The Chief Executive
KHALED
EL-AHMAD
Good afternoon Reds,
Welcome back to Oakwell for
another Sky Bet Championship
matchday, our second at home this
week.
I understand that Wednesday night
wasn’t the result that we wanted
or envisaged against Nottingham
Forest, but I know the qualities that
this team possess. I am confident
that we can start earning positive
results – starting this afternoon
against Millwall.
A warm welcome to our visitors
from the Den, I hope you’ve had a
safe journey to South Yorkshire and
I’m looking forward to an exciting
encounter once the game gets
underway.
I know the history of this fixture
and that these have been special
occasions, particularly for Barnsley
supporters, over the past few years.
The 2016 play-off final will always
live long in the memory for you,
and it is an example of what can be
achieved when everyone is working
in tandem.
The Club had taken 21 points from
22 games, a run that included an
eight-match losing sequence, but
we rallied and finished sixth in the
table before earning promotion at
Wembley. Impossible is nothing.
By remaining positive in these
challenging situations, we will see
opportunities to progress and show
our true character, rather than
being prevented from reaching our
true potential by stumbling over
obstacles, instead.
Now is the time when everyone at
the Club needs to pull together and
show the Barnsley spirit that I have
heard so much about.
I had the pleasure of meeting
some supporters at the Garrison on
Tuesday evening and had a chance
to explain more about myself as
an individual, my values and my
ambitions for the Club moving
forward.
Having listened to you on the night
and discussed many eventualities, I
know that this is a town with good
people, who are passionate about
the Club that they love, and I want
to do everything I can to help make
the matchday experience as good
as we possibly can.
I end this message by placing my
thanks on record to Craig Sedgwick
and Kevin Pilkington, who will be
in the Reds dugout for the final
time this afternoon. They have
both served Barnsley Football Club
with distinction and extraordinary
professionalism during their time
here, and we all wish them every
success for the future.
Enjoy the game, Reds!
CRAIG
SEDGWICK
Barnsley Football Club has been a part
of my life since I first visited Oakwell as a
seven year old. From then on, I became
a Red. For that young boy to spend the
last 13 years working for his hometown
club, experiencing countless magical
moments shoulder to shoulder with
friends, it’s almost unthinkable.
Amongst a host of others, I’d like to thank
the Cryne family for initially believing
in me to fulfil the role of first team
physiotherapist. From play-off finals, to
end of season dramas, I class myself as
fortunate to have been a part of MY club’s
successful history. However, it is with
great sadness that I write this, as my time
at Oakwell has now come to an end… yet
I am comforted knowing that Barnsley FC
will always be in my heart and a part of
my heritage.
There are so many great people behind
the scenes that consistently go above
and beyond. These are ‘proper’ people
that would do anything to help anyone
out. If those individuals are reading this,
I have enjoyed my time with you and
have come to love you all. I am sorry I
can’t name you, but you know who you
are. From the bottom of my heart, I thank
you for being a part of my journey at
Barnsley, it wouldn’t have been the same
without you.
I leave the department in the hands of
Vikki Stevens. She is excellent at what she
does and will take things to the next level.
Vikki, thank you for being a rock to lean
on during tougher times and know that
regardless of where I am, I’ll always be
there to return the favour.
Thank you to all staff and players, past
and present, too. I have been so lucky
to get to know these people and their
families. As I’m sure you can imagine, I’ve
got so many stories from my time and I’ll
never forget a single one!
The current squad we have at Barnsley
are outstanding people and excellent
footballers. They all give so much to get
the three points, I wish fans could see how
much they truly care at times.
I would like to finish by saying that I wish
Barnsley Football club every success in
the future, and I am looking forward to
attending games as a fan with my own
family. Good luck this season.
I will miss Oakwell immensely.
COME ON YOU REDS!
Giving Football Back to
Small Business
At eBay, we know small business and
football clubs used to be like chips and
gravy, two peas in a pod – a match
made in community heaven.
Ironmongers, ship workers, spring
makers and cobblers, all formed clubs
which decades later are still prospering.
But nowadays, you’d think it was all
eyewatering transfers, Super Leagues
and mega sponsors, detached from the
humble origins of our historic clubs.
That’s why eBay are proud to support
300,000 small businesses who help
power EFL clubs nationwide. We’ll be
donating our advertising space to a lot
of these businesses – on match day
hoardings, around grounds and beyond –
throughout the coming season, to ensure
they can continue to thrive in our local
communities. So, join us in giving your
support to Small Business Power, because
today, they need us more than ever.
IN PARTNERSHIP WITH
The Big Interview
BEN
WILLIAMS
ne year and one day ago, Ben
Williams was lying on an operating
table having surgery on his ruptured
anterior cruciate ligament in his left
knee.
He admits that those weeks and months were
the darkest of his life as he struggled to cope with
the devastation of being ruled out for an entire
campaign and realising how difficult the road
ahead would be.
It has been quite the journey for Benj, as we here
at Grove Street affectionately call him. From
learning how to walk again to running on the
grass once more, and finally getting back into
action, we’ve been with him every step of the
way.
That, of course, is only the physical aspect of
his recovery – the mental challenge that our
tenacious young full-back undertook was
something he never thought he’d have to
experience, but he came through it in typical Ben
fashion: battling and committed.
