JOHN RADFORD
Welcome to Bristol Rovers’
president Wael Al-Qadi to One
Call Stadium for this historic first
match of the season.
Space does not permit me to express
my entire sentiments since I last
wrote to you via this programme
column, on 15 February 2020, our last
home league fixture against Newport
County where our supporters were
inside One Call Stadium.
Firstly, a huge welcome back to you
all. Football is not the same without
supporters, and our club hasn’t been
the same without you.
From me and Carolyn, a heartfelt
thank you to those of you who have
bought a season ticket for 2021/22.
Season ticket holders are the spine
of the Stags and the uptake in season
ticket sales this year has been
remarkable.
Carolyn and I have greatly missed
coming to matches and words cannot
express how thrilled we will be
when we drive into the car park this
afternoon, to see thousands of you
outside the ground in the build-up
to kick-off and then inside One Call
Stadium where I know you will make
a cacophony of noise that will be
heard from miles around.
The past 18 months have given us all
much cause to evaluate, think and
perhaps appreciate more than we did
previously.
Our love for the beautiful game
and all that it brings - a sense of
community, competitiveness and
purpose – has been reignited.
And though our love for Mansfield
Town has never wavered, what has
transpired in the past 18 months has
led us to appreciate it even more.
Whatever the score this afternoon,
and in the 45 league games
thereafter, I ask you to give Nigel, his
staff and players, your wholehearted
backing from start to end.
We should appreciate that we have
a club to support - which is in a good
place despite the challenges of the
pandemic - and that we are back
together today as one reunited club.
Enjoy your day at our beloved
NIGEL
CLOUGH
Welcome to Bristol Rovers’ season about to commence, along
manager Joey Barton,
with us competing in the FA Cup,
along with the staff, players and Carabao Cup and Papa John’s Trophy,
supporters from The Memorial we could be looking at a 55 to 60
Ground for this afternoon’s match. game season, so the depth of the
squad is important.
A special welcome to our supporters,
returning to One Call Stadium today
for a league fixture for the first time
in 540 days.
We had a taste of what it was like to
have fans back inside the ground 10
days ago when we played Coventry
in pre-season and we’re hopeful of
twice the number of supporters here
today, along with a good following
from Bristol Rovers.
Everyone always looks forward to
the start of a new season and with
the way things have gone in the past
18 months, the anticipation to start
this campaign is even greater than
most, and the players can’t wait to
get started.
We were pleased with the way we
finished last season, playing well and
scoring goals, and we want to build
on that this time around, reinforced
with our new players who have
integrated well into the squad.
We’re excited about the front six-toseven
players in the squad. We’ll set
up to attack and score goals, which
we did last season, and the emphasis
will be on our attacking play. With
this in mind, we’re probably light of
a defender, but overall, we’re very
happy with the players both from last
season and those who we’ve signed
in close and pre-season.
The strength of the squad will be
important over the next nine to 10
months. With our 46-league game
We hope that you will enjoy this
season and we want to give you
something to cheer about. We know
that you’ll resonate with and get right
behind a team that is determined
and works hard and we’ll be doing
everything possible to produce those
types of displays on a regular basis
this season.
Enjoy today’s game.
TICKET INFORMATION FOR COLCHESTER TRIP
Stags’ first away clash of the season
is a trip to Colchester United on
Tuesday 17 August, with a 7:45pm
kick-off.
Due to the ongoing coronavirus
pandemic, our hosts have introduced
a new ticketing system, meaning
tickets will unfortunately not be
available to purchase from the Stags’
ticket office.
In order to gain entry to the match,
Stags’ supporters are required
to purchase a ‘Match Permit,’
via Colchester’s online ticketing
platform.
Match permit prices are as follows…
Adult: Advance (one week before)
£20 | Matchday £22
Concession (NHS, armed forces, 65+,
disabled): Advance £15 | Matchday
£17
Under-18: Advance £11.50 |
Matchday £13.50
Carers for disabled supporters are
entitled to one free ticket for the
game.
No tickets will be available to
purchase in person or via telephone,
with the exception of ambulant and
wheelchair disabled supporters (on
DLA or PIP), who must purchase
tickets by calling Colchester United
on 01206 755161 between 10am and
3pm, Monday to Friday.
To purchase a permit, visit
colutickets.com and click ‘Register’
in the top right of your screen. Once
you have registered an account,
hover over the ‘Tickets’ section in the
menu bar and select ‘Match Tickets.’
After you’ve selected your seating
area, add the number of match
permits you would like to purchase.
You can also type in a ‘Bubble Name,’
which will allow you to sit with
members of your party. Please ensure
all members of your party use the
same ‘Bubble Name.’
