Nelson’s Cold War Bunker
Congratulations to Touchstones Nelson Museum of Art and
History for their recent recognition and honour from the BC
Heritage Awards.
The Cold War Bunker project began in 2013 when the board
of directors of Touchstones Nelson Museum “rediscovered”
the cold war bunker. It was determined that the history collection
of Nelson and Area, managed by the museum, could
be moved into the bunker’s former dormitory rooms, thus
ensuring that the collection would remain more accessible and
safely housed for posterity.
The exhibition, programming space, and public interactive
components involve a collaboratively researched and designed
exhibition comprising of 5 didactic panels with archival photographs,
text, and documents. In addition to collections items
from the museum, there are also documentary film and interactive
programming elements, including a QR-code activated
touch-screen display that explores the lack of social justice,
equity and inclusion that would have existed in the bunker
had it been activated during the cold-war.
Western Pacific Marine has been made aware that BCIT is currently
offering a 17-week Bridge Watch Rating Enhanced Program that is
supported by Transport Canada. This course is being offered free for
women and Indigenous learners and will run for approximately one
year. The program will be limited to 16 students per year, so, if you are
interested in pursuing a career at sea, this may be an opportunity for
those eligible candidates.
For those interested, it is recommended that you apply expeditiously as
limited seats are available. Due to the popularity of the Bridge Watch
Program only completed applications with required documentation
will be considered by BCIT.
Opportunities from this program can include work in a variety of different
sectors such as: ferries, ecotourism, commercial fishing, tug boats,
sport fishing, travel and other recreational marine guiding roles.
Western Pacific Marine is a Company committed to diversity and is
regularly recruiting for Bridge Watch certified personnel. If you are
interested in this opportunity, you are encouraged to search the link
indicated and read more about this program on-line at
https://www.bcit.ca/study/programs/2933acert
Hope methods, dogs
are trained to be certified
assistance dogs
in the areas of autism,
psychological, vision,
mobility, and stability
assistance. Maddi
continues to work
with Leash of Hope as a junior trainer.
To begin, Maddi reached out through
the Leash of Hope website, and shortly
after met the two owners who started
her training sessions. She learned what
stages and tests
the dogs would
have to progress
through to
become certified
assistance dogs
and what her role
as a junior trainer
would be in this
process. Most
dogs are rescue
dogs. Maddi’s
first pup, Valor,
and current pup,
Hamlet, are both rescue
dogs from Texas.
Each level of training
the dogs accomplish
moves them
closer to being placed
with a person in need.
Level one focuses on
the basics where the
dog learns to respond
to commands. As
they pass to level two,
the dog learns specific
skills. In level
three, the dog specializes
in a class of assistance: bigger
dogs are generally mobility and stability
dogs like guide dogs. Under Maddi’s
coaching, her first dog moved into level
three, and he is now being tested as a
guide dog. Maddi’s current pup, under
her training, has just passed level two
testing.
Maddi hopes this can be an opportunity
to bring awareness and education
to the community about assistance/service
dogs and the need for supporting
important organizations like Leash of
Hope.
Return to school recovery plan
Yesterday Education Minister Jennifer Whiteside and Dr.
Bonnie Henry announced that K-12 students will return to
school for full time, in-person instruction in September. September
2021 will not be as close to near normal as we all had
hoped, but it’s a different September than 12 months ago. While
we have the Delta variant circulating, we also have vaccines.
Of children ages 12-17, 72% have received their first dose/
shot and 57% have received both shots/doses and are fully vaccinated.
This number rises daily and BCCDC will be reporting
on this in their updates before school begins. Read the media
release, watch the recorded announcement and/or reference
the Safe School website.
There are 4 key documents parents/guardians should read/
review:
1) Return to School Recovery Plan (Please note there are no
stages in the K-12 plan);
2) Health & Safety Guidelines;
3) BCCDC Guidance; and
4) Protocols for Administrators which includes info on
exposures, notices, communication.
To ensure a healthy and safe return to school, updates have
been made to the COVID-19 Communicable Disease Guidelines
(Health & Safety) for K-12 Settings, in alignment with
the BCCDC COVID-19 Public Health Communicable Disease
Guidance for K-12 Schools (documents noted above),
including the authority for Medical Health Officers (MHO) to
introduce additional regional measures specific to individual
schools or school districts where community transmission
rates are higher. Cohorts and strict physical distancing is no
longer required.
