Giving Football Back to
Small Business
At eBay, we know small business and
football clubs used to be like chips and
gravy, two peas in a pod – a match
made in community heaven.
Ironmongers, ship workers, spring
makers and cobblers, all formed clubs
which decades later are still prospering.
But nowadays, you’d think it was all
eyewatering transfers, Super Leagues
and mega sponsors, detached from the
humble origins of our historic clubs.
That’s why eBay are proud to support
300,000 small businesses who help
power EFL clubs nationwide. We’ll be
donating our advertising space to a lot
of these businesses – on match day
hoardings, around grounds and beyond –
throughout the coming season, to ensure
they can continue to thrive in our local
communities. So, join us in giving your
support to Small Business Power, because
today, they need us more than ever.
IN PARTNERSHIP WITH
The Big Interview
CALLUM
BRITTAIN
ess than 24 hours after our defeat
against Blackpool, the players are
back at Oakwell. Those who played
are doing a light recovery session in
the gym, the others are out on the
grass being put through their paces.
There’s little time to reflect on the disappointment
at Bloomfield with the Reds’ next assignment
seeing Nottingham Forest travel to South
Yorkshire in a fixture that already carries an air of
importance given the start that both sides have
made to the campaign.
Grove Street sat down with Callum Brittain,
who has picked up from where he left off last
season with his usual tenacious and tireless
performances that make him a fan-favourite
here in South Yorkshire.
And, in true Callum-style (bet that tripped a
few of you up), he gives a damning and honest
verdict of our latest outing on the Lancashire
coast and pulled no punches when asked what
he thought went wrong against the Tangerines.
8
“It was the first half, mainly,” he began. “We
didn’t start the game well enough and I think, as
a team, we were too static; no one wanted the
ball enough, there wasn’t enough energy and we
didn’t do well enough in the final third.
“We came out in the second half and I thought
we played better, created a lot more chances
and probably should have come away with a
point, but we can’t throw away 45 minutes in a
game like that – especially in the Championship;
we’ll get punished.
“As a team, we need to be realistic and realise
that we need to beat teams like Blackpool. No
disrespect to Blackpool, but we’re a good enough
team and we’ve got good enough quality to see
off teams like that and get three points.
“The major problem at this point in time is
we’re not scoring goals and we’re not winning
matches; we’ve drawn too many and lost the
rest, except one. We need to be honest and
realistic with each other and realise that we need
to start putting our chances away and stop
throwing away half a game.”
As Callum alluded to, Barnsley have been
creating opportunities in their recent encounters
– it’s just been a case of finding the back of the
net. Frustrating outings against Luton Town,
Birmingham City, Blackburn Rovers and, latterly,
Blackpool have yielded just two points, although
GROVE STREET | BARNSLEY FC OFFICIAL PROGRAMME
the Reds will feel they could have earned more
for their endeavours.
The 23-year-old looks back at some of the
past performances and insists that he and his
teammates need to be more clinical in the final
third and believes that, once it happens, the
goals and points will start to flow.
ISSUE FIVE | BARNSLEY VS NOTTINGHAM FOREST
9
“We deserved to win the Blackburn game,”
discussed Cal. “We were dominant, played nice
football, got in the final third a lot and we had
chances but, again, we didn’t punish them and
it’s been the story of our season so far.
“We need to start doing some more final third
stuff in training and we need to start taking
ISSUE FIVE | BARNSLEY VS NOTTINGHAM FOREST
our chances. But it’s about confidence and we
need to start taking our chances. Football is a
massive confidence game and, once one goes in,
hopefully they’ll all start going in.
“It’s just confidence. I think, as players, we need
to stick together and get around each other and
bring that confidence back within the group. I think
GROVE STREET | BARNSLEY FC OFFICIAL PROGRAMME
10
the fans can be a massive part of that, especially
coming into the game on Wednesday; if they stick
with us and we stick together, it’ll come.
“We’ve got enough quality in the squad and we’ll
start scoring goals and winning games.”
Despite not picking up as many points as we
would have liked, displays at home have given
GROVE STREET | BARNSLEY FC OFFICIAL PROGRAMME
us reason to be optimistic that we can turn our
fortunes around. Victory over Coventry City was
an indication of the Reds’ battling spirit, while the
defeat against Luton and draw with Blackburn
are encounters where we should have claimed
the spoils.
The next two fixtures are at Oakwell, and Callum
is hoping that the Barnsley faithful can provide a
ISSUE FIVE | BARNSLEY VS NOTTINGHAM FOREST
“It’s a big opportunity to really get some
confidence in the squad against a side that are
also struggling at the moment and, yeah, we
need to win. It’s at home and we need to start
putting our chances away and we need to win a
game – it’s as simple as that.
“You don’t get out of a bad situation by not
winning games, so it lies with that.
“A win does everything; it boosts morale in the
changing room, lifts hope, lifts the fans and
creates positivity around the place. A win on
Wednesday would do the place the world of
good.”
It would be a huge psychological boost for the
Reds to claim three points and move further clear
of the drop zone – even if we are still in the early
stages of the season.
On the flipside, however, defeat could be
particularly damaging for morale, but Cal asserts
that no one in the changing room is thinking like
that and that they are solely concentrating on
securing a priceless win.
“I like to use the terminology of hitting a nail into
the ground,” he discussed. “Every time you hit it,
it goes further and further in and every time you
lose, it hurts more. But we don’t need to think
like that; we need to stick together as a club and
as players and we need to keep our confidence
between us.
11
“We all know how good the players are in the
squad and I personally believe in every single
one of the players that walks out on that pitch.
I know that we can get a result on Wednesday
and so can everyone else.
“We all need to stick together – fans, staff and
players – to turn results around.”
Our clash with Birmingham at the end of August
bore plenty of significance for Callum as he
made his 50th Barnsley appearance – quite
an achievement considering he didn’t arrive at
Oakwell until 10 October 2020.
cauldron of noise to help him and his teammates
over the line, starting with the visit of Forest.
