Amersham School
need your help
At Amersham School we are constantly
looking at ways to improve our school
facilities.
Our School’s Council have identified the need
for a large outdoor canopy to protect our
students from both the rain and the sun!
The canopy will provide a protected space
for the eating of packed lunches and for
socialising at break and lunch time in addition
to creating an outdoor teaching space.
We do not have the funds to make this happen
and have launched a ‘gofundme’ initiative
and are relying on the support of our local
community. To donate please use this link:
gofund.me/d62c2e10
Thank you SO, SO much for your consideration.
Your donation will make a very real difference to
our school environment come rain or shine!
Little Chalfont
Nature Park
Our beautiful nature park is a wonderful
place for the quiet enjoyment of nature,
and is very special because the meadow
is classed as ‘unimproved grassland’.
Such grassland is not only becoming very rare,
but England is one of only a few countries
in the world where it occurs naturally as it is
almost impossible to recreate. Essentially
it is rich in many types of grasses and wild
flowers that need to be mown each year after
flowering to allow the seeds to set and fall to
the ground.
This year we have had some unusual weather
in that in the early spring there was little rain
to encourage the meadow to grow. In spring
logs mark the paths to ask visitors to stay off
the meadow area to give it a chance to grow.
The meadow at the beginning of August
flourished again because of all the rain and
sunshine we had.
The image above, courtesy of Issy Green,
shows a brown argus butterfly, one of several
different butterflies that could be seen in the
meadow in this summer.
The meadow is due to be cut in August, now
that the grasses have gone to seed, and
visitors will once again be able to wander all
through the nature park. If you haven’t yet
visited the park, why not come and see it!
serving of home-cooked selection of
Asian starters, main courses, naan bread and
desserts, all prepared by club member Sukh
Tiwana and his friends and families. The
delicious food was washed down with beer
and wine served by tennis member and
barman, Adrian Radulescu.
The evening was a great success, and enjoyed
by a terrific 55 club members in a friendly,
Zena serves 20 years
Congratulations to Zena Hersey, the
longest serving volunteer at the British
Red Cross shop in Market Place. Zena
was presented with a well-deserved
20-year badge, and a hanging basket full
of flowers to compliment her beautiful
garden.
Shop manager Maureen Gillard thanked Zena,
calling her ‘a much-loved member of the
inspirational’.
‘The British Red Cross shop is a lovely
charity shop, and I was delighted when they
re-opened after being closed for lockdown’,
said regular customer Karen Dickson. “Even
with their strict Covid-compliant regulations in
place (limited numbers in store, compulsory
mask wearing and hand gel), they remain
to close due to lack of volunteers. They would
like to rekindle these clubs, especially after
witnessing the loneliness caused by Covid
lockdowns, and are looking for people who
might like to volunteer their help, especially in
Thorpe House School
Excitement is mounting for our summer
projects at Thorpe House Lower School,
which will enhance our boys’ learning
experiences both indoors and out.
Our impressive Griffin Castle will ensure climbing
THE YOUNG JOURNALIST
HS2: Friend or Foe?
HS2 (High Speed 2) is a railway network
currently under construction and is
prevalent in discussions regarding the
environment.
Concerns over its ecological impact have lead
to protests, whilst the HS2 website assures
the public that ‘it will be one of the most
environmentally responsible infrastructure
projects ever in the UK.’ The route directly affects
Amersham and surrounding towns including
Chalfont St. Giles and Chalfont St. Peter and
understandably results in unease in our
communities about how our environment
and lives might be affected. As the closest
HS2 station in our area - Old Oak Common -
would be a 45-minute drive from Amersham,
we must look at the bigger picture when
considering the benefits HS2 could have.
The exhumation of an expected 3,000 bodies
from the Medieval St. Mary’s Church, on route
of the rail network is a unique opportunity to
deepen our knowledge of the Norman period as
well as conscientiously excavating sites of historic
interest, HS2 proposes a ‘green corridor’ of
woodlands, ponds, and meadows running
alongside the track to create a network of
habitats; the use of this green corridor could
range from recreation to farming.
By replacing cars and planes as national
transport, HS2 claims that its long-term
environmental impact will greatly reduce national
carbon emissions. A shift from road to rail freight
would reduce carbon emissions by 76% and
carrying over 300,000 passengers a day, HS2
would reduce the number of people using
carbon-emitting vehicles. But what about the
carbon produced by HS2 itself? The rail network
strives to be energy-efficient and uses renewable
sources of energy. It is reassuring to know that,
as stated on the HS2 website, ‘Phase One of HS2
will produce less carbon than one month’s road
transport emissions.’
