Ashville Holdings is rooted in construction and our history has morphed
from boots on the ground company found itself to with in-house very few basements to development and government
dig. So, Louisy went looking for work elsewhere.
infrastructure projects. I used to drive
“I knew Ashville who my building competitors Holdings were, as I encompasses every element in
would see their names on tenders,” he says. “So I the lorry, and
construction and went to them is all a and fundamental said ‘I can’t beat the others on part of all supply pump too.” chains.
price, but I’ll be there when I say I’ll be there’.” This
approach worked, and one tipper-grab very soon
became three tipper-grabs and a tipper.
“Then Wandsworth banned grabs from taking
out of skips, and I began to lose work,” remembers
Louisy. “So we started buying skip lorries too.”
This was quickly followed by another change
in direction. “We would arrive at a job only to be
told we couldn’t load as a concrete lorry was there,
and that the concrete lorry was more important.
So we bought a volumetric concrete lorry! So then
we had a concrete lorry, grabs, tippers and skips,”
says Louisy. “But then when we turned up with the
concrete lorry, people were telling us that the pump
wasn’t there, so we’d have to wait. So we bought a
A pair of 4x2 grabs were soon added to the
fast-expanding and increasingly varied fleet,
allowing Ashville to operate in some of the mews
and narrow streets of Chelsea. And more recently
the company made the move into artic tippers,
with the purchase of a pair of Scania XT R500 6x2
tractors with Kelberg tipping trailers.
But there was still one serious hurdle to overcome,
as Louisy explains: “If we priced a job, and two
HOOPS
The Gaffer
FIRSTLY, MAY I EXTEND A WARM WELCOME TO
MARKUS SCHOPP, HIS STAFF, PLAYERS, AND ALL
ASSOCIATED WITH BARNSLEY FOOTBALL CLUB.
A
fter a tremendous season
where they reached the playoff
places, Barnsley have
continued to move forward with
Markus taking over and their astute
recruitment seeing good additions
made to an already strong squad.
They’ve started this season with
a positive away draw and a good
home victory and there’s no doubt
that they’ll provide a very strong test
here today. It’s fair to say that we’ve
not emerged with credit from our
recent encounters, both home and
away, and therefore we’re looking
forward to meeting the challenge
and hopefully delivering a strong and
successful performance.
These notes are being written prior
to our visit to Middlesbrough, so I’m
therefore unable to comment on
what I hope very much proved to be a
good journey to the North East.
However, I’m able to discuss the
trip to Hull City, where the players
delivered a strong display to
secure all three points. In a typical
Championship fixture, we had long
periods of dominance, interspersed
with moments of excellent defending
and goalline clearances! A positive
start soon resulted in a good opening
goal, and it gave us that breathing
space that comes from knowing the
opposition have to ‘open up’ and seek
an equaliser.
Such is the nature and quality of the
Championship, Hull had a very strong
period just after half-time and the
players, to a man, were called upon to
win headers, block shots and defend
our goal with total commitment. They
did this outstandingly well and whilst
the goalscorers will always take credit,
the sight of every QPR player working
so hard to protect the clean sheet will
have given everyone a real boost.
We weathered this storm and soon
scored two second-half goals that I
hope will have delighted the almost
1,000 R’s fans that made the long
trek north. Again, the sight of the
players celebrating in front of such
tremendous away support has
a hugely beneficial impact and
heightens the belief within the squad.
This league, as has been stated so
many times, is relentlessly demanding
and will challenge each and every
player in so many ways. To have any
chance of success, a team must have
that mental strength and absolute
elief, both individually and collectively.
Results and performances such as that
at Hull go a long way to building the
resilience that is absolutely required at
this level.
There’s much to talk about with the squad
and staff, and I’ll use my future programme
notes to highlight aspects of the first team
that perhaps go unnoticed. However, I
want to first discuss my choice of captain
and vice-captain for this season.
We have four outstanding senior
professionals who play a hugely important
role in mentoring the younger players
both on and off the pitch.
Charlie Austin and Albert Adomah are, of
course, so closely affiliated with the club
and I’m sure each and every supporter
recognises what QPR means to both of
them. Their input, the standards they set
and the experience they possess will be so
beneficial throughout this coming season.
In Stefan Johansen and Lee Wallace, we
have another two senior players with a
wealth of experience both playing-wise
and captaincy-wise. With Stef having
captained his country and Lee having
skippered Glasgow Rangers, we have two
excellent leaders who can help the squad
deal with the type of challenges that
will invariably arise. I’ve named Stefan as
captain and Lee as vice-captain and I look
forward to watching their positive impact
in the weeks and months ahead.
Finally, I want to make mention of the
level of support that has been given to
the team in the first two league games.
At home to Millwall and away at Hull, we
enjoyed fantastic backing and great noise.
There’s no doubt that the players receive
an enormous boost from having that
behind them. To travel such distance, incur
such expense and back the team in such
a fantastic way is greatly appreciated and,
as I always say, is never taken for granted.
Sincere thanks to each and every R’s fan!
Enjoy the game!
NEW DEAL FOR BOSS
MARK Warburton has agreed a new deal with QPR.
The 58-year-old ex-Brentford, Rangers and
Nottingham Forest boss was named R’s manager
in May 2019, guiding the Hoops to 13th in his first
season and a ninth-place finish last term.
