KICK-OFF 3PM

Ashville Holdings is rooted in construction and our history has morphed
from boots on the ground company found itself to with in-house very few basements to development and government
dig. So, Louisy went looking for work elsewhere.
infrastructure projects. I used to drive
“I knew Ashville who my building competitors Holdings were, as I encompasses every element in
would see their names on tenders,” he says. “So I the lorry, and
approach worked, and one tipper-grab very soon
became three tipper-grabs and a tipper.
“Then Wandsworth banned grabs from taking
out of skips, and I began to lose work,” remembers
Louisy. “So we started buying skip lorries too.”
This was quickly followed by another change
in direction. “We would arrive at a job only to be
told we couldn’t load as a concrete lorry was there,
and that the concrete lorry was more important.
So we bought a volumetric concrete lorry! So then
we had a concrete lorry, grabs, tippers and skips,”
says Louisy. “But then when we turned up with the
concrete lorry, people were telling us that the pump
wasn’t there, so we’d have to wait. So we bought a
A pair of 4x2 grabs were soon added to the
fast-expanding and increasingly varied fleet,
allowing Ashville to operate in some of the mews
and narrow streets of Chelsea. And more recently
the company made the move into artic tippers,
with the purchase of a pair of Scania XT R500 6x2
tractors with Kelberg tipping trailers.
But there was still one serious hurdle to overcome,
as Louisy explains: “If we priced a job, and two
HOOPS
The Gaffer
FIRSTLY, MAY I EXTEND A WARM WELCOME TO FRANKIE
McAVOY, HIS STAFF, PLAYERS, AND ALL ASSOCIATED
WITH PRESTON NORTH END FOOTBALL CLUB.
P
reston arrive here on the
back of a hard-earned draw
against a very strong Stoke
City team, and they’ve delivered an
excellent five game unbeaten run.
There’s no doubting the quality they
possess in the squad, with a nice
blend of good technical players and
evident physicality and they’ll present
yet another very tough challenge
here this afternoon. We look forward
to meeting the challenge, to a good
encounter and to sharing a postgame
drink with Frankie and his staff.
Tuesday night saw us return
to winning ways with a solid
performance against a good
Birmingham City side. In shocking
weather conditions, Birmingham
started the brighter of the two
teams and created an early
opportunity. However, from this
point, we started to control the
game and looked dangerous going
forward. Both goals came at a good
time in each half and the players
showed a very evident defensive
resilience to stand up to a series
of Birmingham attacks to keep a
welcome clean sheet.
It was good to see Andre Dozzell
get another hour under his belt,
and he showed some real quality
to demonstrate how well he’s
adapting to the demands of the
Championship. Likewise, Jimmy
Dunne delivered another very solid
90 minutes, coming hard on the
heels of two strong displays last
week against Everton and West
Bromwich Albion. Again, it’s good to
see us show the strength in depth
we have to deal with the demands of
this division.
I refer to ‘demands’, and I’m very
conscious that I’ve mentioned this
subject many times previously,
but the challenges presented by
playing so many games in such a
short period of time must not be
underestimated nor ignored.
The start of the season saw the
squad play seven games in 21 days
into the first international break. This
second block of matches sees the
players face seven games in 22 days
before the next international break
which starts this weekend. The next
block will see us face another seven
games in 21 days, which includes
MESSAGE ON THE QPR BOND
AMIT BHATIA
CHAIRMAN
OUR WORD IS OUR BOND
News broke on Monday of planning permission being granted for the new QPR training
ground at Heston. The Club also revealed that in addition to Shareholder investment, a
bond would be issued as part of the financing plan for the development. We wanted to
know more, so we asked QPR Chairman Amit Bhatia for the details…
The Chairman set the scene by discussing long-term plans:
“As a Board, we have a clear vision for QPR – deliver
competitive and entertaining football while ensuring that
the Club becomes self-sustainable. It may not happen
overnight, but we believe it is achievable with investment in
a number of key areas, none more vital than a new training
ground.”
He explained further how this is a change from the QPR
of a few years ago: “We don’t have the ability to go and
pay the big bucks in the transfer market to try and buy
success like we used to. We have to build a youth system.
So we want to build a state-of-the-art training facility to
bring people through the system who then play for the first
team.”
Having rented training space for so long, the proposals for
Heston look impressive. Seven pitches including indoor and
all-weather; top class gym; medical and rehab facilities;
performance analysis, dining and recreation areas – it’s got
the lot. The total cost of the facility will be £20m.
“A new training facility is expensive,” commented the
Chairman. “So our idea is to fund it some amount with
shareholder investment, but some amount by issuing a
bond. When you think about sustainable future for QPR – for
any business – you always try to look for the most attractive
ways of financing something, and in this case, a bond
would be able to provide that.”
A bond is effectively a form of borrowing by a company
seeking to raise funds from investors, promising to pay
regular interest until a set repayment date, in this case after
five years. It will not be a suitable investment for everyone,
but the Chairman believes it will be attractive to many.
“There are lots of people who I think would like to be
involved with helping to build the future of their football
club, to feel that they have an involvement in the future
success of the club.”
