We want people’s choice

Mayor tries to allay concerns after picketing residents claim chosen candidate selected unfairly

ABONGILE

S O L U N D WA N A

The Chris Hani ANC region

is confronted with internal

conflicts ahead of the

voter registration weekend for

the local government elections,

with some candidates’ disputes

still unresolved.

In some quarters, party

members are accusing the

region of meddling in candidate

selection processes, fuelling

i n s t a b i l i t y.

On Wednesday, ward 7

residents from Ezibeleni

picketed at the Chris Hani ANC

regional offices in Ebden Street,

demanding that the “people’s

ch o i c e ” makes the ballot paper.

Ward 7 resident Loyiso

Xalisa said their chosen ward

candidate was selected unfairly.

He said their disputes and

written letters kept falling on

deaf ears as they had sent them

to the regional office and the

province without receiving

attention.

He alleges the ANC in the

region took too long to give a

ve r d i c t .

“The verdict was out on

August 12 but we only received

it on September 8, which made

us inform community members

about what was happening.

“We are requesting the

region to give us the candidate

chosen by the community and

not by certain individuals.

“We want transparency, a

candidate who will benefit the

c o m m u n i t y,’’ Xalisa said.

He said Lonwabo Nondyola,

the current ward councillor, had

not been resourceful to the

community in his five-year term.

Siya Qwalela had instead

worked for the benefit of the

community, he said.

“We are giving the region

until [Thursday] to reconvene

the community meeting and the

community vote.

“On Friday and Monday we

went to the ANC Calatha

provincial offices and we were

told our ward would be on the

list of those which were

experiencing problems.”

Another ward 7 resident,

Tabisa Joqo, said the incumbent

councillor provided no service

d e l ive r y.

“He does not attend any

public meetings to listen to

people’s grievances. If the

regional leadership fails to meet

our demands, voting stations

will come to a halt in all five

wards in Ezibeleni.’’

Meanwhile, ward 17 branch

secretary Lusanda Mahashe

wrote a scathing letter recently

to the ANC and other relevant

organisations to intervene in the

nomination processes.

Mahashe said he

represented “the views of the

collective who are demanding

an investigation into branch

general meetings’ [BGMs’]

outcomes and public meeting

vo t i n g ”.

The letter was addressed to

the Independent Electoral

Commission (IEC), Party Liaison

Committee (PLC), Eastern Cape

Public Service Organisation

(PSO), Sacred Ground Outreach

(SGO), Women’s League, EC

provincial premier and the Chris

Hani PEC.

The members wanted all the

selection processes to be redone

without the involvement of

regional executive committee

leaders.

Mahashe wrote that they

wanted the intervention to deal

with alleged factionalism by the

Chris Hani regional leadership

in smaller branches.

As a result, several

candidates were on a quest to

register as independent

candidates.

According to the letter, this

was fuelled by the ineffective

manner in which complaints

had been handled by the

regional and provincial

secretariat.

ANC Chris Hani regional

chairperson and CHDM mayor

Wongama Gela addressed the

concerns of the disgruntled

ward 7 residents and party

members.

He said the ward 7

grievances should be left to the

province, the authorised body to

listen to and make a

determination on the disputes.

“Everyone is allowed to

appeal against any verdict if

there is a verdict out of the

appeal hearing which was

listened to by the provincial list

committee. If one is not

satisfied, the ANC has

committed to start an

investigation into all of those

matters to be dealt with through

that exercise.”

Gela said the office of the

national general-secretary had

written to all ANC structures,

stating the party would submit

its candidate lists on time.

The ANC would also

authorise investigations because

there were a number of

allegations of manipulation of

processes, Gela said.

“At an appropriate time the

party will provide an outcome.

“As a region we are

committed to participate in that

process when called to do so.

“We will avail ourselves and

put forth responses to any

questions which will be posed

to us as a region.’’

In spite of the problems,

Gela was adamant the party was

on course for the upcoming

elections.

Last week, the regional

elections team paid branches

visits to assess their state of

readiness and to check if

structures had been established

at branch level.

