Messenger photos by Dedra Cordle
Grove City resident Samantha DeCastro, 4, (top right) is always
on the look-out for an adventure and she found it just down the
road as the city hosted its annual EcoFest event in the Town
Center Park on Aug. 14. Though the primary mission of the
event is to highlight sustainable projects and programs within
the community, it also offers a fun time for children and adults
looking for hands-on activities. Here, DeCastro turns to tell her
mother her findings after she closely examines a geode at the
Class2Trail station. Class2Trail specializes in hands-on, discovery
oriented environmental education programs for children
in grades 1 through 8. Courses are offered through the
city’s parks and recreation department (visit parks.grovecityohio.gov
for more information).
Travis Sidelinger (bottom right) takes this Atlas Trike out for a
spin during the event. Josh Stamper, the co-owner of the local
bike shop Heritage Cycles, said this model is almost always
out of stock because of its reputation as a reliable mode of
transportation that is also comfortable for the body.
Below, Deb Orlando, the president of the Grove City Arts
Council, helps Sophia Costell put the finishing touches on her
handmade T-shirt that was decorated with all of her favorite
animals. Orlando said she was surprised by the number of children
and adults who came through the Art and Kids Zone to
make their own T-shirts. “We have had about 100 people make
their own T-shirts today so it’s been unexpectedly busy but so
much fun. They all seem to be having a great time making art.”
Mask policy in
place for SWCS
By Dedra Cordle
Staff Writer
South-Western City School officials say
the decision to wear a facial covering will
be left up to the individual.
In its back-to-school newsletter
released on Aug. 6, the district announced
they would no longer require students and
staff to wear facial coverings at the start of
the 2021-22 school year. Instead, the district
will recommend masks be worn to
protect themselves and others against
COVID-19 but the policy will not be
enforced.
District officials say they came to this
determination through a “number of conversations
with public health officials” and
“the experiences they learned during the
last school year and throughout the summer.”
They said they will continue to follow
layered protocols recommended by public
health boards to mitigate the potential spread of
COVID-19 in their schools.
“We are continuing many of our practices and protocols
from last school year, which include but are not
limited to physical distancing, hand washing and respiratory
etiquette and cleaning and maintaining
healthy facilities including ventilation improvements,”
wrote Sandra Nekoloff, the district’s executive director
of communications, in an email.
She added that the district will also continue to follow
the Ohio Department of Health’s quarantine and
contact tracing guidelines; recommend but not require
(COVID-19) vaccines; make appropriate accommodations
for students with disabilities; and follow federal
orders on transportation protocols.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
(CDC) is requiring that all students who take public
transportation to school wear a facial covering while
they are on the bus.
The public reaction to the district’s announcement
that it would be a ‘mask-friendly’ district for the start
of the 2021-22 school year on Aug. 25 was mixed. For
every person who celebrated the decision, there was
one who expressed disappointment.
Chandra Fredrick was one of those who were disappointed
by the district’s decision not to require masks
for its students and staff. On Aug. 9, she came before
the board of education at its regular meeting to ask the
district to reconsider its choice.
Fredrick said one of her children, a 10-year-old who
is going into his fifth grade year, is immunocompromised
and she fears for his safety should she send him
to school with the current guidelines in place.
She said prior to the revised mask policy announcement,
she and her husband had enough confidence in
the district’s decision-making process regarding
COVID-19 protocols last year that they re-enrolled
their three children after nearly a year of home-schooling.
“Because our district did such a great job with
COVID precautions last year, we felt comfortable
enrolling our kids in school for the fall,” said Fredrick.
“But now, you’re throwing away the most important
method of protection for our unvaccinated kids by not
requiring masks in school.
“We know that masks work. We know the science.
You’re an education board, you teach science. We know
that masks work. We know masks are the reason that
transmission in our schools was so low last year. You
can say that you care about all of our kids but your current
policy demonstrates the opposite.”