Once you have filled in the relevant
fields when purchasing your match
permits, click ‘Next.’ You will be taken
to an order summary page, where
after reviewing your order, you can
click ‘Buy.’
After adding your card details and
clicking ‘Pay,’ you should receive a
confirmation email for the match
permits you have purchased. Then,
in the ‘Dashboard’ section of your
account, you should see the permits
you have purchased under ‘Match
Permits.’
Permits can be purchased up
until kick-off, but Colchester have
encouraged visiting fans to purchase
in advance of matchday to avoid any
last-minute issues. The turnstiles at
the JobServe Community Stadium
are equipped with scanners that
will read a permit from a printout or
mobile phone screen.
RECORD SEASON
TICKET SALES
Last week, we were delighted
to reveal that we have sold our
highest number of season tickets in
over a decade.
With the current figure standing at
2,502 (as of 12pm on Wednesday 04
August due to printing deadlines), it
means the club have recorded the
highest number of season ticket sales
since 2009/10, when 2,747 were sold.
Ahead of the much-anticipated
2021/22 campaign, following a term
behind-closed-doors and some
encouraging summer recruitment,
supporters were quick to take
advantage of season ticket prices
being slashed by up to 33%.
“This is a remarkable show of
support,” said Stags’ chief executive
David Sharpe.
“These sales reflect the dedication
and passion of the Stags’ fans ahead
of the new season. We’re hugely
grateful to every single season ticket
holder for their ongoing support.
“I witnessed first-hand last
Tuesday night for our friendly
against Coventry City how good an
atmosphere our supporters create
inside the One Call, and that was only
for a friendly.
“I can’t wait to hear the noise from
our supporters to cheer Nigel and the
boys on when we play Bristol Rovers
later this afternoon.”
Season tickets remain on sale and
are the most cost-effective way of
watching the Stags on a regular basis.
The club would like to thank
supporters for their patience as ticket
office staff worked through season
ticket enquiries over the last few
weeks.
THE
ACADEMY
Our aim is
to ‘evolve’
ACADEMY MANAGER RICHARD COOPER
Academy manager Richard
Cooper is aiming to ‘evolve’ the
academy this season, in its second
year of Category 3 status.
The EFL awarded Mansfield Town’s
academy Category 3 status in July
2020, meaning that eight additional
teams, from under-9s to under-16s,
now operate under the Stags’ name.
Looking ahead to the 2021/22
campaign, Cooper outlined his
plans for the new season, as well as
some challenges the academy may
encounter.
“We want to support the first team
operation where we can,” he told The
Stag. “We’ve seen glimpses of that in
pre-season with the academy players
who have featured.
“We’ll have to adapt a lot this year
because of COVID, because we’re still
not out of that. Darien [Wauchope]
has had to isolate recently and I think
that will be the case a few times this
season.
“I think for us, the main thing [this
season] is that we’re competitive on
a Saturday, which we were last year.
The team is fairly young, which is
great.
“We have some really high hopes for
some of our under-16s at the minute
and they’ll be given the opportunity
to play with the scholars on a
Saturday to keep pushing them.
“We have to keep trying to evolve
the academy as much as we can
this season. We’ve had one year as a
Category 3 Academy, and we want to
keep trying to push our schoolboys.
“The end goal has to be ‘how many of
these under-16 players can we turn
into scholars?’ We have to keep that
conveyor belt moving forward.
“From an academy point of view,
we’d love to see a first teamer who
has come throug the system be a
consistent starter in the XI. That to me
is probably the end goal.”
Reflecting on pre-season, Cooper
was delighted to see a multitude of
academy players appear for the first
team.
“When we first sat down with the
gaffer [Nigel Clough] when he joined
the club, the aim was getting the boys
to that first team a little bit earlier,”
he added.
“We’ve been doing that by playing
schoolboys at a higher age bracket,
getting them in and around the
games programme earlier.
“Hence why you’ve seen Taylor
Anderson play 25 games last year as a
16-year-old in the youth team.
“He had an unbelievable FA Youth
Cup experience, then this year he’s
been called to help the first team in
pre-season. He made that step up
brilliantly and it was great to see.
“Some of the performances from
George Cooper have been really
strong in pre-season and Nathan
Caine’s been finding the back of the
net. From that point of view, it’s been
brilliant.”
Mansfield Town’s under-18s began
their season away at Grimsby Town
earlier today.
ROOM
101
CAPTAIN OLLIE CLARKE
CONSIGNS HIS PET HATES
INTO ROOM 101…
PEOPLE: Two-faced people. I don’t like people who
say one thing and then say/do another. I prefer
people who say it how it is.
ENTERTAINMENT: Love Island. It’s a load of
rubbish. How can you fall for someone after just a
few days of knowing them? It’s too staged.