“When the fans are here and we’re playing well,
confidence grows within the squad – we keep
the ball better and create more chances,” he
continued. “But the team really needs to step up
now; our defending hasn’t been good enough, so
we need to stand up with our performances.
ISSUE FIVE | BARNSLEY VS NOTTINGHAM FOREST
Since making his debut at Stoke City 11 days
later, the former MK Dons man has been virtually
ever-present for Barnsley and he has established
himself as one of our key players with a number
of outstanding displays in that time.
“I’ve loved every minute,” he beamed. “It came
round really quickly and I played a lot of games
in a very short space of time, but I’ve loved
GROVE STREET | BARNSLEY FC OFFICIAL PROGRAMME
every minute. I’ve loved the fans being back this
year, I obviously loved last year when we were
competitive – getting to the play-offs was a real
career highlight for me.
“I just want to kick on again now, this season.
“As soon as I came here, I said that I was good
enough to play at this level and I’ll fight for my
place in the team. Obviously, with Jordan being
in and out, it’s helped me massively because he’s
a good player.
“But I think we’ve seen, when he has come on, it’s
been more left side. I’d like to keep my confidence
and keep playing, and I think I’m playing well
enough and have played well enough to really
solidify my place in the team.”
As Callum just mentioned, his fellow full-back,
Jordan Williams, has been absent for long spells
with persistent, niggling injuries over the past
year – and he’s not the only Barnsley player to
have been impacted, particularly this season.
12
The Reds have been without several of their
first team contingency in the opening weeks of
the campaign, with the majority now gradually
working their way back to full fitness.
One big miss, however, is Carlton Morris, who
limped out of our victory against Coventry City
with a knee injury, and Callum can’t emphasise
enough his importance to the team.
“He’s a big character in the changing room, he’s
a big miss on the pitch and he’s a big moment
player in games,” lauded Britts. “He creates
something out of nothing and that’s what we
need in our squad at the moment.
“He’s a big presence, he’ll take someone on, he’ll
get on the ball, create chances and also puts
them away, so it’s a big miss for us and a big
miss in the changing room.
“Obviously, it’s quite a young squad and he’s one
of the more senior players, so he’s a big miss and
I can’t wait for him to get back on the pitch.”
Despite being sidelined, though, our powerful
striker has remained in an upbeat mood around
the camp and can often be heard laughing and
joking whilst in the physio room.
It is an indication of his larger-than-life character
and Callum is looking forward to seeing him
back in a red shirt once more.
GROVE STREET | BARNSLEY FC OFFICIAL PROGRAMME
“That’s just the guy Carlton Morris is; I’ve known
him for a while, now, and he’s one of my best
mates,” he smiled. “He’s one of the most positive,
nicest people I’ve ever met. He doesn’t let much
affect him and it’s just massive credit to him.
“He’s helped me a lot in terms of being positive
and keeping my head at times and he’s a
ISSUE FIVE | BARNSLEY VS NOTTINGHAM FOREST
13
massive player in this team and a big player in
our squad to get back on the pitch.”
Because of injuries, Cal was utilised in a central
midfield role against Stoke and Blackburn. We
have often seen him coming inside this season
when the Reds have possession to add more
numbers in the middle.
ISSUE FIVE | BARNSLEY VS NOTTINGHAM FOREST
It is a position where he feels comfortable
operating and he has the attributes to do a more
than decent job for the team.
“I think I’ve played every single position except
for centre of the back three,” laughed Callum. “I
think every position is quite normal for me; I’d like
to say I’m quite versatile – every manager I’ve
GROVE STREET | BARNSLEY FC OFFICIAL PROGRAMME
14
played under has put me in central midfield, so it
wasn’t a shock to me.
“I do think that, when I’m in there, I’m in there to
do a job and run box-to-box, and it was nice to
get back in there.”
One thing that has still eluded him in his Barnsley
career so far is that all-important first goal – but
it’s not for a lack of trying from our energetic
wing-back.
GROVE STREET | BARNSLEY FC OFFICIAL PROGRAMME
Cal has come close to getting off the mark for the
Reds on several occasions, and he is confident
that it will come eventually if he continues to
persevere.
“I like to get on the ball, make things happen, play
forward and get crosses in, and the one thing that
hasn’t happened for me yet is a goal, but it’ll come;
I’m being patient with it,” he insisted. “At the end of
the day, it’s not entirely my job to score so, as much
as I’m dying to score, I’m being patient with it.
ISSUE FIVE | BARNSLEY VS NOTTINGHAM FOREST
final third and definitely buck up my ideas in
front of goal.”
One thing that supporters will have noticed
with Britts is his magnificent technical ability on
the ball – the way he jinks beyond opposition
players with deft, intricate skills and retains
possession with ease.
With such an array of talent, a lot of it is natural
to our flying wing-back, who oozes confidence
when backed into a corner.
“It’s one of the best parts of my game,” admitted
Callum. “I’ve worked on it since I was young;
it’s always been a big asset for me and I’m
comfortable on the ball in all areas. I play off
instinct and I’m confident in my own ability that I
can get out of certain situations.
“I think it’s just composure. If I bring the same
composure and confidence that I do when I’m
in tight situations or when I’m on the ball into
the final third, when I know I’ve got a chance
to score, then I can score a lot more goals and
contribute a lot more.”
15
A major part of Cal’s role under Markus Schopp
this season is the get into more advanced
positions in the final third – you will often see him
and the opposite wing-back pushing higher up
the pitch when Barnsley are in possession.
Covering so much ground can be draining on the
legs – particularly when fixtures are coming thick
and fast (as they are at the moment), but it’s a
side of the game that he enjoys.
“Last season we were more structured in terms of
a back five – he only liked one of the wing-backs
going forward, but we’re told to get more players
in the box,” said Callum.
