London Mayor Patrick Closser (center) presents a proclamation to the Sabulsky family
in recognition of September as National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. London
teenager Sean Sabulsky (second from left) is battling Ewing sarcoma. Joining him for
the proclamation presentation are his father, Sean, his mother, Barb, and his grandmother,
Laura Evans. The family’s t-shirts sport the phrase “Sean Strong” and a yellow
ribbon for childhood cancer awareness.
Raising awareness and
celebrating support
By Kristy Zurbrick
Madison Editor
“The community of London...has
really rallied around
our family from the first diagnosis
to today. One thing with cancer
is that it can make kids and
their families feel isolated. London
is really making sure we
don’t feel that way.”
–Barb Sabulsky
Earlier this month,
Mary Taylor of the
Friends of Faith Pruden
Foundation, a non-profit
that provides financial
and emotional support
to young central Ohio
oncology patients and
their families, approached
London Mayor
Patrick Closser with a
request: Would he present a proclamation to
London teenager Sean Sabulsky in recognition
of September as National Childhood
Cancer Awareness Month? Closser didn’t
hesitate to say “yes.”
“I thought this was a great idea as Sean
is a great kid and has already been able to
raise so much awareness,” Closser said.
“The Sabulskys have been advocates that
have been able to unite people for a greater
cause.”
Sean Sabulsky, whose 15th birthday is
this week, is a freshman at London High
School. He is the son of Barb and Sean
Sabulsky and a brother to Taylor and Jennifer,
both London High
School graduates.
In 2019, Sean was experiencing
pain that
would come and go on
his right side. In January
2020, an X-ray
showed a tumor. The diagnosis:
Ewing sarcoma,
a rare form of cancer.
Within a few days of the
diagnosis, a port was
placed, a bone biopsy
was done, and Sean started chemotherapy.
“Sean plays basketball, baseball and soccer.
It was really hard to just stop everything.
He was always busy in some activity
or sport. We tried to keep things as normal
as we could. COVID made it tough,” Barb
said.
Over the course of 2020, Sean went
through months of aggressive chemotherapy,
33 days of radiation, and a surgery in
May to remove three ribs where the tumor
had grown. He was on five chemotherapy
medications for the entire year. By December,
he was in remission—cancer-free.
Plans are in the works for construction
of a second roundabout and other improvements
at the I-70 and State Route 29 interchange
in West Jefferson.
On Sept. 20, West Jefferson village
council held a first reading on an agreement
with the Ohio Department of Transportation
(ODOT) regarding the project’s
design, right-of-way acquisition, and construction.
The project represents the second
phase of improvements at the interchange.
The first phase, completed about eight
years ago, saw the construction of a roundabout
on the interchange’s northwest side.
The second phase will include:
• construction of a two-lane roundabout
on the southeast side (eastbound I-
70);
• construction of a bridge adjacent to
the existing one that carries Route 29 over
I-70 to increase capacity; and
• widening of State Route 29 to four
lanes (two through lanes in each direction)
southeast of the interchange to Commerce
Parkway.
The project is expected to cost approximately
$12 million. ODOT will cover the
majority of the cost as most of the project
lies in its jurisdiction. West Jefferson is responsible
for $558,163.
EXISTING
ROUNDABOUT
Jeff Mitchell, West Jefferson’s director
of public service, said the village will explore
various funding sources to cover the
local share, including the village’s general
fund, TIF moneys, Transportation Improvement
District dollars, and Ohio Public
Works Commission funding.
According to Mitchell, design work for
the project is slated to start in 2022 and
will take about a year to complete. Construction
is scheduled to begin in April
2023.
ODOT is currently rehabilitating the
existing bridge at the interchange. This
work is not considered to be part of the upcoming
second phase work.
Council will hold a second reading on
the project agreement with ODOT at its
Oct. 4 meeting which will take place at 7
p.m. in council chambers at the village
hall. A vote on the legislation is possible
at that time. Approval is due back to
ODOT by Dec. 15.
In other action, council accepted the
Planning & Zoning Commission’s recommendation
to approve a lot split, final site
plan, and landscaping plan for a new
building at Columbus Logistics Park
West. The parcel is located along U.S.
Route 40, south of State Route 29. The developer
does not have a tenant for the
building at this time but hopes to have one
secured before construction begins early
next year, Mitchell said.
ROUNDABOUT
The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT), in conjunction with the village of
West Jefferson, is planning to make further improvements to the interchange at I-70
and State Route 29, including the addition of a second roundabout, a second bridge,
and widening of Route 29. This concept drawing from ODOT’s Office of Roadway Engineering
Services shows the existing roundabout and bridge structure, as well as
AWARENESS
Continued from page 1
“When he completed chemo, even with
the port still in his chest, he went out and
played the last few games of the basketball
season (with London’s eighth-grade team),”
Barb said.
Sean went on to play baseball with the
middle school club team this spring, holding
down the fort at second base.
In May of this year, he began experiencing
hip pain. Barb said she thought maybe,
because he had just finished the baseball
season, Sean had pulled a muscle, but an
MRI showed a tumor in his hip. A bump on
his head also turned out to be a tumor. The
cancer had returned.
“We are fighting that battle again,” Barb
said.
This time, Sean is going through a different
chemotherapy regimen and has received
radiotherapy treatment on his head and hip.
He will receive chemotherapy through
March or April of next year.
“He’s able to be active, but chemo knocks
him down,” Barb said.
The family attends various events, including
sporting events, to stay busy. And
since his diagnosis, Sean has picked up the
game of golf and has worked to convert his
baseball swing into a golf swing.
