The lambs, mostly singles, were born the week of the Canterbury floods in lateMay; just afew hundred metresdown the road, theHinds River broke its banks and flooded areas of the town. Dave can hand feed most of his sheepmeat breed flock, including theTexel ram. He put alack of twins born this year down to the condition of the sheep at mating. There was limited feed even then, Dave said. The Thomsonslost just one lamb during lambing, and another four when the air temperature dropped just threeweeks later. It was also wet when they were born, but just too cold, Davesaid. The Thomsonshave been on the Windermere property for the past22years. It’s anine hectare block, with around25sheep bred for lambing in time to suit their dryland property. Along with their flock they have acouple of cattle andgrow lucerne or oats for horse char. Rose also has horses. Dave, aformer school teacher (30 years) turned real estate agent (19 years), can turn his hand at most jobs on farm. He does the shearingfrom aone andahalf pen shed. He was proudly “a Highlander by birth” and had a rural upbringing; his latefatherAllan was atruck driver buthad aflock of around 200 sheep. Davelearnedathingortwo fromhis dad. And whenthe Thomsons moved to MidCanterbury for Dave’s teaching role at Allenton School in 1975hetook his skills withhim. The annual survey released this week, surveyed 326 owneroperators and 124 herdowning sharemilking farms (50:50 sharemilkers) across New Zealand for the 201920 season. DairyNZ chief economist Dr Graeme Doole said operating profit, milksolids per cow and per hectare were all up on previous years. “For the 201920 season we were fortunate to receive an aboveaverage milk price of $7.05 per kilogram milksolids, which continued into the next season. ‘‘This enabled some farmers to catchup on farm maintenance and debt repayment, while continuing to invest in environmental improvement onfarm,” Dr Doole said. “Farm costs also increased, with higherfertiliser and supplementary feed costs. ‘‘Although we saw a decrease in interest costs, this was not enough to offset increases in other areasof expenditure.” The survey showed the average operating profitwas up 28 percent on the previous season,at$2750 per hectare for 201920, while milksolids per cow and hectarewere at their highest level to date. Operating expenses increased to $5.31 per kilogram milksolids (compared to 201819), which is above the previous high of $5.17 reported in 201314. “Feed continues to be the largestcost on New Zealand dairy farms,whichis important for farmers looking to control farm costs. ‘‘To buildtheir resilience for periods when milk prices are lower, farmers should look at theiroverall coststructures onfarm and identify where they can trimcosts,”DrDoole said. Sharemilkers experienceda good year, recording a35 percentincrease in operating profit on the previous season to $1050per hectare, while faced withsimilar cost changes, pricevolatility and weatherconditions.