“I will score this season; it’s going to happen. Last
season is the only season where I’ve not scored,
so it’s not the norm for me to not score. But it’s a
confidence thing; when I’m in front of goal I’m
maybe thinking about it a bit more, whereas I
maybe just need to hit it and play off instincts a
bit more.
“But, like I said, it’s not entirely my job to score –
obviously it’d be nice if I could contribute in that
way, but I need to play off instincts more in the
ISSUE FIVE | BARNSLEY VS NOTTINGHAM FOREST
“Obviously, chances and goals are slim at the
moment, so the more players you get in the
box, the more chances you’re going to get. It’s
definitely a tactic and something I’ve been told
to do and, as a wing-back, your job is to get into
both boxes – defend one box and try to attack
the other.
“It’s a tough role, but so are a lot of positions in
football. It’s our job, at the end of the day, to be fit
and be able to play in your position. It’s a tough
stint, but it’s required.”
The Head Coach
MARKUS
SCHOPP
Welcome back to Oakwell, Reds,
16
Tonight is a big opportunity to show a good reaction from the
disappointment of last weekend away at Blackpool. I was unhappy
with our performance in the first 45 minutes of that game where
we lacked the intensity that is needed as a bare minimum in this
division. We need to do more in our duels, to enforce ourselves on the
opposition. Too often, we were second best in the fight and while it was
an improved display in the second half, the damage had already been
done.
It is unbelievable that nearly 3,000 of our supporters came to back
us on the day. We feel like we let them down on Saturday. But it’s all
about using that feeling as extra motivation when we take on our new
challenge this week, with back-to-back home fixtures, starting tonight
against Nottingham Forest.
I would like to give a warm welcome to new Forest coach, Steve
Cooper, his staff and players, but once kick-off arrives it’s all about the
three points. I am sure that our visitors will be in improved spirits after
taking four points from their most recent two matches, but they’ve had
their own struggles at the start of this campaign and it is up to us take
advantage of their weaknesses and make it a winning start to a big
week for us.
Unfortunately, I will be sat in the Oakwell dugout without my assistants
for the next couple of games. The FA have punished Tonda Eckert and
Joseph Laumann for the incident that occurred away at Stoke City
recently and we must respect the decision and make sure that our
behaviour as coaching staff is appropriate at all times in the future.
We’ve had a good few days on the training ground since Blackpool
and I am confident that the guys will show their true face this evening,
but they will need your continued support from the stands. Together,
we will only become stronger.
Enjoy the game!
The Chief Executive
KHALED
EL-AHMAD
Good evening,
Here we are once more, back at Oakwell
for another Sky Bet Championship fixture.
Taking in last Saturday’s game against
Blackburn Rovers, I can honestly see
why the fans love this football club and it
further cemented my understanding as to
why players and staff want to be here.
Prior to kick-off, I was presented to a
number of partners and supporters based
in the East Stand hospitality suites. As
you know, our friends like Lee Jones,
Chris Beckett and Simon Dennis play an
important role in this club and it was a
pleasure to meet so many of them for the
first time. I look forward to meeting more
of our partners as the season progresses.
Due to a printing deadline, I write
these notes on Monday 27 September,
prior to my first official engagement
with supporters but I must state that I
am very much looking forward to this
introduction. I am aware that our Club’s
direct engagement with supporters is
a priority and where we as a Club can
help, we will endeavor to. Looking to the
future, I will welcome your feedback whilst
simultaneously providing insight into how
and why certain decisions are made.
Face-to-face meetings will be a regular
occurrence, so I look forward to meeting
you in the near future.
Honesty and transparency is soft
value that is imperative to me, both
professionally and personally. I take pride
in being a good person and I surround
myself with good people. Together, with
all of the staff at Barnsley FC, we will work
together, both on and off the field, to lay
the foundations for our coming strategies
and actions. We believe in the direction
we are heading and despite adversity, we
will remain united and continue moving
forward.
You may notice the LED advertising boards
that are now in situ around the pitch
perimeter this evening and I’m sure you’ll
agree when I state that they are certainly
an improvement to the stadium. I have
been impressed with many departments
since arriving and I would like to thank all
involved for making this happen, especially
Lee Wassell, Nicolas De Montauzon and
Rob Zuk.
Like 3,000 Reds, I was at Blackpool last
week. The level of support was tremendous
and, like Markus said in his post-match
interviews, I wish we could have given you
more. We still have six points to play for
this week and that provides us with two
opportunities to compete, get favorable
results, to build momentum and, moving
into the international break, finish this block
of fixtures on a high.
Knowing that you will be behind the team
from the first minute until the last can
make the difference and your continued
support in a busy fixture programme is
appreciated.
Enjoy tonight’s game and I look forward to
seeing you back at Oakwell on Saturday.
All the best,
22
t’s been a nightmare start to the 21/22
campaign for the men from the City
Ground. A disastrous spell under Chris
Hughton was finally ended earlier this
month, with the former promotion-winning
boss at this level replaced by a man in Steve
Cooper who has presided over back-to-back
play-off campaigns with his previous club,
Swansea City. But we’ll talk about the new
head coach in more depth later on in Grove
Street.
Seven defeats and a draw had Forest rooted
to the foot of the Sky Bet Championship table
before the club wielded the axe on Hughton.
The Tricky Trees then immediately responded by
beating Huddersfield Town away from home,
before last weekend’s 1-1 home draw against
Millwall. Improved form then, and as many
points from their last two games than the Reds
have managed now in their last six.
This is still early days in the new season, but
with Forest occupying the last relegation place
at present, and trailing the Reds by three points,
it looks a big game for both clubs despite taking
place in late September.
It’s difficult to understand the Nottingham club’s
GROVE STREET | BARNSLEY FC OFFICIAL PROGRAMME
struggles looking from the outside. A squad that
looks well-stocked on talent, with a plethora of
proven Championship-level performers to call
upon, you’d imagine it’s merely a matter of time
before they start moving up the table.
