On July 15, Boy Scout Troop 412 members
(from left to right) Parker Underhill,
Andrew O’Bryan, Nathan O’Bryan,
Hayden Young and Logan Stanley joined
a crowd of hundreds as they lined the
streets of Grove City to pay homage to
PFC Noah Porter of the 75th Ranger
Regiment in the U.S. Army. Though many
in the crowd did not know Porter, a 2016
graduate of Grove City High School,
they said they wanted to honor his service
to this country as well as his life
that was cut short as a result of a motor
vehicle accident in Tennessee. The tribute
was organized by Dorothy Long, the
mother of Porter’s best friend Jacob
Bates. She said when she shared the
time his first call would be taken via
police escort to the Schoedinger Norris
Funeral Home for final burial preparations,
she did not expect so many people
to show up. “The response from this
community has been beyond anything I
could have imagined,” said Long. She
said she will fondly remember Porter’s
smile, his humor, and his and Jacob’s
ability to always get caught sneaking
out of the basement door at night as
teenagers. Porter was buried on July 17
with Full Military Honors. Donations in
his memory can be made to the Lead the
Way Fund of the 75th Ranger Regiment
YMCA submits
termination notice
By Dedra Cordle
Staff Writer
When village of Urbancrest Mayor
Joseph Barnes Sr. was told that the YMCA
of Central Ohio would cease recreational
programming at the Vaughn E. Hairston
location due to financial hardship caused
by prolonged COVID-19 restrictions, he
questioned whether the association could
unilaterally make that decision without
being in breach of a management agreement
reached between the parties in 2018.
According to Barnes, there is a clause in
the management agreement under the
‘term and termination’ section that states
a written notice of intention to terminate
the contract would need to be delivered to
either party should that decision be made.
He stated his belief earlier this month
that the decision to not offer recreational
programming for the members at the center
amounted to a termination of the contract
without the written notification.
VILLAGE YMCA
Continued from page 1
“We have not received anything (in writing) at this
time,” he said during an interview on July 2. “So, as far
as I am concerned, their decision to not provide programming
puts them into breach of contract because
they are not fulfilling their end of the bargain.”
On July 9, however, that letter of intention to terminate
the contract was delivered.
At its meeting on the following Tuesday, village law
director Rodd Lawrence notified the administration
and the council that his office received correspondence
from the association submitting its termination of the
management agreement.
This action means that the YMCA of Central Ohio
will no longer manage educational or recreational programming
at the Vaughn E. Hairston location, but
that does not mean it could not have a presence there
in the future.
When The Columbus Messenger spoke with Tony
Collins, the president and CEO of the YMCA of
Central Ohio earlier this month regarding the site’s
operational status, he said the association would like
to continue hosting youth development programs at
the facility such as after-school care, Head Start, and
Positive Alternative Learning for Students (PALS).
He said due to budgetary issues, the association
could no longer operate recreational (or health and
wellness) programming at this location as they could
not afford to cover its annual cost of $150,000.
With this announcement came a question posed by
members of the council: What will future operations at
the Vaughn E. Hairston look like?
According to both parties, there are a number of
ways that the future use of this location could be
shaped.
As per Collins’ suggestion, the village or a donor
could cover the cost of programming, or the association
could share the facility with the village should they
find another vendor to provide health and wellness
programs. (In this scenario, the YMCA would run educational
programming on certain days or at certain
hours, while the village or a third party could run
recreational programming on certain days or at certain
including eight new names this year alone.
The public is encouraged to visit the Purple Heart
Memorial Walk, view its memorials and pay homage to our
community’s wounded and fallen heroes. The Walk will be
framed with full-size American flags and illuminated for
after-dark, reflective strolls from Friday, Aug. 6 through
Tuesday, Aug. 10.
All are invited to honor and show appreciation to Purple
Heart recipients and their families. For additional information,
Pet supply drive at library
Southwest Public Libraries will host the Patrons
and Paws pet supply donation drive through July 31.
Patrons can bring in donations of pet supplies to either
the Grove City Library or the Westland Area Library.
The items will be passed on to local animal shelters.
hours.)
Several members on the council said they would not
be averse to finding another party to run the programming
side as it has been done before. The YMCA has
been managing programs at this location since 1998.
Councilwoman Shawn Moore said the village
should invest funds into beautifying the complex. She
said the last thing she wants is to see this location fall
into disrepair.