Gela said they were also

checking if the local and branch

election teams had adopted

election programmes.

“We are satisfied that in

almost all sub regions, structures

have been established.”

On Monday, he said the RET

made a number of proposals

which would form part of the

regional election strategy.

“We are ready in spite of the

certain challenges which

include those who still feel

aggrieved, who feel their

disputes have not been dealt

with in the manner they

wa n t e d ,” Gela said.

A 35-year-old suspect is facing

charges of attempted murder for

allegedly shooting local business

owner Johnny Bowes outside his

business on Wednesday morning.

According to a police report,

Bowes – the owner of Superbrake in

Cathcart Road, had parked his

double cab bakkie outside his

establishment when he was

approached by a known suspect.

“It is alleged that the suspect is

renting adjacent premises from the

owner. The suspect got into the back

seat of the complainant’s double cab

bakkie. Soon after, the two males

were involved in an argument. The

suspect then produced a 9mm pistol

and fired one shot at the business

owner which left him wounded on

the left shoulder,” said police

spokesperson Capt Lariane Jonker.

She said Bowes had then made

his way into the establishment and

the suspect had followed him.

“Shortly after, the suspect was

restrained and arrested by members

from Red Guard Security,” she said.

A bystander who did not want to

be named said other eyewitnesses

said they saw a local business owner

apprehended at the scene.

When contacted by The Rep,

B ow e s ’ wife Jeanne said the matter

was under police investigation and

did not want to comment further.

The suspect would soon appear

in the magistrate’s court, Jonker said.

‘Despicable’

abuse of child

probed by

social workers

ZINTLE BOBELO

The department of social development

confirmed this week that social workers were

compiling a background investigative report for

a children’s court inquiry after the abuse of a sixyear-old

girl, allegedly by two relatives and two

neighbours in Cacadu.

The Rep reported (Tortured girl, six, fighting

for her life, September 10) that three women and

a man facing charges of kidnapping and assault

with intent to cause grievous bodily harm were

refused bail in the Lady Frere magistrate’s court

last week.

It was reported that the child was hospitalised

after being severely beaten, tied up and deprived

of food.

Provincial spokesperson Mzukisi Solani said

social development MEC Siphokazi Lusithi had

received, with great shock, a report of the

despicable act.

“MEC Lusithi instructed social workers to

contact the police for immediate action.

“When officers arrived in the house they

found a young girl tied up and her whole body

was swollen with lacerations.

“The child was urgently taken to hospital for

medical attention. Due to swift action by social

workers, the community and police, the suspect

were apprehended and denied bail.”

In a statement, Solani said the little girl had

since been discharged from hospital and was

now at “a place of safety and caring”.

“The social workers are busy with a

background investigative report in line with the

provisions of the Children’s Act,” he said.

MEC Lusithi said: “Every child has a right to

grow and flourish in a safe environment without

the threat of being harmed.

“It is contemptible when such harm is visited

upon by people who should be providing a first

line of defence to a child.

“We are grateful for the rapid action from our

officials, police and community.”

EMLM’s Mzoxolo Peter

dies after car accident

Portfolio head, admitted to hospital on Saturday, leaves ‘huge void’

ZINTLE BOBELO

The family of Enoch Mgijima

Local Municipality portfolio

head for finance and former

council speaker, Mzoxolo Peter, are

trying to come to terms with his

untimely death after he was

severely injured in a car accident

on Saturday.

“We are still shocked. It is a big

wo u n d ,” said his brother, Michael

Masonwabe Peter.

“He was a hard worker, not only

in the family. What we always

appreciated is that he worked for

his self-development, academically.

“He moved beyond the family

and became a community asset. It is

a tragic loss. His wife is trying to

cope with the situation and we

appreciate the level of support

shown to us at this

difficult time.”

The 41-year-old

father of a four-year-old

girl was involved in a

car accident on Saturday

evening between

Komani and Cacadu.

He was rushed to

Frontier Hospital where

he later succumbed to

his injuries on Sunday.

