Religious Practices Message

Melissa Immel & Mark Wolkow

Greetings from the RPC

This past year has been rewarding, productive, joyful, challenging, and at

times, sorrowful. As we enter the new year, we can reflect on how our

congregation has bonded and grown stronger. We are proud and

humbled to have had the opportunity to serve on the Religious Practices

Committee during this time. One of the many lessons learned from Covid

is that we must be flexible, adjust our expectations, and go with the

flow. Everyone hoped and prayed that the worst would be over for the

High Holy Days, but unfortunately, we faced surging infections. Once

again, we needed to shift gears to have Plan A, B, and C in place should

the conditions require it. As we embark on 5782, we will be focusing on

creating opportunities for spiritual connection with you and your family,

both in-person and on ZOOM.

We have a steady line up of services starting on October 1 st and 2 nd , as we

celebrate with David and Natasha Pollock as their son Stanley becomes a

Bar Mitzvah. For the remaining Friday nights, we have Shabbat evening

services at 7:00 PM all month, with a special Breast Cancer Awareness

Shabbat on October 15 th . Finally, join Rabbi Franken as he leads a

Taking Hold of Torah on Sunday, October 23 rd at 10:30 am.

Remember to bookmark the Temple calendar page, found at

https://www.calendarwiz.com/templeadasshalom. Our calendar is updated

regularly with changes as they happen and kept current for all events,

dates, times, and ZOOM links.

B'Shalom,

Mark & Melissa

Kehillah MAGNET Message

Joel Yoffee

Hello Temple Adas Shalom Community,

We hope everyone is continuing to stay safe and has had a wonderful summer!

REMINDER!

Please see the following REVISED health guidelines for our Kehillah MAGNET

Religious School:

1. Parents, teachers, and students must wear masks while in the building.

2. Desks in all classrooms will be socially distanced.

3. Staff will disinfect classrooms at the end of each school day.

We want to ensure all parents that we will make every effort to ensure their

child’s safety!

NEW MIDWEEK SCHEDULE

Midweek will be virtual-only and now occur on Wednesdays from 6:30 p.m. to

7:30 p.m. and be for Hebrew learning only! Just 1 hour!

NEW HEBREW FAMILY SERVICE

During the first Friday of every month (October through May), our very own Mike

Mullis will lead services geared for families. The Hebrew family service is a

great way to provide a further understanding of Hebrew learning! It is highly

encouraged for all to attend.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Every Sunday that class is in session, Kehillah MAGNET will be offering bagels

and donuts to all students, staff and families, as well as prospective families

that would like to check-out the Kehillah MAGNET Religious School. Please

tell all your friends who are interested in joining our school to contact Sarah

O’Donnell at the email below.

Kehillah MAGNET still has student availability at all grade levels! If you have a

child or know of a family with children interested in learning more about their

Jewish heritage, Kehillah MAGNET might be the learning environment for

them. We would love the opportunity to discuss our Jewish educational

programs with all those interested. Don’t hesitate to reach out to our new

Principal, Sarah O’Donnell, at principal@templeadasshalom.org for additional

information.

Many Thanks,

Joel Yoffee, Kehillah MAGNET Religious School Committee Chair

Sarah O’Donnell, Kehillah MAGNET Religious School Principal

Security Update

Security Committee

In 2018 our Security Team was born and since has grown.

We started by writing a grant for funds from FEMA for Non-Profits,

with a disappointing decline. We developed a stronger team and sought

advice on grant writing. A “Hate Biased Crimes,” State of Maryland grant

for non-profit schools became available. We applied for and were

awarded funding for the Early Learning Center in 2019, which benefitted

the entire synagogue in some way. This past winter of 2021, the team

made a valiant effort to rewrite our application for the FEMA grant. We

are pleased to announce that it was awarded to us for security needs

which we will begin to roll out soon! This grant will sure-up significant

physical measures for our building and support initiatives for human

safety.

These changes mean that it is essential that our entire TAS Community

commit to becoming aware of our security tools and enhancements and

practice procedures necessary to use them to save lives and be safe while

on our Temple property. The newly named “Safety & Security Team” will

provide training opportunities in the coming months so that you will be

prepared for emergencies. Please plan to attend and make all of our

efforts worthwhile and give all our families peace of mind.

Training will be noted in publications and our calendar in the months

ahead as covid calms, and building occupancy grows.

If you are interested and have strengths in this area of safety and security,

contact Pat Wolkow (patwolkow@gmail.com) or Fred

Edeson (bandg@templeadasshalom.org) to be considered for the team.

Fundraising Announcement

Terry Weiner

IT FINALLY HERE!

There is a new fundraiser and this one will please everyone! All of us buy gift cards at

one time or another - it’s probably one of the most common gifts to give and one of the

best to receive. Temple Adas Shalom has partnered with ShopWithScrip.com to shop

for a number of gift cards. There are over 700 vendors on here and quite a few of them

come in different formats - the traditional hard card or the ecard. And some of them

even come as reloadable cards.

So this is how it works. There are two ways to access the program - either go through

the ShopWithScrip.com website or download the App RaiseRight. At the present

time, we are only utilizing the App. You can go onto the website to all the vendors that

are participating in this program; however, some might not be on the RaiseRight App at

this time. Either way, you will need our special code which is C8WI7XN6IQBW. Once

you go through the sign up, you are good to go! You will need to add your bank

information as you will be charged at the time of order. Without that information, the

order will not process. See below:

There is a shipping and handling fee on every order you ship to home. It will vary

depending on the number of gift cards you order and the shipping method you select.

For gift cards shipped using USPS, the fee is $.50 postage per order, and $.50 per card

for a total of $1.00 - $8.50 per order. For UPS, the fee is $11.00 or $16.00 based on the

method selected, plus $.50 handling fee per card for a total of $11.50 - $24 per order.

You’ll see the total amount at checkout. You can do up to 16 gift cards per order. If you

want more than that, you will need to do another order.

E-cards come directly to your mailbox (email that is).

At this time, this program is only open to the congregation. Once we see how this

goes, you will be able to share with others. However, and this is very important:

You cannot send any promotional emails with regards to this program

The family who is ordering must be a paid up member of Temple Adas Shalom

All orders are final so make sure you review your order before purchasing - there

are no exceptions to this!

But the best part is this - you will see a rebate percentage next to each vendor. This is a

fundraising program but you will get 50% of that rebate credited back to your account.

This is a win-win scenario.

Should you have any questions, please send me a direct email to

fundraising@templeadasshalom.org. Do not send your questions/phone calls to the office.

And allow a little time for me to respond as I do not check email constantly.

Have fun shopping!

Terry Weiner, Fundraising Chairperson