The aforementioned know-how of frontmen
Lyle Taylor and Lewis Grabban is ably aided by
ISSUE FIVE | BARNSLEY VS NOTTINGHAM FOREST
23
the emerging youngsters behind them in the
shape of Alex Mighten and Brennan Johnson.
The latter’s father once lit up this division a
couple of decades ago and now the 20-yearold
midfielder - recently capped by Wales - is
making a name for himself, particularly having
scored a late equaliser against Forest’s big rivals,
Derby County.
The Reds had the edge in this fixture last season,
with two victories at Oakwell (league and cup)
whilst the City Ground encounter ended in a
stalemate. Indeed, it’s five years since we last
tasted defeat against Forest on home soil;
beaten 5-2 live on Sky Sports in November of
2016.
The Forest Head Coach
STEVE COOPER
ack in the dugout of a Sky Bet
Championship club after a very short
break, Steve Cooper was appointed
Head Coach of Nottingham Forest on
September 21, replacing the departed Chris
Hughton who had failed to lead Forest to a
single victory in this new campaign.
Cooper was manager of Swansea City for the
last two years, guiding them to back-to-back
play-off campaigns, which were both ultimately
unsuccessful. Of course, it was he and his Swans
outfit who got the better of Valérien Ismaël’s
Reds at the semi-final stage of that competition
just a few months ago now.
The 41-year-old coach, prior to his stint in South
Wales was an academy manager at Liverpool
before moving into the England national
team setup, where he helped the U17’s to the
European Championship final in 2017, beaten
by Spain on penalties before going one better
at the 2017 FIFA U17 World Cup, where England
this time triumphed against the Spanish to be
crowned champions.
GROVE STREET | BARNSLEY FC OFFICIAL PROGRAMME
Renowned for his work with younger players
and his progressive ideas in terms of coaching,
Cooper was lauded for his work at Swansea
over the last couple of years whose budgets
were cut drastically following their drop from
the top-flight. They parted company in July on
mutual terms, and his name was often dropped
into conversations about a variety of potential
vacancies in the summer.
His task at the City Ground in the short-term
appears to be a simple one - to win football
matches. The two-time champions of Europe
have been outside the Premier League for over
two decades now, and are currently sat in the
bottom three of the table after their disastrous
start to the 21/22 campaign, with one of the few
records worse than the Reds as we head into
our tenth fixture of the season.
The point picked up in his first match in charge
against Millwall at the weekend in front of the
home support makes it four points from the last
six, and Cooper will be hoping to get his first
Forest victory tonight at Oakwell.
OPPOSITION CORNER
by Matt Whiley
Matt Freeman is a lifelong Forest supporter, and regularly attends games at the City Ground.
We spoke to him to get the lowdown on our opponents this evening.
It’s probably fair to say it’s been a tough
start for Forest, but what are your
thoughts on the season so far?
I think I’m more optimistic now than
I was a week ago. It’s probably
inevitable, isn’t it, that when you get
a new manager you start to naturally
feel a bit more optimistic whether or
not you actually have cause to, even
if we have been through this every 12
months for the past 15 or 20 years!
GROVE STREET | BARNSLEY FC OFFICIAL PROGRAMME
That said, it does feel like a logical kind
of appointment where we’ve looked
to bring younger players in and
now we have a manager who
has previous experience with
developing youth, from his time
with England’s under 17s and at
Swansea City. It’s still going to
be a slog, to get out of the lower
reaches of the table, but I am
feeling a little bit more positive than
I was.
ISSUE FIVE | BARNSLEY VS NOTTINGHAM FOREST
Do you think that Steve Cooper is the best
appointment the club could have made?
Yes, for the squad we’ve got, I do. I know names
like Howe and Wilder get knocked about, and
obviously they’re very good managers and have
worked wonders with different clubs, but I feel
like every managerial appointment is a risk –
doing a good job at one club doesn’t make it a
certainty that you’ll do the same at another.
There is a sense, though, that with the kind of
team we have at the moment, that Cooper
feels like the kind of guy that could get the job
done. Of course, we got our new Chief Executive
in from Barnsley, who had a great campaign
last time out through bringing in less-heralded
younger players, so if we’re going to follow a
blueprint, we might as well follow one that’s had
some success!
Was there predominantly a focus on bringing in
younger players in recent windows?
Yes, although it has been mostly loans and
ISSUE FIVE | BARNSLEY VS NOTTINGHAM FOREST
quite last-minute stuff this time around. It’s
difficult to say, really, because I wasn’t massively
overwhelmed by the names we were bringing in
– when you have to look on Wikipedia because
you’ve never heard of your deadline day signing,
it’s not hugely exciting!
Equally, all of that said, there were a few arrivals
before last season, when we brought in people
like Jack Colback and Harry Arter, which felt a
bit more exciting, bringing in proven performers.
Of course, that didn’t really go to plan, with Arter
now on loan at Charlton Athletic and Colback
getting a game every now and again but not
really being the player that he was in his first
spell with us.
The point is, that you can get seduced sometimes
by bigger names coming in, and maybe that’s
not the approach that we’ve needed to take.
I’ve not seen many of these new guys even
kick a football yet as they’ve hardly played, but
I’m more than happy to give them a shot as,
ultimately, some fresh impetus could do the trick.
Who are the players in particular who are
worth looking out for?
Brennan Johnson is the big one at the moment,
with some of the more impressive goals – of the
very few we’ve scored so far this season – coming
as a result of him flying down the wing and
taking players on. He did really well at Lincoln
City last season, and with David Johnson being
one of my first ever favourite Forest players, I’m
always going to want his son to do well.
I think, besides the signings we’ve made this
summer, keeping hold of Johnson and Joe
Worrall was as much of an achievement when
Brentford and Burnley were sniffing around the
pair of them, respectively.