Fredrick said her child wants to go to school, wants
to catch up with his friends and wants to get involved
in activities. She said she wants to send him to school
but is filled with anxiety by the thought of doing so if
the district maintains its current policy. She said children
who are immunocompromised or disabled should
not have to find alternative methods of learning simply
because “some parents don’t want their kids to wear a
mask.”
Shortly before this article went to press, Governor
Mike DeWine urged school districts throughout the
state to reconsider their mask policies if they have not
mandated its use. “At the very least,” he wrote on this
official Twitter account, “consider requiring masks for
the next few weeks when we know the spread level will
be very high.”
As of press time, district officials maintain they will
begin the school year with its current requirements
and protocols in place. They said their policies could
change if mandates were to change.
In March, the state legislature passed
Senate Bill 22 which allows lawmakers to
rescind health orders like the mask mandate
via concurrent resolution, which circumvents
the governor. It also blocks local
health departments from banning mass
gatherings or closing schools unless a dangerous
communicable disease becomes
unusually prevalent.
In July, Franklin County Public Health
and Columbus Public Health recommended
universal masking policies for all students
and staff members in the upcoming 2021-22
school year — even if they are fully vaccinated.
Children under the age of 12 are not yet
eligible to receive the COVID-19 vaccination.

Grove City Editor
Many communities throughout the state
of Ohio have seen the effects of the opioid
epidemic and Grove City is no exception.
The state of Ohio and many municipalities,
including Grove City, have joined
together in litigation to hold pharmaceutical
supply chain participants accountable
for damages they have caused. A proposed
settlement has been reached with
AmerisourceBergen, Cardinal Health and
McKesson. Under the proposal, the companies
will pay over $800 million to the state
of Ohio and its communities over 18 years.
At its Aug. 16 meeting, Grove City
Council approved a resolution to accept the
settlement with the pharmaceutical supply
chain participants for their role in the opioid
crisis.
Most of the money will be restricted in
use and earmarked to combat the opioid
epidemic.
“This is the best resolution that we’re
going to see,” said Stephen Smith, law
director for the city of Grove City. “The
reality is that the money is going to go into
a bunch of different pots — all of them used
to fight the effects of the opioid crisis.”
Smith said the city could be eligible for
payments somewhere in the range of
$105,000 to $150,000.
“It isn’t perfect,” said Smith, “but it is in
our best interest.”
The law director also said the city could
submit an application to access more funding.
Those applications would be considered
by a review board.
Ohio is one of several states to share in
the $26 billion national opioid abuse settlement.
More than 4,000 entities nationwide
are part of the overall settlement.
According to Ohio Attorney General
Dave Yost, Ohio could get $808 million
from the distributors. He said this is the
best opportunity for the many communities
hit hard by the opioid crisis to begin to
recover.
“We need to put these resources to work
in our local communities for treatment,
prevention and education,” said Yost. “We
desperately need this money on the ground
combatting the opioid epidemic.”
Under the plan, the settlement money
would be distributed locally with 55 percent
going to a foundation created to disburse
the money and fund programs that
would benefit Ohioans affected by the
drugs, 30 percent set aside for community
recovery programs at the local level, and 15
percent going to the state.
The settlement would also require the
pharmaceutical supply companies to follow
increased and improved measures to identify
suspicious orders and pharmacy customers,
under the oversight of an independent
third-party monitor.
According to the Grove City Division of
Police annual report, there were 167 heroin
overdoses reported in Grove City in 2020.
In Education
By Dedra Cordle
Staff Writer
The South-Western City Schools
District is preparing for its third round of
federal COVID-19 relief funds.
At its meeting on Aug. 9, the board of
education was presented with a projected
spending plan for its $61.1 million allocation
through The Elementary and
Secondary School Emergency Relief Fund
(ESSER). The plan includes infrastructure
improvements, learning loss initiatives,
and the construction of additional classroom
space at some of its buildings.
According to Treasurer Hugh Garside,
this recent allocation comes with the
requirement that 20 percent of the total
sum be set aside to focus on student learning
loss caused during the course of the
pandemic.