In a statement, Enoch Mgijima

Local Municipality (EMLM) mayor

Luleka Gubula said Peter would be

remembered as one of the young

and vibrant leaders in the local

m u n i c i p a l i t y.

“He had risen through political

youth formation ranks and more

was still expected from him.

“He joined Lukhanji Local

Municipality as a

representational

councillor in 2011 and

served as a portfolio

head for finance. After

the establishment of

EMLM in 2016, Peter

served as a speaker and

later moved to the

position of portfolio

head for finance.

“He leaves a huge void in EMLM

and we send our deepest

condolences to his family, relatives,

comrades and colleagues.”

As a former regional secretary of

the ANC Youth League and former

regional executive member in the

Chris Hani region, ANC regional

secretary Lusanda Sizani said Peter

was a disciplined and advanced

cadre of the movement.

“Cadre Mzo, as he was

affectionately known, was an

ardent believer in personal growth

and development through

education and acquisition of new

skills. He grew up and came of age

through the ranks and structures of

the movement. At the time of his

passing, he was still an active

member of the ANC in good

standing at ward 19 in Enoch

Mgijima sub-region.

“The ANC in the Chris Hani

region dips its banner in great

sorrow. May the beautiful soul of

cadre Mzo rest in eternal peace.”

A memorial service will be held

at the Thobi Kula Indoor Sport

Centre on Tuesday at 12pm.

Peter will be buried on Saturday,

September 25 at Tambo village.

loggerheads. “We have always had

a challenge when it came to

electricity supply. The Polar Park

and Newzone areas have never

had access to electricity so they

made connections which led to

intermittent power outages as a

result of the overload,” community

leader Elias Magwayi said.

He said a resolution to the

dispute was reached and a

decision was taken by community

members to disconnect the illegal

connections last week.

“We also came to realise that

people from Pola Park were

desperately in need of electricity

and that the decision we took, to

disconnect them, was not a

solution.

“We recently held a meeting to

further discuss a way forward.

“We came to a conclusion to

visit the municipal offices to

demand answers on the

electrification project in Pola Park.

“When the national legislature

held public participation sessions

in 2018, a project to install

electricity was implemented

hurriedly in Pola Park. Electricity

boxes were installed but electricity

is still not available,” he said. The

community members delegated 10

individuals to the technical

services office on Monday to

demand answers.

“We met with a female

municipal employee who was

aware of this electricity project.

“We stated our grievances and

as communicated with other

residents, we indicated that we

will give the municipality until

September 25 for electricity to be

installed in the Pola Park area.

“If that date comes and passes

without any movement then

residents will be left with no

choice but to take action,” he said.

In his response, Enoch Mgijima

Local Municipality spokesperson

Lonwabo Kowa said the

electrification project was 95%

complete, adding that there had

been some delays in finalising it.

“The current problems will

soon be a thing of the past. The

project stalled due to shortage of

material and municipal officials

are working hard to sort [this out]

and other issues to ensure Polar

Park is energised in the quickest

possible time,” said Kowa.

funds for her son, whom she says

she is forced to send back to the

US, his place of birth, after

struggling for years to get him

South African citizenship.

Her son was born while she was

After a breakdown in her

she moved back to SA, where she

has struggled to find permanent

work and take care of her son.

For six years, Bless has been

trying to get citizenship for her son

after the US consulate did not want

to renew his visa because it needed

the father’s approval.

“We left America because he

[the father] was abusive. I was only

was bad and I feared for my life, I

“He was only nine months old

“I feel I have been failed by our

AWARENESS CAMPAIGN: Chris Hani District Municipality

environmental health practitioners visit hawkers at their stalls to

educate them on food safety Picture: ZINTLE BOBELO

With World Environmental Health Day around

the corner, Chris Hani District Municipality

(CHDM) health practitioners embarked on an

awareness programme to educate local

hawkers r e c e n t l y.

CHDM municipal health services manager

Siya Velem said the programme was a build up

to this year’s national day, which is held on

September 26 annually.

