Optics
4VISA can supply optics and optical components to suit your individual needs. Regular optics with
diameters 17.5mm, 38mm, 47.7mm, 68.2mm, 94.5mm and 145mm are more commonly available
and can be supplied quickly. Materials offered plus transmission curves are listed here. Other optical

Fused Silica
Fused Silica is a high purity synthetic
silicon dioxide. This noncrystalline,
colourless, silica glass has excellent
optical qualities and broadband
optical transmission through deep UV,
visible to near infra-red. Various antireflective
coatings to match customer
reflectance requirements.
Quartz Natural Z-Cut
The mineral quartz, which is a
form of crystalline silicon dioxide is
birefringent and the Z-axis is the optic
axis. This Z-cut quartz is commonly
used in optical applications. The
material offers extended broadband
optical transmission through deep UV,
visible to near infra-red.

Sapphire
Sapphire optics offer broadband
optical transmission through UV, visible
to near infra-red. The single crystal
sapphire optics have excellent optical,
physical and chemical properties.
The hardest of the oxide crystals,
sapphire retains its high strength
at high temperatures. Various antireflective
coatings to match customer
reflectance requirements.
Magnesium Fluoride
Magnesium Fluoride transmits well into
the VUV region and is used mostly for
UV optics and is excellent for Excimer
laser applications. Magnesium Fluoride
is a tough material and is slightly
birefringent. Special AR coated optics
can be offered on request.

Calcium Fluoride
Calcium Fluoride has widespread IR
applications and is also useful in the
UV and as UV Excimer laser windows.
Degradation due to moisture in the
atmosphere is minimal and polished
surfaces may be expected to withstand
several years exposure to normal
atmospheric conditions. Low solubility
and wide transmission makes this
material useful for many applications.
Special AR coated optics can be
offered on request.
Zinc Selenide
Zinc Selenide optics are used widely as
IR windows. Zinc Selenide is one of the
materials of choice for CO2 laser optics
operating at 10.6μm. Optics with antireflective

Vacuum Heating Solutions
Application
With many laboratory or research & development tests, it is critical that
materials are free of gasses, water vapor, and other contaminants.
A vacuum bake-out is a process used to remove such contaminants.
Applying surface heat (normally up to 200˚C (392 °F)) is required to
successfully complete a vacuum bake-out process. The removal of
impurities allows vacuum-baked components to be used in ultra-high
vacuum or ultra-high purity systems without fear of contamination.
Heat is used to help release impurities and other contaminants, from
components in a closed system (vacuum chamber), while a vacuum
pump removes those impurities.
Solution
Custom cloth heating jackets are ideal heaters for
vacuum bakeout applications. They fit around the outside
of vacuum chambers to provide the necessary heat.
Vacuum chambers come in many different sizes and
shapes, often with complex shapes and multiple exterior
surface obstructions. Custom cloth heating jackets can
be designed and manufactured to fit almost any size
and configuration, ensuring intimate surface contact
for consistent heat across the entire heated area. The
built-in insulation maximizes efficiency, and reduces heatloss,
allowing them to safely operate at several hundred
degrees at very tight tolerances.
High temperature Samox® or PTFE cloth construction
provides extreme durability and long service life
under high temperature uses. The heating element is
BriskHeat’s patented multi-stranded heating element.
Several closure options are available to suit your needs
such as hook-and-loop closure (pictured), lace and boot
hooks, lace and grommets, or belts with D-Rings, making
them easy to install and easy to remove.
Further customization of cloth heating jacket includes:
• Redundant circuits to act as back up if the primary
element fails
• Non-ferrous components for research and
experimentation that include magnetic fileds
• View ports to observe the chamber’s interior during an
experiment
A total solution for using cloth heating jackets includes
choosing the right temperature control system. SDX,
or the MPC2 Multipoint Temperature Control
Panel are designed to provide control needed for vacuum
bake-out. The amperage load, heater configuration and
environment will determine the best solution for your
application.