DETAILS OF THE QPR BOND:
the Carabao Cup fixture on the
Tuesday before playing Nottingham
Forest on the Friday. In addition,
we face a trip to Cardiff City to play
on the Wednesday evening before
then returning in the early hours of
Thursday morning, to then travel
to Blackpool on the Friday for the
Saturday game.
It’s not the fact that the players
cannot be ready for each and every
match; they’re professionals and
work diligently to ensure they’re best
prepared for every fixture. It’s more
the fatigue element and the impact
this can have on injury. Our game
against Birmingham saw us with four
players unavailable, three with longterm
injuries, whilst a fifth was on the
bench recovering from the demands
of the WBA encounter.
If we continue to constantly
challenge athletes in such a way, we’ll
continue to see a steady increase
in the number of long-term injuries.
The authorities must surely look at
the scheduling and see what can be
done to better assist the players with
this key issue.
At the end of the day, we want the
best quality of end product for the
supporters to enjoy. Losing key
players to injury will simply dilute this.
Finally, despite such bad weather on
Tuesday and with the petrol crisis
seemingly at its peak, we once again
had large numbers of supporters in
the stadium giving fantastic backing
to the side. I apologise for repeating
myself, but this support is so vital
to the team and plays such a big
part in bringing both energy and a
feel-good factor to the club. Sincere
thanks as always to every QPR fan!
Enjoy the game!
PLANNING PERMISSION
APPROVED
THE London Borough of Hounslow has approved
planning permission for QPR’s new training ground
in Heston. The club acquired the 27-acre site back
in December.
Pitch works, which will include undersoil heating, are
expected to take nine months to complete. Work on
the new training ground building will start before the
end of the calendar year.
QPR CEO Lee Hoos said: “This is fantastic news for
the club’s medium and long-term future.
“Investment in infrastructure, such as a bespoke
training ground, is the greatest indication of an
ownership which is here for the long term and
genuinely believes in the growth of their club.
“The owners will be personally covering a significant
portion of the cost and we will also be issuing a Bond
to assist with the financing.”
The state-of-the-art facility, which will
accommodate the first team, Under-23s and
academy squads, is being delivered by a project
team including planning advisors hgh Consulting,
architects Studio Zoppini Architetti and global
design engineering consultants Buro Happold.
M
OSES, we’re speaking before
Tuesday’s game with Birmingham
so can’t comment on that, but Friday’s
fixture at West Brom was a bit of a
sickener, wasn’t it?
We knew what sort of threats West Brom
would pose, and we’d worked on them in
training. For 70-odd minutes we nullified
that threat and stopped what they
wanted to do to us. We kept putting the
ball down the side of them which proved
very effective. But in the last 15 minutes
I think we switched off and two errors
allowed them to win it.
You had a hand in Andre Gray’s opener
in the first minute. We couldn’t have
wished for a better start, could we?
It was a great beginning to the match for
us. It quietened their fans down which
is something we wanted to do early on.
Normally we dominate games by passing
and moving the ball around, but we had
to go a bit more direct at West Brom.
For the most part it worked and we
controlled the game. It might not have
been that pretty to watch but sometimes
you have to mix it up in this division.
You played with Andre at Brentford.
How big a player could he be for QPR
this season?
He can be a massive player for QPR. He
adds quality to our strike force and he’s
a great option for the manager to have
in games where we need to get in behind
the opposition defence. He’s a willing
runner and gives us something a bit
different to what we already have.
Seny was obviously at fault for the
equaliser, but after the number of times
he’s won QPR points, we can’t be too
critical of him…
We’re all human and we make mistakes.
It’s how you recover from them. He’s a
great lad and I’m sure he’ll react in the
right way.
I felt like I needed
to hit the reset button,
clear my mind, and have a
fresh start
Are you enjoying life at QPR?
Very much. The main thing for me was
to be playing week in, week out, in my
position which I haven’t had for the last
couple of years. I’m getting that under a
manager who knows me well. I think my
performances will keep improving the
more I play.
Was a lack of first-team chances
why you decided to leave Sheffield
Wednesday?
The manager wanted me to stay but I
felt like I needed to hit the reset button,
clear my mind, and have a fresh start. A
lot went on at Sheffield Wednesday, on
and off the pitch, so it was time for me to
start again.
You initially came here on trial - was
that a nervous time in that you needed
to impress in order to get a contract?
Not really as I’d worked with the gaffer
before, so he knew what I could do. It was
more about showing him my body was
able to handle the stresses of playing
regular football again. I was confident
it was, and I worked on some fitness
stuff in the summer which helped to
get me where I needed to be. I was
always confident I’d impress and then
everything else would follow.
As you said, you played under the gaffer
before. Has he changed at all since your
time at Brentford?
A little bit. It was an enjoyable time under
him at Brentford in our first season in the
Championship, but I’d say he mixes up
his game plans more now. He knows his
There’s no ceiling on
what we can do, it depends
on how much we want it
teams need to change their style of play
sometimes and exploit the weaknesses
of the opposition. For example, at
West Brom, we knew it wouldn’t be a
footballing game. We knew there was
no point trying to play out from the back
and break lines; we needed to get the
ball down the side to create chances. He
believes this QPR squad is good enough
to do something special this season and
is determined to help us achieve it.
