That’s the message the Richmond

“It’s really a deterrent, we have
seen a decrease [in dumping] but
not completely,” said association

“We designed and commissioned
these signs to deter
people from fly-tipping in our
area, as well as so close to our

WINZ staff member
bashed, hospitalised
• By Chris Barclay
A FEMALE front line staff
member has been hospitalised
after being savagely attacked
inside Work and Income
New Zealand’s Sydenham
branch, prompting a review of
security systems.
The Ministry of Social
Development, which oversees
WINZ, and the Public
Service Association are
investigating how the alleged
attacker circumvented
security measures on Friday
morning.
There are a minimum of
two security guards on duty
at WINZ offices with public
access, and up to four are on
shift at busy sites.
Workplace protection
at WINZ was reassessed
after Leigh Cleveland and
Peggy Noble were shot dead
by Russell John Tully inside
the Ashburton branch in
2014.
The Sydenham branch
on Durham St also had an
‘airlock’ door where visitors
can be screened after entering
the front door.

STEPH TE Ohaere-Fox etched
her name in Canterbury rugby
folklore when she became
the province’s first woman to
notch 100 Farah Palmer Cup
appearances last Sunday.
The 36-year-old former Black
Fern, who led Canterbury
to three titles of their four
successive titles before
motherhood took precedence
last season, has returned to
the squad after giving birth to
daughter Anatia.
Te Ohaere-Fox arrived in
Christchurch in 2001 when
taking a summer holiday
to visit her sister and the
budding prop was enticed
to stay and join the
Aranui High School
Academy.
She represented
Canterbury

ahead of her

Te
Ohaere-Fox
has been a
fixture in the
squad since
apart from
2010-11 when
she stayed in the UK following
the women’s Rugby World
Cup, and 2020 due to
the birth of her second
child.
“Anatia turns one
next month, but I just
couldn’t wait to be back
playing alongside my
mates who are like my
second family,” said
Te Ohaere-Fox, who
featured prominently
in Canterbury’s tense
23-22 win over Wellington at
Rugby Park.
“I just want to thank
all the coaches I’ve had
over the years, all the
players I’ve played
with. I’ve learnt
little things over the
whole time I’ve
been playing. It’d
a credit to all you
guys,” she said.
Originally from
Kerepehi, a small
rural town in the
Firth of Thames,
Te Ohaere-Fox
reckoned
she was always destined to
wear the red and black of
Canterbury.
“It’s funny really,
Kerepehi was my
dad’s club, I used
to watch him play
and that’s where
my love for rugby
started, their colours
are red and black,
Christchurch, my club
here in Canterbury is
red and black, and so
too Canterbury.”

Christchurchbased
PSA

Anthony Rimell
described the
attack as “a
serious harm event” and sadly
indicative of the threats staff
confront on a regular basis.
“There’s been an increasing
number of violent incidents at
MSD buildings in Canterbury.
A number of clients have
certainly chosen to issue verbal
threats against staff, they’ve also
chosen to take out their frustrations
on doors and furniture,”
he said.
The union in conjunction
with MSD – who were unable
to respond to The Star yesterday
– was providing practical and
emotional support for the victim
while assessing security measures
is another priority.
“We’ll be looking to identify
what happened, whether the
current safety protocols were
in some way breached,” Rimell
said.
“The bigger question is are
there ways to make the workplace
safer? What can be learned
from this to minimise the risk
of this sort of thing happening

The WINZ building, which

“It’s an ongoing concern,”
Rimell said.

How our neighbourhood
influences mental health
A NEW Canterbury University
study assessing the relationship
between young people’s mental
health and where they grow up
could influence urban and rural
planning.
Researchers at UC are mapping
localities and investigating
whether living near gaming venues,
takeaways and liquor stores,
or green and blue areas
like parks and rivers are
linked to mental health.
UC public health
lecturer Matt Hobbs,
who is co-investigator
on the project, said
often research focused
on individual aspects,
but mental health was
complex with multiple
influences.
“One of those influences is the
environment in which a young
person grows up in.
“What we’re doing is taking a
cross-section of basically a million
young New Zealand adults
and we’re looking at the whole
country.
“Times have changed in terms
of the way we interact with our
environment but what we’re
particularly interested in is our
current day, and what do our
current environments mean for
our young people.”
Hobbs said the increase of
Matt Hobbs
liquor, gambling and fast food
spaces over the years pushed
people in the wrong direction for
making healthy choices.
“We’ve got children from age
10 to 24 [in the research], so
across that spectrum obviously
there’s a change where young
people can access gambling and
liquor stores themselves once
they turn 18 and move
into young adulthood.
“What we’re doing is
saying if we have a park,
which is great in our
neighbourhood, but it’s
surrounded by liquor
stores and places where
young people can go to
gamble, or even places
like fast food outlets or
dairies, what that means is all of
these things may combine to influence
a young person’s mental
health.”
The research will take into account
the whole neighbourhood.
It will also split mental health
issues into groups, looking at
emotional, behavioural, selfharm,
substance abuse problems
among people.
It is hoped the research will
help community advocates to
persuade policy makers to
take heed and include findings
from the two-year study in
future planning.

CITY COUNCILLOR Phil
Mauger appears close to
confirming he will run for
mayor.
Mauger has fended off questions
from The Star, only saying
he “was definitely still considering
it”.
“I’m
definitely still
considering it,
I’d be lying if
I said I wasn’t.
I’m just doing
a bit of
homework.
I’ll make my
mind up one
way or another
before
Christmas or
in the next
couple of
months,” he
said.
But sources
say Mauger’s
announcement
is imminent
and the
political jostling in recent weeks
over the seating capacity at the
multi-use arena will be one of
the platforms for his campaign.
Former mayor Garry Moore
said yesterday he also had heard
Mauger would run for mayor in
next year’s local body elections.
The race will be wide open after
Lianne Dalziel said she would
not seek a fourth term.
“Absolutely . . . it’s obvious,
isn’t it? It’s about next year’s mayoral
campaign. You’ll see more
and more of this – you’ll see
issues raised to raise profiles,”
Moore said of the controversy
over the multi-use arena.
The city council voted in favour
of downsizing the stadium’s
capacity from 30,000 seats to a
minimum of 25,000 last month
to bring the $473 million project
back within the budget.
Mauger, and councillors James
Gough, Sam MacDonald, Aaron
Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz
Keown and Catherine Chu all
voted against the decision, and
have said they will try and have
it overturned.
The controversial verdict was
followed by a more than 20,000
signature petition demanding
the city council to overturn its
decision.
The 25,000 seat decision
sparked concerns the city will be
unable to accommodate major
events, including All Blacks
matches and large-scale concerts.
Moore said he hoped their bid
to overturn the decision would
backfire the same way the Jade
Stadium upgrades faced public
backlash in the years before the
February 22, 2011, earthquake.
“I just think that these five
councillors are pushing this for
political gain and to pander to a
section of our community who
are obsessed with rugby. There
are more important things for
them to focus on.”
Mauger did not respond yesterday
to Moore’s comments.
But last week he told The
Star the city council needed
to honour what it promised to
Cantabrians, especially when
competing with Dunedin’s stadium
to secure future All Blacks
matches.

