and geriatric
At our hospital we put your safety first in a COVID-19 secure environment. We have a dedicated team of
experts you can trust, offering a range of specialities and award-winning healthcare that gives you flexible
ways to pay. Because we understand the need and importance for both general and geriatric medicine, we
caught up with Dr Mashkur Khan, our Consultant Physician, who answers some key questions you may have.
What is general medicine?
General medicine is the branch of holistic medicine
which looks at the whole patient from head to toe. This
speciality looks at the person, rather than the disease.
What are your top tips for managing the common
conditions you see and treat?
1
Early assessment and diagnosis can lead to both
better treatment and better prevention of diseases
What is geriatric medicine?
Geriatric medicine deals with common diseases in
the ageing population. A geriatrician will carry out a
comprehensive geriatric assessment. They will look at
the medical, psychological, social and emotional
aspects of a patient and deal with them from a
functional point of view.
2
3
Age itself is not a disease. Someone having problems
should be seen by a specialist, so their condition can
be improved. This will enhance their independence
and help them to enjoy life to the maximum
Often geriatricians are used to seeing atypical
symptoms and anything that is out of the ordinary
should be looked at by a specialist at an early stage.