What do you think this squad can achieve
this season, now that Steve Cooper is in the
dugout?
I think that, perhaps within a couple of years,
we could be looking at the higher reaches of the
table. I think we’ve left ourselves just a little bit too
much work to do to make it there this season.
Really, I’d like us not to be panicking about
relegation, and be solid when the New Year is
rolling around. I reckon we'll be okay ultimately
this year, but, given that Lewis Grabban can't go
on forever, and Lyle Taylor's returns have been
mixed, we will need to sign, or bring through, a
younger, more dynamic out-and-out striker to
seriously threaten in the next couple of years.
MANAGING TO SUCCEED
NOTTINGHAM FOREST
Football historian LEIGH EDWARDS profiles ten leading Nottingham Forest managers
28
HARRY HALLAM
Secretary-manager Harry Hallam plotted
Nottingham Forest's 1898 FA Cup final triumph.
He was a committee member and worked
alongside Harry Radford as Forest entered the
Football League and were FA Cup semi-finalists
in 1892. Succeeding him in charge in July 1897, he
guided Forest to the FA Cup semi-finals again in
1900, when they lost to eventual winners Bury in a
replay. He arranged the club's first-ever overseas
tour to Argentina and Uruguay in 1905, then led
Forest straight back to the top-flight as Second
Division champions in 1906-07 and remained
secretary-manager until leaving in July 1909.
BOB MARSTERS
Secretary-manager Bob Marsters guided
Nottingham Forest to the Second Division title in
1921-22. He joined the club as assistant-secretary
to Harry Hallam in July 1905, then was secretary
under Teddy Earp, becoming secretary-manager
in July 1912. The financial state of the club was
critical at the time but he made several shrewd
signings, persuading legendary goalkeeper Sam
Hardy to return to League football and help Forest
back into the top-flight. Assisted by chairman
Bob Cobbin, he plotted Victory Cup success and
remained in charge at the City Ground until July
1925. He later became a publican in Nottingham.
BILLY WALKER
Long-serving manager Billy Walker plotted
Nottingham Forest's 1959 FA Cup final success.
A former England international inside-left, he
starred as Aston Villa won the FA Cup in 1920 and
were finalists again in 1924. He became Sheffield
Wednesday's boss in December 1933 and guided
them to FA Cup final glory in 1935, then plotted
Chelmsford's 1938-39 FA Cup run. Appointed
Forest's manager in March 1939, he led them to
the Third Division (South) title in 1950-51 and back
GROVE STREET | BARNSLEY FC OFFICIAL PROGRAMME
to the top-flight in 1956-57, remaining in charge
until resigning in July 1960. He was a committee
member until his death in November 1964.
ANDY BEATTIE
Former Scotland international full-back Andy
Beattie plotted Nottingham Forest's 1962-63 FA Cup
run. He played for Preston in two consecutive FA
Cup finals, including their 1938 Wembley triumph,
becoming Barrow's manager in March 1947. After
a spell in charge of Stockport County, he guided
Huddersfield Town back to the top-flight at the first
attempt in 1952-53, then managed Carlisle United
and had two stints as Scotland national team boss.
He was manager of Forest from September 1960
until July 1963, then coached at Plymouth Argyle,
Wolves, Notts County and Sheffield United. He died
in September 1983.
JOHNNY CAREY
Former Irish international full-back Johnny
Carey managed Nottingham Forest to League
Championship runners-up in 1966-67. He turned
professional with Manchester United in November
1936, captaining their 1948 FA Cup final triumph and
1951-52 League Championship success. Appointed
Blackburn Rovers' boss in August 1953, he plotted
promotion in 1957-58, then managed Everton and
led Leyton Orient to the top-flight in 1961-62. He
took charge of Forest in July 1963 and also led
them to the FA Cup semi-finals in 1966-67. Rejoining
Blackburn as manager, he scouted for Manchester
United and died in August 1995.
BRIAN CLOUGH
Legendary manager Brian Clough took
Nottingham Forest to two consecutive European
Cup final triumphs. A former England international
centre-forward with Middlesbrough and
Sunderland, he became Hartlepool United's boss
in October 1965. He managed Derby County to
ISSUE FIVE | BARNSLEY VS NOTTINGHAM FOREST
the League Championship in 1971-72, then was
briefly in charge of Brighton and Leeds United
before becoming Forest's manager in January
1975. Resuming his partnership with Peter Taylor, he
plotted their 1977-78 League Championship success
and four League Cup final triumphs before retiring
in May 1993. He died in September 2004.
FRANK CLARK
Frank Clark guided Nottingham Forest back to the
top-flight at the first attempt in 1993-94. A former
left-back, he helped Newcastle United to win the
Second Division title in 1964-65 and Fairs Cup in
1969. He moved to Forest in May 1975 and featured
in their 1977-78 League Championship success, 1979
European Cup final triumph and two consecutive
League Cup final wins. After assisting Ken Knighton
at Sunderland and Orient, he managed the O's
1988-89 promotion success and rejoined Forest as
manager from May 1993 until December 1995. He
then managed Manchester City, since having a
spell back at Forest as chairman.
Forest to promotion in 2007-08. He impressed
with Mansfield Town prior to joining Swindon
Town in July 1985, starring as they soared to
the top-flight, then appeared for Tottenham
Hotspur, Aston Villa, Forest and Notts County.
He became Northampton Town’s boss in
October 2003 and plotted promotion in 2005-06.
Rejoining Forest as manager in June 2006, he
led them to the League One play-offs in 2006-07
but left in January 2009. He has since had spells
managing Hibernian and Cambridge United,
also assisting Chris Hughton at various clubs.