QPR chief executive Lee Hoos said: “Over the past
two years Mark has worked tirelessly to move the
club into a far stronger position on and off the pitch.
“The manager deserves enormous credit for the
part he’s played in building the squad.”
JOHANSEN NAMED SKIPPER
STEFAN Johansen has been named QPR’s new
club captain.
The 30-year-old former Norway skipper completed
a permanent return to W12 from Fulham in the
summer following a successful loan stint last term.
“This is a special honour for me,” said Johansen.
Lee Wallace - who signed a new one-year deal this
summer - will be vice-captain.
HAMALAINEN’S LOAN SWITCH
QPR defender Niko Hamalainen has joined LA Galaxy
on loan until 31st December.
The tie will be contested on Tuesday 24th August.
Rangers defeated Leyton Orient on penalties to
book their place in the second round, while Oxford
also triumphed on spot-kicks at Burton Albion.
HOOPS
Stefan - it was a bit of a smashand-grab
win at Hull on Saturday,
but sometimes they’re the best ones,
aren’t they?
It’s always good to get the first three
points on the board. In this league, every
game is tough. To win in the style we did
was great. Now we need to try and build
on that.
It was nice to see a couple of set-plays
come off in that game. It must be so
satisfying when they work like that?
Yes, of course. It’s something we spend
a lot of time on. In this league, set-plays
are vital. In a tight game, one set-play
can change the match. It’s great when
what you do on the training ground
comes off.
The celebrations in front of the
travelling fans are what football’s all
about. It’s something everyone has
missed, haven’t they?
To have the fans back in the stadiums
has made a massive difference. As the
saying goes, football is nothing without
the fans but it’s absolutely true. The
vibe of the whole game changed when
supporters weren’t allowed in stadiums.
Now they’re back it’s absolutely fantastic
and it definitely gives the players more
energy. QPR fans are known for being
loud and it’s been great to hear them in
full voice.
You were made QPR skipper at the start
of the season - how much of an honour
was that?
To be club captain is a big thing, but
we have a lot of leaders in the dressing
room. I may have the armband, but
we’ve got other experienced players
like Lee [Wallace], Chaz [Charlie Austin]
and Uncs [Albert Adomah]. Some of the
younger players are also taking more
responsibility so there are loads of
leaders in this team.
14 WWW.QPR.CO.UK // @QPR // @OFFICIALQPR // OFFICIALQPRFC

HOOPS
It’s great when what
you do on the training
ground comes off
Why do you think the manager sees you
as captain material?
I just try to do what I’ve always done. I’ve
been in the game for quite a long time
and managed to get a lot of experience.
I’ve played in different leagues and been
successful at different clubs. I won titles
with Celtic and in Norway, promotions
with Fulham, I’ve captained my national
team. I know what it takes to win games
and lead by example. But it’s an easy job
for me now when you have this squad of
players. Everyone helps out. Some of the
squad have been here for a few years and
know the club better than I do, but it’s
easy to be captain in a group like this.
Why did you decide to come back to
QPR on a permanent basis? Could you
have stayed at Fulham? Did you have
talks with their new boss Marco Silva?
I had some talks with him, but I just felt
QPR was a good match for me. I had
one year left on my contract at Fulham,
I’d been there for five amazing seasons,
and I just felt it was time for me to move
on. I came on loan to QPR in January and
loved every single minute. It was a good
move for me and my family and the club
wanted me. It was a no-brainer to come
back when I was offered the chance.
You know all about getting out of the
Championship with two promotions to
your name. What’s the secret?
It’s about the mindset of how we go into
games because the quality is definitely
in the squad. We have experience and
some talented younger players. The club
had a very good transfer window and
also didn’t sell any key players. Everyone
Giving Football Back to
Small Business
At eBay, we know small business and
football clubs used to be like chips and
gravy, two peas in a pod – a match
made in community heaven.
Ironmongers, ship workers, spring
makers and cobblers, all formed clubs
which decades later are still prospering.
But nowadays, you’d think it was all
eyewatering transfers, Super Leagues
and mega sponsors, detached from the
humble origins of our historic clubs.
That’s why eBay are proud to support
300,000 small businesses who help
power EFL clubs nationwide. We’ll be
donating our advertising space to a lot
of these businesses – on match day
QPR fans are known
knows how tough the Championship is.
You can beat the top teams one day and
then struggle against the bottom teams
another day. We need to be consistent,
and I think we’re slowly starting to
understand what it takes to win games in
this league.
What do you feel QPR can realistically
achieve this season?
We need to build on what we did last
season. Most of the squad were here
last term. We had a good second half
of the season, but we know how hard
this league is. The expectation is big
because of what we did last season, but
you have to understand what it takes to
win games. It’s a boring thing to say but
WWW.QPR.CO.UK // @QPR // @OFFICIALQPR // OFFICIALQPRFC 17

HOOPS
I may have the
armband, but we have
a lot of leaders in the
dressing room
we need to take every single game as it
comes. We can’t get too carried away
and start thinking about May. There are
jobs to do every single month. We’re
trying to do better than last season and I
think we have the squad to do that.