School districts must ensure heating, ventilation and air
conditioning (HVAC) systems are designed, operated and
maintained to Occupational Health and Safety and Work-
SafeBC standards. General cleaning of schools, cleaning and
disinfecting of frequently touched surfaces will be conducted
at least once in every 24-hour period and when visibly dirty.
Masks in K - 12
Masks will continue to be required in all indoor spaces
(including desks) for all K-12 staff, visitors (including parents
and PACs) and students in Grades 4 to 12 in schools and on
school buses.
BC Transit:
Free for kids now!
As of September 1, 2021, children 12 and under will be able
to “Get on Board” any BC Transit or TransLink service for free
as part of the provincial government’s commitment to efficient,
reliable and affordable transit for families.
Anyone who typically buys fares or monthly bus passes for
children 12 and under will no longer need to do so. “We are
excited to launch a program that will benefit parents and caregivers
and make life more affordable for families across BC,”
said Rob Fleming, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure.
“As we rebuild transit systems and ridership after the pandemic,
this new program will encourage people to get onboard
with the potential to save families hundreds of dollars every
year.”
Depending on the mode of public transit and service provider
(TransLink or BC Transit), there are slight differences in
the program’s initial rollout. For West Kootenay residents who
rely on BC Transit buses, this is what’s new:
• Unaccompanied children aged six to 12 will be able to
ride buses and HandyDART for free, without requiring a
fare product or identification.
• BC Transit will require children aged five and under to
be accompanied
by a
person 12
or older.
While travel
for children 12
and under will
be free, parents/
guardians remain
responsible for
providing adequate
provisions
for the safety
and care of their
children whenever
travelling on
transit, including
when travelling
unaccompanied
and determining
if their children
may take transit
unaccompanied.
Kootenay Lake local
conservation fund accepting
2022 proposals
The Kootenay Conservation Program (KCP), on behalf of
the Regional District of Central Kootenay (RDCK), is now
accepting proposals for the Kootenay Lake Local Conservation
Fund (KLLCF).
The KLLCF was established by the RDCK in 2014 by referendum.
Property owners in Electoral Areas A, D and E pay a
parcel tax of $15 per parcel per year towards this dedicated
fund, which provides financial support each year to local projects
that help conserve and restore the area’s prized fish, wildlife,
habitat and water.
KCP, which works in partnership with the RDCK to administer
the KLLCF, is encouraging non-profit organizations and
Indigenous communities operating in the participating areas
to submit their funding proposals for 2022 projects. Community
groups and individuals can partner with an eligible organization
to apply. The deadline for applications is 4:30 p.m. PT
on October 29, 2021. If you have a new project idea, it is highly
recommended that you contact the KCP program manager
prior to submitting an application to discuss your project idea.
Local conservation priorities were identified in a KLLCF
Guidance Document that the RDCK commissioned in 2018.
To learn more about the KLLCF, how to apply, and conservation
priorities from the Guidance Document, please visit
https://kootenayconservation.ca/kootenay-lake-local-conservation-fund/.
For phone or email inquiries, please contact
KCP program manager Juliet Craig at 250-352-2260 or juliet@
A person who cannot tolerate wearing a mask for health or
behavioural reasons
• A person unable to put on or remove a mask without the
assistance of another person
• If the mask is removed temporarily for the purposes of
identifying the person wearing it
• If the mask is removed temporarily to engage in an educational
activity that cannot be performed while wearing
a mask. (for example, playing a wind instrument,
eating or drinking)
• If a person is behind a barrier
• While providing a service to a person with a disability
or diverse ability (for example, a hearing impairment),
where visual cues, facial expressions and/or lip reading/
movements are important
Students in Kindergarten to Grade 3 are encouraged to wear
a mask indoors in schools and on school buses, but are not
required to do so. Mask wearing remains a personal or family/
cont’d on pg 9
New health Measures
Effective as of August 21:
• Masks are mandatory in all indoor public spaces for
people 12 years and older.
• Low-intensity indoor group exercise is permitted to a
maximum 10 people per class. High-intensity indoor
group exercise is not permitted.
