JOHN RADFORD
Welcome to Newport County
chairman Gavin Foxall to One
Call Stadium for today’s match.
I can scarcely recall an opening
day fixture like last Saturday. To
score a last-gasp, match-winning
penalty in front of a bumper Stags’
crowd - following the absence of our
supporters for almost 18 months –
made it an extraordinary afternoon.
Football is made for moments like
this.
Well done to Oli Hawkins and Danny
Johnson for getting off the mark.
Our defence also looked assured last
Saturday, limiting Bristol Rovers to
minimal goalscoring chances. And
despite conceding an equalising goal
to an outstanding strike, we looked
pretty solid in the season’s first
outing.
My hope and wish is that this
afternoon’s crowd is of a similar
number to seven days ago and that
the raucous atmosphere can again be
generated in the home stands.
You created an incredible atmosphere
inside the stadium. Our players will
feed off this type of environment
inside One Call Stadium and we must
maintain it throughout the remainder
of the campaign, in good games and
bad.
I referred to our season ticket
holders in my column last week and
reiterated my gratitude to you for
your commitment for 2021/22. The
total number of season tickets sold is
now 2,551, which demonstrates the
loyalty we have amongst our fanbase.
As you may have seen recently,
this figure is the highest number of
season tickets we have sold in over a
decade, which bodes well for our club
heading forward.
NIGEL
CLOUGH
Welcome to Newport County fruition as the season progresses.
manager Michael Flynn,
along with the staff, players and
supporters from Rodney Parade for
this afternoon’s match.
Thank you, firstly, for supporting us
last weekend.
You created an outstanding
atmosphere for the players to play in.
If you were to measure opening day
fixtures, our encounter with Bristol
Rovers last Saturday would be right
up there with the most special.
To win in the 95th minute in the
manner that we did, with our
supporters back inside the stadium
after 18 months, it made for a
memorable afternoon at the One Call
Stadium.
This was only one match and it won’t
determine our season, but it felt more
than that, given the occasion.
We know we can play better than
we did, but we can understand
the nerves for the first game of the
season, especially with fans returning
to the stadium.
With that noted, we were largely in
control of the game and did enough
to win. Only a wonder-strike got them
back into the match and we put the
pressure on after they went down to
10 men and created a few chances to
get our reward in the end.
We found a way to win and
restricted a good team to very few
opportunities.
We can get the ball down and play
more, like we have done in preseason,
and I’m sure this will come to
I actually thought we played better
at times in mid-week against Preston
North End, in the Carabao Cup, than
we did on Saturday. But we were
bitterly disappointed with two of
the goals conceded on Tuesday.
Both were avoidable goals and they
changed the game. We could have
worked their goalkeeper more than
we did but we were more than in the
game up until the second goal.
Despite Oli Hawkins and Danny
Johnson being on the bench, we
picked a team win the game and I
thought we had enough in the 11 to
do that.
Nevertheless, we return to league
action today against a Newport
County side who are always strong
competitors under Mike Flynn.
But it will be down to us to produce a
performance worthy of winning this
game, with our hope of sending you
home happy by 5pm today.
Thank you for your support.
Enjoy the game.
consequently we want to be part of
“We’re delighted to have our logo
Stephen said: “We’ve had a
relationship with the Stags for a long
time now, and when the opportunity
came around to sponsor the rear of
the home shirt for this season, we
quickly agreed. It’s a pleasure to have
this sponsorship.
“We’re a local business; myself and
Andrew grew up in Mansfield. With
people seeing our name on the back
of the shirt, it’s going to be great for
the company.”
HAWKINS MAKES
EFL & SKY BET
LEAGUE TWO
TEAM OF THE
WEEK
It was a debut to remember for
striker Oliver Hawkins, who earned
himself a place in the season’s
first EFL and Sky Bet League Two
Team of the Weeks, following his
performance against Bristol Rovers.
The Sky Bet League Two Team of the
Week selects the standout players
across the division following the
weekend’s round of fixtures, whereas
the EFL Team of the Week showcases
the best performers from the Sky Bet
Championship, Sky Bet League One
and Sky Bet League Two as a whole.