DAVE BASSETT
Dave Bassett managed Nottingham Forest to the
First Division title in 1997-98. An England Amateur
midfielder, he helped Walton & Hersham win the
Amateur Cup in 1973 and followed Allen
Batsford to Wimbledon in July 1974. He
became manager in January 1981 and
plotted the Crazy Gang's meteoric rise
to the top-flight before taking charge of
Watford in May 1987. Guiding Sheffield
United to promotion, he managed
Crystal Palace, then Forest from February
1997 (initially as general manager) until
January 1999. He steered Barnsley to the
First Division play-off final in 1999-2000,
then managed Leicester City.
29
PAUL HART
Paul Hart guided Nottingham Forest to
the First Division play-offs in 2002-03. A
son of Johnny Hart, the central defender
turned professional with Stockport in
September 1970 and starred in their 1972-
73 League Cup run. Joining Blackpool in
June 1973, he moved via Leeds United
to Forest in May 1983 and scored once
in 70 League games before joining Sheffield
Wednesday in August 1985, then played for
Birmingham and Notts County. He managed
Chesterfield and was in charge of Forest from
July 2001 until February 2004, then was boss of
Barnsley, Rushden & Diamonds, Portsmouth,
QPR, Crystal Palace and Swindon.
Ais for Alien.
Do you believe?
I do. I’ve never seen
anything, but it’s way too big for
it to be just us.
Bis for Baller. Who is the best you’ve played
with?
I trained with Emi Buendía; he was very
impressive.
Cis for Cheese. What’s
your favourite kind?
Mozzarella.
Dis for Dessert. What’s your
choice of sweet?
It’s got to be cheesecake –
strawberry cheesecake.
Eis for Eat. What’s your favourite meal?
I would say an oven cooked pizza.
Fis for Five. What is your all-time five-a-side
team?
In goal, I’m gonna have to go with someone
who’s good with their feet, so I’ll say Ederson. A
back two of Ramos and a nippy little full-back –
Dani Alves! In the middle, I’ll have Zidane and up
top Ronaldo; the Brazilian one.
Gis for Guests. Which three people would you
invite to a dinner party?
Just because of the first question, Buzz Aldrin,
to see if he’s lying or not. Maradona; I always
heard he was a good character. And Michael
Jackson.
His for Hero. What
would your superhero
power be?
It’d be between strength and invisibility; I’ll
say strength.
Iis for Island. What three items would
you want on a desert island?
I’ll say a big power bank, a music player so I
can listen to music and not go berserk and a
knife so I can stay alive.
Jis for Joke. Tell us one.
To the person who stole my
place in the queue, I’m after you
Kis for Karaoke. What’s your go-to song?
say Valerie by Amy Winehouse. It’s a good one
if you can’t really sing.
Lis for Literature. What was
the last book you read?
I read one called Artificial Intelligence. It’s about
the development of Tesla’s and phones and
robots and stuff like that; it’s becoming a big
thing now.
Mis for Music. Who’s your
favourite artist?
All-time or right now? All-time, I’ve got to go MJ.
Nis for Nickname.
William.
Ois for Opposition.
Who is the best you’ve played against?
I’ll go for Buendía again because I’ve played
against him, too.
Pis for Profession. If you weren’t a
footballer, what would you do?
I struggle to see myself as a student because
I’m quite a free mind, so I’d struggle being in
class all day. I think I’d have started my own
business and done an unnatural route.
Qis for Quarantine. Did you do anything
new in lockdown?
We’ve been through a few, but it was in the last
one. Everything blew up a little bit and most of
the stuff was closed, but there was a shooting
range that had just opened up. Most of the stuff I
used to do was closed, so I booked myself for the
shooting range, which I’d never done before, and
it was really good. It’s something that you’d never
think of doing when you’re busy all day, but in
lockdown I was thinking what I could do that I’d
never tried.
Ris for Retirement. What do you see
yourself doing after playing?
I’m a very family person, so hopefully I’ll have a
great career and be able to relax and take care
of my family.
Sis for Sport. What’s your
favourite outside of football?
It’s becoming ping-pong with the table at the
club, but I’d say basketball.
Tis for Travel? What’s your ideal holiday
destination?
My ideal holiday is Bordeaux in the south of
France, but a camping site, so it’s very relaxed
and I’d go there for a month so I can just tune
out; forget everything and chill out in the south
of France.
Uis for Unlimited. If you could have
endless something, what would it be?
I’ll say endless energy.
Vis for Vehicle. What is your dream car?
It’s not really a brand, but I’ve always
wanted a nice automatic 4x4 with leather seats.
A big car.
Wis for Watch. Can you recommend a film
or tv series?
I would say Inception. It’s quite complex, but if you
get it, it’s an unbelievable movie.
Xis for X-Ray. Have you ever broken a
bone?
I broke a bone in my eye. I’ve been in a lot
of tackles and never broken anything but,
somehow, hit my eye off the fridge and broke a
bone in my eye.
Yis for You. Describe yourself in three
words.
Different, kind and calming.
Zis for Zombie. What would you do in the
event of a zombie apocalypse?
Just stock up on cans of beans, get myself a nice
little room, barricade myself in and wait it out.
injustice, others see the unsung
British way of knuckling down
for the cause without fanfare; something
which seems to be of huge value to our
Many have been posthumously recognised
for their contributions, albeit too late in
some people’s eyes.
Alan Turing, the man credited with breaking
the enigma code in WWII and ultimately
turning the tide in the favour of the allies.
Never recognised when he was alive due to
the classified nature of his work, disgraced
due to archaic laws, the Queen officially
recognised him in 2013, some 61 years after
he died.
Peter Taylor, Brian Clough’s not-so famous
the man that looked after the football while
Cloughie did the man management. With
league championships, league cups and
Murdoch from the A-Team, Howling Mad
MICHAEL SOLLBAUER
Most Reds fans fully buy into our business
model. As a fan, we can all feel our
frustrations when we see relatively smaller
clubs pinch players either from us or from
under our noses when the fans think they
can do a job. However, I am fully behind
the owners when it comes to how we
balance our books. I’ll take young and
hungry battling players over the risk of a
points deduction and administration when
we see the same happen to clubs that
have over-spent and underachieved year
upon year.