“We promised people 30,000
seats and we should give them
what they wanted,” he said.
“What’s an extra little bit now
to make the thing really good?
People are moving into Christchurch
from Australia; they’re moving
down from Auckland – you
get one shot at getting it right.”
Moore was also concerned the
“political campaign” was being
orchestrated by New Zealand
Rugby due to its commercial
interest in the project.
He questioned how long rugby
was going to be a driver of a stadium
and whether this was what
Cantabrians truly wanted.
NZR did not respond to
Moore’s comments yesterday.
“It’s a luxury product of the
city that shouldn’t be driven by
self-interested groups like the
rugby union,” Moore said.
“Most people in Christchurch
want roads fixed, rubbish picked
up or are fighting to keep our
water [in the city]. A lot of people
couldn’t even afford to go to a
test if we had one.”
As the fight continues to retain
the stadium’s original design,
Moore believed it was going to
become a political battle between
the left and the right within the
city council.
“It always has and always will
be.”

It is a time-honoured
tradition that had been
a long time coming for
a New Zealand eight.
Almost half a century
after Simon Dickie was

Sam Bosworth made
a splash in Tokyo. Chris
Barclay catches up with
New Zealand’s latest
gold medal-winning
coxswain
TRADITION: Sam Bosworth

his crew after winning the
gold medal. (PHOTO: LEON
NEAL/GETTY)
There was no resistance – that
would be futile. And, really, it’s
a perk of the job, the post-race
dunking for a triumphant eights’
last member across the line.
Sam Bosworth was gleefully
launched into the Sea Forest Waterway
last Friday. The 27-yearold
coxswain is familiar with
the notion of it’s all ‘water off a
duck’s back’.
The slightest component of
an elite rowing crew invariably
needs the thickest skin. Size-wise,
the cox is comparable to a jockey,
though Bosworth’s horsepower
does talk back.
Bosworth once considered the
racing industry as a profession
when he was growing up in
North Canterbury – a relative
was a rider turned trainer, now
based in the Waikato.
Instead the middle child of
three brothers opted for uncle
Tom Hazlett’s other sporting
passion.
Hazlett was a cox at Christ’s
College, and Bosworth followed
that example after transitioning
from cricket at the end of Year 9.
“I rang him (Hazlett) and
he said ‘Give it a crack’. I was
thinking about being a jockey as
well, it’s a pretty awesome sport,
but I was just so wrapped up in
rowing.”
Henry Smith, master in charge
of rowing at Christ’s College,
is relieved the old boy chose
his sport when reflecting on a
decade-long association.
Smith started coaching
Bosworth from under-16 level
through to under-18 level with
current New Zealand eights
coach Tony O’Connor.
He realised Bosworth had
the requisite skills long before
Christ’s College won the Maadi
Cup in 2012 on Lake Ruataniwha.
“I remember saying to the New
Zealand selector at the time the
difference between our crew and
everyone else was the pilot we
had on board. And if they let that
one go they’d kick themselves.
We always knew he had something,”
Smith said.
While you can mould an astute
coxswain, certain elements
cannot be taught.
“It’s probably 50-50,” Smith
reckoned.
“The feel and motivation, some
people have and some people
don’t,” Smith said.
“The x-factor and the
personality the coxswain has,
their ability to articulate it and
bring the best out in a crew, that’s

tactician behind golden glory
Smith said while the coxswain
was the tiniest crew member –
the minimum weight is 55kg and
rarely exceeded – the weight of a
race sat squarely on their slender
shoulders.
“You push them off 45 minutes
before the start time, it’ll be an
hour before you see them again
and during that time the coxon
is in charge,” he said.
“It’s not like rugby where the
water boy can go on, he’s all
mic’d up and he can deliver messages
from the coach.
“They’re a tactician on the
boat, a coach on the water . . .
you’ve got to be pretty self-assured,
be able to motivate, steer
the boat and they have to take
quite a bit of criticism,” he said.
“They’re the person in charge
of asking the athlete to deliver
more and more when they’re
absolutely exhausted. They must
have a mindset where they can
take it on the chin and grow
without taking a whole lot of
stuff to heart.”
Bosworth admitted it wasn’t
all smooth sailing, but the
spiky observations and spirited
debates made all those hours
on Lake Karapiro worthwhile
when the eight emulated the
black-singleted 1972 crew to win
rowing’s blue riband event.
“To be a good coxswain you
have to work with people, that

may be one of my strengths,”
said the Lincoln University
Bachelor of environmental management
and planning graduate,
who has been based at Rowing
New Zealand’s finishing school
in Cambridge since 2016.
“I don’t think you have to be
mates, you just have to make
sure that every day you turn up
to training you’re bringing your
best self.
“I play golf with some of the
boys. There’s a time to be serious
and a time when we can have
a laugh.”
Bosworth, who also competes
for the Avon Rowing Club,
traced his devotion to rowing
back to selection in the South
Island squad at under-17 level,
and a successful regatta with the
lightweight coxed four.
“That’s when I thought ‘This
could be a go’. I remember watching
the Olympics thinking ‘Man,
I’d love to go there one day’.”
Christ’s College’s Maadi Cupwinning
exploits nine years ago
was also critical.
“We won and two coxswains
went up to triaI. I was picked
for the New Zealand junior
(under-19) coxed four. If we hadn’t
been successful at school that opportunity
may have never arisen.”
Once he completes his fortnight
of managed isolation in
Christchurch, Bosworth plans
to visit his old school and carry
on a mentoring programme he
benefited from as a teenager, a
gesture Smith would appreciate
before the next Maadi Cup in
late March.
“When he’s back he’ll hop in
and do a session or two with the
boys. What he can articulate
can take us weeks to identify
through the eye. That’s a huge
benefit,” he said.
Bosworth thought RNZ duties
resumed in October, and until
then he was happy for an octuple
scull to stay in storage.
“I’ll take some time off, have a
bit of a break and enjoy catching

up with family and friends. I
can’t wait to get down to Wanaka
and go skiing,” he said.
His parents Pete and Ange
have a vineyard in Waipara so
there could be some odd jobs
that need doing.
And when he returns to
Cambridge there’s also a stressfree
way to navigate Karapiro,
with brothers Olly and Tom.
“We’ve got a speedboat. Mum
and dad were up at Christmas
and it was the first time I’d been
on the lake in a non-rowing boat.
“They couldn’t believe how
far we rowed up the lake. I said
‘Yeah, it’s 30k return at least once
a week.”

