ON THE COVER
to the Autumn
edition of Save
the Date magazine
Congratulations to all you engaged couples. Depending
on what stage you’re at we appreciate that the last
18 months have been, what can be described as,
somewhat stressful (to say the least), so hopefully now is the
time that you can (dare we say) plan & enjoy this special time
in your life.
We are now marking the onset of Autumn/Winter 2021/22
wedding season. This issue sets the tone & will guide you
through your dream journey to planning your wedding. From
stylists’ picks to fashion spreads, we’ve put together this
magazine to help you get the planning rolling.
This issue’s cover model, Cora Flanagan, spent the day with
us and our team of stylists at the stunning Inishowen Gateway
Hotel in Buncrana – it was amazing to see all the plans come
together to bring you our feature photo shoot, ‘Blush Wedding’
(see pages 37-42). Our ‘Real Weddings’ are a firm favourite
of ours – we just LOVE that local couples want to share their
special day with us & we’re so delighted to see them on our
glossy pages!
Within this edition you’ll find advice on picking that
‘all-important dress’ to ideas for those special finishing
touches, all the while keeping it practical by discussing budgets
and timelines. We have a host of local experts like Emma
Murray Stylist, who catalogues her best bridal picks for afterparty
dresses, to practical advice on how getting married will
affect your taxes (yes, it may not be the most glamorous part of
getting married but useful to know!) and a lot more in between.
And FYI – we’re not just a bridal magazine you know!
We’re here all year round with savethedateweddings.ie, our
brand-new, recently launched website featuring an impressive
directory of the top wedding suppliers & service providers in
the Northwest. It’s updated regularly with blogs from local
experts who are willing to share their expertise with our
readers. If you haven’t already, you are going to want to check
it out, trust us!
We loved putting this magazine together for you & hope that
you can sit, relax & enjoy flicking through the pages.

A Special Day Closer to Home
A Special Day Closer to Home
Keith & Julie
By Jonathan
Foley
Keith & Julie
In recent years, the prospect of getting
married abroad has become more and more
appealing to couples during the planning
process.
Lanzarote was the original destination for Julie
and Keith for their big day but doing so during
such unprecedented times of travel restrictions
and so on, this Strabane-based couple opted to
eventually stay closer to home.
A decision that they were delighted to have
made … even if it was at the third attempt.
Following the aftermath of a series of
cancellations and renewed restrictions standing
in the way of their plans, Julie and Keith would
finally get to tie-the-knot on the 28th of July
2021. This is their story.
Throughout much of the small but bustling
town of Strabane, in County Tyrone, the now
newlyweds are perhaps best known for their
running of the Valerie Manning Jewellers
which can be found in the centre of the Main
Street district. A well-known and highly
respected business which has been running
since 1980 and under their careful stewardship
since October of 2014.
We were delighted that both Julie and Keith
took time out from their busy schedule, to
share with us, the fond and cherished memories
they have of their most special day.
Lanzarote
“Originally, we were all set to go to
Lanzarote in June 2020, but with everything
that was going on at the time, we had to put
it back a year and rebook our wedding for the
same month in 2021. The same thing happened
again of course and, as you can imagine, a
lot of the guests we had invited - about 65 or
so - had their travel plans fall through as well”
Julie told.
“Essentially, our plans were based around
having our wedding in Lanzarote, with our
family and friends, so we could have a week of
celebrations and making memories in the sun”
she added.
The original date that everyone had written
in their diaries was 27th June, 2020. When the
couple’s plans for that date fell through, the
first alternative was to reschedule for the exact
same date the following year. The venue was to
be the Amura Restaurant in Puerto Calero.
Unfortunately, neither date would come to
fruition and thus, a new plan was devised.
“It was time to bite-the-bullet, so to speak,
so we started making plans to do things a bit
closer to home,” she added with a degree of
optimism.
After some trials and tribulations in the
06 | SAVE THE DATE magazine
search for a suitable venue here in Ireland,
a member of their staff suggested to them a
beautiful and most scenic spot which was just a
hop-and-a-skip up the road.
The Drenagh Estate; a Georgian Mansion
House which is nestled in a most picturesque
parkland on the outskirts of Limavady was
available to host this truly special occasion.
“It was absolutely lovely,” Julie recalled. “It
was not what either of us had expected and it
certainly exceeded any expectations we might
have had. On the day, we ended up only having
our closest family members and friends and
we were just so appreciative that we could find
such a spectacular venue so close to home.”
With its intimate setting and tranquil
surroundings, Julie went on to explain that she
was “as calm as you like” on the morning of the
day. She happily recalled how she, along with
her bridesmaid, Tracey (sister in-law) made
their way to Drenagh about an hour and a half
before proceedings got underway, where they
could put any finishing touches to their hair and
make-up, without hassle.
For the groom, Keith also recalled his final
few hours of bachelorhood.
“My brother was my best man and we got
to the venue at about midday or so. It was such
a lovely, scenic place, but we still had a few
last-minute jobs to do” Keith said. “We had to
make sure we got the wedding cake there, safe
and sound, so in a way, we were kind of acting
as delivery men on the day too” he jokingly
recalled.
“Once that was done, we were shown to a
small room where we could get ourselves ready
and even have a wee beer together to mark the
occasion. Again, the venue was superb. I’d
previously taken a video on my phone and sent it
to my other brother in America and his response
was, as blunt as you like, ‘well, why’d you not
just pick there in the first place?’” he laughed.
Hitches & Glitches
There was one small hitch to the plans, however.
When an initial smattering of rainfall quickly
became torrential, a last-minute decision was
made to swap the idea for an outdoor ceremony
to an indoor one. After all the previously scuttered
plans these two had to make their wedding
happen, this was only a mere and minor glitch to
proceedings.
Later that afternoon, the new Mr and Mrs
Gordon made their vows, kissed and joined
together in joyous matrimony. The celebrations
could begin, but they
made sure to take time out
from all the excitement to
touch base, via video link,
to send their own love
to their relatives, friends
and staff colleagues, who
tuned in online, so that
they too could take in the
atmosphere of the day.
David Doherty, a
local musician who had
become well-known
during lockdown for his
streamed performances,
supplied the music
throughout most of
the evening and when
reflecting on the day as
a whole, Keith, as you
might expect, had only
had good things to talk
about.
“We’re so glad we decided on this venue.
Looking back at our plans in Lanzarote it
was always a bit surreal to me, like a sixth
sense it was never going to happen out there.
Especially when you consider the thought
of wearing a three-piece suit in roasting hot
weather,” he joked
“Having said that, the lady in Lanzarote
who was originally planning our wedding
is someone who we cannot speak highly
enough of. She was very understanding
when we had to make the cancellations
and she went to great lengths to return our
deposits. I’ve heard since that other couples
haven’t been so lucky in that regard, so we
are so very thankful to her” he added.
The pandemic era will be remembered
for a lot of things; social distancing, masks
becoming mandatory and, of course, such
unforeseen restrictions on travel and social
events. There was also a tremendous burden
placed on the shoulders of small business
owners and one of the dominant themes we
all heard about, when it came to retail, was
that we should all endeavour to ‘shop local.’
And that’s just what the Gordons did.
As Julie told, “once we had made the
decision to have the wedding in Drenagh,
we didn’t have much to plan, so we kept it
local for everything we needed. Be it hair,
make-up, dresses, florists, the photographer,
we kept everything local. This took a lot
of pressure off us. After all, we’d always
encouraged the ‘shop local’ idea ourselves,
so I guess you could say, we had to practice
what we preached, and it all turned out just
wonderful” she concluded.
Among the local enterprises which Julie
alluded to, both she and Keith would like
to express their most sincere thanks to
the following businesses: Davy Ralston
Photography, Donna’s Flower Shop, Bake
Away By Meg, all of whom can be found in
Strabane.
They also wished to thank Tomorrows
Bridal & Suits, both based in Derry, and of
course, who could forget Valerie Manning
Jewellery - the little jewellers on the Strabane
Main Street which the new Mister and
Missus Gordons know so very well indeed.

