After a year of uncertainty and<br />

trepidation, from everyone at<br />

<strong>Bombtrack</strong>, we hope you remain safe<br />

and enjoy life spent on two wheels. Our<br />

world’s shrunk during the pandemic,<br />

which felt daunting at first, but<br />

revealed how we can still satisfy our<br />

urge to explore with adventures closer<br />

to home.<br />

Now that we can venture further<br />

afield, we are excited to share exciting<br />

highlights from the past year, as well as<br />

our exciting range of gravel-shredding,<br />

kilometre-munching, podium-placing<br />

bikes for <strong>2022</strong>.<br />

Our very own Sofiane Sehili won the<br />

2021 Silk Road Mountain Race in<br />

less than eight days and 15 hours, an<br />

impressive feat considering the 1.858<br />

kilometres he had to traverse in arduous<br />

conditions along the ancient trade<br />

route. His live updates throughout<br />

the race were a thrill to follow, and<br />

his cheerful spirit was a constant<br />

inspiration.<br />

We welcomed Nancy Akinyi to the<br />

family, who marked her introduction by<br />

winning the Migration Gravel Race in<br />

Kenya, winning all but one stage of the<br />

5-stage-long event. She’s determined to<br />

promote women’s cycling in East Africa,<br />

and we’ll support her every pedal stroke<br />

of the journey.<br />

The Veneto Trail, after a one-year<br />

hiatus, I was booked in again for 2021.<br />

We caught up with event organiser<br />

Andrea Securo to speak about the route<br />

and the stunning landscape hidden<br />

in the shadows of the Dolomites in<br />

Northern Italy. Keep reading to find out<br />

Our Arise range is made up of versatile, low-maintenance steel<br />

frames with simple geometry, meaning these bikes can handle<br />

whatever you decide to ride over. 650B or 700C size-matched<br />

wheels with updated sliding dropouts keep driving consistent,<br />

and along with a single-speed drivetrain, you will solve roadside<br />

mechanicals in a flash. A 9-speed cassette provides reprieve<br />

Shifting<br />

Unlike constant, reliable tarmac, trails<br />

can shift with the seasons. Torrential<br />

rain can force them to meander along<br />

new paths, or strong winds can fell<br />

trees, leaving you no choice but to<br />

reroute and find a new way.<br />

Andrea Securo, organiser of the<br />

Veneto Trail – an unsupported, offroad<br />

cycling event in Northern Italy –<br />

revels in these shifting landscapes. We<br />

caught up with him ahead of the event<br />

recommencing in June <strong>2022</strong>, where he<br />

discussed the power of nature, exposing<br />

hidden beauty under the slopes of the<br />

Dolomites and his constant surprise at<br />

how determined cyclists can be.<br />

Can you tell us a little about the<br />

event?<br />

“The Veneto Trail – now in its<br />

seventh edition – is an annual offroad<br />

self-supported event across the<br />

Dolomites. It starts and finishes in<br />

Cittadella, my home town, and is a<br />

superb place for off-road adventures.<br />

It didn’t initially head through the<br />

Dolomites, but we like to scout<br />

new routes and trails, so we change<br />

the course every year – and that’s<br />

some of the best times we have;<br />

recreating it. We often find new<br />

places we’ve never been to, and we’re<br />

locals! My father, Antonio, helps out<br />

immeasurably by scouting the region<br />

by bike. A lot of the route’s charm<br />

and its sense of adventure is largely<br />

thanks to him.”<br />

How do people usually tackle such<br />

arduous parkours?<br />

“Some people consider the event a<br />

race – which it’s not, no matter how<br />

much we try to convince them! The<br />

true spirit of the event is to take your<br />

time and complete the course so that<br />

you can enjoy the riding and, most<br />

importantly, the landscape.”<br />

What conditions can the riders expect?<br />

“They will experience a very diverse<br />

course from flat, habitable areas to the<br />

pre-Alps, which tourists often overlook<br />

because the Dolomites overshadow<br />

them, so these areas are full of<br />

surprises. Then, of course, come the<br />

Dolomites themselves.<br />

“There’s so much of the landscape we<br />

want to show everybody, but due to the<br />

changeable conditions in the region,<br />

from heavy rain to landslides and<br />

fallen trees, we need to avoid them as<br />

best we can. We’ve already had lots of<br />

positive feedback on the course this<br />

year and how we’ve reduced the amount<br />

of tarmac.<br />

“One year, we had huge problems when<br />

we suffered from a massive storm,<br />

which quite literally changed the<br />

course – trails simply disappeared.<br />

Thousands of trees had fallen over<br />

because of the weather. What’s more,<br />

heavy snow the following winter altered<br />

the landscape even<br />

further, meaning<br />

when we travelled<br />

back to the region<br />

to assess the change,<br />

we had to go back to<br />

the drawing board<br />

and rewrite the<br />

route entirely from<br />

scratch. The year<br />

after that, we finally<br />

could use the plans<br />

we had from the<br />

year before, but then<br />

the pandemic broke<br />

out. We can finally<br />

use that course in<br />

<strong>2022</strong>.”<br />

Is it a route better<br />

suited for mountain<br />

bikes because of the<br />

landscape?<br />

“Interestingly, that’s<br />

what I initially<br />

thought. Last year,<br />

many people were<br />

on gravel bikes,<br />

and they told me it’s not as difficult<br />

as I’d feared – you just need to hike<br />

a bike more often than someone on a<br />

mountain bike. But they made so much<br />

numbers manageable so we can say hi<br />

to everyone at the starting line and<br />

welcome them back at the finish.<br />

For intrepid explorers, the Beyond Junior is a bike built specifically for youngsters. Geometry from its elder siblings scaled-down plus<br />

