GIRGARRE COMMUNITY NEWS
Work on a brand new, state-of-the-art Café and
Community Hub (pictured right) to be situated on
the Winter Rd, Green Thumbs Nursery site will
begin shortly, thanks to a generous $814,000
grant, courtesy of the Federal Government’s Murray
Darling Basin Economic Program. The Honourable
Damian Drum, Member for Nicholls, delivered
the good news to an incredibly happy crowd
on site on Thursday 8 July.
Right:The Honourable Damian Drum. Left: Shire of
Campaspe Mayor, Chrissy Weller, Crs Adrian Weston
and Frank Zobec.
“The Federal government was well aware of
the impact on small communities caused by
reforms to the Murray Darling Basin Water Plan”,
Mr Drum said. “The loss of water from the region
has come at a great cost to many, limiting their
ability to maintain wealth. The Government’s Economic
Grant program is designed to give communities
like Girgarre the opportunity to develop
enterprises and programs that will provide
diversity and bring wealth back to their local community.
It recognises that communities know how
best to tackle the challenges they face, and what
kinds of economic activity would best support
them.”
You have bitten off a large project”, he went
on to say, “It is one of the better projects I’ve
seen. But it shows what can happen when you
dream big. I am envious of the phenomenal commitment
of your community. These funds are to
say thank you for your vision and hard work, but it
represents only a fraction of the many in-kind
hours put in by the local volunteers. It is an honour
to contribute.”
Chair of the Gargarro Botanic Gardens Inc and Project
Manager, Mr Doc McDonald, said the Gargarro
Committee had nothing to lose by submitting an application
for a grant. “We felt we were the perfect fit
for the Government’s program”, he said. “We had
all the plans and permits in hand, and we knew we
were ‘shovel-ready’ if successful.
It is an exciting time,” he said with a huge
smile. “We are still pinching ourselves and we are
incredibly grateful to the Federal Government for
their on-going support. The Café will provide employment
opportunities, and the profits from the
café and nursery will be part of the revenue stream
that suppports the local community. The next 12
months will see unprecedented activity on the site.
The end result will be more than satisfying.” (Irene
Labbett)
Co-ordinator’s Catch-up
Greetings, I hope this finds you all happy, healthy and warm. As I was saying last
month, winter slows the pace down at The Cottage, throw in lockdown 5.0 and the
snails are passing me by hehehe. Not really, plenty to do here, just not the constant
flow of people, which we miss.
A couple of big news items. We have been successful on the grant front this year and
two big projects are about to commence are;
1. The utility room is being given a renovation with new flooring and a kitchenette being installed. Many
additional items are also being included such as a dishwasher, hot water unit and a boiler for cuppa’s. Lot’s
of other special features are going to be included, which will make Debra, Wendy and the groups that use
this space very happy indeed. A huge thank you to Damian Drum and his team for the funding, which we
received through the Australian Government, “Stronger Communities Programme”.
2. Girgarre Community Cottage Edible Garden (we have yet to come up with a catchy name). As you are all
aware, the Green Thumbs Nursery is relocating to Gargarro. At first we were left contemplating what would
happen with the space left behind and how we would engage volunteers and promote community
participation-but then we had a brain wave. During the pandemic the need for our food bank program dramatically
increased, unfortunately and we also started a Thursday meal program to offer a “health check- in
opportunity” and to let community members know we were thinking of them. All of this meant we needed
more fresh fruit and veg as the quality of the produce we have been receiving has been quite poor. Hence
let’s grow our own. This ticks all of the right boxes, reduced food miles, sustainability, fresh and in season
produce and an activity to engage volunteers and community members. This is only stage one of a four
stage transformation, but we are very excited and would like to thank our funding partners; Green Thumbs
Nursery and Campaspe Shire Council. As part of the State Government’s response to the Covid 19 pandemic,
Campaspe Shire Council was funded through the Community and Social Isolation (CASI) initiative to support
the improvement of access to food security and social connectedness across the municipality.
Before pictures and site works in prep for edible garden.
Take care, bye for now Kezia

Co-ordinator’s Catch-up continued….
Lockdown 5.0
We had planned to have our Christmas in July lunch on
Tuesday the 20 July and initially due to the lockdown we
were planning to postpone it to the following week.
However, due to the lockdown extension it has turned into a
community meal via delivery, so we can do a social/health
check-in and let our isolated community members know we
are thinking of them.
We are now preparing 25 plates of roast pork
with apple sauce, turkey with cranberry and a
glazed ham. This will be accompanied by roast
potatoes and pumpkin, peas and a gratin of
cauliflower and broccoli. Dessert will be alternate
plates of Christmas pudding or fruit
mince tarts served with custard. Enjoy folks!
Thank you to Debra and Sandra for preparing and serving the meal and Richard and Dale for undertaking
the deliveries. Go team!