It’s a tough game today. Barnsley were
in the play-offs last season…
Barnsley are a good team. I played
against them a few times when I was
at Fulham. They know what they’re
doing and do it really well. We’ll need to
be ready for the task. It’s been a tough
schedule for us in the opening weeks
of the season but that’s no excuse and
that’s where recovery is important. We’re
expecting a tough game, but we know
what we need to do and hopefully we can
take the three points.
Barnsley captain Cauley Woodrow is
someone you played with at Fulham.
QPR will need to be wary of him today,
won’t we?
I played with him for a short period
of time before he got his move to
Barnsley. He’s done brilliantly there.
He always has a goal in him so it’s up
to us to stop him. But they’ve got lots
of good players. We’re aware of their
Columnist
THE FOUNDING EDITOR OF QPR FANSITE ‘R’ GENERATION
DISCUSSES THE LATEST GOINGS ON IN W12…
efore I say anything about any football
B
team of any sort, I just want to talk
about a man named Robert.
Robert Dickie has been rather good so far, has
he not? He was highly rated at Oxford and has
emerged as our standout player of 2021/22. It’s
been a fantastic few weeks to open the season
and Rob has been at the heart of it. Not only is
he our top scorer and highest-ranked player, but
he is genuinely improving with every touch.
Rob embodies a trait I believe to be at the heart
of every successful Championship campaign;
composure. This division is 46 matches long and
no game is a walk in the park (apart from Luton
who pretty much play in a literal park). Players
who can seize the occasion, but not all at once,
are the ones who can truly progress from this
ridiculous but extraordinary league.
Because the potential prize is so special, the
passion can really build up, resulting in mistimed
tackles, misplaced passes and misbehaving
centre-halves. But, to make it through a
Championship season, as Mark Warburton says
each week, we must take every game one at a
time and only focus on the direct task at hand.
That’s why we’re so fortunate to have a man like
Rob to demonstrate that level of composure
across the team.
Credit, however, must be shared between pretty
much every player who’s worn a Rangers shirt
so far this season, because man for man, we’ve
been completely outstanding!
Add to this just how wonderful it was to be back
amongst the fans again. We’ve all had a pretty flat
past year emotionally, so to sit amongst a packed
stand of blue and white shirts all singing the same
song was a truly emotional experience. I genuinely
shed a tear re-entering the KPFS after so long. It
was like Christmas, but instead of presents, I got a
load of bald men singing about a Norwegian bloke
for 90 minutes. Home sweet home.
It’s truly special to be a part of our fanbase. It’s
easy to bicker and fight when everyone is so
passionate about one thing, but this season
there’s a remarkable togetherness. Albert
Adomah crowd surfing after a penalty shoot-out
victory in the League Cup at Leyton Orient is a
pretty perfect representation of just how much
it means to be back at the football!
We remain unbeaten, as of writing (pre-Boro), and
face a difficult clash with last year’s bogey side
Barnsley today. It will be a proper test , but with
Rob at the back, and an in-form R’s side, I have
no doubt we will, once again, put out a display to
remember! COYRS!
OPPOSITION
OVERVIEW
O P P O S I T I O N O V E R V I E W
Despite a brief stint in the Premier League in 1997/98, in
recent years Barnsley have found mid-table Championship
finishes an accomplishment worth celebrating.
However, the arrival of new owners in 2017 has set new targets
for the Reds and a fifth-place finish last season has seen
expectations at Oakwell rise.
The departure of popular manager Valerien Ismael in the
summer left a big void, but hopes are high that his replacement
- relatively unknown Austrian Markus Schopp - can help the
Tykes return to the promised land of the top flight.
Under Schopp, Barnsley drew on the opening day at Cardiff City
before a home victory over Coventry City last weekend.
Barnsley were busy in the summer transfer market and the
arrival of frontmen Devante Cole, Aaron Leya Iseka and Obbi
Oulare will add firepower to the Tykes’ squad.
Nationality: Austrian
Year Appointed: 2021
FOLLOWING the
departure of Frenchman
Valerien Ismael, Markus
Schopp has big shoes to
fill as he looks to
improve on last year’s
fifth-place finish.
The former Austria
international midfielder
called time on his
playing days in 2007
following a loan spell in
the MLS with New York
Red Bulls. He then began
his coaching career in
the youth set-up at Red
Bull Salzburg back in
his homeland.
This paved the way for
a return to Sturm Graz,
a place where he
enjoyed eight years as a
player during two
separate spells. Schopp
spent five years in
charge of Graz’s second
XI and also had a stint as
caretaker manager of
the first team.
It was at TSV Hartberg
where Schopp would
eventually get his big
break. A fine 2019/20
campaign saw the
Austrians reach the
Europa League for the
first time in their history,
before a seventh-place
finish the following year
only enhanced his
growing status.
This caught the eye of
Barnsley who have
carved out a reputation
for appointing exciting
young managers.
A product of
Chelsea’s youth
system, goalkeeper
Bradley Collins
moved to Barnsley
in June 2019
following the expiry
of his contract at
Stamford Bridge.
Despite failing to
feature for the Blues,
impressive loan spells
at Forest Green
Rovers and Burton
Albion set Collins on
his way in the
professional game.
Following his
switch to South
Yorkshire in 2019,
Collins has gone on
to make the number
has started both
league games under
new boss Markus
Schopp this term.
LONDONER Toby Sibbick
joined Barnsley from AFC
Wimbledon in the summer
of 2019.