“Aligning it to the Covid-19 pandemic, we

thought of doing a health and hygiene and

Covid-19 awareness programme for the food

hawkers within the district municipality,

especially in Enoch Mgijima, to ensure that

food preparation was safe and caused no harm

to the community.”

Velem said for hawkers to safeguard the

consumer, basic safety precautions including

hand washing facilities and ensuring that

surfaces were clean and food was covered, had

to be adhered to.

“We were educating them about basic

things like keeping their nails short to prevent

any pathogens, covering their hair including

covering their mouth when sneezing. We also

encourage vaccination and for food handlers to

consider the Covid-19 measures that have been

put in place.”

Hawker Nobuntu Njokweni, who sells tripe

at her little stall in Dunbar Street, appreciated

the programme, saying hawkers wanted to run

successful businesses that were in line with

municipal policies.

“They were here to remind us about the

importance of hygiene in our line of work.

“I hope we will all follow the necessary

procedures because what is most important is

having fully functional businesses for us to have

money to take home. If we fail to provide

decent and hygienic products, it means we do

not want to work.”

Manqunyana’s vision to provide jobs for youth

ABONGILE SOLUNDWANA

Alocal fashion designer is a step closer

to expanding his business after Chris

Hani District Municipality (CHDM)

assisted him with sewing equipment and

material this week.

Lumkile Manqunyana, 59, who runs

Leathercraft and Manufacturing, a clothing

and textile business from his Khayelitsha

home in Mlungisi, received a zigzag sewing

machine, fabric, dyes and leather on

Tu e s d ay.

The items were budgeted for in the

2019/2020 financial year, according to one of

the CHDM officials.

Manqunyana has been in the sewing

industry since 1992. ”I make leather belts,

bags, sandals, wallets, and jackets.

“I began working as a designer in 1992 in

Cape Town where I was trained by Wonder

B u s i n e s s ,” he said.

Manqunyana said the district

municipality’s integrated planning and

economic development unit had supplied

NETBALL TOURNEY

him with leather worth R8,000 in 2018.

He said the demand for his products was

growing fast and as such, he planned to

create job opportunities for youth through

his business expansion.

“I am working with my wife. I will

employ a dressmaker, a designer and

someone to make sandals and bags while I

focus on wallets.

“My ambition is to contribute to the local

e c o n o my.”

Manqunyana said the zigzag stiching

machine would be a great help as he only

had a straight stiching machine.

“I will be using the fabric to make school

uniforms, and a variety of clothing.”

The designer also makes dog buckles

and is marketing himself in retail stores for

shelf space.

He was set for an appointment with a

business in East London on Wednesday.

One of his goals is to bring his business

operation closer to the CBD. His bigger

vision is to have his own factory which will

TV doccie profiles EC’s sports heroes

Stars’ stories show rural youth that it can happen

RISING STARS

NTSIKELELO QOYO

In 2019, the SA netball team

made it to the quarterfinals of

the Netball World Cup, their

best return since 1995 when they

lost the final to Australia.

One of the standout

performances in the tournament for

SA was from Aliwal North- born

Zanele Vimbela, who has been a

constant feature for the SPAR

Proteas since 2014.

Vimbela made her mark in the

local circuit, and in 2020 got a

seasonal contract with UK-based

franchise Strathclyde.

While she puts her success

down to hard work, a strong

support base and making the most

of her opportunities, her journey

from a rural town to the top

echelons of the sport is an

inspiration to other young athletes.

Urban Villager, through funding

from the National Film and Video

Foundation (NFVF), will be

documenting the story of how

Vimbela managed to beat the odds.

She and three other athletes

from the Eastern Cape, Mfuneko

Ngam, Zintle Mpupha and

Lusapho April, will share the

challenges in their respective

codes, show where they grew up

and who inspired them, and how

they managed to crack the

international stage.

Urban Villager founder

Luyanda Peter, who also hails from

the Eastern Cape, said he had

always been intrigued by the

p r ov i n c e ’s rural sports tournaments

held around the Easter and

December holidays – especially the

cricket Amacal’eGusha ( in

Middledrift and King William’s

Tow n ) .