And is playing wing-back a position
you’re comfortable in?
It’s a role the modern-day full-back is
used to. When the football at QPR is free
flowing, it’s a joy to play in.
It was tough during
those two years out. I
didn’t know whether I’d
come out the other side
You missed two years of football
through injury when you were at Hull
- does that make you appreciate what
you’ve got now even more?
It certainly does. Being back playing every
week is a massive blessing. It was tough
during those two years. I didn’t know
whether I’d come out the other side. To
be playing again, I just have to thank God.
But I also give praise to myself for showing
that resilience to keep pushing and
fighting to get to this position.
How hard was it mentally being
sidelined for so long?
It was tough. I kind of went into a mode
where I just got on with things. There
were days when I found it hard, and
things weren’t going to plan. Before I
knew it the two years were up. In the end
it was all worth it as it adds to the story.
So there were times when you thought
you might not make it back?
A few. When the injuries kept reoccurring,
I didn’t know what was going on. No one
could get to the bottom of it and give
me an answer. I saw different people,
but the same thing kept being said. I did
lose a little bit of hope, but it was one of
life’s tests and thankfully I’ve come out
fighting and I’m fully fit once more.
What do you feel QPR can achieve this
season?
There’s no ceiling on what we can do, it
depends on how much we want it. If we
want it enough, we can achieve something
special. There’s too much talent and
quality in this team for us not to.
Columnist
THE FOUNDING EDITOR OF QPR FANSITE ‘R’ GENERATION
DISCUSSES THE LATEST GOINGS ON IN W12…
W
atching us beat Everton on penalties last
week was one of the best nights I’ve had
at the KPFS in years. The atmosphere
was electric. The place was rocking. And Rafa
Benitez was there too - what a guy.
I’ve missed nights like those. That feeling of
community that spawns from the unity of noise,
all chanting the same words for the same team.
It’s a special feeling when you’re reminded you’re
not the only one burdened with this bizarre
footballing commitment.
I’d go as far to say that the KPFS hasn’t been
as alive as the Everton tie since the play-off
semi-final back in 2014. Maybe I’m just mixing
up two images with the common theme of a
Charlie Austin brace, but it really felt special to
be back in W12 again. I remember watching that
semi-final. I must’ve been 13 or 14, a pivotal
moment in your life as a football supporter.
Surrounded by mainly Premier League fans, on
the cusp of adulthood, you sort of need to make
the decision as to whether or not you’re going
to take the plunge for the next 90 years of your
life and support little old QPR on their merry
adventures through the land of English football.
It’s the choice of either regular European football
with Cristiano Ronaldo or Tuesday nights in
Coventry with Dominic Ball. Easy choice, no? That
play-off game certainly played its part in securing
my lifetime sentence in the stands. It’s nights
like that that reinforce our commitment to our
club. It’s nights like that that pay off the hard work
of the midweek bore draws and the first-round
knockouts. It’s nights like that that amplify our
love for Queens Park Rangers.
We don’t make it easy for ourselves though, do
we? We never have. Looking forward, it’s probable
we need to start having some more comfortable
results. We’re a fighting team, which is great, but
what do we do when there’s no need to fight? It
seems our highest quality of football is fuelled
by the need to prove ourselves. Middlesbrough,
Reading, Barnsley, all games that didn’t need
to be as much of a struggle as they were.
Bournemouth too, despite the result, could’ve
been a comfortable day at work but one costly
mistake threw the whole thing out of our hands.
We need to tighten up to make sure we can
compete consistently because consistency is
the key to this division. The Championship is
a marathon, and we have to maintain a steady
pace to finish with good time. The fact that we’re
slipping up a bit now is good, because it means
we have lots of time to pick ourselves up and
avoid slipping later. There’s so much ability in this
QPR team, so much fight, so much spirit. We now
just have to turn fight and spirit into goals and
points, consistently - there’s a lot more to come.
OPPOSITION
OVERVIEW
O P P O S I T I O N O V E R V I E W
A founder member of the Football League, Preston North End
have a rich history.
The original ‘Invincibles’ after winning the inaugural Division One
without losing a game in 1888/89, they also landed the FA Cup
that term.
Preston held on to their league title the following campaign but
their only major success since has been their 1938 FA Cup final
victory over Huddersfield Town.
Since being relegated from the top flight in 1961, PNE have never
made it back, falling as far as the fourth tier in the mid-80s.
They’ve established themselves in the Championship in recent years,
although a run of poor results under Alex Neil last term saw the Scot
dismissed with his assistant Frankie McAvoy taking the reins.
An inconsistent start to the current campaign sees North
End hovering in mid-table as they head to W12 this afternoon.
FOLLOWING the departure of
Alex Neil in March, assistant
boss Frankie McAvoy was
handed the manager’s job at
Preston on a caretaker basis.
An impressive haul of five
victories from the remaining
eight games of the campaign
saw the Scot named North
End’s permanent gaffer in
the summer.
Despite never playing football
professionally, McAvoy, who
hails from Bellshill in
Lanarkshire, began his
coaching career in
Dunfermline Athletic’s
academy in 2003, joining
Hamilton Academical two
years later. He later became
academy director prior to
being named first-team coach
when Neil took charge of the
Accies in 2013.