Wedding trends for 2022
After the wedding apocalypse of 2020,
many couples had great dreams for 2021,
only to be disappointed with restrictions
and uncertainty. This leaves
us with great expectations
for 2022 as with two years
of quiet subdued affairs
behind us we can look
forward to a break from
tradition with a ‘go wild
and be yourself’ attitude!
1
Nature trends
If we take the positive lessons from the
last two years the outdoor setting is here
to stay. Its natural light is great for photos
and encompasses peoples newfound
love and respect for nature and the back
garden!
This greater awareness of the outdoors
leads towards a more sustainable wedding
with natural earthy tones and textures
such as tables set with linen napkins and
terracotta pots, alongside nature inspired
colours and themes.
Colour trends
That is not to say everything is looking
calm and neutral as Bridgerton-inspired
empire lines and floral themes are definitely
an influence on choices for 2022. Puff
1. Linen napkins with earthy tones
tie in well with an outdoor setting.
2. Bridgerton-inspired dress
features an elaborate high neck &
v-shaped neckline.
3. Fresh apple, cinnamon, ice and
herb mocktails.
4. Handmade invitations made of
recycled paper.
5. Sustainable weddings are
a trend that is here to stay -
thankfully!
sleeve dresses and vintage china are very much in demand.
The break from traditions is encouraging people to add pops of their own
favourite colour in amongst a white colour scheme. There are predictions for
vibrant pink-purples, earthy olive greens, creamy yellows, tropical oranges, and
ocean blues for the upcoming wedding season. This reflects the trend of really
expressing yourself in your ceremony.
Whether you favour calm and simple or floral and fancy there is an exciting year
ahead with choices for all budgets and tastes.
3
Dresses
The year for choice is ahead with flamboyant and detachable sleeves a contemporary
addition to the wedding dress trends. Mixed seperates are a welcome
result of having to adjust to the many changes
of the past two years of wedding planning.
They appeal to the more sustainable bride 2
for wearability and also a contemporary and
adaptable look. Renting wedding dresses has
increased due to environmental awareness and
also because it gives brides access to dresses
way above their budget.
4
5
Alcohol-free Mocktails
While traditionally weddings are a great excuse
for a grand old session, the trend towards a
healthier lifestyle has created some fabulous
alcohol free beverages which we can expect
to see popping up in weddings. Whether it’s
a simple selection of alcohol-free wine and
beer or a delicious signature mocktail this is a
definite for the 2022 wedding season.