His early childhood was

inspired by the likes of Makhaya

Ntini, from Mdingi Village, and

Khaya Malothana from Lady

Fr e r e .

The aim of documentary is to

shine a light on athletes from

challenging backgrounds.

“With the rise in the number of

sports stars from my province, I felt

it was time for their stories to be

told. I wanted to profile athletes

from under-developed areas and

show that people can rise from the

tough conditions and lack of

facilities to be world-class.

“Having worked on the 43:03

The Wayde van Niekerk Story

documentary, I knew there was a

market for sports documentaries in

SA.

“This is a growing trend since

the Covid-19 pandemic put a stop

to live sport. TV channels were

suddenly scrambling for content to

replace the lack of live-action. I

then decided to pitch my concept

to the NFVF.

“We were then fortunate to

secure funding to produce the

film. This was exciting because the

chosen four are sports stars that

are not as popular as the usual

provincial stars such as Siya

Ko l i s i ,” said Peter.

Border cricket development

coach Ngam, from Middledrift,

grew up playing in the

Amacal’eGusha Tournament. He

played for the Proteas in the late

1990’s and early 2000’s.

Mpupha, also from

Middledrift, is the Springbok

Wo m e n ’s Sevens Rugby captain.

She started playing cricket and

represented SA at U19 level,

before later switching to rugby.

Long-distrance runner Lusapho

April is from Addo. He trained at

the University of Fort Hare and

Hogsback and has starred for SA in

two Olympics.

Don’t burden a child with a cruel name

In keeping with the theme during

Heritage Month in September, I

thought I should ponder about

names people give others or to

their children, whether theirs or

somebody else’s.

Names can also be given to nonhumans

like dogs, cats and horses as

a form of endearment.

In African society, one gets a

name or names the day or soon after

they are born.

This name, normally, is not

something that one just gets given,

there is a lot of thought behind it as

the names carry meaning.

The name either tries to pave the

way for the child as he/she traverses

through life and the hope is that the

child will follow the name and be a

decent and successful human being.

Others are named after

successful people in the family or in

the community as the parent hopes

the child will grow up and be as

good a human being as the person

they are named after.

Of course, a name performs a

IN TOUCH

Phumelele P Hlati

very basic and functional role – that

of something to identify you and

something you answer to.

Others put no significance to the

practice of giving a child a name,

hence we have names like Matlakala

(rubbish), Nontlupheko (poverty),

Ntombokwenzani (not another girl

child, what are we going to do with

another girl child!) and so on.

This is not only careless but cruel

as well because that child will go

through life having to explain to

people why they were given such a

cruel and meaningless name.

Some get given nicknames with

malicious intent to shame a person

or to mock them about how they

behave or how they look.

You will see people with

descriptive nicknames like “Fa t t y,

Shorty, Tiny, Varkie” and the names

in isiXhosa like “Mfenetyi, Mpuku

and Nomademfu” are even worse.

If you are a male and you have

gone through the circumcision ritual

you also get a symbolic name to

signify that you are now a man.

A woman who gets married also

gets given a name as their first name

is discouraged from being used

t h e r e a f t e r.

Others would get a name given

to them like Nolasti, Nofinishi or of

late the ones like Lahluma, Lathitha

or they will be referred to using their

clan name going forward like

Mamkhuma, Mamqwathi and so

on.

This practice is not taken lightly

and has a lot of significance in the

This is not only careless but cruel as well because

that child will go through life having to explain to

people why they were given such a cruel and

meaningless name.

family and it symbolises that the

bride is now fully integrated into her

new family.

As you can see, names are very

important to a person’s identity and

heritage.

Next time you get given an

opportunity to give a child a name –

think deeply about it as your action

will be permanent and you can

either help or damage that child by

the name you give them.

Please stop giving phrases as

names please – a child should not

be burdened with a task of having to

constantly explain to people what

their name means.

In Afrikaans a name falls under

a category selfstandige naamworde,

loosely translated to self-standing

name word.

Once a child has to constantly

explain to people what her name

means, then you as the person who

gave that child that name – h ave

failed.

