Jim Steps Down
It is with some regret that I must serve notice that this will be
my eighth and final year as treasurer of the Raider Association
and Foundation. I have served as Treasurer longer than anyone
else I can find in the records. I am finding all my other duties
are taking so much of my time that I cannot devote the time
required on Raider business. I am happy to close this year’s
book and arrange the audit; and I can train a new treasurer. I
was a little reluctant accepting this job when Chuck Sr. approached me nine years ago
because I knew it would be difficult extricating myself from the job. But extricate
myself I must. I hope you understand. Happy to stay involved but in a different role.
Jim
Thanks, Jim!
For your years of service & dedication!
A Message From the President
Well, the reunion in San Diego is over, and
I’m sure that everyone there had a great
time. I want to personally thank my friends
and fellow members who helped to put this
fine event together and I want you to know
that you made my job a lot easier. I want to pay a special
thanks to our good friends at the Clyde Thomason
Amphibious Center for entertaining us at the picnic and a well
done to Maj. Dave Handy and his Marines for making this
event very special. I also want to thank Lt. Col. Mike Brooks,
CO, 1 st MSOB for sending down some of his Marines to help
with registration. It’s nice to have some MARSOC Marines
help and attend our reunions and I know we enjoy having
these fine dedicated young Marines present. It was nice to
see old friends there and I’m sure it will be fun when we meet
again next September in Tampa.
I would also like to thank Maj General Paul E. Lefebvre, CO,
MARSOC, his wife and staff for taking the time to join us at
the reunion. I know that the General is a busy man and we are
all grateful that he took the time to come across the country
just to visit with us. I know that I enjoyed his speech and
there will be an open invitation for the General to join us again
in the future.
Jim ―Doc‖ Gleason is working hard on the next reunion and I
know he has some fine events scheduled for the 70 th
anniversary of the founding of the Marine Raiders. Let’ not let
Doc down and I hope to see as many of you as possible attend
next year. The reunion is scheduled for early September and
look for more information on the dates in this issue of the
PATCH. It’s always nice to see old friends and to make some
new ones. Come and join in on the fun. Tampa is a great
place and Doc has some very special events scheduled for our
entertainment.
As I go into my second year as your 1 st Honorary Member
President, I want you to know that I’m here to serve this
Association and with your help, next year will be as good as
last year has been. We have much to do and with your help, I
know we can do some good things that will keep this
Association on solid ground. If possible, I would like for all
of you to consider a donation to the Association and/ or the
Raider Foundation. I’m not going to be like the old country
preacher begging you for money; but, you and I know that we
cannot continue to do the good things we do without financial
support. Your support is very critical to the success of the
Association. Please do what you can to help our cause. My
best to all of you and Gung Ho.
Respectfully,
Lynn Dix, President
USMRA
Editor’s Notes
Being asked to take over as your Patch
editor and stepping into John
McCarthy’s shoes is both an honor as
well as a very intimidating. Many of
you have come forward to assist me
during this transition. I want to thank Kathi ―Patch‖ Shelor
for her great assistance during my transition and for her years
of devotion to the Patch, John, and the Association. In
addition, many thanks to Lori McCarthy, John’s daughter, for
her fantastic assistance during a very trying time for her.
I am very excited about my new responsibilities and I pledge
to you, the membership, to continue to produce a Patch that is
worthy of my predecessors and you. Changes will be taking
place. The Patch operations are being transitioned to
Alabama, new printer, and new layout /graphic artist. Starting
with this issue of the Patch you will begin to see some of the
changes I plan to make as your new editor. My intent is to
take the hard work and knowledge of our former editors and
continue to make the Patch a proud representation of who we
are.
The Association is experiencing a multitude of changes as a
―second‖ generation begins taking the reins to continue the
Raider legacy. Please be patient with us as we begin our
journey. The Association and Foundation have accomplished
so much this year; our great reunion in San Diego, the
gathering of Raider ―Relics‖ for cataloging and placement for
posterity, cleaning up the Raider Roll of Honor (you will see
the start of that in this issue), traveling to the Solomon Islands
to work on the status of our great Vouza scholarship program,
updating our web site and making it easier to navigate, next
year’s reunion in Tampa, and sadly, closing down our Raider
room display at MCRD.
