- JUST RIDE. 

After a year of uncertainty and 

trepidation, from everyone at 

Bombtrack, we hope you remain safe 

and enjoy life spent on two wheels. Our 

world’s shrunk during the pandemic, 

which felt daunting at first, but 

revealed how we can still satisfy our 

urge to explore with adventures closer 

to home. 

Now that we can venture further 

afield, we are excited to share exciting 

highlights from the past year, as well as 

our exciting range of gravel-shredding, 

kilometre-munching, podium-placing 

bikes for 2022. 

Our very own Sofiane Sehili won the 

2021 Silk Road Mountain Race in 

less than eight days and 15 hours, an 

impressive feat considering the 1.858 

kilometres he had to traverse in arduous 

conditions along the ancient trade 

route. His live updates throughout 

the race were a thrill to follow, and 

his cheerful spirit was a constant 

inspiration. 

We welcomed Nancy Akinyi to the 

family, who marked her introduction by 

winning the Migration Gravel Race in 

Kenya, winning all but one stage of the 

5-stage-long event. She’s determined to 

promote women’s cycling in East Africa, 

and we’ll support her every pedal stroke 

of the journey. 

The Veneto Trail, after a one-year 

hiatus, I was booked in again for 2021. 

We caught up with event organiser 

Andrea Securo to speak about the route 

and the stunning landscape hidden 

in the shadows of the Dolomites in 

Northern Italy. Keep reading to find out 

more about Andrea’s spectacular event.

Our Arise range is made up of versatile, low-maintenance steel 

frames with simple geometry, meaning these bikes can handle 

whatever you decide to ride over. 650B or 700C size-matched 

wheels with updated sliding dropouts keep driving consistent,

you a racier feel over its flatbar brethren, the Arise Geared. A Microshift Advent X clutched rear derailleur, and 1x drive train keeps

Andrea Securo and the 

Veneto Trail 

Unlike constant, reliable tarmac, trails 

can shift with the seasons. Torrential 

rain can force them to meander along 

new paths, or strong winds can fell 

trees, leaving you no choice but to 

reroute and find a new way. 

Andrea Securo, organiser of the 

Veneto Trail – an unsupported, offroad 

cycling event in Northern Italy – 

revels in these shifting landscapes. We 

caught up with him ahead of the event 

recommencing in June 2022, where he 

discussed the power of nature, exposing 

hidden beauty under the slopes of the 

Dolomites and his constant surprise at 

how determined cyclists can be. 

Can you tell us a little about the 

event? 

“The Veneto Trail – now in its 

seventh edition – is an annual offroad 

self-supported event across the 

Dolomites. It starts and finishes in 

Cittadella, my home town, and is a 

superb place for off-road adventures. 

It didn’t initially head through the 

Dolomites, but we like to scout 

new routes and trails, so we change 

the course every year – and that’s 

some of the best times we have; 

recreating it. We often find new 

places we’ve never been to, and we’re 

locals! My father, Antonio, helps out 

immeasurably by scouting the region 

by bike. A lot of the route’s charm 

and its sense of adventure is largely 

thanks to him.” 

How do people usually tackle such 

arduous parkours? 

“Some people consider the event a 

race – which it’s not, no matter how 

much we try to convince them! The 

true spirit of the event is to take your 

time and complete the course so that 

you can enjoy the riding and, most 

importantly, the landscape.” 

What conditions can the riders expect? 

“They will experience a very diverse 

course from flat, habitable areas to the 

pre-Alps, which tourists often overlook 

because the Dolomites overshadow 

them, so these areas are full of 

surprises. Then, of course, come the 

Dolomites themselves. 

“There’s so much of the landscape we 

want to show everybody, but due to the 

changeable conditions in the region, 

from heavy rain to landslides and 

fallen trees, we need to avoid them as 

best we can. We’ve already had lots of 

positive feedback on the course this 

year and how we’ve reduced the amount 

of tarmac. 

“One year, we had huge problems when 

we suffered from a massive storm, 

which quite literally changed the 

course – trails simply disappeared. 

Thousands of trees had fallen over 

because of the weather. What’s more, 

heavy snow the following winter altered 

the landscape even 

further, meaning 

when we travelled 

back to the region 

to assess the change, 

we had to go back to 

the drawing board 

and rewrite the 

route entirely from 

scratch. The year 

after that, we finally 

could use the plans 

we had from the 

year before, but then 

the pandemic broke 

out. We can finally 

use that course in 

2022.” 

Is it a route better 

suited for mountain 

bikes because of the 

landscape? 

“Interestingly, that’s 

what I initially 

thought. Last year, 

many people were 

on gravel bikes, 

and they told me it’s not as difficult 

as I’d feared – you just need to hike 

a bike more often than someone on a 

mountain bike. But they made so much 

time back on the flatter sections that 

the finishing times are very similar.” 

You mentioned earlier the small-scale 

spirit of the event. How do you maintain 

it? 

‘We have around 220 participants, 

and it grows with each iteration. 

But we don’t want participation to 

increase too much or too fast – it’s 

not our objective. We want to keep 

numbers manageable so we can say hi 

to everyone at the starting line and 

welcome them back at the finish. 

