Preface by the Department of Cultural Affairs

When Imagination Moves the World

For more than one year, the pandemic situation has fundamentally

changed the ways of life not only in Taiwan but also across the world.

We put on masks, cancel social events, study the virus as best as we can

and try to find a new relation with the world in this critical time. After

experiencing fear and desolation, we miss the city life which used to be

full of surprises, while we are also in need of spiritual food and sharing of

wisdom. The theme of the 2021 Taipei Poetry Festival: “Reboot of the

Soul”, is a demonstration of such a powerful desire.

When our masks, with their increasingly diverse colors, become the

medium to express one’s feelings and personalities, and the once quieted

cultural events gradually develop online variations, a borderless sphere

thus emerges, allowing people in distant places to join in the dialogue.

The self-discipline people exercise during the pandemic also broadens

the possibilities – it can be the culinary skills improved in the WFH days,

or the beautified interior spaces to support the life at home. Physical

bookstores provide COVID-free book boxes to connect readers off-line

in their book-loving world, and the time saved from the road is just right

for a short novel, or the soothing handwriting of the poems that reach

the souls. For citizens who enjoy art and culture, the eagerness to enrich

one’s spiritual life motivates various possibilities.

Once it restarts, we expect new functions with new horizons. This year’s

Taipei Poetry Festival features a series of exciting lectures and multidisciplinary

art and cultural events which bring poets and artists of diverse

practices together. Inspiration may transform arts as it transforms the

world. Despite all the challenges from the pandemic situation, multidirectional

communications among poetry-lovers in the city are made

possible with the wonder of imagination.

Preface by the Curators

We have seen it in so many films about a castaway protagonist arriving at

a desert island where they rebuild a small-scale civilization as a personal

journey, or the world threatened by either natural or man-made disasters

eventually survives after humans depend on their memories, will, and

wisdom to restore a new order. Indeed, the crisis can be an opportunity.

Since the end of 2019, the pandemic has prompted most of the nations

to close borders and stopped the traffic between cities, like a temporary

shutdown. As presaged in those films with their imaginative scenarios, the

world needs a restart to reflect upon the previously established order and

civilization. At a time when our faces are masked and our communication

is only channeled through the eyes, the most ancient social matters such

as how to maintain relationships and trust now face new challenges and

thus have new meanings, which interest artists, writers, and creators.

Meanwhile, classic novels such as The Plague by Albert Camus, Love

in the Time of Cholera by Gabriel Garcia Márquez, Death in Venice

by Thomas Mann, and many others attract our attention again, along

with a history of the battle against the pandemic, as a resource for us to

reexamine the past and to build the future.

As a response to the ongoing and continuously changing situation, the

2021 Taipei Poetry Festival–“ Reboot of the Soul ”emphasizes the crises

as opportunities not only in the practical aspects of policy-making, the

use of technology in public health, and the adjustment and improvement

of our lifestyle as well as the operation of a society, but also involves the

rearrangement concerning the heartshow our souls keep the warmth of

life in a world where traveling and gathering are prohibited and face-toface

encounters are only possible on/via screen. The soulware rebooted,

allowing the imagination to evolve.

During the pandemic, a different voice is expected and needed. Therefore,

the 2021 Taipei Poetry Festival also invites S. Quanan, an iconic writer

from Hong Kong, to be the city’s resident poet. Versatile in poetry,

novels, and many other genres, Quanan is the founder of various literary

8

magazines which started in the 1950s-1960s as well as a key figure to

promote modern literature in Hong Kong. He has served as the jury

member for numerous local literature awards, while his publications and

achievements thread the history of Hong Kong’s post-war literature.

With Hong Kong intellectuals of different generations moving to Taiwan

that enriches the local literary scenes and brings Taiwan and Hong Kong

even closer, we see the significance of Quanan’s role as the city’s resident

artist and look forward to his dialogue with iconic Taiwanese poets as

well as the diasporic Hong Kong scholars here.

Other programs featured by Taipei Poetry Festival this year include a

number of poetry-themed interdisciplinary artistic events and lectures

by poets, where citizens are welcomed to join in the festival to spiritually

recharge themselves with the dynamic interplay among poetry, music,

and film. The festival will close with Lin Jing-Jie’s documentary film of

the poet Wu Sheng–He’s Still Young, the most recent work from the longterm

Taiwanese literature documentation project “ The Inspired Island ”

series. The personality of Wu Sheng and the earthiness of his poetry have

rooted in the island and been nourished by the land. It is based on such a

belief that the souls can be restarted in a strange time like this.