Terrariums are a fun way to display
plants and create some art with nature.
There are a variety of shapes and sizes
you can make, and they’re easy as to
make yourself. Typically, foliage plants
and plants that grow slowly work best.
Small succulents, cacti, and air plants are
perfect for dry terrariums.

Avoid using icy cold water when
watering your houseplants through
winter. Either mix a small amount of
warm water in to create tepid water or
leave your water out for a few hours

from the tropics where it is much warmer

Life or death mission to fetch defibrillator
• By Susan Sandys
MICHAEL OAKLEY was
perhaps given the most
important instruction of his
life recently, when he was told
to go and fetch a community
defibrillator.
Melissa Scarlett gave him the
directive, as she was performing
cardiopulmonary resuscitation
on her father Tony Scarlett at the
family’s Hororata farm.
“It was: ‘S**t, I think I know
where the defibrillator is,’ but I’m
not sure,” Oakley said.
That was his thought as he
ran and jumped into his car and
drove towards the township.
He ultimately succeeded in
the challenge, resulting in the
survival of 69-year-old Tony,
who had been working on the
family farm when he had a
cardiac arrest and collapsed.
Oakley is now urging anyone
who does not know where their
local community’s defibrillator is
located, to find out.
The life or death story began
1.48pm on July 20. That was
the time that Oakley got a call
from a friend, who had just been
talking to Tony on the phone.
The friend told him Tony was
driving a tractor and not feeling
good, and asked him to go and
check on him. The friend also
phoned emergency services,
however, was not able to give

them the exact address.
Oakley drove about 4km
to his neighbour’s farm. He
headed to a rear paddock after
spotting a tractor there, and
came upon Melissa, who was
with her 11-year-old son Leithan,
undertaking CPR on her father
in a dairy lane. He parked
as close as he could and ran
towards the scene, but only got
within about 20m before Melissa
gave him the instruction to go
and get the defibrillator.
Oakley said as he drove away,
he thought the defibrillator
would either be at the town
garage, school or fire station. He
phoned his wife, Kate, to ask her
to phone someone else to find
out. About three minutes after
leaving the farm, he was pulling
up at the garage, GAS Hororata,
when Kate phoned back to say it
was there.
Garage manager Margaret
Cross threw him the key, he got
the defibrillator and raced back
to the farm. He arrived back at
the scene to see one of the farm’s
workers, Anthony Sayer, who
is also a Hororata firefighter,
having taken over CPR.
Oakley and Melissa applied
the defibrillator pads to Tony,
and followed the machine’s audio
instructions, delivering shocks.
“It was two, maybe three goes
before we got his heart to start
again, he started to breathe,”
Oakley said.
“He’s a lucky man.”
Five to six minutes after
Oakley arrived at the scene with
the defibrillator, the Hororata
Volunteer Fire Brigade arrived.
About 10 minutes later, St John
ambulance services arrived,
followed by the rescue
helicopter.
Oakley urged people to
find out where their local
defibrillators were, or even
download the AED Locations
app which has this information.
Tony is making a good
recovery at home after being
discharged from hospital on
Friday.
He and wife Jean also credit
the defibrillator with saving his
life.
Tony said the last thing he
remembered before waking
up in hospital a few days after
he collapsed on the farm, was
talking to his wife Jean on
the phone to tell her he did not
feel well. He had phoned Jean
after getting out of the tractor
where he had just made the call
to the friend who alerted Oakley.

“It’s absolutely amazing that
they have got these defibrillators
around the community, I didn’t
even know that they had one
there actually,” Tony said.
Jean said the call for help
from her husband came to
the landline, at their home in
Greenpark. It was fortunate
she was right by the phone at
that time, doing bookwork. She
stayed on the line as she used
her cellphone to call daughter
Melissa, and then emergency
services.
“I was yelling at him: ‘Keep
breathing, keep breathing’,” Jean
said.
She then heard the rescue scene
unfolding as she stayed on the
landline, including Melissa and
Leithan dragging Tony to the
dairy raceway and then Melissa
giving her son instructions to
hold up his granfather’s legs to
keep the circulation going

around his heart.
Their son-in-law Deane Parker
said he was proud of his wife
Melissa and his two sons for
the role they played. Leithan’s
younger brother Eddy, 7, rode his
bicycle to the cow shed to meet
emergency services and tell them
where to go.
“It was quite the family affair,”
Parker said.
Jean thanked “divine providence”
for people coincidentally
being in the right place at the
right time to take the crucial
phone calls made that day.
It was the second heart
attack her husband had
survived, the last one about 15
years ago.
“The cardiologist said to
us: ‘You have a 10 per cent of
surviving a cardiac arrest outside
of hospital.’ He said: ‘You have
survived two cardiac arrests
outside of hospital, there are no
statistics’,” Jean said.

For Grandmother, Pauline,
seeing her grandchild suffer

was heartbreaking. From birth,
she watched her beautiful Te

doing everything they could but
nothing was working.” It was
holding Te Aroha back from
being the confident, wonderful
child that Pauline knew her to be
in private.
“At home, she was so
extroverted but we noticed that

THIRTY-ONE Canterbury
police officers have suffered back
injuries after wearing upgraded
bullet and stab-proof vests.
Since the $20.7 million roll-out
of UK-manufactured Ballistic
Armour System (BAS) began
on December 1, 2019 there
have been 155 cases across New
Zealand to April 31 this year,
latest figures show.
Canterbury has recorded
the second highest number of
injuries, followed by the Counties
Manukau district (40).
The injuries, usually suffered
when entering or exiting vehicles,
have prompted police to review
how they are worn by officers.
Injuries are reportedly more
likely to occur when the BAS is
enhanced by hard armour plates
(HAP).
Police officers must have
HAP with them whenever
they are deployed, but it is only
mandatory to wear them when
attending an incident where
firearms are, or could, be present.
However, some officers have
opted to wear the HAP at all
times.
The police officers’ union, the
New Zealand Police Association,
says it is not worried about the
numbers of injuries.
PAINFUL SOLUTION:
Back injuries have been a
ramification of the enhanced
protection.