HS2 however, poses many potential threats to
our local wildlife habitats, especially ancient
woodlands. The Woodland Trust describes HS2
as ‘the biggest single threat from development
to ancient woodland’. In Buckinghamshire, four
ancient woodlands will be directly affected
by its construction. Although HS2 has claimed
that it will ‘translocate’ these habitats, Natural
England confirms that an ‘ancient woodland
ecosystem cannot be moved’. This loss of
woodland habitat would endanger our protected
species such as bats and badgers in addition to
destroying sanctuaries of historic interest for local
communities.
Construction might also contaminate our water
supply. After being initially refused information,
recently-elected MP, Sarah Green persevered
to gain access to HS2’s internal analysis of risk
to water supplies. Local water supplies to
Amersham and Chalfont St. Giles are two of
six public water sources affected, therefore the
water coming through our taps might be more
heavily processed and treated. A plethora of
both concerns and support for this infrastructure
project are emerging every day and as residents
of a uniquely precious area, we should keep
informed and support appeals to mitigate the
environmental and social impacts of HS2. Read
more about Buckinghamshire Council’s stance
on HS2 here: www.buckscc.gov.uk/services/
ISSUE 5
THE YOUNG
You can achieve
anything!
Victoria Hayward
The day had arrived! Within a few hours I
would step off a mini bus and prepare to
climb mountains with a sleeping mat and
tent on my back for the next four days.
I recalled The Duke of Edinburgh Bronze
Expedition I did here in Buckinghamshire which
was cold and I got helplessly lost - but this wasn’t
Wendover station I was heading to, I realised I
would be scaling the mountains of the Brecon
Beacons!
The first day was gentle, walking 10 kilometers
across the mountain range closest to our campsite.
I found this day interesting, as it was my first time
on a mountain. Our ascent was extremely steep
and I did well considering my lack of fitness.
Notwithstanding, the day was calm compared
to the second day, and we all enjoyed a relaxing
evening playing Uno and drinking hot chocolate,
preparing for the morrow.
I woke up excited on the second day… we didn’t
get lost and the sun was shining. I wouldn’t let
my 4 hours of sleep bother me, or affect the
challenge of a 23 kilometre walk. Day 2 was the day
I learnt the most about hiking and navigation skills,
how unpredictable weather on mountains
can be and the parameters of my physical and
mental strength. I always thought of myself as
resilient and durable, and it was refreshing to be
tasked with a day that tested those qualities, the
850 metre ascent left me drained and unable to
experience the euphoria the rest of my team
mates had, as we approached the home straight
of 23 kilometre. I would later learn that I was
experiencing a case of heat exhaustion, and
spent the whole of day three recuperating.
With day 4 passing calmly and quietly I’ll
comment on my favourite part of the expedition:
the wild camp. Civilisation was 200 metres above
us as we camped on a mountain for the night. I
found this isolation liberating, and the night
was accompanied by a rainstorm adding to the
excitement. I forgot to mention that this endeavour
was merely practise. I hope to experience a much
more predictable expedition with the experience
I now have, even if our next destination is the
Lake District.
JOURNALIST
The rewards of being
a volunteer
I volunteer at Amershan Centre Stars
Stage Stage School because I miss the
Arts. Run by Melissa Oden, it caters for
children aged between 3 and 8, in both
Amersham and Croxley Green.
After leaving Stagecoach Amersham in 2017 I
relied solely on my school, in providing my theatre
‘fixes’ and after lockdown and starting Sixth Form
I realised that I needed work experience in theatre
outside of school. When I started volunteering in
May I hadn’t been able to get work and struggled
to get a job without any experience, luckily, Melissa
welcomed me in with open arms, and I started
from there. I volunteer from 4pm until 6:15pm on
Tuesday evenings at the Amersham branch but
have also once volunteered at Croxley Green.
My role is as a Dance Assistant, just there to
help, really. Melissa is the only teacher, so having
someone else to support is quite crucial. This is so
that Melissa can carry on teaching whilst I help the
children if they need their shoelace tied, or need to
go to the loo. I also help run drama games,
introduce vocal warm-up ideas and Melissa
always lets me introduce any other ideas I have.
Moreover, what inspires me helping and listening to
the children is how excited they are to sing, dance
and act. Each child puts everything they have into
everything and it’s lovely to see how much they
enjoy what they’re doing.