Thank you one and all for your belief in me and please
continue to send me your suggestions and memories so that
we can continue to preserve our legacy. Also, if you don’t see
your contributions in the Patch please wait for the next issue—
I will include it.
square hole right away. He must have time to
2012 REUNION
TAMPA, FLORIDA
SEPT. 11-16
SEE YOU THERE!
Commandant’s Birthday Message
For ten years now, our Corps has been engaged in continuous combat operations against
those who threaten the security of America and our allies. We turned the tide in the
Anbar Province of Iraq and continue to see success today in Southwest Afghanistan.
While it has come at a cost, we have much to be proud of.
This past year in operations around the world including Humanitarian Disaster Relief, Counter-Piracy,
Theater Security cooperation, Special Operations, Counter-Insurgency and many more, you continued to
solidify our place as America’s expeditionary force in readiness. Since the Continental Congress created
two battalions of Marines 236 years ago, our legacy as an ever-ready, ever-capable, victory producing
organization remains intact.
Our rich heritage of selfless service and fidelity to nation and to one another lives on in all who currently
wear the Eagle, Globe and Anchor—those who have answered the clarion call to duty with remarkable
courage, dedication and unshakable resolve that Marines are so well known for. To all Marines—past
and present—and especially to our families. . .I extend my deep gratitude for all you have done and all
you continue to do.
As we celebrate our 236 th birthday, let us look forward to future challenges, whatever they may be, and
reaffirm our pledge to be America’s premier crisis response force; to be the first to fight. . . always ready
for the toughest and most challenging assignments.
Happy Birthday Marines and Semper Fidelis.
James F. Amos, General
U.S. Marine Corps
Commandant of the Marine Corps
Marines,
As we celebrate this day, please pause and remember the ones from
the oldest of battles to the most recent that gave the ultimate
sacrifice that created and added to the legacy of the Finest Fighting
Force this world has ever seen; the United States Marine Corps! It
is an honor to call you all my Marine Brothers and Sisters and may
God continue to bless you, your family, Our Corps, and the
Greatest Nation on this earth, the United States of America!
Semper Fidelis
Thou Shalt Not Liberate
By L.W. Hoke
It is not an unheard of thing that
men will steal, given the universal
corruption of humanity and the irradiating
toxicity of want without
work. It was with great relief that I
learned from the Marine who introduced
me to the Corps that Marines
don’t steal. But very soon I learned
the further truth that, though stealing
is definitely wrong, liberation is an
honorable thing. Therefore, the
things that I relate to you in this story
are tales of the liberation of the
things that we wanted and/or needed
or that we liberated just for the hell
of it. What spurred this activity to a
fever pitch was our officers telling
us that, in the process of carrying
out our mission, stealing was urged
as our mission was the all important
consideration. Therefore we all took
a latitudinarian interpretation of this
erroneous order and began to pillage
freely, but not from each other as this could result in fisticuffs
which none but the Irish really wanted. Just out of
boot camp and in Raider training at the infamous camp
three, we tested this command when my friend lost his
helmet and he went to the sergeant asking what could be
done about it. The sergeant answered that query by reminding
my friend that the liberation order was still in
force and he should go and liberate another helmet. This
comment brought his Irish blood up and he stole . . . that
is liberated the sergeant’s own helmet and lined up the
next day fully equipped. The sergeant, of course, had on a
new helmet that morning and on the back of it was written,
and this is a word for word quote: ―Whoever steals
this helmet has my ass to whip, large or small‖. He did
not, however contest my friend’s new helmet.
