National Night Out<br />

National Night Out is a chance for residents<br />

and first responders to get to know<br />

each other in a family-friendly setting.<br />

• Lake Choctaw: This year’s events at<br />

Lake Choctaw will take place from 5 to 9<br />

p.m. Aug. 3 at the lake beach, 2875 Oneida<br />

Dr., London. The bands Counterpoint and<br />

Rendition will perform. Medflight will land<br />

around 6 p.m., firemen will conduct a Jaws<br />

of Life demonstration, the Delaware County<br />

Sheriff’s Office will have a sheriff’s horse on<br />

site, and the Ohio State Highway Patrol’s<br />

K9 unit will make an appearance. Free food,<br />

bounce houses, and access to the beach for<br />

swimming are planned, as well.<br />

• London: London’s events are set for 5:30<br />

to 7:30 p.m. Aug. 3 at Cowling Park. Visitors<br />

can talk to first responders and get closeup<br />

looks at their vehicles. Ygor, the city’s K9 officer,<br />

will be there. Free food and drinks, contests,<br />

and door prizes are planned.<br />

Public Employee Retirees<br />

Public Employee Retirees of Fayette and<br />

<strong>Madison</strong> Counties will resume meetings on<br />

<strong>July</strong> 28 at 12:30 p.m. in the conference room<br />

at the Fayette County Commission on Aging,<br />

1179 S. Elm St., Washington Court House.<br />

Masks must be worn until entering the conference<br />

room. Bonnie Mitchell with the PERI<br />

Columbus office will speak. Members who<br />

wish to have lunch at 11:30 a.m. must call<br />

the Commission on Aging for reservations by<br />

<strong>July</strong> 27, (740) 335-2159. Members must<br />

wear masks upon entering the building and<br />

until seated. Retired PERS employees and<br />

any recently retired are welcome.<br />

Cornhole Tournament<br />

The Merri Mac Park Miracle group is<br />

hosting a double elimination cornhole tournament<br />

at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 6 at the London<br />

Rhythm & Rib Fest. The entry fee is $40 per<br />

team. Cash prizes go to the top teams: first<br />

place, $400; second place, $200; third place,<br />

$100. Sign-ups are 5-6 p.m. Brackets are<br />

drawn at 6:15. Proceeds go toward improvements<br />

at Merri Mac Park in London.<br />

<strong>Madison</strong> County Senior Center<br />

<strong>Madison</strong> County Senior Citizens Center<br />

cafe is open to all ages, Monday-Friday,<br />

Fish Fries<br />

American Legion Post 201 in West Jefferson<br />

is offering a fish fry on the first and third<br />

Fridays of each month through October.<br />

Items include: fish and fries, $6; fish sandwich,<br />

$5; fries only, $1.50; cole slaw, $1;<br />

baked beans, $1; and soda, $1. Hours are 4-7<br />

p.m. Carryout and dine-in options available.<br />

HBMLibrary<br />

Hurt-Battelle Memorial Library, 270<br />

Lilly Chapel Rd., West Jefferson, offers the<br />

• Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle Celebration.<br />

10:30 a.m. <strong>July</strong> 30 at Westwood Park.<br />

The program features games, a food truck,<br />

face painting and more. The fun will last<br />

about three hours.<br />

• Summer Reading Completion Celebration.<br />

The Columbus Zoo will be on hand for<br />

the celebration set for 1 p.m. <strong>July</strong> 31 at the<br />

West Jefferson Community Center. To receive<br />

an entry ticket, participants must turn<br />

in their summer reading tracking sheets by<br />

<strong>July</strong> 30. Those attending the celebration<br />

must present an entry ticket unless they are<br />

accompanying a child who is younger than<br />

11 years old who has an entry ticket.<br />

• School Supplies Giveaway. Donate<br />

school supplies for West Jefferson students<br />

in grades K-5 at the library or Dollar General.<br />

The giveaway is set for Aug. 9 at the library,<br />

10 a.m.-7 p.m., while supplies last.<br />

Students must be present to pick up supplies.<br />

• Look to the Stars. The library will have<br />

a portable planetarium, a NASA engineering<br />

lab, and rocketry stations to explore at<br />

10 a.m. Aug. 14 at the West Jefferson Community<br />

Center. The program is open to children<br />

ages 5-18. Registration is required;<br />

capacity is limited to 60. Each child will receive<br />

a celestron telescope to take home.<br />

Mount Sterling Library<br />

Mount Sterling Public Library is located<br />

The library is open with regular hours and<br />

continues to offer curbside pickup.<br />

• Tails & Tales Wildlife with Ohio Nature<br />

Education. All ages are welcome to this program<br />

set for <strong>July</strong> 27 at 6:30 p.m. in the library’s<br />

lower level community room.<br />

• Preschool Early Literacy Initiative.<br />

Stop by the library for a list of 100 books to<br />

read to your children before they enter<br />

kindergarten. Children who complete the<br />

list receive a trophy and certificate and have<br />

their picture taken. All of the books are<br />

available at the library.<br />

<strong>Madison</strong>-Plains golf tryouts<br />

For any <strong>Madison</strong>-Plains High School boy<br />

or girl interested in trying out for the golf<br />

teams, practice begins at 7 a.m. Aug. 2 at<br />

the Locust Hills Golf Course. Bring clubs<br />

and paperwork. Practice should wrap up<br />

around 10:30 a.m.