“This building is an asset to our village and to our
community,” she said. “I don’t want to see it go down.”
Barnes said the village will not let this facility go to
the wayside.
He said that with this termination notification by
the YMCA, it frees up the members on the YMCA advisory
committee to move forward with negotiations on
the future of the Vaughn E. Hairston building.
He said the committee will continue to “sit down”
with YMCA representatives and discuss what alternative
options there are on the table.
“You cannot move forward until you close the door
on what you have,” he said.
He added that during this phase of negotiations,
there will be items that he and the committee cannot
openly discuss.
Moore said she understands that aspect of the negotiation
process but wants the council to be kept in the
loop.
“I would like for us to be involved in this discussion
because we have been totally closed out of the process
(so far),” she said.
Councilman Steven Larkins serves on the advisory
committee along with councilwoman Nikky Ziglar-
Zimmerman and two other village representatives.
Ziglar-Zimmerman was not in attendance during the
July 13 meeting but Larkins said he wanted to assure
the rest of the council that they were not “keeping
secrets.”
“We are not trying to hide anything,” he said.
“We’re just trying to keep things above board.”
He asked that the council have trust in the process,
and trust in the committee to “get this done right.”

The City Beat
By Andrea Cordle
Grove City Editor
A few years ago, the city of Grove City
established an environmental sustainability
committee. This committee was tasked
with creating a plan that covers energy,
natural resources, economic development,
sustainable neighborhoods, transportation,
and waste reduction.
On July 12, this committee presented
the Grove City sustainability plan to council
during a special service committee
meeting.
Grove City has already been leading the
way when it comes to green efforts. In the
early 1990s, the city established Keep
Grove City Beautiful and chartered a tree
commission. In 2010, the city installed rain
gardens in several parks and started a citywide
recycling program. In 2014, the city
replaced all traffic signals with LED lights
and installed two electric vehicle charging
stations. By 2018, all city facilities had
switched to LED lighting. Earlier this year,
the city added a food-waste drop-off bin for
residents to cut down on the waste diverted
to the landfill.
According to Linda Rosine, the environmental
supervisor for the city of Grove City
and a committee member, more can be
done to benefit the environment.
“If you’re going to talk-the-talk, you
have to walk-the-walk,” she said.
To reduce the amount of waste going
into the landfill, the plan suggests that the
city continue to work with the Solid Waste
Authority of Central Ohio (SWACO) to
educate the public on recycling and its benefits.
It also suggests increasing the community’s
diversion rate from 28 percent to
40 percent by 2023 by providing more
opportunities for residents to recycle. The
plan recommends that all city facilities, as
well as city and non-city events, be zero
waste by 2025.
City leaders would like to reduce the use
of plastic bags in the community.
Councilman Ted Berry said he has climbed
to the top of the SWACO landfill, located in
Grove City, and saw that it is packed with
plastic bags.
“Those things don’t break down,” said
Berry.
Grove City Mayor Richard “Ike” Stage
suggested the city offer some type of
reward for those who choose not to utilize
plastic bags.
“We have to create a culture of sustainability,”
said Stage.
The plan presented gives recommendations
such as all new residential construction
should be Energy Star certified. If
adopted by council, the city’s development
department would work with builders to
become an Energy Star partner and the
city would promote the contractors who are
Energy Star certified. The plan also proposes
that all new-build multi-family and
senior living facilities provide recycling for
its residents.
To protect and conserve natural
resources, the plan suggests that the city
encourage homeowners to manage their
gardens and yards as backyard wildlife
habitat. This can be accomplished by hosting
workshops on how to create this habitat.
The plan also said the city should conduct
a tree canopy study and change commercial
development landscape codes to
advise using native plants, trees, and
shrubs.
To support more sustainable energy
practices, the plan recommends implementing
an energy aggregation. In
November 2020, voters approved an energy
aggregation, which allows local governments
to use its buying power on behalf of
the residents and small business owners to
purchase energy with the goal of obtaining
better rates and more product options,
such as wind and solar power. The city has
sent out requests for proposals for the generation
of clean renewable energy. Once a
purchase agreement has been reached, eligible
households or business would be notified
of the offer to decide whether to participate.
