septentrionaux. Cependant au pied
de la même montagne l’on trouve
le Stoechas arabica (Lavandula
stoechas) qui est une plante qui ne
vient que dans les pays méridionaux
de ce te province. »
What is a “Grand Site de France”?
A Grand Site de France is an eminent symbolic area of
outstanding natural beauty and interest. These areas
are protected by the French law of 2nd May 1930
concerning “the protection of natural monuments
and sites of artistic, historic, legendary or picturesque
nature”. They are very well known; most have “three
stars” in tourist guidebooks. Concors and Sainte-
Victoire represent 23 476 ha, the 3rd widest protected
area in France.
The ‘Grands Sites’ managers joined together in the “Grands Sites de France
Network” to pursue one ambition : to put the preservation of the “sense of
places” at the heart of everything they do, so that every visitor, both today
and tomorrow, can live, breathe and feel the experience of the site.
The “Grand Site de France” label guarantees that the site is conserved and
managed following sustainable development principles, which combine the
conservation of the landscape, the ‘spirit’ of the site, the quality of the visitors’
experience and the participation of the inhabitants
and partners in the life of the Grand Site.
The French Ministry of Ecology and Sustainable Development,
in co-operation with the Grands Sites De France
network have set out regulations for the use of the label.
The Grand Site Sainte- Victoire was one of the fi rst four
sites to acquire the label in 2004. The label was renewed
in 2011.
For further information
Looking at www.grandsitedefrance.com you will learn
more about the 44 members of this network and will be
drawn towards, amongst others, the Marais Poitevin, the
Pont du Gard, Saint Guilhem le Désert, Pointe de Raz, Aven
d’Orgnac, Canigou, Puy de Dôme. Come and visit these
sites, and make your dreams come true!
Sainte-Victoire
Grand Site de France
As part of the Aix-Marseille-Provence Métropole
institution, Sainte-Victoire, Grand Site de France, deals
with three broad missions :
• Fire prevention of the massifs (trail maintenance,
clearing of underbrush, interaction with agricultural
and hunting activities, surveillance…) ;
• Preservation and enhancement of natural heritage
(fl ora, fauna, delicate natural areas), man-made heritage
sites (chapels, oratories, retaining walls, the Croix de
Provence, historical vestiges…) ;
• Welcome services and cooperation with local
activities (parking lot and walking path maintenance,
sports statutes, promotion of local products, public
information services, educational activities,…)
Well-known to everyone for their great beauty, Grands
Sites de France are actually landscape conservation areas
which are protected by law.
Their aim is to protect very attractive, fragile sites, while
allowing visitors to take the time to explore them and
enjoy a sensible experience in the site.