• Outdoor group exercise is permitted up to 50 people per
class.
Effective as of August 23:
• Gatherings in vacation rentals are limited to five guests
or one additional household.
• Indoor personal gatherings are limited to ten guests or
one other household.
• Outdoor personal gatherings (e.g. birthday parties,
backyard BBQs, block parties) are limited to no more
than 50 people.
• Organized indoor gatherings (e.g. weddings, funerals,
seated events) are limited to 50 people, and outdoors
gatherings are limited to 100 people, both requiring a
COVID-19 safety plan.
These measures will remain in place until the end of September
and Interior Health experiences lower cases and higher
vaccination rates.
Health Measures... cont’d from pg 6
“While we are beginning to see cases in the central Okanagan
slowly plateau, we are seeing more cases in other areas
of Interior Health,” said Interior Health president and CEO,
Susan Brown. “We are calling on all young adults to get your
vaccine, especially those who work in jobs where you interact
with the public. It is the most effective way to protect yourself
and to reduce transmission in the community.”
Most people are being exposed at social gatherings, work
places or in private households. The delta variant is leading
to faster transmission and more severe outcomes for younger
people. Immunization remains the most effective prevention
against COVID-19.
“The vast majority of our cases are in people who are unimmunized
or partially immunized and in adults between 20-40
years old. For those who haven’t yet gotten their first dose of
the COVID-19 vaccine, please get it now. Getting immunized
will help keep our hospital beds open for treating people with
other illnesses and needing surgery,” said Interior Health medical
health officer, Dr. Rob Parker.
The interval between first and second COVID-19 vaccine
doses has decreased to 28 days for everyone. People can get
vaccinated by dropping into any IH immunization clinic or
by booking an appointment. Pop-up clinics are being added
in communities throughout the region. All clinic locations
and details area available here: https://news.interiorhealth.ca/
news/covid-19-immunization-clinics/,
Testing continues to be available to anyone experiencing
symptoms of COVID-19. People can book an appointment
online or call 1.877.740.7747 between 8 am – 7 pm daily.
How to get vaccinated
People can get their first or second dose of a COVID-19 vaccine
by dropping in to any IH immunization clinic or by making
an appointment.
To make an appointment, register online by visiting the
provincial website at: www.getvaccinated.gov.bc.ca/, call
1‐833‐838‐2323, or visit a Service BC office and then book an
appointment.
clinics and other resources visit:https://news.interiorhealth.ca/
Rapid Response Teams
Six rapid response teams are in place to support K-12 schools
across the province. The teams will work with school districts,
independent schools and health authorities to respond to
COVID-19 exposures in schools. Rapid response teams have representatives
from school and public health staff. The teams will:
• Work with schools, school districts and health authority
staff to review significant school exposure events, make
recommendations and support schools to enhance their
communicable disease plans when needed
• Review school or district COVID-19 communicable
disease plans and related policies
• Support schools with communications to students, staff
and families regarding communicable disease prevention
• Conduct school safety assessments
• Support schools with implementing pandemic recovery
plans, including a focus on mental health and wellbeing
and addressing impacts on learning
Music and Physical Ed
Students can participate in music and physical education
programs, with additional safety measures in place. Masks
aren’t required when doing activities that cannot be performed
while wearing a mask, like playing a wind instrument
or participating in high-intensity physical activity. Students
must continue to wear masks while singing. Shared equipment
will be cleaned and disinfected and students are encouraged to
wash their hands before and after use. Students will be asked
not to share equipment that touches the mouth, like an instrument
mouthpiece or mouthguard, unless cleaned and disinfected
in between uses.
Sports, Clubs and Extracurricular Activities
Activities like sports team practices and games, sports academies
and events can continue. They will follow local, regional
and provincial public health recommendations and orders for
community gatherings and events. Sport and extracurricular
activities should be held outside whenever possible. Students
will be encouraged to wash their hands before and after using
equipment and cover their mouths when coughing or sneezing.
Students will be asked not to share equipment that touches
the mouth unless cleaned and disinfected in between uses.