Happy Heritage Month and

please do not forget to register to

vote – that is also part of your

heritage.

Public warned of

tender scams

ZINTLE BOBELO

Businesspeople in the Chris Hani district have been warned about

municipal tender scams that have recently been doing the rounds.

Chris Hani District Municipality (CHDM) spokesperson Bulelwa

Ganyaza said they had been made aware of a tender scam involving

fake appointments of service providers for the construction of a

water supply reticulation scheme in villages.

“The scammers are sending email messages with CHDM contact

details to authenticate this scam and deceive unsuspecting

recipients.

“The district municipality is looking into the matter and will be

reporting it to the South African Police Service for investigation,”

Ganyaza said.

He urged the public to be vigilant and not to fall victim to the

scam.

“The district follows a strict supply chain management process in

accordance with the supply chain management policy and the

Municipal Finance Management Act when procuring goods and

services.

“The business fraternity is also urged to report any suspicious

activities on the national anti-corruption hotline 0800-701-701 [toll

free] or law authorities.”

Meanwhile, Emalahleni Local Municipality spokesperson

Luthando Nqumkana issued an alert of a fraudster claiming to be a

municipal manager, who had sent emails to service providers and

prospective bidders for the awarding of tenders in exchange for

m o n e y.

“Members of the public are further reminded that tenders and

other municipal programmes are advertised, and processes are

followed according to the prescribed legislation. On tender

processes we comply with the supply chain management and other

relevant legislations,” Nqumkana said.

He added: “Soliciting bribes is a crime that can be reported to

the law enforcement agencies, whether the suspected perpetrators

are fraudsters outside or from within the institution.

“As we receive huge call volumes questioning about this, we do

not want to speculate any further other than to wait for the outcomes

of the investigation from the SAPS.

“The office of the municipal manager and information

technology are working tirelessly to trace the origins of the said

e m a i l s ,” he said.

He urged people or service providers who received such emails

to report it to the police or on the anti-corruption toll free hotline.

Getting vaccinated the best way to get

back to business, especially for SMMEs

These days it seems like

the conversation we

have as small business

owners when we check

up on each other is how our

businesses are affected by the

uncertainty caused by the

pandemic and the slow effect of

the vaccine, as well as the

ongoing conspiracy theories

around it.

I understand where everyone

is coming from when we look at

their rights or beliefs around the

vaccine, but what I do not think

everyone understands are the

ripple effects of this prolonged

pandemic on people’s wellbeing,

the economy, large

corporates – and more

especially SMMEs.

Being the daughter of a

nurse who respects the views of

medical practitioners and

scientists – I got vaccinated and

encourage others to do so too.

If I had any other alternative

that would help me outlive this

virus, I would probably consider

that option, but the problem is

there is no other choice, and it

does not look like there is going

to be one any time soon.

What does this then mean to

all of us?

In my view, it simply means

that as long as Covid is still

ravaging and killing people in

different communities and as

long as we continue to not have

a handle on it – the economy

will take longer to recover and

open up.

This essentially means that if

large corporates are not making

money during this difficult

period and are unsure about the

future, they will not be able to

invest in the development of

small businesses.

In business it is difficult to

make long-term decisions or

investments with so much

uncertainty in the air.

As small business owners we

have seen this trend this year,

where existing clients are either

pulling out or putting a pause on

service contracts with SMMEs

because they are also struggling

Empower ment

Zone

Miranda Lusiba

and not sure of the future. We

have also seen some new or

potential clients who come in

for ad-hoc or short-term projects

because they are not able to

commit to long-term

agreements.

This in essence creates

instability in the cash flow of

small businesses.

It is essential for a small

business to have stable contracts

that run over a reasonable

amount of time to be able to

plan financially.

It is difficult to plan properly

when we work on once-off

projects because unfortunately

our monthly expenses are not

once-off – they are constant.

I am encouraged by the

number of young people

between the ages of 18-34 who

are going out in large numbers

to get their jab because the

more people who are

vaccinated in the country – the

quicker we can go back to some

kind of normal.