“We are not concerned with
the very limited number of
injuries, given the vests are used
every day across New Zealand by
thousands of officers,
but we accept
they were never
designed to have the

full-time which,
due to the increased

risks of firearms,
many officers are

Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz
Bulletproof vests cause
back injuries for police
president Chris Cahill.
“We understand police are
aware of this and are considering
options to address this, one of
which is to encourage officers
experiencing issues to have their
vests refitted to see if this can
alleviate the issue.”
Cooneen Protection’s vest
superseded the heavier armour
introduced in 2006.
The new vests weigh about
5kg with the removable ballistic
plates adding about 3.8kg, depending
on the size of the officer.
Cahill said the association was
consulted before the purchase
of the new vests and understood
they were the best available for
the deployment and
risk environment at the
time.
“A lighter ballistic vest may
have been available, however it
is our understanding these
would not have provided the
protection from stabbing
and cutting weapons that pose
the more likely risk to police
officers in New Zealand,”
he said.
So far police have provided
vests to 7766 staff. The process
is complete in 11 of the 12 police
districts, with Central Districts
due to join the roll-out soon.

A CHRISTCHURCH-based
health supplements company
has been fined $377,000 after
“reckless” marketing suggested
royal jelly products came from
New Zealand, when in fact they
were sourced in China.
New Zealand Health Food
Company Ltd sold royal jelly
health supplements under three
of its brands – New Zealand
Health Food, Manuka South, and
Kiwi Natural Health – with product
labels and marketing which
gave the impression they were
made with local ingredients.
However, the main constituent
ingredient, royal jelly – a gelatinous
substance produced by
honey bees which is a rich source
of highly concentrated nutrients –
was in fact sourced in China, with
the majority of secondary ingredients
also coming from overseas,
including Indonesia, Malaysia,
China, Papua New Guinea, North
America, and Samoa.
The company, which was
established in 1988 and has 15
full-time employees, was charged
by the Commerce Commission
under breaches of the Fair
Trading Act 1986, for engaging
in conduct that was liable to
mislead the public over place of
origin in their royal jelly health
supplements. The charges carried
a maximum penalty of a
$600,000 fine.
The Commerce Commission’s
main concerns came over the
labelling of the supplement’s jars
or containers.
Labels for a New Zealand
Health Food royal jelly jar of 365
capsules featured two bees on a
honeycomb in front of pasture
and mountain scenery.
It also featured an outline of
the map of New Zealand, along
with the words ‘New Zealand’,
and a statement: “The New Zealand
Health Food Company is
dedicated to bringing you premium
quality products which have
been sourced from the pristine
environment that is synonymous
with New Zealand”.
The Commerce Commission
said that the “overall impression”
was “false and/or misleading”,
because the royal jelly was from
China and not New Zealand.
On Tuesday at the district
court, the company was sentenced
after earlier pleading

Health company fined over ‘misleading’ labels
guilty to three representative
charges laid under the Fair Trading
Act.
Appearing for the Commerce
Commission, Alysha McClintock
said while the labels stopped
short of saying they had been
made in New Zealand, “just
about everything they did say
conveys exactly that”.
McClintock said the company’s
conduct was, at a minimum,
“highly reckless”, if not
deliberate.
The company’s Manuka South
brand, which is largely made up
of manuka honey products, also
came under scrutiny with its
royal jelly range.
The summary of facts,
obtained by the New Zealand
Herald, says that some Manuka
South royal jelly jars, which were
in use since at least October 2019,
had “100% New Zealand” text.
And when considered along-

side the brand name, Manuka
South, with manuka strongly
associated with New Zealand,
and “south” the South Island
of New Zealand, it created an
impression that the royal jelly
and other ingredients were from
New Zealand, the Commerce
Commission said.
New Zealand’s competition,
consumer and regulatory agency
calculated that the company directly
earned around $1 million
from the offending products.
Misleading conduct around
the place of origin of goods, the
Commerce Commission said,
can reduce trust in “100% New
Zealand” or “NZ made” claims
made by other businesses and
disadvantage competitors who
do make products here.
Defence counsel Richard Raymond
QC, said while it looked
bad, he rejected any suggestion
that the conduct was deliberate.
The lawyer accepted that the
conduct of company was “highly
careless” but denied it was “deliberate”.
The royal jelly product had
become part of their Manuka
South range, which were all
genuinely New Zealand sourced
products, Raymond told the
court.
The mistake came, he said,
when the marketing manager at
the time included the royal jelly
alongside other manuka honey
products.
“Clearly, it was, at best, sloppy
and poor from the team responsible
and of course as soon as it
was identified to senior management
[…], it was changed,” he
said.
The company started the process
of changing the labels even
before it heard from the Commerce
Commission, recognising
changes needed to be made,
Raymond said.
Judge David Ruth, however,
concluded that the conduct was
“reckless”.
He highlighted the fact
that in 2012 the Commerce
Commission wrote to the
company’s founder and majority
shareholder Rob Haines, and
other Kiwi traders, with advice
over place of origin labelling in
dietary supplements.

INNOVATIVE research using
DNA could help New Zealand’s
critically endangered Kakapo
By investigating the DNA
structure of kakapo, Canterbury
scientists hope to find the cause
of hatching failure, a factor in
the low number of kakapo in
New Zealand.
Kakapo are among New Zealand’s
most critically endangered
native birds with a total known
adult population of only 202.
Canterbury University conservation
geneticist associate
professor Tammy Steeves said
scientists have long thought that
kakapo had high infertility rates,
but recent work by colleagues
has found that a large number of
eggs previously deemed infertile
“actually aren’t infertile.”
Steeves believes her team’s
research to now investigate the
relationship between DNA structure
and early embryo death or
hatching failure will be “the first
in the world.”
“We’re currently working
with some cell lines that were
collected from kakapo about
10 years ago to see if we can
generate a picture of the kakapo
chromosomes,” she said.
From this, Steeves’ research
team wants to sequence individual
chromosomes looking
for structural variants – that is
regions of DNA that have been

repeated a number of times

flipped around.
“We’re curious about what roll
those types of difference in DNA
can have,” she said.
“It’s more likely they’re going
to be associated with different
traits, and therefore associated
with the traits we’re looking for.”
Steeves said it was hard for the
Department of Conservation to
mitigate things like infertility or
low hatching success while we
don’t know what is causing it.
Steeves and her team would
break new ground not only by
looking at kakapo’s structural
variants but also by looking at
the link between structural variants
and low hatching success.
They have been working on the
endangered bird as part of the
Kakapo 125 + Consortium, set
up in 2015 by Department of Conservation
kākāpō recovery team
scientific advisor Andrew Digby.
He said it was “great to see

the data being used to help with
kakapo conservation.”
Assuming the work proves
successful with kakapo, Steeves’
team aims to work with DOC’s
Tara Iti Recovery Group, and iwi
and hapū representatives, to apply
the same techniques to New
Zealand’s most endangered bird,
the tara iti (fairy tern).
Steeves will present her team’s
research at a free public lecture
on October 13 called Little
Genes, Big Conservation.

