Back-To-School Sales To Hit Record Highs
AFTER several dismal sales months, retailers
around the country have been recording
record high sales figures across the board as
stores have reopened and consumers are
spending again. There has been a tremendous
increase in summer sales numbers and the
upcoming back-to-school selling season is
poised to be a record breaker.
LOW and mid-price points are the most
active products moving the market today.
Sparked by the recent considerable increase
in inflation we are seeing less spending power
which has been creating opportunities for
retailers with value priced merchandise.
Popular priced gift and home stores have also
been generating great profits as consumers
THIS month back-to-school sales are in full have been spending an extraordinary

Gap Joins Forces With Walmart
THERE have been so many changes in the retail industry over the last year, some of it terrible
with store closings and other happenings that would have been unimaginable years ago. There
has been a lot of consolidation in the industry as well as many unique partnerships that have
recently formed.
Sephora has joined with Kohls to introduce their items to new shoppers while creating more
competition for Ulta stores. Another big change is the clothing brand Gap teaming up with
Walmart, America’s largest retailer, to sell their line of home goods. The Gap-branded home
decor, bedding, tabletop and bath collections will be sold on Walmart’s website. While I had
not thought of Gap as a home brand, apparently they are expanding into that arena and
teaming with Walmart to push forward into the marketplace fast and furious.
A multi-year partnership between the two retailers has been forged and from all accounts
should be a lucrative deal at that. For Walmart it allows them to become more competitive in
the home category through exclusive offerings at accessible prices.
WALMART is not the only retailer as we mentioned Sephora before and also Target earlier this
year launched a limited edition exclusive collection of home decor and pet accessories with
denim brand Levi’s. With people spending more time at home and looking for home furnishings
these are big and productive moves for both companies.
Tuesday Morning Sells Its Dallas Real Estate
SAY what you will about discounters, but I have never quite understood Tuesday Morning.
They do have some good buys but I always found our local store a bit run down and chaotic.
Not withstanding my personal opinion, the chain recently filed for bankruptcy protection to
reorganize its almost 500 locations. Additionally they also took a $110 million loan from a group
of bankers led by JP Morgan.
THE Dallas based retailers plan includes the sale of its local real estate, a new bank loan and
a path for how it will emerge as a publicly-traded company when it exits the bankruptcy.
THE company sold its North Dallas headquarters and warehouse facilities for $60 million o
a Miami based investment firm and the cash will allow Tuesday Morning to pay off its vendors.
THEY will then lease back the buildings, the headquarters for 10 years and the warehouse for
an initial 2.5 years followed by a one year extension.
THE retailer of home furnishings and gifts also entered into a new $110 million credit agreement
with a group of banks.
TUESDAY Morning expects to raise $40 million as it issues rights to purchase shares that
have continued to trade since its bankruptcy filing. It is truly quite rare for a company to exit
bankruptcy with publicly-traded shares, but nonetheless this is the plan. Around 200 stores will
be closed and after bankruptcy they are expected to continue with about 500 units.

This written document should serve as your
business handbook, a guide to what you want
your store to become, and how to get there. It
should be so thorough, so comprehensive, that
you can turn to it repeatedly for an update on
your progress, advice on keeping the business
on track, and the inspiration to forge ahead.
Let your business plan take whatever form
you’re most comfortable with. You may confine
the plan to the pages of a notebook, or to scraps
of paper loosely organized in a file folder. Some
will prefer a detailed organizational chart, with
a time line of activities and detailed cost analysis.
Computer users may favor a typeset booklet
produced with desktop publishing software,
complete with supportive charts and graphs.
Whatever form your plan takes, it’s critical that
it be a written document you can return to, to
refresh your thoughts or revise your strategy.
But remember you may want to share the document,
or portions of it, with outsiders as you
start and grow your business.
The topics you’ll need to address are: your
store’s mission; your qualifications and retail
strategy; your store’s legal form; a budget detailing
start-up expenses, operating costs, and
capital needs; projections of income and profitability;
your financial resources and outside
sources of financing.