12
And to see him back doing what he loves after
missing a whole season, knowing how hard
he has worked and what he had overcome, is
enough to put a smile on anyone’s face.
The big moment came in our first pre-season
outing at Rochdale on 14 July as Ben was
introduced at half-time, getting his first minutes
in more than a year and looking like he’d never
been away.
“It was big in terms of just getting it out of the
way,” he reflected. “I was looking forward to it –
don’t get me wrong – but it’s something where
you want to come out unscathed, really.
“But once I was out there, any doubts that I had
in my head had gone out of the window and it
was just good to go out there and express myself
on the pitch because I hadn’t done it in such a
long time, and it was just a great feeling.”
Appearances against Sheffield Wednesday,
Morecambe and Manchester City – up against
Riyad Mahrez, of all players – would follow as he
continued to build his match fitness ahead of our
Sky Bet Championship opener at Cardiff City.
Some might have thought he was a surprise
inclusion in Markus Schopp’s first starting 11 of
the new term, but those on the inside who had
seen his performances during training sessions
and in friendlies didn’t bat an eyelid.
GROVE STREET | BARNSLEY FC OFFICIAL PROGRAMME
“In pre-season, you get a bit of a feel for how
you’re going to start the season,” discussed Ben,
running a hand through his hair. “I think I’d been
in and out in a few of the games, but I’d worked
hard in the off-season to get myself up to full
fitness and I think I earnt my way into the team.
“I thought I gave a good account of myself and I
thought, as a team, we started the season well.
“Obviously, it doesn’t get much tougher than that
ISSUE SIX | BARNSLEY VS MILLWALL
13
in terms of opening day games – Cardiff are a
massive team with a massive budget, and it was
one of the first games back with fans and I think
that played a massive part in it, having the away
support there, which is always great – especially
for the players.
“For me, personally, it was massive; it was
obviously another mental target that I ticked off.
The hard work that I put in to get back was crazy,
really, it’s probably one of the toughest years of
ISSUE SIX | BARNSLEY VS MILLWALL
my life in terms of overcoming such a negative
hurdle.
“But I’ve come back now and I feel mentally
stronger, physically stronger and I’m in a good
place, now. For me, I just want to play and help
the team as much as I can and, hopefully, get a
run of games in the team.”
Perhaps the most important thing for the
22-year-old, though, was ensuring that he came
GROVE STREET | BARNSLEY FC OFFICIAL PROGRAMME
14
back with enough confidence to approach every
tackle in the same full-blooded nature that he
always has done.
It can be easy to shy out of challenges for fear of
potentially causing further damage to yourself,
but that thought has never once crossed Ben’s
mind and he remains as aggressive as ever when
winning the ball back.
That all boils down to his character; the
determination for self-improvement and striving
to be the best that he can be.
GROVE STREET | BARNSLEY FC OFFICIAL PROGRAMME
“I had many discussions with Sedgy and the
physio team about how I wanted to come back
and I don’t think I ever doubted that I would
come back just as strong, but I had a target in
my head to come back even stronger,” continued
Benj.
“The amount of gym work I’d done just to give
myself the best chance of coming back in a
great shape. As desperate as I was to come back
last season, there was no real pressure because
we were doing so well and getting results and
getting to the play-offs that it allowed me to just
ISSUE SIX | BARNSLEY VS MILLWALL
Thankfully, the severity of the tackle was minimal
and Benj was back in training a week later, but
he believes it is all just part and parcel of the
game.
“It was obviously a bit of déjà vu, to be honest,”
he recalled. “It was a really strong challenge
– I’ve given out a few of them in my time, so I
understand. I’ve watched it back quite a few
times and I don’t think there was any malice in it,
to be honest.
“But it was obviously frustrating for me because,
to be back in the team, I wanted to get a run of
games and help the team as much as possible
and to come off early in a game like that was
frustrating, especially after being out all last
season.
“There was a little bit of nerves and worry just
waiting around for the results but, luckily, I was
fortunate to come out with little more than a bit
of bone bruising. I’m always trying to be back as
soon as possible, so as soon as I found out it was
nothing serious, I was itching to get back out on
the pitch.”
We asked Ben what went through his head in
the immediate aftermath of that tackle as he
hobbled gingerly down the tunnel at the Vitality
Stadium to be assessed by our medical team.
15
Did he fear the worst, after everything that he
had already been through in the last 12 months,
or was he just hoping for the best?
“There was that worry,” he admitted. “There
was a bit of talk with the physios that, as a
precaution, they wanted to get me in a boot
straight away. When you’ve got a boot on there’s
always that doubt in your head that it could be
something serious and you could be out for a
while here.
focus on my recovery and get myself back up to
speed so I could hit the ground running as soon
as I was declared fit.”
A few weeks ago, there was an almighty scare
during our game at Bournemouth when Philip
Billing lunged in above the ball and took Ben out
at shin height.
It was a heart-in-mouth moment as our left-back
writhed in agony with fears that he could have
potentially suffered a broken leg, such was the
force of the challenge.
ISSUE SIX | BARNSLEY VS MILLWALL
“I was speaking to a few of the boys and they
were telling me not to worry about it until I got
my results, but it’s easier said than done. But I’m
just fortunate that it was something of nothing.