I’M NOT a great fan of a new
stadium at all but if we have
to have it, what about seating
for 20,000 and standing room
only for another 10,000?
As one who used to stand on
the embankment at Lancaster
Park and as a result got in
cheaper than those seated,
standing room in a new
stadium should allow cheaper
entry than the exorbitant
prices charged for seating.
If it’s good enough to have
standing room for concerts,
why not rugby matches?
Also as the cost of the
stadium will almost certainly
exceed the present estimate,
neighbouring councils should
contribute to the cost given
their people will attend stadium
events. – Brian Turner

The uncertainty of the
events of the world are beyond
anything I could ever have
imagined only two short years
ago, but the events of New
Zealand worry me more.
The laws and legislations
being passed daily are not
improving the stability of life
in this country.
Who would’ve thought
potentially an innocent conversation

court of law because someone
has taken offence at a point of
view different to their own.
Who defines what is hate?
Who defines whether someone
even meant to cause an offense?
There’s such a fine line
between sense and sensibility.
It’s too big, and because of the
restrictions and the potential
to innocently offend, some
may climb mentally into a cave
for fear of saying the wrong
thing, and may never be able to
climb out of their depression
again. What will then become

people need to stop being so

Nurses pay
Given his union background
I was somewhat surprised
to see Minister of Health
Andrew Little on television
berating the nurses for not
accepting the latest offer from
the ministry bureaucrats.
Any agreement made by
representatives during a pay
and conditions negotiation
is subject to the rank and file
membership agreeing to any
offer.
I applaud the nurses for
exercising their democratic
rights in rejecting the offer
which I understand was not
only about recognising the
value of the work they do but
also about gaining written
guarantees for all the other
promised deliverables that

We will all at some point
in our lives rely on nurses in
time of needs. Minister Little
indicates the country cannot
afford the $408 million
requested.
He has, however, found $500
million for administration for
this Government’s ideological
aspirations for health which
no doubt will not deliver one

If our health system is to
return to the standard of care
we expect, our nurses need
to be valued, resourced and
rewarded for the very considerable
responsibility they carry
every hour they are caring for
our citizens. – Ian Lees

Water policy
I started to look into the proposed
Three Waters policy to see
what all the fuss was about and
soon realised this affects all New
Zealanders, not just our farmers.
The Government’s advertisement
on television promoting
Three Waters uses simplistic,
child like language and ideas, and
tells people there is only one way
to have clean water, their way.
According to Westland district
Mayor Bruce Smith, the Government
will borrow (from who?) up

to $160 billion if we give all our
water rights and infrastructure to
central government for them to
take over and upgrade the whole
system.
My understanding, if councils
don’t opt into Three Waters,
we will have unachievable water
rates increases but water
regulation will remain in council
control.
If councils do opt in, water
rates will still be approximately
three times what they are at present
but we will have no control
over how water is used and there
is no guarantee of no further
water rate increases, plus the $160
billion debt to pay back.
Central government wants us
to think these are the only two
options at hand. There are always
more options.

Challenge to understand
water reform programme
IT’S BEEN a long week with
considerable focus on the
Government’s Three Waters
Reform programme.
Getting our heads around the
process of the reforms and the
implications for our community
has been challenging for us,
which means that it is even more
troubling for our residents.
A number of emails have come
in recently that raise questions
about when residents will be
consulted. That is an important
question that needs answering.
Our drinking water, wastewater
and stormwater assets are
valued at $6.9 billion, and they
are listed as strategic assets
under our significance and
engagement policy. This means
if we were to transfer ownership
of these assets, we would need to
undertake a special consultative
procedure.
Councils have been given
eight weeks to absorb and
analyse the information that
has been provided by the
Government, and to provide
some feedback on aspects of
the model (i.e. aggregation of
councils’ three waters services
into four regional water entities
‘owned’ by all the councils in
each of the regions).
At this stage it is hard to get a
grip on the consequences for us
here in Christchurch and across

When my predecessor Steve
Lowndes retired as chair of
this council late last year, he
highlighted some of the big
changes on the way. He was
optimistic we would be able to
deal with the “pressing issues” of
climate change and sustainability.
I share his confidence. As a

we are taking some bold steps to

there will always be a need to do

Ford’s old favourites pave way for Escape
By Ross Kiddie
For those like me who have
reached their senior years, you
will remember fondly the cars we
grew up with, most of which were
English.
The Ford Motor Company was
well represented here – Popular,
Anglia and Prefect were names
I remember well, in fact it was
the family’s three-speed Prefect I
learnt to drive in.
If you had access to a hefty
amount of overseas funds you
may well have been lucky enough
to score a Consul, Zephyr or even
Zodiac.
Those cars set the foundation
for Ford becoming a trusted and
recognised brand in New Zealand
and today nothing has changed,
the product line-up is extensive
and is sourced globally.
One of the latest to come my
way was the Spanish-built Escape,
a mid-size sport utility vehicle
that represents everything a buyer
would want in a family wagon.
The new Escape lands in a
five-model line-up, two and fourwheel-drive
variants, and now
there is the option of a plug-in
hybrid. This evaluation focuses on
the ST-Line four-wheel-drive at
$50,990.
Prices for the range start at
$42,990 and end at $55,990 for
petrol-only models. The hybrids
are likely to land in New Zealand
towards the end of the year and
will be priced at $60,990 and
$66,990.
The newcomer is flash, it has
a bold, muscular body style that
is curvy and has flowing lines, it
shows real presence and follows
similar styling to that which has
made Ford’s small SUV – the
Puma – so attractive.
The Escape carries on as before,
it gets the 2-litre EcoBoost
engine of its predecessor, the
four-cylinder unit is a real gem
in terms of performance and
economy.
The engine is rated at 183kW
and 387Nm, which is due to the
turbocharging system fitted to
the twin-camshaft, 16-valve unit.
It offers significant boost at a low
operating area. Peak power arrives
at just 5700rpm while maximum
torque is available at 3100rpm.
The significance of those figures is
the punchy way the engine works,
it is feisty and lively, yet it delivers
with little audible sound.
If you also factor in the way
power is transferred through
a silky-smooth eight-speed
automatic gearbox, the driveline is
structured for quick momentum
and it has a responsive nature.
The Escape in GT-Line form
will accelerate to 100km/h from
a standstill in 8sec and will
complete an overtaking time of
5.2sec to make 120km/h from
80km/h.
Ford is very proud of its
EcoBoost range of engines, they
have been developed not so
much for the performance I’ve
just commented on, but they also
stand out for economy.
• Price – Ford Escape ST-
Line, $50,990
• Dimensions – Length,
4620mm; width,
2000mm; height, 1666mm
• Configuration – Fourcylinder,
four-wheel-drive,
1999cc, 183kW, 387Nm,
eight-speed automatic
• Performance – 0-100km/h,
8sec
• Fuel usage – 8.6l/100km
I drove the new Escape many
times at city speeds commuting
for a fair chunk of my evaluation,
normally that type of running
isn’t kind to economy. However,
the fuel usage readout was listing
at a respectable 9.6-litre per
100km when I took the car back
to the Sockburn dealership.
That’s not that far distant to
Ford’s combined cycle average
claim of 8.6l/100km, and that’s
put into perspective when you
take into account the 4.5l/100km
figure sitting instantaneously at
a steady 100km/h, the engine
turning over very relaxed at just
1500rpm.
I’m a big European Ford fan,
and the way the designers have
engineered balance and handling
ability into the chassis of a sport
utility vehicle is a credit to them.
There is a lot of steering feel and
strong self-cantering application
within the steering mechanism.
Turn-in is direct and crisp.
The Escape is fitted with stateof-the-art
gear for convenience
and safety. Some of the major
items include satellite navigation,
voice recognition communication
and infotainment, Apple CarPlay
and Android Auto, and radar
cruise control.
Of course, it is also five-star
Australasian New Car Assessment
Program safety rated.
The new Escape has a lot to live
up to. I remember when the first
iteration landed in 2001 it was
competing head-to-head with
Mazda’s Tribute, essentially the
same car. The Escape started with
a V6 engine and then, of course,
a Volvo five-cylinder unit as
generations changed.
Since then turbocharged
engines of varying capacities have
powered the Escape and its shortterm
namesake, the Kuga, and
buyers have related well to those
exciting power plants.
The Escape lands here with a
strong European feel, which is
something I particularly like.
However, that doesn’t make it
awkward, the best of all things
Ford does is characterised in
the Escape and there is plenty of
choice within the line-up to meet
all tastes and demands.