Federico Cabrera and his<br />

photography project in<br />

South America<br />

A camera is a powerful machine. It can<br />

freeze a moment in time and turn it<br />

into a material object: a photograph.<br />

Nowadays, taking a picture is<br />

instantaneous, and people yearn to have<br />

their images taken. But what if the<br />

subject doesn’t give their permission?<br />

Concerned with this dilemma, Federico<br />

Cabrera decided to swap a career in<br />

foreign trade for photography and<br />

bikepack across South America to<br />

pursue his newfound love of the art<br />

form and see if he could readdress the<br />

imbalance between the camera and its<br />

subject. Their Only Portrait is the<br />

rolling result of his ongoing, six-yearlong<br />

project.<br />

How did your project get started?<br />

“It’s a personal project I started in<br />

2014. I had a career in foreign trade<br />

but by the time I was 30 years old, I<br />

was burned out and realised I didn’t<br />

want to spend the rest of my life in<br />

a small office in front of a screen –<br />

no matter how much money I made.<br />

So I quit after 15 years and decided<br />

to travel across South America. I<br />

took up photography as a hobby when<br />

working full-time, but it turned into<br />

my full-time career after enrolling at<br />

photography school. It became my life,<br />

and I was determined to put my craft<br />

to good use.”<br />

What inspired the project?<br />

“A small but unfortunate fire at my<br />

house made me realise that my printed<br />

and digital photographs are the<br />

second most valuable things to me,<br />

after my family – which includes my<br />

dogs! Later, I visited Peru with my<br />

photography equipment, and I would<br />

become distraught seeing tourists<br />

take photos of locals without asking<br />

for permission. It was frustrating to<br />

witness and gave photographers a lousy<br />

reputation. I decided to spend more<br />

time with the locals, and they told me<br />

that they often do not even own an<br />

image of themselves or their family,<br />

despite having their photograph taken<br />

by strangers, sometimes hundreds of<br />

times a day.”<br />

How did your f irst trip plan out?<br />

When I finished high school in the<br />

1990s, I did my first long bicycle trip,<br />

exploring Patagonia for two months.<br />

After that, I started working my<br />

desk job, and with only two weeks of<br />

vacation time per year, I replaced the<br />

bike with a car then later a 4x4. By<br />

experience, I knew that whenever I<br />

reached a small village with a big<br />

vehicle, I would be treated as a fancy<br />

tourist, but I still needed something<br />

to get me and all my gear to those<br />

remote villages. I did some research<br />

and noticed others strapping dry<br />

bags to mountain bikes, using this<br />

set up to explore remote locations –<br />

and suddenly cycling was back in my<br />

life.”<br />

Did you need to alter your approach?<br />

“Bike packing was uncommon in<br />

South America, back in 2015. I was<br />

riding my old dirt-jumper with DIY<br />

bikepacking bags, kindly made by my<br />

grandmother, and a 35-litre backpack<br />

on the Inca Trail above 13,000ft…<br />

and I haven't stopped since then.<br />

Did the swap from four to two wheels<br />

have an effect?<br />

“Once I started cycling to them,<br />

my reception was far different.<br />

The bicycle was an equaliser.<br />

People in small villages still ride<br />

bikes as a means of transport.<br />

They appreciate the effort you<br />

make if you cycle, considering<br />

the weather and altitudes you can<br />

experience in South America.”<br />

Once you could speak to more<br />

people, what did you notice?<br />

“By the time I reached the<br />

north, it was clear how happy<br />

my photographs had made the<br />

people I had met, but some didn’t<br />

have electricity or clean drinking<br />

water. So on my next trip, along<br />

with my camera equipment, I’d<br />

start taking water filters and<br />

solar lights.<br />

“I always travel alone, which seems<br />

to make people naturally curious as<br />

to what I’m doing – it’s not every day<br />

you see someone cycling for pleasure<br />

through those remote locations. So I<br />

explain what I’m doing there, which<br />

usually leads to us talking about their<br />

family.<br />

“Sometimes they have photos to share,<br />

but the youngest children are often<br />

missing from the picture. To avoid<br />

making them feel uncomfortable, I’d<br />

offer them a printed family portrait,<br />

a water filter, a solar lamp or both in<br />

exchange for some water or a place to<br />

pitch my tent for the night. I wouldn’t<br />

need either of these things more often<br />

than most, but I used them to frame my<br />

gesture as an exchange of gratitude. I<br />

never forced it, though – if I could tell<br />

they might be uncomfortable with me<br />

having their portrait, I deleted it from<br />

my camera immediately once I’d printed<br />

it and given it to them.<br />

The act becomes reciprocal by framing<br />

their newly printed family portrait<br />

and my solar lamp or water filter as a<br />

means of thanks. We were as equal as<br />

the humble bicycles we ride.”<br />

Do you hope your project might affect<br />

others visiting these places?<br />

“My project is modest, but it shows<br />

that even the slightest gesture can<br />

make a massive difference to someone’s<br />

life, to at least show it’s possible. If<br />

I can inspire other visitors to these<br />

countries and do something similar –<br />

no matter how small it is – they can<br />

make a difference in somebody’s quality<br />

of life.”<br />
