2021 PRESIDENT SEARCH
AZUSA PACIFIC UNIVERSITY
Azusa, California

GREETINGS
Dear Prospective Candidate,
Azusa Pacific University is pleased to announce a search for its 18th President. Thank you for your interest in exploring your potential fit for the position.
This presidency offers an exceptional opportunity to take the helm of an institution that is a leader in Christian higher education. Azusa Pacific University has put God First since 1899 and
remains committed to the vision on which it was founded—to prepare men and women to make a difference in the world for Christ.
Azusa Pacific University is unique among Christian institutions of higher education. We are a nondenominational, ecumenical university which is distinguished by its size, scope of
academic programming, embrace of open enrollment, and Carnegie R2 level of scholarly research. The institution’s rich ethnic and racial diversity, geographic location in the nation’s
second-largest metropolitan area, and nationally recognized NCAA Division II athletic program are noteworthy. Our next President has the opportunity to help define what it means to be
a preeminent institution of Christian higher education in an increasingly secular culture.
We hope you will peruse the Opportunity Profile and explore the Azusa Pacific website to gain an impression of the ongoing strengths and commitments of APU. There are challenges at
APU like many Christian and secular universities, but you will see vision, passion, energy, and commitment that will carry the campus forward under God’s leadership and guidance.
If your spiritual gifts, talents, and experience qualify you as a candidate, we invite you to review the Process of Candidacy section and follow the instructions provided. If you have questions,
please contact Laura Coverstone or Ed Poff (615.261.4623), the JobfitMatters consultants who are assisting us in this search.
We hope you will consider sharing your talents and experience to help us fulfill our vision and mission at APU. We are eager to discover who God calls to lead Azusa Pacific as its next
President.
Sincerely,
Lucie H. Moore
Presidential Search Committee Chair

university located 26 miles northeast of Los Angeles, California, offering more than 120 degrees
from bachelor’s to doctorate.
Serving more than 10,000 students from various or no faith backgrounds, Azusa Pacific University
has been putting God First since 1899. Today, APU offers 68 bachelor’s degrees, 47 master’s
degrees, 9 doctoral degrees, 18 certificates, and 9 credentials at the university’s main campus
in Azusa, seven regional locations in Southern California, and online programs. As a flagship
institution of the Council for Christian Colleges & Universities (CCCU), APU has 73,696 alumni and
1,791 dedicated faculty and staff.
APU is a rich community of scholars and leaders with more than 66% of its students coming from
ethnically diverse backgrounds, reflecting the rich diversity of Southern California. Intentionally
maintaining an open enrollment policy, Azusa Pacific welcomes all who choose to be educated in
the context of a strong, unwavering traditional Christian worldview that permeates the university and
guides its activity.
Azusa Pacific enjoys many distinctives that make it a leader in Christian higher education:
• A hallmark of APU is that its faculty and staff share a commitment first to Christ; they are
deeply relational, compassionate and caring, love APU and its students, and work to create
environments and experiences that encourage a lifelong love of learning, spiritual development,
and community engagement.
• APU is committed to diversity and is designated as a Hispanic Serving Institution (as defined
by the U.S. Department of Education), and is eligible to become an Asian American Native
American Pacific Islander-Serving Institution (AANAPI); APU is continually enhancing its
programs to support first-generation and other underserved students.
• APU is one of only two colleges and universities of the 180-member CCCU nationally
professional athletes, 14 Olympians, and 7 Olympic medals.
• Alumni ranked APU in the Top 25 Universities in the Nation according to the Journal of
Consumer Affairs and featured by Forbes.
• 16 APU faculty and 40 APU students have been awarded Fulbright Scholarships since 2003.
• APU’s affiliated online university Los Angeles Pacific University (LAPU) has enrolled 11,431
students since its launch in June 2011.
Like most institutions of higher education today, Azusa Pacific is not without challenges, and the
next President will need to be gifted and prepared accordingly. APU has endured financial trials,
and, just as APU’s recovery began in 2019-2020, the pandemic hit and slowed its momentum, but
remarkable changes and improvements also occurred.
With its diverse programs and revenue streams in undergraduate, graduate, professional and online
offerings, APU is poised for renewal under the visionary leadership of its 18th President. There is a
strong commitment and passion for APU and its mission among key members of the staff and faculty
who are looking for a dynamic and innovative President who will join them for the long-term and
lead APU with boldness and humility into the future putting God First.
The potential for APU is enormous. APU enjoys a stellar reputation for producing graduates who rise
above their peers in work ethic, knowledge, and professionalism. The university is in one of the most
demographically diverse markets in the country and is uniquely situated to have a lasting impact for
Christ in an increasingly secular culture. Significantly, the campus community has come together and
done extraordinary work over the last two years to develop a Strategic Plan which lays a foundation
for success in the future. The next President of APU will have the opportunity to lead an exceptionally
loving Christian university whose mission is to educate and disciple students to advance the work of
God in the world.