SENIORS’ LIVING LIFE
Thursday August 5 2021 The Star 27
To Will or not to Will?
Many people put off making a Will - it’s
almost as if making a Will acknowledges
one’s own mortality! But if you die
without a properly made Will, you are
said to have died intestate and your estate
will be settled according to the provisions
of the Administration Act (“the Act”).
Under the provisions of the Act your
estate will be divided in set proportions
amongst your surviving spouse, children
and/or immediate family. Almost
inevitably the result is that your estate is
divided in a manner different to how you
would have wished. On the other hand, if
you have made a Will, you can relax in the
comfort of knowing that your affairs will
be administered in accordance with your
wishes.
As well as dealing with your property,
your Will can also be used to give
directions as to your preference for burial
or cremation and the type of funeral
you desire. If you have young children,
you should always take the opportunity
to appoint a guardian to represent their
interests in the event of your sudden
death.
If you have a child with special needs
and it would be inadvisable for him or
her to receive a direct cash payment
from your estate, it is possible to set up a
Testamentary Trust in your Will, to ensure
that the child’s needs are met during their
lifetime. Upon their death, the remainder
of the capital and interest of the Trust can
then be divided among other beneficiaries.
Similarly, people will often choose to
leave their surviving spouse a life interest
only in their share of a house property
or other investments, so that they enjoy
the use of the asset (or the income from
it) during the remainder of their lifetime,
but on their death, the capital is passed to
the children of the relationship. This can
suit second or subsequent relationships
and can have the additional benefit of
the surviving spouse having less assets in

Even if you have a Will don’t forget that
it is a document that needs to be reviewed
from time to time as your circumstances
change. A good rule of thumb is to
review every five years or if something
significant happens in the meantime.
There are certain events which make it
absolutely essential to update your Will.
For example, if you marry or remarry,
your Will is automatically revoked, unless
it was made in contemplation of that
marriage. Likewise, if your relationship
comes to an end or your marriage is
dissolved, or if you have wound up
your Family Trust your Will should be
reviewed. Give Phillipa Shaw a call on

to discuss how a new Will would be of
benefit to you.

SENIORS’ LIVING LIFE
Amazing health miracles
from the silkworm
Serrapeptase an enzyme produced in
silkworms may become one of the most
widely used natural health solutions
for its ability to replace the majority of
anti-inflammatory drugs and bypass
operations. It is nature’s answer to pain,
chronic inflammation and clogged
arteries. Enzymes are essential for
life. Constantly working to build and
regenerate the body, they help digest
food, break down toxins and cleanse
the blood, in addition to thousands of
other functions. A lack of enzymes in the
body leads to food intolerances, allergies,
digestive issues, disease and poor health.
Studies show an average 70-year old has
only 20 percent of the enzymes found in
the body of a 20-year old.
Serrapeptase is a natural antiinflammatory,
which can clean, clear and
reduce inflammation while dissolving
non-living tissue including blood clots,
cysts, arterial plaque and mucus. One of
its major benefits is its ability to reduce
pain.
The serrapeptase enzyme was first found
in the intestine of the silkworm in the late
1960’s. The silkworm uses it to dissolve the
hard cocoon, allowing the moth to escape
as well as to digest the tough mulberry
leaves it feeds on. Serrapeptase can now be
produced commercially by a fermentation
process of the microorganism Serriata
E15. It is prescribed by doctors across
Europe and Asia.

Benefits from
the silkworm
Serrapeptase, an enzyme first discovered in the silkworm, could
become one of the most widely used natural health remedies due
to its ability to potentially replace the majority of anti-inflammatory
drugs & bypass operations.
Serrapeptase is a natural anti-inflammatory enzyme that according
to research can clean, clear & reduce inflammation while safely
dissolving non-living tissue such as blood clots, cysts, arterial
plaque & mucus. One of its major benefits is its ability to reduce
pain & clear clogged arteries.
SERRAPEPTASE SUPPORTS
• Inflammation relief, works on clearing the cause
• Pain relief
• Safely clearing the arteries of arterial plaque
that could lead to a heart attack or stroke

years have shown serrapeptase to have
remarkable benefits in a vast range of
health conditions including; blocked
arteries, cardiovascular, arthritis,
asthma, lung conditions, pain, tumors,
autoimmune disease and many more.
In Germany, Dr. Hans Nieper clinically
researched serrapeptase and found it
could clear blocked arteries and prevent
the need for bypass operations. U.K.
pharmacist Dennis Gore talked on BBC
radio about the dramatic results he has
had with serrapeptase. One case was a
man in his 60’s who had been a heavy
smoker, was wheeled into his pharmacy.
He was breathless due to emphysema
and COPD and could hardly talk. He
was on antibiotics, oxygen and getting
bad infections. Dennis prescribed him
serrapeptase and three weeks later the
man walked into his pharmacy, with no
wheelchair and no breathlessness and said
to Dennis he was no longer on antibiotics,
nor oxygen cylinders and was feeling
great.
Serrapeptase has been shown to be
very safe supplement and according
to researchers can be used with most
medications. However let your doctor
know as medications may need reducing
or stopping as the need for them reduces.