He said the district’s objective to
address this issue will be to continue summer
school programming through 2023,
partner with the YMCA of Central Ohio for
social and emotional support for students
in grades K-6, hire five student support
liaisons for its four high schools, and allocate
funds to each school for individual
building initiatives for tutoring services.
The district also plans to use this portion
of funds to purchase additional
Chromebooks over the course of three
years. The district’s first round of ESSER
funds (approximately $6.5 million) primarily
went toward the purchase of
Chromebooks to provide each student with
a laptop to take home.
The remaining $45.6 million is projected
to be spent on updating facilities and
operations. Under the plan, all five of the
intermediate schools will receive HVAC
renovations as would Central Crossing
High School and the South-Western
Career Academy. The recreational centers
at Grove City, Franklin Heights, and
Westland High Schools would also receive
HVAC renovations.
Other objectives include adding classrooms
to Hayes Intermediate and to reconfigure
space at Buckeye Woods and Darby
Woods Elementary. There are also plans to
demolish the greenhouse at the SWCA to
make room for additional classroom space.
Jackson Township
offers bulk trash drop-off
The Jackson Township Bulk Trash
Drop-off for all Jackson Township, city of
Grove City and village of Urbancrest residents
will be open weekdays from 8 a.m. to
4 p.m. through Sept. 24 at the Jackson
Township Administration Building, 3756
Hoover Road. Residents must check in at
the Jackson Township Administration
office prior to unloading.
news and notes
Board member David Donofrio asked
why the demolition of the greenhouse was
necessary. Superintendent Dr. Bill Wise
said it was because the horticulture program
has been discontinued at that location.
“It hasn’t been offered as part of our
career tech pathway for several years now,
partially because of student interest and
partially because of the market and the
credentialing,” Wise said.
He said they felt they can make “much
better use of the space” with the proposed
demolition of the greenhouse.
If there are reserves left over from their
ESSER III allocation, the district plans to
purchase a facility for a preschool near
West Broad Street, address the HVAC
issues at the District Service Center, and
construct four classroom additions at Holt
Crossing Intermediate School.
The board of education had no objection
to the proposed ESSER III spending plan.
With the approval, the plan will now be
sent to the Ohio Department of Education
for Review. Should the state board raise
objections with the plan, amendments will
be made during future meetings. All
ESSER III funds must be spent by
September 2024.
Garside said should they receive
approval from the state, they will quickly
move forward with the process to get the
planned construction started.
“Due to the economic state we’re in right
now in the country with inflation and the
supply chain issues, we’re going to try to
get moving on these projects as fast as possible
so we can get the most bang for our
buck,” he said.
This will likely be the district’s last allocation
of federal COVID-19 relief funds. In
addition to the $6.5 million they received
during the allocation of ESSER I funds,
they also received an allocation of $27.2
million in ESSER II funds during the 2020-
2021 school year. Those funds were primarily
spent on establishing the Virtual
Learning Academy, the purchase of
Chromebooks and the purchase of cleaning
supplies and materials. Garside said only
40 percent (or $10.8 million) of that allocation
remains but it should be spent by the
end of fiscal year 2021-22.
Accepted items include: residential bulk
trash, tires (limit of four) and scrap metal.
The following items are not accepted: batteries,
motors, light bulbs, hazardous
waste (chemicals, oils, paints), TVs and
monitors. Throughout the year, residents
can drop off electronics or e-waste at the
Jackson Township Administration
Building, 3756 Hoover Road, weekdays, 8
a.m. to 4 p.m., except holidays.
Township unveils wish list of road improvements
By Dedra Cordle
Staff Writer
Jackson Township is eyeing infrastructure
improvements for a number of its residential
roads.
At the Aug. 17 board of trustees meeting,
Township Administrator Shane
Farnsworth unveiled a ‘wish list’ of subdivisions
roads they would like to see
repaired next year through grant funding
provided by the Ohio Public Works
Commission.
