GC Chamber wants 

events on Broadway

Ed Fleming, the president of the Grove 

City Area Chamber of Commerce had a 

clear message for city leaders — bring signature 

events back to Broadway. 

Fleming spoke at the Aug. 2 Grove City 

Council meeting. 

“The shops need events on Broadway,” 

said Fleming. “The businesses need our 

help.” 

The chamber hosts several events that 

have traditionally been located along 

Broadway, like the Farmers Market and 

Arts in the Alley. The market has been 

moved off Broadway but is still in the 

downtown area. Last year, due to COVID-

Making a positive impact

Financial stability was always out of 

reach for the parents of Gary Leasure. 

Recalling their times of struggle, 

Leasure said they did the best they could 

with what they had but it was not easy to 

watch them have to choose between paying 

the bills or paying to put enough food 

on the table. 

“It was rough,” he said. “We all had a 

rough time of it.” 

While his mother and father may have 

lacked financial wealth, they raised their 

children to know the importance of emotional 

richness. 

“We grew up knowing that you can’t 

always throw money at things to make it 

better,” said Leasure. “But what you can 

do is lend an ear, volunteer your time, or 

just be a decent person to others, especially 

in their time of need.” 

As Leasure grew older and found some 

success of his own, he made a promise that 

he would continue to live up to those 

lessons he learned in childhood and keep 

putting them to action for as long as he is 

“blessed” to live on this planet. 

Friends of his say he has lived up to 

that promise and that is what makes him 

so deserving of the recognition he received 

last month by his beloved adopted city and 

a local civic organization. 

On July 23, the city of Grove City and 

the Grove City Rotary Club hosted a presentation 

in council chambers to recognize 

Leasure as the 2021 recipient of the 

Service Above Self Award. According to 

rotary president Ronnie McClure, this 

award recognizes an unknown or unsung 

resident who has “made or left a lasting 

impact for the betterment of the community, 

state, nation, or world.” 

“I think Gary exemplifies all of those 

traits,” he said. 

McClure said he has known Leasure 

since he was a child and has always 

known him to be “a great man.” 

“I remember going into the business he 

owns (Ace Truck Body Inc.) to buy parts 

for our snowplow with my dad,” he said. 

“He was always helping.” 

But owning and operating a successful 

business is not what made Leasure rise 

out of the candidate pile for the Service 

Above Self award, added McClure. 

Instead, it was his body of work outside of 

his company that put him alongside the 

company of past recipients Leslie Bostic, 

Steve Jackson, Sherol Saxton Mulligan 

and Tiney M. McComb. 

“He has been involved in just about 

everything you can think of since he 

moved here,” said McClure.

Doug Wallace, a rotarian who nominated Leasure for 

the award, said that about sums up his friend of more than 

four decades. 

“He’s always involved in something to make the community 

a better place to live.” 

In 1978, Leasure and his family moved to Grove City 

from Zanesville in order to grow their business. Though he 

had been involved in that city’s government serving as a 

council member and its mayor in the late 1960s and early 

1970s, he swore he would not get involved — or too involved 

— in the happenings of his adopted city. 

“It was just going to be about the business,” said 

Leasure. “I didn’t want to get involved with the city government; 

I didn’t want to do any city committees. I just 

wanted to volunteer with some groups that I liked and that 

would be that.” 

Then he met Tiney M. McComb, a local banker and 

notable civic leader, who needed help raising funds for 

flood victims in his home state of West Virginia.

“Well, I got involved in that effort, and then I couldn’t 

stop myself from getting involved in more.” 

Throughout the decades, Leasure was active in the 

Grove City Area Chamber of Commerce, the Grove City 

Planning Commission, the Westland Area Business 

Association’s board of directors, the South-Western City 

Schools Educational Foundation, and the South-Western 

City Schools board of education. 

Leasure said his willingness to get involved in the latter 

came as a surprise to him. 

It was the early 1990s, and Leasure had seen multiple 

operating levies and bond issues fail. Knowing how much 

these failed issues were harming the children in the growing 

community, he made a comment to one of the campaign 

organizers and was challenged with doing it better. 

In 1994, he led a successful campaign to pass an 8.9- 

mill operating levy — “he became known as ‘The Sign Guy’ 

because he always had signs in his truck,” said Ron 

Hutcheson, the former athletics supervisor at Grove City 

High School — and two years later he was recruited 

to run for a seat on the board of education. 

“It was only going to be for a term,” he said. “I 

ended up serving until 2007.” 

He said there were a lot of “ups and downs” during 

his tenure on the board but he loved every 

minute of it.

According to Fleming, foot traffic to Broadway businesses 

have declined with the Farmers Market held off

“We are hoping for a return to normalcy,” said 

Fleming. “We have to figure out how to make it happen.” 

It was several years ago that city leaders decided to 

extend Columbus Street to connect the downtown with 

the Beulah Park property. This work includes the closure 

of Grant Avenue at the railroad tracks, which 

would cut off the normal Broadway detour route. 

