Mama Muesli is proudly local granola made with love by
Eloïse Steyn. The idea was born during lockdown when she
tried to stay creative with feeding her housebound clan. She
found a chocolate granola recipe online, tweaked it a bit, and
ended up with a winner. Seeing how her family and friends
enjoyed her granola, she decided to give Mama Muesli a go
(which technically speaking is a granola; however, Eloise was
not enamoured with Granny Granola as a name just yet).
First, the million-dollar question, how do you manage to
look as good as you do?
I do have a pool of naughty genes in my family that let me
gain weight easier than some other lucky people. But it’s still
what you put into your mouth which makes you gain weight
(the gene thing is just an excuse). Most people don’t believe
me when they hear that I haven’t been training consistently
for the past three years. People have the misconception that
I have the luxury and time to train for hours every day. That
couldn’t be further from the truth.
My life is a rollercoaster now, and I
have so many balls to juggle. I do
however keep my kitchen clean
and enjoy eating clean 95 percent
of the time. My occasional cheat
would be a glass of good Prosecco
or red wine, and harvest table
treats.
Is eating right as important as
exercise?
Eating right is the most important
aspect – not crash diets, but a
healthy, balanced and consistent
lifestyle. Exercise makes you feel
good, but only a healthy eating
plan will make you see results in
how you look.
Do you consider yourself an
entrepreneur?
Definitely. I’m a lifestyle entrepreneur, and I’m fortunate
to have learnt a lot from my husband, Marius, who is an
unbelievable businessman. Everything we do has some sort
of business aspect to it. It’s the way we live and the way he
grew up.
What have been your greatest achievements thus far?
My greatest professional achievement was in 2016 when
I completed my MBA and won the Miss Universe Fitness
title in Orlando, Florida. I was also working at the time and
honestly do not know how I did it all. My proudest personal
achievement is seeing my daughter grow up as a confident,
healthy, hard-working girl with a kind and beautiful heart.
How did your fitness career begin?
What started as a personal challenge to drop a few pesky
I’ve been to hell and
back with critics and
stereotypes. At first it hurt,
but then I realised that most
people don’t understand
what leading a healthy
lifestyle and preparing for
competitions entail.
kilos quickly turned into a whirlwind and led to fitness
competition success. All of this was obviously much tougher
than it seemed from the outside. My mornings started
at 03:30 and I was lucky to get to bed before midnight –
juggling it all with my marriage, as well as my daughter. The
amount of discipline that went into my eating and training
programme was so intense that I almost burnt out at some
stages of the journey. But, I made the choice, and I did it in
the healthiest way possible, and nothing was going to stop
me! This led to me establishing ZooZLifestyle, a fitness and
lifestyle brand that allows people from
all walks of life to follow my example.
I live the ZooZLifestyle, and I lead by
example. People know this and trust
me because of this.
What great goals do you have for
the future?
I’m pursuing a PhD, and it’s stressful
and very time-consuming. I plan to
complete it by the end of next year,
as I want to use the findings from my
study to take my ZooZLifestyle brand
internationally. I’m also the South
African President of the World Fitness
Federation and I want to make WFF SA
a success. However, one of my biggest
dreams is to have another child.
Tell us something surprising about
yourself.
Most people think I’m this huge
bodybuilder when they see me in photos. In fact, I wear a
size 6/8, weigh 58kg, wear a size 5 shoe, and I’m 1.69m tall.
People are shocked when they see me in real life. I’m also an
introvert, self-conscious about everything about myself, and I
cry when I’m happy, sad, and mad.
Lastly, you believe in defying stereotypes.
After people see my fitness and bodybuilding performances
they might think, ‘What is she doing and why?’ or, ‘This is
too muscular for a woman’, or, ‘Is this what being fit entails?’.
I’ve been to hell and back with critics and stereotypes.
At first it hurt, but then I realised that most people don’t
understand what leading a healthy lifestyle and preparing for
competitions entail. So, for now I focus on helping women to
live an authentic life.