As small businesses, we

know that when big businesses

are struggling and have to find

ways to streamline their

finances – they start cutting the

fat on the outside first; that

essentially means us consultants

or suppliers.

When corporates are not

making money, they rarely start

cutting their budgets by letting

go of their people internally –

the axe starts with us on the

outside.

As SMMEs, we understand

this because it is important for

any kind of business to try

protect its employees first at all

costs; before resorting to drastic

measures of retrenching

people.

However, as SMMEs, we

unfortunately feel the pinch of

being the ones that are taken to

the slaughter first when the

going gets tough.

Every small business that is

struggling at the moment would

like to wish this pandemic away

so that we can go back to the

vision of growing SMMEs to

their full potential.

Almost every entrepreneur

that starts a business opens it

with the intention of

contributing positively to the

economy, we want to contribute

to the creation of sustainable

employment in the country.

One of the main reasons I

started my business was to help

the country overcome its

unemployment challenges,

especially when it comes to our

youth. Looking at the recent

unemployment rate sitting at

34.4%, you will agree that

SMMEs’ contributions to the

economy and the creation of

jobs in the country is vital.

So, to those people who can,

please get vaccinated so that we

can move to a “new normal”, if

that is what we would like to

call it.

It is unfortunately the only

way we will be able to claim our

lives back and go back to

interacting with other people

freely again.

Tiger Moths anniversary

NTSIKELELO QOYO

The Tiger Moths anniversary will be the latest

to fall victim to Covid-19 as the 90th gathering

will no longer be going ahead later this month.

The event commemorating war veterans

was scheduled for next weekend but has had to

be cancelled because of lockdown regulations.

Hosted by the Queenstown Flying Club and

were going to be treated to vintage and model

and festival goers will now have to look to next

May when, it is hoped, crowds will be allowed

to attend events.

Chairperson of the Queenstown

Automobile Club, Giel Bester, said the decision

was taken in consultation with the

municipality.

“The reason for the postponement is

because of Covid restrictions. But we remain

excited for the function in May 2022.

“There will be old cars, new cars, tractors

and engines to be viewed,” he said.

Sarma meets with Dsrac to further aim

The local Sounds and Rhythms Music

Association (Sarma) wants the

community to be allowed to play a

meaningful role in the arts, culture and

heritage sector in Komani and its

surrounds.

On September 10, the association

met with the department of sport, arts &

culture’s (Dsrac) senior manager,

Mkhululi Godola.

The purpose of the meeting was to

discuss Sarma’s request to use the space

at the Queenstown Community Arts

Centre, as well as to address the matter

of having the association recognised by

the department’s local office as an

artists’ organisation, representative of its

membership’s interests.

As an association recognised by the

country’s constitution and therefore

government, the association can and

should be engaged in the formulation

and execution of cultural policy, its

founder local jazz artist Mlungisi

Gegana said.

The use of the centre and the joint

collaboration proposed would further

the association’s objectives to revive the

local music scene, and allow the

community to play a meaningful role in

the creation of an enabling environment

prioritising the involvement of women,

youth and differently-abled people in

the arts, culture and heritage sector.

However, throughout the meeting,

the reluctance on the department’s side

regarding a collaborative effort was

apparent.

Godola said any engagement with

stakeholders or structures was done

strictly through the Cultural and Creative

Industries Federation of SA (CCIFSA) and

therefore Sarma would have to affiliate

to the federation.

With regards to the association

occupying space at the arts centre,

Godola emphasised that the process

followed would be that upon Sarma’s

application being successful, a contract

to occupy the space for a period of three

months would be signed between the

department and the association.

Once the contract expired, the

opportunity to renew the contract would

be given, provided no other applicant

was waiting to occupy the space.

Representatives from CCIFSA, who

later joined the meeting, were invited by

Dsrac for the purpose of information

sharing.

The CCIFSA representatives

explained their role to Sarma and the

procedure followed by organisations

seeking to affiliate.

CCIFSA also provided relevant

information and contracts to assist

Sarma to make an informed decision.