“We’ve had discussions about this for the last four

“The people in this community are just as passionate as 

I am about doing right for these kids,” he said. “We didn’t 

always see eye-to-eye, but we always talked about how we 

could all improve.” 

Leasure said his health has caused him to “slow down a 

bit with the volunteering” but he has been able to continue 

contributing to the community he loves. 

Recently, friends said he purchased a pitching machine 

and new uniforms for the baseball teams at Franklin 

Heights High School, and he even contributed hundreds of 

thousands of dollars toward the purchase of a new artificial 

field at the football stadium at Grove City High School. 

Leasure said he hopes the whole state will be able to 

benefit from that new field. 

“I hope to see hundreds of bands take part in competitions 

there once again,” he said. 

Leasure said he does not do anything — whether it be 

lending an ear, volunteering his time, or donating money — 

for praise or recognition. 

“While I am honored to receive the Service Above Self 

Award, frankly I feel they should have given it to someone 

more deserving than me.” 

Long-time friend Dave Burris said he could think of no 

one else more deserving of recognition than Gary Leasure. 

“He is the most giving person I have ever met in my 

life,” he said. 

City Administrator William Vedra. “There is no viable 

detour.” 

Vedra cited safety concerns as the reason to move 

the events off Broadway. 

He said the latest traffic count reports that 26,000 

vehicles travel through Broadway each day. He said 

that volume of traffic is too high to put a detour 

through residential areas in the city. He said the city 

cannot have semi trucks traveling through town navigating 

small, residential streets. 

“It’s not fair to the neighborhoods,” said Vedra. “We 

had to look at the greater good and safety.” 

Though the city’s administration made the decision 

to move the events off Broadway, some city council 

members support bringing events back to the main 

thoroughfare. 

Councilman Roby Schottke said many 

communities shut down major routes for big 

events. 

“It’s part of that hometown feeling,” he 

said. 

Councilman Ted Berry said he too favors 

those events back on Broadway. 

“What will it cost or what will it take to 

make this happen,” Berry asked. 

Berry asked the city’s administration to 

put forth a plan that could safely move the 

events back to Broadway. 

Grove City Mayor Richard “Ike” Stage 

said there is no budget on how to fix it. He 

said the city does not have a safe detour. 

“It was understood when we started talking 

years ago, that changes were necessary,” 

said Stage. “We are in a transition 

time.” 

The mayor also said it had been suggested 

that the chamber of commerce relocate 

its events to the redeveloped Beulah property, 

but that suggestion was declined 

because chamber leaders wanted to keep 

the events downtown. 

The 42nd annual Arts in the Alley will be 

held Sept. 18-19.

Mayor Richard “Ike” Stage announced 

the appointment of Kevin Teaford as safety 

director for the city of Grove City, reporting 

to Deputy City Administrator William 

Vedra Jr., currently serving in both positions. 

The safety director manages both the 

city’s division of police and building division. 

Teaford’s law-enforcement experience 

spans more than 35 years with the Ohio 

State Highway Patrol and most recently 

served as lieutenant colonel and assistant 

superintendent responsible for all highway 

patrol operations. 

“Law enforcement is a vital element of 

every community’s quality of life and Mr. 

Teaford’s extensive experience will be a 

valued addition to our team,” said Stage. 

Grove City has been home to Kevin and 

his wife, Becky for more than 20 years. 

“Having spent the last 35 years serving 

the citizens of Ohio, I truly appreciate the 

value and motivation of public service,” 

said Teaford. “The opportunity to serve the

Jackson Township’s long delayed plans to bring new 

playground equipment to its neighborhood parks is back 

on track. 

At the Aug. 3 board meeting, township administrator 

Shane Farnsworth announced that Tanglebrook Park and 

Emersonia Park are set to receive its highly anticipated 

play area shortly. 

“We will be receiving the playground equipment next 

week,” he said. 

The township had placed an order for the equipment 

earlier this year, hoping that it would be installed before 

the summer, but a warehouse fire at the manufacturing 

plant put those orders on hold for several months. 

While the news of upgraded play equipment will be 

seen as a good thing for area children and their parents, 

not everyone was as excited about the announcement. 

Burley Dunn lives in the Emersonia subdivision, which 

is located just off of McComb Road. His house is near the 

park where this new equipment will be installed and he 

has concerns that the influx of children could cause a 

potential problem. 

“It’s already a dangerous area,” he said. “And my 

biggest fear is that something bad will happen 

while they are going to the park or coming back 

from the park to get home.” 

According to Dunn, there has been a sharp 

uptick of motorists who have been plowing through 

the stop signs posted on Lois Drive and 

Charlemagne Street, the two residential roads closest 

to the park. He said in the past week, he has 

seen more than five close calls between motorists 

and children going to the park on foot or on bike. 

“It’s not just the children who are in danger,” he 

said. “I see adults walking, people in their wheelchairs, 

and they almost get hit by these cars too. 

“People deserve the right to ride their bicycles

Friends of Southwest Public Libraries will host its 

second annual Pathway to Literacy Virtual 5K. 