Sometimes those lads with the raw and
untapped talent that get nurtured in
the right direction by the coaches, the
chaplains, the physios, sports scientists
and nutritionalists, just need a steady head
beside them in the arena of play when all
the behind-the-scenes preparation can
seem so far away.
Sollbauer was that man, at the right
moment when the ship needed steadying
in 2020. When talented players were
seemingly losing their heads, when
we were leaking goals because of
inexperience, when we were getting
‘old-manned’ in almost every game, up
stepped Sole to add that old head on
steady shoulders. In the midst of a global
pandemic, when football shut down and
ultimately restarted without fans, there was
an old guard who had played almost 300
games in the Austrian Bundesliga to steer
us to survival and ultimately our later dally
with the play-offs.
At the end of last season season and after
making around 60 appearances in 18
months, he completed a move to Dynamo
Dresden for an undisclosed fee. But, I feel
his influence and experience at the right
time cannot be underestimated.
Academy Interview
BEN HALL
45
ith four goals in five Professional
Development League fixtures so far,
it’s safe to say that Ben Hall has come
flying out of the blocks this campaign.
What’s more impressive though is that his
contribution is from right wing-back, while he is
also registering a healthy number of assists for
his teammates, too.
Grove Street caught up with the youngster to
get his thoughts on what has been a positive
start to the season.
46
“It might sound bad but, as a wing-back, I am
more attacking than defensive,” began Ben. “So,
I was expecting to be in and amongst the goals,
but I wasn’t expecting to have the start I have
with the four goals.
“I’m enjoying getting forward and it’s a bit of a
shock being so high in the scoring charts, but
I’m just hoping to carry it on through the season
now.”
On the opposite flank is our 20/21 Academy
Player of the Year, Hayden Pickard, who is also
notching his fair share of goals and assists for
Tom Harban’s side.
The 16-year-old even won this season’s August
Goal of the Month award for his magnificent
strike against Bristol City U18s, and Ben admits
it’s testament to the brand of football the young
Reds are currently playing.
“I think between me and Hayden, there’s 12
goal contributions from wing-back and you can
kind of tell where we get our joy throughout the
academy,” he continued. “Hayden is the same
as me – he prefers attacking to defending, but
we have to do both.
“I’m enjoying it and I think Hayden is, too,
because it gives us the licence to bomb on and
get involved.”
Another player excelling at this level is Fabio
GROVE STREET | BARNSLEY FC OFFICIAL PROGRAMME
ISSUE FIVE | BARNSLEY VS NOTTINGHAM FOREST
Jalo, who has made quite the impression while
stepping up from our U16s set-up.
The fledgling forward also has four goals to his
name this term – including one against Wigan
Athletic in the Premier League Cup last weekend
as our U18s secured a 2-0 victory.
“He’s been brilliant,” praised Ben. “Every time
he’s come off the bench this season, he’s scored
or assisted. He came off the bench against
Wigan and scored and assisted, and we won
2-0.
“So, he’s a brilliant asset to come on; he’s a
workhorse, scores goals and he’s everything we
need as a substitute.”
That victory at Wigan was a statement of intent
from our young Reds, who had a couple of fiery
encounters with the Lancashire outfit towards
the end of last season.
The Latics have started the campaign brightly
and came into this clash on the back of a
resounding 7-1 win over Cardiff City, but we
managed to show our mettle and get off to the
perfect start in Group C with fixtures against
Crewe Alexandra and Hull City to come.
“It should boost everyone’s confidence,” insisted
Ben. “There was a lot of animosity last year
when we played them because there was a
tackle on Hayden that should have been a red
card, but they got a yellow and we went onto
lose the game we should have won – both
games, home and away.
“So, going into this one, a lot of the second years
knew what it was going to be like. They had two
red cards but, even 11 v 11, I would have fancied
us because the way we started and came up
against them was really good. I’m hoping we
can take that into the Sheffield United game.”
Rampaging up and down the flanks is no easy
task and stamina levels need to be as high as
possible for wing-backs in the modern game –
ISSUE FIVE | BARNSLEY VS NOTTINGHAM FOREST
particularly with the club’s high tempo philosophy
that runs holistically through the age groups.
Ben put in the hours in pre-season to ensure
he was in peak condition, and he is certainly
reaping the rewards now with a number of
scintillating performances.
“There was a lot of fitness work in pre-season,
especially for me,” discussed the 17-year-old.
“Last season, I wasn’t at my fittest, so I knuckled
down in pre-season, lost a lot of weight and
made sure I came back as fit as I could to hit the
ground running like I have.
“In pre-season, we played three or four games
and I scored two goals and assisted two, so I
knew that if I could stay in the condition I have,
I’d hit the ground running from the start of the
season.
“It was vital coming back fit and we wouldn’t have
been able to have the start we have because
everyone came back in in a really good state.
“We came back in pre-season and did the bleep
tests, and the scores that everyone was getting
were really high. It was good to see, the amount of
effort that everyone was putting in in pre-season.
“The fitness levels have either stayed the same
or improved as we’ve gone through the season,
which is great.”
Like all of our second-year scholars, it is a crucial
period coming up with decisions to be made as
to who will be earning their pro contracts at the
end of the season.
Ben is hoping that he can maintain his excellent
displays so far, which have also resulted in him
appearing amongst the substitutes for Martin
Devaney’s U23s side a few times this term.
“I’d like to think that if I carry on the way
I’ve started the season I’d have a chance –
especially the way I’m going forward,” he said.
“I’d like to say that I’m a leader within the group.
There’s a lot of leaders this year, but there’s a
few of us who have to grab it by the neck.”