Proposal Ideas
Are you trying to decide how to pop the question?
We have 10 delightful proposal ideas to help you get that resounding yes!
So, you’ve got the ring and
an inkling your partner will
say yes! Now how do you go
about it?
We have ten of the best proposal ideas
to help make sure your proposal is both
personal and perfect. These will make that
special moment a day to remember.
1. Holiday Surprise
One of the most popular proposals is on
holiday, don’t let staycations put you off,
find a beautiful moment or your partners
favourite place and get planning.
Think about what they’ll like best – is it a
romantic walk on the beach? A hike up a
mountain?
At that gorgeous restaurant you both love?
You could even rent bikes and hide the
ring in their helmet. If travel abroad is an
option Paris works well.
Whether at home or abroad it will be a
holiday to remember and whatever you do
– don’t forget the ring!
2. Romance at home
There’s no place like home, after all. To
make this special put effort into little details
- you can make a trail of candles or flower
petals that leads to your chosen spot.
Use flowers and balloons to transform the
space. For a really cute surprise, why not
spell out the question in fridge magnets or
with glow-in-the-dark stars on the ceiling?
3. Treasure Hunt
Use all the little moments you have shared
to make clues for your partner. These
could be little rhymes (“to find the first clue,
check in your shoe”) or simple statements
(“go to the room I first told you I loved
you”). You can make this big or small by
staying at home or involving your friends
and family, think about how private your
partner is when deciding. When they get to
the end, they find you waiting with the ring!
4. Airport Opportunity
Take the opportunity when picking up your
love from a flight. Bring a big sign with “will
you marry me “on it or their name on it and
a Mr./Mrs. in front of their first name with a
question mark. Bend the knee and hear the
crowd cheer!
5. Concert Love
Do you share a love of music? Get to a
concert and when your partners favourite
song comes on turn around and show
them the ring! If you want a grand gesture,
you can contact their management and the
venue and request to get up on stage and
propose in front of the crowds.
6. Put it in print
Invest in a full-page ad in a newspaper,
then find a beautiful spot to have a romantic
morning of catching up on current
events. You need to get the timing right so
be ready and watch her face!
7. Radio goo-goo
If your loved one loves to listen in and you
are very brave - call into your partners
favourite show while they are listening and
propose on the air.
8. Foodie favourite
Talk to your favourite restaurant and set
up a special menu! Get the waiter to bring
sheet of paper you’ve planted with your
marriage proposal. Be ready on one knee
with the ring!
9. Campfire talk
Camping has become hugely popular this
year and a lot more comfortable! What
better than a night under the stars roasting
marshmallows for a romantic opportunity.
10. First meeting place
This can be a really fabulous proposal!
Take a trip down memory lane and revisit
the bar you first met in or the restaurant
where you first had dinner. It is the perfect
way to reminisce over your happy relationship.
As you recall all the wonderful
memories, you can get down on one knee
and ask if they would like to make memories
forever!

Getting married in

The Hungarian Dental Clinic offers many different

It is advised to start your treatments
two years prior to the wedding if you

if you want implants. Implants start
from €1400.
You can also wear braces if your are in
the middle of your ortho treatments,

BRIDAL
LINGERIE
Best Buys
Your wedding day is one of the most important and
special days of your life, and you want to feel
comfortable, beautiful and sexy on the day.
With this in mind, choosing the right bridal underwear is
very important and should never be an afterthought.
When you have worked out what you
need for your dress shape make sure
to get fitted properly when buying
the underwear. Also remember to
consider the colour of your dress as
bright white can stand out underneath
and nude colours are often more
versatile.
Definitely take your chosen lingerie
to your next dress fitting to make sure
everything is in place. Bear in mind
support bras and shapewear aren’t
always pretty so a second fancy set of
lingerie for the wedding night can be
a good idea!
It can all seem like a tricky task, but
we are here to help.
Below we have covered two dress
styles popular for 2022 and paired
them with the right underwear.
The Plunging Neckline
Wedding gowns with plunging neckline are a
sophisticated choice. A deep V lengthens your neck,
flatters your décolletage and adds a little oomph to any
dress whether it’s a strapless corset bodice or a longsleeve
lace number. In this style dress what you have
on underneath really matters! The size of your bust
will also determine which option suits both you and
your dress. Look for a bra that has a special cutout in
the front to accommodate a low neckline. This type of
wedding lingerie will usually have extra support on the
side to ensure everything stays in place despite the dip
in the middle. Another option would be to see if your
bridal salon or seamstress can sew the bra into your
dress to give you built-in support.

The Square Neckline
We can probably thank “Bridgerton” for this neckline
and we couldn’t be more grateful. The square wedding
dress neckline is going to be everywhere for wedding
dresses in 2022. It’s really versatile as it’s flattering
for both large and small busts, giving you support or
coverage when you need it while also creating and
enhancing your cleavage by revealing more of your
décolletage. This dress requires less complicated
lingerie however, some careful thought is required
when it comes to what bra to wear. Too full of a cup
style and it may be visible through or above your
dress, so a balconette bra is probably a better option.
A square neckline will draw the eye to the top part of
your dress, so make sure your bra is perfectly fitted.

Donegal’s Hidden Gem
Jackson’s Hotel
When you think of a stunning
riverside wedding venue
overlooking leafy woodland,
you would be forgiven if Ballybofey,
Co. Donegal wasn’t perhaps your first
thought.
But nestled in the heart of the Twin
Towns is a real hidden gem that not
only boasts panoramic river views
from its ballroom but also has the
picturesque backdrop of Drumboe
Woods.
Jackson’s Hotel is perhaps best
known for its leisure centre, family
breaks and where you had your
school formal but since coming into
the ownership of the Gallen Family
in 2017, this hotel has taken on a
transformation of its own.
Majestic
The Wedding Suite is simply majestic,
from the moment you enter the
spacious lobby with a sweeping
staircase and ornate chandelier you
are transported to a world of grandeur
and elegance.
Follow through to the Finn Suite to
be greeted with a wonderfully bright
Ballroom that draws you in with its
high ceilings, unique dome lighting and an
outdoor terrace with breath taking views.
Purpose built for dream weddings, the Finn
Suite is a chameleon – easily shape shifting
into a room that comfortably caters up to 500
guests and then transforming to an intimate
space for a more intimate wedding of 250
guests or less – all due to clever design and
bi-fold partitions adorned with a twinkling fairy
light backdrop.

each couple want from their venue and to
help make that a reality.”
The team
At Jackson’s Hotel the success and
enjoyment of a wedding day or indeed
the planning process is not down to one
person yes, your wedding manager may
be your point of contact and the face of the
venue but it’s the team in behind that work
to make every aspect of the process and
the day itself run like clockwork. Every team
member is a vital cog, from the cleaning
staff, maintenance, chefs, waiting staff and
everyone in between. We all work diligently
to ensure every little detail is taken care of.