Sibbick was soon featuring
regularly for the Reds but was
allowed to head to Hearts on
loan in January 2020. His spell
north of the border was
disrupted by glandular fever and
the early conclusion of the
Scottish season which ended in
relegation for Hearts.
He spent the first half of last
term on loan with Belgium club
Oostende, returning to Barnsley
in January and playing a crucial
role in their run to the play-offs.
Sibbick bagged his first
YOUNG midfielder Callum
2018 from hometown club Bury
for a fee of £500,000,
immediately returning to the
Shakers in a six-month
loan deal.
The diminutive Styles slowly
began to make a name for
himself back at Oakwell, scoring
his first goal for the Tykes in a
2-1 win at Brentford on the final
day of the 2019/20 season.
Styles, who was handed his
professional debut for Bury at
the tender age of 16, was a key
figure for Barnsley last term,
making 50 appearances in
all competitions.
ahead of the 2020/21
helped LASK reach
the last 16 of the
Europa League.
The winger was
mainly utilised from
the bench last term,
scoring three goals.
He did start the
play-off final against
Swansea City but was
then withdrawn at
half-time.
The arrival of
countryman Markus
Schopp as manager
could pay dividends
and a winning strike
last weekend against
ensure that Frieser is
numerous strikes
against QPR
continually reminding
us of the quality that
the former England
possesses.
Having begun his
career with Luton
Town, Woodrow was
snapped up by
Fulham’s academy,
progressing through
the ranks to make his
Premier League bow in
2014 against Cardiff
City after being recalled
from a loan spell at
Southend United. He
scored his first
professional goal for
the Whites a few
weeks later.
Loan stints with Burton
Albion, Bristol City and
Barnsley followed, with
his move to the Tykes
eventually being made
permanent in
January 2019.
Woodrow would go on to
form a fine partnership
with Conor Chaplin,
with the two terrorising
the Rangers defence in
December 2019.
The departure of Alex
Mowatt in the summer
saw Woodrow, who
scored 15 goals last
term, handed the
captain’s armband.
Having burst onto the scene in 1994, Gallen quickly formed
R
EFLECTING on the 1981/82 FA
Cup semi-final, it was QPR of
Division Two against top-flight West
Bromwich Albion at Highbury. All the
build-up was about Albion’s in-form
striker Cyrille Regis. He was fresh
from winning a first England cap and
had scored his 20th goal of the
season in West Brom’s 2-0 victory
over Coventry City in the quarterfinal.
The pundits said he was
unstoppable, didn’t they?
They said all that, but we were
confident in the Rangers camp and our
boss Terry Venables was particularly
bullish. Yes, it was all about Regis in the
build-up, but Terry said, ‘If you stop
Regis, you stop West Brom. It’s as
simple as that.’ I used to share a room
on away trips with our centre-half Bob
Hazell, so I knew what was going
through his head before the semi-final.
He was big mates with Cyrille. In fact,
Bob said, ‘Cyrille’s not a problem for
me.’ I replied, ‘That’s great Bob, keep
him away from me as much as you
can!’ Bob was a very chilled person
anyway and had no qualms about
marking Cyrille whatsoever. And it
showed in that match where Bob was
outstanding. In fact, as a keeper I was
bored for most of the game! It was
quite an even match, but chance-wise I
think I only made one save, maybe two.
And they weren’t anything more than
run-of-the-mill saves.
We won that game 1-0. It was a
tremendous performance by
Rangers, wasn’t it?
Most definitely. But being part of an
FA Cup semi-final in those days was a
fantastic experience. We were doing
okay in the league and Terry didn’t
really change the way we played as we
lined up against West Brom. He
wanted to create problems for them
and said, ‘Let them concentrate on
HOOPS
I was bored for most
of the semi-final!
us.’ For me, it was such an obvious thing
to try to do. He didn’t say, ‘We’ve got to
stop him getting the ball. We’ve got to
stop them from doing this and that.’ If
you cause the other team problems,
their game goes out the window and
they end up worrying about you. Their
left-back who normally gets forward to
cross all the balls suddenly doesn’t want
to get forward because your right winger
is constantly giving him a problem. That
was Terry’s philosophy. In fact, our whole
team contained West Brom so well and
caused them problems. Beforehand,
Albion thought they would have it all
wrapped up by half-time, but it was 0-0
at the break and they knew they were in a
game when they came out for the
second 45. And I think that’s what turned
things in our favour.
Clive Allen scored the only goal in
the 72nd minute when he blocked a
clearance by West Brom defender
Ally Robertson and the ball cannoned
into the net. It was a scruffy but
glorious moment, wasn’t it?
To be fair, the goal was more panic in
their defence rather than great play
by us. Bob Hazell was involved in that
attack. We’d contained West Brom so
much. And by that point, Bob wasn’t
worried about Cyrille Regis. He was
more interested in us giving them a
problem. People said to me it was a
lucky goal. But I said, ‘I’ve played with
Clive Allen since I was about 14.
They’re not lucky goals. He knows
what he’s doing. He knows when a
chance is going to come about in
front of goal.’ Anywhere in the box, he
was as sharp as a knife.