“It would have been tough, had it been another
serious injury. You can always say that you’ve
dealt with worse, but any footballer doesn’t want
to be in the physio room. We work hard each day
and we’re just fortunate that we can call this our
job, really.
“But it’s something I would have overcome again.
I had targets for this season to be a big one in
terms of getting a run of games and having
GROVE STREET | BARNSLEY FC OFFICIAL PROGRAMME
as much impact on the team as possible – just
making up for lost time.
“So, I’m lucky it wasn’t anything serious.”
You will have noticed Ben and his fellow wingbacks
pushing further forward during the game
as they aim to stretch the pitch and make the
game as expansive as possible.
The idea is to have more bodies in the attacking
third in order to create more goal scoring
opportunities, with our wide players providing
another outlet and generatng overloads in
certain areas.
It is a role that the full-back relishes playing and
he has shown in his four appearances so far this
term that he can be a decent outlet when going
forward with his dangerous crosses into the box.
16
“I’ve been working on it a lot,” revealed Ben. “A lot
of the sessions during training in the week involve
wing-backs being quite high and, if you don’t get
in those areas, you can’t get the crosses or score
the goals that the gaffer wants us to do.
“He wants us to be involved in the build-up
and final third action as much as possible and,
for me, it’s just good to find myself in those
positions more than I have in recent years. So,
I’m sure I can pop up with a few assists, given the
opportunity.
“I love that position; I played it quite a few times
when I was younger and I’ve always been the
type of player that enjoys going forward as
well as doing the basics right and getting my
defensive duties done correctly.
“The gaffer speaks regularly to wing-backs and
lets them know where he wants them and what
his plan is for them during the game. We all know
where we should be in certain areas of the pitch
and, for me, I enjoy playing that position and
want to cement it.”
Ben is now just 10 appearances shy of reaching
the half century mark in all competitions for
Barnsley, not a bad return considering he was
sidelined for the 20/21 campaign.
He will be hoping to reach that milestone this
season, although his main focus is on turning our
fortunes around on the pitch rather than personal
accolades.
“I had been told off a few people that I’m getting
close to that,” he said. “Obviously, it’d be nice to
GROVE STREET | BARNSLEY FC OFFICIAL PROGRAMME
get past that sooner rather than later, but for me
I think it’s just about focussing on the task on the
pitch and getting results rather than focussing on
individual milestones because that’s just a bonus.
“To get a run of games in the team is the aim for
any player and, for me, it’s just about staying fit
and giving myself the best chance to do that.
Obviously, you’ve got to perform on the pitch to
be able to keep that place in the team.
“I feel confident that, given the opportunity, I
can do that. It’s just a case of being patient and,
ISSUE SIX | BARNSLEY VS MILLWALL
17
when the opportunity comes, I’ve got to grab it
with both hands.”
Like any professional footballer, Ben harbours
ambitions of playing on the international stage
and, having featured for Wales at youth level
– including winning the Victory Shield in 2014
– and been part of senior squads for European
Championship qualifiers in 2019, he is keen to get
back in the fold.
The talent is there, it is a matter of consistency
and regular action for the 22-year-old, but he can
ISSUE SIX | BARNSLEY VS MILLWALL
use his teammate, Michał Helik, as inspiration of
what can be achieved when you play frequently
in the Championship.
“Being out injured last season means that I’ve got
a lot of work to catch up on, but my main priority
is cementing a spot in Barnsley’s team and to put
on some good performances,” insisted Ben.
“If the international call-up comes with it, brilliant,
but, if not, then I’m just happy to help Barnsley as
much as possible.
GROVE STREET | BARNSLEY FC OFFICIAL PROGRAMME
18
“Obviously, Mich had an incredible season and
fully deserved his call-up. It was great to see him
in the squad at the Euros and I think every player
stives to do that for their country but, like I said,
the international call-up will come with good club
performances and that’s what I’ve got to do to
earn that.
“So, that’s my main aim, at the moment.”
Unfortunately, results haven’t been going our way
in recent weeks, with Wednesday evening’s defeat
at home to Nottingham Forest another bitter pill to
swallow as the Reds dropped to 21st in the table.
It’s not for lack of trying – quite the contrary –
and Ben is hopeful that this disappointing run
of form will end soon, starting with the visit of
Millwall.
“We’re going through a bit of a rough patch, at
the minute,” he conceded. “It’s obviously tough to
take as players and staff, as well. We seem to be
working on stuff on the training ground and it’s
just not falling into place for us on the pitch at the
moment, but to be fair, everyone is buying into it.
“The morale in the dressing room is still high – if
you look back to where we were at this point
ISSUE SIX | BARNSLEY VS MILLWALL
There is slight reason to be optimistic heading
into this clash with Millwall – we are unbeaten
in our last four meetings with the Lions, with
two wins and two draws in our previous
encounters.
Perhaps the most memorable of those fixtures
was back in December 2019 as Patrick Schmidt
nodded home a dramatic late winner at the
Den to secure three massive points.
However, Ben feels that you can’t dwell
on those moments, and it’s all about
concentrating on the next task at hand and
getting a positive result heading into the
international break.
