Fleet joins Board of Health
By Tréa lavery
Dr. Geoffrey A. Talbot, 87
11/15/1933 - 5/27/2021
MELROSE - Dr. Geoffrey A. Talbot,
87, of Lynnfield, died on Thursday
May 27, 2021 at Melrose-Wakefield
Hospital, following a brief illness.
Dr. Talbot spent his last days
in the very hospital that not too
long ago celebrated his 50 plus
years being on the staff. Dr. Talbot
will not only be remembered as a
skilled urologist, but as a truly generous
and caring individual who
always tried to offer his help. From
his time as a doctor in the Navy
aboard the USS Wasp, to a urology
practice in Melrose and Stoneham
that spanned half a century, he
never lost the desire to try to help
others. Dr. Talbot is survived by his
three sons Alan, Christopher and
Chandler as well as his first wife
Jeanne and second wife Sharon.
Class of 1970 to hold
50(plus one)-year
reunion
By sam miNToN
It's an event that, for the Peabody
High School Class of 1970,
has been a long time coming.
After the COVID-19 pandemic
canceled their 50th anniversary,
the Class of 1970 will
finally be able to hold a reunion
on Sept. 25, from 7 p.m. to midnight
at Teresa's Function Hall,
20 Elm St., in North Reading.
Joyce Cucchiara is a graduate
of the class and has stayed in
Peabody her entire life. She said
that the group planning the event
is very excited to be holding the
event after being forced to wait
a year.
"None of us gave up, and
right now to this date we have
108 people coming and we are
doing pretty good," she said.
This isn't your normal highschool
class either. In 1969, the
Class of '70 was able to witness
the Tanners win the Class A
Championship in football. The
football players and cheerleaders
were honored by the school
at a ceremony two years ago to
celebrate the championship's
own 50th anniversary.
Cucchiara believes that part
of the reason that the class has
Private
stayed so close after all these
years is the success of the football
team.
"We had great sports and, let's
face it, I think the camaraderie of
the sports brought us closer together,"
she said.
After an intervening year of
pandemic-induced protocols,
those who planned the reunion
will have plenty of hand sanitizer
on deck, while masks will be
optional for participants.
Especially with the pandemic
not allowing for people to come
together, Cucchiara, a longtime
Peabody resident, said this event
was highly anticipated.
"Everybody is dying to be
back together again," she said.
"This is something that, after 50
years, we felt like we wanted to
have. We didn't want to pass up
on this."
People as far as California
and Florida are coming to attend
the reunion, which is yet another
testament to how close the class
is. Cucchiara also added that she
still sees her high school buddies
around town.
Tickets are $60.00 per person.
A TRADITION OF TRUST, CARING & PROFESSIONAL SERVICE TO THE COMMUNITY SINCE 1952
The Peabody Board of Health
has a new member: osteopathic
physician Julia Fleet.
Fleet, who went to medical
school at the University of New
England College of Osteopathic
Medicine in Biddeford, Maine,
was appointed by City Council
last month. She will join board
Chair Thomas Durkin and Anthony
Carli on the board.
"I'm really excited to join the
group," she said. "I couldn't be
more impressed with everybody
that I've met."
Fleet began her career by
completing a residency in family
practice at UMass Memorial
Hospital in Worcester, then
spent another year working in
Pittsfield. She spent time working
in urgent care, but said that
now, she has mostly transitioned
to telemedicine.
In May, she was helping administer
COVID-19 vaccines
at the Senior Center when she
met Sharon Cameron, Peabody's
health director. Cameron told
her that former member Dr.
Leigh Ann Mansberger would
be stepping away from her position,
and that the board is mandated
to have a member who is
a physician.
At first, Fleet wasn't sure
about the idea of joining, because
she had never done anything
like it before. Eventually,
though, she came around to the
Peabody residents set to
participate in Jimmy Fund Walk
For The Weekly NeWs
Seven residents from Peabody
will choose their own
routes on October 3 for the Boston
Marathon® Jimmy Fund
Walk: Your Way presented by
Hyundai. Participants are encouraged
to “Walk Your Way”
from wherever they are most
comfortable—whether that be
from their neighborhood, favorite
trail, or from a treadmill in
their own home.
Gianna Anzalone, Lindsay
Huntoon, Janis Marshall, Emily
Marshall, Mandi McLaughlin,
Christine O’Brien, and Martha
Theriault, along with thousands
of other walkers, will participate
in virtual programming during
the Walk that aims to recreate
the most inspiring elements of
Walk day. While the event will
not physically bring walkers together
along the famed Boston
Marathon course, it will unite
the community to raise funds
to support all forms of adult
and pediatric care and cancer
research at the nation’s premier
cancer center, Dana-Farber
Cancer Institute. The event has
raised more than $150 million
for Dana-Farber Cancer Institute
in its 30+ year history.
This year’s event will have a
lower fundraising requirement,
$100 for adults and $25 for those
under 18, with a $5 registration
fee. All registered walkers will
receive a bib and medal and the
first 5,000 to register will receive
a Jimmy Fund Walk T-shirt.
idea.
"My grandfather, who has
since passed away, was very involved
in various planning committees
in Haverhill and served
on the board for nursing home
registration," she said. "He was
very involved, and I thought,
how wonderful is that ― to be
involved and serve."
Fleet said that she is looking
forward to helping the board
continue to deal with the pandemic,
encouraging everyone to
get vaccinated and continue to
wear masks. She also said that
she is excited about the environmental
aspect of working on
the board, helping the city make
decisions that are climate-conscious.
"Dr. Mansberger has really
big shoes to fill, but I think I'm
up for the task and I'm looking
forward to it," she said.
Funds raised from the Jimmy
Fund Walk support all forms of
adult and pediatric patient care
and cancer research at the nation’s
premier cancer center,
Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.
The Boston Athletic Association
has supported the Jimmy Fund
Walk since 1989, and Hyundai
has been the presenting sponsor
since 2002.
FundWalk) or to support a walker
Jimmy Fund Walk participants
are encouraged to utilize the
Charity Miles App to help with
training and fundraising, engage
with Dana-Farber patient stories
and podcasts, and much more!