FOOD & DRINK: I’ll put
Sambuca into Room
101. Even the thought
of the smell makes
me feel ill. I had a bad
experience with it on my
first ever night out…. it
ended with my parents
having to pick me up
and me hanging out of
the back window!
MODERN LIFE: The cost of living for the ‘average’
person is too high. House prices, for example, are
too high compared to the average wage of a frontline
worker to enjoy a comfortable lifestyle.
WILDCARD: Politics. We’ve not been told the whole
truth about everything that’s happened in the past 18
months during the pandemic. The government haven’t
dealt with it well on the whole.
TECHNOLOGY: I don’t think people should be
allowed on social media unless they can verify
their identity by inputting either their passport
details or from some sort of identity card. They
should have to prove their identity before being
registered on social media platforms and this
would prevent certain people from getting away
with the abuse they put online.
Giving Football Back to
Small Business
At eBay, we know small business and
football clubs used to be like chips and
gravy, two peas in a pod – a match
made in community heaven.
Ironmongers, ship workers, spring
makers and cobblers, all formed clubs
which decades later are still prospering.
But nowadays, you’d think it was all
eyewatering transfers, Super Leagues
and mega sponsors, detached from the
humble origins of our historic clubs.
That’s why eBay are proud to support
300,000 small businesses who help
power EFL clubs nationwide. We’ll be
donating our advertising space to a lot
of these businesses – on match day
hoardings, around grounds and beyond –
throughout the coming season, to ensure
they can continue to thrive in our local
communities. So, join us in giving your
support to Small Business Power, because
today, they need us more than ever.
LADIES LOOKING STRONG
AHEAD OF NEW CAMPAIGN
Ladies’ club captain Monica
Bowley says the team being
built by manager Andi Bell is ‘one
of the strongest’ she has been
a part of during her time with
Mansfield Town.
After two null and void seasons, a
new-look ladies’ squad is now
itching to resume life in the East
Midlands Women’s Regional Premier
Division.
Bowley says that the intensity of
training sessions has been ‘upped’
in the lead-up to the new campaign,
with fixtures revealed for the 2021/22
season next Sunday.
“Since we’ve been able to start
playing again, we’ve been training
and had a few weeks of trials,
where we’ve seen a variety of
players come through the
door,” she told The Stag.
“We obviously want to
make the team better this
season, and we’ve had a
very strong set of players
come in, many who we’ve
played against before.
“The training sessions
have been upped, and
Andi [Bell, first team
manager] has brought
in some additional
coaches to help with
development.
“I think she’s now
decided which players
she’d like to keep. It’s
now about getting that team to blend
together ahead of the season.
“As a team, we want to aim to finish
as high as we can. Promotion is
always the top achievement.
“Over the years I’ve been here, I’ve
seen a variety of players come and
go, and I dare say that this is probably
one of the strongest teams I’ve been
a part of.
WE’VE HAD A VERY
STRONG “ SET OF
PLAYERS COME IN,
MANY WHO WE’VE
PLAYED AGAINST
BEFORE.
”
“Even I’ve thought, ‘I might not be
able to get in this team!’ Obviously
we have targets, but it’s about
doing the best we can and enjoying
ourselves.”
Reflecting on a difficult past year for
football and the wider world, Bowley
says that Mansfield
Town Ladies are now
‘excited’ to ‘get the
season going.’
“It’s been a tough
year-and-a-half.
We’ve been stopping and
starting with our football,
which has been the case for
everyone.
“It was hard to get going again,
but it was nice to see everyone
and get back playing again with
the couple of friendlies that
we’ve had.
“Now, it’s just about keeping
fingers crossed that everything
will stay as normal as it can. We’re
all excited to get the season up and
going now.”
ACTIVITIES GIVEN GREEN LIGHT
AFTER RESTRICTIONS LIFTED
Following the recent lifting of
coronavirus restrictions, Mansfield
Town’s Football in the Community
has been able to return to their
normal set of activities ahead of
the new season.
Running at full capacity, they are
now actively delivering PE sessions
at schools across Mansfield, which
include Wildcats and Premier Kicks
sessions at One Call Stadium, along
with Saturday all-day clubs for home
fixtures.
Football in the Community has also
just finished another year of their
BTEC Level Three Diploma/Extended
Diploma in Sports Coaching and
Development, finishing sixth in the
CEFA (Community and Education
Football Alliance) league.
In March 2020, the first lockdown
had a huge impact on the country
and many businesses, charities and
organisations across the UK. Football
in the Community was not exempt
from this and following government
guidelines, was forced to minimise
staff numbers and all activities.
With a skeleton crew, they began to
produce content digitally. April 2021
was the first time that the registered
charity was able to host a PE session
since October 2020.
