Bio 

Bay, Gilligan’s Island, Ponce, and Patillas.... 

The family spent 2 weeks in Puerto 

Rico. 

They feel lucky and grateful for the 

helping hand from the Marina’s office 

and the generosity of the family 

from Palmas. They feel the people of 

Palmas Del Mar, Puerto Rico are over 

the top! So many generous people 

and helping hands came to offer their 

help. They also had the opportunity 

to get the Covid 19 vaccine in Ponce 

(at that time, it wasn’t available in 

Australia). They love the weather in 

the Caribbean and Puerto Rico. 

They visited Las Playas national water 

slide here in Puerto Rico and El 

Yunque, Rainforest. 

They enjoy sailing, and work on 

repairs when necessary. Since it’s a 

European boat, it’s not that easy to 

order parts, etc... 

The next stop is Culebrita, Puerto 

Rico. 

Sailing has given an important 

sense of accomplishment for the entire 

family, David believes it is a great 

way to grow through new experiences, 

and the value of creating new 

memories! 

A way to describe his feelings 

throughout sailing and life, is 

“Have a dream. When you write it 

down, it becomes a goal; you break 

it into steps, then it becomes a plan... 

and a dream becomes reality”

The experience of living in contact with the ocean, and nature itself--visiting new places, great 

adventures…it’s fascinating! It’s very important to count on people and the right resources to 

make your journey safe and pleasant.... I often say, “safety first, and then the fun.” 

It’s been a great pleasure to be in contact with nature and the ocean... “A dream come true!” 

My whole life has been around the ocean, nature, boats, etc... now I’m learning how everything 

works and how to use it. 

The community of boaters is diverse! People come from all over the world, all walks of 

life--different ages, careers, knowledge and experiences to share. 

I love and respect the people that work at The Yacht Club Marina, at Palmas Del Mar, Humacao 

Puerto Rico, there is a sense of an extended family. 

Great memories prevail in my soul of every person I have met and shared experiences with! 

This section might be a little different this time since during the month of July I’m celebrating 

my birthday. I want to use this opportunity to thank the people that make possible the good, 

safe and great environment at the marina neighborhood. Cheers to all the people that have

OUT OF BOREDOM?

While the world was under full lockdown during the pandemic, 

Valerie Van Aalst used that time of isolation and created something 

amazing. She quit her 9 to 5 job, moved to Palmas del Mar and started 

a jewelry business. 

Valerie is a 26-year-old woman born and raised in Aguadilla. While 

working in a surf shop called Surf Zone, she dreamed of one day 

becoming a jewelry maker. After watching “how to” videos on YouTube, 

the dream became a reality. In 2019, she began selling her designs at 

Art Walk in Aguadilla. 

But then, the Coronavirus took over and social gatherings were no 

more. Yet, that did not stop Valerie from selling her work. She decided 

to take her business online and it blew up. Her big break came when 

she created an account on the famous video sharing app, “TikTok”. 

“I saw that a lot of businesses where doing their advertising through 

there so I decided to do the same,” said Van Aalst. 

Before Valerie uploaded her first video, she started making jewelry 

designs inspired by the animated TV show, Avatar: The Last Airbender. 

The show is about a world that is divided into four nations that represent 

the natural elements. Her first two pieces were colored blue and red 

which she later noticed resembled the water and fire nation portrayed 

in the show. 

The first video Valerie posted on TikTok was her talking to the camera 

and explaining what the jewelry brand was all about. She also asked 

the public if they would be interested in purchasing her work. Well, 

that video now has 1.1 million views. It’s safe to say her audience was 

more than intrigued. 

Valerie currently has 39.2K followers on TikTok and 9,376 followers on 

Instagram. “Through the Avatar fandom, everyone started discovering 

me on TikTok,” Van Aalst said. 

That first video was the match that sparked her first online orders. 

Most of her customers are from Germany, Sweden, France and the 

United States. Her most popular necklace right now is the one inspired 

by the Avatar Ang. She has sold over 1,000 of them. 

Although her popularity grew quickly through TikTok, Valerie faced a 

lot of challenges as a new small business owner. 

“Figuring out my branding and personal style was my biggest 

challenge,” said Van Aalst. “I have a lot of interests and I change my 

mind a lot.” But once she got the hang of it, Valerie was able to put that 

creativity to work. 

After the success of the Avatar collection, Valerie started to branch out 

and create new jewelry designs. Some of the new collections include, 

Queen Mary inspired chokers, anklets, earrings, Aphrodite series and 

bracelets. 

