our beliefs
We believe in home, that it should be a place of comfort, rest,
and security. We believe families are sacred—the ones we inherit
and the ones we create. We believe in seeking balance between
productivity and rest and learning to find contentment in both. We
believe in human kindness and the power of working together to
accomplish big goals. We believe in courage, in moving past comfort
zones, and honestly seeking knowledge from mistakes. We believe
that each day is a gift and miracles are visible if only we look for them.
COVID-19
UPDATE
Cambridge Retirement Living continues to remain vigilant
in our pursuit of the health and safety of our staff
and our residents in the face of COVID-19 and its variants.
Our restrictions too, remain the same, under the guidance
of the PA Department of Human Services, and the
Centers for Medicare and Medicaid services. Masks
must be worn, hands must be washed, and social distancing
is to be maintained.
But little by little we are finding our sense of freedom
and fun once again! Our Cambridge communities are so
looking forward to all of the fun that fall has to offer.
From Scarecrow Competitions to Drive-in Movie Nights,
to fun fall visits from family, we are so excited to be able
to share our love with our communities and loved ones
once again.
We will continue to closely monitor the requirements
and restrictions to stay Covid Safe, but for now let’s continue
to convene! We have missed you deeply, and we
know our residents are grateful to hold you close again!
CHERYL
Compliance
Q: What is your name?
A: Cheryl Carnes
A: Weirton, WV, but have lived in Hawaii,
PA, NJ, CA and NV.
STAFF FEATURE
Q: What do you love most about
working with seniors?
A: ...listening to their stories and
their sense of humor. It’s a little different
when working with Residents
with Dementia & Alzheimer’s because
their disease is heartless and I
have empathy for them as their Golden
Years were cut short , so anything
we can do to make their lives more
comfortable I see as a blessing.
Q: What's a fun fact about you?
A: I enjoy travel and the sense of
travel. I feel traveling is the best education
a person can have. A fun fact
about me is that I have a provisional
patent on a pet product and I am in a
group with the “Shark Tank “ entrepreneurs.
Q: When did you get started working
with seniors?
A: I started as a volunteer in high
school. I held other jobs in between,
but my love for seniors was still there,
so I returned to college and obtained
my Nursing Home Administrator’s
license. I've been doing it ever since
and absolutely love it.
Q: Do you have a favorite hobby?
A: I am a devoted Steeler fan and
paint my face and dress in my full
gear every Sunday. I stay in touch
with people that I have worked with
over the years and get together with
them as often as possible (I cook and
host dinner parties.) Friends and
family are extremely important to
me. Unfortunately, my husband is a
Giants fan…but I have a great sense
of humor!

LETTER
from the
EDITOR
By Lance Knickerbocker
M
y mom loves to decorate. She’s the
kind of person who gets excited about the
seasons because it means the big boxes of
decorations come out from under the stairs.
Some people call them knick-knacks. Mom
calls them her stuff.
As in: “It’s almost time to get the fall stuff
out!”
Fall is easy to decorate for. Hay bales. Ponderosa.
Fake pumpkins. Gourds. Scarecrows.
To say nothing of all the spooky Halloween
stuff. It’s a low-key ramp up to all the loud
Christmas shenanigans to come.
Few things in our house were permanent
fixtures. What hung on the walls, the dishware,
rugs, even what we wore to church had
seasonality. Only the refrigerator itself was
invulnerable to Mom’s seasonal set changes.
And that was because Sears never figured out
how to do a fall freezer.
I think back to what our house was like during
fall and immediately my favorite decoration
comes to mind.
It was a glass prism that hung in our living
room window during the fall months, when
the harvest sun seemed to linger closer to
the earth, sending light into our home at the
golden hours.
The prism was a half-pint polyhedron vessel-
-think two pyramids glued together at the
base like a playing card diamond--that performed
a trick when you filled it with water.
As the light traveled through the clear glass
the water sent rainbows of light skittering
into the room.
I’ve never seen it’s match, and the other day
I was thinking about it so I sent my mom a
text. Did she remember the rainbow water
vessel crystal thing?
Of course she did.
“Your grandfather made those.”
Wow, I texted back. I never knew that.
I hope as you read this latest issue of Cambridge
Times you’re reminded of all the
things that make fall such a powerful season.
I think about you, our readers, and I wonder
if there’s anything you remember from your
childhood -- a fond knick-knack -- that recalls
memories of the harvest season, of love,
of mom, of home. I bet there is.
I’d love to hear from you and you can send
me an email to lance@freelancelance.com.
Please enjoy this edition of our newsletter!
VA BENEFITS
What are they, am I eligible, and how can I apply?
EDUCATION ARTICLES
What are they?
The Veterans Pension program provides monthly
payments to wartime Veterans who meet certain
age or disability requirements, and who have income
and net worth within certain limits.
Maximum Monthly Aid & Attendance Pension:
Surviving Spouse:
$1,209
Single Veteran:
Married Veteran (spouse needs care)
Married Veteran (with care needs):
$2,230
Eligibility Requirements?