Golden Healthcare Group has developed
a strong reputation in Christchurch since
1985 for providing high-quality support to
its residents in aged care, and especially in
dementia care.
With seven facilities in the city, the
group has an understanding of the needs
and expectations of people moving into
a retirement setting, with staff who are
committed to making the transition the best
move of a person’s life.
Golden Healthcare general manager David
Sidaway says there is an emphasis on support
that is always present but never overbearing.
Heritage Lifecare owns the seven Golden
Healthcare facilities but has maintained
them as stand-alone operations that are able
to utilise the extensive experience of the
group’s operational team.
“We strive to ensure all our aged-care
residents are living their very best lives,”
David says.
“As a trusted aged-care provider, we have
enjoyed successful growth because of our
ability to nurture and grow environments
that feel like home. We promote inclusion,
interaction and strong community values.
“You can see it in the grounds. Staff and
residents take exceptional pride in the
gardens and outdoor areas, which are used
frequently, as are the many other resources
the facilities have on offer.
“Residents also benefit from clinical
support that has been carefully integrated
into services in order to provide a

BIG CLUB MATCH-UPS THIS WEEKEND
Hornets rebound to stay in title race
• By Chris Barclay
HALSWELL CLEARED the
first hurdle as they target their
first Canterbury Rugby League
premier grade grand final
appearance since 2014, and now
another sizable obstacle looms.
The Hornets bounced back
from a heavy loss to Hornby in
the final round of the regular
season to eliminate the Northern
Bulldogs – last year’s runners-up
– from Pat Smith Trophy contention
with a thrilling 28-22 minor
semi-final win after extra time
last weekend.
Composure down the stretch
was just what head coach Walter
Wilson craved as Halswell held
firm after Nick Evans broke a 22-
all deadlock through a try with
the final play in the first period
of extra time.
“We knew we had it in us to go
again, you could tell they were in
the moment,” Wilson said.
“The boys were pretty positive
throughout the whole week
training and when it came down
to another five minutes we just
had a bit of quiet confidence,”
Wilson said.
Confidence levels might
have been compromised after
Halswell copped a 64-12 hammering
by Hornby to complete
the regular season, though a
scan of the respective team lists
indicates the psychological scarring
was minimal due to a severe
injury toll.
Halswell were missing several
first choice players because of
knocks and age group representative
commitments, the bulk
of that personnel were back to
face the Bulldogs.
Wilson hasn’t dwelt on the last
match with Hornby, believing a
24-all stalemate in April was a
more reliable form line heading
into the preliminary final at
Leslie Park.
“The way we played on Saturday
(against the Bulldogs) we
weren’t scarred by the experience.
We had seven out the last
time we played Hornby,” he said.
Top qualifiers Hornby needed
a lifeline after they were edged
14-10 by champions Linwood,
who seek a fifth successive title in
next Sunday.
There will be a new set of
finalists in the 1st XV championship
competition with 2020
champions St Andrew’s College
and traditional powerhouse
Christchurch Boys’ High School
destined to miss next weekend’s
semi-finals.
St Bede’s College head into the
final round of the regular season
against St Thomas of Canterbury
College with a five-point buffer
over closest challenger Nelson
College.
St Thomas appear not quite
secure in third while Timaru
Boys’ High School should secure
a finals berth when they travel
to lowly mid-Canterbury Combined
in Ashburton.
Fifth-placed Christ’s College
can still force their way into the
post-season, though a 31-30 loss
to St Thomas last weekend could
yet sabotage those plans.
St Thomas hit the front with a

minute to play but missed a
handy conversion to give Christ’s
College a sliver of hope. They duly
scored after a stirring passage of
play only for the match-clinching
conversion to strike an upright.
Cashmere Technical are
through to the semi-finals of
the Chatham Cup following a
successful trip to the Waikato,
where they thrashed Hamilton
Wanderers 4-0.
Mainland Football premiership
golden boot winner
Garbhan Coughlan scored twice
while Luke Tongue also hit the
target before player of the match
Yuya Taguchi completed the rout
in added time.
The other successful quarterfinalists
were Miramar and Wellington
rivals Western Suburbs,
and North Shore United.
With the Chatham Cup taking
precedence last weekend, there
was only one Southern League
encounter, a catch-up game between
Coastal Spirit and Nelson
Suburbs.
Coastal Spirit recorded a
second straight 1-0 victory to
replace Cashmere Technical
in second spot behind Otago
University.
Harewood continue to set the
pace in Canterbury Hockey’s
premier league competitions
with after contrasting wins over
HSOB/Burnside.
The reigning champion women’s
team received the Rose Bowl
Trophy for the leading team at
the end of the regular season
after a 3-1 victory ensured they
could not be caught with a round
of fixtures remaining before the
play-offs.
Harewood’s men pipped
HSOB/Burnside 4-3 to hold a
one-point lead over champions
Marist as they vie for the President’s
Shield.
Lincoln University showcased
their championship-winning
qualities in Christchurch Netball’s
premier grade when the
title holders remained unbeaten
through a 54-47 victory over
second-placed University of Canterbury
on Tuesday night.
They are now the only
unbeaten team in section A
after four rounds; St Nicholas
and Kereru B set the pace in
the competition’s second tier
following wins over St Margaret’s
College and St Andrew’s College
respectively.