McAvoy followed Neil to
Norwich City in 2015 and then
to Deepdale two years later.
The towering 22-year-old,
who was previously part of
deal at Deepdale.
Jakobsen never made a
first-team appearance for
Derby, spending time on
loan in the Netherlands at
VVV-Venlo prior to a return
to his homeland with
Randers in 2018 where
after 15 league goals in 65
games, North End
swooped for his signature.
He struggled for goals in
his first season in the
Championship but has
begun the new campaign in
fine fettle with seven
strikes in 13 league and
cup appearances to date.
Incredible, isn’t it? Forty years, my
God! When I look back, obviously I
played alongside some fabulous
players in that period. There were
some great characters in the dressing
room. But that time has just flown by. I
can’t believe it’s been that long.
In the third round, we were drawn at
home to Middlesbrough. They were
in Division One and Rangers were in
Division Two. So, we started our cup
run as underdogs, didn’t we?
That’s right, yes. Middlesbrough were
a good side at the time. They were
very strong defensively. Tough and
hard to beat. They had some
outstanding results in Division One
during that period. But, to be fair, we
had a great squad at Rangers that
Terry Venables put together. Not just
a great squad of players, though. The
tactics, the spirit and the whole
feeling within QPR was phenomenal in
the 1980s.
After that 1-1 draw, it was a midweek
trip up to Middlesbrough’s old
Ayresome Park. Rangers won 3-2
with Warren Neill grabbing the
winning goal for us in extra-time. It
was a stunning victory, wasn’t it?
A fabulous win. Ayresome Park wasn’t
an easy place to go to. I’m from the
North East myself - Seaham just
south of Sunderland. So, I’ve always
recognised Middlesbrough as a good
club for all the top players and top
managers that they’ve had over the
years. Therefore, it was a shock for
them when we won the replay. It was a
difficult game for QPR, particularly
after drawing at home. It was a hard
HOOPS
journey up there in midweek so for us
to come away with the win that night
was fantastic.
In the fourth round we were drawn
away to Blackpool who were in
Division Four. We nearly lost that
game, but it finished 0-0. Then the
replay took place at Loftus Road with
Clive Allen scoring four times as we
ran out 5-1 winners…
I remember the first game up at
Blackpool. It was so windy that Peter
Hucker couldn’t get his goal kicks out
of the penalty area. The ball kept on
being blown back to him! Again, not
an easy place to go to. When the wind
blows up there it takes you off your
feet! We were up against the
elements, and it was all about just
getting a result of some sort, which
we did. Then we went from strength
to strength in the replay at Loftus
Road. Clive Allen and Simon Stainrod
were the difference that night. They
were a good partnership up front with
different assets to their game. To this
day, I still believe Clive is the best
finisher I ever played with. That
includes people like Gary Lineker.
Clive could score with both feet and
was great in the air although he
probably didn’t have that speed of
Lineker. But what a finisher Clive was.
A top player.
In the fifth round, we beat Grimsby
3-1 at Loftus Road. They were
several places below us in Division
Two and it was a comprehensive
victory, wasn’t it?
We were on a roll by then and the
confidence was flowing. We’d come
through tough games before that in
our cup run and so we saw a home tie
against Grimsby as almost like a
breath of fresh air. It was a good
opportunity to get to the next round.
Even so, we didn’t treat it lightly and
we didn’t take Grimsby for granted.
But we delivered fairly easily in that
game I thought.
Do you remember listening to the
radio on a Monday lunchtime for the
live FA Cup draws back in those
days?
I can’t remember that! It was 40
years ago!
Then it was on to Crystal Palace at
home in the quarter-finals. They
were also in Division Two and it was a
huge needle game as a number of
QPR people like Terry Venables, Mike
Flanagan, Clive Allen and yourself
had all previously been at Palace…
Yes, you’re right. I started my career
with some great years playing for
Palace. We won the FA Youth Cup
when I was a teenager there in two
consecutive seasons in 1977 and
1978. I scored the only goal in both
finals against Everton and Aston Villa
respectively. Then a number of lads
progressed into a terrific first team at
Selhurst Park. It became known as the
‘Team of the 80s’ with stars like Vince
Hilaire, Billy Gilbert, Peter Nicholas
and Kenny Sansom. After I moved to
QPR, it was a huge fixture for me to
play against Palace in the FA Cup
quarter-final. It was a hard game as
Palace still had a good side with plenty
of experience in there having just
been relegated from Division One the
previous season. But with several QPR
men having previously been at Palace,
we knew all about them and what to
expect on the day. In saying that, they
also knew all about us. It was very
tight throughout the match. Nip and
tuck. Nobody was giving anything
away. Fortunately for us, Clive Allen
was there again to brilliantly score the
only goal of the game with a couple of
minutes to go. Then he ran nearly the
full length of the pitch to celebrate in
front of the Palace fans. When you
think back, Clive - God bless him - had
already had spells at QPR, Arsenal,
Palace and back at QPR by that stage
even though he was only 20. So, for a
very young career, he had two or three
moves by then and it was a difficult
period in his life. He was quite an
emotional lad. But anything in and
around the box, Clive would put it in
the back of the net.
