Each year, the New Alsace
Conservation Club sends
several incoming sixth- and
seventh-graders to Conservation
Officer Youth Camp,
providing education and training
for boating and hunters
education. Since conservation
camp didn’t occur last year,
some incoming eighth-graders
were able to attend as well.
Four Guilford and Yorkville
residents were fortunate to attend
camp: Isaac Hengehold,
Colton Lewis, Molly Lewis,
and Nora McCarty. While
the camp provided children
an opportunity to engage in
many outdoor activities, the
camp leaders who are conservation
officers, also instilled
respect by teaching camp
attendees to address adults as
“sir” or “ma’am,” and electronic
devices were banned.

shared that throughout the
week, they participated in
several events, including two
days of hunters education
classes that included shooting

as rifles and handguns. Two
days were spent on water
safety, including riding jet
skis, airboats, testing a scuba
diving mask, and learning
what to do in the event you
were flipped over in a canoe.
Each child took tests, earning
his/her hunter’s education and
boater’s education certificates.
Small game was eaten as well,
including turkey, goose, and
pheasant soup.
Isaac’s favorite part of camp
was range day where he shot
a muzzleloading shotgun.
Molly also enjoyed shooting
range day, especially learning
how to shoot guns and gun
safety. Colton enjoyed a “fun
day” where the campers were
divided up into four teams
and played a variety of games.
Nora was awarded the Camper
of the Year Award. What an
amazing experience for Isaac,
Colton, Molly, and Nora!
The town of Guilford is
well-known for the Guilford
Covered Bridge Park,
nestled alongside Tanners
Creek. While being located
near a creek provides beautiful
scenery, it also means the
area is susceptible to flooding.
On June 18 and 19, the area
experienced an unsurmountable
amount of rain in a
short period of time, causing
flooding in the Guilford
Covered Bridge Park and
several homes located along
Main Street. The York-Miller

hours, pumping water out of
homes and aiding those whose
homes were damaged by flood
waters. One of the reasons
why I love our community is
how so many people stepped
up to help their friends and
neighbors. Donations were
collected at Widolff’s General
Store and the Miller-York
annual chicken dinner and car
show. Greg Callahan also organized
donation collections,
such as home items, to help
residents replace items damaged/lost
from the flooding.

Sawdon Ridge Road is the
place to be if you are entering
livestock and projects in
the 4-H Fair at the Dearborn
County Fairgrounds. Two
farms on this scenic ridge had
successful entries this year.
A farm purchased in 1950 by
Grover and Mary Jane Sefton
and the other farm owned by
Gary and Laura Gellert are
right across the road from one
another. Kari Klem, greatgranddaughter
of the Sefton’s
and oldest daughter of Brian
and Chris Klem won Second
Place with her gilt (less than
six months old pig) and took
fifth place with her barrow
pig, and Reserve Campion
with her Creative Writing.
Emily, Kari’s younger sister,
took Second Place with her
gilt, First Place with her barrow,
and had two steers that
each won Second Place, one
of which earned Champion
Homegrown. “Homegrown”
means the animal is from
their farm, not purchased
from someone else. She
also had Champion with her
Woodworking project, which
is going to the state fair.
The Gellert Farm has the
honor of being a Hoosier
Homestead Farm. This award
program was instituted by

Ten dodgeball teams recently
filled the Aurora Recreation
Center to raise funds for the
‘Aurora Fill the Pool’ campaign.
Manchester studentathletes,
Easton Schumann
and Shanna Tschaenn joined
in a good old-fashioned dodge
ball tournament to support this
good cause. Easton teamed up
with the Berry family to battle
the nine other groups, including
teams from South Dearborn
soccer and football. Their
entrance fees went toward the
new Aurora community pool.
In addition to the fundraiser,
the teams fought for the bragging
right to be named Aurora
Dodgeball Champion! The
event was organized by South
Dearborn’s JAG (Jobs for
America’s Graduates), led by
sponsor Monica Berry.
Monica shared that the event
was a great success – so much
Brian, Chris, Kari and Emily Klem.

referees. Coming together with
students and families from the
community to raise money for
the Aurora Pool was an awesome
experience. I can’t wait
to do the next tournament!”
Player Easton Schumann
said, “Playing dodge ball
was a lot of fun, and I’m glad
we were able to raise some
money to fill the pool.” And,
in the spirit of a true competitor,
he added, “I just wish
my team would’ve won the
tournament!”
