Welcome to our guide that sets out the 500-plus

courses and learning opportunities on offer from

September 2021.

With Covid restrictions easing we look forward to seeing

more learners able to attend our campuses across the

county this year, to enjoy learning in modern, spacious

classrooms and socialising in real-life settings.

There are also lots of online courses for those who

prefer to study remotely and we’ll be continuing our

blended learning approach which offers a combination

of both online and face-to-face lessons.

Safety measures remain in place across our campuses,

to make our learners feel completely safe.

As life continues to evolve post-pandemic, so do we.

We have a new name “Northumberland Skills” and a

new look to take us further into the 21st Century.

We want every resident of Northumberland to have

the chance to develop skills to advance their careers,

find work, change direction or just try their hand at

something new.

With a wide variety of courses on offer, from lots of

vocational skills such as construction and health and

social care, to essential maths and English and digital

skills, languages and creative classes – we know there’s

something for everybody.

Our courses, which offer a range of qualifications and

accreditations, have been designed to help people

meet their goals and to enrich their lives through

learning.

Welcome to your fresh guide to learning across

Northumberland with courses from September 2021.

Delivering on behalf of Northumberland County

Council’s Learning & Skills Service, we have evolved

to become “Northumberland Skills” and we’re here to

help you learn, discover and grow.

We offer a variety of part-time courses designed to help

you advance your career, retrain, find employment or

explore new skills. Our experienced team of lecturers

are ready to support you to realise your potential and to

keep you connected, motivated and inspired.

KEEPING LEARNING LOCAL

With eight campuses across the county, you don’t

have to travel far to be inspired – the possibilities for

personal and professional growth are endless!

Or, if you prefer remote learning, you can pick

courses that are delivered online. We even offer

blended courses which are a combination of online

and face-to-face classes.

We have put measures in place to ensure that you

To help you navigate your learning

options, we have created a three-step

process to ensure achieving your goals

is as easy and accessible as possible.

LEARNING WITH US

We recognise that returning to the classroom can

be both an exciting and daunting prospect. This first

step is about feeling supported and confident as you

choose your pathway – from financing your studies

to understanding exactly what and how you will learn.

Our friendly team of lecturers are here to help.

Some learners are entitled to study for free as

long as they meet specific criteria for fee waiver,

including those:

AGED 19+ YEARS

• Studying English or maths up to Level 2, incl. GCSE

and don’t currently have grades A* to C / 4-9 passes

EXPLORE OUR COURSES

AGED 19-23 YEARS

Our course listings give you the dates, times and

locations of our 500-plus part-time courses so you can

choose the best option to suit your goals and aspirations.

Many courses are free, but for those carrying a fee, we

have flexible payment options and offer financial support

you may be eligible for.

• Undertaking a Traineeship

• Unemployed and studying up to and including

Level 2 (specific eligibility criteria apply)

• Studying first full Level 2 or full Level 3 qualification

(specific eligibility criteria apply)

LOW WAGE FLEXIBILITY

Once you’ve chosen your course, get in touch to

secure your place and build your qualifications,

accreditations and skills. You’ll find everything you

need in this section to enrol online or over the

telephone, and if you have any questions or need

extra support just let us know and we can help.

• You may qualify for full fee

remission if you are employed but

earning an annual gross salary

of less than £16,009.50. Eligibility

criteria apply and evidence will

need to be presented to enrol.

MAKING YOUR STUDIES AFFORDABLE

We constantly assess our courses to give you the best

possible learning experience, and there’s a range of

financial options available to support your study.

19+ LEARNER LOANS

Advanced Learner Loans are Government funded and

provided to help learners with their fees. It’s easy to

apply, doesn’t take your household income into account

and doesn’t involve a credit check. Repayments won’t

start until you are earning over £25,000 a year.

BURSARY FUNDS

EMPLOYER CONNECTIONS

Our business networks and strong employer

partnerships offer you a competitive edge. We have

a range of employers endorsing our courses, so

that you can feel assured that your qualifications are

industry relevant.

LEARN YOUR WAY

We offer a choice of face-to-face classes, online study

or a mixture of both. Whether it’s classroom based or

practical skills, your safety is a priority and the latest

Government safety advice will be implemented.

You can also take advantage of opportunities for

independent study and work experience.

This fund is used to support learners with travel

expenses, childcare or additional learning support.

ARMED FORCES

If you have left the British Armed Forces within the last

10 years after completing four or more years of service,

or have been medically discharged after completing

basic training, you are entitled to full funding if you’re

studying your first full Level 2 or Level 3 qualification.

FLEXIBLE PAYMENTS

Lots of our courses are FREE and we have flexible

payment plans in place if you can’t pay all your

fees upfront. These apply to all courses valued at

£150 or more.