The celebrations at the final whistle
were immense…
It was a big thing for QPR to reach the
FA Cup final. A great thing and a lovely
thing! It was magnificent to deliver
that to the Rangers fans. Back then,
the FA Cup was so much more
prominent than it is now and to get to
Wembley was special. Nowadays, lots
of teams are playing at Wembley in
various different competitions so
there’s nothing unique about the
stadium anymore. Not in my eyes.
Whether that’s right or wrong, good
or bad, I don’t know. But it just takes
away a little bit of the magic. It was
what we used to aim for as footballers
back in my day - to play at the national
stadium. But with lots of finals,
semi-finals and play-offs held there
now, I don’t think Wembley holds that
special feeling anymore.
HOOPS
We really should have
won the replay. We had
Spurs on the ropes
On to the final, it was QPR versus
top-flight Tottenham Hotspur. We
forced a 1-1 draw and then narrowly
lost the replay 1-0. But no one gave
us a chance beforehand, did they?
No, not at all. I remember our build-up
well. We went away and trained to
work on certain aspects of our play.
We did actually look at how our
opponents played a little bit more
than we usually did. They had
big-name stars like Glenn Hoddle,
Garth Crooks and Steve Archibald.
What are you going to do to stop
them? You either match them with
your ability or you match them with
your effort. And I think we did both.
Not so much in the first game but
definitely in the replay. I believe we
gave them too much respect in the
first game. Spurs will say they
deserved to win it. But for us, to
score an equaliser with a few minutes
to go felt like a win. We were down
and out and throwing everything at
them. To grab a draw meant we had
the elation from the first game.
Hoddle gave Spurs the lead in that
first match before Terry Fenwick
headed our equaliser. It was a truly
pulsating affair, wasn’t it?
We all believe there was a foul on
our midfielder Gary Waddock just
before Spurs scored. But the
referee didn’t see it and that was
that. We didn’t look back and we
kept pushing to give it everything.
For the equaliser, we’d worked on
that throw-in routine many times.
To see it come off late in an FA
HOOPS
Cup final was just amazing. But again,
that was Terry Venables. He knew every
type of free-kick, corner, and throw-in
under the sun. Wherever we were on the
field, we were well drilled in what we
would do. So, all credit to Terry.
You were the man of the match with a
string of sprawling saves. Were you
pleased with your own performance?
Oh, absolutely. I went into the final as a
young keeper who’d only played around
30 first-team games. I’d done okay in
those matches, so I was full of
confidence. I had nothing to lose. If I
made a mistake, then people would have
said, ‘He’s just come into the side.’ And I
would’ve been forgiven. It was a bit like
facing penalties. I always felt you could
only win those situations as a keeper.
If the ball goes in, everyone says, ‘Oh,
great penalty.’ But if you save it,
everyone goes, ‘Fantastic keeper!’ I
had the bonus that my goalkeeping
coach Bob Wilson was positioned
directly behind the goal at Wembley
on cup final day in his role as a BBC TV
reporter. I remember just having a
laugh and a joke with him during the
game. There were a couple of shots
early on that went past the post.
When I retrieved the ball, I said to Bob,
‘Is that the best they’ve got? I
thought they were better than this!’
That just kept me relaxed. Luckily
enough, like all goalkeepers, my first
save that day was a great one. I tipped
it over the bar, and it made me feel
good. As the game wore on, the more
unbeatable I felt. My most pleasing
save was from Steve Archibald when
he broke through on his own. Because
I didn’t go full length one way and dive
too early, I managed to stick a hand
out and just turn the ball around
the post.
The replay took place at Wembley on
the following Thursday evening. We
did everything but score in that 1-0
defeat, didn’t we?
We really should have won the replay
as we dominated them. There’s no
doubt about that. There you go, that’s
football and that’s how it works. But
losing on the night was a bitter, bitter
disappointment. Especially as we’d
played better than the other team.
We had Spurs on the ropes the whole
time. I think I only made a couple of
saves in the entire game. We hit the
crossbar and Ray Clemence in goal for
them was making saves left, right and
centre. But despite the result,
appearing in an FA Cup final was
marvellous for the QPR players
and supporters.
THE PROGRAMME: 16 pages, price 40p
A COMMANDING performance in the west
London sunshine sealed QPR’s first victory
on our new Omniturf plastic pitch.
Andy King put the R’s ahead with his third goal in
three league games. After that, Alan Shoulder
missed a clear-cut chance to equalise for
Newcastle United with only keeper John
Burridge to beat.
King turned provider for the second Rangers
goal. His flighted corner was headed back by
Terry Fenwick and an unmarked Glenn Roeder
flicked the ball home.
With Tony Currie and Gerry Francis excelling in
midfield for the Hoops, maverick striker Simon
Stainrod grabbed the third goal with a
sweeping shot into the corner.
QPR boss Terry Venables said: “After losing at
home to Luton on Tuesday, we sorted a few
things out for today and managed to sustain
our superiority. The players raised their game
for 90 minutes and we worked hard in very hot
conditions which were overpowering.”
Newcastle manager Arthur Cox said: “Never
mind the plastic pitch. We have no complaints
about that. You simply don’t deserve to win if you
scorn the chances we had.”
In a Sunday People match report, Peter Bills
wrote: “Dancing girls before the start, a
pinch yourself to remember the venue was
in England.
years ago chairman Jim Gregory stood in
the old wooden Ellerslie Road Stand and
watched the finishing touches being made
to the new South Africa Road Stand - his
first step in the modernisation of the club.