Girgarre Post Office
As we all know, small businesses are suffering during the pandemic and this is affecting one of our
own. We need to rally around our post office and support them during this time.
It is important to emphasise that our local post office does not receive a wage from Australia Post,
they earn commissions from our locals using Australia Post facilities such as -

Banking with the Commonwealth, NAB, Westpac and Bendigo Bank.
Full post office facilities including P.O Boxes
Parcel Post (Domestic & International)
Post Billpay
EFTPOS Facility
Cash out facility
Whilst using Australia Post facilities, there are also others
items for sale there -

Milk & Bread
Cold Drinks
Confectionary
Newspapers and Magazines
Local produce (Honey)
So instead of sitting about on your mobile or computer and doing everything online, pop down and
support your local small business. Lets keep them open.

News from Many Makers Gallery Stanhope
For many small businesses and particularly the Arts industry, the economics of the pandemic
has hit hard and sadly in some cases it’s been a knock-out punch.
MMG exhibits work from more than 40 individual Aussie Makers and I cannot help but be inspired
to try to keep the gallery going when I admire their creations up close. My vision for Many
Makers Gallery is to create a destination, adding to the superb arts vibe already on show
throughout the Campaspe Shire. Viewing art & artisan made products online is certainly not as
wonderful as visiting an arts space; just as going to a music gig is so much more of a thrill than
watching an online music video. So please, when you can, get out there and admire and
appreciate the arts in person and try not to allow ‘online’ to become the norm!
New to the gallery are Armstrong’s Rivers
Edge Olive Oil and Blacksmith Greg
McGregor. Greg, from Tongala is well
known for his quality metalwork. He is a
true craftsperson and his pieces are both
decorative and functional. The Armstrong
family (Stanhope and Axedale) are
producing boutique quality extra virgin
olive oil using Frantoio olives from their
Axedale property. It is delightfully fresh
and robust in flavour!

IDENTITY
My mother wore hats. I know because I inherited a whole boxful. She was a milliner with Chapeaux
Modernes de Paris in the days when a good hat made your outfit.
My actual memory of her face is incomplete: in the darkness someone is holding up a lamp. The light
is shining on the side of her face, and her hair, which I remember was soft and wavy, is tucked up under
her hat ... It was the last time she picked me up and held me, and I did not see her again. I was not yet
three.
Mamie brought me up – my grand-mère, who also had other grandchildren, Géraud and Anicette,
with whom I played daily. One time, when I was about ten, we had a dispute.
“… and besides,” said Anicette, “Mamie is not even your grand-mère. She is only ours!”
My dear, wonderful Mamie – still and forever my Mamie. “Yes, child, it is true,” she told me that day.
“But I love you no less. What else would I have done? Sent you to an orphanage, never to know the love
and warmth of a family? Unthinkable!”
Other children in our village had also lost parents in the war and dwelt with relatives. Why should my
situation be any different? I knew that my mother, widowed early in the war, lived with me in a room in
Mamie’s house. People came that dark night, Mamie said, to take her to a safe place. Someone had
informed the local administration of the German occupation forces of certain clandestine activities.
Names had been given. It was imperative to leave at once …
“But – the war ended five years ago. Why has my mother not returned?” I demanded of Mamie.
Sometimes we come to believe things simply because of how they appear. I suppose I did not really
understand until my teenage years when I began to read the stories of the heroes and heroines of the
Résistance. Was my mother was one of these? Nothing has ever come to light of what happened to her or
her companions of that night. Were they caught after all and immediately got rid of? Did they escape and
possibly meet their end elsewhere? I have never found answers. Those who knew have never told.
Tracking her name, Lefeuvre, led everywhere and nowhere, and in any case, the name may well have
been false. My searches of existing records found only that the salon of Chapeaux Modernes de Paris had
disappeared in the war years, along with the Yaakovwitz family who owned it.
A while ago, it occurred to me to have a mitochondrial DNA test through a genealogical site,
to determine my ancestry even if not my immediate parentage. It seems that I have discernable genetic
variations found in certain people who settled in parts of Eastern Europe centuries ago. Over time, with
each new persecution, Ashkenazim have left in droves to relocate westward – Prague, Berlin, Paris.
London, and beyond …
I have posted on the genealogical site the name I know my mother called me before Mamie changed
it – with good reason at the time, I suppose – to Jocelyn. I have boldly linked it with two other possibilities
that have not surfaced in my own documentation. Perhaps – who knows – in the virtual world of
cyberspace, before I die, someone may recognise this name: Rivkah Yaakovwitz, born 1940, Paris.
bonus will be available from 1 February 2021 to 31 January 2022 and will be limited to one payment per
eligible households. We (Neighbourhood Houses) have partnered with NHVic and Good Shepherd to offer