GROUNDED IN
HOPE
For someone not yet 50 years old, Alicia Sherriff’s
achievements are impressive. Not only is she a professor
in clinical and radiation oncology, she also heads the
oncology unit at the Universitas Hospital Annex in
Bloemfontein. Here she speaks to Get It about how
medicine chose her, why she decided to work with cancer
patients, and how hope is a multi-layered thing.
licia grew up in Monte Vista, Cape Town, a serious, studious
girl. “I took life very seriously and from early on was
focused and academically inclined with a passion for art
and maths.” Her parents, whom she describes as her
“greatest supporters”, were employed in the banking
sector and with her love for maths it was assumed
that Alicia would study accounting. She, however,
feared that her desire for caring and her passion for
interacting with people would not be fulfilled if
she pursued a career in accounting. When the
time came to make a decision about what to
study, Alicia realised that medicine combined
science, precision and compassion. An event
that further cemented her decision to study
medicine occurred during her teenage
years. Her cousin, who was the same
age as her, was diagnosed with rectal
cancer. “As a family we became part of a
screening programme at Stellenbosch
University for familial polyposis. This created an awareness in me about cancers and
the impact they could have on lives – young to old.”
After doing her houseman year at Kimberley Hospital, Alicia packed her bags to
work in England for a year as a resident medical officer. “I already knew that I would
like to specialise in oncology. Therefore, I requested to be placed at hospitals
where there were oncology and palliative care facilities. I got the opportunity to
assist in theatre, gave chemotherapies, managed side effects, put up chemo drips,
carried bed pans, and sat at the bedside of terminal patients while they told this
foreign doctor about the life they had lived,” she remembers.
getitmagazine.co.za/bloemfontein

While in England, Alicia asked around and was told
that the best place to specialise in clinical and radiation
oncology was at the University of the Free State.
Fortuitously, there was an opening for her to specialise
and she returned from England earlier to begin her
path with what she calls her “special oncology family
at Universitas Annex”. Her “oncology family” included
the Head of Department, Prof. Louis Goedhals, who
became a great mentor to her. “The friends and
colleagues who I have had (fellow registrars, fellow
specialists, nursing staff, radiographers, administrative
staff, cleaners and porters) over the past 23 years have
shaped me, supported me through tears and laughter
on a personal and professional level, and while some
have moved far away, the bonds that we’ve built will
stand the test of time.”
Alicia, who comes across as having zero ego, remarks
that she has learnt so much from her patients and
their families over the years, especially regarding
hope. “Hope has a few layers,” she explains.
“There is the science of cancer therapy where
there are continuous new developments in
systemic therapy and new radiation therapy
techniques, which are exciting, and which
requires us to be constant students
within our profession. Then there is the
hope of human nature where difficult
experiences bring greater awareness in
so many of our patients. The other fact
that you must make your own early
on in your career as an oncologist
is our departmental motto: To
CURE sometimes, to RELIEVE
often, to COMFORT always.”
But, Alicia is more than an
oncology professor, she is
also a daughter, a wife and a
mother, and a passionate animal
and nature lover. She met her
husband, a mechanical engineer, in her
first year of specialisation. “We got married
in 2000 and were blessed with a precious
redhead daughter in 2007. My dad calls her
‘Vlammetjie’.” Alicia says their daughter shares
her parents love for maths, “so that is where
her future lies”. My curiosity is piqued, and
I wonder aloud if ‘Vlammetjie’ is as serious
as her mother was as a child? “I often
wish I was not as hard on myself as a
child and was a bit more carefree.”
Yet, despite her earnest, bookish
childhood, it’s clear that it did not
douse the flame of hope in Alicia
Sherriff’s heart.
Jeakita Bodenstein was a dramatic, creative child who
longed to be an actress or a fashion designer.
Her mother, on the other hand, felt Jeakita would make an
exceptional makeup artist.
And mommy dearest, of course, was absolutely spot on!