“I’ve always wanted to branch out,” said Van Aalst. “I have so many 

ideas that I can’t wait to create.” 

Palmas del Mar gave her the peace and inspiration needed for 

creation but once the full lockdown was lifted and her business took 

off, Valerie decided to go back to her roots on the west side. She moved 

back to Aguadilla and opened a jewelry studio. With the amount of

In the future, Valerie wants to turn her small business into a 

multimillion-dollar jewelry industry. She also wants it to be a sustainable 

and ethical business with biodegradable packaging. 

If you or anyone you know is planning to open a small business, 

Valerie’s advice is to have a clear business plan and know your target 

audience. This is important because you need to know who you’re 

creating content for and how to effectively catch their attention. 

What started as a horrible 2020, turned into a life changing year for 

Valerie. She is grateful of the time she had to figure out her next career 

move. 

“For me, the pandemic was a blessing in disguise,” said Van Alast. “It 

gave me time to create myself.”

Hurricane season is upon us once more and we want to remind you of 

the importance of making sure all your policies are in order. Once a storm 

watch is issued, insurance companies typically close markets and do not 

subscribe new policies or allow changes to be made to existing ones. 

This is why if you have done changes to your property, whether they are 

improvements or changes to the structure of your home, got some new 

expensive furniture, or bought a new car, it is of utmost importance that 

you report it to your insurance representative to have them update your 

policy. 

Now then, once the arrival of an atmospheric system is imminent, we 

recommend that you take the following steps: 

• Install and/or close storm shutters and secure them in place 

• Store patio or terrace furniture inside of your property 

• Take photos of your property inside and out before to 

document your preparation 

• Be sure to clean canals, drains, etc. that may promote water buildup 

• Prepare in advance an inventory of your property with its values 

We remind you that within the conditions contained in your policy, there 

are some responsibilities that you, as an insured, have to comply with 

after a loss. Not only do you have to promptly communicate the sustained 

losses, but also you need to protect the property from additional damage, 

keep an accurate record of repair expenses, show evidence of the 

damaged property as the company asks you to (so you should not throw 

any of it away). Failure to do so may affect your claim or even, have the 

company deny you coverage. 

If you live in an apartment, it is important that you recognize what is not 

included in your contents coverage (personal property). This coverage 

covers your furniture, appliances, clothing, etc. While your apartment’s 

master policy covers the structure, if your condo’s policy is Barewall, 

your property attached to the walls is not covered by that policy. It is up 

to you to get an HO-6 policy, designed specifically for these purposes. 

The HO-6 covers your property that is attached to walls and floors, such 

as: kitchen cabinets, counters, toilets, videts, bathtubs, vanities, closets 

and shelving, floor tiles, etc. 

You should also know that if you have done renovations to the property 

attached to the walls in your apartment, you should inform your insurance 

representative to cover them under Improvements and Betterments insurance, 

which is different from the HO-6 policy mentioned before. 

The right preparations and preventions can be vital to lessen you losses 

and make your claim process a quick and fair one. If we all do our part, we

Thanks to the 4 young people who joined us today 

to clean the beach and to the Christ Pennock team 

for their support and coordination. They were Raúl Andrés 

and Sebastian Maldonado and Ilan Soler Navarro 

and Almudena Soler Navarro. The reality is that the 

beach was almost clean (apart from sargassum, which 

is another more complex problem). We found many 

small pieces of plastic, straws and removers (which 

should already be prohibited), water bottles and caps 

(also unnecessary since the quality of our water is adequate.) 

And many tiny fragments of plastic that the 

sea brings.

With the increasing short rental 

business in all of its formalities, we 

have witnessed and documented an 

increase in the violation of our community 

standards and the specific restrictions 

meant to protect the peace 

and tranquility of every resident and 

their right to enjoy the comforts of 

their private property. Accordingly, 

although the community-wide 

standards and restrictions apply to 

everyone in our community, specifically, 

PHA has served notice to all 

property owners that, as authorized 

in our Restrictive Covenants, property 

owners whose rented 

properties incur in such 

violations will receive an 

immediate $500 fine 

and will be subject 

to additional penalties 

should additional 

violations 

occur. Palmas del 

Mar security will respond to violation 

calls (787-852-7745), will 

intervene with violators and will document 

such incidents. Property owners 

will be notified of these incidents 

and fines being imposed as a result. 

Fines will be reflected in the PHA 

property assessment account and 

referred for legal action if unpaid 

within a specified timeframe.