“Even if we merely inspire people to 

visit Veneto and expose its beauty 

and appeal to cyclists, that’s our goal. 

That’s important to us. We just want to 

show people what Northern Italy has to 

offer and what else lies hidden beneath 

the Dolomites that can appeal to the 

adventurous cyclist.”

For intrepid explorers, the Beyond Junior is a bike built specifically for youngsters. Geometry from its elder siblings scaled-down plus 

24-inch wheels, a nimble aluminium frame, and flared bars keep the bike manageable for smaller riders. Being smaller doesn’t mean

Federico Cabrera and his 

photography project in 

South America 

A camera is a powerful machine. It can 

freeze a moment in time and turn it 

into a material object: a photograph. 

Nowadays, taking a picture is 

instantaneous, and people yearn to have 

their images taken. But what if the 

subject doesn’t give their permission? 

Concerned with this dilemma, Federico 

Cabrera decided to swap a career in 

foreign trade for photography and 

bikepack across South America to 

pursue his newfound love of the art 

form and see if he could readdress the 

imbalance between the camera and its 

subject. Their Only Portrait is the 

rolling result of his ongoing, six-yearlong 

project. 

How did your project get started? 

“It’s a personal project I started in 

2014. I had a career in foreign trade 

but by the time I was 30 years old, I 

was burned out and realised I didn’t 

want to spend the rest of my life in 

a small office in front of a screen – 

no matter how much money I made. 

So I quit after 15 years and decided 

to travel across South America. I 

took up photography as a hobby when 

working full-time, but it turned into 

my full-time career after enrolling at 

photography school. It became my life, 

and I was determined to put my craft 

to good use.” 

What inspired the project? 

“A small but unfortunate fire at my 

house made me realise that my printed 

and digital photographs are the 

second most valuable things to me, 

after my family – which includes my 

dogs! Later, I visited Peru with my 

photography equipment, and I would 

become distraught seeing tourists 

take photos of locals without asking 

for permission. It was frustrating to 

witness and gave photographers a lousy 

reputation. I decided to spend more 

time with the locals, and they told me 

that they often do not even own an 

image of themselves or their family, 

despite having their photograph taken 

by strangers, sometimes hundreds of 

times a day.” 

How did your f irst trip plan out? 

When I finished high school in the 

1990s, I did my first long bicycle trip, 

exploring Patagonia for two months. 

After that, I started working my 

desk job, and with only two weeks of 

vacation time per year, I replaced the 

bike with a car then later a 4x4. By 

experience, I knew that whenever I 

reached a small village with a big 

vehicle, I would be treated as a fancy 

tourist, but I still needed something 

to get me and all my gear to those 

remote villages. I did some research 

and noticed others strapping dry 

bags to mountain bikes, using this 

set up to explore remote locations – 

and suddenly cycling was back in my 

life.” 

Did you need to alter your approach? 

“Bike packing was uncommon in 

South America, back in 2015. I was 

riding my old dirt-jumper with DIY 

bikepacking bags, kindly made by my 

grandmother, and a 35-litre backpack 

on the Inca Trail above 13,000ft… 

and I haven't stopped since then. 

Did the swap from four to two wheels 

have an effect? 

“Once I started cycling to them, 

my reception was far different. 

The bicycle was an equaliser. 

People in small villages still ride 

bikes as a means of transport. 

They appreciate the effort you 

make if you cycle, considering 

the weather and altitudes you can 

experience in South America.” 

Once you could speak to more 

people, what did you notice? 

“By the time I reached the 

north, it was clear how happy 

my photographs had made the 

people I had met, but some didn’t 

have electricity or clean drinking 

water. So on my next trip, along 

with my camera equipment, I’d 

start taking water filters and 

solar lights. 

“I always travel alone, which seems 

to make people naturally curious as 

to what I’m doing – it’s not every day 

you see someone cycling for pleasure 

through those remote locations. So I 

explain what I’m doing there, which 

usually leads to us talking about their 

family. 

“Sometimes they have photos to share, 

but the youngest children are often 

missing from the picture. To avoid 

making them feel uncomfortable, I’d 

offer them a printed family portrait, 

a water filter, a solar lamp or both in 

exchange for some water or a place to 

pitch my tent for the night. I wouldn’t 

need either of these things more often 

than most, but I used them to frame my 

gesture as an exchange of gratitude. I 

never forced it, though – if I could tell 

they might be uncomfortable with me 

having their portrait, I deleted it from 

my camera immediately once I’d printed 

it and given it to them. 

The act becomes reciprocal by framing 

their newly printed family portrait 

and my solar lamp or water filter as a 

means of thanks. We were as equal as 

the humble bicycles we ride.” 

Do you hope your project might affect 

others visiting these places? 

“My project is modest, but it shows 

that even the slightest gesture can 

make a massive difference to someone’s 

life, to at least show it’s possible. If 

I can inspire other visitors to these 

countries and do something similar – 

no matter how small it is – they can 

make a difference in somebody’s quality 

of life.”