Here Jeakita shares her story with Get It…
Jeakita’s parents raised her to follow her dreams. Initially
this meant owning a gym and being a personal trainer. “I
loved it, but something was lacking. I missed my creative
side, so I decided to start doing makeup and hairstyling
on weekends. My makeup career picked up so fast that I
decided to make it my full time job.”
Mastering the art of areola tattooing
Jeakita specialises in lips, brows, liners, and areola tattoos.
Asked about the areoIa tattooing, she explains, “I’ve always
been artistic and a quick learner. I started doing areola tattoos
in 2018 from watching others do it. But it wasn’t until 2019
when I did a course with Roberta Peixoto – the Brazilian
queen of areola tattoos – that I was able to do much more
detailed and specialised work.” Areola tattoos are done on
a woman who has recovered from breast cancer or who has
undergone a mastectomy and breast reconstruction. What
Jeakita does is often the last step to a full recovery. “The patient
needs to be fully recovered and free of cancer,” she says. “After this, she
undergoes her reconstruction (if she wishes) and about a year later her doctor
does a check-up and gives us the thumbs-up to go ahead with the process.”
Jeakita uses the same digital device for areola tattooing as she uses for lips, liner
and powder/ombre brows, but the procedure involved is different. “I use different
settings and work with different needles and pigments. I play around with sizes,
10 Get It Bloemfontein October 2021 getitmagazine.co.za/bloemfontein

life-chancing
ART
configurations, hand speed and device settings to create
different textures and effects – much like painting with a
paintbrush.”
Areola tattooing holds a special place in Jeakita’s heart
because she feels that she is part of a huge step in a
cancer survivor’s journey. “I’m part of closing a chapter
of pain and struggle and welcoming a new chapter. It’s
rewarding on an emotional level, but it’s also creative and
artistic, and it allows me to be more expressive, creating
depths and tones for more realistic work.” Is this procedure
more intimate than the other procedures she does? “It
is intimate, and some women are more emotional than
others. But, it’s so important to remember that these
women are survivors and nothing can stop them now.
They’re not scared of needles, nor are they scared of pain.
They’ve been though much worse and being in my studio
is exciting for them. It’s a celebration after a long and
painful process.”
Never stop learning and growing
The golden thread that runs through Jeakita’s life is that
she never rests on her laurels. “I feel you can never get
comfortable. Always be open to learn and grow, and
keep on sharpening your skills, whatever they are.” This
innate desire to be the best in the business led Jeakita to
being chosen by a German company, Amiea, to represent
them as an ambassador in 2019. “This opened so many
doors for me. I travelled to China where I was a speaker
at a conference in Shanghai and I presented a lip tattoo
masterclass for a large group of technicians.” Jeakita also
travelled to Vietnam three times to work in a spa. “I was
in Brazil where I attended one of the biggest permanent
makeup congresses. I also attended a masterclass
presented by one of my idols, Mariana Freitas. After this, I
took part in an international competition and went on to
compete in Berlin at the Permanent International Congress
with the best in the business. It was such a great honour!”
According to Jeakita, traveling for work was something she
never thought would happen for her. “I will always cherish
these experiences and opportunities.”
Whether it’s travelling abroad or sharing the journey of a
cancer survivor, Jeakita continues to expand her horizons,
and in doing so, helps others to grow.
Angel
Food touched by an
Angel prepared one of her signature dishes for us:
Bacon and Brussels Sprouts Salad
Ingredients:
Olive oil – ½ cup; Lemon juice – ¼ cup; Garlic, crushed – 1-2, Salt and pepper
– to taste, Brussels Sprouts – 400g, Bacon – six strips, Pumpkin seeds – ¼ cup;
Parmesan cheese – 60g
Method:
In a small jar with a lid, add the oil, lemon juice, crushed garlic, salt and pepper.
Cover the jar and shake until the ingredients have combined. Place in the
fridge until you are ready to use it.
Cook the bacon as you normally would and set it aside to cool.
Prepare the Brussels Sprouts by using a mandolin cutter (watch your fingers!)
or food processor. If you do not have these tools, you can do it manually by
holding on to the stem and carefully slicing the sprouts into thin pieces to
shred.