We invite you to learn more about APU, the President search, and the Process of Candidacy through
BELIEF AND IDENTITY STATEMENTS
MISSION STATEMENT
Azusa Pacific University is an evangelical Christian community of disciples and scholars who seek to
advance the work of God in the world through academic excellence in liberal arts and professional
programs of higher education that encourage students to develop a Christian perspective of truth and
life.
STATEMENT OF FAITH
As an educational institution with a Wesleyan tradition at its core, it chooses to embrace a statement
of faith that is common among many Christian traditions. APU’s Statement of Faith first appeared
in 1900, then was revisited and clarified in 1956. Applying these guiding beliefs, Daily Living
Expectations were added to offer a deeper understanding of the character of the faculty, staff, and
administration at APU.
• We believe the Bible to be the inspired, the only infallible, authoritative word of God.
• We believe that there is one God, creator of heaven and earth, eternally existent in three
persons—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
• We believe in the deity of our Lord Jesus Christ, in His virgin birth, in His sinless life, in His
miracles, in His vicarious and atoning death through His shed blood, in His bodily resurrection,
and in His ascension to the right hand of the Father, and in His personal return to power and
glory.
• We believe in the fall and consequent total moral depravity of humanity, resulting in our
exceeding sinfulness and lost estate, and necessitating our regeneration by the Holy Spirit.
• We believe in the present and continuing ministry of sanctification by the Holy Spirit by whose
infilling the believing Christian is cleansed and empowered for a life of holiness and service.
• We believe in the resurrection of both the saved and the lost; those who are saved to the
resurrection of life and those who are lost to the resurrection of damnation.
• We believe in the spiritual unity of believers in our Lord Jesus Christ.
Daily Living Expectations
The following are fundamentals held to be essential, and the university expects faculty and staff not
only to believe in them, but to practice them in daily living:
• a caring, effective love both of God and humanity
• a Christ-like unity and acceptance between believers
• a lifestyle dedicated to God’s will in society
• a growing, victorious state of mind because of the indwelling Christ
• a daily affirmation of Christ as Lord
• a willingness to serve the Lord, even when it means sacrifice
• a desire to be sensitive to the personal work of the Holy Spirit
• a working faith in God’s promises for all needs and daily life situations
• a witness for Christ without hypocrisy
• a firm, committed desire to be God’s person
FOUR CORNERSTONES
Christ – Belief in Christ is central to all that we think and do, and who we are. It is this understanding
of God’s love that informs all our pursuits: academic, service, and community. (Col. 1:15-18)
Scholarship - We are called to scholarship permeated by our Christian faith. We are committed
to teaching excellence. The liberal arts are central in the curriculum, for we are dedicated to the
education of the whole person. At the same time, we value the role of professional offerings that
prepare students for specific careers. (Prov. 4:5-9)
Community - We believe in community. We are a richly diverse people who value the worth of
each individual. Our mission is to encourage, equip, and enable each student to fulfill his or her great
potential, and in turn, encourage, equip, and enable others. (Rom. 15:5-7)
Service - Service is at the heart of our local and international outreach, missions, and service-learning
endeavors. Our students often find these experiences to be among the greatest of their lives. (Rom.
12:9-13)
HISTORY THROUGH TODAY
Azusa Pacific University began on March 3, 1899, when a group of women and men passionate about creating a place for Christian education gathered to form the Training School for Christian Workers. It
became the first Bible college on the West Coast geared toward preparing men and women for ministry and service. Meeting in a modest home in Whittier, California, and led by President Mary A. Hill, the
school grew to an enrollment of 12 in its first term.
The early years of growth saw the school relocate and change leadership several times. Then, following mergers with three Southern California colleges, the university relocated in 1946 to the city of Azusa.
The mergers and early growth of the university brought great strides, as well as great challenges, and yet the focus on the school’s core vision never wavered.
In 1990, when Richard E. Felix, Ph.D. became APU’s 15th president, he sparked a lasting transformation at Azusa Pacific University. His inspiring leadership brought the construction of 7 new buildings, a
doubling of student enrollment, and the quadrupling of graduate programs, including the university’s first doctoral programs. His reframing of the university’s values as Four Cornerstones—Christ, Scholarship,
Community, and Service—remains an integral part of APU’s identity today.