Seeing the more nervous children come out their
shells and join in gradually over the weeks has
really inspired me in my own acting and it’s also
rewarding to see them develop friendships and
include each other. A particular occasion that
warmed my heart was when it got to the end of the
summer term, and the end-of-term show. It was
what we had been working towards for months
and it was incredibly touching to see it all come
together and for the children to dance, act and
sing their hearts out, performing all the songs and
scripts perfectly.
I recommend volunteering, it is truly worth while
because you give back to the community in so
many ways. It doesn’t have to be theatre as there
are so many different types of volunteering like
charity, local museums, shops and community
projects. It’s an amazing way to do your part
for your local area and it’s great fun! On pages
13, 20, 23 and 24 in the magazine there are
organisations that are looking for volunteers,
why not get involved.
Jess Riley is a Sixth-Form student
and Head Girl at Amersham
School studying Drama, English
Literature and History. She hopes
to become an actress in the
future.
COMMUNITY NEWS
Volunteering is
“Good for you”
After nearly 15 months of Zoom
meetings, Beavers (boys and girls aged
6 to 8), Cubs (boys and girls aged 8 to
10), Scouts (boys and girls aged 10 to
14) and Explorers (boys and girls aged
14 to 17) are returning.
The children and young people have been
taking part in activities using Zoom and
earning badges. This means lots of sewing
for parents and carers!
Because of the number of children wanting
to join Scouting, we are looking for some
more volunteers. Being involved in Scouting
helps confidence, making friends, learning
new skills and passing on knowledge to others.
Many groups are undertaking outside
activities. These include lots of walks with
children clocking up miles for the Hikes-Away
badge. Toasting marshmallows on an open fire
has also been a popular, (especially when they
are squashed between two chocolate biscuits!)
James Palin, Lead volunteer for Buckinghamshire
Scouts said, “Through lockdown we expected
and had reduced numbers”. The children are
now coming back in droves. They are excited
to see friends and volunteers hitherto seen
only on Zoom. They are looking forward to
pioneering, visiting the fire station, pitching tents,
playing games and a host of other activities.”
LEGAL NEWS
Family Law Myths
We often get asked about family law myths so here
are two of the more common ones.
We’re not married but I am a common law spouse
Let’s be clear – there is no such thing!
Put simply, when a relationship of two people who
were not married or in a civil partnership breaks
down, the Courts’ powers are limited. Separated
partners can ask the Courts to deal with ownership
and sale of property on principles of Trust and
Property Law. They can potentially seek financial
support from their ex-partner for the benefit of their
children and can apply for Child Arrangements and
other Court Orders under the Children Act 1989.
Unfortunately this is largely the extent of it. The Courts
are not concerned with fairness, the overall picture or
maintenance for the benefit of one or other partner.
However, the good news is that a proposed
Cohabitation Rights Bill, has started its journey
through Parliament, receiving its first reading in
2020. But there is still a long way to go before
the draft Bill makes its way into law!
Pre-nuptial agreements - not worth the paper
they are written on!
This is no longer true! While there is no UK
legislation dealing with pre-nuptial agreements,
there is supportive case law.
Currently English law states that pre-nuptial agreements
are not automatically binding. However, if properly
prepared, they may well be upheld. So what does
‘properly prepared’ mean? The key criteria:-
1. The agreement must be freely entered into (each
party taking independent legal advice)
2. The couple must understand the implications of the
agreement (which means full financial disclosure,
providing clarity on future claims either may be giving
up)
3. It must not be unfair to uphold the parties to their
agreement in the circumstances at the time of the
divorce. Pre-nuptial agreements are more likely to
be upheld in short marriages - the agreement is less
likely to become out of date or be superseded by
unforeseen events during the marriage.
So, if considering a pre-nuptial do seek
independent legal advice and make sure
the agreement is done properly for your
best chance of it being upheld.
£294,000 Green
Recovery grant
received to protect
chalk streams and
wetland habitats.
The grant will fund a suite of schemes
developed by the Chilterns Chalk Streams
Project, and will combine practical
restoration and enhancement with education
and engagement activity focused on chalk
streams and wetland habitats in the Chilterns.
Two jobs will be created, hosted by lead
partner The Chiltern Society. Other
organisations and voluntary groups, including
the local Wildlife Trust, Revive the Wye, Benson
Environment Group and the Chiltern Rangers
will also benefit from increased resilience and
capacity. By connecting nature and people, the
project aims to secure a healthy future for chalk
streams and for the people, communities and
businesses of both the Chilterns AONB and
nearby urban areas.