These are just a few measures presented
in the sustainability plan. To implement
some of these initiatives, the plan suggests
up in Bellville, Ohio. He completed his undergraduate
degree at the University of Akron, where
he graduated magna cum laude with honors.
Dr. Morris attended The Ohio State University
Q: What are floaters and what causes them?
A: Floaters are small dark shapes that move across your vision. They can appear
as dots, threads, squiggly lines, or even like cobwebs. Most floaters are caused
by normal changes in the eye. As you age, small strands of vitreous (gel-like fluid
that fills your eye) can clump together and cast a shadow on your retina (the
light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye). Those shadows appear as floaters
that drift across your vision. You may notice floaters more when you look at a
bright background, like a computer screen or a blue sky.
Q: How often should someone with new
floaters get an eye exam?
A: Someone experiencing new floaters, a large increase in the number of floaters,
or flashing lights should see an eye care professional immediately. Sometimes
floaters have a more serious cause, including: infection, injury, inflammation,
Truck traffic concerning Hibbs Road residents
By Dedra Cordle
Staff Writer
With road construction and the build-up
of residential development taking place
nearby, residents along Hibbs Road in
Jackson Township expected to see an
influx of vehicles traveling through the
neighborhood. While the increase of traffic
may have not made many homeowners
happy, they were accepting of the fact that
it would be used as a cut through as long as
drivers followed the rules of the road.
For the most part, non-residential vehicles
have been abiding by the posted speed
limits but there has been a presence on
those streets to which homeowners can no
longer stand — the sight of large trucks
coming down the street.
Hibbs Road, said Township
Administrator Shane Farnsworth, was not
designed with large trucks in mind.
“Not only is it a residential area, but
there are a few sharp turns that make it
tricky to navigate for any vehicle, let alone
a semi-truck,” he said.
Yet there has been an influx of semitrucks
and even dump trucks testing those
turns and ignoring the fact that they are
prohibited from using it at all.
“Residents are very concerned about
this,” said Farnsworth. “They’re concerned
about the kids playing in the area.”
From an enforcement standpoint, there
is little the township can do on its own to
stop trucks from accessing Hibbs Road to
get to State Routes 104 or 665.
While Farnsworth said he has been
down there, writing down license plate
numbers and relaying it to local law
enforcement agencies, they cannot do much
else.
“It can be very challenging at times for
(patrolling units) because it is very random,”
he said.
Some relief, however, may soon be in the
works.
During the July 20 board of trustees
meeting, chairman Jim Rauck asked their
law enforcement liaison about accessing
license reading technology to use as a tool
of deterrence along problem streets.
Franklin County Sheriff Deputy Travis
Carter said that is a possibility.
He said the office is aware of the issue
on Hibbs Road and does believe that may
be a good location to install a license reader
so they can stop trucks from accessing the
road.
“Anything that would make them second
guess using residential roads would be
a good thing,” said Farnsworth.
Rauck said he would be meeting with
Farnsworth to “work out a timeline” to
determine which areas would need to be
monitored and at which times.
In other news, the board of trustees will
hold its Aug. 3 regular meeting at Jackson
Township Fire Station 202, located at 3650
Hoover Road. It will begin at 7 p.m.
In Entertainment
is sequel was inescapable
July 25, 2021 - GROVE CITY MESSENGER - PAGE 11
Success at the box office doesn’t always mean a new
property is going to receive a sequel, but what makes
it more of a probability is if the film is a part of the horror
genre and it nets a nice profit for the distribution
studio.
Horror films, especially ones that have aspirations
to become a franchise, are relatively inexpensive to
make. The studios cast little known actors and employ
up-and-coming directors to keep the costs down, and
then they challenge the creative team to get inventive
with the small budget they are given. They can do this
because not only do they hold the purse, but they know
that fans of the genre are loyal and they will come out
and give just about any thriller a chance.
One such thriller that was given the chance at the
2019 box office was “Escape Room.” Working off the
popularity of real-life escape rooms that, allegedly,
allow people to bond through solving puzzles in order
to leave, its premise added a deadly twist into the mix.
While there was great tension throughout thanks to an
even greater ensemble cast, the most impressive thing
about that film was the set design that saw burning
rooms, a frozen tundra, and floors that dropped out
from underneath trembling feet.
Filmed with a budget of $8 million, it was no terrible
loss for the studio if this film did not profit as much
as they would have liked. However, it amassed a
return of more than $140 million throughout its theatrical
run, making it one of the year’s biggest hits
based on that ratio. With that success in mind, it was
no surprise that a sequel would be, well, inescapable.