Toast your pumpkin seeds.
In a large salad bowl, toss together the Brussels Sprouts, most of the pumpkin
seeds, the bacon bits and the cheese. Drizzle the dressing onto the salad and
toss again. Top with the remaining pumpkin seeds, bacon and cheese.
ROSES
Love and romance ... and a pretty rose garden.
Yes please. But this flower offers so much more. They’re
also extremely beneficial in skincare, with plenty of
products derived from the rose plant that
give exceptional results.
REN Rose O¹² Moisture
Rose oil
Unlike Rosehip oil, this oil comes from the petals of the
flower and not the seeds. While also containing antibacterial,
antiviral and antifungal properties, this oil also has effects that
extend beyond skincare. After application to the skin, studies
have shown results such as: decreased anxiety and stress, eased
depressive symptoms, and relief from menstrual pain. To use rose
oil, it can be lightly dabbed onto the skin, added to a diffuser or
dropped into a warm bath.
The A-Z of
comparing
cancer benefits
Cancer treatment on its own is expensive, and then there are also the
hidden costs linked to lifestyle changes, employing a carer, and the cost of
transport to treatment centres. So, how do you choose a cancer benefit
that’s right for you and compare apples with apples?
Rosehip oil
Rosehip oil comes from the seeds
of the wild rose bush and is high in
Vitamin A and essential fatty acids.
This oil has regeneration properties,
fixing dry and damaged skin as well
as reducing signs of aging. It is also
useful for scar tissue, with the ability to reduce signs
of stretch marks. It even has antiviral and antibacterial
properties due to the phenols that it contains. It is said
that Kate Middleton is a fan of rosehip oil, using it in her
daily skincare regime. It has multiple benefits, including
hydrating and brightening your skin, moisturising,
boosting, collagen formation, reducing inflammation
and hyperpigmentation, and boosting overall immunity.
You can either simply apply a few drops to your skin and
rub in, or add it to your moisturiser.
Rose Geranium
This one isn’t really from
the rose plant at all. The
oil comes from a certain
geranium plant with leaves
that smell strongly of roses. It
is often used in cosmetics and fragrances due to its sweet
smell, as well as its favourable qualities, including its antiaging
properties, assistance in healing, its pain relief and
anti-anxiety properties, and it’s great at removing dead
skin cells. To use, simply dilute with some water and apply
to skin. Alternatively, you can add it to a warm bath or use
in a diffuser.
R150 from soil.co.za
There is no one-size-fits-all benefit, but the starting point is to understand
what types of cancers are covered under various cancer benefit options,
says Nonkululeko Zungu, Product Support Consultant for Sanlam
Individual Life.
Your choice of cover will depend on you, your budget, your family history
with cancer and so on. A qualified financial adviser can guide you on a
benefit that meets your needs and gives you value for money.
Consider this when you compare benefits:
• Which cancers are covered – at what stages – and what amount will
the insurer pay?
Remember that not all insurers cover the same types of cancer or pay
out the same percentages of the cover amount for a particular stage of
cancer. All insurers must, however, indicate what percentages they pay
out for various stages of cancer.
In superior cancer benefits, the percentage which is paid out is usually
linked to both the severity (stage) of the cancer as well as to its likely
impact on a person’s lifestyle. For example, Sanlam’s Cancer Benefits
pays 100% for certain aggressive cancers even in their early stages.
“To give clients peace of mind, yet avoid long lists of specific types of
cancers that are covered, some insurers include a catch-all claim event,”
says Nonkululeko Zungu, Product Support Consultant for Sanlam
Individual Life. When a cancer benefit includes a catch-all claim event,
cancers that are not specifically listed may also be covered.
• Price:
Compare premiums and understand what you’ll pay as an initial
premium, but make sure you ask about premium increases later on. It is
important to understand for how long premiums will remain unchanged.