Chalk streams are some of the planet’s rarest
habitats, and 85% of them are found in
England. There are nine chalk streams in the
Chilterns, including the Chess, Misbourne,
Wye and Hughenden Stream. Chalkstreams
supports a wide diversity of plants and animals,
including fast-declining species such as the
water vole. The aquifer that supplies them
with clear, pure spring water also provides
drinking water for local communities.
Yet our chalk streams are under threat. The
Chilterns has one of the highest rates of
domestic water use in the country, which,
combined with the impacts of climate
change, are causing the streams to dry
out more frequently. In addition, pollution,
urban development and invasive, non-native
species are also threatening the health of
these streams. In terms of the urgent need
for protection, Defra government minister
Rebecca Pow has called chalk streams
England’s ‘rainforests’.
The River Chess at Marsh Field
This grant will be used to create essential
habitats for water voles and brown trout
on the river Chess, re-naturalise sections
of riverbank at Chesham Moor, and restore a
tributary of the River Wye at Wycombe Marsh,
Maximising your
kitchen space
So many people I speak to have made
changes to their properties during
lockdown – whether redecorating
specific rooms or creating new spaces
for home offices or gyms.
It’s not a big surprise as we have spent the
best part of a year confined to our homes
and have ultimately reconsidered what we
want and need from the space we have
available. We are also spending much more
time in our kitchens as a family and
expect to use it for various activities
(not just cooking!) such as entertaining
and home-schooling.
So, what should you consider if you are
looking to change or redesign your kitchen?
Utilise your dining table
The dining table sits at the heart of any
great meal or gathering and is perfect
for bringing the family together or for
socialising with friends. As a family we have
always sat down together at the dining
table for our meals. If you are designing a
new kitchen, consider whether you’ll get
more use out of a dining table instead of a
about how you could use an alcove
empty corner.
Entertaining at home
It’s no surprise that home bars are
trending as more of us have been
entertaining at home. Add a wine cooler
unit to your kitchen island or go for a
sophisticated drinks trolley that you can
tuck into a corner. You could even convert
a well-organized kitchen unit into a place
to store drinks and cocktail shakers.
I hope you enjoy the rest of the summer
and make the most of your kitchen space,
it really is the heart of any home.
Connect to the outdoors
If you’re looking to renovate, it is a good
time to think about linking your inside and
outside spaces. This can be easily achieved
by installing skylights, glass doors, and
plenty of glazing overlooking the garden.
Use a similar palette of colours, patterns
and materials that complement your outside
space.
Safe & gentle ear wax removal at a clinic near you
Ear wax removal should always be conducted by a qualified
medical professional. We do not recommend using over the
counter solutions to manually syringe your ears or using hopi
ear candling. Microsuction is recognised as the safest and gentlest
method to remove wax from the ear canal. It involves placing a
suction tube into the ear canal to gently suck the wax out. There
is no water involved, is a completely dry procedure and can be
done on ears that are not suitable for irrigation/syringing at the GP.
Irrigation is the use of a controlled flow of water to flush out
wax from the ear. It is safer than manual syringing which is now
a banned practice in the UK. Irrigation can be particularly useful
for very deep wax. Your audiologist should make the most
appropriate recommendation on how to remove the wax.
Our associated clinicians are all registered with the HCPC. They
have all undertaken training, and achieved competency in wax
removal and should luse best practice procedures to ensure you
walk away a happy and satisfied customer.
Are you experiencing any of the following?
• Pressure in the ears
• Blocked feeling in the ears
• Need to pop your ears but can’t
• Sudden loss of hearing or muffles sound
• Hearing aids whistling
• Underperforming hearing aids
If you are experiencing any of the above then book in to see us today!
Re-engage at
Lindengate
Lindengate has flourished this Summer and
with the government guidelines easing,
why not get together with friends, family
Lindengate at our five acre site in Wendover.
Our staff and team of volunteers have been
busy maintaining the site and we are now
seeing an abundance of produce from
our kitchen gardens, as well as incredible
wildflowers and broods of ducklings, who are
thriving.
We know that many businesses and local
community groups are working towards
coming together again, to re-engage and
catch up. At Lindengate, we believe the
natural environment contributes to improving
wellbeing through nature, so why not arrange
your next gathering at Lindengate, whether for
a business team meeting, or with a group of
friends. Bring refreshments or a picnic and