In 2000, Dr. Jon Wallace, an Azusa Pacific alumnus, became APU’s 16th president. Known for his passion, energy, and connection with the campus community, he led the university through a period of
entrepreneurial growth, focusing on providing meaningful, transformational scholarship and diverse program offerings, including additional graduate degrees, and professional and online education. Under
his leadership, the university expanded its graduate program offerings, added new study away opportunities, and completed several new buildings, including the $54 million Segerstrom Science Center.
APU welcomed its 17th president, Dr. Paul Ferguson, in June 2019 after Dr. Wallace retired due to serious health issues. Dr. Ferguson brought more than 35 years of experience in higher education as a
professor in the field of toxicology/public health and as a university administrator, including serving as president of Ball State University and president of the University of Maine. Building on APU’s legacy and
looking toward the future, Dr. Ferguson initiated Renewal, APU’s Strategic Plan for 2020-2027, anchored in the university’s mission of cultivating a vibrant culture of God First, Christ-centered academic
excellence, to successfully guide APU in the next 5 to 10 years.
For more than a century, Azusa Pacific has prepared men and women to make a difference in the world for Christ. APU’s 18th President will write the next chapter of our story.
For a timeline of APU’s history, see APU Timeline.

LOOKING AHEAD RENEWAL:
THE STRATEGIC PLAN OF AZUSA PACIFIC UNIVERSITY
Under Dr. Paul Ferguson’s leadership over the last two years, APU engaged in an extensive and inclusive
strategic planning process that resulted in a bold seven-year Renewal Strategic Plan with three
phases: Refocus, Rebuild, and Renew. A video about the Strategic Plan may be found at
Renewal, the Strategic Plan of Azusa Pacific University. A general Annual Report of Progress that
encompasses achievements related to Renewal and beyond is available here.
In 2020-21, APU Refocused on delivering the educational mission with excellence in an
unprecedented COVID environment and engaged in significant planning for right-sizing and
reorganization of institutional resources. With campus closed since March 2020 due to the
pandemic at APU’s location in Los Angeles County, faculty pivoted to an online learning model and
successfully engaged students as disciples and scholars throughout the 2020-2021 school year.
And, for the first time in several years, with great sacrifices on the part of many faculty and staff, the
administration delivered a balanced budget for the year ending June 30, 2022.
Moving into 2021-22, APU is shifting to the Rebuild phase by thoughtfully allocating existing and
new resources to strategic short- and long-term priorities. In partnership with the Board of Trustees,
the administration is focusing on specific priorities, developing a financial model to realize the vision
articulated in Renewal, and developing key measures to shepherd the university through this time of
transition to a new President and into the future. The Board of Trustees is dedicated to working with
the faculty and staff at APU to continue the momentum created by Renewal.
The new President will lead the institution forward into the Renew phase, which will fuel Azusa
Pacific’s growth into a premier Christian university for our culture and times. He or she will play a
decisive role in enhancing and implementing the Renewal vision, transforming APU into:
CHALLENGES AND PRIORITIES
In a July 2021 Survey to inform the president search process, respondents from a cross-section
of the APU community were aligned with the Board of Trustees and the President’s Cabinet as to
priorities where the next president must invest energy. Along with our most important commitment
to strengthen the spiritual development of our students, the Board and the President’s Cabinet are
focused on the following priorities to advance the mission of APU:
1. Improving the financial health of our university through completing a strategic enrollment plan,
optimizing campus-wide operations, and executing on optimal financing strategies.
2. Finalizing a 5- year financial roadmap for implementing specific Renewal initiatives, including
significant investments in our people, facilities, technology and data management, and
endowment.
3. Evaluating existing academic programs and developing new, innovative programs to respond
to the evolving student marketplace.
4. Evaluating new academic programs and pedagogic strategies to leverage opportunities for
in-person, hybrid, synchronous and asynchronous learning models to meet the changing needs
of our diverse student population.
Like other colleges and universities, particularly Christian universities in California, APU has faced
difficulties, including financial strain and undergraduate enrollment challenges. There is also the
challenge of standing firm within the historical biblical Christian tradition in a secular world. In the
face of such complexities, the next leader must project a compelling vision to foster esprit de corp
and restore morale to a community of Christ followers who are weary of financial issues and the
impact of the pandemic, and who are passionate about APU and its unique place in Christian higher
education.
APU will remain steadfast in its orthodoxy and is committed to navigating rough waters ahead under
God’s direction. The APU community seeks a faithful, decisive leader to guide the institution toward
continued financial, strategic, and spiritual renewal. The task may be difficult, but we believe God
has a leader for such a time as this.

LOCATION
the city through various ministry groups, local churches, and schools.
Founded in 1887, Azusa is located at the entrance to the San Gabriel Canyon at the base of the San Gabriel Mountains. With a population of roughly 45,000, the city spans approximately 9 square miles.