If you qualify for a discount from the insurer, ask whether you will
continue to enjoy that discount should your circumstances change, for
example, should you stop going to the gym or if you cancel some of
your other policies with the same insurer. If these types of changes will
affect your cancer benefit premium, make sure you understand by how
much the premium may increase.
• Also consider:
- That the level of underwriting (health questionnaires, blood and other
tests) will most likely impact the premium
- That there may be exclusions linked to conditions or circumstances
under which the benefit will not pay out
- That waiting periods may apply before you can qualify to claim under a
benefit
To find out more about the Emergency
Unit, Get It Bloemfontein asked Life
Rosepark Hospital some questions.
What are the operational working hours for an
Emergency Unit?
An Emergency Unit is open 24 hours a day, seven days a
week, should emergency care be required.
When should I visit the Emergency Unit?
Seek emergency treatment for life-threatening situations
that require immediate medical attention, including the
following: head injuries, chest pain, stroke symptoms,
breathing difficulty, uncontrolled bleeding, sudden
or severe pain, significant burns or broken bones.
Illness or injury can suddenly occur without warning;
hence everyone must know what to expect when
they arrive. The Life Rosepark Hospital Emergency Unit
provides emergency care for patients with traumatic
injuries, serious illnesses or other problems that require
immediate treatment. The staff consists of doctors,
nurses and other medical professionals who follow
specific procedures to provide the care you need as
soon as possible.
If I have a medical emergency at home or have been
involved in a motor vehicle accident, whom should I call?
It is important to have a medical emergency number
listed on your mobile device for your specific region.
Life Rosepark Hospital has a highly qualified ALS
paramedic team (Life EMS) that will assist you with your
medical emergency. By phoning the 24-hour national
emergency number for Life EMS 0860 123 367, you will
PROMOTION
Life Rosepark Hospital’s Emergency Unit - fast & efficient
Can you explain the triage system – and how your unit
operates?
Triage is a clinical process that determines how severe your
condition is and how fast you need to be taken care of.
You will be referred to the emergency room if your condition
is life- threatening and requires immediate attention. If it
is found that your illness or injury is less severe, you will be
asked to enter the patient registration first and then return
to the waiting area. Our triage process ensures that the best
treatment occurs as quickly as possible.
How long I can expect to wait?
The waiting time also depends on how many other patients
are being treated at the same time. Many patients arrive by
ambulance, so you might not see them entering the facility.
It is important to remember that people with severe or lifethreatening
medical emergencies are treated first. People
with minor or moderate injuries or illnesses will be treated as
soon as possible.
If a bed is available immediately, you will be taken through
by a nursing staff member to the treatment area for an
emergency medical examination. If a bed is not available, you
may be asked to sit in the waiting area until a bed becomes
available. The emergency doctor will examine you as soon
as possible. However, expect a delay in doctor assessment
should a more critical patient arrive suddenly. Should your
condition change, our nursing practitioners will monitor you
and ensure you receive treatment
How long will the patient be in the emergency room?
Your specific emergency, illness, or injury determines
whether the treatment is simple or complex and how long it
will take. The time required for medical treatment is different
for each patient. Some may have an extensive medical
getitmagazine.co.za/bloemfontein
history that needs to be reviewed. Others may need x-rays,
laboratory tests, and other diagnostic tests. In some cases
the Emergency Unit doctor might need to consult with a
specialist (cardiologist, radiologist, neurologist, etc.).
Your treatment can consist of the commencement of
an infusion, administration of medication, application of
bandages or splinting and sometimes major or minor
surgery. As indicated, the presence of other critically ill
patients in the unit can also affect the time of treatment.
By whom are patients in the Emergency Unit treated?
The care that you will receive will be rendered by the nursing
and medical staff. Registered nurses are either trauma
qualified or have completed the following courses: Advanced
Cardiac Life Support, Paediatric Advance Life Support and
also International Trauma Life Support for advance providers.
Our doctors in the emergency room are board-certified and
trained in Advance Life Support. You may also come into
contact with the phlebotomist who will draw your blood,
clinical technicians and radiologists who will perform special
investigations ordered by the EU doctor in order to assist in
formalising a diagnosis and treatment.