“I don’t think you can talk too much about
past results because it’s a new team and
they’ll have new players who have come in
that won’t be as aware of previous results,”
asserted Benj. “I don’t think we take much
notice of results we’ve had against opposition
in the past.
“I think it’s just a case of sticking to the game
plan. As long as we stick to the game plan
we’ll give ourselves the best chance of coming
away with the points.
19
“They’re obviously a tough team to play, but
we’re confident that, being at home with the
fans behind us that we can put on a good
show and come away with the points.
“If you look at it, the table is pretty tight, so if
you win one game, you climb probably seven
or eight places, so I don’t think we should
be too worried at the moment. But we’re
confident in games that we have played that
we probably could have won them, it’s just a
case of taking your chances, being clinical and
keeping it tight at the back.
last season, I still feel that we’ve got the ability to
climb back up and reach the heights that we did
last season.
“That’s the motivation that we’ve got to use now,
going into this game.
“The lads are pretty confident that we are going
to turn the results around and work our way back
up the league, and we have to because we’ve
got the quality in the team to do just that. So, it’s
just a case of sticking to the game plan, everyone
working hard for each other and I’m sure the
results will pay off soon.”
ISSUE SIX | BARNSLEY VS MILLWALL
“We can’t sit around and mope about it;
we’ve got to get our heads right and focus
on Saturday. It’s the next opportunity to put it
right and get three points.
“I think everyone is frustrated and we
understand the fans are frustrated because
they have to watch this, but at the moment it’s
just not clicking for us on the pitch. We’re eager
to put it right and put it right quickly because
we’re just slipping further down the table.
“But we need to stick together as a group
because we’ve been in this situation before
and know how to get out of it.”
t hasn’t been the ideal start to the 21/22
Sky Bet Championship season for the
Lions, who have become something
of a draw specialist so far. With just
the one victory to their name at the time this
publication went to print, Gary Rowett’s side
will be looking to find that winning formula
sooner rather than later.
The London club had a fairly quiet summer in
terms of transfer activity. The standout piece
of business no doubt being the re-signing of
midfielder George Saville. After three years
away (with Middlesbrough), the Northern Ireland
international came back to The Den in July.
Former Arsenal striker Benik Afobe joined the
Lions on loan from Stoke City, whilst Liverpool
midfielder Sheyi Ojo arrived on deadline day in
another loan deal.
Familiar faces to Reds fans, Bartosz Białkowski
(loan spell in 2009), Tom Bradshaw (2016-2019)
and Connor Mahoney (loan spell in 2018) all
remain at Millwall whilst the giant aerial threat
that is Matt Smith continues to lead the line for
the Lions.
Whilst four of their last five fixtures were draws,
it’s a run that sees Millwall unbeaten since defeat
The Lions Manager
GARY ROWETT
25
ow approaching his two-year
anniversary in charge of the Lions,
Gary Rowett is currently trying to
arrest his first poor run of form. With
Millwall ending the previous campaign with
four defeats from their final six matches,
they’ve also struggled for success in this
opening stage of 21/22, with just the one
victory to their name heading into this
afternoon’s clash here at Oakwell.
The 47-year-old from Bromsgrove had a solid
playing career as a no-nonsense defender,
spending most of his time in the top two
divisions of English football with the likes of
Birmingham City, Derby County and Leicester
City.
His coaching career began in 2012 when
appointed Burton Albion boss and he would
lead the Brewers to back-to-back League Two
play-off campaigns, both unsuccessful, having
been edged out by Bradford City in the 2013
semi-final before reaching the final a year later,
only to lose out to Fleetwood Town at Wembley.
In October of 2017 he took up a job offer from
ISSUE SIX | BARNSLEY VS MILLWALL
former club Birmingham, and transformed their
fortunes in the Championship in spectacular
style, guiding them to a 10th place finish having
taken charge of a Blues side in the relegation
zone upon appointment.
Despite leading Blues to 7th in the table by
December of 2016, he was bizarrely sacked
by the club’s new ownership group and had
done enough to earn the top job at another
former club in Derby, where he led the Rams to
the play-offs back in 2018, only to lose out to
Fulham over two legs in the semi-finals.
An eight month spell at Stoke City was next,
where despite spending plenty of money to try
and get the newly-relegated Premier League
outfit instantly back amongst the big boys, he
was dismissed in January of 2019 after a poor
run of results.
This is his third season in charge at The Den
and he has so far led the Lions to an 8th and
11th place finish at this level, with much to do to
improve the club’s fortunes after a start to the
season that sees them down in the bottom third
alongside the Reds.
Football historian LEIGH EDWARDS profiles ten leading Millwall managers
26
RON GRAY
Ron Gray managed Millwall to the Fourth Division
title in 1961-62. A former wing-half with Sheffield
United and Watford, he was manager of the
Hornets during the 1950-51 season. He became
Millwall's trainer and replaced Charlie Hewitt
as the Lions' manager from January 1956 until
January 1958. Returning to The Den as boss in
January 1961, he surprised fans by selling leading
scorer Peter Burridge to Crystal Palace and was
sacked in November 1963. He spent four years
as Lincoln City's manager, then became Ipswich
Town's chief scout in September 1970 and resided
in Ipswich until his death in October 2002.
