GOOD NEIGHBOR DAY
SEPTEMBER 28 TH
Neighbors are an integral part of our social lives - whether at home or at
work. Good Neighbor Day on September 28 th is an annual holiday that
promotes neighborliness and niceness towards people who surround us.
How to Celebrate?
• Be nice to your neighbor - at home or elsewhere.
• If you don’t know your neighbors well, maybe today is your chance to go
up to them and strike up a conversation.
• Bake some goodies and share them with your neighbors. Bring them to
work for your work neighbors.
• Invite your neighbors to your home for a meal.
Did You Know…
…that the word neighbor comes from the Old English word neahgebur,
where neah means near and gebur means inhabitant?
On September 28 th , National Good Neighbor Day is celebrated. This
annual holiday was first proclaimed by President Jimmy Carter in 1978.
Mrs. Becky Mattson from Lakeside, Montana came up with the idea of
a national holiday recognizing the importance of good neighbors in
1971. In 1978, U.S. President Jimmy Carter announced the creation of a
national day aimed at raising public awareness that good neighbors help
achieve human understanding and build strong, thriving communities.
Since then, National Good Neighbor Day has been acknowledged by
various levels of government and is celebrated every year. The holiday
was originally celebrated on the fourth Sunday in September, but in
2003 its date was changed to September 28 th . On this day, Nextdoor.
com, a social network for neighborhoods, announces the recipients of
Nextdoor’s Good Neighbor Award. Everyone can nominate a neighbor or
a group of neighbors by writing a short story about what they have done
to help their local community and make it a better place. National Good
Neighbor Day is the perfect occasion to honor the people who make
significant contributions to creating safer neighborhoods and stronger
communities across the United States.

NATIONAL GRANDPARENTS
DAY SEPTEMBER 12TH
Each year on the Sunday following Labor Day, grandchildren across the
country honor their grandparents. There is a special bond that can only
be shared between grandchildren and their grandparents. Grandparents
are full of hugs and kisses, family history, wisdom, patience, love
and guidance. National Grandparents Day gives grandchildren the
opportunity to show love and appreciation to their grandparents.
National Grandparents Day has its very own song. The National
Grandparents Day Council of Chula Vista, California announced in 2004
that A Song for Grandma and Grandpa by Johnny Prill would be the official
song of the United States National Grandparents Day holiday. The Council
presented Prill with the National Songwriter’s Award in recognition of his
highly popular composition A Song for Grandma and Grandpa.
The forget-me-not is the official flower for National Grandparents Day.
National Grandparents Day is expected to grow in significance over
the next decade and beyond as the number of grandparents in the
United States rises from 65 million in 2011 to 80 million in 2020 as a
result of the baby boom. Show your appreciation for everything your
grandparents have done for you.

Ingredients
4 cups shredded cabbage*
1 cup shredded carrots (2 medium)*
¼ cup thinly sliced green onions (2)
½ cup mayonnaise
2 tablespoons sugar
1 tablespoon lemon juice
¼ teaspoon salt
¼ teaspoon ground white pepper
6 purchased or homemade corn muffins
¼ cup butter, melted
14 ounces frozen cooked, breaded chicken breast fillets,
prepared according to package directions
1 15.5-22 ounce can barbecue beans
1 ½ cups chopped green, yellow, and/or red tomatoes (2
large)
¾ cup bottled ranch salad dressing
* If desired, substitute 5 cups packaged shredded cabbage with
carrot (coleslaw mix) for cabbage and carrots.
Directions
Step 1: For slaw, in a large bowl combine cabbage, carrots,
and green onions; toss to mix. In a small bowl stir together
mayonnaise, sugar, lemon juice, salt, and pepper. Add dressing
to cabbage mixture, tossing to combine. Cover and chill for 2
hours, stirring occasionally.
Step 2: Meanwhile, preheat oven to 375°F. Cut corn muffins into
1-inch cubes. Place cubes in a large shallow baking pan; drizzle
with melted butter, tossing to coat. Bake for 16 to 18 minutes or
until crisp, stirring twice. Set aside.
Step 3: Transfer slaw mixture to an 8- to 10-cup clear glass bowl.
Cut chicken into strips. Arrange chicken strips evenly over slaw.
Spoon beans over chicken pieces, spreading evenly. Sprinkle
corn muffin cubes over beans. Top with tomatoes. If desired,
cover and chill for up to 6 hours.
Step 4: Just before serving, spoon dressing over all.