Life brings experiences that often 

result in opportunities with positive 

outcomes. For Haciendas de Palmas, 

this was the result of the recovery 

efforts after hurricane Maria. As the 

Association undertook the project of 

repairing roofs, fixing damages and 

painting buildings, the thought of a 

change of image was considered and 

pursued. Luckily, funding was available 

from the money paid by the insurance 

company from the post-hurricane 

claim. In spite of a delayed 

start, due to the time consumed in 

the claim process and to factors affecting 

start of project, among others, 

four years later we are approaching 

the final phase of the project. 

The project was kicked off in 2019 

by requesting proposals from various 

contractors. Once these proposals 

were evaluated, the contractor was 

selected based on experience, reliability, 

reputation, quality of work 

and offerings of warranties. Alignment 

with the assigned budget was 

also a factor and negotiation discussions 

were key in the selection process. 

Various brands of paints were 

considered and evaluation of their 

quality, warranties and durability was 

undertaken before completing the 

paint brand selection. Similar light 

earthy colors were desired for the 

buildings but with a change in the 

accent color to enhance the image of 

the condominium. This was pursued 

and after evaluation of options and 

approval of the color selection by the 

Association, the PHA ARB approval 

was obtained. So at last the project 

took off! 

The actual physical work on the 

buildings started during the summer 

of 2020 after delays due to the 

COVID pandemic. The project has 

progressed well. The contractor has 

been responsible and committed to 

the project. The involvement of an 

engineer hired by the Association, to 

inspect the job and report back, has 

been key to success. This allowed

regular, professional and consistent 

supervision of the project as it progressed. 

The engineer made recommendations 

and served as the eyes 

of the Association. This proved to 

be an excellent approach to ensure 

proper project flow and completion 

as expected and in the interest of the 

condominium. 

At present, the project is 90 % 

complete and the remaining pending 

items are scheduled to be completed 

within the next month. The 

Board of Directors, working as a collaborative 

team, has been a success 

factor in the project. The patience 

and cooperation throughout the 

project, of the unit owners and residents, 

is appreciated and has also 

been key to success.

Staying in the present in my humble opinion is the 

most difficult component of golf, you must keep your 

concentration for 18 holes, usually for 4 hours when 

playing in a foursome and must be conscious in every 

moment, even when you are not hitting the ball. 

You have numerous distractions that will take you out 

of that present, for instance your AM radio partner that 

won’t shut up, the Drama Queen that is always in a Greek 

tragedy and then he shoots an 84, and the sprinter that 

thinks that he is playing by himself and if you allow him 

he will finish the 18 holes by himself and last but not 

least, the one that takes the prize!!! The “Salsero” that

Hoping that everything is well and that you are enjoying 

and squeezing as many rounds of golf as possible. 

We have been having a very unusual wet summer which 

has made playing impossible sometimes, but we must 

see the positive side of all this raining; no fires and no 

drought and everything is bright green, including our 

golf courses. 

This last week Palmas was the host of the PRGA Junior 

Island Championship 2021 in the Flamboyan course and 

the Juniors had their hands full, walking three days on 

a very long wet course. I take my hat off to them taking 

in consideration that they have had to find the strength 

and discipline to grind it out. At least on the third day 

the sun came out and they were able to finish the tournament 

on a positive note, it was like a compensation 

for their efforts. That is why I always say golf is like life, 

you put in the hard work and good things will happen.

The trend of the “stay-at-home” look is over. Now is the time to put away those weekly leggings 

and try on a new outfit. Finally, the world is opening up again. It’s the perfect moment to get creative 

with your style. And who better to guide us through this fashion reawakening than our very 

own Sandrysabel Ortíz Garcia. 

Fashion has always been a part of Sandrysabel’s life. It all started 

with her grandmother, Aida Garcia, who used to sew her own 

clothes. Aida and her Husband, Carlos Garcia, joined Palmas del 

Mar in the 80’s. Her mother, Sandra Garcia, was also very fashion forward. 

It’s easy to see how the stylish gene was passed on through 

generations. 

“I was born into a fashion loving household,” said Ortíz. 

Sandrysabel’s fashion has evolved during the years. In her 

teenage phase, she considered herself to be a tomboy. 

She loved rocking sneakers. But as she matured, so 

did her style. Sandrysabel came in touch with her 

elegant and feminine side. 

“ I would describe my style now to be 

like Blair Waldorf: classic, preppy and 

polished,” said Ortíz. 