BILLY GRAY
Former England B international winger Billy Gray
guided Millwall to promotion in two consecutive
seasons. Initially with Leyton Orient, he moved
to Chelsea in March 1949 and appeared in two
losing FA Cup semi-finals. He joined Burnley in
August 1953, then Nottingham Forest in June
1957, featuring in their 1959 FA Cup final triumph.
Appointed Millwall's player-boss in November
1963, he also plotted their 1964-65 FA Cup run.
He remained in charge at The Den until resigning
in May 1966, then managed Notts County and
coached Fulham. Later returning to Nottingham
Forest as groundsman, he died in April 2014.
BENNY FENTON
Benny Fenton was unlucky not to manage Millwall
to the top-flight in 1971-72. A former wing-half,
he played alongside his elder brother Ted at
West Ham before moving to Millwall in March
1939. He netted seven goals in 20 League games
prior to joining Charlton Athletic in January 1947,
then became Colchester United's player-boss in
February 1955. Plotting their 1961-62 promotion
success, he took charge of Leyton Orient in
October 1963 and was appointed Millwall's
manager in May 1966. He guided them to the FA
Cup fifth round in 1972-73 but resigned in October
1974 and became Charlton's secretary. He died in
July 2000.
GORDON JAGO
Gordon Jago plotted Millwall's 1975-76 promotion
success. Signing professional for Charlton Athletic
in May 1951, the England Youth centre-half became
Eastbourne United's player-boss in July 1962, then
coached Fulham. He managed Baltimore Bays
before taking charge of QPR in January 1971,
guiding them back to the top-flight in 1972-73.
Appointed Millwall's manager in October 1974,
he remained at The Den until December 1977. He
returned to the United States and led Tampa Bay
Rowdies to two consecutive NASL Soccer Bowl
triumphs, briefly rejoining QPR before coaching
Dallas Sidekicks and California Surf.
GEORGE GRAHAM
George Graham plotted Millwall's 1984-
85 promotion success. A former Scotland
international, he moved from Aston Villa to
Chelsea in July 1964 and joined Arsenal in
September 1966, starring as they won the Fairs
Cup in 1970 and the 'double' in 1970-71. After
spells with Manchester United, Portsmouth and
Crystal Palace, he coached QPR before becoming
Millwall's boss in December 1982. He guided
the Lions to the FA Cup sixth round in 1984-85,
returning to Arsenal as manager in May 1986.
Leading the Gunners to all three major domestic
honours and the ECWC in 1994, he then managed
Leeds United and Spurs.
JOHN DOCHERTY
John Docherty managed Millwall to the Second
Division title in 1987-88. Initially with St Roch's, the
winger had three spells at Brentford, also playing
for Sheffield United and Reading, helping the
Bees win promotion in 1971-72. He coached QPR
prior to rejoining Brentford again as manager in
January 1975, becoming Cambridge United's boss
in January 1978. Plotting promotion that season,
he was Brentford's assistant-boss before taking
charge of Millwall in July 1986. He led them to
tenth in the top-flight in 1988-89 and remained
at The Den until February 1990, then managed
Bradford City and briefly Millwall again.
MARK McGHEE
Former Scotland international striker Mark
McGhee guided Millwall to the Second Division
title in 2000-01. Starting with Bristol City, he
played for Morton and Newcastle before moving
to Aberdeen in March 1979 and starred as they
won the Scottish League and ECWC. He joined
Hamburg in May 1984, then won further honours
with Celtic and rejoined Newcastle in July 1989.
Later Reading's player-boss, he also managed
Leicester and Wolves, taking charge of Millwall in
September 2000. He led them to the First Division
play-offs in 2001-02, then managed Brighton,
Motherwell (twice), Bristol Rovers and Barnet.
NEIL HARRIS
marksman in Millwall's 2000-01 Second Division
title triumph. He also appeared in the 2004 FA Cup
final and moved to Nottingham Forest in December
2004. Rejoining Millwall in January 2007, he starred
RESTART A HEART
Footballer’s cardiac arrest highlights
importance of life-saving CPR and
defibrillation
Barnsley Football Club has teamed
up with Yorkshire Ambulance Service
(YAS) to promote the importance of CPR
following Christian Eriksen’s cardiac arrest
during the Euro 2020 tournament.
Swift action was crucial to Eriksen’s survival
when the 29-year-old midfielder collapsed
during Denmark’s opening game against
Finland on 12 June. He was brought back to life
with a combination of CPR - cardiopulmonary
resuscitation that involves chest compressions -
and an electric shock from a defibrillator.
Reds’ fans will be given the opportunity to learn
CPR from ambulance staff at today’s match.
Watch out for the CPR Anywhere video on the big
screens and check out the players and Toby Tyke in
their Restart a Heart campaign t-shirts!
Jason Carlyon, Community Engagement Manager
with YAS, said: “The quick reaction of witnesses
undoubtedly saved Christian Eriksen’s life, as was
the case with Fabrice Muamba, Glen Hoddle and
David Ginola who are also cardiac arrest survivors.
“But not everyone is as fortunate. In the UK,
only 10% of people who suffer a cardiac
arrest outside hospital survive, partly
because they don’t receive early CPR
and defibrillation.
“With only one in three people in England
performing CPR when they witness a
cardiac arrest, it’s important that we give
people the confidence and skills to save someone’s
life in this medical emergency.