New identity looms for Kia Carnival
IN THE YEARS I’ve been writing
about automobiles, only on
very rare occasions has a badge
changed. Most car makers are
very keen to keep their brand
identity intact and protect their
image even if the design is many
years old.
It came as some surprise then
that Kia is in the process of
changing its logo, the new design
is more stylised and abstract
than before and is certainly a
departure from the original
and it is now a genuine point of
difference.
So, take a good look, is this
Carnival the last Kia I drive with
the old badge? I don’t know,
but what I do know is that even
though it is about to get a new
point of identity, it still shares
the concept that it has made it a
people mover of choice for many
families and service providers.
The Carnival multi-purpose
vehicle has been around for
many years, it has been a popular
seven or eight-seater and the new
model hasn’t lost sight of that
original concept, it is versatile and
practical, yet it also has dynamics
which often disguise its bulk and
concept.
The Carnival arrives here
with a 2.2-litre four-cylinder
turbocharged R-series diesel
engine that has earned itself a
healthy reputation for power
and economy in other Kia and
Hyundai models. The old V6
petrol engine that has given
faithful service throughout the
Carnival’s life is not available in
New Zealand now, diesel is all
you can get. However, to me that’s
a good thing, the R-series unit is
an absolute cracker, it is strong
and silent.
There are three specification
levels in Carnival – EX, Deluxe
and Premium. The range starts
at $59,990 and ends at $74,990
for the Premium as tested,
in-between the Deluxe sits at
$69,990.
In terms of figures, the twincamshaft,
16-valve diesel has
148kW and 440Nm power output
to consider, it is rated with a
6.5-litre per 100km combined
cycle fuel usage rating and it
accelerates to 100km/h in 8.8sec.
These are impressive figures
considering the Carnival weighs
in bulky at just over two-tonne.
Drive is channelled through an
eight-speed automatic gearbox
through to the front wheels.
Yes, the Carnival is two-wheeldrive
only, and that is one of the
reasons why it can’t be considered
a sport utility vehicle. Therein lies
further appeal, many SUVs don’t
get used to their full potential. If
you do have a need to transport
several occupants frequently,
then the Carnival will do that in
comfort and style, making full
use of its design role.
BOLD: Black wheels on the Premium model give the
Carnival a sporty look.
KIA CARNIVAL PREMIUM: Versatile eight-seater with adaptable seating configurations.
IDENTITY: Out with the old and in with the new - Kia’s
logo going forward (right).
It is also extremely practical,
the seating configurations are
many-fold, the centre row is
adaptable for easy access to the
rear, and the rear seats also fold
down deep into a cargo area for
increased interior load space.
Not only does the Carnival
have on-board versatility, access
is also easy with automatic sliding
doors on each side, and a high-lift
rear tailgate.
At the other end, the R-Series
diesel is a tireless worker, it
develops all of its power low in
the rev range at 3800rpm, and
if you take into account that the
area of peak torque lists from
1750rpm to 2750rpm, you don’t
need to constantly work the
engine, it is happy slugging it out
at low revs.
Power through the
transmission is well harnessed.
Shifts are quick and smooth,
while the ratios are structured
for that healthy acceleration time
and the ability to sip fuel gently
at open road speed – 6l/100km at
100km/h with the engine turning
over slowly at just 1650rpm. The
driver can also choose an active
economical driving mode that
eases the load on the engine for
fuel efficiency gains. Take into
account as well the Carnival’s
72-litre fuel tank, long distances
can be travelled before fill-ups are
necessary.
In Premium specification, the
Carnival is fully loaded with
kit, much of it new-generation
equipment. There’s also a healthy
level of safety kit, both passive
and active.
Features for convenience and
comfort include full leather trim,
satellite navigation, triple-zone
climate control, electric seat
adjustment (also heated and
cooled up front), heated steering
wheel and reversing camera. All
of these features are included
in an ultra-modern interior
that relies heavily on operation
through the central dash touch
screen command centre.
I took the test car on my
normal inland route – State
Highway 72 – the scenic route
through to Glenroy. At both low
and cruising speeds, the Carnival
has quiet motion and a beautiful
ride, the front-strut and multiplelink
rear suspension has soft
spring and damper rates and, as
such, they absorb ruts and bumps
well. That along with the strongly
bolstered seat cushioning means
the ride is more than plush.
• Price – Kia Carnival
Premium, $74,990
• Dimensions – Length,
5155mm; width, 1995mm;
height, 1775mm
• Configuration – Fourcylinder,
front-wheeldrive,
2151cc, 148kW,
440Nm, eight-speed
automatic
• Performance – 0-100km/h,
8.8sec
• Fuel usage – 6.5l/100km
There is a little trade-off when
it comes time to tackle our
country’s tight and twisty corners.
The Carnival is large, which
means there is a lot of vehicle to
get around a corner in the first
instance. The body leans over
the suspension thanks to its tall
centre of gravity; however, the
weight transfer is gradual and
doesn’t affect vehicle balance.
There aren’t a lot of vehicles of
this type new in the New Zealand
market, and to be fair, demand is
spasmodic.
However, Kia has stuck with
the Carnival, and for those who
do travel as a group it is the
perfect choice and one that will
gain recognition with a wide
cross-section of the community.
Kia has styled the Carnival so
that it will appeal with its shape,
it has attitude, disguising well
the van-like look that has often
accompanied multi-purpose
vehicles and people movers.

You are in the market for a new
property. You may have visited show
homes and open homes becoming
confused, overwhelmed or swept away
with emotional factors like having
everything new, or extra features such as
three car garaging.
To be happy with your choice, list the
features that you need, considering:
• Family space – Is there room for
the children to play indoors and for
television and entertainment units?
Should this be open plan or separated?
• Kitchen – What needs to be in your
kitchen? Is it a whim or something
that offers a practical solution to the
way you use your kitchen?
• Bedroom sizes – What are optimum
sizes? Smaller bedrooms may translate
to slightly lower building costs while
extra space can be useful.
• Garaging – A standard double garage
once two cars are parked there offers
little space for the toys. What toys
do you have and could they live with
the lawnmower in a garden shed, a
cheaper option to three car garaging?

• Size of land – Lifestyle properties
offer space for children, pets, hobbies,
an expansive garden and perhaps a
home-run business but they require
work so are not for everyone and
a compact section might be more
sensible if a tight budget or busy
lifestyle.
• Bathrooms – Second bathrooms are
great in homes with teenagers and a
wet shower room is ideal for young
children. A bath might be fashionable
though is often not used and its
absence could mean a more spacious
bathroom.
• Laundry – Would a laundry in the
garage do the job?
• Storage – How much storage do you
need? Weigh up what can truly be
stored in the garage once vehicles are
in, a preference in winter. Garages
vary in size so check the size to ensure
your vehicles will fit. Look also at
where else the house offers storage
capacity such as in hall cupboards,
a large hot water cylinder cupboard,
wardrobes, walk-in robe, attic storage
trusses, as well as the potential for
hooks and shelving in the garage for
bikes, tools, garden equipment and
even kayaks.
• Off-street parking – How many
vehicles can be parked on the
driveway? Will this space be sufficient?
• Garden - Is there sufficient space
for your children to play or for
entertaining?

A Job With A Difference
Carer Wanted
Hi There !!
I am a Quadriplegic guy living with my
partner in Ilam.
I am looking for people to join a small team
of Carers who assist me with various daily
things l am unable to manage on my own.
Sure, it is a job with pay, but I try to aim
for a rewarding experience as well. If you
have a good sense of humor and keen to
be in a friendly 1 on 1 situation where you
can use practical, common sense skills and
get the buzz of making a real difference to
somebody’s life then it may be for you.
At the moment, l am looking for a morning
person for Saturday and Sunday to do
showering etc. and someone on Monday
or Tuesday to do a Dinner and a Bedtime
(cook a meal and then pop me into bed).
The flexibility to be available at more than
one time can allow for doing more than one
particular area and can be a big advantage.
Think that this may be for you and want
more details then give me a call and we can
arrange to meet and have a chat.