Farnsworth told the board that the
township and the Franklin County
Engineer’s Office have been working for
several months to identify the roads most
in need of repair and believe they have
crafted a solid list of candidates.
“We feel that these are all subdivisions
streets within our community that warrant
resurfacing repairs,” he said.
There are eight subdivisions identified
on the OPWC proposed resurfacing project
list, along with three solo roads and boulevards.
The subdivisions and the subdivision
roads slated for potential milling and
resurfacing include:
•Anglebrook (Anglebrook Drive,
Mayfair Court N, Mayfair Court S, and
Mayfair Drive.)
•Briar Hill (Briarbrook Drive)
•Briarwood Hills (Berry Hill Drive,
Hillwood Drive Hunting Creek Drive,
Gyerwood Court)
•Grub Farms (Betty Lane, Vern Place)
•Holton Park Estates (Holton Run
Court, Rockycreek Drive)
•Lynnbrook (Karina Court, Lynnbrook
•Southern Grove Estates (Chancellor
Drive, Williamsburg Court)
The three roads and boulevards on the
proposed resurfacing project list include
Casa Boulevard and Borror and Edwards
roads.
Farnsworth also said the township
would seek a federal grant through the
Ohio Department of Transportation to
repair and resurface the seven streets and
roads that comprise the Emersonia
Subdivision.
Under the terms of the OPWC grant, the
township would have to provide a local
match of 25 percent toward the total cost of
the project. Farnsworth said he did not
have a projected cost estimated at this
time.
Under the terms of the ODOT Township
Stimulus Program, the department would
cover the cost of any project up to $250,000.
Farnsworth said an early estimate of the
Emersonia road resurfacing project is
$255,000.
The township has until September to
apply for the OPWC grant project and until
November to apply for the ODOT project.
He said that should the township
receive funding for both projects, it will put
their residential roads in good shape for “a
long time.”
“All of our roads would be in good condition
for the next decade,” he said.
He told the board if the township is
granted funding for these projects, the
resurfacing repair work could start next
year.
Fire safety measures taken in Pleasant Township
Fire safety was discussed at the Aug. 10
Pleasant Township board meeting.
The Pleasant Township Fire
Department has purchased a new hose
tester. The hose the department received
last year requires a higher pressure for
yearly testing to meet the National Fire
Protection Association’s standard. This
increases the danger to personnel using a
fire apparatus pump in the event of a failure.
This new tester will hold the pressure,
but in the event of a failure, the pressure
will immediately reduce to zero. Using a
fire apparatus pump, during a failure,
pressure remains in the hose and can cause
it to whip around potentially injuring
members of the department.
“This was purchased to make testing of
a fire hose safer in lieu of using a third
party testing agency,” said Fire Chief
Brian Taylor.
The National Fire Protection
Association requires the testing of all nozzles
and appliances.
Q: What are floaters and what causes them?
A: Floaters are small dark shapes that move across your vision. They can appear
as dots, threads, squiggly lines, or even like cobwebs. Most floaters are caused
by normal changes in the eye. As you age, small strands of vitreous (gel-like fluid
that fills your eye) can clump together and cast a shadow on your retina (the
light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye). Those shadows appear as floaters
that drift across your vision. You may notice floaters more when you look at a
bright background, like a computer screen or a blue sky.
Q: How often should someone with new
floaters get an eye exam?
A: Someone experiencing new floaters, a large increase in the number of floaters,
or flashing lights should see an eye care professional immediately. Sometimes
floaters have a more serious cause, including: infection, injury, inflammation,
bleeding, retinal tear or retinal detachment.
Someone with a few stable floaters should see an eye care professional at least
once a year for a comprehensive dilated eye exam.
Schedule your comprehensive eye exam
LABOR DAY
Unique ways to celebrate Labor Day
Labor Day was created by the labor movement to shine
light on the achievements and contributions of workers.
Without hardworking men and women, the economy would
not thrive and the prosperity of a nation would be unlikely.