Further communication from Dsrac

regarding the status of the association’s

application to use the arts centre is still

pending, and up to this point CCIFSA

has not made the information available

as agreed.

Gegana established Sarma to revive

the once renowned music scene in

Komani and its surrounds.

Its purpose is to unite and educate

musicians in the Chris Hani district and

beyond, and provide a platform for the

region’s talented youth to both develop

and learn about the industry.

NTSIKELELO QOYO

Ezibeleni YouTubers are using new media to tell

the stories of young people making moves in their

c o m m u n i t y.

Photo Scamto, the brainchild of photographer

Olwethu Maplanka and local musician

Khulasande Mfengu, is a fresh new documentary

series that takes a dive into the lives of youth in

fashion, business, music and other industries.

The channel seeks to show off what innovative

youngsters are doing to bring change into their

lives and the community while also inspiring

others to get up and chase their dreams.

“We want to give a platform to young people

who come from areas like Ezibeleni, where there

seems to not be many opportunities, a chance to

express themselves and their goals.

“Through their stories we believe those that

come after us can be inspired to also pursue their

p a s s i o n s ,” Mfengu said.

Two episodes have already aired exploring the

journey and vision of Maplanka on his growth

from photography to producer of the video series.

It follows the life of an up-and-coming artist

Buntubomzi Sikolo and his journey traversing the

challenges of wanting a career in music.

Mfengu, who is the host of the show, said

there has been a great reception and enthusiasm

about what the platform is trying to achieve.

“A lot of people are asking why we have gone

quiet but the truth is that the electricity challenges

in Ezibeleni have affected production of the lined

up episodes.

“We have a lot of content and many other

people yet to be interviewed,” he said.

Mfengu believes the sky is the limit for the

channel as it explores a niche that is yet to be fully

utilised, not only in Komani but in the Eastern

Cape.

“The are many stories yet to be told.

“We are only starting in Komani.

“We want to feature other youths in the

province from towns like East London and

isolated villages.

“As it grows we hope we will have partners

who will buy into the vision.

“Youth has to know they can follow their

dreams where they live,” Mfengu said.

Next episodes will feature comedian Siviwe

Lutseke and East London-based acappella group

Soul Melodies.

Nkwanca pupils

Local stars help EC team come first in the overall rankings

NTSIKELELO QOYO

Grade 11 pupils from

Chris Hani region

high schools

Nkwanca and Lingelihle,

who represented the Eastern

Cape at the national indoor

rowing championships last

weekend, helped the

province come out on top.

Members of the East

London Rowing Club along

with pupils from Mthatha and

Dalindyebo high schools

completed the provincial

team.

The pupils went head-tohead

in heats with age groups

starting from Under 13 all the

way to open races (18 years

and over).

The Eastern Cape team

excelled, coming first in the

overall ranking thanks to star

performances by Mthatha

and Nkwanca pupils. The

heats were over 2,000m.

The Chris Hani region’s

best performer was Nkwanca

pupil Sihle Qobongoshe,

who was second in the U17

competition for females.

Likhona Mgwebi and

Sithembiso Williams were

fourth in their heats, U16 and

U17 respectively.

In the boys team, Salizwe

Mpayipheli came fourth in

the U16s, and Lutho Mbili

came fourth in the open race,

followed by Zilungelelo

Ngculu in fifth spot.

Proud Nkwanca coach,

Viwe Mfaxa-Zikalala, hoped

the pupils star performances

would attract partners and

sponsors.

“They did very well. I

ROAD RUNNERS

always say to them rowing is

a very fair sport; everything

that happens on the day

depends on you.

“Fitness is our area of

focus now. Unfortunately, we

do not have endurance

machinery so they can build

muscle, which will take us to

the next level.

“Hopefully, local gyms

can allow us access to their

facilities because there is

major potential for the sport.”

All the Nkwanca pupils

will now head to East London

for the Eastern Cape outdoor

rowing championships.

They will be joined by

Kalala Tshikala, who was the

national winner in the U15s

in 2019.