She also describes her fashion as 

“chameleon chic”. Sandrysabel dresses 

accordingly to the event or place she is 

attending. For example, if she is going to a hacienda, 

she will dress the part and add her own twist 

to it, calling it: “hacienda chic”. 

A great example of a product that can create different 

looks depending on your style preference is Sandrysabel’s: 

Heel Condoms. After working in 

wall street and in a finance company in 

Puerto Rico, she decided to produce 

a fashion item that wasn’t in 

the market yet. Heel Condoms 

are shoe accessories that 

change the look of your 

heel. The fashion item was 

very successful locally and 

internationally. 

Her fashion emporium 

didn’t stop there. In 2019, 

Sandrysabel started an online 

curated shop: www.sandrysabel. 

com. 

“Everyone would say I have good taste 

so I decided to use my fashion skills and create 

a shop where I get to choose the items,” 

said Ortíz, “It’s a one stop shop for people who 

are looking to dress different and make a statement 

with their clothes.” 

The website was launched two years ago on her birthday. It was supposed to only be 

up for a month but it had such a good outcome that she kept it up. Sandrysabel is replenishing 

the website with new items every month. She will also be having a new collection 

of heel condoms on the site very soon.

to find stylish clothing to wear here 

in Palmas del Mar. According to Sandrysabel, 

the best way to describe 

the "Palmas style" 

is “resort-polished 

chic”. You can wear 

a maxi dress, with 

a big hat and sunglasses.

In the last few weeks, we have noticed a considerable 

increase of private and rental golf carts, walkers, joggers, 

bike riders, etc. entering PAC Golf Courses to ride/run 

along the golf cart paths, in spite of prominently posted 

signs forbidding trespassing. 

For safety reasons, the use of the golf cart paths on the 

golf courses is reserved exclusively for playing golfers. A 

golf ball can travel more than 100 mph and could cause 

severe damage to those who may be unaware of a golfer 

having played a shot and getting hit by the golf ball. 

PAC and PHA have implemented an awareness campaign 

to discourage trespassers from riding private and 

rental golf carts, walkers, joggers, bike riders, etc. entering 

PAC Golf Courses. PAC will install proper signage 

and a surveillance system to identify trespassers and apply 

the corresponding sanctions, which are currently set

giving drawing workshops in Palmas to a 

group of women as a way to overcome the 

days during the pandemic and learn the art

The friendship

When it comes to having 

an excuse for a get together, 

Palmas is the perfect 

place. This “tournament” 

was planned in short notice 

and everyone was 

immediately notified and 

a trophy was improvised. 

Obviously... a tournament 

needs fans to applaud and 

cheer, so friends and family 

of the players were invited 

and the center court (this 

is the main court in front 

of Volea) was reserved to 

have more visibility of the 

game and at the same 

time to be able to eat and 

drink while watching. The 

game was very close and 

the result (although expected) 

was not a beating.

very close second place 

was Luis M Rosado and 

Luis Collazo. Attendance 

was excellent and, as you 

can see from the photos, 

we had a great time. Do

Many things have happened during these last three months. The most important 

one, that life has gotten close to being “normal”, at least for those of 

us that have been vaccinated. Some people have even ventured to travel. 

Not me! I am still feeling conservative. The farthest I have been to is Culebra, 

which by the way, I enjoyed very much. Other than that, I have been here in 

our paradise...Palmas del Mar. How fortunate we have been to spend a Pandemic in a place like 

Palmas! Just the daily walks are a big relief! Not to mention the different gatherings in family and 

friends’ houses and our Palmas’ restaurants that kept serving us with a lot of effort and sacrifice. 

It’s been hard for them and still is with only a 50% of occupancy (as per the day of this closing 

edition). Another important event during these three months is that I arrived at the 7th floor!! 

Yes, I turned 70 and I celebrated it throughout the month surrounded by my family and good 

friends. It’s a milestone and it makes you reflect about life so far--what have you accomplished, 

what is pending, and what will need to be pending until further life (like jumping from a plane 

in a parachute). In my case, I can’t complain. I have lived a full life. Not perfect but one full of joy 

and love. I have a wonderful family, an incredible and marvelous daughter (my best legacy) and 

a lot of really good and long-lasting friends that I treasure and love. I follow my heart wherever 

it takes me (sometimes not to good places but that’s life). Actually, it was my heart that brought 

me to Palmas del Mar 15 years ago. Some of my San Juan friends and some family members 

thought I wouldn’t last much here, but they were wrong! I’m still here and could not think of a 

better place to live!!! Yes!! I Love Palmas!! My heart was right!!! s