This innocent start into the evils of liberation finally
reached its climax several months later aboard the President
Polk anchored in the channel just off Espirito Santo,
New Hebrides, where we had our first South Pacific
camp. The Polk, being a President Line ship, had lost
most of the accouterments of peacetime cruising, but even
in war paint she still had a few of the vestiges of refinement.
One that immediately caught our eye was a small
piano in the ship’s recreation room. Along with many
other unusual characters in our battalion, there was a jazz
piano player of some renown and he lusted strongly after
6
the piano. The thought, the lust for music,
and the presence of a liberatable piano
occurred at the same time and plans were
laid to bring this prize to our camp. Soon
a group of honorable men were assembled,
including, I am told our Chaplain.
The operation began in the dark of the
tropic night. First the piano would have to
be removed from its moorings, carried
down the gangway, deposited aboard a
landing craft, landed on a coral beach and
carried into camp. The difficulty of this
operation never entered our heads, but
consider these factors: the distance from
the deck to the water was about seventy
feet; the gangway was narrow, steep and
wobbly; the landing craft was hard to enter
from a gangway even without a heavy
piano. The water was deep in the channel
and there were men aboard the ship on
watch all the time. Four chosen men
boarded the ship, uprooted the piano, carried
it down the gangway amid rills of
music when the keyboard was brushed, brought it into
camp and soon jazz music wafted through the night.
Aboard the ship the missing piano was soon noticed by
the intrepid Merchant Marine sailors, and I can only imagine
the fury of the Captain when this news reached him.
The Merchant Marine Sailors were a brave lot and they
suffered more casualties during the war than any of the
other services, including the Marine Corps. They did,
however, get home every few months, had very good food
and worked under union rules and pay, so we respected,
hated, and envied them at the same time. A captain on the
high seas enjoys sovereignty more powerful than any other
officer that I know of and his every whim constitutes
an order. He ordered the piano returned at once in a testy
communication with Jimmy Roosevelt, our commanding
officer, who being the President’s son had considerable
sovereignty of his own. Nevertheless, word rattled down
the chain of command till it reached us demanding that
we return the piano. Preparations were made at once to return
the piano and this was carried out in the proud,
haughty manner of Marines and the story went down in
the annals of Marine Scuttlebutt never to be forgotten, as
evidenced by this sixty year old memory.
This past August a small group
of Association Members
ventured to Guadalcanal. We
went not only to honor the
courage and sacrifices of the
Raiders and other Allied service
men who fought there so long
ago, but also to look into the status of the Vouza Fund and
how it might be improved.
Raiding Guadalcanal
USMC Raider Association Trip
July 31-August 9 th , 2011
By Louie Marsh
The delegation was headed by Chuck Meacham Sr., the
only Raider on the trip. Accompanying Chuck Sr., were
Chuck Meacham Jr., Paul Heckt, Karen Carlson Loving
and her husband John Loving, Maj John Ruffini USMC,
and Louie Marsh. We touched down at Honiara
International Airport, better known by all World War II
Pacific Theater Vets as Henderson Field.
Our tour was led by Mr. John Innes, the world’s leading
authority on this battle. Not only does John know the
history, but he knows every inch of ground and due to his
contacts with the native population, has insights no one
else does. We were lucky to have him as our guide.
Our first day of touring was wet, wet, wet. We visited
Hill 73, the American Memorial, the Japanese Memorial,
and the village school in the GIFU for an unexpected
visit. It took a few minutes, but they found the key and
gave us a tour! We gave out some things and met a few
of the kids. On the way back to the hotel the Raider
Contingent stopped off to the see the Archbishop about
the Vouza Fund.
The next morning, our first stop was that infamous sand
spit on the Tenaru where Colonel Kiyonao Ichiki’s
detachment was wiped out by the Marines; then onto
Bloody Ridge, Pagoda Hill, and Last Stand Hill. John
told us that Edson’s/Bloody Ridge is about to be declared
a national park so that it can be preserved forever. This is
great news, and very fortunate that such a historic piece of
ground will now be preserved for generations to come.