Hawkins, 29, had a big impact on last
week’s season opener against Bristol
Rovers, opening the scoring in the
first-half.
Not only this, but the striker won the
stoppage time penalty which was
converted by fellow frontman Danny
Johnson to secure victory for the
Stags.
The attacker played a key role in both
boxes, winning 18 aerial duels and
making two clearances throughout
an all-action debut.
Well played, Oli!
will read a permit from a printout or
NEW NORTH
STAND SPONSORS
REVEALED
RM Refrigeration & Air Conditioning
Ltd are the new North Stand
sponsors at One Call Stadium for
the 2021/22 season, we are pleased
to announce.
The Mansfield-based business,
which is a family-run air conditioning
equipment and servicing company,
was randomly drawn as North Stand
sponsors as part of the recent 200
Club draw in the club’s 1861 Suite.
The 200 Club gives businesses or
individuals the chance to sponsor the
North Stand for the entire season.
Therefore, the North Stand will
be known as the RM Refrigeration
and Air Conditioning Stand for the
duration of the 2021/22 campaign.
Commercial manager Paul Nyland
said: “First of all, I would like to say
congratulations to RM Refrigeration
& Air Conditioning for winning
sponsorship of the North Stand for
the coming season.
“We are so pleased with the
commercial commitments and show
of support from local companies for
this year’s 200 Club.
“I have been overwhelmed with the
number of businesses that have
entered this year’s draw considering
the difficulties we have all faced over
the last 18 months.
“The 200 Club has once again
proven to be another example of
local companies coming together to
support Mansfield Town.”
Under-18s’ midfielder Curtis Davies
tells the story of last week’s 1-1 draw
away at Grimsby Town, in which he
scored a late equaliser to rescue a
point.
Early into the game, we learned
that the Grimsby striker was
very fast, with a counter-attack
seeing them go into an early lead.
I thought that he was their best
player on the day.
Our defending wasn’t so great in the
first-half and we didn’t deal with him
too well.
But, I thought we were okay in
midfield and we played through the
thirds well in parts. Considering it was
the first game of the season, we all
linked up really well at times.
We created a lot of half-chances in
the first-half, but not many clear cut
opportunities. Next time out, I’d say
we need to be more aggressive in our
attacking play.
THE
ACADEMY
MIDFIELDER LIFTS LID
AFTER LATE LEVELLER
At half-time, going into the break
a goal down, the coaches were
frustrated with our defending and
made some tactical adjustments in
midfield to try and get us back into
the game.
There was certainly an improvement
in the second-half, and we handled
the lad up front for Grimsby a lot
better.
We were more composed at the back,
and because of that, we saw a lot of
the ball in the second-half.
We kept the ball better, moved it side
to side and created far more chances
in front of goal. However, we didn’t
create too many major opportunities.
Eventually, we managed to find that
goal at the end of the game.
It wasn’t a very good goal, but it’s a
goal at the end of the day. The ball
went out to McKeal Abdullah on
the left, he took it to the byline and
whipped in a really good cross.
Diego Edwards was in the middle,
and I ran 30 or 40 yards to gamble on
there being a chance. It came to me,
and when I got a little touch on it,
the goalkeeper tried to clear it but it
ended up in the net.
It felt really good to get that goal,
but I was still a little frustrated, as
I thought we should’ve won the
game. I think we were the better
side on the day and we’ll probably
look back later in the season and be
disappointed that we didn’t get the
three points.
We’ll be working on creating clear cut
chances and our defending ahead of
our next match, against Scunthorpe
United at home.
CONSIGNS HIS PET HATES
INTO ROOM 101…
ENTERTAINMENT: Staged television, mostly from
reality tv shows. The producers edit it skilfully,
picking the ‘best’ bits for the TV. It’s sometimes
not a fair reflection. The people who go into these
reality shows often go in it for money and fame, but
I don’t think they really know what they’re really
getting themselves into, especially after they’ve left
and all that comes with it.
MODERN LIFE: Everybody is trying to be better than
everybody else. Social media has a big part to play in
this. A lot of people show a fake life on social media,
especially famous people. It does have some benefits
of course; I am on Twitter and my Instagram is private,
but I like to use it to look at football transfer rumours
and things like that.