Can patients be accompanied by family or friends?
We understand the importance of family and friends in
an emergency, however, we still have to comply with the
current Legislative Covid-19 regulations to prevent disease
transmission.
For that reason we limit the number of persons who
accompany the patient into the Emergency Unit, taking the
patient’s needs into consideration. Please note that hospital
staff are prohibited from disclosing information about you to
third parties without your permission, as prescribed by the
POPI Act.
SCREENING GUIDE
Cachet-Nel Inc - Chemotherapy, Radiation, Brachytherapy
Breast and cervical cancer are the most common cancers in women in South Africa. Women face an approximate 12% overall
lifetime risk for developing breast cancer, which accounts for the most frequent cause of cancer deaths in women throughout the
world. Early detection of breast and cervical cancer is important, as the early stages can be cured and are more easily managed.
Latest recommendations are to start breast screening from the age of 40 years. Annual mammograms are recommended between
the ages of 45 and 55 years, thereafter, a transition to mammograms every other year. Remember to be screened younger than 40
years if there are suspicious signs and symptoms or risk factors for breast cancer.
Cervical cancer can be detected and treated early by regular Pap smear tests by a GP or gynaecologist. The frequency of the Pap
smear depends on age as well as previous Pap smear results and other risk factors. It is generally advisable to start having Pap
smears once you become sexually active.
With modern advances in chemotherapy, radiation and surgery, cancer can be treated successfully if it is detected early. Screening
is important in order to improve the success of the treatment after early detection.
mammographers who have the necessary expertise to provide you with
the best possible care.
A mammogram is one of the most important tools available for early
detection and diagnosis, as well as monitoring of breast cancer.
A mammogram is a special x-ray, that is specifically designed to
penetrate through breast tissue. It is especially useful in identifying early
breast carcinomas and is used from the age of 40 years as a diagnostic
screening instrument.
Our mammography department boasts a state-of-the-art
mammography machine with tomographic capabilities, providing
high-quality screening (x-ray of a breast). We also have a high-resolution
breast ultrasound machine, making ultrasound-guided biopsies as well
as placement of markers in the breast in suspicious lesions possible.
Should you wish to come for a mammogram a referral from your
physician is not necessary. Please make an appointment to reduce
waiting time. Your medical aid card and identification document will be
required.
We recommend annual screening from 40 years of age, especially in
cases of a family history of breast carcinoma.
PROMOTION
Futura Financial Services, an accounting firm
based in Bloemfontein, is a small company with
big potential. It aims to be a one-stop service for
its clients – a firm where clients can find help and
guidance with all their financial needs.
Joanita Coetzee’s husband founded the company
in 2003, and since his untimely passing last year,
she has taken the reins and poured her focus into
the company on a full-time basis. She has been
building and expanding the company by creating
close relationships with clients and service providers,
offering her clients the best possible solutions to
their individual business challenges.
The pandemic also afforded Coetzee the
opportunity to fully focus on the company by
continuing to build the legacy her husband
left behind. She is currently also studying parttime
towards her master’s degree in business
administration. She believes this will help the
company reach new heights and enable it to offer
even better advice and guidance to clients.
The Futura Financial Services team is currently made
up of a small group of women who strive to make
a difference in the lives of their clients. Coetzee is a
registered chartered accountant and tax practitioner,
Liezel Grobler is Coetzee’s personal assistant as well
as the office manager, Leonora Smith is the office
clerk, while Lydia Mosase is responsible for the
housekeeping of the office.
The team’s members believe even though
accounting is all about numbers, they do not treat a
client as another number, they treat every client as a
person who matters.
The company lives by the motto “Access your future
profits today”, and therefore its passion runs deep
for helping clients reach their desired financial goals.
The aim is to make each client feel as if they are
the firm’s only client. Personal attention, care and
integrity are the core values of the company.
As one of their clients noted on their Facebook page
– “Great team and good service”.
