Samantha Weller and Maria Pio cut<br />
their way through atwohourcompetition<br />
duringthe fifth and finalheat in anational<br />
series to find NewZealand’s top butchers.<br />
Samantha, aged27, won the Pact<br />
Packaging Young Butcher of the Year<br />
category,while Maria claimed first spot in<br />
theANZCO Foods Butcher Apprenticeof<br />
theYear category.<br />
Butchers fromacross the upper South<br />
Island took partinthe competition at Ara<br />
Instituteof<strong>Canterbury</strong> last Saturday to<br />
find grand finalists from the region.<br />
Samantha is no stranger to<br />
competitions, winning the Young Butcher<br />
of the Year title last year. It is her sixth<br />
time competing.<br />
‘‘Iwant the grand title so badly ithas<br />
been my goal since Istartedcompeting,<br />
andismybiggest goal for this year,’’ she<br />
says.<br />
Shecreditsher win to hours of practice,<br />
mentalpreparation and changingupher<br />
displayfrom previous years.<br />
‘‘This year Ibrought adifferent level of<br />
skill and creativity to the competition.<br />
‘‘Ichanged up my seasoningsand cuts so<br />
that my displaywas different.<br />
‘‘In particularIlove my pastry products<br />
Ithinkthey bring abit of class and<br />
uniqueness to my display.’’<br />
Samantha has beenaqualified butcher<br />
forthree years.<br />
Maria is in her thirdyear as an<br />
apprentice and attributes her success to<br />
thesupport and mentorsshe had during<br />
this time.<br />
‘‘Ifeel very proud of what Ihave<br />
achieved in my career so far,’’she says.<br />
‘‘Iamsohappytohave an amazing team<br />
behind me to support me.’’<br />
Maria thinks hercreativity is what set<br />
herapart and helped her win on the day.<br />
‘‘Ilike to play aroundwith flavours and<br />
ingredientsand to look at themeat and<br />