Like many other holidays, Labor Day’s message may
play second fiddle to the more widespread celebrations
that take place. It’s easy to think that Labor Day commemorates
the unofficial end of summer rather than the North
American worker, but those who want to celebrate more
mindfully can consider these ideas.
• Research local industry and schedule a tour of a factory,
farm or another place of business that ties into this
industry.
• While many people are off on Labor Day, essential
workers may not be. Bring lunch to a police station or firehouse,
or simply thank workers you come across, such as
grocery store employees, for doing their jobs.
• Active military who are deployed may be missing
home, especially during national holidays. Send a care
package to them that they can enjoy overseas.
• Purchase items made domestically to support national
industry.
• Bosses can reach out to employees with words of
praise and encouragement. Too often employees are told
what they need to improve rather than what they are
doing right. A few words of gratitude can buoy spirits.
• Employers can start the three-day weekend early by
enabling workers to leave a few hours early on the Friday
preceding the holiday weekend.
• Organize a company-based competition, like a chili
cook-off, pie-eating contest or video game competition. This
After a one-year delay due to the pandemic, Faith Community
Church of God returns to the roundabout with a more varied,
diverse and much wider range of talent for the 2021 Singspiration.
The headliners this year are the group, InnerVision.
InnerVision is the duo of life-long friends Genene Blackwell and
Sam Shepherd. Since 2009 this award-winning band and Nashville
recording artists have brought joy and inspiration through music to
thousands with both live performances as well as through their selftitled
debut CD.
Since forming in high school, InnerVision has been entertaining
audiences of all sizes and ages all over Ohio and beyond with quite
possibly the most diverse song lists of any professional musicians
in central Ohio.
can boost morale and strengthen connections among staff.
Labor Day is often dominated by backyard barbecues
and trips to the beach. Those who want to be more in touch
with the meaning behind the holiday can look for additional
ways to celebrate it.
Labor Day is a celebration of workers
and the labor movements in the United
States and Canada. Often considered the
unofficial end of summer, Labor Day
prompts many people to travel for one last
getaway prior to the arrival of fall.
Labor Day get-togethers with family
and friends typically include barbecues and
other outdoor activities, and these gatherings
may attract loved ones from various
areas of the country. The National Safety
Council warns that thousands of people
will be injured in traffic accidents during
the upcoming Labor Day weekend.
In recent years, traffic fatalities over
Labor Day weekend have averaged around
15 percent higher than in similar, non-holiday
periods, says the NSC. In addition, the
COVID-19 virus is still at large. Travelers
are urged to remain diligent in regard to
hygiene and other safety practices. The following
tips can help Labor Day travelers
stay as safe as possible.
• Call ahead and inquire about any
travel restrictions. Many areas of the country
have reopened, but it is important to
LABOR DAY
Travel safety tips for your holiday weekend
find out if there are restrictions on crowd
limits or if certain facilities are closed.
• Book early and leave time for travel.
People are increasingly anxious to travel
once again, and may wait until the Labor
Day holiday to do so. Hotels and other
amenities may fill up fast, so book travel
plans well in advance and leave ample time
for traveling to account for large crowds
and busy roadways.
• Enforce a zero tolerance policy for
intoxicated driving. Those who are planning
to drink should never get behind the
wheel. Also, young drivers are at particular
risk to be involved in alcohol-related crashes,
so teens and underage young adults
should not be allowed to drink at parties.
• Limit distractions behind the wheel.
Make a policy that the vehicle is a distraction-free
zone. This includes keeping the
radio low, stowing the driver’s cell phone
out of reach so texts or other notifications
do not become distractions and helping to
keep children occupied so they’re not making
a ruckus.
• Exercise caution in inclement weather.
Late-summer storms can roll in and
cause downpours. Drive slowly and cautiously,
pulling over until visibility and
conditions improve, if necessary.
