About Us

HANDMADE

The Pie Crew serves handmade savoury pies, born

and made in Pretoria!

We offer a modern interpretation of the classic

South-African-style savoury pie

(known as a garage pie).

We make all of our pies from scratch, handmade,

using only natural ingredients with nothing weird,

that-you-can’t-pronounce added. This includes using

only the best quality beef, chicken and vegetables,

all enveloped in a dangerously delicious crust.

The Pie Crew made history to be

the rst handmade pie company to be in retail &

we will also be the rst company to create a Low-Gi

pastry.

Why we started The Pie Crew...

We shared a love for pies following years

living in South-Africa — we couldn't nd

a delicious pie in the city

with great avour and an amazing crust.

After much discussion, over many cappuccinos ,

we nally decided to go for it.

Following many months of making and

eating (literally) hundreds of pies,

we were able to create the pies we

had always been craving.

What Is Low-Gi

The Glycemic Index (Gi) is a tool

that measures how carbohydrates

affect blood glucose levels. It

then ranks the quality of

carbohydrates based on this

score.

Carbohydrates are an essential

part of our diet since they provide

fuel for the brain, most other

organs and muscles during

exercise. However, not all

carbohydrate foods are equal.

High Gi carbohydrates cause

blood sugar levels to spike and

then crash, whereas low Gi foods

are digested and absorbed more

slowly. This slow release of glucose

into the bloodstream is proven to

be much more beneficial for the

body – from improving energy

levels to managing weight,

diabetes and other health


How the process works.

Creating Phase

We have developed and improved

our already proven recipes to create

our perfect Low-Gi pastry.

Testing Phase

This is where we are at this point in

time. The testing involves:

-Composition of product

-Sustainability of product

-Quality value

-Longevity (freeze time)

-Retail Packaging (pies & pastry)

Register with GIFSA:

Submit product:

They send it to their lab who does the

testing. They take 50g of reconstituted

pie, and give it to 12-14 people (all in

one lab), and measure their blood

glucose levels every 15min up to 2

hours to see the effect of the pie on

the blood glucose levels.

After we have perfected our Low-Gi

Pastry we can start to roll out under the