WILDCARD: I hate politics. I hate the people in charge of
this country. They all have their own separate agenda.
I’d throw them all into Room 101 and put an ordinary
man in charge!
SPORT: I don’t like cricket. I don’t get it, I really
don’t. I couldn’t sit and watch it. It’s the only
sport I wouldn’t watch.
FOOD & DRINK: I don’t like it when you go to a
restaurant and you pay a lot of money and there’s
hardly anything on the plate. I don’t get why they
charge so much for a mouthful.
Giving Football Back to
Small Business
At eBay, we know small business and
football clubs used to be like chips and
gravy, two peas in a pod – a match
made in community heaven.
Ironmongers, ship workers, spring
makers and cobblers, all formed clubs
which decades later are still prospering.
But nowadays, you’d think it was all
eyewatering transfers, Super Leagues
and mega sponsors, detached from the
humble origins of our historic clubs.
That’s why eBay are proud to support
300,000 small businesses who help
power EFL clubs nationwide. We’ll be
donating our advertising space to a lot
of these businesses – on match day
hoardings, around grounds and beyond –
throughout the coming season, to ensure
they can continue to thrive in our local
communities. So, join us in giving your
support to Small Business Power, because
today, they need us more than ever.
LOCAL DERBY TO KICK
OFF CAMPAIGN
Ladies’ manager Andi Bell says
that, as well as three points,
‘pride’ will be at stake in the
opening fixture of the season
against local rivals Chesterfield.
After two null and void seasons,
Mansfield Town Ladies will begin the
new campaign away to the Spireites
in early September.
Andi Bell says that there will be an
‘added bit of spice’ to the fixture, due
to the fierce rivalry between the
two clubs.
“Chesterfield are one of the
teams that have come up,”
she told The Stag. “We’ve
played them in friendlies
a few times and they’ve
always given us a good
game.
“They’re a really strong
team, but we want to
hit the ground running.
There is a lot of pride
at stake within that
particular fixture.
“We have a few
Mansfield fans playing
for us and I’m sure they
have Chesterfield fans
who play for them.
“It’s a local derby, so there will be an
added bit of spice to the game.
“It’s the first game of the season, so
everyone will already be raring to go
anyway. It should be a good game
between two good sides.”
Looking ahead to the upcoming new
season, Andi Bell says Mansfield
Town Ladies must aim for ‘the top
end of the table,’ due to the excellent
facilities on offer at the club.
“We’ve got a good core of players
from last season and a few additions.
I think it will be an exciting season
because of the squad we’ve put
together.
THERE IS A
“ LOT OF PRIDE AT
STAKE WITHIN
THAT PARTICULAR
FIXTURE.
”
“The league will be tougher
than it was last time around, as
there has been another couple
of good clubs promoted.
“We’ll prepare ourselves
properly, and I hope
we’ll be there or
thereabouts come the
end of the season.
“With the backing we’ve
got from the club and the
support we have, along
with the facilities we have
access to, finishing at the
top end of the table has to
be the aim.
“It’s a tough ask with only one
side going up, as there are
a lot of quality teams in our
league.”
COACHING AND DEVELOPMENT COURSE RECRUITING STUDENTS
Mansfield Town Football in the
Community has just finished
another year of its BTEC Level
Three Diploma/Extended
Diploma in Sports Coaching and
Development, and is now seeking a
new batch of students to take part
in the programme. Training daily
with a UEFA B qualified coach and
studying in an Ofsted ‘Good’ rated
education facility, students will be
overseen daily by expert staff.
Year 12 students pose for a photo during their media day with education officer Ben
Cocker (left) and post-16 education lead coach Mark Lynk (right).
The BTEC Level Three Diploma/
Extended Diploma in Sports Coaching
and Development will encourage
students to fulfil their potential and
discover more about the possibilities
of a prolonged career in sport, with
a coursework-based approach to
learning. Learning is all based at One
Call Stadium.
Ben Cocker, education officer at
Football in the Community, said:
“We’re really excited about the
new academic year and supporting
students’ development. Students get
lots of support during their time with
us at the club and are encouraged
to develop and build key skills both
inside and outside of the classroom.