ISSUE FIVE | BARNSLEY VS NOTTINGHAM FOREST
GROVE STREET | BARNSLEY FC OFFICIAL PROGRAMME
s has often been the case this season,
we have had two games since I last
wrote my column for you and, again, it
has been mixed fortunes for the Reds in
that time.
There were plenty of encouraging signs in our
draw with Blackburn Rovers to suggest that
results will start to turn positive in the coming
weeks.
50
I thought Blackburn were similar to us, in that
they like to play from the back and through
midfield. Both sides play some impressive
football and they’re a good team – I said this
when I was up in the Legends Lounge.
Overall, I thought it was a good performance
against a good team – and there were some
excellent individual displays, too.
We created the better chances and we should
have won the game, but this is the problem at
the moment and we need to start sticking the
ball in the back of the net.
I think we look solid at the back, but scoring
goals is a real problem at the moment. We’ve
got the quality in the squad, so it only looks like
a matter of time before they start going in on a
regular basis.
It only takes one opportunity to get a goal – like
Blackpool did to us on Saturday. I felt for the
supporters who travelled to Bloomfield Road
because I thought the Reds would get a result,
but it wasn’t to be.
Again, we created opportunities, but failed to
put them away. The old cliché is if you don’t
score goals, you don’t win games, and that’s our
problem.
Everyone is getting frustrated, but it’s so
important that the fans get behind the team
because this is a big game against Nottingham
Forest and we need everyone to be positive.
GROVE STREET | BARNSLEY FC OFFICIAL PROGRAMME
We’ve got a good squad and it’s about getting
the best out of them.
Confidence and morale is important in football,
and all it takes is a win to help transform the
mood around the place.
And it doesn’t matter how we get it – an own goal
will do – as long as we get the result, so there’s a
bit more confidence in the dressing room.
ISSUE FIVE | BARNSLEY VS NOTTINGHAM FOREST
51
So, get behind the lads tonight and hopefully
we can come away with three points and
take that into the next match against
Millwall.
Enjoy the game!
n Doncaster Road, just a few minutes
from Oakwell, is East Dene Working
Men’s Club, which is also home to East
Dene Reds – an official supporter club of
Barnsley FC.
The Club is home to Reds supporters and visiting
fans on matchdays and provides a wonderful,
friendly atmosphere for those wishing to enjoy a
drink before and after the game, and it is not just
limited to members of the supporters group.
A magnificent glass atrium welcomes you as you
enter the Club, with modern facilities available to
use following a big investment.
There is an abundance of space inside the main
function room, complete with a large stage to
accommodate live music acts or discos, while a
big screen also pulls down to show live sport –
primarily the lunchtime kick-off ahead of a trip to
watch Barnsley on Grove Street.
East Dene WMC, in conjunction with East
Dene Reds, liaise with supporter groups from
travelling clubs to ensure that those who visit on
a matchday are unlikely to cause trouble and,
since being founded in 2016, there have been no
incidents.
As well as the function room, there is a games
room on the opposite side of the bar complete
with snooker and pool tables. A fun fact, as
divulged by Club Secretary, Steve Dowle, is that a
second snooker table (which has been dismantled
and now lives under the other table) was used by
our 1912 FA Cup winning side.
Not only does the Club provide a magnificent
venue to socialise on matchdays and during the
week with various events running, but, along
with the supporters group, the two are keen
fundraisers.
John Howard runs East Dene Reds and he told
us how they presented a cheque worth £1,000
to Sunderland supporter, Bradley Lowery, who
tragically died in July 2017 following a brave battle
with cancer.
Hundreds of Mackem fans crammed into the
function room applauded with many in tears at
the incredible gesture.
Fundraising events have also been held for the
children’s unit at Barnsley Hospital and Yorkshire
Air Ambulance, again with £1,000 donated to
those specific charities.
Supporters coaches leave for away games from
East Dene WMC with over 400 members and a
‘core of 100 fans’ who regularly attend. The Club is
family friendly and often holds parties for children
and end of season functions, too.
So, if you fancy a drink before or after the game,
call in to East Dene Working Men’s Club where
you’ll get a warm welcome.
62
Are you not entertained?” screamed
Maximus to the crowds after a
particularly bloody win in the film
Gladiator. Applying that question to
Barnsley right now the answer is ‘Yes’ and ‘No’.
It always puzzles me why clubs who’ve enjoyed
success playing one way, a way that had
far more substance than style under Valérien
Ismaël, want to change that. To pander to the
fan base? Not if the callers on Football Heaven
provide any kind of barometer of the general
opinion. It’s a treacherous challenge in sport
if ever there was one, but it was a challenge
accepted by Markus Schopp.
There’s no doubt the Reds start to the season
has been hindered by injury, Covid-19 issues,
and that damn passport office, but we’ve seen
some great stuff – pressing high, technically
adept possession, and great attacking spirit.
The performance at QPR being evidence of
that. And some panicky, naive football. The
performance at QPR being evidence of that.
But it’s been a common theme of Schopp’s most
recent interviews – even after the defiant draw at
Stoke – that he wants the side to win more ‘duels’
which is code for get stuck in and win more
tackles. Like, well, a gladiator.
On that front, I’m not expecting anyone to enter
the Oakwell, er, battle ground with a sword
against underwhelming Nottingham Forest,
but what was greatly encouraging chatting to
Callum Brittain and Cauley Woodrow after the
matches at Bournemouth and then Stoke (what
a goal that was, Cauley) was the way they were
prepared to take personal responsibility – always
a good trait – for the performances. Not just take
refuge behind the ‘it was Bournemouth’ excuse.
So, with the squad looking a little more flush
and Messrs Andersen, Morris, Oularé not too far
away (no pressure lads) there are still grounds
for optimism, but as ever consistency is a vitally
important part of any successful season. The
question remains can this squad under this Head
Coach achieve it? My personal view is yes, but it
needs to come soon.
