Mike was knocked of his bike on Gerald St, Lincoln, which he says has become super dangerous for cyclists. He wants the district council to repriortise a planned cycleway which won’t now be put in until the 2027/28 financial year. Lincoln University student Ye Yuan is backing him, and she has good reason to. Ye was knocked off her bike two years ago. We publish the dramatic photos today. Police have focused on a group of teenagers from Christchurch in connection with the incident on Birchs Rd. The victim, aged in his 70s, heard a noise on his property about 9.20pm and went outside to find his shed Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz Police talk to teenager over assault • By Susan Sandys POLICE HAVE made a major breakthrough in a spate of car thefts in the district – some of which were used to ram parked vehicles for fun. Senior Sergeant Dean Harker said police were speaking to a number of youths who “are assisting us with our investigation.” The offending began about two months ago, he said. There were a number of youths involved from Selwyn, breaking into and stealing cars in the district and in Christchurch. “The number of vehicles would be well into double figures,” Harker said. The youths were also allgedly responsible for ramming a number of vehicles parked on the roadside in Lincoln. There had also been vehicles stolen from around Christchurch and left abandoned in Lincoln and the surrounding areas. “This is still under investigation. No charges have been laid as yet and we are still collating all of the offences,” Harker said. The Selwyn Times understands being broken into. A youth aged about 16 to 18 was holding a petrol can. Three other youths ran from the shed and the elderly man was punched in the eye. Youth crime unit Constable the teenagers have been copycatting a trend in other parts of New Zealand, where groups of youths target specific cars, steal them and then brag about their exploits. Harker would not say how police were able to identify the Patrick Sullivan in Christchurch said police had followed up on a tip after the screening of Police Ten 7. “We have spoken with and will be speaking to more people of interest,” Sullivan said. Car theft breakthrough group believed to be responsible for the thefts and vehicle ramming in Selwyn. A Lincoln resident told the Selwyn Times he was out for his regular nightly walk two weeks ago when a vehicle almost lost control on Southfield Drive. He had been subsequently told it was likely to have been stolen. “I could hear it coming. As it approached Ryelands Drive from the Te Whariki end, the driver almost lost it. I stopped (on the footpath) as it came towards me. I could see its right wheels lift slightly and I thought: ‘It’s going to flip’. “I knew I’d have a split second to decide which way I was going to go to avoid it. But the driver held the car down and it kept going at pace along Southfield.” NEWS 3 Altering supermarket labels earns man trespass • By Susan Sandys A 65-YEAR-OLD Selwyn man has admitted altering labels on goods at a local supermarket, police say. Senior Sergeant Dean Harker said in the last few months the man had swapped labels on goods on about 14 occasions, in order to get the benefit of lower prices. “Customers need to be aware that the self-serve checkout’s computer systems and cameras are very smart,” Harker said. Checkout computer systems not only work on weight to pick up discrepancies, but also barcodes, products and labels. The goods were a variety of products, mainly those packaged in-house. CCTV footage was also used. “Once identified, it is a simple exercise for the supermarket staff to review transactions and security cameras,” Harker said. The alleged offender will appear before a community justice panel, or the district court. He has also been trespassed from the supermarket for two years.