Following a 14-month touring hiatus due to
the worldwide pandemic, touring has resumed for
legendary singer, songwriter and author Bill
Gaither and his multi-Grammy Award winning
Gaither Vocal Band. Grove City Church of the
Nazarene in Grove City will host a spectacular
evening of music, laughter and encouragement on
Saturday, August 21 at 6 p.m.
gospel classics, as well as refreshing, inspiring
new favorites, embraced by audiences of all ages
and backgrounds. Over the years, few events have
had the ability to unite individuals from all walks
of life the way Gaither concerts have done for
many years.
County to increase access
to mental health services
Franklin County has launched a new online tool to connect residents
and families with national and local resources to address
their mental and emotional health challenges.
The website, FranklinCountyOhio.CredibleMind.com, allows
residents to take a self-paced approach to learn about more than
200 different emotional and mental health topics and find mental
health providers in Franklin County.
“The pandemic and economic downturn have had a major toll
on people’s mental and emotional well-being,” said Joy Bivens,
deputy franklin county administrator for health and human services.
“This platform allows us to meet people where they are. It’s
judgement-free, it’s evidence-based and it’s easy to use — whether
you’re just looking for some mindfulness exercises to cope with
stress or searching for a mental health provider.”
The website was funded by the board of commissioners and
supports the work of the Rise Together Blueprint to Reduce
Poverty in Franklin County by increasing access to mental health
services. It was developed in collaboration with county health and
human services agencies, including the Department of Job and
Family Services (JFS), and the Alcohol, Drug and Mental Health
Board of Franklin County (ADAMH).
“Additional support for well-being is welcomed right now.
Easily accessible, quality support tools help to bury the stigma
around asking for help. It is up to all of us to help change the perception
that asking for help is a sign of weakness. Taking care of
our mental health makes us stronger,” said Erika Clark Jones,
CEO for ADAMH.
The website offers more than a dozen different self-assessments
to help visitors get a better idea of their mental health profile.
After completing the assessment, visitors are referred to a
variety of resources — articles, videos, podcasts and more — all tailored
based off their results. All the resources are vetted by
experts and all the assessment tools are confidential.
The site provides direct links to ADAMH’s network of more
than 30 local behavioral health providers. Residents can also get
information about obtaining Medicaid, which covers mental
health and addiction treatment, through JFS as well as resources
from other health and human services agencies like Office on
Aging, Child Support Enforcement and Justice Policy and
Programs.
American Red Cross
is in need of volunteer drivers
The American Red Cross needs transportation specialists in
central Ohio to deliver blood. These volunteer drivers will either
pick up blood products from the Red Cross processing facility at
995 E. Broad Street and deliver the boxes to area hospitals and/or
pick up blood from drive locations around central Ohio and deliver
it to Broad Street.
Transportation specialists help ensure that blood products are
available when and where they are needed for hospital use such
as for trauma victims, surgery patients, those receiving cancer
and sickle cell treatment among other serious medical conditions.
The American Red Cross is experiencing a severe blood shortage
as the number of trauma cases, organ transplants and elective
surgeries rise — and deplete the nation’s blood inventory.
“The donation of the blood is the first step in the process,” said
Wendy Yarbrough, regional donor services executive. “Once the
blood is collected, we need to ensure it gets to its intended destination
quickly and safely. That’s why volunteer transportation
specialists are so crucial to this lifesaving process.”
No special transportation license is needed for this position.
Volunteers will drive Red Cross cars or standard mini vans. To be
eligible, prospective volunteers must have a valid driver’s license,
three years driving experience and a safe driving record.
Transportation specialists must be able to lift 45 pounds.
In Entertainment
Theatrical adaptations of video games
rarely give supporting characters more
than a passing glance. Much like the medium
they are pulling content from, they use
the secondary players to serve at the whim
of the leads and to be as disposable as necessary
(e.g., be harmed, maimed, or killed)
in order to advance the plot — should there
be one, that is. But the latest theatrical
adaptation of a video game turns that common
practice on its head, asking the question
as to what would happen if that throwaway
character took the reins. The result
is one of the most original and enjoyable
movies to ever come out of this genre.