Let’s talk about you Terry. You were a
very versatile player who appeared at
right-back, centre-back and at
central midfield at Rangers. But in
every position, you really gave 100
per cent…
Well, I loved playing for Terry Venables.
He was my mentor and is still a good
friend. I played all over the place for
him. Up on the left-hand side, up on
the right-hand side, across the
HOOPS
defence and in midfield. If we were
struggling for a position, I was the boy
who’d raise my hand and step in there
to do a job. I remember when I initially
came to Rangers in 1980, my first
home game was against West Ham. I
slotted into centre midfield to look
after their playmaker Trevor Brooking
in a match that we won 3-0. I was
versatile because I wasn’t bad at doing
different jobs on the pitch. I could get
forward and I scored a few goals for
Rangers over the years. Then
defensively, I thought I read the game
well. I had a good voice at the back
and kept everyone together so that
we were very regimental. We were
tough to beat. One of the old football
coaches called Bobby Campbell used
to describe us as ‘The Mean Machine’
because we gave nothing away
defensively. Those were the days!
You made 19 appearances for
England as a QPR man. That was a
great honour for the R’s and for
yourself, wasn’t it?
It just shows where we were as
a club. After we were promoted to
Division One under Terry in 1983, we
usually finished as top London team.
We had the plastic pitch at Loftus
Road which other sides found hard to
play on. Yes, it was tough to perform
on that surface, but it taught you the
game. You had to stay on your feet,
you had to be good on the ball and
you had to be able to pass accurately.
It you over-hit a pass, it just never
stopped rolling. Therefore, you really
had to manipulate the ball continually
to get the end product that you
wanted. I think the Omniturf pitch
really sharpened a lot of our players
up. When you look at the track record
that we had, we had magnificent
results both at home and away
because of the improved technique
amongst our team. Wherever we
played - whether it was Liverpool,
Manchester United, Arsenal etc - we
were Queens Park Rangers and we
stood up to be counted.
interview with Terry in the next
QUALITY and perseverance shone through
as Queens Park Rangers secured this win at
Loftus Road.
On a cold and damp afternoon, hard-working
Norwich City set out their stall to defend
stoutly for long spells. But the R’s kept going
and eventually extended their goal tally to
nine in eight days at home without reply after
preceding victories over Blackburn Rovers
(2-0) and Portsmouth (5-0, League Cup).
John Gregory made the vital breakthrough on
72 minutes. Hoops midfield dynamo Gary
Waddock sent Clive Allen cavorting forward.
He slipped past Norwich defender Steve
Walford and crossed for the onrushing
Gregory to confidently lift the ball over
former QPR goalkeeper Chris Woods.
Then with 10 minutes to go, Rangers
substitute Steve Burke - who had only just
replaced Gary Micklewhite - caught visiting
defender Mark Nightingale daydreaming and
dispossessed him. Burke’s subsequent cross
evaded the Norwich rearguard and Woods to
allow Simon Stainrod a simple tap in.
QPR man of the match Bob Hazell also struck
the woodwork amidst a frantic goalmouth
scramble.
In his Sunday Express newspaper report,
Harold Swan summed up the match by writing:
“It may be an artificial pitch at Loftus Road, but
this talented Rangers side is for real.”
EDITORIAL SNIPPETS: R’s secretary/
programme editor Ron Phillips wrote:
“The Chimes of London? Pompey’s
fans went home thoroughly fed up
after seeing their team slaughtered
5-0 but they left behind a very pleasant
memory - their inspired singing of the
“Pompey Chimes” which practically
took over our stadium during moments
of drama in the play.
“This impressive chant is sung to “Big
Ben Chimes” (as near as makes no
difference) and it occurs to us that
such a chant would be much more
appropriate if sung by a London club -
and why not Rangers? The tune is a
very simple one and you can make up
words to it very easily. If you want a few
suggestions how about:
“I’LL tell YOU mate
RANgers ARE great
“RANgers WALK tall
WE’LL beat THEM all
“WE are THE best
WHERE are THE rest?
“WE are THE R’s
FOOTball’s TOP stars
“What do you think about it, Loft Boys
Choir? Over to you for a final decision
- but, if you go to Portsmouth, be a bit
tactful and stick to ‘Singing The Blues’!”
Elsewhere in the programme, Rangers
midfielder Gary Micklewhite was
interviewed and spoke about the new
plastic playing surface at Loftus Road.
“I don’t really mind the pitch,” he said.
“It has ups and downs, but it’s there
and you play on it. You have to get on
with it. The bounces of the ball can be
high, but the ball runs true and stays
true. People have started moaning
about it already, but there’s no snow
and ice yet when the pitch will be fully
playable.”
OUR CLUB AMBASSADOR’S
VIEWS ON ALL THINGS QPR…
G
OOD afternoon everyone and
welcome back to the Kiyan
Prince Foundation Stadium for
today’s game against Preston.
North End have proved to be tricky
opponents for us over recent seasons
and I’m expecting a very tough game
today when we’ll have to perform well to
gain the result we want. They’ve made
a steady start to the season and are
tucked in mid-table, unbeaten in seven,
although five of them have been draws.
Tuesday saw us get back to winning ways
with a good win against Birmingham.
