~ HANDMADE FOR CHRISTMAS? ~
Is it a gallery? Is it a gift shop? Is it a craft fair?
No! Handmade for Christmas is so much more….
Handmade for Christmas is a 10-week extravaganza of loveliness, bringing
together original work by dozens of incredibly talented makers and artists from
Dorset and neighbouring counties. We do our very best to bring you a diverse
and exceptional range of fairly priced, properly hand-crafted, completely unique
gifts.
As Autumn grips the land this unassuming little Victorian Chapel transforms into
a glowing beacon of hope for all those who dread the annual Christmas shopping
trip, a cornucopia of wonders, literally piled to the rafters with perfect gifts for
everyone on your list - even Auntie Maud! (and don’t forget a little something for
yourself as well).
On top of all this (as if it wasn’t enough) we think we give the warmest welcome
in the West. Just ask anyone who’s visited us and they’ll tell you what a truly
splendid experience it is.
Handmade for Christmas is The Workhouse Chapel’s big annual
event. If you would like to know what goes on in the WC - yes!
I know

~ Welcome to the TENTH HANDMADE FOR CHRISTMAS! ~
TEN!!!!!! Really???? How did that happen? We’ve made it to double figures!

~ Allow me to introduce THE TEAM ~
Hello! Hello! I’m Rose - the one with the glasses - and
Handmade for Christmas is my baby. I like to pretend I’m in
charge - please don’t disillusion me…
Then there’s Bob, (aka The Accidental Starman) - his job is lighting
the fire, fettling the log pile, lifting heavy stuff, fetching and
carrying, occasionally he makes the tea - a vital part of the team,
but not ideally suited to front-of-house duties, so you’ll be lucky
to catch a glimpse ;-).
Kate is my trusty second-in-command - she works super-hard to
retrieve and maintain the control and balance that I have
mislaid. When Kate isn’t on duty, she spends her time rescuing
old greenhouses and turning them into things of great wonder
and beauty.
The three of us make up the
all-year team, but even though we’re
blooming wonderful, we couldn’t manage
Handmade for Christmas without help from the
Fabulously, Wonderfully, Incredibly Helpful
Elves. They’ll be oh-so-happy to help with your
shopping and generally be cheerily welcoming
and useful.
~ And now… PREPARE TO MEET YOUR MAKERS! ~
First things first! Let’s give a huge Handmade welcome to our twenty new
exhibitors! And offer our heartfelt thanks to the eight originals who have stuck
by us as we’ve grown. Keep an eye open for the Workshop symbol - you
could learn something exciting and new (not to mention life-enhancing and
truly wondrous). All our exhibitors are carefully chosen, based on quality of
craftsmanship, originality, and especially how much we think you will love their
work. This motley crew of creative folk are some of the most wonderful people I
know. Clever, inventive, funny, weird, wonderful, kind, moral, proud, humble, hardworking,
imaginative, crazy…
So let’s not hang around - you really need to get to know them a bit better…
~ AYEWTKAWATA ~
(All you ever wanted to know and were afraid to ask)
Ah... OK!!!

~ THE 2021 EXHIBITOR QUESTIONNAIRE ~
got a bit deep and meaningful this year
Lockdown made me realise just how vital making by hand is to me. It is what I do, who I am and at
the very core of my existence. It’s my support system and so much more than a way of making a
living - an instinct - a habit - a default setting. I was interested to know what it meant to my fellow
Handmade exhibitors…. So one of the questions I asked was this….
What does MAKING BY HAND mean to you?
“Everything”
“Total escape”
“What I make is me”
“Living in tune with myself”
“I can’t imagine life without making”
“It nourishes my heart, mind and soul”
“A day without making something feels like a wasted day”
“It settles me, and when it’s going well, raises my heart rate”
“It’s like a secondary language - I speak through what I create”
“at the root of all I do - an integral part of who and what I am”
“The sheer joy of making a 3D version of an image in my head will never grow old”
“When it brings happiness and joy to someone it is beyond amazing”
“What I get from it feeds me more deeply than the money I earn.”
“If I didn’t make to sell, I’d make cakes and be too fat to move ;)”
“It shows a part of us that we don’t always see ourselves”
“Using clay, I feel spiritually connected to the earth.”
“Survival - without it I would be nothing”
“It’s the strongest part of who I am”
“Making by hand is my life”
“It makes my heart sing”
22
Whoah!! That’s a bit heavy!
BUT every single one of those words is true for me too (especially the cake bit).
I suspect each of us can relate to everyone else’s version in some way.
ONLINE SHOPPING
Last year (in a bold and socially distanced attempt to ‘continue to
trade’) we set up the Workhouse Chapel Online Shop. It doesn’t
have quite the volume of stock as the real life Handmade for
Christmas, but if we haven’t got what you were after, just give us a
call and we will do our level best to find the perfect thing.
We love to imagine you lounging by the fire, cup o’ tea (or something
altogether more exotic) by your side, slippers on, maybe a cat on
your lap - maybe the cat is helping to navigate the way around
our splendid virtual emporium - a veritable department store of
handmade goodness - Open all year!
BARGAIN BALCONY
If you’ve been to us before, you’ll know all about the Bargain Balcony. And before
you ask, Yes, we do have a basement, but it’s tiny, damp and cold - you really,
really wouldn’t want it to be a Bargain Basement… The BB is where we all put the
things we have seen enough of - old stock, prototypes that never went anywhere,
things that fall everso slightly short of perfect, things that didn’t go
entirely to plan. All way, way too good to throw away and all at
serious bargain prices. Check it out! Grab a bargain!
~ OUR MISSION STATEMENT ~
At the Workhouse Chapel we set our standards high - sometimes it’s not easy to
keep to our own rules - sometimes we don’t know we’ve broken them - but we are
trying. Yes, yes, go on, say it….. it’s not like we haven’t heard it before ;-)
Making by hand is at the of who we are and what we do (sorry, have we mentioned
this before?) - we will defend our right to Make by Hand to the bitter end.
All items we sell (apart from some printed greetings cards) are properly made by hand
by fabulously skilled and hugely inventive craftspeople.
We make with love, passion and commitment. Most of us work with natural, local
and/or recycled materials. This isn’t about preaching that our way is right, or best,
but about sharing with you how massively important it is to us to treat our world
kindly and to keep our impact as small as possible. It is an enormous privilege
every time someone makes a deliberate choice to buy something we have made.
We would love to gently raise awareness about environmental issues through the
work we make, the materials we use and the processes we employ.
Our packaging is recycled or recyclable, and preferably both. If we use plastic
bubblewrap, you can be sure it’s been used before, or else it’s biodegradable and
was bought years ago. We love it best when people bring their own bags…. We
are very happy for you to bring back the packaging we gave you, so we can use it
again - and again - and again…
Lots of cake. Oh sorry - did I write that out loud?
We want to make and find gorgeous goodies for you, our most important customer…
We want to thrill you with the downright wonderfulness of what this bunch of
lovely folk can dream up….
We want you to feel welcomed, comfortable and right at home in the Workhouse Chapel.