Masks in Public Spaces
Dr. Henry also announced a Provincial Health Officer
Order reinstating masks in indoor public spaces. This Order
comes into effect
today and will
address mask
wearing in indoor
spaces such as grocery
stores, retail
centres, recreation
centres and offices
where public services
are provided.
More information
will be made available
over the next
few days.
Proof
of
Vaccination
Monday’s
announcement
regarding
the requirement
for proof of vaccination
to access
certain businesses
and events does
NOT apply to K-12
schools (public and
independent) OR
before-and-after
school programs,
as these are covered
by specific guidelines
for school and
child care settings.
The Ministry is
working with public
health officials
to clarify how the
measures will apply to gatherings and events in K-12 schools
attended by parents, families and the public (e.g. theatres, concerts).
More information will be provided on this in the near
future.
Masks mandatory on all
BC Transit buses
Following the guidance of the Provincial Health Officer and
WorkSafeBC, and in alignment with TransLink, BC Transit is
requiring the use of face coverings in BC Transit communities
across the province, effective Wednesday, August 25.
Our ongoing goal is to create a comfortable and safe environment
for all customers and drivers. This includes the mandatory
use of face coverings on buses and at bus stops, unless a
customer meets the exemption criteria.
The remainder of BC Transit’s safety measures, reviewed
by both the Provincial Health Officer and WorkSafe BC, also
remain in place to ensure a safe environment for our employees,
customers and communities. These include:
Would your acreage benefit from soil amendment?
Mercer Celgar is looking for landowners with 2 or more acres within 55 km
that would benefit from using their Celgrow soil amendment. Pastures and
hay fields are good options.
Mercer Celgar will cover the costs of a Qualified Professional performing
soil sampling, obtaining government authorization and delivery costs of Celgrow
soil amendment based on access with a large truck/pup combination.
Acreage should be able to accommodate at least 6 truck/pup loads. The two
major components of Celgrow are individual wood fibres lost from the pulping
process and surplus bacteria from the wastewater biological treatment
facility. Wood fibres enhance soil moisture retention and bacteria are a good
source of soil nutrients. The landowner is responsible for spreading and incorporating
Celgrow into their soil.
Kootenay-Columbia Federal Candidates All Candidates Event
The Nelson and District Chamber of Commerce
and Nelson at its Best are conducting a
public online All-Candidates Election Forum
on Wednesday September 15, 7 – 8:30 pm.
Zoom online platform
The forum, which will happen via Zoom
online, will focus on critical social and
economic issues, with the five candidates
in attendance to express their reasons for
running, what they and their parties are offering
— and of course, to answer questions.
To help set the stage for each issue being
explored with the candidates, there will be a
brief overview contributed by a local expert
working in that aspect of community life.
“These issue inputs from people actively
engaged in making our community stronger
are a great way to let the candidates hear
what is important
to local people, and
where the challenges
lie – and for voters to see and hear how the
candidates think on their feet,” says George
Chandler with the joint organizing group.
“Selected topics will range from childcare to
economic development, from Truth and Reconciliation
to Covid recovery, from climate
change to housing, from the opioid crisis to
post-secondary education.”
This forum will be co-hosted by the Bob
Hall with the Nelson and District Chamber
of Commerce and Kim Bater with Nelson at
its Best.
To register, go to www.nelsonlibrary.ca
You will have the opportunity to submit a
written question to the candidates when you
register.
The all-new Santa Cruz is here!
MVSA #30959
A single unspayed cat can produce 470,000 offspring
in just seven years. Sadly, most of them end up
abandoned at BC SPCA shelters or condemned to a
grim life on the streets. Be responsible - don’t litter.
The 2022 Santa Cruz is now in stock at Castlegar Hyundai, and we could not be more excited. The Santa Cruz is made
for adventure-seekers, outdoor enthusiasts, and do-it-yourselfers. It combines the flexibility of an open truck bed
with the comfort of an SUV so you can easily load your gear or cargo and start your next home project, family holiday
or Kootenay road trip. Contact us today to learn more about the 2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz and to arrange a test drive.
Exploring gender, sex,
and the history of Pride
Photo: Jamie Srigley
There are few things in this world that
evoke the sense of love, happiness and solidarity
as a well-executed Pride
parade. The rainbow flags, the
glitter, the costumes, the dancing
- an unstoppable force, topping
off a whirlwind weekend of events
during Nelson!s Pride Weekend,
which has been organized by the
Kootenay queer community for
over 20 years.