Hotel Wedding
Hotel Wedding or
Welcome back hotel weddings!
They are not quite the same
as before, however it is good
to be able to celebrate together. Hotels
have always been the most popular
choice for weddings due to their
convenience and versatility. With
the wedding dynamic changing over
recent years we look at the pros and
cons to help you plan your big day!
THE PROS
Experienced staff
There is usually a wedding team with a lot of
experience. There will also be someone with
you on the day to help the event go smoothly.
Pleasant décor
Most hotels will have a selection of
decorations that you can use on the day, such
as chair covers, ribbons and centrepieces.
Convenience and accommodation
Rooms for you both to get ready on the day
and rooms for guests usually at a good rate and
no need to worry about transport.
Licence
A licensed room for your wedding ceremony-
For those not going to the church, an adaptable
option for everyone.
A formal dining room
Lots of space for your wedding meal
A bar or lounge
Great section for pre-dinner drinks.
Bridal suite
Accommodation for your wedding night.
Wedding packages
Fabulous deals to be had with less work for
you.
In-house catering
Usually a choice of menus for different
budgets and tastes.
Covid plan
All venues must comply with all legal covid
regulations.
THE CONS
Limited decorating
Not always a huge variety so you might still
need to outsource for that personal touch.
Lacking individuality
Complies to the traditional wedding set-up
The pros
so no real room to do something completely
different.
Number restrictions
Indoor weddings are currently restricted to
100 people (Until 22 October) and there is still
a little uncertainty surrounding this in to the
future.
Music restrictions
Thankfully live music is starting to return
indoors, but it is still something we need to
keep an eye on.
Limitations on outside vendors
Hotel policies vary on bringing in outside
vendors.
Not exclusive
There is a lack of privacy as there are usually a
variety of functions and guests visiting
the hotel.

Garden Wedding
Garden Wedding?
& cons
A
beautiful and lush environment
is a fantastic location for a
wedding. If you love nature
and the outdoors what better than a
garden wedding. However, as with any
wedding venue, there will be pros and
cons you will need to make a choice if
the negatives outweigh the positives
when it comes to planning a garden
wedding.
THE PROS
Beautiful location
There is nothing like the outdoors for beauty,
get those flowers planted!
Natural lighting
Perfect lighting for fabulous photos.
Budget friendly
With no venue cost, your budget can stretch
further.
Freedom with décor
The sky (and your imagination) is the limit for
how you want to decorate.
Keep it local
Great deals in Donegal & Northwest for locally
produced food and catering.
Covid friendly
Outdoors is great at the moment, larger guest
list and live music allowed!
THE CONS
Weather
Plan for cover in case of rain or wind!
More planning involved
All the organising is down to you - catering,
decorating, etc, etc, etc.
Space
With 200 allowed at an outdoors event you
may still have to keep it small if your garden is
modest. (Until 22 October)
The clean-up!
Hiring professionals would by my personal
opinion on this one.
Covid
You have to do the work on a covid plan and
make sure any outside source has one to keep
all your guests safe!
Garden maintenance
Months of planning and work to get your garden
how you want it for the big day.
Hidden cost
Think PA systems, ice- machines, lighting for
the evening, items you would never think of
that are provided in hotel venues.

Leslie Magee On Skincare
Wedding Day
Skincare Tips
You’ve made it through the exciting part
of your engagement (Prosecco and ring
selfies), now it’s time to prepare for
your big day.
For my first column, I’m going to be talking
you through your wedding beauty regime.
I promise you that if you follow my tips and
tricks - you will have the best skin as you walk
down the aisle.
Starting a wedding beauty regimen is a form
of self-care, this is the perfect excuse for some
pampering before the nuptials.
Below are the main points to consider when
your creating your beauty routine.
Manage stress levels
By Leslie Magee
This is a dealbreaker. Many inflammatory
skin disorders such as psoriasis and eczema
are thought to be related to stress. Excess
stress can also disrupt your sleep pattern,
leading you to have a skin tone similar to
Wednesday Addams. Do whatever you can to
chill out. Binge watch Sex and The City. Book
a yoga class. Head for a stroll on the beach
(my personal favourite). Just make sure to
relax!
Book an appointment with a skin
professional
By talking to a professional you will be
able to find out your skin type and your skin
concerns. This will give you a core plan that
you can follow.
Decide if Retinol is right for you
The hottest ingredient on the skincare block
is retinol, a derivative from Vitamin A. Retinol
increases cell turnover, unclogs pores, targets
acne and targets pigmentation. As great as this
ingredient is, it can cause purging including
peeling, sensitivity and redness before the
amazing effects kick in. If you are playing
with the idea of incorporating a retinol into
your routine, start at 12 months from your big
day.
Exfoliate regularly
Dead skin cells that accumulate on the
surface can give a dull appearance. Regular
exfoliation with a good quality exfoliator
that is designed for your skin type will have
you glowing on your wedding day. Initially, I
recommend exfoliating once per week, then
advancing to twice per week after a month if
you can tolerate it.
There is a huge range of products out there
with the hottest ingredient, Retinol.
This is not another hectic to-do list. I
promise this checklist is more exciting than
organising the seating plan for your feuding
family members. Stick to the rules and you
will have glass-like skin on your special
day.
If you wish to book a personalised consultation
with myself, do not hesitate to
contact me. Instagram - leslieemagee.