The foundation of any store is the philosophy
underlying it. That philosophy defines a mission
for the store, why it exists and whom it
serves. Every entrepreneur has professional
and personal reasons for going into business.
Defining that mission allows you to focus your
efforts as you put your philosophy into action,
working for those goals.
For the owner of a tool specialty store, the mission
statement might read like this: “The Tool
Shed will carry every type of carpentry tool,
with a low-price guarantee, to serve the growing
ranks of woodworking hobbyists. Our services
will include tool repairs, educational
classes for all skill levels, and custom-built reproductions
of antique furniture. This will be
an opportunity to put my years of carpentry experience
to work as I realize my lifelong dream

SOLE PROPRIETORSHIPS
KEEP THINGS SIMPLE
The simplest form of business structure, the
sole proprietorship establishes you and your
company as a single entity. Your income and
the company’s profits are one and the same.
You report your profit, after allowable business
deductions, as income to the Internal Revenue
Service on your personal tax form, and pay the

Simple Partnerships Are Just
Combined Sole Proprietorships
In its most basic form, a simple partnership operates
like a sole proprietorship with two or
more people involved. Each shares equally in
the profits, reports it as income, and pays the
appropriate taxes. And each is held fully liable
for any claims against the business to collect
damages or debts. If you select such a structure,
it’s in your best interest to have a written document
defining the agreement and extent of involvement
for all partners.

The corporation is usually a more savvy way
for you to structure your business than a sole

weathers slack periods with belt
tightening, awaiting the promise of better days
ahead. For the underfunded fledgling retailer,
the belt is already as tight as it gets. Any efforts
to cut costs undercuts the store’s chances for
success.
Starting a store is an expensive gamble on the
future. In the building phase of the business –
the period when the store isn’t yet self-supporting

For the business of selling you’ll need at least
one cash register, possibly a delivery truck,
store bags and other packaging, and personalized
signs for the inside and outside of the
store. You may also want a music or video system
to create excitement on the sales floor.
STOCKING THE SHELVES
WITH INVENTORY
You can’t sell from empty shelves and need to
fill the store. Some suppliers may be willing to
help finance your order; assume fro now none
will. What do your competitors offer, and how
do you plan on responding? Go back to your
supplier contacts and ask each for advice on
opening-day inventory. Keep in mind your
need to open with as broad a selection of merchandise
as possible. Stress your desire to be
conservative financially, yet to offer full service
to your customers. Take the supplier estimates
and run them by your retailing contacts to minimize
any inflated salesmanship.
LINING UP YOUR STAFF
If you plan on hiring staff, you’ll probably need
them at least two weeks before the store opens.
Factor in the cost of their salaries, any benefits,
payroll taxes, and the fees incurred during the
hiring process. Also include the cost of any
training you deem necessary to enable you or

total operating budget this first year to get the

how much money you’ll
need to keep your business
afloat for a year. You
could also view it as how
much income the store
will need to generate the first year in order to
carry it to a second year. At this early juncture,
that’s a foolish way to look at it. All businesses
require a certain period to grow and develop
before they can generate revenue at full potential.
There’s always an exception to the rule, but
don’t plan on being the lucky one. To rely on
your store producing enough income to cover
monthly expenses from day one amounts to
setting yourself up for disaster. Better to treat
the tally as a reference figure for the amount of
funding you’ll need to get the store through
that critical first year. Consider the cost projections
as indicative of the amount of funding
sales must generate to carry the business
through its typical yearly sales cycle. The first
year for any store is one in which the business
grows toward its full capacity. Your annual projections
represent the sales revenue and business
needs to generate under ideal conditions.
During the first year, use them as a gauge for
measuring the store’s performance against
your expectations. In twelve months you’ll
sample the entire sales cycle and know if your
concept has real merit and appeal.

As part of your business plan, your accountant
can take these numbers and work up an annual
expense budget for your business. The budget
entails much more than dividing your total expenses
for the first year by 12, and using that
figure as your average monthly expenses.
There are other expenses not directly reflected
in the physical operation of the store, such as
interest payments on any debts you assume to
finance your business. And your expenses
should grow as your as your business expands.
An accountant with retail experience should be
able to tell you what to expect in terms of escalating
costs and how it
will impact sales. His
expertise should also
help you project the
store’s profitability as
you look ahead.
Projecting income, based on your sales expectations,
poses the trickiest aspect of the store’s
budget. In some retail categories market research
exists to demonstrate the profitability of
average retailers, based on store size and the
amount of time in business. Your accountant
may also have experience with a store similar
to yours. But there’s no typical store; your location,
store concept, and you are all unique.
Until you’ve been in business for at least a year,
any projections you make are, at best, guesses.
Be conservative in any assumptions you make
about sales when starting out, but not overly
conservative.
It’s safe to assume the store will begin
covering its expenses within the first year,
a year and a half at the outset,
or the store concept is flawed.