Additional Product
For laboratory or R&D experiments necessitating
high wattage and very high temperatures,
Mineral Insulated (MI) is recommended. MI
cable is semi-rigid and electrically insulated
using Magnesium Oxide (mineral) to ensure
safe electrical insulation with maximum thermal
transfer. MI cable has maximum exposure
temperature of 1000°C (1832°F) and a 250
W/m (76.2 W/ft) watt density.

Measuring Cylinders
Measuring cylinders are used for measuring volumes of mobile liquids. For viscous liquids or semisolids
a conical measure is easier to use. There are a variety of types and styles of measuring
cylinder.
For basic measurement of liquids in qualitative work a Class B cylinder is sufficient. For more
accurate measurement of liquid a Class A cylinder is appropriate. These are calibrated to half the
tolerance of Class B cylinders and each has a unique serial number for traceability. A certificate of
accuracy traceable to national standards can be provided if required. Class A cylinders are used in
analytical labs, quantative labs, and other controlled environments. They are not suitable for work
which requires accuracy of less than 1%. For this a bulb pipette (0.2%) or a gravimetric method
(0.0001%+) should be used.
Stoppered cylinders are used for making up solutions where it is important to homogenize the liquid
by shaking. They are also useful for measuring volatile
solvents where significant evaporation might occur if the liquid is exposed to air.

Filters
Baskets
These baskets, manufactured in the UK by Croft Filters, make
up one of the most widely used range of filters used to separate
solids from liquids. With a well-established design, each filter
comprises an assembly of a perforated metal cylinder or cone that
supports one or more layers of very fine wire mesh. To increase
their structural strength, the filters can also be manufactured
with two perforated cylinders with one or more layers of fine wire
mesh sandwiched between them, reducing the open area and so
enabling the filtration of very fine impurities. The filters are inserted
in a hollow body (known as a filter housing) in the path of the fluid
flow, parallel to the flow, forcing the fluid to pass through the filter
media. The size of the wire mesh required depends upon both the
type of fluid to be filtered and the size of the impurities. These types of filters can provide a very
high degree of separation with little change in the pressure drop across them. They must be cleaned
or backwashed to prevent substance build-up – something which would gradually affect the filters’
performance. Please inform us if the filters you require will need to be backwashed or to withstand flow
in both directions.
Cones
Commonly used in a number of industry sectors, these filters can
be manufactured in almost any size and specification, using a wide
variety of materials. Usually placed inline in a fluid stream, they
are generally used for high-velocity fluid flow applications. Their
design includes a perforated cone supporting one or more fine wire
meshes, as per the filtration requirement. Witches’ hat strainers
are the most common type of conical filters used in industry, due to
their well-established design and effective filtration qualities. They
do, however, have a higher-pressure differential across them than
other kinds of filters. The load is also distributed unequally, since
the flow is directed to the central position of the filter. Nonetheless,
the low open areas make these filters very popular for all kinds of
industrial applications – as does the simplicity of design.

Witches Hats
Witches’ hat filters can be composed of layers of wire cloth to
create a filter material with higher strength and rigidity. The
multilayer meshes form an ideal uniform filtration structure. The
material and structure maximise the flow area, effectively reducing
resistance and ensuring reliable operation. Witches’ hat strainers
can be used for softening, desalination, water filtration and water
pre-treatment systems, as well as less demanding water supply
and oil fine filtration equipment. They are primarily used to provide
a filtering layer that removes solids suspended in water, oil and
adhesive resin. The filters can be manufactured for a wide variety
of applications. In 316 stainless steel, they can be made with a
pore size of as little as 1 micron, using a single mesh or a number
of meshes to achieve the required micron rating.

The Quick Release Inline Filter is a very popular filter and has a
widespread usage in applications within industrial sectors such as
Food, Oil & Gas, Power Generation, Chemical and Marine amongst
many others. Available in many different fittings makes this
arrangement highly desirable as it can be made to fit straight into
your existing application with ease. Providing some flexibility has
been allowed upon installation, it is very easy to remove the internal
filter disc for cleaning or replacement. A quick release clamp allows
separation of the two halves with little effort. You have a choice to
use the internal filter disc as provided or to combine it with mesh to
achieve different levels of the filtration as required.