“More patients will survive if more people know
what to do before an ambulance arrives, so we are
delighted that Barnsley Football Club is supporting
our campaign and helping us to create more lifesavers.”
Ambulance staff and volunteers will visit 109
Yorkshire’s secondary schools to teach CPR to
30,000 students on Restart a Heart Day (Friday 15
October 2021). Find out more, including CPR tutorial
videos, at restartaheart.yas.nhs.uk
ome might call it a modern injustice,
others see the unsung hero as a
typically good old British way
of knuckling down for the cause
without fanfare; something which seems to
be of huge value to our little island.
Many have been posthumously recognised
for their contributions, albeit too late in some
people’s eyes.
Alan Turing, the man credited with breaking
the enigma code in WWII and ultimately
turning the tide in the favour of the allies. Never
recognised when he was alive due to the
classified nature of his work, disgraced due to
archaic laws, the Queen officially recognised
him in 2013, some 61 years after he died.
Peter Taylor, Brian Clough’s not-so famous
assistant who is generally considered to be
the man that looked after the football while
Cloughie did the man management. With
league championships, league cups and
European cups on his CV, he will always be
recognised as a number 2.
Murdoch from the A-Team, Howling Mad as
he was known, they had to break him out of
the veteran’s hospital every time someone
found them when no one else could help.
We all wanted to be BA, we wanted to drive
Face Man’s Corvette and make a plan like
Hannibal, but without a spiked glass of milk
and Murdoch’s skills as a pilot, they’d have not
got anywhere fast.
And so that brings me to……….
GEORGE WILLIAMS
UNSUNG
Us Reds fans aren’t fresh faced when it comes
to strange goings-on down at Oakwell. We
have a dog as a mascot that once received
HEROES
Neil Richardson
a touchline ban for obscene gestures, whose
girlfriend looked like something off an episode
of Only Fools and Horses for goodness sake.
But the 2015/16 season was something to
behold. The season before this held so much
in the way of hopes of a rebuild, a fresh start,
Danny Wilson back at the helm, we felt like it
was going to be the beginning of something
great again. Which it was, but we just had to
wait 18 months to get there.
The first three months of that season, well,
to say we couldn’t get going would be an
understatement. The manager didn’t seem
to be able to settle on a formation, or know
which his best team was. We played loanees
that simply didn’t fit the bill and it saw us rock
bottom of League One by November. Then
something happened…we re-signed Adam
Hammill and something just clicked. With the
rest of the squad.
An unlikely candidate emerged in the form of
George Williams; a young lad who we had
signed from Worcester City where he was
playing part-time whilst studying for a degree
at university. Somewhere, the spreadsheet that
we didn’t know much about at this time was
springing into action. By Christmas, we were
climbing the table and George had cemented
his place in a team that virtually picked itself,
week in, week out. The rest as they say is
history. Two victorious trips to Wembley, the
first cup in living memory, promotion, our stock
value rocketing and the small issue of a few
players’ contracts being up for renewal. Sadly
for the fans, the business side of George’s
game couldn’t reach an agreement and he
signed for MK Dons. We don’t know those
shenanigans, it’s best left to the backroom
staff, but George, the quiet lad we signed
from non-league, had already done plenty to
warrant the deserved title of an unsung hero.
Pivotal, yet unassuming.
Academy Interview
JOSIAH DYER
45
he name Dyer holds cult status
amongst Barnsley supporters, with
iconic striker, Bruce, spending five
seasons at Oakwell in the late 90s
and early 00s.
He plundered 70 goals for the Reds in all
competitions following his move from Crystal
Palace and struck up a formidable partnership
with Neil Shipperley, amongst others, endearing
himself to the home faithful.
Now his son, Josiah, is making waves in our
academy set-up, and Grove Street sat down
with the youngster to get his verdict on how he
feels his side are doing so far this campaign.
46
Like his father, the recently turned 17-yearold
is a striker with a keen eye for goal, and
he is eager to earn his own reputation as a
prolific forward rather than being known for his
heritage.
“I wouldn’t say pressure is the word, I’d say it
spurs me on and motivates me to go on and
keep playing and scoring, because everyone
says to me when I see them in the street ‘are
you scoring goals like your dad?’ and that’s
what I want to do – I want to go on and score
more than him!” asserted Josiah.
“As a striker, all you want to do is score goals,
no matter how well you play – you want to play
well, but goal scoring is the focus, and my dad
loved scoring goals as well. So, when I go home
and tell him, he’s buzzing for me.
“That’s the motivating factor.
“When I watch him and how well he did at
Barnsley, I think ‘how can I replicate that and
score even more?’”
Of course, after deciding to pursue a career in
the beautiful game, there was always likely to
be plenty of additional coaching at home for
Josiah as he honed his skills at a young age.
And while there may be some similarities
between his own style of play and his father’s,
GROVE STREET | BARNSLEY FC OFFICIAL PROGRAMME
ISSUE SIX | BARNSLEY VS MILLWALL
there are attributes that set them apart and
perhaps unique qualities that our promising
striker possesses.
“My dad will say as well that I don’t really play
like him – I’m a bit different; a bit more diverse in
terms of being stronger, more physical and taller
and I’ve got a decent range of goals, as well,”
continued Josiah.