We found plenty of barbed wire and other detritus of
battle on and around the ridge. The next day we took a
small boat to Tulagi. The ride over was fun, wet and very
bumpy. I am happy to report that only two Raider Kids
got a little sea sick, everyone did fine. (I might be
tempted to divulge the names for a large enough donation
to the Vouza Fund! – Louie)
From there we walked past the old Tulagi Club, and then
on to Blue Beach. There's a school there now. We met
Principal Thomas who gave us a tour of two classrooms
where we disrupted things, but had fun. We gave out
9
0
some gifts and had a good discussion
with Principal Thomas about the needs of
the school.
Back to the boat for a look at Gavutu,
Tanambogo, and the Causeway. Then on
to the LST 342. One of the men on the
tour, Mac McKay, had served on that LST. Part of its bow
is still visible above the water line. In a very moving
moment Mac put a wreath on the deck
That evening we went to a reception at the home of Keitie
Saunders, United States Consular Agent to the Solomon
Islands. We met Annie Kwai, a bright young
Guadalcanal national who is working on her college
degree and a project to increase knowledge of WW2,
especially the part the native population played. We had
a good discussion with her, and are staying in touch.
Sunday marked the 69 th anniversary of the Marine
invasion that began the Guadalcanal Campaign. There
were several services to honor all the men who fought
here 69 years ago. We attended three memorial services.
The first memorial was at the American Memorial. Our
very own Chuck Meacham Sr. gave a great speech. (see
the speech on the next page) There were representatives
from many countries present, even a representative from
Japan laid a wreath.
Another service marked the long overdue unveiling of a
statue and memorial to the Coast Watchers and their
native scouts.
On our final day of touring we visited a school which is
near where the 2nd Raiders fought. We then drove out to
the Amtrak bone yard. There are 99 of them scattered
around, just where the US left them when we pulled out
of Guadalcanal at the end of the war. While there we met
a man whose Grandfather had served with Col. Carlson.
He had an autographed picture of Carlson given to his
Grandfather by Carlson.
Finally it was back to the school, St. Josephs’ on the
Tenaru, for a tour and a discussion of their needs. We
saw their library, their computer room (full of old
machines), classrooms, etc. We also met some of the
students!
Brigadier General Evans F. Carlson USMC(ret) and Major James
Capers Jr. USMC(ret) were among 14 members inducted into the
inaugural class of U.S. Special Operations Command's Commando Hall
of Honor at a ceremony in front of USSOCOM headquarters at MacDill
Air Force Base, Fla., Oct. 27.
Brigadier General Evans F. Carlson distinguished himself during a lifetime of
dedicated service to the United States and Special Operations Forces in a
myriad of assignments culminating as the Commanding Officer of Second
Marine Raider Battalion from February 1942 to March 1943. Brigadier
General Carlson’s diverse background in several cultures abroad prepared
him for his future and notable assignment as the Commanding Officer of the
Second Raider Battalion. Preparation for this assignment was met with
Mrs. Carlson and Daughter
combat operations on Nicaragua in 1930, in which he lead 12 Marines to
Mrs. Carlson and daughter defeat 100 bandits. As commanding officer of Second Marine Raider
Battalion, Brigadier General Carlson launched an amphibious attack on an enemy rear area installation known as Makin Island.
This attack pressured the enemy to divert forces away from Guadalcanal and focus on potentially more behind the line attacks.
This successful engagement established the foundation for what is known today as Reconnaissance and Special Operations Forces.
Speech at 69 th Anniversary Memorial
Guadalcanal
Given by Charles H. Meacham
7 August 2011
My name is Chuck Meacham. I served and fought with the
3 rd United States Marine Raider Battalion as a Browning
Automatic Rifle (BAR) man during World War II. I
served for 24 months in the South Pacific, making landings
on Bougainville, Emirau, Guam and Okinawa. On
Bougainville, I also participated in a rubber boat landing
behind enemy lines.