Participants can run, walk, or ride a bike anytime 

and walk safely, and it is becoming a big problem here.” 

He said it is his biggest fear that someone will be killed 

by the motorists who are not heeding the stop signs. 

Dunn attended the Aug. 3 meeting with a request: that 

the trustees consider installing speed bumps on Lois Drive 

and Charlemagne Street. 

“You wouldn’t have to put it in the middle of the road, 

that is not what I am asking,” he said. “I would like for you 

to consider placing them at the stop signs before people get 

killed.” 

Farnsworth said they would have to ask the county 

engineer for their input as the township’s hands are largely 

tied on this matter. 

“We cannot do anything that would create a hindrance 

on the road,” he said after the meeting. 

Trustee Dave Burris said they could ask the Franklin 

County Sheriff’s Office to run more patrols in the area, but 

added this issue is widespread. 

Dunn said the patrol cars have been in the area, and he 

commended the deputies for stepping up. 

“One of the deputies spent close to two hours out there 

after I called,” he said. “The problem is these drivers act 

real cool and follow the rules when they see their patrol 

cars.” 

He said he doesn’t know of any other solution beside the 

installation of speed bumps. 

“Something has to be done,” he said.

Q: What are floaters and what causes them? 

A: Floaters are small dark shapes that move across your vision. They can appear 

as dots, threads, squiggly lines, or even like cobwebs. Most floaters are caused 

by normal changes in the eye. As you age, small strands of vitreous (gel-like fluid 

that fills your eye) can clump together and cast a shadow on your retina (the 

light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye). Those shadows appear as floaters 

that drift across your vision. You may notice floaters more when you look at a 

bright background, like a computer screen or a blue sky. 

Q: How often should someone with new 

floaters get an eye exam? 

A: Someone experiencing new floaters, a large increase in the number of floaters, 

or flashing lights should see an eye care professional immediately. Sometimes 

floaters have a more serious cause, including: infection, injury, inflammation, 

bleeding, retinal tear or retinal detachment.

A Grand Champ 

Ellie Edwards, of Grove City, raised the Grand Champion Pen of 3 Broilers at the 

Madison County Fair this year. This is the second year in a row that Edwards 

received this title. This is her ninth year showing poultry. She is a member of the LFS 

4H Club. Edwards was also named the 2021 Equine Ambassador and gave tours of 

the fair and passed out ribbons. Edwards graduated from Central Crossing High 

School in 2020. 

Alpha is a 6-year-old 

boy who hopes to 

find his forever family. 

He loves to go out for 

long walks and loves 

a good game of fetch. 

Alpha is an intelligent 

dog. He is eager to 

learn and even 

knows some commands 

in French. Alpha is available for adoption

Funding from Franklin County helps Mid-Ohio Food Collective to expand 

Last week, the Franklin County Board 

of Commissioners funded a new expansion 

at the Mid-Ohio Food Collective via a $7 

million grant to add a 19,000 square-foot 

addition to the foodbank’s facility in Grove 

City. 

The grant is made up of funds from the 

American Rescue Plan, of which Franklin 

County will receive more than $255 million 

over the coming two years. The new addition 

will include a 14,000 square-foot freezer 

that will double storage and picking 

locations, and four new dock doors for loading, 

unloading, and handling perishable 

foods. 

“Many of our neighbors have been badly 

hurt by the pandemic and its effects on the 

economy. This grant is an investment to 

support them as they work their way back 

to where they were before, and because no 

one should be hungry in a community like 

ours,” said board of commissioners president, 

Kevin Boyce. 

The Mid-Ohio Food Collective handles 

more than 66 million pounds of food per 

year and provides more than 140,000 meals

Hundreds of residents attended the 

hearing, either in person or virtually, and 

more than 30 residents spoke, while dozens 

more provided feedback via email.

in their time of need, and the Mid-Ohio 

Food Collective has been a critical support 

to so many residents throughout the pandemic,”

Voters select Carey and 

Russo in primary election 

Republican Mike Carey topped a field of 

11 candidates in the Aug. 3 primary election 

to select candidates to run for Ohio’s 

U.S. 15th Congressional District seat. 

Also, Democrat Allison Russo defeated 

Greg Betts and will run against Carey to 

see who will fill the seat that was left 

vacant when former U.S. Representative 

Steve Stivers, a Republican, resigned on 

May 16 to serve as president and CEO of 

the Ohio Chamber of Commerce. The primary 

winners in their respective parties 

will face off against each other in the general 

election on Nov. 2. 

Carey defeated John Adams, Eric Clark, 

Thad Cooperrider, Ruth Edmonds, Ron 

Hood, Thomas Hwang, Stephanie Kunze, 

Jeff LaRe, Bob Peterson, and Omar Tarazi. 

The Ohio 15th Congressional District 

includes Clinton, Fairfield, Hocking, 

Madison, Morgan, Perry, Pickaway, and 

Vinton counties as well as parts of Athens, 

Fayette, Franklin, and Ross counties.