Strangely we probably didn’t play as
well as we’ve done in previous games
where we came away empty-handed in
terms of points. That alone shows you
the fine lines and small margins involved
in winning and losing games at the top
level of sport. Matches can often be
decided on one or two key moments
throughout the 90 minutes, whether
that’s a refereeing decision, an individual
mistake, taking a chance, a fantastic save
or a moment of brilliance.
It was great to get a clean sheet and
I thought we defended really well
throughout. We didn’t offer Birmingham
many opportunities to hurt us which
gave us the platform to win. Being solid
defensively as a team is so important as
the way we play and the players we have
in our squad will score goals and create
chances. Hopefully we can build on that
win with another positive performance
and result this afternoon.
Today sees us as posthumously induct
two former players who are sadly no
longer with us into our Forever R’s club.
We’re delighted to welcome family
members of Keith Rutter and George
Petchey to the game as we celebrate the
time they both spent at the club they
served so well.
HOOPS
Keith was at QPR for nine years, making
more than 350 appearances, and was
regarded as an outstanding defender
by everyone in the game, showing great
consistency in his performances for the
club and throughout his career.
George played more than 250 games for
Rangers in a seven-year spell and was a
very highly rated half-back who I’m told
our fans loved for his tough tackling and
no-nonsense approach.
It’s fantastic that we can remember
and appreciate the roles both Keith
and George played in the club’s history.
Although they’re no longer with us, they’ll
never be forgotten.
Since launching Forever R’s five years
ago I’m very proud that we as a club
really appreciate and value all our former
players, managers and coaches who’ve
played their part in our history.
Of course, the huge success of Forever
R’s is underpinned by the fantastic
support all our former players and their
families who return to the club receive
from our fans. It’s brilliant to see and hear
and helps make us the club we are. There
are many people involved in what goes
on with the work Forever R’s does and
have helped it to be so successful. As a
former player myself I know how much
it means to be welcomed back to an old
club and QPR have made huge strides
with this in recent years. Long may
that continue.
Once again, your support for the team
has been incredible. Let’s get behind
the lads today and hopefully help us to
gain another valuable three points. Enjoy
the game.
FULHAM FC
GROUNDSHARE
WE shared Loftus Road with
Fulham Football Club from
2002 to 2004.
Fulham’s Craven Cottage
home was being rebuilt to
become a modern all-seater
arena at a cost of £70m. They
were replacing the antiquated
terracing and some banks of
wooden seating.
QPR were cash-strapped
at the time and newspaper
reports suggested that we
were paid £1m a season by
Fulham for this groundshare
arrangement.
Wasps Rugby Club had
previously been sharing at
Rangers but agreed to move
out of Loftus Road to make
way for Fulham. The rugby
team’s exit was sweetened by
a reported £300,000 pay-off
from QPR.
Speaking when the
groundshare was launched,
Fulham chairman Mohamed
Al Fayed was thrilled that he
was able to turn down an
alternative option which was
playing across London at West
Ham United’s Upton Park.
He said: “I’m delighted that
we’ve secured a temporary
home to remain within the
borough of Hammersmith and
Fulham. I’m also personally
very satisfied that we’re able
to offer to help QPR through
what is a very difficult time in
the club’s history.
“The survival of local football
teams steeped in tradition is of
paramount importance to me.
supporters and other parties
during the coming months to
ensure a smooth transition.
“Both Fulham and Queens
Park Rangers will be arranging
a series of forums to meet
members of the local
community to discuss the
new arrangements.”
QPR’s chief executive
at the time was David Davies.
He said: “We’re very pleased
to announce this deal, which
will bring much-needed
revenue into the company.
A lot of hard work has gone
into the groundshare and
it will make Rangers a more
attractive proposition to a
potential buyer.”
Fulham’s fans were housed
in the Loft End and in the
Ellerslie Road and South Africa
Road Stands. Away supporters
filled the School End in a
similar arrangement to QPR
home games.
Fixtures staged by Fulham at
our ground were:
2002/03: 28 - including a run
of memorable fixtures in the
Intertoto Cup and UEFA Cup.
2003/04: 21 (plus two preseason
games).
When Fulham left Loftus Road
and returned to the Cottage
in 2004, Al Fayed said: “I’m
delighted to fulfil the dearest
wish of our fans to take us
home. Craven Cottage has a
warm place in my heart. The
beautiful riverside setting
gives it a special atmosphere
and it is closely bound up with
the history of this great club.
“I know that the Cottage
means a lot to our fans,
many of whom aren’t keen
on Loftus Road. So I’ve been
working hard to find a solution
where we could go back.”
The Fulham Supporters’
Trust welcomed these
developments. Trust
spokesperson Tom Greatrex
said: “All Fulham fans are
happy at the news that we’re
returning to Craven Cottage
in time for the start of the
2004/05 season.”
TONY INCENZO’S RECALLS SOME WEIRD AND
WONDERFUL STORIES...
MY FIRST MATCH
I’LL whisper it quietly around these parts, but I
have to confess that the very first football match
I ever went to was at Stamford Bridge.
It was 50 years ago now. Way back on
Wednesday 18th August 1971 when Chelsea
lost 3-2 at home to Manchester United in the
top flight.