“He always said he didn’t have a left foot and
I’ve got a better left foot than him! So, I feel like I
can comfortably use that a bit more.
“It’s definitely about creating my own legacy
and doing as much as I can to make the best for
myself.
“He’s had a massive influence. He never
pressured me to play football or to play a
certain position, it just happened to be God’s will
that I was a striker.
“I’m a striker and I enjoy scoring goals, and
that’s a benefit to me. Ever since then, when I
found that set position, he’s been giving me tips
from movement, how to use my body, the way
I approach the ball, the technique of striking a
ball – all those things, he’s helped me with.
“Now I’m in the older age group, whenever he
watches me it’s constructive criticism all the
time. Even if I do well, he’s buzzing for me, but
it’s about how I can improve because he’s been
there and done it, so it’s a real benefit for me.”
As well as the strong relationship at home,
Josiah is close with our Academy Manager,
Bobby Hassell, who arrived at Oakwell as a
player shortly after Bruce departed for Watford.
Sir Bob, as he is affectionately known by Reds,
is always on hand to offer advice and coaching
tips to our fledgling stars, and his guidance
has certainly helped aid your youngster’s
development.
“He’s helped it massively,” praised the 17-yearold.
“One thing with Bobby is, he’s always
going to be honest with you – he’s like that with
everyone. I feel like that honesty and man-toman
conversation that you can have with him
about football is something that’s benefitted me
massively because he always tells me how he
feels I’ve done after and before.
“He’ll tell me specifically what he wants to see
and, if I’ve done it, you know straight away. He’s
got good constructive criticism and, like I say,
that’s all you can want as a player because you
know if you’ve done well or not.
“It’s about how you can build on it in the next
game and how you can improve, and Bobby
will always tell you.”
The young striker has certainly been improving
over the last couple of seasons as he’s worked
his way through the age groups, making his
U18s debut last term while still representing our
U16s side.
He bagged his first goal for Tom Harban’s team
in a 4-3 victory over Birmingham City back in
February – coming from the bench to net that
all-important late winner.
“Stepping up was hard, but it was a challenge
that I relished and embraced because the
physical side is what I enjoy,” he reflected.
“Because of my size and strength, it’s always
a battle with the centre-back and, at that age,
there’s a lot more physical stuff, so that’s a plus
and also it’s a bit quicker.
“The players are smarter, so you could make a
movement and trust that the midfielder is going
to find you because you’ve made that run.
Whereas at lower level, they might take a few
extra touches and the chance could be gone.
“But for me, as a striker – especially how we
played last season with it being more direct – it
was always physical, and my goal came from a
header from a cross out wide.
“Even at the end of that Birmingham game,
Kieren unfortunately got injured and we had Nej
in net, and the spirit and character of the boys
just to go for the win – it was probably the first
47
ISSUE SIX | BARNSLEY VS MILLWALL
GROVE STREET | BARNSLEY FC OFFICIAL PROGRAMME
48
time that I felt like I understood what we were
playing for because it’s a league.
“At under 16s, you don’t play in a league or for
points, but you could tell what we were playing
for, and I remember coming off, blowing, and I’d
only played 20 or 25 minutes.”
Josiah is also off the mark for this season,
too, having struck in the U18 Professional
Development League Cup against Wigan
Athletic last weekend.
He was picked out by Fabio Jalo following a
short corner routine before heading in from close
range to give the young Reds a deserved 72nd
minute lead.
“Personally, it was amazing,” he beamed. “To
play against a team like Wigan and score my
first goal, it feels like getting something off my
shoulders. As a striker, that’s what you want to
do.
“When I’m coming on the pitch, I’m being told to
stay in between the sticks and wait for balls to
come in, and that’s how the goal came.
“It’s a dream for me to keep feeding off those
crosses and, fortunately, I could do that.
“I think, for the team, that was a massive boost
because the coach said before the game that
we never come here and win. We should have
won the season before, but didn’t, so it’s about
those fine little moments – that clinical edge.
“We had that clinical edge; we scored and we
were clinical at the back and defended our box
really well. As a team, we pressed all over them
and we were just committed. That’s what you’ve
got to be when you go out there.
“It’s hard, they’re physical and they like to talk
and get in your head, but we did well as a team
and it gives us motivation to play against those
top teams in our league. Even though it was
a cup match, it’ll be exactly the same in the
league – if not harder – and we’ve got to match
it.”
GROVE STREET | BARNSLEY FC OFFICIAL PROGRAMME
Our U18s have hit a rich vein of form, winning
their last four games in all competitions (please
note, this was printed prior to their fixture against
Sheffield United on 1 October) after getting off to a
shaky start.
The goals are flying in at the moment with 16
bagged in just five league games, which makes it
a dream if you’re a centre forward.
“The way that we play is quite wide and expansive
football – we switch the play and get it out to the
wing-backs; they like to get goals, assists and balls
into the box,” said Josiah.
“When I come on, I’m being told to stay in between
the sticks and it’s a dream for a striker to be
feeding off balls or rebounds all the time.”
As he just mentioned, crucial to the side’s attacking
prowess are our flying wing-backs, Ben Hall and
Hayden Pickard, who have been contributing
goals and assists like they’re going out of fashion.