Through everything, the family has received
tremendous support, Barb said.
Sean has been learning remotely since
his diagnosis. The school district has been
“amazing with understanding,” Barb said.
Sean’s friends have been there for him, raising
money for the cause and simply being
good friends. The community at large has
been a blessing, too.
www.madisonmessengernews.com
“The community of London—not only these organizations and
foundations—but London itself has really rallied around our family
from the first diagnosis to today,” Barb said. “One thing with cancer
is that it can make kids and their families feel isolated. London is
really making sure we don’t feel that way.”
Barb said the family considers it an honor to be included in the
city’s proclamation of September as Childhood Cancer Awareness
Month in London.
“Childhood cancer doesn’t get a lot of attention,” she said. “These
proclamations help bring awareness, help kids battling the disease,
and hopefully pique interest in more funding and research.”
About childhood cancer
• Childhood cancer is the leading cause of death by disease in children.
• Forty-six children per day (16,790 per year) are diagnosed with cancer
in the U.S.
• Approximately 40,000 children are on active cancer treatment at
any given time.
• The average age of cancer diagnosis in children is 6 years old compared
to 66 years old for adult cancer diagnoses.
• Eighty percent of childhood cancer patients are diagnosed late and
with metastatic disease.
• On average, there’s been a 0.6 percent increase in childhood cancer
incidence per year since the mid-1970s resulting in an overall incidence
increase of 24 percent over the last 40 years.
• Two-thirds of childhood cancer patients will have chronic health
conditions as a result of their treatment toxicity, with one-quarter being
classified as severe or life-threatening.
• Approximately half of families dealing with childhood cancer rate
the associated financial burden due to out-of-pocket expenses as considerable
to severe.
• In the last 20 years, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved
only four new drugs to specifically treat childhood cancer.
• The National Cancer Institute recognizes the unique research
needs of childhood cancer and the associated need for increased funding
to carry this out.
• Hundreds of non-profit organizations at the local and national level
are helping children with cancer and their families cope through educational,
emotional and financial support.
• Researchers and healthcare professionals work diligently, dedicating
their expertise to treat and cure children with cancer.
West Jeff expands
Fall Festival fun
September 26, 2021 - MADISON MESSENGER - Page 5
By Kristy Zurbrick
Madison Editor
A zombie mechanical bull, haunted hayrides, and a pumpkin
carving contest—and that’s only the half of it. The village of West
Jefferson is going all out with a fall festival scheduled for 6-9 p.m.
Oct. 23 at the Community Center, 230 Cemetery Rd.
“There’s always been Trunk Or Treat. We added the bonfire last
year. This year, we’re really expanding things,” said Shelton Stanley,
West Jefferson’s special events and recreation manager.
Among the new features are a haunted house inside the community
center and haunted hayrides. Both are geared for children ages
12 and older unless accompanied by an adult. Stanley is looking for
volunteers to “scare people” who participate in these activities.
Those interested need only provide their own costume; a face
painter will be on hand to do makeup. The festival also will offer a
tamer hayride for younger children.
A pumpkin carving contest and demonstrations by a professional
pumpkin carver also are new to the event. For the contest, entrants
will bring their own pumpkins, and the public will choose the winners.
The professional carver likely will carve three creations on site.
A D.J. will spin tunes, and all ages are invited to take a turn on
the zombie mechanical bull. Mayor Ray Martin will cook up hotdogs
near the bonfire where visitors can make s’mores and enjoy chips
and drinks.
Stanley already has 26 volunteers lined up to hand out candy
during the Trunk Or Treat portion of the evening, which runs from
6 to 8 p.m. He has room for 10 more. Participants are asked to park
their cars at the community center for the two-hour event and supply
candy for youngsters who go from car to car, filling their bags
and buckets with treats. Participants are encouraged to decorate
their trunks, though it is not required. A group of four judges will
award prizes to the owners of the trunks they deem to be the best
decorated.
Due to COVID-19, Trunk Or Treat was one of the few public
events that took place in West Jefferson last year. Stanley said he
is excited to return to offering events for the community to enjoy,
expanding on old ones and adding new ones.
“I’m looking to grow each event that we have each year. I’m already
looking at next year and trying to expand on what we’ve already
done. I like to give people new things,” he said.
Stanley has served as West Jefferson’s full-time special events
and recreation manager since the start of this year.
“I am thankful for the opportunities that Mayor Ray Martin,
public service Director John Mitchell, and council give me and the
community,” he said.
Anyone who would like to set up their car for Trunk Or Treat or
volunteer as an actor for the haunted house and hayrides at the Fall
Festival can contact Shelton Stanley at sstanley@westjeffersonohio.org
or (614) 307-6543.
Competing for top honors
Anastasia Medici, a senior at Jonathan Alder High School, is
among approximately 16,000 semi-finalists in the 67th Annual National
Merit Scholarship Program. Medici has the opportunity to
continue in the competition for 7,500 scholarships worth nearly $30
million to be offered next spring.
To be considered for a Merit Scholarship award, semi-finalists
must fulfill several requirements to advance to the finalist level of
the competition. About 95 percent of the semi-finalists are expected
to attain finalist standing. Half of the finalists will win National
Merit scholarships.
High school juniors entered the 2022 National Merit Scholarship
Program by taking the 2020 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship
Qualifying Test, which served as an initial screen of program
entrants. The nationwide pool of semifinalists, representing less
than 1 percent of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest-scoring
entrants in each state.