While I did not fight here, Guadalcanal was our staging
area, and I spent many months between campaigns at
Tassafraronga in 1943, 44, and 1945.
Guadalcanal was the Japanese ―Waterloo‖ of the Pacific
campaign in World War Two. It was here that the United
States and our valiant allies, including Great Britain,
Australia, New Zealand and the Solomon Islanders turned
the tide and went on the offense against the forces of
Imperial Japan on the air and land and sea. It took 36 long
bloody months from August 7, 1942, to August 15, 1945,
to achieve victory in the Pacific. As one of the
men who fought in that titanic
struggle, I never expected to be here
today, and can hardly believe that I
am!
It is only fitting that we gather here
on the first battlefield of that war to
honor our dead and wounded, and those who, like me, are
blessed enough to have survived. Let us also pay homage
to the widows, fatherless children and others left behind.
Their suffering approaches that of those who served on the
battlefield. The world thanked them then and we thank
them now—the heroes of Pacific Campaign and their
families.
This historic struggle began right here on this very spot 69
years ago today. A personal note: I must recognize my
Raider Brothers of the 1 st and 2 nd Raider Battalions led by
Col. Edson of Edson’s Bloody Ridge and Col. Carlson and
his Long patrol. Their accomplishments were supported
by Sgt. Maj. Vouza and his men and Coast Watchers.
Their selfless valor and loyalty are etched in Marine Corps
history.
May God bless the United States of America and may God
bless the Solomon Islands.
Semper Fidelis and Gung Ho!
WWII Marine Raider
An Oral History on CD
In the year 2000, at the age of 75, U.S. Marine Raider, Ralph
Shaeffer, was interviewed and compiled a wonderful oral history
about his life as a young man before WWII began and during the
war.
His story talks about Marine Boot Camp in San Diego, California,
and advanced training at Camp Elliott in Southern California near
Santa Barbara. As time went by, replacement battalions were being
organized for overseas deployment to New Caledonia.
The 30-day voyage across the Pacific is a compelling story. When
the ship arrived in New Caledonia, the 3 rd Raider Battalion was
asking for volunteers and he joined. After two additional months of specialized training, he was sent
into combat at Bougainville Island in the Solomons.
Included in this oral history:
The atmosphere at the time of the bombing of Pearl Harbor
Joining the U.S. Marine Corp at the Beginning of WWII
Boot Camp
Volunteering to become a Marine Raider in the South Pacific
The specialized training and experiences on New Caledonia
Weapons
Bougainville, where he was wounded
. . . and later, when he received the Purple Heart for his service
The 4-CD Set is priced at $29.95
Please send your orders or inquiries to:
Ralph Shaeffer
Please make checks payable to Ralph Shaeffer
A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the U.S. Marine Raider Association.
―The author certainly did an outstanding job in putting together Gung
Ho Marines – The Men of Carlson’s Raiders. Once you start reading
the book it is difficult to put down. For anyone interested in what the
Marines did in WWII, it is a must read. A real tribute to those who
served.‖
– Emil Wroblicky, 4 th & 6 th Marine Div., WWII
―As a fellow author I can appreciate all the work, long hours and
research you put into this excellent book. I know surviving
Raiders will agree‖
– Robert Buerlein, Military Historian
―Received Gung Ho Marines yesterday and can’t put it down. You
are a true war historian. Semper Fi.‖
―Really a great read and tells much more than just about Carlson
and his Raiders. Not much missing from this outstanding
journey through Raider history. Worth the Price‖
– James Gleason, Raider Corpsman
―Must include at least a thousand great photos with accurate and
interesting captions and text. Never seen a book qyite like it.
Tells all about the Second Marine Raider Battalion of
WWII…plus! Since the war in the Pacific I have read
everything printed about Colonel Carlson, our raid on Makin,
and our long patrol behind enemy lines on Guadalcanal. This
book outshines all the others. Loaned my copy to a bush pilot in
Alaska. Started reading at 10:00 a.m., put the book away at 4:30
the next day. That’s real interest.‖