Floral
Trends
2022
There is nothing like
flowers to make a day special
You must consider the theme and design
of your big day as well as your own
favourite flowers and the time of year.
This year unique and personalised combinations are
abundant. Your wedding florist will help guide you in
making final decisions. We are here in the meantime
with some tips for what’s coming up in 2022.
Bridal Bouquets
Picture dried and fresh flowers combined and
mixtures of roses, pampas grass and bunny tails -
divine! The combination of fresh and dried gives a
great balance of colour and texture!
Colours
A neutral palette with timeless, classic whites/
creams and luscious green foliage is bang on trend.
Keeping with neutral earthy tones such as dusky
pink and sage green will also feature in 2022. However,
with people’s individuality popping out expect
anything in this exciting year for colour!
Hanging Installations
These will use natural materials like hanging florals
and vines, which are used to increase the feeling of
spaciousness in your venue. Think wisteria!
Entry &
Ceremony Arches
Big impact geometric arches with a crisp
modern style are for any palette.
Table Flowers
Long foliage garlands for rustic
style long tables and eye
popping centre-pieces for round
ones.

Engagement Ring Guide
for any budget
Diamonds are the traditional
way to go and also the most
expensive! There are four ways
to judge a diamond engagement ring -
cut, carat weight, colour and clarity.
The cut determines the sparkle and brilliance
so choosing well here pays off! If the sky is the
limit the higher the carat the higher the price.
Colour and clarity are where it gets technical,
high-end stones are magnified to determine
quality. A good balance between the four C’s
is ideal, carefully selecting cut and colour can
keep you on budget while still getting the look
you desire.
There is a myriad of shapes and settings to
dazzle available, below are the classic styles of
setting all of which have stood the test of time
because of their beauty and popularity.
Solitaire
A single stone remains the most popular choice
for engagement rings. The head secures the
diamond. Timeless elegance!!
Sidestone
Diamonds or gemstones, run alongside the main
stone for extra sparkle or colour.
Three Stone
Traditional and very romantic, one diamond
for the past, one for the present, and one for the
future. Usually, the centre diamond is larger
than the two side stones. Megan Markle!!
46 | SAVE THE DATE magazine
Four Ways!
Cut, carat weight,
colour & clarity
Pavee
The main stone is surrounded by tiny diamonds
for spectacular sparkle and the illusion of
greater size.
Gem Stones
If you want a diamond but not the price tag, try
a white sapphire, these have the same appearance
and are also durable for daily wear. For a
bright and beautiful look, gemstones are a popular
alternative and can suit a more sensitive
budget, blue sapphires, rubies, and emeralds all
make fabulous engagement rings. Think chic
and unique!! Antique rings are a truly romantic
buy and can keep in line with any budget high
or low.
Metal
Platinum is one of the strongest and most
durable of ring choices, so it’s perfect for
engagement rings. This strength will protect
your diamond or gemstone and see the ring
withstand years of daily use. Although it will
require you to flash the cash being at the higher
end of the price scale.
Rose Gold
This magical pink-tinted metal is gold with an
added copper alloy. The more copper alloy in
the metal, the deeper the rosy tones.
Rose gold represents love, a true representation
of your engagement. Oozing style and
beauty as well as being durable it’s another
budget friendly choice!
Once you make your purchase remember to
get your bling insured. By mixing and matching
stones metals and settings, everyone can find
their perfect ring.
There really is something for everyone so keep
looking until you are satisfied!
Yellow Gold
A traditional favourite, this naturally yellow
metal gets combined with different metal alloys
for added strength. Classic and elegant it’s
always a popular choice. Unlike diamonds, the
higher carat isn’t the best choice as the metal
becomes softer and easier to damage, a fact
which also helps with the price!
White Gold
When yellow gold is painted with rhodium
white gold is created, a stunning appearance
similar to platinum. An elegant and versatile
choice that can suit any budget.
There is a myriad of shapes
and settings to dazzle available,
classic styles of setting, all of
which have stood the test of
time because of their beauty
and popularity.