‘Very good,’ he commented to your editor.
‘But what I really want to see here are
comfortable seated stands on all four sides
of the ground - and I’d like to see them
joined up by seats in all four corners.’
“Well, your editor thought the idea a great
one, but the cost was clearly colossal, and
the amount of work involved was greater
than any Football League club could
reasonably contemplate. So, he made polite
noises of approval… but expected to see
little more happen.
“However, your editor underestimated the
quality of this particular chairman because
he’s done it! We stand today (or sit!) in what
can justifiably claim to be one of the most
handsome stadiums in the league,
surrounded by gleaming new stands,
HOOPS
OUR CLUB AMBASSADOR’S
VIEWS ON ALL THINGS QPR…
G
ood afternoon everyone and
welcome back to the Kiyan
Prince Foundation Stadium for
today’s game against Barnsley.
Barnsley enjoyed a fantastic season last
term, reaching the play-offs, and were
very impressive when they beat us both
home and away in achieving that. They
have a talented squad with a new head
coach and have made a decent start to
this campaign having collected four points
from their opening three league fixtures.
As always, I’m sure they’ll prove to be a
very difficult opponent for us to overcome
this afternoon. You can already see how
competitive this league will be with no
team gaining maximum points. It shows
that you have to fight and earn every
single point in every single game.
I’m writing these notes prior to the trip to
Middlesbrough but I’m hoping we’ll have
added another positive result to the very
good opening week of the season.
We began the new campaign by playing
out a hard-fought draw against Millwall.
I have to say, to see the stadium here
almost full was just terrific after the 17
months or so playing with no fans in the
ground. The atmosphere was electric
and very noisy which is something I hope
will be a regular feature as the season
unfolds both here and at away grounds
around the country.
We then had to really hang on and ride
our luck a little bit to overcome Leyton
Orient on penalties to progress into the
next round of the Carabao Cup which
sees us rewarded with a home tie against
Oxford United on Tuesday evening.
Following that we then made the long trip
to Hull City last Saturday and came away
with an outstanding 3-0 win. It’s never
easy to play away at newly promoted
teams early in the season for a number
of reasons so full credit to the players
and management team to get such a
terrific result.
Like most games there was a spell in the
match when we were under pressure and
really had to dig deep to protect our lead.
46 WWW.QPR.CO.UK // @QPR // @OFFICIALQPR // OFFICIALQPRFC

HOOPS
There was some great defending and
goalkeeping at vital times which enabled
us to come through that spell and go
on to win the game comfortably in the
end. Every fixture in this league throws
up different challenges to overcome
and matches can be won and lost on
key moments in both penalty areas and
Saturday was a great example of that.
I mentioned the noise made by our fans
at the home game against Millwall which
was wonderful to see and hear but the
away support at both Leyton Orient and
Hull was absolutely outstanding. I know
the travelling fans enjoyed both the
victories gained.
A special mention and congratulations
to our manager Mark Warburton who
recently signed a new contract at the
club. There has been real progress made
in the past two seasons under Mark,
not just in terms of the improvement
in our league position in that time, but
with the manner the team play and
the development and improvement of
players both individually and collectively.
Mark will be the first to acknowledge the
role played by his support staff and also
the great work that’s been done off the
pitch and behind the scenes in moving the
club into a far better position we’re now in.
A huge well done to everyone involved.
There’s a lot of optimism and excitement
in and around the club at the moment
which is good but it’s early days into a
new season and we need to continue to
work as hard as we can every day and in
every game to get to where we want to
get to.
Once again thank you for your incredible
support and enjoy the game today.
Come on you R’s!
also apply for shares, though
they do not qualify for the
“Loftus Road, which was
formed by Chrysalis Records
founder Chris Wright,
hopes to raise around £12m
from the share issue. The
proceeds will be used to repay
The groundshare needed
approval from the Football
spokesman Chris Hull. “There
would be obvious concerns as
the same ground.”
However, after the Football
League gave their blessing,
some black and yellow seats
were installed in the Ellerslie
colours worn by Wasps. The
rugby club held the following
2000/01: 16
2001/02: 14
In April 2001, Loftus Road PLC
was put into administration
due to losses of £570,000
per month. QPR and Wasps
eventually went their separate
ways the following year.
Wasps agreed to move out of
Loftus Road to make way for
a groundshare with Fulham
The black and yellow seats
TONY INCENZO’S RECALLS SOME WEIRD AND
WONDERFUL STORIES...
STARTING OUT
I OFTEN get asked how young aspiring
journalists can get into the world of newspapers
or broadcasting.
For written jobs, a good option is to approach
your local newspaper for a work experience
placement. I started writing for the Hendon
Times when I was 18 as a ‘Neighbourhood
News’ correspondent.
This entailed trudging around all the local
schools, churches and libraries in my area
every Wednesday afternoon to pick up their
newsletters. I then wrote up the best stories and
submitted them to the paper.
The editor at the Hendon Times back then was
Dennis Signy, who was a big football man with
strong QPR connections. Dennis kindly took me
under his wing and mentored me for the early
part of my journalism career.
With regard to voice work, I would recommend
contacting your local hospital radio station as a
volunteer. Again, this was a route that I took as a
youngster as I reported on QPR home matches
for Charing Cross Hospital Radio (pictured).