The dynamic duo constantly provide that much
needed width to open the pitch up and haven’t
been shy when getting within shooting range,
and Josiah is delighted with the number of
opportunities they both create.
“Hayden with his left foot is a bit unpredictable –
he likes to cut inside sometimes and shoot but will
also go down the line and cross it,” he discussed.
“With Ben, he bombs it forward all the time and,
when he gets the ball, it goes in the box straight
away and I know what I’m going to get.
“You can tell that Hayden has played at under 18s
level before; he integrates in training with the older
ones and it’s a bit more natural for him. You can
see it on the pitch with him, too – it’s easy for him;
he knows the system, knows the style of play and
knows the coach, so it’s good for him.”
There is a real belief amongst this crop of players
that they can go one better this campaign and
make a strong push for the end of season playoffs
by finishing in the top two.
That victory over Wigan has given the young
ISSUE SIX | BARNSLEY VS MILLWALL
Reds even more confidence, which can only be
positive with so much football to be played over
the coming months.
“I feel like the togetherness we’ve got on that
pitch is second to none, so no matter what
challenge we come up against, we’re going
to be ready because we played against a
different set of teams – mixed bag, in terms of
ability – travelling has been tough and different
experiences, but we’ve come out on top in these
last four games,” insisted Josiah.
“We’ve played Watford, who I’ve never played
against before, but we approached that game
really well – aggressively with the same intent
that we do in every game. We did the same
thing against Wigan and kept a clean sheet.
“In my opinion, we can come out on top against
any team that we play against.”
49
Like any good striker, Josiah is hoping that he
can make his own impression on games as the
season goes on, although he hasn’t set himself
any goals in particular in terms of how many he
wants to score this term.
He just wants to enjoy his football and take
the chances when they come along, while
continuing to learn day by day in a positive,
thriving environment.
“I’ve not set myself specific targets because,
coming into your first year as a scholar, you
don’t know what to expect in terms of the
pressure, training every day, the games
programme – it’s a lot different to before,” he
affirmed.
“So, I didn’t set specific targets because I don’t
know how many games I’m going to play, but
one thing I do set for myself every game is to go
out there and make an impact.
“Impact is the biggest thing, whether it’s winning
a flick on to go and score, whether it be making
a run to create space for a teammate, whether
it be scoring a goal – that’s what I want to do
every time I step on the pitch: make an impact.”
they welcome fallen giants Notts County to the
Shay in the National League. The Shaymen are in
decent form and currently sit fifth in the table, with
a crunch clash against league leaders Dagenham
and Redbridge to come in late October.
Further down the pyramid and into the
NCEL Premier Division, two of our featured
clubs go head-to-head as Hemsworth
Miners Welfare host Penistone Church on
Saturday 9 October. It has the makings of
a fine encounter, with both sides needing a
win to steer themselves clear of danger at
the foot of the table.
A week later, as we return to action at
Reading, Athersley Rec welcome Silsden
AFC to Sheerien Park. No doubt Pete
and Alan would appreciate some bodies
through the turnstiles to help cheer the
Penguins on as they aim to pick up some
crucial points.
Unfortunately, there are no home fixtures
for Frickley Athletic during this period, but
if anyone fancies a jaunt to the seaside,
the Blues travel to Bridlington Town on
Tuesday 19 October. We really can’t sell it
enough, can we?
As aforementioned, we host the Blades
a day later than originally scheduled
and there are a couple of local teams in
action at home on Saturday 23 October.
Athersley Rec host Knaresborough Town,
while Guiseley AFC entertain Chorley.
Please see below a selection of fixtures. All games
kick-off at 3pm unless otherwise stated.
Tuesday 5 October
FC Halifax Town v Notts County (7:45pm)
Worsbrough Bridge v Nostell Miners Welfare (7:45pm)
Saturday 9 October
GROVE STREET | BARNSLEY FC OFFICIAL PROGRAMME
know we’re all disappointed about the
result on Wednesday night – it was a
big game against Nottingham Forest
and one that we were all desperate to
win. Unfortunately, it wasn’t meant to be.
Although the table doesn’t make for particularly
good reading at the moment, it’s still early days
and there are a lot of points still to be won this
season, so it’s important that we don’t write the
Reds off just yet.
If we have learnt anything about this team over
the past few years, it’s that they have a neversay-die
attitude and we have been in much
worse positions than this in the past.
You only have to look back a couple of seasons
when it seemed as though we were dead and
buried before going into lockdown, but we came
back in the face of adversity and were fantastic
for those last nine games.
And when all looked lost, the Reds found a way
to win – digging out results in the last seconds
against Nottingham Forest and Brentford in the
final two games of the season.
56
That’s what you call character.
And the majority of the squad from that survival
campaign are still at Oakwell now. They have
the experience of going through that together
and know what it’s all about, so you can’t tell me
that they can’t turn their form around and start
picking up points.
This game against Millwall will be another tough
one – they’re always difficult to play against, but
if we get behind the lads from the first whistle,
there’s no reason why we can’t get the win this
afternoon.
The supporters can make a huge difference
today, so let’s show them that battling Barnsley
spirit and help get the lads over the line!
Enjoy the game!