Planning your first
Congratulations you are taking the
plunge! You have your ring sorted and
the question popped, what do you do
next? Your wedding meal is the delicious feast
after the ceremony, the couple’s first meal as a
married couple. We are here to help with a
step-by-step guide to help plan the perfect
wedding reception your guests will remember.
Step 1: Save the date!
Do this, before you start looking for locations for the
dinner menu.
Some venues may be booked up to a year (or more)
in advance, so be prepared to be flexible with dates and
places. The time of year and the day of the week will
reflect in availability and price. These days people have
had to adapt to all the restrictions and weddings can
happen any day of the week or time of year!
Step 2: Splash the cash!
With a date sorted you must decide your overall budget.
This and your number of guests will determine what
venues are perfect for your celebration. Hopefully covid
will not be deciding guest numbers in 2022.
Step 3: What and where?
Would you like it indoors or outdoors? Remember to
have a plan for rain if going with outdoor, we do live in
Ireland after all! Vaccinations are required for indoor
dining right now which is also worth thinking about.
What type of food do you want to have? There are
many choices for this, while a sit-down dinner is the
traditional type of reception, other choices to consider
are a family dinner, buffet, a pig on a spit or food trucks.
Are you having a toast? Toasts can be a lovely moment
for the couple and guests, but it’s best to keep them
short and sweet. Usually, they should be made during or
in between dinner courses, and kept to two or three.
Step 4: Suigh síos (Sit down)!
If you decide you want a sit-down dinner (one of the
safest choices during covid), you will have the task
of assigning seats. This should be simple however it
usually gets complicated, have fun!
The top table usually sits the married couple, with
the bridal party and parents. However, don’t be afraid
to break from tradition and do what suits your own
situation the best, it is your day after all.
Have fun naming tables after places you have visited
or you favourite authors or local landmarks e.g., Mount
Errigal, Malin Head…
Do remember to think about the elderly and their
seats not only for covid safety but also for comfort.
Name place cards are the formal way to arrange
seating, it is a great option if you are concerned about
placing people next to each other who might not
get along! Also, escort cards with just the name
and table number are another way to arrange
seating and they can choose their own seat at
that table. Enjoy picking the stationary flowers
and table decorations to fit in with your theme.
Step 5: Food glorious food!
Food is one of the most important elements of
the reception, and something that everyone will
remember for years to come.
What do you want? What time of year is it?
Most venues will offer packages and choices
for a variety of styles.
Choosing a menu is great fun and you can
52 | SAVE THE DATE magazine
meal as a maried couple
offer your guests something truly special.
Decide if there is a drinks reception on
arrival at the venue, this can keep guests busy
while you are off getting photos taken. There
are dozens of options with canapes, cheese
boards, and chocolate fountains being popular
choices.
For a sit-down dinner, the guests have menus
at the table. They will be served their meal
seated at the table.
These days a buffet will still require servers
as well as a plan for guests to get their meal
safely. There are also other alternatives, such
as family-style or food stations, so discuss
all these options with your partner and your
caterer.
Where will you put the wedding cake and
when will you cut it? Usually, there will be
a separate small cake table and you need to
decide when the cake will be cut.
You can use the cake as part of the dessert,
serve it later in the evening or let guests take a
piece home with them at the end of the night.
Decide if you will cut the cake when you
are ready to serve dessert, right after dinner or
earlier in the evening.
Make certain that the photographer knows
your plan so that they are ready to capture the
moment when you cut the cake.
Will there be music and dancing? - we
certainly hope so, don’t forget to book!
Step 6: Make a
health and safety plan
Not the most fun part of the planning but
necessary these days! This will involve talking
to your venue and or caterer about what they
are doing to comply with current guidelines as
well as deciding on any additional items you
want added such as hand sanitising stations
or masks for guests. Just remember these
steps are what make your wedding possible
and safe! Don’t forget this is a day for you to
express and commit your love for one another,
enjoy the planning and the details but try not
to worry if they have to change.

SAVE THE DATE Expert View Paul Foley on Tax Affairs
Getting Married in Ireland
Tax implications
After birth and death, marriage is the
next most important “life event” that
has an effect on your tax affairs.
If you get married, it is important you tell
Revenue, as soon as you can, by providing
them with your own and your spouse’s PPS
numbers and your date of marriage.
Since 2011, all married couples and
registered civil partners are treated the same
way for tax purposes.
When you get married or enter a civil
partnership it can change your reliefs, credits
and thresholds. How you choose to be
assessed will also have an effect.
Revenue recognises certain registered
foreign marriages and civil partnerships for
tax purposes. A list of all foreign marriages
and civil partnerships recognised in Ireland
is given by the Department of Justice and
Equality.
Foreign registered marriages or civil
partnerships which are recognised by
Revenue will be taxed in the same way as an
Irish couple.
Once you are married, you will continue
to be taxed as two single people in the first
year.
You may qualify for a refund if you pay
more tax for the year, as two single people,
than you would if you had been taxed jointly.
If you are due a refund, it will only
be given from the date of marriage or
registration of civil partnership.
You can claim the refund of the difference
after 31st December of the year in which you
get married.
Refunds are repaid to each person in
proportion of the amount of tax paid by each
person.
Following the year of marriage
there are three options for calculating
tax for you and your spouse or civil
partner:
• Joint assessment
• Separate assessment
• Separate (single) treatment
Joint assessment is the option that
benefits most couples, whereby
you are chargeable to tax on your
combined total income.
This is the option that Revenue
apply when they are notified that you
are married or in a civil partnership.
If you are a resident in Ireland and
your spouse or civil partner is not,
then you will be taxed as a single
person.
If you are both non-resident, but one of you has an Irish income and pays Irish tax (for
example a cross-border worker) then your income will be taxed in the same way as if only one
partner is resident.
If your non-resident spouse or civil partner has either no income or non-Irish income, you may
be able to claim a portion of relief after the year end known as aggregation relief.
The portion of relief you receive is based on the proportion your Irish income is of your total
worldwide income as a couple.
Note that the tax affairs of cross border workers are complicated and therefore any advice
obtained should be specific to your personal circumstances.
When you get married or enter a civil partnership it can change your reliefs, credits and
thresholds. How you choose to be assessed will also have an effect.
The following is a list (not definitive) of tax credits and reliefs to be taken into consideration
following marriage:
• Home Carer Tax Credit
• Single Persons Child Carer Credit
• Health Expenses
• Age Tax Credit
• Exemption and marginal relief
If you require any further assistance with the above matters or feel that you
would benefit from our advice, then please do not hesitate to contact our office.