I remember how nervous I was when I did my
first hospital radio broadcast via telephone from
As a youngster I reported on QPR
home matches for Charing Cross
Hospital Radio
Loftus Road. It was a really crackly line and there
was lots of noise in the stadium so I could barely
hear the presenter in the studio crossing over to
me for a goal report.
Most of my early work was unpaid. But everyone
has to start somewhere, and it was all very good
grounding for me.
I wasn’t good enough to become a footballer. But
being a football reporter is the next best thing.
|| MEMORY LANE||
AS A SPORTS JOURNALIST WITH THE EALING GAZETTE,
MIKE DONOVAN WAS A MAINSTAY OF THE LOFTUS ROAD
PRESS BOX IN THE 1970S AND 1980S. IN EACH MATCHDAY
PROGRAMME, HE LOOKS BACK ON THOSE UNFORGETTABLE
DAYS OF COVERING QUEENS PARK RANGERS…
TOMMY Docherty was on a
mission. He welcomed me
at the Queens Park Rangers
training ground in Greenford,
Middlesex, the erstwhile
sporting base for Birkbeck
College students. It was
August 1979. The sun shone,
the grass newly mown and
pre-season was getting
under way.
The idea was a sit down in
a quiet corner to discuss
the upcoming season with
the Doc, arguably the most
ebullient R’s manager of
them all. To see how the
club could bounce back into
the top flight at the first
attempt following relegation
and the departure of Steve
Burtenshaw, the third Rangers
boss in 22 months following
Frank Sibley and the returning
Alec Stock.
I should have expected the
unexpected from first-hand
experience. In the May, I was
expectant - can’t remember
why - in catching the Doc at
the Kensington Hilton for an
‘exclusive interview’ on his
second coming in the QPR
hotseat; the first in 1968
having lasted just 29 days
before he left after a row
over transfer policy. Instead,
I wasted a few hours waiting
in the dimly lit reception area
of the swanky hotel just off
Shepherd’s Bush Green with
only the occasional guest
checking in for company rather
than the charismatic Scot.
Yet in the shadow of the
Birkbeck changing rooms, the
great man stood in front me.
Surely, my expectations were
to be met with a one-to-one
chat in a leafier setting than a
hotel reception.
HOOPS
And they were. But in an
unorthodox way. He told me
he was having to go straight
off to Loftus Road but that I
could accompany him in his
silver luxury club car down
the A4.
So, I sat in the passenger
seat, pen and notebook in
hand, firing off questions
to Docherty the driver as
we sped - safely - along the
way to London W12. He was
upbeat, amusing, forthright
and honest in his answers.
The Doc was not far off
succeeding in returning the
R’s to Division One - as the
Premier League was known in
those days - but fell just four
points short and the following
May he and the club parted
company. Briefly.
He told me when it happened:
“I was sacked. I was shocked
Docherty was one of
the game’s most colourful
characters. But he was a
proper football man
by the decision. It wasn’t
by mutual consent as was
originally stated. I walked out
in my last spell here but this
time there was no way I would
do that. I just couldn’t afford
to. The players are very upset
at me going.”
The club did an immediate
U-turn before chairman Jim
Gregory dismissed him five
months later. And there would
be no third coming for the
former Scotland, Chelsea
and Manchester United
manager who was famed for
declaring he had ‘more clubs
than [golfer] Jack Nicklaus.’
He moved to Australia to
boss Sydney Olympic and
completed his career having
been in charge of 13 clubs.
Docherty, who passed away
on 31st December 2020 aged
92, was one of the game’s
most colourful characters.
But he was a proper football
man. Steeped in the game, he
played at right-half for Celtic,
Preston North End, whom he
helped to the 1951 Division
Two title, and Arsenal.
He was also in the Scotland
squad, alongside his great pal
Dave Mackay, for the 1958
World Cup.
HOOPS
But he was best known for
his managerial career. It was
sometimes a roller coaster.
He was in charge at Old
Trafford when United were
relegated to the second tier
for the first time since 1968,
before bouncing straight back
and lifting the 1977 FA Cup.
He led Chelsea to the 1965
League Cup but was in charge
when they lost the 1967 FA
Cup final against Mackay’s
Tottenham Hotspur.
He hit the headlines when
an affair with United physio
Laurie Brown’s wife Mary was
exposed in 1977. It led to the
break-up of his 27-year-old
marriage to first wife Agnes.
He later married Mary and
they were still together when
he died.
Docherty was a controversial
character who was never
short of an opinion. On top
of the non-sugar-coating
interview with him claiming
he had been given the
boot, he said in my book
Football Braveheart: The
Authorised Biography of Dave
Mackay: “He [Mackay] was
a tremendous player. World
class. If you wanted to play
football, he’d play football. If
you wanted to rough it, well
you picked the wrong man.”
And he was a popular afterdinner
speaker after retiring
from football in 1988.
It was a life lived and the Doc
was full of it when I took that
WOMEN
QPR 6
STEVENAGE 0
QPR FC Women got their 2021/22
campaign off to a fine start last weekend
courtesy of a 6-0 victory over Stevenage
FC Women at the Powerday Stadium.
