www.ashburtoncourier.co.nz Stay alert at Level 2 Iwant to thankeveryonehere in Mid Canterburyfor all the hard work over the past few weeks as together, we’ve stayedhome to keep covidat bay. It’s been greattosee so many people following the Alert Level3and 4rulesand to see some of the creative ways you havebrightened up life in your bubbles. As we make the move down to Alert Level2,it’s important we all continue to play our partto stamp out covid.Deltaismore infectious than the original virus,and it can move faster, so while we are no longeratthe higheralert level, thatdoesn’t mean we can takeour eyes off the ball. We all needtostay alert and keep up those key healthbehaviours that have helpedusbeat covid in the past. We know that the Delta variant of Covid19 has changed the game,soinorder to beat it, we’ve had to adapt our game plan too.Level 2isdifferent to how it’sbeen before. Here are some of the golden rules: Face coverings are now mandatory at Alert Level 2 whenever you are inside most publicvenues, such as shopping centres, libraries or retail shops.However, you can take your mask off in hospitality venues so thatyou can eat and drink. Staff at these venues, and at any publicfacingbusinesses open at Level2,must wear face coverings. Peopleshouldbescanning everywhere theygo. However, recordkeeping is also mandatoryunder Level 2for some venues,including bars, restaurants, cinemas, concerts, churches,and closecontact businesses like hairdressers. Because Delta is more transmissible, we’re much more worried aboutbig groupsof people. It’s now no longer whetheryou have enough space between you and others; but ratherifyou have too many peopleinashared space with poor ventilation,that ups the risk. For indoor venues, thereisa limit of 50 peoplefor indoor gatherings, hospitality settings and event venues. This,coupled with the rules around customers being seatedand tables being separated, reducesdown the risk of superspreader events. For outdoor venues, you can have up to 100 peopleinthat space,alongside the rules of being seatedand separated. The second change relatesto indoorpublicfacilities like gyms, museums and libraries. Previouslythese venues have had no hardlimit on how many peopleare allowed to be in a space,but aone metre distancing ruleasaproxy for how many people could be inside. We’re now bringing this into alignmentwith the rules for retailand supermarkets, which is 2metres. The best way to protect yourself and your loved ones is to get vaccinated, and our vaccinationrolloutis continuing safely at Level 2. Everyone aged 12 and over is now abletobook their vaccine, so if you haven’talready done so, I’d really encourage you to head to bookmyvaccine.nz or call 0800 28 29 26 to make your appointment. Stone wetas are found in the high country, living under and among rocks. Wetas are special BY MARY RALSTON After dealing with both winter andlockdown we shouldbe able to empathise with stone weta. Weta are special New Zealandinsects. There are about 70speciesthatlive in a wide range of habitats, from alpine rocks to caves, the coast andoffshoreislands. Theylook abit like crickets or grasshopppers but are flightless and are some of the heaviest insects in the world. Stone weta are onespecies of weta found in this district. These amazing insects canbe inactive for up to 5months of theyear andsurvive temperatures down to minus 10 degrees for over two weeks. Usually theyliveinthe alpine zone above 1000 mbut they arealsofoundlower than that, living under rocksalong theedges of small high country rivers, such as the Stour. These weta may not have fared well in the big floods afew monthsago when river levels were at record highs androcks tumbled over. Stone weta are actuallya type of tree weta, but have adapted to living under rocks andinrock cavities.This helps to make themless accessibletopredators. Nocturnal habits mayhelp them avoid native predators such asfalcons and lizards, butisnodefence against cats, stoats, ratsand mice.These introduced mammals have taken atoll of wetas, along with other native insects and birds. On the coldest days of winter when temperatures are wellbelow freezing, the stone weta seem to befrozen solid. Butonawarm winter day, theythawout and are activeundertheir rocky homes. It seemsthattheymake a type of antifreeze during autumnwhich protects them. This circulates in their blood duringwinter andthen decreasesinspringand summer. Plantsand small invertebrates make up the diet of the stone weta.They are quite longlived for insects–up to eight years. They maybefour before reaching maturity.