Military History:
Service in a combat zone is not a requirement. Veteran’s
must have served 90 days active duty with 1
day during a period of war: WWII, Korea, Vietnam,
or Gulf. An honorable, general, or medical military
discharge is required.
The VA defines this as follows:
• WWII: December 7, 1941--December
31,1946
• Korean Conflict: June 27, 1950--January 31,
1955
• Vietnam War: February 28, 1961--May 7,
1975 for veterans who served in the Republic
of Vietnam; otherwise August 5, 1964--
(For VA Benefits purposes, this time of war is
still in effect)
Medical Needs:
The Veteran or spouse must have physical or
mental conditions that require the assistance of
another individual on a regular basis.
Income Considerations:
If care expenses exceed income, the maximum
benefit is awarded; most meet this qualification.
Net Worth:
The VA considers net worth in making its determination;
with proper planning most can become
eligible.
Surviving Spouse:
A spouse must have been married to the Veteran
until death and never remarried.
How can I apply?
You can apply by phone,
mail, in person or online.
For more information about
pension information or to
find your local specialist scan
Call Cambridge at 814-205-0948 to learn more about how the Aid and Attendance
Pension may help you pay for your veteran’s care. For more information on income
considerations and net worth speak with your local VA specialist to learn more!
"but...what do i say?"
When it's time for your loved one to move into a retirement living situation, how do you bring
it up? What do you say? We've been asked this question often, so we decided to compile all
of the helpful tips and suggestions we've learned along the way...
do your research.
Before you begin to plant the seed or
have the conversation, first educate
yourself about local retirement communities
so you’ll have a better understanding
of the right fit for your elderly
loved one. Their needs may be much
higher than you’re willing to admit, and
that’s okay. You’ll help yourself stay objective
with the following step.
create a list.
Jot down your concerns and needs for
your aging loved one.
Have you noticed the signs of Alzheimer’s
or other memory loss diseases? Are
you concerned about health problems?
Or daily activities such as grooming,
medication management, or cooking?
Compare this with your research to find
the best unique care for your parent.
Plant the seed first before your extended
conversation. Mention that there
are options that could make their life
easier, happier, and safer. Don’t push it.
If they are resistant, it’s okay to tackle it
another day.
but when is it time?
There are pros and cons to “not hesitating
vs. waiting for a ‘teachable moment’.”
Your situation is unique. If Mom
falls, you can use this as a springboard
to present a better way of living. But
you may find the conversation more difficult
to have in a time of crisis should a
medical emergency arise.
having the conversation
If you’re not sure where to start,
try these conversation starters:
• How is it living at home? Do you
still feel safe? (If there has been a
crisis or ‘teachable moment’ now
is the time to mention it)
• Do you have any plans for long
term care, if you got sick or fell at
home alone?
• Do you feel lonely sometimes?
Would you like to spend more time
with folks your age?
• Would you feel less stress if you
didn’t have to worry about this
house?
• Have you thought about having
an extra hand around to help with
laundry, housekeeping, or cooking?
Once you’ve begun, remember
these tips for a healthier
conversation:
have it in person if possible.
Block out a time where you’re both
rested and relaxed. Be present so they
know you care.
lead with empathy.
You may be struggling with a case
of dementia, or confusion with age.
Providing empathy will help you
maintain patience through a difficult
conversation and help you to avoid
minimizing their feelings or making
them feel like you’re “sorry for them”.
focus on the positives.
Instead of leading the conversation
with all of their limitations, express how
much easier life could be if they had
qualified assistance.
let them know you love them.
If you approach the conversation with
love and concern for their wellbeing as
your top priority, you may find it much
easier to have a productive dialogue.
let them decide.
Give them us much control in the situation
as possible. If they feel as if they
are making the decision for themselves,
it can help secure their autonomy and
dignity, while still granting them a safer
environment. You can arrange a visit
with them to a community, or plan to
talk again when they feel more ready.
Hopefully there is no need to rush, and
with time you can come to an unpressured
mutual agreement.
RESIDENT FEATURE
Meet
“I made a
promise to my
dad to never
forget my her-
itage. Through
my music I am
keeping my
promise.”
12

Ivan and parents, Ivan Sr. and Theresa
Ivan Babich is an extraordinary person.
Curious, fun loving, and ever-so
knowledgeable, Ivan continually astounds
us with his talents.
But Ivan says he has a secret to life. “I
made a promise to my dad to never
forget my heritage. Through my music
I am keeping my promise.” And
through every walk of life his love of
music has led him on.
Ivan was born January 3rd,
1935, in Aliquippa, PA. He was first
generation, born in the USA. In 1909
His father Ivan S. Babich took the
long and perilous trip to Ellis Island
all the way from Croatia at the young
age of 17. Ivan Sr. met his mother
Theresa Turkovich in Johnstown, PA
not far from where Ivan grew up. His
father’s Croatian culture was a constant
and powerful force in Ivan’s
life. Inspiring him as he aged and was
educated in Aliquippa, PA.