The reason I went to this fixture was that my
mum idolised United star George Best. So, at
6pm on the evening of the game, she decided
that we should both go along to watch, and we
jumped on the tube.
An hour later, we were outside Stamford Bridge
ahead of the 7.30pm kick-off. My mum thought
we’d easily be able to buy seat tickets. But
Chelsea only had two grandstands in those days,
and we hadn’t anticipated the huge crowd of
54,763 that was present!
So, we ended up paying to stand on the North
Terrace behind one goal. This was absolutely
packed, and we couldn’t see anything in the first
half due to the sheer volume of bodies in front
of us.
We managed to manoeuvre to a less crowded
spot at half-time and my mum put eight-yearold
me up on to her shoulders so that I could
view the action. Then as the teams emerged
for the second half, I remember counting the
players on both sides in my nerdy fashion. I said:
“Mum, I think Manchester United have only got
10 men!”
It transpired that Best had been sent off five
minutes before the break for swearing at the
referee. So, we went through that whole palaver
to watch George play, but we didn’t actually see
him kick a ball on the night!
HOOPS
RAPPER AND QPR FAN FRANKO FRAIZE
DISCUSSES FOLLOWING THE R’S…
IT’S been a decent start to the
season for the Hoops. What
are your hopes for the 2021/22
campaign?
I can’t lie, I’m hoping for promotion.
I’m not one to get over excited and
count my chickens but I’m sure
everyone would agree that there’s
a proper good feeling about the
place at the moment. The team
look like they’re there for each
other. The energy is class. There’s
optimism in the air and I’m fully
confident we’re going to keep
this momentum up. It’s nice to be
excited and optimistic watching us
play football.
You’ve been a QPR fan your
whole life. Who are the three best
players you’ve ever seen pull on
the shirt?
It’s hard to put it down to just
three, but here goes. I’ll say Les
Ferdinand first. One of my very
early memories of supporting the
club involves watching Les. He was
one of the first players I remember
pretending to be when I was a
kid running round in my Rangers
shirt. Second is Marc Bircham. His
love and loyalty to the club was
beautiful. A proper character, too.
Maybe not the most technical
but gave it 110 per cent every
time. There’s a lot to be learned
from that type of man. Last but
not least, Adel Taarabt. The fella
had some amazing skills. At times
he was utter class. It was magic
watching him at Loftus Road.
Frustrating at times but always mad
impressive.
Imagine you have the chance to
feature a QPR player, current or
past, on one of your tracks. Who
do you bring in for a verse?
Ha ha, easy one there. It’s got to be
Gareth Ainsworth. I’d love a duet
with him and his mob ‘The Cold
Blooded Hearts’. The passion he
had for Rangers was inspirational.
He’s also a proper lively frontman.
Ticks all the boxes.
HOOPS
The KPFS/Loftus Road has been
the scene of some legendary
moments over the years. What’s
your fondest memory of the
ground?
It’s got to be the promotion season
of 2010/11. I remember getting
out the car and wandering down to
Loftus Road. News got round about
us not having points deducted
and the mood was just crazy. This
fella came running out of Tesco
shouting the news and from then
on it was just like one big party. We
lost the game to Leeds and had
Danny Shittu playing up front. The
game finished and we all ran on
the pitch. It was beautiful. Then
Neil Warnock gave a speech to us
all. It was an unbelievable moment
as a QPR supporter. One I’ll never
forget!
Let’s talk music. What’s going
on with you as an artist at the
moment?
I’ve just released ‘How Can I Go
Wrong’ which is an upbeat indie
rap banger. It’s getting a lot of love
which I’m very grateful for. I’ve got
an EP to follow this winter. That’s a
bit more serious, a bit more of a lofi
rap project. Next year I’m looking
to get out and about and play some
live shows. That’s probably my
favourite part of all this. Interacting
with crowds and just having a good
ol’ sing song. Keep your eyes open
in case I’m about your ways in 2022.
|| MEMORY LANE||
AS A SPORTS JOURNALIST WITH THE EALING GAZETTE,
MIKE DONOVAN WAS A MAINSTAY OF THE LOFTUS ROAD
PRESS BOX IN THE 1970S AND 1980S. IN EACH MATCHDAY
PROGRAMME, HE LOOKS BACK ON THOSE UNFORGETTABLE
DAYS OF COVERING QUEENS PARK RANGERS…
TERRY Venables revealed
he was “flattered” that
QPR chairman Jim Gregory
described him as the best
manager in the country on
his return to Loftus Road as
boss in October 1980.
There was no question of
resting on any of the laurels the
indomitable Gregory was laying
down in his path when the
former Superhoops midfielder
swapped top-tier Crystal
Palace for the Division Two R’s.
Venables had already proved
a multi-tasker, having written
Hazell - a series of detective
novels - and co-creating a TV
series out of them during his
playing career at Loftus Road.
He also acted as the chairman
of the PFA in the 1970s and, as
a youngster, entered a singing
contest at Butlins holiday
camp in Clacton-on-Sea.
But many of his extracurricular
interests were put
on hold as he focused on the
job in hand.
He said to me on the day
before he officially took
charge: “I’ll be far too busy.