In “Free Guy,” Ryan Reynolds stars as
the not-so-free Guy, a non-player character
in an extremely violent open-world shooter
game called “Free City.” Within the confines
of this game, which is loosely based
on the “Grand Theft Auto” franchise, Guy
and his fellow non-player characters are
unaware of their artificial reality, happily
going about their day while humans in the
real world don avatars (or skins) to cause
mayhem on their streets so they can level
up to acquire bigger and better weapons
and skills.
Because of the way the NPC’s are coded,
they do not question that random punch to
their face, they do not ask why someone
held up their bank, and they do not
demand accountability for all of the horrible
things they see taking place. But that
passive worldview begins to change, however,
when Guy has a random encounter
with a mysterious woman.
While walking to work with his friend
Buddy (Lil Rel Howery) and expressing
their desire for a heist free day at the bank,
Guy overhears a woman humming a
Mariah Carey tune. Having never heard
another person singing this song before,
Guy strikes up a conversation with her but
is puzzled by her strange behavior. He
chalks it up to her being “one of the sunglasses
people,” but what he does not know
is that this MolotovGirl (Jodie Comer) is a
real person who donned an avatar to get
inside the game.
Thinking that this encounter was just a
random glitch in the matrix, MolotovGirl
(aka Millie) pays Guy little mind and sets
off to plumb the depths of the game
because its founder stole her software code.
But what she does not, could not know,
was that this was a transformative experience
for the lovelorn Guy.
Feeling that there is now “something
more” out there, Guy decides that he will
change his routine for the day. He will
order a different coffee, he will tell a different
joke, and he will definitely stand up
when his bank is robbed.
During the latter action, Guy snatches
the sunglasses off of the robber’s face and
discovers the world that humans see while
playing in front of their screens. There are
suggestions for how many points can be
www.columbusmessenger.com
“Free Guy” humorous
and visually appealing
The Reel Deal
Dedra Cordle
acquired from pushing
someone in front
of a car, lighting
them on fire, stealing
a kitten, or robbing
a bank.
Wanting to know
what is going on
with this new world, Guy seeks out
MolotovGirl and requests her help. In turn,
he says he can help her with her mission
but she rebuffs his assistance as he is on
the lowest level imaginable. When he asks
what he can do to earn points without
hurting people, she jokingly suggests that
he try nice things and see what happens.
Taking it to heart, Guy stops bank
heists, returns stolen money, and helps
that elderly lady find her kittens. His
efforts do not go unnoticed by the playing
public as he is soon referred to as “Blue
Shirt Guy.” He even gains the attention of
popular vloggers who wonder whether the
game itself has been hacked.
While the public is buzzing about the
non-playable character gone rogue (in the
kind way), behind-the-scenes drama is taking
place at the real-life headquarters of
Soonami, the makers of “Free City” and its
soon-to-be released sequel. Much of it
revolves around the lawsuit between Millie
and “Free City” developer Antwon (Taika
Waititi, leaning heavily into tech bro
stereotypes) and the possible stealing of
data. Though not as visually interesting as
what is happening in the artificial world, it
is still engaging due to the actors involved.
Video games, and even its theatrical
adaptations, are often thought of as cold,
even heartless at times, forms of entertainment
but “Free Guy” is loaded with
warmth amongst its non-stop jokes and
visual gags. Though it does point out the
casual violence of some of the more popular
open-shooter games, it doesn’t get too
preachy about the message. Instead, it
focuses on doing what you can to do good in
the world.
To be honest, I wasn’t expecting much
from “Free Guy” (I thought the trailers
made it look terrible) but I was surprised
by how enjoyable it actually was.
Humorous and visually appealing, it mixes
up the best of video game playing alongside
the best of romantic comedies. It’s a
strange mashup to be sure, but the acting,
directing and script all worked seamlessly
together to create an original and endearingly
fun flick.