“Our Year 12 students from 2020/21
have been an absolutely brilliant
group and I’m extremely excited
to see their progress following
their second year on the BTEC
programme.”
Students will be provided with a
number of opportunities to discover
various career options throughout
the two-year course, including the
chance to work with Mansfield
Town Football in the Community’s
experienced coaching team, gaining
valuable first-hand experience.
As part of the post-16 education
pathway, enrolled students will have
the opportunity to compete in weekly
11-a-side matches in the EFL/EFL
Trust CEFA League. The Community
Education Football Alliance (CEFA)
League is regionalised with students
playing in weekly matches against
other Football League Trust sides,
as well as competing in national
tournaments.
Ben Cocker added: “Not only do
students get the opportunity to build
their knowledge and understanding
of different topics within sport, but
they also get to represent our great
club in competitive games against
opponents such as Derby County,
Aston Villa, Nottingham Forest and
Wolverhampton Wanderers.
“It’s a great opportunity for our
students to not only progress within
their academic journey, but also to
work on their practical skills as well,
as part of our CEFA team who consist
of both male and female players with
ranging levels of ability.”
The two-year BTEC course is open to
ages 16-19 and to all genders, and
does not require candidates to have
any sport ability or experience. This is
not an elite footballing development
programme. Students who wish
to enrol on the programme must
provide evidence of a minimum of
four GCSE qualifications, graded 9-4,
or a BTEC Level Two in Sport or an
equivalent. English and Maths are
not an essential qualification to be
passed, as Football in the Community
can provide extra tuition for anyone
who may require a retake.
THE GOLDEN ARCHIVE
‘HIS STORY’
PROJECTING A PARADE OF GLORIOUS DAYS FROM
THE WORLD’S OLDEST PROFESSIONAL GROUND
From the sublime to the ridiculous
and everything in between, we look
back with a Stags’ hero of the past,
focusing on memorable behindthe-scenes
moments they will never
forget.
Featuring this week with ‘His-Story’, is
former striker Matt Green, who played
for the club between 2011 – 2013, and
then again from 2015 – 2017, scoring
a total of 70 goals for the club.
Gary Roberts was a character!
There are a few stories I could
tell you that involve Robbo, but it’s
a family club so I will bear that in
mind!
There was one occasion I can tell
you about. One particular week,
after training, some of the lads had
managed to run ahead and get into
the changing room before anybody
else. Once there, they proceeded
to get all of Robbo’s clothes and
smother deep heat inside them all –
socks, trousers, underpants, the lot!
After he’d showered, all the lads
watched in amusement as he got
dressed, and he slowly turned more
and more red, as the heat took hold
from each item of clothing he put on.
He turned a beetroot colour and then
his eyes started streaming – which
he wiped, but because he’d handled
his clothes with deep heat on, he
then got it all in his eyes! All the lads
thought this was hilarious!
The following day we had an away
fixture at Kidderminster, and on the
coach travelling there you could still
smell deep heat on Robbo. Anyway,
he played a blinder – setting me up
for the winner, and he got the man of
the match! We told him we ought to
cover him in deep heat every week
but, funnily enough, he wasn’t so
keen!
There were so many memorable
times at the club! One occasion we
all particularly enjoyed was when
we went to Tenerife, which the
chairman had paid for, to celebrate
our promotion back to the Football
League.
I’d fallen asleep at the side of the
pool, with my phone in my pocket.
John Dempster and Lee Beevers
thought it would be funny to wake
me up – which they did by picking me
up, still on the sun lounger, throwing
me into the pool! All the boys loved
that and found it hilarious seeing
me launched into the pool! I found it
funny too, until I realised I’d still got
my phone in my pocket!
Another amusing story is one time
when Chappy (Adam Chapman)
realised he had forgotten his shin
pads before a big match against Notts
County. So, just before the match was
due to start, he ran into the Sandy
Pate Bar, grabbed a load of beer mats
and wrapped them all around his
ankles and shins, making a pair of
self-made shin pads!
He went on to play really
well, scoring a worldy of
a free-kick, and we won
about 5-0!