Though I do not often look forward to sequels, I
have to say I was actually looking forward to seeing
what else this world had to offer. It teased secret organizations
run by the wealthy who set up these games
for sport, but I was more intrigued by the prospect of
retribution against these creators as promised by the
final boy and final girl. After all, it is a modern tale
about David and Goliath, the haves and the have nots,
and the tormented versus the tormentors. Perhaps I
was being too idealistic about where a film like this
could go, but nonetheless, I wanted to see what
“Tournament of Champions” could bring to the horror
table.
The successes of this film lay firmly at the path of
its predecessor. Like the original, the sequel builds a
great cast of characters around the survivors of the
first and it comes equipped with another fantastically
fatalistic set design that features electrified subway
trains, acid rain, and collapsing beaches. But where
this film runs into problems is that it never tries to
walk outside of that path until it is late — so late that
you’ve grown tired of the scenery and are agitated by
the very people who asked you to come along for a trip
that was promised to be better.
Until that point when you realize this sequel is just
a rehash, however, it is somewhat enjoyable thanks to
Artifacts and a local author at
the Welcome Center and Museum
the strength of the first couple
acts. It begins with final boy
Ben (Logan Miller) and final
girl Zoey (Taylor Russell) trying
to come to terms with the terror
that was inflicted upon them in
the first film. Ben has done
what most men do and is suffering
in silence while Zoey is more willing to share her
experiences with a therapist. Despite their chosen
ways to cope, both have a simmering desire to find
those responsible for their escape room trauma, the
latter more so than the former.
Feeling indebted to Zoey for saving his life (and also
because he is developing a crush), Ben agrees to go to
New York City because she believes she knows the
headquarters of Minos Escape Rooms Inc. When they
get to this location, however, they are lured into a
sparsely filled train car that is definitely not what it
seems.
Quickly realizing that they have unwittingly been
placed into yet another deadly escape room, the duo
has to band together with this new group of strangers
(the cast includes Thomas Cocquerel, Holland Roden,
Indya Moore and Carlito Olivero) and solve the clues in
order to get out.
And here is where the film should have branched off
into its own thing somehow, but it continues to follow
the rules set up in the original where if you make it
through one escape room, you go onto the next. While
the rooms are somewhat inventive, it just gets to the
point where enough is enough despite liking the thinly
developed characters.
The thing with these escape rooms is that you never
know where the end is, and I have the feeling the creators
might not know that either with this budding
franchise. It offers a new rule at the end and it even
promises a third installment, but, like the characters,
it’s hard to trust anything when you were told one
thing but given an entirely different thing altogether.
Though fans of the original, or those who go in with
little knowledge of its origins, will likely find some
enjoyment out of “Tournament of Champions” you
can’t help but think it could have been better than just
the tired retread of a decent indie thriller.
Residents in the Timberlake subdivision would like
Pleasant Township to make some repairs in their
neighborhood.
Bart Doddroe, president of the area’s homeowner’s
association, attended the July 13 township board
meeting to discuss their concerns. According to the
Doddroe, it has been more than 10 years since the
street signs have been repainted or replaced. The residents
would like for the old peeling signs to be repainted
or replaced with modern reflective signs.
Robert Bausch, the township’s road superintendent
said that he would look into this concern.
The subdivision residents also said the fire
hydrants need painted.
According to Fire Chief Brian Taylor, the fire
hydrants in that area are maintained by the county
www.columbusmessenger.com
Residents want repairs in Pleasant Township
and any repairs would need to go directly to the
Franklin County Sanitary Engineer’s Office.
“We can only flush them,” said Taylor.
Taylor did reassure residents that to his knowledge,
all hydrants are currently operable.
In other news, a tanker at the Pleasant Township
Fire Department is in need of maintenance.
The truck’s frame has corrosion from salt and brine
on the road. The tanker was inspected approximately
two years ago for the same issue. The current plan is
to have the tank removed from the vehicle and to
clean, paint, and repair the frame.
“This will help prevent the rust jacking from worsening
and causing a similar issue that we faced with
our other endings where the frame had to be replaced,”
said Taylor.
There is no current time frame for the repairs, but
Taylor said he hopes to have it completed before winter.