Queer Kootenays: We Love a
Parade, the latest exhibition at
Touchstones Nelson Museum,
ex- plores the history of the
LGBTQ+2S movement in the
Kootenays since the late 1960s.
The ex- hibition is community
curated, featuring stories, photographs,
videos, costumes, and
other in- formation from the
community, supported with
archival photographs from the
Shawn Lamb Archives. Together,
the items tell a familiar tale; one
where organizers and supporters
have been met with fear and
anger as often as they were welcomed
with open arms.
The exhibition is rooted by a
wall-mounted timeline, which
was researched by two stellar university
students, and informed by
the community. “The timeline is
a device that lets us see history at
a glance, from international to community
events which illustrate inclusion, intolerance,
celebration and ongoing change,” says
museum curator Arin Fay.
Nelson’s queer history is also being captured
in a short documentary, produced by
Touchstones Nelson Museum and Watershed
Productions. Queering the Interior centres on
“the people and moments that defined the
LGBTQ2S+ community in the Kootenays,
while paying tribute to the legacy of activism
that led to a diverse and robust queer population
today,” says director Amy Bohigian.
“Spanning decades, this half-hour documentary
will explore how the discrimination and
demands of one generation were transformed
into the rights and responsibilities of those
that followed.” This project was funded by the
Government of Canada’s New Horizons for
Seniors Program.
Showing concurrently with We Love a
Parade, is Montreal-based photographer JJ
Levine’s exhibition Alone Time/Queer Portraits.
Levine uses portraiture to explore the
relationship between photographer and subject,
and to highlight the fluidity of gender.
“Through these projects, I hope to provoke
thought, white maintaining my commitment
to formal photographic techniques,” Levine
says in their artist statement. “The underlying
Prepare for remote
interviews
Even after businesses have
reopened, remote interviews
will likely be the norm. Set
up an interview spot in your
home with good lighting, a
neutral background, limited
distractions, and a desirable
camera angle. Practice being
interviewed digitally. Master
various meeting applications
by downloading necessary
software in advance so that
technical difficulties will not
derail the process. The interviewer
sees only your background,
so utilize a paper or
whiteboard in front of you
with notes or talking points.
A job search may be complicated
by the coronavirus,
but there are steps to make
it easier to find a job. With
patience and positivity, the
odds can be in job-seekers’
favor.
Update your résumé for job hunting during COVID-19
The economy has struggled during
the COVID-19 pandemic, and many
people are concerned by what the future
may bring, particularly regarding their
careers. Some fields may continue to
scale back while others may increase
operations. There is much uncertainty
for those looking for new work or considering
changing jobs.
Even though the coronavirus may
slow down the process of hiring and
make it even more competitive, job
seekers must avoid the notion that
they should throw in the towel and try
to wait out the lull. Many people have
found new jobs during the pandemic,
and these strategies can help men and
women do just that.
Update your résumé
Many people may think that résumé
writing is a “one and done” process,
but that’s not the case. The Balance:
Careers says a résumé should be
updated and tweaked each time a
person applies for a position. Keep a
generalized outline for your résumé,
but be sure to modify your skills and
accomplishments as they pertain
to the specific job for which you’re
applying.
In many instances, a functional
résumé format, which emphasizes
skills over linear job experience, is a
good choice because it can gloss over
gaps in the résumé or frequent job
changes. Remember to fill the résumé
with the same verbiage used in the job
posting. If scanning software is used
to cull résumés for key words, yours
will have the right words and phrases.
Update social media
If you use a
social media
application like
LinkedIn, Plaxo
or Jobster to network,
be sure to
keep your profile
current. It
also may be
helpful to join industry networking
groups and organizations at this
time, as they may have an ongoing
aggregator of job openings in particular
fields.
Research the industry
While travel, hospitality and event
planning have been hit hard due to
COVID-19, other industries like
online shopping, delivery, healthcare,
grocery stores, cleaning services,
and more, have experienced growth.
Many industries also have revamped
operations and may need a consultant
or expert to help them change
over their business formats. Do not
assume that the pandemic has stalled
all job prospects.