Wedding Prep 101:
Let’s talk nails...
Picking a wedding dress is a fun
experience, trying on many styles and
colours then finally choosing that one
that suits your personality and makes you
feel a million dollars… Deciding on the right
manicure ‘for you’ is not much different, not all
brides like the same dress, why should they like
the same nails?
Nails show off your personality, if you are a
bubbly extrovert, why not get the bold red nails
with the red lip? Or maybe you are quiet and
more of a romantic, French ombre or pink nudes
may be the style for you. Don’t let the cliche of
‘this is what brides are having done’ hold you
back from BEING YOU, on YOUR wedding
day.
Trials
Your nail technician will help with all the other
decisions like ‘gel polish, acrylic, extensions,
overlay. These decisions can be quite daunting,
and this is the very reason why nail trials are
important. Getting to know your likes and
dislikes allows the nail professional to create a
set of nails that showcases who you are.
The appointment
The week before the wedding normally entails
running around tying up the loose ends before
the I Do’s.
If the salon can accommodate the whole bridal
party, why not make it a pamper morning and do
a little bonding with the ladies walking down the
aisle with you.
Make sure to schedule your nail appointment for
2-3 days before the wedding to ensure your nails
look their best on the photos, framing the new
ring on your finger.
Tips for the bride
• Research nail/beauty salons if you do not
already attend one.
• Book appointments ASAP (for yourself and the
bridal party).
• Don’t forget your hubby’s hands (it’s not only
your hands that will appear in the photos).
• Look up ideas to see what you might like.
• Get a good hand cream/cuticle oil and use it
daily.
• Make the most of the experience and enjoy
every last second.
Flutter those lash extensions
Lashes accentuate your natural beauty and that
creates radiating confidence.
Choosing the correct style of lashes can be
difficult when you have a specific ‘make-up’
look in mind.
Make-up and lashes go hand in hand. Booking
your lash and make-up trials around the same
time will allow you to see the finished look,
rather than the one clashing with the other when
putting them together on the big day.
Your lash tech may book a face-to-face
consultation and a patch test to help you decide
which style to choose.
A patch test is very important, even if you have
had lashes done in the past. Test again!
Red swollen eyes are not a pretty look in
wedding photos.
Lash tips
• Start your lash trials at least two months before
the wedding to ensure you get the style you like
best.
• Clean your lashes regularly (a build-up of
make-up and oils can cause the lash extensions
to detach from your natural lashes, or worst case,
it could cause eye infections).
• Brush your lashes daily to keep them looking
neat.
• Book at least one lash trial and make-up trial
around the same time to see the finished look.
Carefree while hair free
Waxing is a great way to get hair-free before
your wedding.
Removing the hair from the root and not just
skin level will give you a long-lasting result.
Going to a salon that uses a good professional
wax like ‘Waxperts’ will provide you with a pain
free waxing experience.
Waxing is an effective hair removal method,
which leaves hair growing back finer and at a
lower volume.
It is suitable on any part of the body leaving your
skin feeling smooth and silky.
Your beauty therapist will advise you on
whether to use hot wax or strip wax for different
treatment areas.
It is best to start your waxing journey a few
months before the big day,
This will give time to build up trust between you
and the person doing your hair removal.
Tips and tricks
• For certain areas on the body the hair has to
be the length of a grain of rice to ensure the best
results.
When waxing:
• Exfoliate regularly the week and up to a day
before your appointment to buff off dead skin
cells and avoid ingrown hairs, always choose a
mild exfoliant as a harsh exfoliation may leave
the skin to sensitive.
• A hot shower prior to your appointment will
open the pores and help with waxing.
• Avoid caffeine before your treatment, it
stimulates your nervous system and creates
more sensitivity.
• No sunbed or direct sun exposure for at least 24
hours after a wax treatment.

While your wedding dress is the
most important dress you will
wear, your after-party dress is
up there with being very important too!
You can have a lot of fun with it and that’s
because a lot of after-party dresses will
be sparkly fabrics, shorter hemlines and
beautifully cut dresses.
It is also a great opportunity to show
your personal style and the best thing
is that you will be able to rewear your
special dress time and time again in the
summer months.
A shimmering mini dress with a little
bit of sequins and beading is a classic
choice for late night celebrations. Not
only are they eye-catching but something
a little different if you opted for a more
conservative wedding dress - it gives
you the chance to have a little fun with
your look! If you prefer something a little
understated, an ultra-chic dress in bridal
white with no fuss or pattern will be
timeless and elegant. Or, if you want to
go all out for a bolder after party moment,
why not opt for a jumpsuit!
I have put together a few of my top picks
and I hope you find a dress you absolutely
love and feel amazing in. Enjoy ALL
of the planning and with normality now
resuming, I know your celebrations will be
everything you hoped for.
Emma x
1
Dress 1
No dress is more party-ready
than a sparkly mini dress. All
eyes will be on you as you hit
the dancefloor in this silvery
number.
Dress 2
Not all party dresses have to
be covered in sequins and
embellishments. If you’re
having a destination wedding,
this light-weight dress featuring
a side cut-out feels especially
fitting for your warm-weather
nuptials.
Dress 3
You can never go wrong with a
little white dress, especially one
that is covered in sequins with a
romantic open back. This style
could easily be worn to any
post-wedding party.
Dress 4
When it comes to your afterparty
look, you’ll want to make
sure you choose an option that’s
not only stylish but functional
too. Playsuits are fashionable,
fun, and perfect for letting loose
on the dance floor.
Dress 5
If you want to stick to bridal
white for your after-party look,
opt for a sequined-embellished
little white dress. This flirty mini
from Galvan is fun and comfy
thanks to its soft silk-satin lining.
Dress 6
There is perhaps no better dress
to dance in than one that’s made
entirely from cascading fringe.
That’s because a swishy fringe
frock not only screams afterparty,
but it also moves when
you move.