However, it was not all doom and
gloom during the pandemic, as
communities began to connect
digitally.
Football in the Community ran a
number of lessons and quizzes
via Zoom, allowing them to stay
connected with their members
and continue to deliver important
sessions to the community.
Community manager Gary Shaw said:
“During the pandemic we had to find
different ways to connect, so it was
all via the computer.
“People could access sessions easily,
and they may even have been more
likely to join in online, rather than
face-to-face.”
SUMMER
HOLIDAY
CLUB
Open for ages five to 15, the
sporting activities in Football
in the Community’s Summer
Holiday Club are designed and
delivered by an expert coaching
team, with the aim of being fun,
interactive, and challenging in
equal measure.
Participants can enjoy a range
of activities, which are a great
way to stay active and make new
friends. Children who impress
in these sessions may even be
recommended to the Stags’
academy.
These sessions are held at
One Call Stadium, running
from 8:30am to 4pm. For more
details, including which days
the sessions will be held on, visit
As well as this, they are also
hosting summer sessions at St.
THE GOLDEN ARCHIVE
‘HIS STORY’
PROJECTING A PARADE OF GLORIOUS DAYS FROM
THE WORLD’S OLDEST PROFESSIONAL GROUND
From the sublime to the ridiculous
and everything in between, each
match, we look back with a Stags'
hero of the past, focusing on
memorable behind-the-scenes
moments they will never forget.
Kicking-off the season with ‘His-
Story’, is former midfielder Kevin
Kent, who played for the club from
1985 – 1991…
I nearly came to Mansfield 12 months
before I actually signed for the club.
I’d heard good things of the manager,
Ian Greaves, and was told how the
club made you feel really welcome.
However, I was offered a better deal
with Newport County, and ended up
signing for them. Upon telling Ian
Greaves my decision he told me that I
would only be offered the red-carpet
treatment once with the club - I left
thinking that door is now shut!
When I later did sign for the club,
I had to go to the manager cap-inhand.
He was renowned for being a
tough negotiator, and not the easiest
person to deal with. Consequently,
I was given a contract that was a
lot less than the one offered to
me 12 months earlier!
Shortly after, as a new signing,
I remember walking into the
changing room and thinking
I would do something for the
lads.
We had a treatment
table in the middle of the
changing room, and there
was a tray of mugs on it
but not one of them
had a handle on.
Being from Stoke, I had a few
connections, so I thought I’d get a
new Wedgwood set - even though the
lads told me not to bother. Anyway, I
went out and got a set of 24, and put
them on the table.
In the first match of the season, we
were 1-0 down at half-time.
Greavesy started filling the
mugs with red-hot tea and then
suddenly started throwing
them at everyone! Earlier I
had wondered why the lads
had covered all their clothes
with towels! Now it all
made sense to me, and I
understood why the lads
didn’t want new mugs
with handles on!
Another time, we
had a new signing
at the club. At
the time, George
Foster and Tony Kenworthy played
side-by-side, and always enjoyed
winding each other up.
With no social media back then,
players would arrive without us
knowing who they were, and I
remember when the changing room
door opened, I looked up and saw
this giant of a figure standing there
filling the doorway – hands like
shovels and feet to match!
It was Roddy Collins, brother of
Irish world champion boxer Steve.
Kenworthy clocked him standing
there, and whispered he was going to
wind George up. He shouted George
over saying Roddy had been brought
in to replace him!
George was now pacing around
saying that the manager hadn’t said
anything! He asked Roddy where he
played and before he could answer,
Tony blurted out “anywhere he
wants, have you seen the size of
him?” Everyone started laughing,
and George was later relieved to hear
Roddy was a centre-forward!
YOUR MATCHDAY PROGRAMME
For decades, the matchday programme
has been a quintessential part of the
football experience on a Saturday
afternoon and in mid-week.
We know how valued the programme is to a
number of our supporters and we have been
proud to see this publication win several
awards during the past few seasons for its
rich, varied content and appealing design.
Since the advent of the digital age,
programme sales at all professional football
clubs have steadily declined.
During the 2019/20 season – the last
campaign in which we saw fans inside
football stadia – The Stag made a negligible
profit.
As can be appreciated, the programme must
be cost-effective from a business standpoint.
For the reasons above, the club will
be using this season as a litmus test to
decide whether to continue producing a
programme. This will be totally subject to
sales.
We will endeavour to provide exclusive
content, where possible, and hope that you
continue to purchase The Stag regularly and
encourage others to do so as well.
The programme’s future relies on whether
supporters like you show a desire to keep
the programme as part of the matchday
experience. And for this publication to
continue, sales must increase this season.
Thank you for purchasing today’s edition.
We hope you enjoyed reading your copy of
The Stag.