The emphatic scoreline certainly didn’t
flatter the hosts, with goals from Alice Curr,
Sue Kumaning, Danielle Maloney, Brogan
Moore and a double from Demi Edwards
wrapping up a comfortable afternoon for
the R’s.
In what was the first Rangers clash at
Hanwell Town Football Club, QPR’s new
home ground following promotion to
the FA Women’s National League, it was
the visitors who appeared poised to take
an early lead with Lily Bruno looking to
threaten Lucie White in goal.
However, it was Rangers who went in front
with 16 minutes on the clock. A fine run
and pull back from Melanie Hall eventually
picked out Curr on the edge of the box
and she smashed home her first strike in a
Hoops shirt.
That was pretty much it in terms of
goalmouth action during the first half,
but Steve Quashie’s side doubled
their advantage six minutes after the
restart thanks to a fine curling strike
from Kumaning.
Substitute Edwards, who had only arrived
on the field moments earlier, quickly made
it three, when her wonderful effort nestling
into the bottom corner of the net.
It wasn’t all one-way traffic. A chance for
the visitors came in the 64th minute with
Kristal Clarke firing over, but within a matter
of seconds Quashie’s side were four to
the good.
This time it was defender Maloney who
found the net when her looping free-kick
from distance bounced over everyone and
found its way in.
In the 79th minute Moore made it five,
before Edwards struck her second and
Rangers’ sixth with virtually the last kick of
the game to cap off a perfect start to life in
the FA Women’s National League for QPR.
Quashie’s side are back in action tomorrow
(2pm) when they travel to Glentworth
Sports Club to face Kent Football United.
QPR: White, Redhead-Ling (Cutler 74),
Lewin, Grieve (Jordinson 80), Maloney,
Searle, Blodgett, Kumaning, Hennessy (Pope
OUR EXTRA TIME GROUP RETURNS
WEDNESDAY 4TH AUGUST
SAW THE RETURN OF OUR
POPULAR OVER-60S GROUP,
WITH OUR LOCAL SENIOR
CITIZENS MEETING UP IN
PERSON FOR THE FIRST TIME
SINCE MARCH 2020.
First launched in 2009, Extra Time would run
every Wednesday, helping isolated groups
engage with each other, as well as encouraging
physical activity.
However, due to the Coronavirus pandemic and
much of the group being extremely vulnerable, they
had to turn to the internet, with weekly WhatsApp
calls keeping them connected throughout the
tough period.
Thankfully, following the easing of Covid
restrictions, our Extra Time group were able to
meet in person once again, with Hammersmith Park
the ideal location.
With more than 20 members turning up, it was a
fantastic occasion for all involved and the perfect
social interaction that everyone had longed for.
Fiona Hodgson, Business Development Manager
for the Trust, said: “It was wonderful to see so many
members of the Extra Time group, especially after
not seeing them since the start of March last year.
“Everyone was in great spirits and is now looking
forward to the group starting their regular sessions
again from September.”
Participants Mary and Rose added: “It’s so nice to
see each other again. We’ve been inside now for
so long, so to be out and enjoying the sunshine is
just fantastic.
“We’ve missed the group so much. We used to
enjoy going for a chat each week - it was something
we looked forward to, but we just haven’t been able
to go. To now see this many people together again
is just wonderful.
“During the lockdown we were able to keep in touch
through technology, which we learned at QPR, so
that was a godsend - but to meet up again in the
flesh has been fantastic.
“Of course, QPR rang us every week during the
lockdown and for some of us that was our only
social interaction. It meant so much and we can’t
thank the club and the group enough.”
Columnist
W
THE JOURNALIST AND BROADCASTER
PENS HIS LATEST COLUMN…
ell, what a couple of
weeks it’s been.
I knew Millwall would be no pushover on the
opening day and so it proved. Jed Wallace always
impresses me, and I really don’t know how he
hasn’t moved to the Premier League.
His fine left-footed hooked strike was more
than matched, though, by Rob Dickie’s brilliant
equaliser. Needless to say, it almost felt like the
last 18 months had never happened.
Myself, Dean Spencer (pictured left) and my
Millwall mate Jack Dalton (right) thoroughly
enjoyed our afternoon. We had pie and mash
on Uxbridge Road beforehand - and a couple of
pints in the Defector’s on the Green afterwards.
We all braved the queues on Ellerslie Road as
the club’s ticket scanning system faltered. The
line was only equalled by the number of people
outside the club shop as fans again went in
search of the new shirt.
Dean and I went to Leyton Orient the following
Wednesday to see Rangers prevail on penalties
in the Carabao Cup. I’d never seen QPR in a
penalty shoot-out before.
In fact, this was only the fourth I’d witnessed in
more than 1,000 first-class games. One of those
came the previous night when I took in Crawley’s
defeat to Gillingham in the same competition.
The atmosphere at Brisbane Road was one to
behold. We had the East Stand to ourselves
and the atmosphere on a balmy evening on
Leyton High Road afterwards was one of fun and
optimism among the QPR contingent.
I saw former Aston Villa, Birmingham and West
Brom defender Liam Ridgewell in the away end.
I used to cover him in the West Midlands in my
newspaper days.
I recall a colleague as far back as 2007 telling me
Liam was a QPR fan and had totally dismissed
that it could be true. But, sure enough, there
he was!
I’m sure he’d have been proud of Dickie’s
header, too!