Your Bridal Guide
Every bride wants to look beautiful on
her big day, which means her hair and
makeup must be on point. And to ensure
this a bride must do two things: choose the
right artist and the right look. Read on for some
helpful wedding hair & makeup tips!
Finding inspiration for your wedding day style
is as easy as ever. First of all the venue will
sometimes determine what dress you will wear,
for example you wouldn’t wear the same style
of dress to a destination beach wedding as what
you would wear to an Irish country castle! The
style of dress therefore will also determine
your style of hair and make-up…. Read on to
hear more tips on how you should prep your
hair before styling & whether you should wear
false eyelashes.
Finding your perfect
makeup artist & hair stylist
Firstly check their experience. Secondly
book a trial. Most make-up artists will have an
online portfolio of their work to view. Lots of
experience is great for obvious reasons - level
of work, professionalism and with experience
your artist’s timing will be impeccable the
morning of your special day (we have the
routine down to a fine art now and are usually
finished when photographers arrive), you don’t
want your hubby to be waiting at the altar.
Your chosen artist will be a relaxed calming
influence on the day, ensuring you can sit back
and just relax.
How should brides prepare hair
prior to wedding day styling?
For the big day, book a trial to find your perfect
team. I always recommend that brides arrive
to the salon the day prior so her stylist can prepare
her hair for the following day, particularly
if the bride is leaving her hair down this allows
the stylist to pin curl her hair to ensure the curls
last the following day.
The most asked question......... “I want to leave
my hair down but the curls won’t last. What do
I do?” There is only one thing to do get extensions.
We offer Beautyworks extensions here
in the salon. Book a consultation for a method
that suits you and also your budget!
Makeup & skin
There are two questions I get asked more
than any others. First, brides enquire whether
to opt for full glam or traditional makeup.
When considering a glamourous or traditional
makeup application, the most important
thing is to have an idea of what you envision
yourself looking like for the big day. Do
you envision yourself looking glamorous or
natural - or do you prefer something natural,
like someone might look at you and not realise
right away that you had makeup on, the ‘I
woke up like this look’?? Knowing the answer
to these questions will help us determine the
right application for you. If you choose the
latter…. Natural: Get your skincare on point
YESTERDAY I highly recommend getting
microneedling - I have recently started getting
mine in Raw Wellness and I honestly can say
I’m glowing! I am also going to let you in on
a massive secret too – check out the profhilo
treatment available at Fitzgerald’s Private
Clinic here in Letterkenny…. I’ll let you do the
research on that!
Tan
Speaking of skin, if you are not embracing the
pale and interesting look, I highly recommend
getting a Lusso spray tan, also available here
in the salon - we even have packages for our
brides. It is honestly thee nicest tan and it is
an Irish brand and vegan friendly! Also book
a trial!!!
Brows
I have now an obsession with brows, I am
officially that person - yes I watch someone on
tv and say “I would love to do their brows.”
For those that cannot join in on the lovely
fluffy natural brow trend because they let their
13 year old friends pluck what mother nature
gave them into two clown arches…..THIS
IS FOR YOU (and I was referencing myselfthanks
Susan)! Phibrows are natural hairstrokes
that create full gorgeous brows – I will eat my
words if anyone thinks otherwise. Again, book
in for a consultation if you are sick of drawing
unsymmetrical brows on daily!
Last but not least
Lashes, if you are going for a very natural look
opt for LVL lashes (available in the salon)
takes 45 minutes and lasts for 6-8 weeks.
Then if you are going on honeymoon, I highly
recommend semi-permanent lashes, I adore the
classics. We supply individual lashes or strip
lashes with our bridal packages.

This well-established business has
grown from strength to strength since
its conception at the end of 2018, as
the Northwest’s first provider of this
service, the additional choices now
available cater to all ages & interests.
The other side to this business is
our wildly popular themed teepee
sleepovers in your own home.
Holding a Covid-19 Reassurance
Mark from Derry City & Strabane
District Council, we offer both styled
& DIY services. Our unforgettable
themed birthday parties & nights in
with friends is the ultimate childhood
experience in the northwest. Treat
your child to a magical sleepover or
pyjama day that will create lasting
memories.
With themed birthday packages for
boys and girls there is lots to choose
from & mixing & matching is never
a problem if you just can’t choose!!!
Both the styled (where we enter your
home & set up) & the DIY service is
fully explained & adapted to make
the experience smooth & simple for
the hirer.
Where did this all start? Inspired by
my three children, I wanted to capture
imaginations & add excitement
to the usual movie nights at home.
I also wanted to solve the age old
issue of what to do with kids when
attending a wedding. It was important
to factor in the aesthetics when
building out our kids area so we’re
very proud that we have managed to
make this pretty & eyecatching whilst
keeping it fun. It is a very different
and totally unique option to decorate
your wedding venue
This really is a service which is worry
and stress free! It’s all about creating
a bit of magic for children, it’s a talking
point, a magical escape in your
home or at an event. One that won’t
be forgotten.
The Sleepy Teepee Club is without
doubt unique, so what are you
waiting for? Book today for your
wedding, communion, bridal shower,
child’s birthday or special event
and you will be creating a magical
memory for you, your family and
friends.