Though music was always at
the forefront of Ivan’s life, another
love took hold. Teaching. Ivan graduated
from Duquesne University with
a degree in teaching, and along the
way became fluent in 5 different languages!
Ivan can speak English, Serbian,
Slovenian, Croatian and Spanish.
(He and our other Serbian speaking
resident Lillian chat in Serbian to this
day, and it’s a real treat for anyone
near to hear them converse!).
Ivan was constantly learning
and taught himself something
new every single summer to bring in
more income. He eventually became
the math teacher at Center Township
Jr. High and remained there, molding
young mathematician’s minds for 42
years.
You’d think being a brilliant
teacher, knowledgeable in multiple
languages and a true renaissance
man would be enough…but
not for Ivan. Instead, he joined the
Duquesne University Tamburitzans.
The decision to join was an important
one for Ivan. Not only did it fuel
his passion for music and call upon
his Eastern European roots…but it’s
also where he got to work and play
music with his wife, Margaret McElhaney.
Margaret and Ivan played together
in many Tambaritzan groups,
and their mutual love of music quickly
turned into a love of each other!
Ivan Babich and Margaret were married
in 1959 and have been together
now for 65 years. They are the proud
parents of three children, two boys,
one girl, and are delighted to be
grandparents to a grandchild.
Ivan continued to learn new
skills, but a turning point for him was
in 1970, when he made his first Tamburica.
(A small stringed instrument
Custom instruments made by Ivan
Ivan in his Tambaritzan group costume
much like a guitar). He found such
success in his building that he was
commissioned for batches of them,
shipping them all across the US.
Eventually Ivan had a full
wood shop where he could make
all sorts of instruments. If he didn’t
have a tool to build them, he would
build the tools all on his own.
Between building and teaching,
playing music and parenting,
Ivan and his wife still managed to
travel to Europe six times! Visiting
Croatia, Slovenia, Hungary, Ireland,
Wales, Scotland, Germany and England!
His quest for learning and
love of music are still strong. He is
an amazing crafter, builder, and balloon-ball
whacker!
Today we are honored to
have such a brilliant man at Cambridge
Pointe. Ivan has been featured
on our facebook page sharing
his guitar building talents and answering
questions from his adoring
fans and fellow residents. Ever the
teacher, and music master, we love
you Ivan!
adventure! Here's one of their recent favorites...
Ralph Locurcio continues to astound and delight us as our own personal tour guide
For this session, Cambridge residents sat comfortably in their theatre chairs to be
flown first class all the way to Scotland! Residents of Cambridge Pointe and Cambridge
castles, rolling hills and gorgeous highlands, and even toured the local cuisine!
SCOTLAND EDITION
Oftentimes for our Armchair Travels, we’ll sample some of the local cuisine ourselves…but
no one seemed particularly interested in haggis at Cambridge Pointe or
DO IT YOURSELF
HALLOWEEN COSTUMES
Halloween is a favorite holiday for many of our residents. It promises, candy, games,
and of course, costumes! So, while you’re preparing for this spooky season, why not try
some DIY! We’ve compiled our favorite simple DIY costumes we’ve seen over the years,
with budget and ease in mind! Happy crafting, and Happy Halloween!
Sweet Treat
A few brightly colored balloons, a clear garbage bag, and a sweet
sign are all you’ll need to transform yourself into this adorable
bag of jellybeans! Pair it with some fun tights and you’re ready to
trick or treat for something sweet!
Looking Sharp!
We LOVE this simple DIY cactus look! Simply sew or glue yarn to
an old green shirt and add your favorite dark pants for a potted
plant look! If you're feeling extra crafty...a tuft of flowering pink
on a headband makes it a show-stopper! Pretty fly for a cacti!
JUST FOR FUN
Blast Off!
Save those old soda bottles, because you could be crafting something
out of this world! Silver spray paint, and crinkled tissue
paper 'flames' make the perfect jet pack for any astronaut! Pair
with a bright snow suit and you're off to infinity and beyond!
Deep Sea DIY
Grab some bubble wrap, streamers, and/or colored string lights
and simply glue or tie them to the ends of an old umbrella! Don
your best white or colorful duds underneath and take a deep
dive as a jazzy jellyfish!
Batty for Bats!
If you’re feeling particularly scary try another umbrella DIY by
carefully removing the handle and cutting a black umbrella down
the middle for foldable bat wings! Some paper ears on a headband
and a pitch-black ensemble will complete this spooky look!
Condiment Couple!
For a cute couples costume, look no further than Ketchup and
Mustard! Wear all yellow or all red, and use construction paper
for a cone, and an aluminum pie tin for a cap, spray paint and
you’re ready to hit Halloween town with your best friend!
If you or your kiddos end up trying out
our DIY, or if you’ve got other costumes
at the ready, we would LOVE TO SEE
YOU! Our residents get so much joy
when the trick-or-treaters come to visit,
so bring your friends and family this
Halloween to show off your spooky stuff!
Happy Halloween!