“When I was a player I had
plenty of spare time on
my hands. Now, with the
managing and coaching I just
haven’t got the time.”
But he added: “It’s true I’ve
got a lot to keep me occupied
outside football with business
involvement. I could lead a
quiet life but I don’t want one.
That’s why I’m so keen to stay
in football. It’s so insecure but
you learn to take the knocks.”
It had been a turbulent time
for QPR. Tommy Docherty had
been sacked 10 days before
HOOPS
Venables first sat behind the
manager’s desk at the ground
now known as the Kiyan Prince
Foundation Stadium.
In the interim, Derek Healy
had taken caretaker charge
with former Chelsea full-back
Ken Shellito, former boss at
Stamford Bridge, his assistant.
But it was all change with
Shellito out of a job and Healy’s
future up in the air as Venables
brought with him assistant
Allan Harris and scout Arnie
Warren from Palace.
Yet Venables reckoned
he soul-searched before
agreeing to switch from south
to west London.
He said: “It was a difficult
decision for me to accept
the Rangers job. But what
swayed me in the end was
that Rangers seemed to want
me more than Palace wanted
to keep me, even though it
meant dropping a division. But
my head is still in a spin with
what’s happened.
“I left Derek Healy to pick the
team for the Derby game
(taking place two days after
we spoke and one which
ended 3-3 at the Baseball
Ground). Rangers have got
three games in a week - two
away - so I’ll be able to assess
the situation.”
It was far from an auspicious
start for the new regime as
QPR suffered 1-0 losses
at Cardiff City and home
to Wrexham by the end of
Venables’ first week in charge.
But, after a goalless draw
at Grimsby Town, Venables’
side secured their first
victory under the new boss,
squeezing a 3-2 home win
against Luton Town. It was the
first of three on the trot. The
new era was up and running,
although today’s opponents
Preston North End, doomed
to relegation that season,
slowed down its progress by
limiting Rangers to one point
from their two fixtures against
each other.
Rangers full-back Ian Gillard
had faith in Venables from
the get-go. He said at the
time: “I think bringing in Terry
is a good move. He has a
well-respected reputation.
Everybody needs a change in
life and Terry needed his.
“Ken Shellito was in a difficult
position. Put under a lot of
pressure. I think all the players
will miss him but there’s
always something round the
corner for people in football.”
It was no false dawn. Rangers
had to settle for eighth
that term. But the following
campaign they reached the FA
Cup final for the first time in
their history before returning
to the top tier the season
after that.
HOOPS
Venables underlined how he’d
more than just got a handle
on this managerial lark during
his spell in charge in W12.
He built on guiding Palace
to promotion as champions
to the top flight in 1978/79,
having succeeded Malcolm
Allison in the Selhurst Park
hotseat for his first job in
1976. And, by September
1979, he was leading Palace
to the top of the league at
English football’s highest level
before securing a mid-table
finish, the highest in the club’s
history at the time.
But the rising star’s twinkle
had been dulled by a poor
start to the following season
and when Rangers came
looking to replace Docherty
the Eagles had landed… at the
bottom.
It was clear Gregory, from
what we already know,
thought the world of Venables
and that this bright, amiable
eastender repaid the
chairman’s faith in him in the
west end of town.
Venables went on to manage
Barcelona to the La Liga title
and, famously, England to
the semi-finals of Euro 96 to
prove Gregory might have had
a point 41 years ago, even if
El Tel could have done with a
few more trophy triumphs on
his CV as extra evidence of his
abilities! And those highlights
had their foundations in what
TV achieved with QPR.
Columnist
I
THE JOURNALIST AND BROADCASTER
PENS HIS LATEST COLUMN…
T’S very rare when I arrive in the press
box that the guys running the lounge
run out of programmes.
In fact, I think it’s the first time it’s happened in
more than five years. I usually read the column
before heading to my seat - especially if I’ve
given one of my guests a mention.
Instead, on this occasion I collared a very
obliging couple of QPR fans on the Victoria Line
on the way home.
Having noticed them flicking through the
programme after the Birmingham game, I sat
next to them on a busy carriage and politely
explained that I’d not had a chance to read my
piece as I was unable to get a copy at the ground.
Not only did the kind gentleman agree to me
taking a screenshot of the page, he actually
stretched the edges to make it easier to snap
the picture. What a guy! It reminded me of
the buzz I got as a child when I edited my QPR
fanzine ‘4:45 On Saturday’ for a year or two in
the 1990s.
My old friend Howard Prosser, former editor of
long-standing fanzine ‘In The Loft’, has returned
to games recently. He dug out this picture of me
from Easter Saturday 1993 when Les Ferdinand
netted the first of back-to-back hat-tricks
against Nottingham Forest, who were relegated
weeks later. That’s me selling on the wall on the
left as you walk down South Africa Road, dodgy
hairstyle and all.
The better feeling of satisfaction came en route
home when I’d see grown adults on the tube
reading my fanzine and on occasion laughing
out loud - hence the feeling of déjà vu when
I saw the couple reading the programme the
other night.
Let’s hope we don’t get the same feeling of déjà
vu this afternoon against Preston, who have won
on four of their last five visits to QPR.
